Adult Swim Games titles to be delisted by May
Tumblr media
As the week has gone on we’ve seen even more developers come out and confirm that they too were contacted by Warner Bros. Discovery — the parent company behind Adult Swim Games — and informed that their titles would be delisted “within 60 days”. The latest developer to break the news is Team2Bit, makers of Fist Puncher which has been on Steam since 2013.
Tumblr media
I encourage you to read the full post by dev Matt Kain, but these excerpts from the post that breaks the news says a lot by themselves:
We've asked that Warner Bros. simply transfer the game to our Steam publisher account so that it can stay active, but so far they have said no with the reason being that they made the universal decision not to transfer the games back to the original studios and do not have the resources to do so. No, the transfer process is not complicated. It likely takes about 2 minutes on their end: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/gettingstarted/managing_apps/transfer
And, I feel this needs to be said somewhere… but… Videogames are art. Videogames connect us. Videogames are important. Videogames are part of our cultural heritage and should be preserved.
Kain says the team will keep on pressing Warner Brothers for the game to be transferred to them.
The initial news of game retirement was broken by the developer for puzzle game Small Radios Big Televisions, Owen Deery. Deery has made the game available to download for free from the Fire Face website (his solodev company).
Tumblr media
Games confirmed to be retiring:
Fist Puncher (Confirmed - available on Steam)
Small Radios Big Televisions (Confirmed - available on Steam / PS4 / Fire Face website for free)
Soundodger+ (Confirmed - available on Steam / the itch.io release is unaffected)
Other games not yet confirmed and the platforms they are available on are listed here and here, and screenshots of the list can be found under the readmore.)
You can see all games published by Adult Swim Games on Steam listed here.
This post is actively being updated, please be patient.

in honor of the 25 years of VG challenge, i’m going to release every thought i’ve ever had about brian/curt — starting with the contrast that makes me the most crazy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO. these two scenes are a perfect encapsulation of the brian/curt dynamic.
- in the flashy, gaudy stage setting, brian makes a show of “claiming” curt (will discuss how the blue lighting contributes to this next week!); and, in the way that all Drama™️ is just imitated action, brian is engaging curt in the imitated, purely performed art of the guitar fellatio. other than this kiss, this is the most physically intimate we ever see brian and curt actively and consciously being. fascinating, that BRIAN WILL ONLY DESIRE CURT IN THIS PUBLIC, FLASHY, GAUDY SPOTLIGHT! he “loves” him for the image of Curt Wild!
-by contrast, after the orgy scene, we get this bird’s eye view of brian and curt in bed, the morning after. the framing here (whether intentional or not) is so. fucking beautiful. the lighting is much different. even though it’s technically more lit, all of the flashiness of the stage washes away and becomes this portrait of pure, natural life and emotion. instead of their costumes, they are clad in nothing but each other. more to the point, curt and brian are in the same spots as the prior frame, but who is reaching for who? brian clings to the edge/corner of this bed, BUT CURT TAKES MOST OF THE SPACE AND REACHES FOR BRIAN WITH BOTH HIS HANDS AND HIS BODY. he seeks, always, this kind of vulnerability of brian that brian is literally closed of to!
they want such different things from each other, but in such a similar way. it’s so heartbreaking.

VG: Speed Run
It was early in the morning. A certain rhino paced as he thought up his speech. He took a deep breath as he contemplated returning to the Pridelands. He was onto the next part of his plan... "Hey." The rhino in question sighed in annoyance before turning to the voice. He saw that it had been Mrembo, the monotone, hairy lion. "Any idea when our next mission will be? Dying to get something to eat." "No missions today!" the rhino then grimaced, "And you know how uncomfortable it makes me when you talk about the types of things you eat! Now, please! I've got a very important speech to make to a few friends." "Oooh! Can we come?!" Jeuri suddenly piped. "NO! Absolutely not!" the rhino roared, "I-I mean... why don't you try Flat Ridge Rock, I thought I spotted some nice big lizards there..." "Lizards? Again?" Mrembo sighed in annoyance, "Better than nothing, I guess." Jeuri rushed to the cave he and his made a home in. "Hey, Kiume, no missions today!" "Good," the older lion glared from the shadows, "I don't want anybody to see me like this..."
____ Later that morning... The cacophony of several impatient, angered, and hyped calls made by various ungulates and birds rang across Mizimu Grove. There, they awaited the return of a certain pachyderm they placed all of their trust in, especially as of late. The crowed turned to the sound of stomping. It had been their glorious leader, Ngurumo, surrounded by an intimidating, austere crash of elite rhinos guarding him. The crowd cheered in delight. The cheering, however, gradually ceased as Ngurumo gracefully held up a hoof, preparing his rallying speech. "My fellow prey... It seems every day I hear more and more about the violent nature of our oppressive leaders after my undeserved banishment! I understand that some of you, my dear, faithful bretheren, have been caught in some of these fights these barbaric creatures keep starting amongst themselves?" "YEAH!" a few notable supporters shouted. "Ngurumo? Sir? How are you receiving this news?" asked an inquisitive Oryx doe. "I'm glad you asked." the rhino smiled. "While I stood in the outskirts of the Pridelands, where I had been mercilessly ejected to by the very perpetrators of these attacks, I was only able to hear of the goings-on of the Pridelands from my trusted, loyal tickbird, Uongo!" The bird in question smirked cunningly as he flew into the scene, as if on cue. "Now Uongo, what was it you heard these lions say about us poor herbivores?" The tickbird, who possessed a drongo-like ability to mimic voices to an uncanny level, formed shapes with his mouth to recreate voices of a few lions: "Kupatana?! -- nobody cares about that holiday!" the bird cherrypicked in Vitani's voice. "We could've had them now, then it'd be over with!" he said in Shabaha's voice, completely out of context. "Just beat 'em black and blue like the usual deal." he then said in Vitani's voice once more, and once again devoid of the true context. The ruminants gasped, as did Ngurumo. "Such violence!" he said, "The King orders bloodthirsty huntresses -- not even from here -- to form his new Guard. Not only was it such a foolish thing to get rid of his old Guard -- one that had a hippo, by the way --, but he allowed his own enemies to keep us in check, and now they want to eat us all! Siding with anything so long as they're predators, and specifically lions at that!" The crowd of herd animals yelled in disgust. "I don't know about you, but I wouldn't hire my own killers. What an idiot, that Simba is!" he cleared his throat, "But anywho, I hear a few brave animals, here, fought back at the Lion Guard, is that right?" Karani screamed loud for Ngurumo to hear, and the vicious hippo that hogged the watering hole -- who was currently concussed -- bellowed proudly. "Yes, heh." Ngurumo's chuckling face became a sympathetic frown, "I, too, am saddened by the senseless attacks made on some of you by these monsters for leaders. Especially around Kupatana! A day of supposed unity! These lions have morphed the very meaning of Kupatana. To them, it's their one day of the year where they gaslight us back into trusting them, in 'the spirit of the holiday'! Bah! I say we take inspiration from the bird and hippo, and fight back! I say we take back the true meaning of Kupatana -- what it meant to all of us since before these predators came about! The real origin of the holiday..." The animals listened intently. They supposed they didn't know the old meaning of the day due to being younger generations raised under the rule of carnivores. They trusted in Ngurumo, who seemed to have knowledge of the past. "In the Spirit of Kupatana, I shall hereby declare all the herds as one! Together, with my lead, we shall overthrow this so-called 'King of the Jungle.' For your loyalty, I promise tickbirds for everyone!" The united herd screamed joyously as the tickbirds made their way to them. A few members of the crowd -- especially Kutoba, the scrappy, short-tempered Oryx -- enthusiastically rooted for the war that would rage on the coming holiday. As the tickbirds became aqcuainted with their new partners, Ngurumo chuckled to himself, speaking in a low voice that most couldn't hear: "Such easy animals to please. Anything works on them -- OW!! Not so hard, Uongo..." The yellow-billed oxpecker glared slightly as he continued burrowing his beak into the rhino's hide. ____ Afternoon... "Oh, man... it's too quiet!" Shabaha lamented, "Where's the excitement? I'm LOSING it!" "Why are you wishing for something bad to happen?" Tazama squinted. Vitani ignored her Guard as she looked and listened still. Today's patrol, so far, had been rather uneventful. No herbivores screeching derogatory remarks, no rogues hunting and marking things that didn't belong to them, all was quiet for now. Peaceful as it was, for once, the Guard was still on-edge anyhow. Though it was only natural for the former members of Zira's pride to never trust a day going too well, silence was strange at a time like this. Vitani had identified this phantom sensation as something called an 'anxiety attack', courtesy of Kiara's education on healthy ways to deal with trauma. She, and all the members of the Lion Guard suffered these, especially after this recent series of intense, violent events. She'd pondered if maybe her anxiety was unwarranted today. Still feeling like she couldn't be too sure, she proposed an idea: "Kasi, why don't you make your usual rounds and scan the area? I'm still too achey to go too far." "You wanna bet I can cover more land within the same time as last time?" "I guess we have a little time for fun." Vitani smirked, "You got until sunset." "I'll be back before the sun touches the top of Mekundu Cliffs!" Kasi was off, "Time me!" The Guard smiled warmly and confidently as they watched the Fastest dash. After moments of silence and staring, Shabaha plopped down in the grass. "Soo... now what?" ____ Though Kasi was on a timed mission, she quickly took in her surroundings as she brushed by them. She had many parts of the Pridelands memorized, showing the remarkable amount of work and traveling the Lion Guard has done for about a year, now. Feeling adventurous, and ambitious, she let her paws take her to parts unknown. Before she knew it, she'd been far on a border if the Pridelands she hadn't seen before. Feeling the grass vanish and be replaced by dry, cracked land was a sign she'd essentially left the kingdom. She was exhilarated as she felt downhill gravity make her sprinting go even faster. A huge cloud of dust gathered beneath her paws, making her feel powerful. Bordering this dry wasteland was a forest that Kasi didn't know what territory it belonged to, be it the last bit of the Pridelands, or the beginning of the Backlands. Something caught her attention, she almost could've sworn a pair of eyes and a pointed face poked from the bushes of the forest. She came to a screeching halt. "Good, I was beginning to think you were never gonna slow down." "Kelele..." "In the flesh." grinned the wolf, "Pleasure seeing you again --" Kasi turned the other way. Growling, Kelele quickly stopped her. "Don't run." the wolf relaxed her pose, "I'm not your enemy..." Kasi backed away slowly. She saw that Kelele's tail had been singed slightly from Vitani's first ever use of the Fire Roar. "You have to believe me..." Kelele urged. "I dunno, I mean you literally kidnapped a puppy because you thought he had powers..." "And it's because of that, I cannot return to the Pridelands. I've got something I've been wanting to tell the Roar-wielder for a long time." "Alright. You can tell me, and I'll see if I want to deliver it to her." "Fair enough..." the wolf grinned again as she bowed her head, "While I have come to challenge the Roar, I don't plan to exterminate it. That's not what this is about. I wish to learn more about it, and bring that information back North, where I come from. There aren't very many of us left. I want to make my small pack proud by making history that will live on in paintings and legend." Kasi listened intently. She still had her doubts, given the fact that Kelele's story sounded a tad self-centered, and it didn't at all explain why she threatened Sauti's life over it. But, then... what would the real story be if she turned out to be lying about it all? The slender lioness continued to hear Kelele out, allowing her mind to open more. If it was all a lie, she could just warn Vitani. If it wasn't, maybe it was life-saving information for all parties. ____ Over a course of hours, Kasi settled beside Kelele. Their initial rocky start blossomed into similar things they bonded over, such as a shared competitiveness and snarky, dry humor. Though, speaking of competitiveness... The Fastest's eyes suddenly caught the change in color of the sky, she glanced back to see an orange sun about to set. It looked like it was much further below the top of Mekundu Cliffs, she feared. Maybe there was still just a bit of time left. "Oh, no... I really gotta go..." "That's too bad." Kelele perked up, "Hey!" "Yeah?" "If you don't tell Vitani the things I wanted to share with her, I understand." Kasi nodded. She was unsure if Kelele's self-awareness was out of modesty, or possibly manipulation. "Fastest way back is through the woods. Less steep this way. Safe travels." The slender lioness took the wolf's word for it, eventually finding her word to be true. She wondered, if Kelele was being genuine about the way back, were her intentions genuine, too? ____ Kasi watched as the sky fell into twilight. She cringed. She knew it was long past the time she'd promised everyone. Her sprint turned into a gradually-slowing scamper as she panted heavily. She saw the Guard all bonding. Shabaha was telling outrageous hypotheticals, resulting in some of the liveliest banter they've had in years. The leader of the Guard stood up as she saw Kasi on her way. "You're way late, Kasi!" Vitani balked, "Very uncharacteristic of you. What kept you, you make new friends along the way?" Kasi's panting slowed. A piercing question that happened to be. "Maybe..." She was still unsure of her judgment in Kelele. But she could save it for now, either way... ____ ((Author's Note: This is one of those episodes where I just started drawing and THEN worked a story around it. Kasi's a hard character to really figure out so I blanked out pretty bad on her story for a good while. After all these years of trying to figure her out, I finally reached a rather meta final idea: She's supposed to be an enigma. She's blunt and comes off mysterious, but is passionate and experimental, trying all sort of crafts and adventures. Her adventurous, risk-taking side is explored here as she daringly explores niche parts of the Pridelands. I also really projected my struggle of constantly not being on time, especially times I promise/estimate to people. Fun Fact: I actually worked Kelele into this story because I'd originally planned an episode where she would find Vitani alone and try to learn more about her, but then I started getting that idea to explore the other Guard members, so I revived most of the concept and made Kasi the one who ends up stuck with Kelele. Another Fun Fact: Ngurumo's campaign scene (which would totally be a musical number) was originally set to take place in the original concept of Moral Eyes, which was originally gonna fully revolve around Kupatana since Tazama and Jeuri's bond symbolized unity and peace. Kupatana will be even more significant later Yet another Fun Fact: It's believed that tickbirds and herd animals actually do not have a mutual relationship in which the birds feed on parasites off the backs of the mammals, but rather that the tickbird is a parasite, itself, as it feeds on more than just ticks; it apparently deliberately cuts the skin of the mammals they're eating off of in order to suck their blood. We'll see how well that relationship between Ngurumo and Uongo/the herbivores and other tickbirds goes lol Lastly, to make things relevant to Pride Month despite it not being too obvious in the story, my headcanon for Kasi is that she's Panromantic/Asexual. She may or may not find a love, but that doesn't take away her attraction to others. People with romantic attraction but no actual romance going on: Y'all valid [insert "Well, of course I know him, he's me" meme here]))

The Human Cockroach Plan
(an expanded version of an extract that I posted on Reddit)
Context for the title: a jeweled wasp taking over a cockroach and turning it into an unresisting host for its young. Warning: grisly.
https://youtu.be/ovo_T0KqdYg
To dismantle the Hero Association, the Neo Heroes are doing two things.
Attracting heroes.   Pro-heroes have a long list of legitimate complaints about the Hero  Association, and with the way the Monster Association raid went down, everyone's feeling a little down and asking themselves some hard questions. The speed with which the Neo Heroes have moved speaks to an outfit was waiting for that perfect moment.
The frustrated employee is one of the best tools for a challenger looking to steal an incumbent’s thunder.  To that end, the Neo-Heroes have head-hunted McCoy. It’s no co-incidence he’s the second chief of operations at the Hero Association. It makes him someone who can see what needed doing, but who never has quite enough authority to see operational changes through.
Tumblr media
He knows what appeals to heroes: decent pay, not having to worry about daily essentials, good equipment, being able to do their work without excessive risk, readily-available back up, ongoing training. It’s a wonderful package. It’s a package the Hero Association would do very well indeed to offer. And it's worked like new money to attract a lot of pro-heroes.
Tumblr media
everything they’re discussing makes sense -- it’s a shame it’s under false pretenses
Seeding a false narrative. The Organization may not like monsters, but they know how to control them. They sent out five dragon-level threats to various cities, all beautifully controlled so that Blue managed to 'defeat' his without coming to harm and  saved a lot of the city he was protecting and looks like the up and coming messiah. While the pro-heroes couldn't save the cities they sought to protect. The Organization doesn't give a damn that they killed thousands of people, displaced hundreds of thousands and destroyed billions of dollars of property to tell that story. Individual human lives mean nothing to them.  Outside of that splendid victory by Blue, the record for the rest of the Neo Heroes was not quite so stellar.
Tumblr media
A new messiah raised on a literal hill of dead bodies
It's not enough to scatter the Hero Association and co-opt many of its heroes into working for them. They still need an army, which they're busy But stop and think: WOULDN'T IT BE EASIER TO USE ROBOTS? After all, we've seen their Machine Gods.
There are two advantages that people have over robots. First, no matter how clever an AI, when it's faced with inputs that weren't anticipated, it produces results that are logically consistent, but not useful. That's how King managed to fool Machine God G4 into letting him use the bathroom. We got a milder example with the VGS, which gave odd, but logical answers for some of the heroes who used it, answers based on the assumptions with which it was programmed. Second, there's the 'fun factor' that Atomic Samurai talked about. People have talents and gain mastery that eclipses any mimickry or adaptation.
Tumblr media
Even the cleverest AI  has its limitations
So to kill two birds with one stone, they're taking strong, talented people and gutting them like a wasp does a cockroach to produce powerful, flexible, talented warriors who are nevertheless as compliant and expendable as robots. Notice that they have no interest in cyborgizing the amateurs -- at least not until they get trained appropriately. Thank you, coach Darkshine!    Zaedats and Infelsinave have been converted. They’re living cockroaches, conscious and lucid but having no choice but to hand over all their resources until they’re empty.
Tumblr media
All the good things they're providing serve their purpose of raising the Neo Heroes into products. Having housing provided means that Neo-Heroes’ environment is controlled. Especially the choice of a tower rather than an open city means that there’s little reason to mix with the outside world.  It’s not insignificant that heroes are overwhelmingly young men. What is a key point of young men?  They tend to hate cooking and aren’t afraid of taking supplements to get ‘gains’.  Free food? Sold. No need to lie about putting stuff in their drink -- guys who want to bulk up will grab it.  Free standardised equipment provided is perfect for grabbing highly-detailed data. And working in pre-selected teams means that there’s always eyes on you. All packaged up so slickly it hasn’t occurred to the vast majority of its heroes that they’re turkeys at a turkey farm and Thanksgiving is just round the corner.
They're also cynically hunting down criminals with the talent to stay out of the Hero Association's grasp. Why? It's as one of the prisoners explains to Puri Puri -- society has little sympathy for them, even after they've done their time. Few people have the moral decency to protest if they're treated inhumanely.  After all, deluding ourselves into thinking that it can't possibly happen to us is a very human failing.
Tumblr media
how generous we are with other peoples’ lives!
I have to admire how brazen the Neo Hero’s paymasters are.  The Organization is building that army they need, right under people's noses.   Mostly out of the people who are supposed to be opposing them. And in doing that, they're perverting the idea of hero into that of a hypocrite, which works perfectly for them. No one is moved by a hypocrite's words.
Tumblr media
You can call them a lot of things, but you can’t claim they’re hypocrites.  They’ve being upfront about what they’re doing. If you choose to read benign intent into their actions, it’s your funeral.  Literally.

The leaves are turning, the nights are cool, the birds are either beginning the business of preparing for winter, or getting going on their long journeys for warmer climes. It's fall. More than fall, though--tomorrow is the first day of October. Artists all around the world are getting their inks out in anticipation for... Inktober 2018.
Two years ago today, I started a silly little project about birds who cast spells via singing. Today, we'll return to those sleepy blue mountains, green valleys, and slow-moving rivers, as Inktober begins, and my pen sings the Ballads of Remex once more.
I wanted to do something a little special to celebrate BoR's second birthday--and to thank everyone who's been supporting me those last two years.
So, this year, if you are (or become) a $5+ Patron for the month of October...
I will mail you a set of limited edition Ballads of Remex stickers, featuring your favorite BoR characters!!!
To go on your laptop, water bottle, cat, face, whatever you want. Later this month I'll hold a poll to see which characters you want to see sticker'd, and the best inks from this year will be candidates as well.
I will be printing a limited run of these stickers. Once October ends, they're gone. If you're not a $5+ Patron yet, consider becoming one today (link below) to get a set!
https://www.patreon.com/virginiagreene
If you're already a Patron--thank you. I would not have been able to make it this year without your support. <3 So, ALL Patrons will see each of this year's Inktobers a day before the rest of the internet. :)
You can also view the stories (and past stories--archives being updated intermittently) at...
www.balladsofremex.com
Thanks, all--I hope you enjoy this season of The Ballads of Remex!
<3,

Surreal Symphony. Cotton candy clouds. A sky blue bird. Daytime dreaming. Let your imagination loose with Magritte’s The Promise tote bag. © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn.
René Magritte was one of the most important surrealist artists. With his paintings he provoked and challenged the observer's perception of reality. He is an inspiration for us at LOQI. Like Magritte we dream big and laugh loud. We like humor, surprises and blue skies. Surreal realities. Far-fetched fantasies. Extraordinarily unordinary. Belgian-born artist René Magritte is one of the important surrealist artists of all time—always challenging and questioning our perception of reality in wacky and witty ways.

My VG Music Picks #54 - Blue Bird Lamentation (Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward)
This week's VG Music Pack is a sombre piece from Virtue's Last Reward.
Do any of you have a piece of music that when you listen to it, you end up feeling sad regardless of your current mood? For me, Blue Bird Lamentation from the second Zero Escape title is that piece. Seriously, I get melancholy whenever I hear it. Hell, sometimes I put it on just to make myself sad. (more…)

Woodcuts in suburbia: on nostalgia, melancholy, and resistance
Tumblr media
Selbstbildness von vorn, Käthe Kollwitz, 1922-1923. © 2019 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn
I associate woodcuts with a particular aesthetic: they loom from their perch on the bookshelf in the den, next to a collection of Hans Christian Andersen tales, whose worn buckram binding is effusing that sapid antique book aroma which pairs so well with coffee and cake. In the corner of the room, above a worn black leather chair designated for tv-watching and reading, a pathos dangles from its pot, fed by gentle streams of light emanating from the canopy of shade sheltering the backyard garden. On weekends and special occasions, the clinking of cake forks against china is punctuated only by an occasional “delicious!” — direct and accurate. This orchestration produces a distinctly Germanic affect, and one that I associate with the elderly; the particular family room I’m recalling belonged to my next-door neighbors growing up, former members of the Danish anti-Nazi resistance who had emigrated in the early 1960s. While I can’t be sure there was any deeper meaning behind their affinity for the humble woodcut, I do recall the medium’s prominence in their home. For me, something as benign as a flock of birds is represented with a degree of melancholy in these prints’ impenetrable black shadows — an inevitability in this generation’s Weltanschauung, that everything beautiful carries with it a degree of pain, a nostalgia for the idea of a more civil world.

Without Title, Constantin von Mitschke-Collande, 1923 (?) © Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
These beloved octogenarians, Ketty and Eigil, were my first true role models, and I insisted on seeing them almost every day for the first decade of my life. They taught me what hygge was before it became a commodity, when it was an applied wisdom that emanated, more than anything, from common sense. I can still place myself their 1950′s minimal traditional home: running my hands along their walnut furniture as I toddled from room to room, greeted around each corner by the unique tick-tock of an antique clock, my slippers shuffling along the dull, greenish-blue carpet so typical of that era. Nothing in that home was remotely as paired down as today’s CB2 nonsense, and the old neighborhood still retained a smidgen of character unlike the suburbs to which my family would later relocate; lovingly tended beds of roses, pansies, and bleeding hearts grew around coy ponds under the shade of ancient maple and red oak.
Though they wouldn't have wanted it this way, I found the art in Ketty and Eigil's home to be inextricably linked to their brazen defiance in the face of Nazi terror. They seldom discussed their acts of resistance, almost never in front of children, and always with a healthy dose of embarrassment. For them, violence, even against evil, was never a source of pride. It was the democratic ideals to which they so stubbornly clung that were the real source of their identity: notions like neighborliness and helpfulness, belief in the healthcare and education systems. It wasn’t until years after their deaths that I detected any degree of paradox in their suburban American existence meshed with Scandinavian socialist ideals, was able to chuckle at their nostalgia for the old country as expressed in their grocery cart (tubs of frozen Coolwhip to be served generously with home-baked apple cake, slices of summer sausage or cucumber salad served on squares of cocktail rye, a far cry from the bakeries and delicatessens of northern Europe.)

My association of woodcuts with Germanic Europe was solidified during my time as a High School exchange student in the rural Rheinland, and again during a semester abroad in Berlin. It seemed to me that, if one was of a certain generation and political bent, there was a good chance one might own such a print. But while I may associate woodcuts with the interior design choices of a singular socioeconomic stratum from the middle of the last century, its origins predate my concept of history. Woodcutting is thought to be the earliest print technique, originating in 9th-century China, and arriving in Europe sometime in the 14th century. Woodcut has been a staple medium for prominent Northern European artists like Dürer since the 16th century. To produce a print, artists carve their image into a block of wood, along the grain, removing the parts that will not carry ink. The surface is then rolled over with a brayer and the image transferred to a sheet of paper through a press. The result in works like Käthe Kollwitz’s Selbstbildness von vorn (1922-1923), pictured above, is nothing short of haunting — well-suited to the violently introspective tone of German Expressionism. Here’s a short demonstration:

Chapter 2, Section 1–This Thing Called Human; Scene 2
Wiegenlied of Green (VG), pages 37-42
🍀 Michaela ~In the country of Elphegort, "Lake of Amusement" ~
 .
A large lake stretched out beneath my gaze.
There was a moderate breeze, and a sky without a single cloud.
This was the ideal weather for flying as a robin.
There was a big lake to the north from Held's forest. It seemed the humans called it, "The Lake of Amusement". An older person who came to the "Millenium Tree" for a pilgrimage the other day spoke proudly to a youth they had brought along with them about the legend of the lake. According to them, this lake was a place where the spirits that served the great land god Held would come to play on nights of the full moon. And on those occasions, the spirits would bring forth gems called "blue spirit stones". It's said that if you took those gems home and buried them in the earth, then that region would have an extremely bountiful harvest.
I had felt such nostalgia upon hearing that story, but sadly it was only half true. In reality, us spirits had often come to this lake to play long ago. In that era there was still a reasonable high amount of humans who had that special ability to see spirits. Among those people there were a considerable number of groups who, believing in the legend, would capture spirits in the hope of obtaining "blue spirit stones".
Up until that point, it was true. But the idea of spirits bringing forth these "blue spirit stones" was complete and utter codswallop.
Normally, spirits couldn't taste anything of the natural world, but when we were transformed into animals that was another matter. We never got hungry, but there were times we enjoyed taste as an indulgence. Among other things, one item that suited us was trauben fruit.
Trauben was a bluish-purple fruit that was cultivated along the coast of the lake, which grew in bunches. Apparently humans used some sort of method to make an alcoholic drink out of it. When the spirits came to the lake to play long ago, those that coveted them would try to take the fruit back home with them. The story of "blue spirit stones" must have been brought about by a human seeing that and mistaking the fruit for a gemstone in the moonlight.
More unfortunate than anything was that thanks to those anecdotes Lord Held had forbidden anyone from going to the lake after that, to keep anything from happening to any more spirits.
Trauben wasn't a fruit from Lord Held's forest. So there were a lot of younger spirits who had never tasted of it, and it was extremely frustrating that no matter how much I talked to them about it I couldn't adequately convey its appeal.
Seeing is believing, as the saying goes. I had come to the lake like this now in the hope of obtaining some trauben fruit.
I would be going against what Lord Held had said, but it was still light out, and if I returned right away there wouldn't be any problem. Elluka had told me that there were hardly any humans around who could recognize us as spirits while we were transformed into an animal. And anyway Lord Held worried too much. The forest was a great place, but even spirits could get bored of it after living a thousand years.
Looking from the sky, I quickly learned where the trauben was growing. The western coast was stained bluish purple. There was a small village north of there, and there resided the humans who made their living making wine (that was supposedly what the alcoholic drink made out of trauben was called).
I felt a sudden nostalgia at coming back to this old place. It hadn't changed one bit from back then.
Once I landed on the branch of a tree near the field, my goal was right before my eyes. Without thinking I gulpingly chirped in my throat at the lush trauben. I felt a little awkward at snatching crops that the humans had grown, but so few of them were ripe, so they probably wouldn't mind me taking a little bit.
First I tried one. Rich sweetness and faint sour filled up the inside of my mouth. Yes, it was delicious! It felt even more so than it did in the past; was that because it had been so long since I'd had it, or was it that the humans' farming skill had made it better? I wondered which it was.
In the form of a small robin, I couldn't carry any large presents. I selected a bunch that looked tastier, with deeper color, and grabbed as many as I could with my feet. That should be enough for everyone to sample some.
If they liked it, we could all go to pick it together next time.
Ah, but if we pick too much it might be bad for the humans.
Before that perhaps was the problem of figuring out how to keep this from Lord Held.
I once more flew up into the sky. I was wavering a little, probably because I'd greedily gotten such large fruits, but it wouldn't be that difficult to fly back to the forest.
Tottering in the air, I realized that something was getting closer to me from behind. When I turned, there was a large black figure.
"Huh?"
It was very clearly aiming for me, following me at an incredibly high speed.
Feeling like I was in danger, I moved to go faster; but I was no match for the speed attained by my pursuer's large wings. Six sharp, thick talons were gradually drawing nearer.
"Please! If you're playing a prank, cut it out! It's me, Michaela!" I cried out in fear, though it fell on deaf ears. The one pursuing me was not a spirit, nor a friend from the forest.
Immediately after, my whole body was attacked with a sudden impact. Struck with pain, I dropped the trauben. When I did, he (? Or was it she?) pulled away from me, chasing after the falling fruit.
Ah, that was it. Their aim had been the trauben. Thank goodness, I thought to myself…And in that moment I felt it. The one who had attacked me…the black Rollam bird, had left a deep gash on my wing with its claws.
My right wing wouldn't move. Blood fluttered in the air.
No, this was bad, I was falling!
Having lost control, my body spiraled and fell down to the ground.

This review unit was sent to me courtesy of the nice people at Ugoos, so thank you very much, and especially Nancy, for the kindness and help!
Ugoos is a young (about 4 years old) company that came out with several products over the last few years and is showing quite a promise. They concentrate on Rockchip based products, but also carry several Amlogic based devices.
AM1 is Ugoos’s Amlogic S905 new entry into the (quite) crowded recent S905 group. It offers decent general performance, and great video performance, coupled with network speed that rivals the leaders in this bunch.
What’s in the Box?
As can be seen both in the unboxing video and the photo below, the package is pretty standard, with the external antenna, DC power adapter, (nifty blue) HDMI 2.0 cable, and standard IR remote control and user manual – on top of the box itself and a USB OTG cable (mostly for firmware manual upgrade or connecting to PC). However, it’s really all you need to use this device efficiently – aside from a digital screen.
The box contains the standard assortment of necessities: The TV Box (naturally), its external antenna, HDMI 2.0 cable, a USB OTG cable, standard IR remote control, DC power adapter, and a user manual.
Looks
The AM1 is made of metal (aluminium) and comes in the color sky blue. That’s a bold choice for a box in the land of black and silver, but I find it a nice variation. It sports an external antenna that services the dual WiFi capabilities it offers, and provide passive ventilation both from it’s bottom and right sides, as well as a heat-sink inside to dissipate the heat from the CPU. Also, an interesting note is that the board inside is the same as the one used for Tronsmart’s Vega S95 Telos model, and so it includes the SATA connector – even though it is not usable and blocked behind the venting grill on the side of the box.

Benchmarks and Testing
All benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:
Antutu Benchmark
The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. Don’t mind the bottom ranking of the AM1 in the updated 6.0.1 graph, since it includes only about half of the devices tested so far, so it gives only a partial picture. As can be seen in the older benchmark, the AM1 takes a middle position that matches its s905 competition.
GPU Mark Benchmark
GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark. The GPU mark benchmark pretty much mirrors the ranking in Antutu, with results in the mid-low part of the graph.
A1 SD Benchmark
A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory – that is why it’s in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). AM1 shows a surprisingly high ranking in this benchmark which may indicate good components as well as good implementation that brings it to the top 3 in the charts!
PC Mark Benchmark
The PC Mark benchmark test suite gives a more task/day oriented picture of performance. Things like photo editing, web browsing and video playback are tested. Even with the highest “web browsing” score, the average “work performance” score still puts it in the middle of the chart, but keeps it in the s905 score group, due to the similar task related performance.
3D Mark Benchmark
3D Mark benchmark is considered as one of the best ways to test 3d performance on Android (and other platforms). As mentioned in prior s905 reviews, the chipset is not designed for gaming and does not shine in that department. Even so, it can still run most casual (and even 3d racing) games quite smoothly.
  Video Playback testing (Using KODI)
Resolution Video Format Local Playback Network (Wi-Fi/LAN) Playback 720p (1280*720) AVC ([email protected]) Playing correctly Playing correctly 1080P (1920*1080) AVC (High@L4) Playing correctly Playing correctly 4K/UHD (4096*2304) AVC ([email protected]) Playing correctly Buffering  and stutter 2160P (3840*2160) HEVC (H.265) Playing correctly Playing correctly 4K TS HEVC files HEVC (H.265) 10Bit Does not play Does not play
Issues and bugs
Power off does not really power off the box. When I powered the box off via the power menu (long press on the remote power button), it would not turn back on – neither from the remote nor from the physical power button on the box. Only taking out the power cord and plugging it back allowed to turn the box back on.
Remote is not too great. Response is a bit spotty as button presses are not consistently detected.
Kodi Add-ons did not install properly at first time each time. Some required repeat attempts to get installed.
Google play games service crashes upon running, and so does not function correctly inside games.
Information overlay comes up on kodi while playing back video without user interaction, occasionally.
Upon opening the box and looking inside, I found that the heat-sink was not properly attached to the CPU but used thermal two-sided strips that did not keep it firmly in place. I had to use some thermal paste and re-adjust the heat-sink so as to avoid overheating later on.
Network performance
Network performance has been tested using Speedtest.net Internet speed measuring app, in WiFi and in Wired mode. My Internet connection is 200 Mbit Symmetric Fibre connection. Notice that the WiFi performance is quite good, and comparable to that of Tronsmart’s Vega S95 Telos:
WiFi (802.11ac 5 GHz)
Wired, over power lines
Gaming performance
I use an application called “GameBench” to measure frame rate and resource usage in games. However, since this box is brand new, and does not have a working root solution, my impressions are just descriptive and not measured:
Asphalt 8 Airborne – a 3d graphic intensive racing game. The game run fine, but not completely smooth. Loading screens were swift, but the during gameplay I experienced a small amount of jerkiness.
Angry Birds 2 – a popular 2d action game. Runs smoothly most of the time, with bits of slowdown both in-game and in menus.
Walking War Robots – an online robot warfare game that requires a game-pad (I don’t have a game-pad). Mostly smooth sailing, with very little to un-noticeable slower frame rate at times.
Conclusions
Did I like it? Yes, I did. It’s a strong and mostly stable contender in the s905 scene. The annoying lack of power button, and remote control issues will be resolved in the near firmware update, as they’re the top priority. Rooting will also be offered as a built in option in the first official firmware release.
Would I recommend it? Definitely. It may not be the best of the bunch, but it’s definitely one of the cheaper and most cost effective ones.
So you’d like to buy this box? you can find it here: Ugoos AM1 Android TV Box – Amlogic S905 SoC, 2GB RAM, Mali GPU, Kodi 16, UHD 4K, Android 5.1, Wi-Fi for a modest 74.47 USD!
