Vierapril, Day 10 - Breath

Taking that first gulp of air after leaving Ul'dah, and walking down the Eighty Sins of Sasamo, is a memory that's stayed fresh in my mind.

The air in Thanalan stings. It burns in your throat and clings to your lungs. If you had an alchemist's eye, I'm sure you could find bits of dust, metal, sand, and ceruleum, all swirling about like a cloud of miniature daggers. They make a perfect blend of heat and pain to keep you on your feet and moving until you find shelter.

Descending the stairs leading away from the city takes time, and the land is all too eager to reward you for your efforts. It forces you to consider what those Eighty Sins were, and the pain Sasamo must have felt going up and down the stairs, eighty times a day for eighty days. Could I have done the same? Would I die after the eightieth day, as she did?

Unlike Sasamo, I have no intentions of upsetting the sultanate. But, breathing in hot desert air and sweating under clothes meant for colder climes, I confess that I'm taken to a time before the Calamity, where I have been tried and convicted for coveting the throne my sibling inhabits.

The city knows me as Princess Sasamo, but that title was stripped from me.

This is my twentieth descent today.

I take desperate gulps of air as my feet are forced to touch burning hot stone, over and over.

Ul'dah headcanons

Ul'dah has a immense amount of wealth (and a lot of income disparity, yes I know) and is a massive city but I just never personally felt that reflected in game. Anyway, here are some small headcanons and little lore bits I play around with to help with some needed worldbuilding. Please feel free to yoink these, build on them etc, don't need to credit just have fun. (All images used can be found on this Pinterest board I keep updated here and there.)

Coffee is the main drink of choice in Ul'dah. It is one of their biggest exports. You can find both small and large coffeehouses throughout the massive city. (Depicitions above of Ottaman coffeehouses.) Coffee is served as is shown above. ( Called a Cezve or Ibrik, both words mean the same thing) Here is a video of one of the methods used to make coffee

I like birds, so did you know the Ottoman empire made these lovely stone homes for the birds? Now you do. Ul'dah also a lot of them. How nice.

Baklava, Lamb, Turkish delight (or Lokum) are just a taste of the cuisine Ul'dah offers!

Ul'dah has public bathhouses, some Turkish bathhouses above to fuel some ideas!

Some snapshots of around Ul'dah. If you want an idea of where to research more ideas for yourself as well, Ul'dah already takes influence from Turkey and the Ottoman empire. Those are great places to start.

(I may update this as I go but this is just the general ideas I keep in mind when I write Ul'dah.)

FebHyurary 2024: Day 2 - Faith

Every year, House Voss would make pilgrimage to the monuments erected in honor of Ul'dah's patron god. Those of the family and the staff who serve under them make the journey to Eastern and Southern Thanalan to pay homage to the Traders. A journey meant for self-reflection and humility, hence the simple attire that even the most honored among the noble house must don.
