MELK

Today we stopped at Melk for the morning and we visited Aggstein Castle ruins. There are amazing views from here along the Danube and the Wachau valley. We are back on board this afternoon and cruising down to Durnstein where we will meet those who chose to cycle the 35km there rhis afternoon. Personally I'd rather sit on deck with a glass of wine and enjoy the scenery!

Happy Friday!

Last Friday, we were just finishing a few “days off” from our grandparenting duties. The next day, we started a new “shift” at a new location. We’re currently with the family of Child #2, which includes Grandkid #4 and Grandkid #5.

We took our break in Winston-Salem, NC. We’ve never stopped there before. It was on the way to our new location.

Because I’m old, I regularly read stuff about the aging process. Many articles address the ancient question: “How do you stay young?” Many experts say that you “stay young” by learning new things. They claim that you’ll “stay young” if you learn something new every day.

Life on the road is a constant learning experience. Here are some of the interesting things that I learned in Winston-Salem:

+ Within the Protestant branch of Christianity, there is an old sect called the Moravian Brethren. I’ve read more than my fair share of religious stuff. I’d never heard of the Moravians.

+ Moravia is a region in the Czech Republic. The sect was founded there in the 1400s. In America, the Moravians are thought of as a German group. That’s because in the 1700s many Moravians relocated to Germany to avoid persecution. The Moravians that ultimately came to America, to spread their religion here, came from the German wing of the Moravian Church. In 1735 they settled in Savannah, Georgia. In 1740, that group moved to Pennsylvania and started communities in Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Litiz. Needing more land, in 1753 they bought a large tract in North Carolina. That’s how they ended up in Winston-Salem.

+ Old Salem is a historic section of Winston-Salem. It became the hub for the Moravians in America. We had a fun- -and educational- -afternoon touring the historic area.

+ In 1722, the Moravians established an educational institution in Old Salem. It still exists. It’s currently called Salem College, and it’s still associated with the Moravian Church. Its a women’s college with 700 students. It looks very peaceful.

+ We took a long walk through the Moravian Cemetery. They have an unusual tradition. There are separate burial areas for men, women, and children. The strict segregation has something to do with how choir members are segregated at church. Families are not buried together.

+ Have you ever heard of a “plank road”? That was a new one on me. There was apparently a plank road boom in America from 1845-1855. In the era of horses and wagons, dirt roads made for slow travel. There were too many holes and ruts. As a road aged, the obstacles increased in size, depth, and number. A solution was to build a road out of planks. The roads looked like a narrow backyard deck. More than 10,000 miles of plank roads were built in America. A famous plank road, because it was 120 miles long, ran from Fayetteville to Old Salem. Before the plank road, the trip took four days. On the plank road, you could make the trip in 18 hours.

+ In 1875, possibly on an old plank road, a guy rode his horse into Winston-Salem. He bought land from the Moravians and he started a tobacco company. His name was R.J. Reynolds. The R.J. Reynolds company still exists, and it’s the second biggest tobacco company in America. It is still headquartered in Winston-Salem. It’s office tower dominates the downtown.

+ For his banking, Reynolds walked across the street to the local Wachovia Bank. Over the years in our travels, we’ve seen Wachovia branches. I always thought it was an odd name. It started in North Carolina, and the name is related to the Moravians. When they bought their large parcel of North Carolina land in 1753, they named it “Wachovia.” They named it after the Wachau Valley in Germany. That’s how the bank got its name too. You learn something new every day.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit Winston-Salem. It’s so-so. Thankfully, I can find something to learn in any town.

I hope you learned something new today. Maybe you knocked a few years off your age. I was a younger man when I left Winston-Salem.
