Early life of Gaozu of Liang
With the short biography of his mother, Zhang Shangrou. (From LS01 and LS07)
[LS01]
The Exalted Founder [gaozu], the Martial [wu] August Emperor, taboo Yan, courtesy name Shudai, child name Lian'er, was a native of Zhongdu Village in Nanlanling. He was a descendant of Han's Chancellor of State, He. He begat Marquis Ding of Zan, Yan. Yan begat the Attendant-at-Centre Biao. Biao begat Excellency office staff member Zhang. Zhang begat Hui. Fuzi begat the Arranger of Documents for the Southern Tower, Daoci. Daoci begat the August Father, taboo Shunzhi, he was Emperor Gao of Qi's younger clansman. He took part in preparations and aiding the mandate, and was ennobled Marquis of Linxiang County. He held successive office as Attendant-at-Centre, Commandant of Guards, Intendant of Affairs to the Heir-Apparent, General who Leads the Army, and Governor of Danyang. He was posthumously conferred General who Quells the North.
Gaozu in Xiaowu of Song's 8th Year of Daming [464 AD], a jiachen year, was born at the Sanqiao Residence, Tongxia Village, Moling County. At birth he was yet remarkable and unusual. His two hips had paired bones, the top of his head was high and raised, and there was a pattern in his right hand which said “martial” [武]. When the Emperor reached adulthood, he studied broadly and very thoroughly, was fond of devising strategies, and had talent and capacity for civil and martial matters. At the time those of flowing fame all pushed him forward and acknowledged him. At the houses where he resided, often if there was a cloud or vapour, for those people who sometimes passed by, their bodies immediately paid their respects.
He started his career as the Acting Army Advisor on the Board of Law of the Central Gentlemen of the South to the King of Baling. He moved to Libationer of the Eastern Pavilion to the General of Guards, Wang Jian [NQS23]. Jian once saw him, and deeply assessed and appreciated his unusualness. He spoke to He Xian of Lujiang, saying:
This Gentleman Xiao within thirty [year] will make Attendant-at-Centre, and if he sets out from here, his worth will be impossible to describe.
When the King of Jingling, Ziliang, opened his Western Mansion and summoned the students of literature, Gaozu together with Shen Yue [LS13], Xie Tiao [NQS47], Wang Rong, Xiao Chen [LS26], Fan Yun [LS13], Ren Fang [LS14], Lu Chui [LS27] and others all roamed with him, they were referred to as the Eight Friends. Rong was exceptional and vivacious, his understanding and perceptiveness exceeded other people. He particularly respected and found unusual Gaozu. Always when speaking of him to his friends, he said:
The steward who will order Under Heaven is surely this person.
He amassed to move to Consultant Army Advisor for Quelling the West to the King of Sui. Soon after he left his post due to the August Father's hardship.
[LS07]
The Changes says:
There was heaven and earth, afterwards there were the ten thousand things. There were the ten thousand things, afterwards there was man and woman. There were man and woman, afterwards there was husband and wife.
The propriety of husband and wife is the highest!
In the Rites of Zhou the King established the Queen's Six Palaces, with three Ladies, nine Concubines, twenty-seven Wives, and eighty-one Spouses, so as to heed Under Heaven's interior arrangements. For that reason the Marriage Propriety states:
The Son of Heaven and the Empress are like the sun and the moon, yin and yang, they are necessary to each other and complete.
Han in the beginning followed Qin's designations and titles. The Emperor's mother was called the August Empress-Dowager, the empress was called the August Empress, and they added to them the categories of Beautiful Lady, Good Lady, Eight Sons, and Seven Sons. Reaching Xiaowu, he regulated the favoured beauties and the likes in altogether fourteen grades. Coming down to Wei and Jin, for the titles of mothers and empresses both followed the Han rules. From Lady and downwards, [each] generations added and subtracted from them.
Gaozu swept away chaos and turned back to correctness. He deeply perceived extravagant and uninhibited, had bad clothes and meagre food, and applied himself to the previous modest frugality. His virtuous pairing ended early, Prolonger of Autumn was an empty position, and to the numbers of concubines and ladies nothing was changed or created. Taizong and Shizu set out from being the heirs-presumptive, yet the Consorts in both cases had passed previously, and they also did not establish pepper quarters. The present compilation only speaks of a provided for vacancy.
The Grand Founder's [taizu] Dedicated [xian] August Empress, Ms. Zhang, taboo Shangrou, was a native of Fangcheng in Fanyang. Her grandfather Cihui was Song's Grand Warden of Puyang. The Empress' mother, Ms. Xiao, was Emperor Wen's paternal aunt. [Emperor Wen is Emperor Wu's father, Xiao Shunzhi, posthumously elevated to emperor]
The Empress in the middle of Song's Yuanjia era [424 – 453] was given in marriage to Emperor Wen. She gave birth to King Xuanwu of Changsha, Yi and King Zhao of Yongyang, and next gave birth to Gaozu.
Earlier, the Empress was once within her room when she suddenly saw sweet-flag grass blooming in front of the courtyard with a brilliant hue shining bright like nothing out of the world. The Empress was startled at the sight, and spoke to her attendant, saying:
Do you see it, or not?
[The attendant] replied, saying:
Do not see it.
The Empress said:
[I] once heard those who see will be rich and honoured.
Following that she quickly took and swallowed it. That month she give birth to Gaozu. At the night she was about to give birth, the Empress saw inside the courtyard as if there were clothes and caps piled up and laid out therein.
She next gave birth to King Xuan of Hengyang, Chang, and Princess Zhao of Yixing, Ling. Song's 7th Year of Taishi [471 AD], she passed at a house in Tongxia Village in Moling County. She was buried at a mountain in Dongcheng Village in Wujin County. 1st Year of Tianjian, 5th Month, jiachen [6 August 502], she was retroactively elevated to the venerated title as August Empress. Her posthumous title was Dedicated [xian].

Luo Yizhou and his double standards lmao
first reactions regarding the same message: “That’s too thoughtful (...) Is it Jojo?”
vs
“Wang Jiachen wouldn’t be able to say something this cheesy (“rou ma”).”
--
aka that one time wang jiachen used yang haoming’s express message delivery service to tell yizhou that he doesn’t need to be overly considerate when making decisions, and yizhou is in shock that wang jiachen is capable of saying such sweet things
aka What has Wang Jiachen done to deserve this lmao

I love how team hunter did different dance performances for position evaluation because the contestants knew they were too powerful when performing together.

maybe after today’s acls training i can finally write that chengqing ER oneshot.
— “Patient male, mid-twenties, motor vehicle collision, eta 3 mins”
— “What no vitals? No GCS? ETA 3 mins? Who’s on the paramedic team?!”
— “No one….Dr. Lu hit someone with her car on her way out of the hospital.”
【A Midnight Conversation in Your Local ER】- Complete
[1]
The night hunt had gone to shits.
That much was undeniable.
Jiang Cheng heard the panicked shout of his disciples just as he saw the array that he had stepped on.
Fuck.
The ghost of an once mediocre demonic cultivator wanna-be was going to bring Jiang Cheng, Jiang Wanyin - the Sandu Shengshou - to meet his maker. The irony of the situation would be laughable, if he wasn’t so irrevocably screwed.
That was his last thought before his entire body was engulfed by a blinding light and the world he knew disappeared.
The ground beneath his feet gave away, weightlessness paralyzing his body though he did not fall. He felt…launched, his body warping and squeezing and stretching, the air sucked from his lungs into the endless black vacuum.
But just like that it was over. Jiang Cheng barely had time to make peace with his death before his feet touch solid earth again.
Or at least….he thought it was earth, this black, tarry hard thing striped with yellow and white. He stared at it dumbly, breathless and disoriented, barely able to react when a loud blare assaulted his senses and his world went blindly bright yet again.
This time there was pain.
Jiang Cheng clutched Sandu, ready to fight, but then his head hit the ground and everything went dark. When he woke up again, an indeterminate amount of time later, he was in a small tube and had a distinct feeling he was not wearing pants, socks or shoes.
How the fuck do you ‘scan’ a cat???
[2]
Method actor. The nurse, from the other side of the curtain, mouthed silently.
“Sir, can you tell me your name.”
“Jiang Cheng, Jiang Wangyin.”
The resident paused, awkwardly contemplating how to continue. “Uh…..which is it? Jiang Cheng or Jiang Wanyin?”
“Jiang Cheng, zi Wanyin.”
“Traditional parents?” The resident tried to crack a joke, but it fell flat. The strange man stared up at him with a blank look in his eyes and a frown that was rapidly deteriorating into a scowl. The resident cleared his throat and cast his eyes back onto his clipboard. “Uh, ahem, just the name on your ID please.”
“My what?"
"Your personal ID….like a driver’s license?”
“Cultivators of the gentry fly on swords or ride horses. We do not rely on carriage valets.”
“Eh… right. Uhm, can you tell me how old you are and what year it is.”
“I’m 39, and the year is jiachen.”
Lu Qi frowned from where she stood by the door, arms crossed, watching her resident and medical student work. 39? He looks like a college student. But he also thinks he can fly, so I guess age is the least of our worries.
“Jiachen.…?”
The M3 fished his phone out from his scrub pocket pocket and typed it in. “Sounds like the ganji system, like an old timey way to record year used in the past.” He whispers clandestinely to the resident.
“….Right. And uh, do you where you are?”
The man scowled at him. “Am I supposed to?”
The resident scribbled something on the chart, and then looked up with a plastered awkward smile. “Well, thank you Mr. Jiang for your patience. Wang Fei here is the medical student on our team. He’s going to stay and ask you a couple more questions if you don’t mind. Afterwards we’ll confer with our attending and the team will be back to see you shortly.”
As he turned away, the R3 grimaced and shared a look with Lu Qi, who was the youngest attending physician in their ER, but was not technically working at the moment and so was not on the case. And technically, as the perpetrator who hit Jiang Cheng with her car, she had a severe conflict of interest.
At least this Jiang Cheng dude didn’t seem keen on pressing personal charges against her for MVA or suing the hospital in general… but that being said…
Yeah, they’re going to need a psych consult.
Unless he’s on acid.
Well… okay, psych consult either way.
[3]
"It’s okay, you can relax.” Jiang Cheng said, waving dismissively at the woman standing by his bedside. “I’m not going to take you to the magistrate for hitting me with your carriage - car. You didn’t mean to, and I just came out of nowhere.”
“....Thank you.”
“You’re not Wen Qing. I know that now. Your name is Lu Qi. You can call off those psychia - psych - psychics - head healers - or whatever, I’m not crazy. It’s not my fault, you just… look so much like someone I used to know."
"Wen Qing.” Lu Qi echoed.
“Yeah. Wen Qing. She was a healer - a doctor - like you, but different.”
“I see. What happened to her?"
"She died. Almost twenty years ago."
"I'm sorry... that's awful.” Lu Qi’s response rolled off her tongue so well, because she had said those word a thousand times during her residency. So much so that it no longer had much meaning to her. Tonight however, she meant what she said. “Were you two close?"
"No, well…yes, maybe. No we weren’t exactly friends if that’s what you’re asking. She...operated on me. Without my consent or knowledge. Took my brother’s golden core and put it in me and then lied with my brother to my face about it. So no we weren’t “close”, but Wen Qing saved my life - well the purpose of it anyway. Saved me from a life of ordinariness.”
Lu Qi did allow herself to dwell too much on what the fuck a “golden core” was, because her gut response was almost instantaneous. “That’s shitty of her.”
She clamped down on her tongue.
God, why did I have to say that? To his face?! He was obviously in love with this Wen Qing person and they were encroaching on some dangerous emotional territories, but Lu Qi swallowed down her caution and plowed on nevertheless. There were things she felt she had to say, and since she’d already hit him with her car, how much worse could this shit get? “What I mean is she shouldn’t have. Not without telling you. Besides...there’s nothing wrong with ordinary.”
Jiang Cheng chuckled bitterly. “Maybe you’re right. Still...she didn’t deserve to die. What her clan did was not her fault.”
Now that threw Lu Qi off. Did this guy...kill her?
Lu Qi half wondered if she stumbled upon a Yakuza-esque member whose psyche finally snapped after years of murder and violence. And yet, he seemed perfectly coherent, no flight of ideas, no tangential thought, no hallucations. Even his delusions seemed...logical.
I must be the one losing, damnit.
Jiang Cheng scratched a little at his chest, as if palpating for the “golden core” that he spoke of. "She saved my life, but when she needed help, I couldn't save her. But, if I were to go back… I can't say I'll choose differently. My clan needed me, my clan who was almost cleansed by hers. No, no I wouldn’t choose differently. I don’t regret my choices, but I am sorry. Sorry to her, sorry to my brother. I'll always be sorry that she died, and that I failed her when she needed me."
Jiang Cheng had no idea why he was telling this stranger any of this, but maybe after twenty years, he was finally ready to address this guilt that he lived with. I mean who else was he supposed to tell? Jin Ling? It was nice, to have that face as an audience, receiving his words of confession.
"She would forgive you."
Lu Qi had no idea why she was offering absolution as if she had authority in this matter, but when she said it, the conviction she felt was so real, it was almost as though some external force was acting through her.
Which was ridiculous of course, but...
"How do you know? You're not her." Jiang Cheng shook his head. “I wouldn’t forgive me.”
"No, but you said she was a physician. So she should know, more than most, that sometimes there is no choosing who gets to live or die."
Jiang Cheng fell quiet at that, and his gaze grew distant. Lu Qi thought perhaps he was no longer seeing her as she was in front of him - white coat, scrubs, stethoscope -  but someone entirely different. The tension he held in his shoulders slowly eased, and he sighed. In the silence that stretched between them, Lu Qi hoped that this strange man with his strange past could find a sliver of peace.
[4]
— Did you love her?
— I thought so, foolishly, but maybe I didn’t. Even if I did, it was not well enough.
— Do you love her still?
— No... I don’t know. It’s been too long...but sometimes, late at night when Lotus Pier is quiet, I think I do.
...
— Are you ashamed of it?
...
— No. No I’m not.
[5]
The patient known as Jiang Cheng left AMA, that is, against medical advice. It was the term they used sometimes for people who just up and leave without informing the team.
Lu Qi had gone out to check on his labs, which came back with bonker numbers (I mean really, a hemoglobin of 455, sodium of 200, and a HCO3 of like...3?), but Jiang Cheng was gone from Bay 6 when she returned. The nurse made the overhead page, a code yellow was called, but four hours later, Lu Qi was ready to admit that she was never going to see this Jiang Cheng ever again.
Somehow, she was okay with that. She had said what needed to be said.
Her chief had given her a call on her cell and told her to go home and sleep. The guy didn’t look like he was gonna press charges, let’s count our blessings and move on. But the night had just been too damn strange that Lu Qi was all wired up from it and couldn’t possibly fall asleep. She had handover at 10 anyway. There was a change of clothes and toiletries in her bag. She could always take a shower in the anesthesia staff’s on call room and sleep until then.
Dr. Sun was the anesthesia staff on-call tonight and was currently stuck in trauma OR. They were buddies since medschool; she’d understand.
Sighing, Lu Qi took a seat on the bench across from the bougie cafe in the lobby of the hospital. At this hour, it was the only one still open in the entire facility. The drinks they sold cost an arm and a leg, but Lu Qi needed the pick-me-up after the night she had.
As she nursed the last bit of her matcha latte, two bickering voices pulled her attention to the front entrance.
“Aiyo, A-Liang I already said I’m fine! I don’t need to be here!”
“Fuck out of here with that bullshit, Chen Zhaoxi. You fell off the fucking roof! If Wu Kun hadn’t called me, you’d have gone on -”
It was him! Lu Qi shot up. It was Jiang Cheng!
But no...no it wasn’t him. The well-dressed man dragging the second man (dressed in red pajamas) into the hospital was not Jiang Cheng. He had the same face - chiselled, handsome, scowling - but it wasn’t him. For one, his hair was trimmed short and neat, unlike Jiang Cheng who looked like he walked straight out of a BL xianxia tv drama. Secondly, his face was softer, eyes younger, and he couldn’t have been older than Lu Qi herself in her early thirties.
“I was just trying to get to the litter of kittens trapped -”
“Yes, yes, and it was very heroic and I’m sure it would’ve made Wu Kun very horny, and you morons probably would’ve fucked once he got home had you not made a valiant attempt at breaking your neck -”
“Excuse me,” the security guard manning the information desk chastised sharply. “It’s 4am. This is a hospital! Lower your voices, sirs.”
“Sorry.” The men apologized sheepishly.
Then, A-Liang, Jiang Cheng’s doubleganger asked, “Could you please direct us to the ER? This is my brother, he fell off a roof.”
Lu Bin had no idea what possessed her to interject. “I can take you there.”
All eyes fell on her. She walked towards them, heart pounding.
This can’t be happening, this kind of thing just can’t happen...
A-Liang’s face broke into a grateful smile. “Thank you, Miss -” Then his gaze trailed to her badge, and he corrected himself, “Dr. Lu. I’m Shen Liang. This is my brother Chen Zhaoxi. I think he fractured...well multiple things, please help him.”
“Of course, come with me. Let’s get him a wheelchair. If he fractured is leg, he probably shouldn’t be walking.”
“I didn’t fracture -”
“You, you shut up.” Shen Liang rolled his eyes. “Don’t listen to him. He can lose three out of four limbs and say ‘ t’s but a flesh wound’.”
Lu Qi couldn’t help but chuckle as she put an arm under the complaining Chen Zhaoxi and helped him towards the wheelchair.
Shen Liang’s smile widened.
[Extra]
“Holy shit, took you long enough!”
When Jin Ling and Lan Sizhui finally dragged Jiang Cheng to their portal site, Jiang Cheng realized that the transportation talisman had created a channel through realities between what looked like two metal garbage dumpsters in a back alley behind a food establishment marked by giant yellow bunny ears.
Standing guard there, Lan Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen were each munching on a strange layered bread and holding tall drinks contained in...what was it called again? Right. Styrofoam.
“What is that?” Jin Ling wrinkled is nose at it. Brat.
“It’s a Big Mac.” Replied Lan Jingyi as if Jin Ling was stupid. “And this is a milk shake.”
Jin Ling scowled. “I said the bag of gold I gave you was for emergencies.”
“Yeah but we were hungry.” Ouyang Zizhen defended. He neglected to tell them that the cashier had refused to accept the gold and instead asked for “cash” or “card”, neither of which they had, so Zizhen used a liiiiil confounding talisman he learned from Wei Wuxian. They did leave more than enough gold though...and that ought to cover the restaurant’s cost for their “burger”lary . Reaching into the brown paper bag he held under one arm, Zizhen pulled out a little box that opened to show pieces of... something. “These are chicken nuggets. They’re delicious! Try one! They’re really good with this sauce....hold on...”
Lan Sizhui sighed. “We don’t have time for this. The portal will close soon. Let’s get Jiang-zongzhu home and we can sample these exotic food later.”
The boys agreed.
Jiang Cheng shook his head and huffed.

Qing Chun You Ni 3, Third Elimination Thoughts...
... and my personal top 9 going into the final.
I’m going to put this under a cut for spoilers reasons. I definitely have Thoughts. It’s going to be interesting to see how the move from 2-pick to 1-pick for the vote affects things for the final.
First of all, a sad goodbye to some trainees I really liked:
Jiang Jingzuo: I’ve liked him since Idol Producer and Tangram, and I really hope that things go smoothly for him from here. He’s so well rounded and has improved so much since IP and has such a lovely personality and dynamic with other contestants. I had hoped (and kind of expected) for him to get all the way to the final, even if I wasn’t sure that I believed in the chance of him debuting.
Wang Jiachen: I’m sad each time a member of Team Hunter leaves, they were one of the auditions that left the biggest impression on me. Also, Sun Yinghao gets so sad every time, and he’s my favorite, so that definitely contributes to me not wanting the others to be eliminated.
Cao Yu: Amazing dancer, and really great big brotherly energy towards a lot of the other trainees. Going to miss that for some of my favorites.
Chen Junhao: I just really like the music he makes, and he’s got great vocal and rap (and raps in a style I like, a rarity). He’s also really entertaining.
Zhang Siyuan: A rapper I like (again, this isn’t super common for me to like a rapper as a rapper) who is also an excellent vocalist. He’s also just got a really great dynamic with so many trainees, and it was fun to see him balance saying something very real about some of the remaining trainees skills while still not making it harsh.
Deng Zeming: Going to miss those vocals on the show. I wish he’d tried a few things a little further out of his comfort zone, he was so close to making it through.
There were other trainees that I liked (a lot of them at this point), but those are the ones that were eliminated this round that have been on my mind.
Some Disappointments from this Elimination:
(Other than eliminations)
Liu Jun dropping out of top 9. I’ve been worried that it might happen, and I do still hope that there’s a chance of him climbing back up. The vote margins are so tight from 8-20 honestly that there’s so much that could happen!
Several trainees who really just don’t have the debut skills ranking pretty high. I’m not going to name names, but you probably know who I am thinking about. I don’t mind any of them individually, and honestly find all of them at least charming to some degree. It’s going to be a strain on the group’s ability to be good performers if more than one of them breaks into the top 9 for the final though, and one of them seems nearly guaranteed to make it. This isn’t a new disappointment/worry, but it was a rather vivid one for this elimination.
Some Excitements from this Elimination:
Wang Nanjun made it through! I was worried about him, and I like him quite a bit. I’m glad that he’ll make it as far as the final even if I’m not sure that he has any sort of chance at debut at this point.
Yang Haoming made it through! Basically the same thing as Wang Nanjun, they’re both so talented, and I really enjoy their personalities and friendships on the show. I’m glad to see them both go to the finals.
Liu Guanyou into the top 9! He’s an excellent all around performer, and he’s adorable. I think that he’d be a really good part of the line up, and it’s good to see him getting that recognition.
Sun Yinghao (Kachine) having his rank go up a little! He is my favorite and he continues his steady climb. It makes me less worried for him going into the final.
Duan Xingxing staying in the top 9 (though going down a rank makes me antsy). One of the two stars of Team Hunter, and he’s also super well rounded as a performer.
Lian Huaiwei’s seeming stability in the upper rankings. He was someone I was worried might drop going from 9 pick to 2 pick, and he didn’t, which makes me less worried about him dropping going to 1 pick as well (though not completely unworried). I just want him to debut this time. He was so close in QCYN1.
My Personal Top Nine Going Into the Final:
Sun Yinghao (Kachine): Amazing dancer, and I really like his relationship with gender presentation. He’s a good, caring team member, and he’s a solid dance teacher (something that I expect that the final 9 may need a few of). Also just his attachment to his teammates and the way he cries over people leaving makes me soft. His vocals/rap do still need work, but considering that he came in with next to no vocal/rap training, and he has potential, I’m not too worried about it. One of the nice things about being in a group is that you can select lines for people based on their strengths.
Liu Jun: Amazing dancer, amazing choreographer, so very sweet and kind with other trainees, really good at teaching and breaking down dance for others (and look this is probably going to be a skill that the final team needs). Also charming and ridiculous. I really really want him to have the chance to be in the debut team because he seems to want it so much. Like with Yinghao, his vocals need some training, but he’s definitely got (a lot of) potential on that front.
Wang Nanjun (Krystian): It’s been creeping up on me how much I like him. If he wasn’t really all around skilled and a considerate teammate (it didn’t get focused on much, but there were a lot of snippets of him helping in the background of “Bamboo” practices after everything reshuffled), I could see how some of his personality might annoy me a little bit, but instead, it’s endearing to me, especially because of how the other contestants (especially Liu Jun) respond to him. I don’t have high hopes of him actually getting in (he just made it through this elimination), but I really do like him and want to see more from him.
Duan Xingxing: Another amazing dancer, also a really well-rounded contestant and performer just in general. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by his voice. I love how he’s so into cuter concepts despite initial impression.
Yang Haoming: He’s grown on me a lot as the show progresses! He’s amazingly well rounded, and he’s really held his own in very competitive stages! I want to see more performances from him.
Liu Guanyou: Another very versatile, well-rounded performer. His interactions with other trainees (especially Duan Xingxing) and how adorable he is really sell him as a final member for me.
Lian Huaiwei: He’s gotten so much better since QCYN1, and he was already honestly ready for the group then. I love how he’s meshed with this group, and I have really high hopes for him to debut.
Luo Yizhou: I’ve liked him pretty much from the start, and he’s finally making it onto my list. I do think that he’d make a good center (he did really well for the theme song), and he’s really well rounded, but also, excellent dancer. More vocal stability from him will definitely come with more training too.
Yu Jingtian (Tony) or Sun Yihang: I cannot choose which of the two I like more. I’ve liked Yu Jingtian since PDX101, and he’s gotten so much better since then, but he still feels incredibly young, and I’m worried for his current stress levels. He’s the slightly better rounded contestant of the two of them, but they’re both solid on that front. Sun Yihang appears in many ways to be the more mature of the two (sometimes that year-ish makes a big difference), and he’s an amazing dancer. I really love his dynamics with a lot of other trainees (especially Lian Huaiwei). Also, the idea of there being two SYHs in the group is really funny to me.
Thoughts on 2-Pick to 1-Pick:
Trainees with strong pair ups in voting are likely to take a hit from 2-pick to 1-pick, and the question becomes: how even is the actual vote distribution/which trainee takes more of the pair pick.
Some pairs that I feel like this could notably effect:
Sun Yinghao and Chang Huasen: My instinct on this one is that we’re going to see Chang Huasen drop several places from this, and Sun Yinghao will carry a lot of the 1-pick. I do know that Chang Huasen has a pretty dedicated following of his own, and I’ve not looked at the fundraising data enough to be sure, but the narrative being shown on the show very much seems like Sun Yinghao is the one carrying this, but it could definitely be a notable vote hit for him (I’m not too worried about his place in the top 9 though, just a little, especially because he’s my favorite). To be clear on this front, I think that Chang Huasen is charming and very pretty, but he’s very much nowhere near my top 9 because his skills are in need of quite a bit more work.
Duan Xingxing and Liu Guangyou: I feel like this is one where they might be a pretty even match up (though either Liu Guangyou picks up more spare second votes or has developed a stronger individual fandom based on him shooting past Duan Xingxing, my guess is on the former actually). This is concerning to me for both of their sakes because I could see it basically halving both of their vote rates. Hopefully they both have strong enough fandoms to carry them through.
Luo Yizhou and Tang Jiuzhou (Jojo): I suspect that this will hit Tang Jiuzhou harder than Luo Yizhou at this point (this might not have been true early in the season, but I do think that Luo Yizhou is very solidly one of the top fandom powers in the show at this point). I do think that most Tan Jiuzhou voters are probably also Luo Yizhou voters, and people who like the two of them as individuals pretty equally strike me as being more likely to vote for Luo Yizhou (the initial center, and much more skilled trainee) in 1-pick. However, while I predict there’s a good chance of Tang Jiuzhou’s rank dropping a little bit, I think that he’s pretty likely to stay in top 9. I’m honestly not sure that he’s ready to debut, but he does seem to work hard and is receptive to teaching, so I’m getting myself used to the idea.
Lian Huaiwei and Sun Yihang: This is another I suspect that there’s a pretty even split pair, and I’m worried that it’s going to negatively impact both of their rankings a fair bit for the final. I’m hoping that that’s not the case and that they both are able to hold onto their positions well.
A trainee that I worry might have a sudden drop because he strikes me as a potentially common second pick is Shi Qi (Chase Lee). He’s got great dynamics with a bunch of other trainees (including Yu Jingtian), and I worry that that will end up with him falling drastically.
Some Random Episode Thoughts:
I don’t love the ghost prank in general (though it’s a staple of this show at this point, so I’ve come to accept it will be a thing). But Sun Yinghao and Yang Haoming just being like, “Sorry I’m too busy having emotions to engage with this prank, let me cry,” was probably my favorite reaction that I’ve ever seen to these pranks (I am so soft for both of them about this).
I am really looking forward to mentor collab stages!

Rise of Sixteen States: 308
Wang Mi goes on a trip.
8 February 308 – 27 January 309
(Jin's 2nd Year of Yongjia)
(Han's 1st Year of Yongfeng)
(Cheng's 3rd Year of Yanping)
(Liu Yuan & Wang Mi)
1st Year of Yongfeng [308 AD] Spring, 1st Month [8 February – 8 March], the King of Han, Yuan, dispatched the General who Consoles the Army, Cong, and others, ten generals, to go south and occupy Taihang, and the General who Assists the Han, Shi Le, and others, ten generals, to go down east into Zhao and Wei.
Wang Mi withdrew to assemble the absconded and dispersed. The multitudes were again greatly excited. Gou Xi joned with them in battle, but was not able to overcome. Mi advanced the troops to rob Taishan, Lu state, Qiao, Liang, Chen, Runan, Yingchuan, Xiangcheng etc. commanderies
Summer, 4th Month, dinghai [19 May], he entered Xuchang, opened the offices and armouries, and took the instruments and canes.
At places that were lost and gone, he very much killed the wardens and prefects, and had a multitude of several ten thousand. The Imperial Court was not able to exercise authority. The various commandery wardens wanted all to run away and leave. The Grand Tutor, [the King of Donghai,] Yue, dispatched his Marshal, Wang Bin, to lead 5 000 armoured soldiers to enter and guard the Imperial City.
5th Month [5 June – 4 July], Mi entered from Huanyuan, and defeated the Public Army at Yibei [or “north of the Yi”].
The Imperial District greatly shook. The palace and city gates were shut in daylight. The Minister over the Masses, Wang Yan, and others led the hundred officials to resist and defend.
On renxu [23 June], Mi arrived at Luoyang, he stayed at the Jinyang Gate. A decree used Wang Yan [as] Commander-in-Chief of All Army Affairs of Conquering and Chastising.
On jiazi [25 June], Yan, together with Wang Bin and others, set out to fight.
On yichou [26 June], Mi burnt the Jianchun Gate and went east. Yan dispatched the General of Guards of the Left, Wang Bing to pursue him. They fought at the Seven Li Brook, and again defeated him. He therefore crossed the He to return to Liu Yuan. He went with Wang Sang from Zhi Pass to Pingyang. Yuan heard and was greatly pleased. He dispatched his Palace Attendant and concurrent Imperial Clerk Grandee, Jiao Ying, to deliver a letter to Mi, which said:
Since the General has merit not of this generation, and surpasses the virtue of the times. Because of that [we] have this greeting, that is all. While waiting to gaze on the General's arrival, Your Orphan now has newly journeyed to the General's official residence, to straight away dust off the mat and cleanse the beakers, and respectfully wait on the General.
When Mi saw Yuan, he recommended declaring the venerated title. Yuan spoke to Mi, saying:
Your Orphan originally spoke to the General like Dou Zhougong, that was all. Now [you] truly are my Kongming and Zhonghua. Liezu had a saying: “I having the General is like the fish having water”.
Hence he appointed Mi Colonel Minister of Retainers, concurrently Palace Attendant and Specially Advanced. Mi firmly declined.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Autumn, 7th Month [3 August – 1 September], phoenixes assembled at Puzi. The Imperial Chancellor, Liu Xuan, and others, 64 people, sent up [to assume] the venerated title.
On jiachen [4 August], Liu Yuan robbed Pingyang. The Grand Warden, Song Chou, fled to the capital city. The Grand Administrator of Hedong, Lu Shu, battled powerfully and died there.
Winter, 10th Month, jiaxu [2 November], Liu Yuan usurped the title of August Emperor in the southern suburbs. A great amnesty and changed the inaugural to Yongfeng [“Perpetual Phoenixes”].
11th Month [30 November – 28 December], used his son the General of Guards, He, as Great General, and the [General who] Consoles the Army, Cong, as Great General of Chariots and Cavalry. his junior kinsman the [General who] Establishes the Martial, Yao, as Dragon-Prancing Great General.
On bingwu [4 December], Han's Commander-in-Chief of All Army Affairs in the Centre and Outside, Great Marshal and acting Imperial Chancellor, the Worthy King of the Right, Xuan, passed on.
12th Month, yihai [2 January 309], Yuan used his Great General, Liu He, as Great Marshal, ennobled King of Liang, the Prefect of the Masters of Writings, Liu Huanle, as Great Minister over the Masses, ennobled King of Chenliu, the Empress' father, the Imperial Clerk Grandee, Huyan Yi, as Great Minister of Works, ennobled Duke of Yanzhou commandery. The imperial clan, considering the close and estranged as equals, were wholly ennobled kings of commanderies and counties. Those with a different family name, differentiated by their deeds and schemes, were all ennobled dukes and marquises of commanderies and counties.
(Shi Le & Wang Mi)
(JS104, Chronicle of Shi Le: Liu Yuan sent Liu Cong to attack Huguan. He instructed Le to be in command of 7 000 as Chief-Controller of the Vanguard. Liu Kun dispatched Army-Protector Huang Xiu to save Huguan. Le defeated Xiu at Baitian, and Xiu died there. Le thereupon captured Huguan. Yuan instructed Le, together with Liu Ling, Yan Pi, and others, seven generals, to lead a multitude of 30 000 to rob the various ramparts and fortifications of Wei commandery and Dunqiu. They captured many of them and made use of the rampart masters as Generals and Chief Commandants. They chose the strong and large as army soldiers, and the old and weak to secure the earthen walls like before. The army had no private plundering and the hundred families held them dear.
When Yuan usurped the title, he dispatched envoys to confer on Le Holding the Tally and Great General who Pacifies the East; Colonel, Chief-Controller and King like before. Le combined the armies to rob Ye. Ye was vanquished. He Yu ran to Weiguo. He seized the Grand Warden of Wei commandery, Wang Cui, at the Three Terraces. He advanced to attack Zhao commandery, and murdered Ji Province's Chief Commandant of the Western section, Feng Chong. He attacked the beg-for-life [leaders] She Ting and Tian Yin at Zhongqiu, and killed both of them.)
(JS100, Biography of Wang Mi: [Wang Mi] was sent to accompany Liu Yao to rob Henei, and again with Shi Le to attack Linzhang.
At the beginning of Yongjia [307 – 313], he robbed Shangdang and besieged Huguan. The King of Donghai, Yue, dispatched the Interior Clerk of Huainan, Wang Kuang, and the Grand Warden of Anfeng, Wei Qian, and others to chastise him. When Mi fought with them between Gaodu and Changping, he greatly defeated them. The dead were six or seven out of ten.
Yuan advanced Mi to Great General who Conquers the East, ennobled Duke of Donglai. He and Liu Yao, Shi Le, and others attacked Wei commandery, Ji commandery, and Dunqiu, and captured more than fifty fortifications, all were mustered as army soldiers. Again he and Le attacked Ye. The General who Calms the North, He Yu, abandoned the city and ran.)
(JS005, Annals of Emperor Huai: 2ndYear of Yongjia, Spring, 2nd Month, gengzi [3 April], Shi Le robbed Changshan. Jin's General who Calms the North, Wang Jun chastised and routed him.
3rd Month [8 April – 6 May], Liu Yuan invaded Ji commandery and roughly had the lands of Dunqiu and Henei.
9thMonth [2 October – 30 October], Shi Le robbed Zhao commandery. The General who Conquers the North, He Yu, fled from Ye to Weiguo.
Winter, 10th Month, jiaxu [2 November], Liu Yuan usurped the title of Emperor at Pingyang, still calling [his state] Han.
11th Month, jiyou [7 December 308], Shi Le robbed Ye. The Grand Warden of Wei, Wang Cui, was defeated in battle, and died there.)
3rd Year, 7thMonth [22 August – 20 September 309], Liu Yuan dispatched his son Cong and Wang Mi to rob Shangdang, they besieged Huguan. The Inspector of Bing province, Liu Kun, sent troops to aid them, they were defeated by Cong. The Interior Clerk of Huainan, Wang, Kuang, and Generals Shi Rong and Cao Chao and fought with Cong, and were also defeated. Chao and Rong died there. The Grand Warden of Shangdang, Pang Chun, used the commandery to surrender to the thieves.
Tumblr media
(In 313 what was left of the Jin court renamed the city of Ye to Linzhang to avoid the personal name of the new emperor, Sima Ye, posthumously Emperor Min. But the new name does not seem to have caught on in the north, presumably because the Jin empire no longer controlled Ye by that point. And just below the city is again referred to as Ye. Quite likely JS100 uses both northern and southern sources, directly or indirectly, which has created this inconsistency.)
(It seems impossible to reconcile the sources at this point. If we ignore the reference in JS100 in to Shi Le Linzhang as a duplicate from a different source, the accounts in JS104 and JS100 are overall pretty similar, though note that JS104 does not mention of Wang Mi at this point. Both Shi Le and Wang Mi take part in military operations in Shangdang, including the siege of Huguan, possibly under the overall leadership of Liu Cong. It was after this according to JS104 that Liu Yuan took imperial titles, and at his ascension Shi Le was rewarded with higher titles. Wang Mi also receives new titles after the fall Huguan, though there is no direct reference in JS100 to Liu Yuan declaring himself emperor. Then the Han commanders descend onto the plain, plunder several commanderies, and take the surrender of the many locally organized fortifications that had sprung up in these chaotic times – these might have been helpful against roving bandits but stood no chance against more organized forces. JS104 and JS100 both specifically refer to the recruitment of these local defenders as “army soldiers” 軍士. Then Shi Le and Wang Mi proceed to attack Ye, and the Jin commander, He Yu, abandons the city and flees. JS104 continues to say that Shi Le then “advanced to attack Zhao commandery”.
JS004 records under the 2nd Year of Yongjia, 2ndMonth, that Shi Le plundered in Changshan but was defeated by Wang Jun this is not in JS104. In the 3rd Month, Liu Yuan attacked Ji commandery. Based on JS100 it seems plausible that this attack was led by Liu Yao, and “Liu Yuan invaded” is just short for “Liu Yuan sent Liu Yao to invade”. 9th Month, Shi Le invades Zhao commandery and He Yu abandons Ye, apparently before the city is under direct attack. 10th Month, Liu Yuan declares himself emperor. 11th Month, Shi Le captures Ye, Jin's Grand Warden, Wang Cui, dies during the fall of the city. 3rdYear of Yongjia, 7th Month, Han forces attack Shangdang and besiege Huguan. A relief army under Wang Kuang is defeated by Wang Mi and the commandery surrenders.
So the fall of Shangdang, which according to JS104 took place before Liu Yuan declared himself emperor, in JS005 only takes place the following year. ZZTJ disputes that it was the 7th Month but agrees with JS005 on the year, so I will save that argument for later. Then Shi Le, after being defeated in Changshan, enters Zhao commandery, He Yu flees, Liu Yuan declares himself, emperpor, Shi Le takes Ye, which was in Wei commandery. This appear to directly contradict JS1004 where the sequence goes Shi Le takes Huguan, Liu Yuan declares himself emperor, Shi Le and others captures various forts in Wei and Dunqiu, Shi Le attacks Ye which falls, He Yu flees, Shi Le advances into Zhao.
It's not entirely impossible to merge the accounts in JS005 and JS105 together. There could have been fighting in Shangdang in both 308 and 309 and maybe some of the battles in 308 got confused with battles in 309. It is quite possible that after sacking Ye, Shi Le moved back into Zhao. But I don't feel like making an attempt right now. Therefore the map below follows the account in JS005 where this contradicts JS104. My previous post in this series included a section from JS104 on how Shi Le suborned the men of a Wuhuan leader located in Leping. From a base in Leping, Shi Le would have been well-positioned to plunder Changshan and Zhao, and move south from there against Ye. If at the same time the armies of Wang Mi and Liu Yao were plundering in Ji, Wei and Dunqiu, the defenders of Ye would appear to have been in a pretty bad position.
As a final note, I should perhaps add that the maps are intended as illustrations to the text. They are not intended to mean that Han were in full control of the territory within its “borders”. The Jin state had collapsed and in the countryside what had replaced it was not a new Han state, but various local “rampart masters” and similar who submitted to every real army passing by.)
(Liu Xuan)
Liu Xuan, courtesy name Shize, was plain, blunt and with few words. He was fond of studying, and cultivated purity. His teacher was Sun Yan of Le'an. He was deeply focused on gathering thoughts, not resting day or night, and was fond of the Mao Poetry and Mr Zuo's Traditions. Yan always commended him, saying:
If Xuan had met Wu of Han, he would have exceeded Jin Midi.
When his studies were complete, he turned back. He did not set out from the village gates probably for several years. Always when reciting the Book of Han, when he reached the Biographies of Xiao He and Deng Yu, he not once did not turn around to chant them, saying:
A man of great talent, if he met the Two Founders, in the end he would not make the Two Excellencies alone hold first place in pleasing before [the ruler].
The Inspector of Bing province, Wang Guang, spoke about him to Emperor Wu. The Emperor summoned him to audience. He praised his divination replies, and because of that said:
When I had not yet seen Xuan, I said Guang's words were empty and that was all. Now I have seen him advancing and halting with manners and decorum, he can truly be said to be like a jade sceptre. Observing his natural quality, he is more than able to console and assemble his home section.
He therefore used Xuan as Chief Controller of the Right Section, and specially gave him a red cloth curved canopy. He managed the officials purely and respectfully, and for that the section cherished him.
Yuan became king [because of] Xuan's plans. For that reason he especially received respect and esteem, in merit and kinship he had no equal. In army and state, inside and outside, there was nothing he had not sole control of.
(Liu Cong)
When Yuan claimed the great title, he designated him Great Marshal, ennobled as King of Chu.
(Li Xiong)
3rd Year of Yanping, Winter, 12thMonth [29 December 308 – 27 January 309], Cheng's Prefect of the Masters of Writing, Yang Bao, passed on.
(The source text for the anecdotes below refers to Yang Bao as “Chancellor”, this may have been a posthumous conferral.)
Earlier, Li Xiong's thoughts were on his summons reaching distant regions, [but] what used by the state was insufficient. For that reason the various generals always advanced with gold, silver and precious treasure, and very much were thereby obtaining their offices. The Chancellor, Yang Bao, remonstrated, saying:
Your Majesty is the master of Under Heaven, and must net and catch the Four Seas. Why are [you] using offices to buy gold!
Xiong apologized with humble phrases.
Later Xiong was once drunk on alcohol and pushed the Prefect of the Palace Writers, and caned the Prefect of the Grand Officials Bao advanced to say:
The Son of Heaven is clement and benevolent, the various vassals splendid and sublime. How can [you] be the Son of Heaven and yet bet drunk!
Xiong promptly let them go.
Xiong had no affairs and set out for a short while. Bao from behind him grasped a lance and galloped his horse past Xiong. Xiong was curious and asked him. He replied, saying:
In all cases the weight of governing Under Heaven is like Your Subject riding a hateful horse and holding a lance. Hurry it on and worry about wounding yourself. Slow it down and fear its loss. Hence the horse galloped and was not controlled.
Xiong realized and promptly returned.
Before this, the southern lands in repeated years had famine and plague, the dead numbered a million. The Colonel of the Southern Yi, Li Yi, firmly defended and did not surrender. Xiong enticed the Yi of Jianning and sent them to chastise him. Yi passed on from illness and the city was lost. They killed more than 3 000 strong soldiers, and sent off the wives and daughters, a thousand mouths, to Chengdu.
(HYGZ04 dates Li Yi's death to 306 under somewhat different circumstances that what described here. As Li Xiong was not really involved and this is getting long enough, I have not included it here.)
(Yiwen Leiju quoting the Book of Li Xiong of Shu: During the reign of the Martial [wu] August Emperor, Xiong, in the 3rd Year of Grand Cheng, a white crow with a red foot came soaring. The Emperor asked Fan Xian [i.e. Fan Changsheng] about it. Xian said:
The crow has the right-princeliness of returning back with food. Surely there are distant people who hold dear your kindness and come. As a result drifting people from Guanzhong request to surrender.)
(HYGZ08: 2nd Year [of Yongjia], decreed to write a record of [Luo] Shang's merit in chastising [Li] Te], and added to him Cavalier in Regular Attendance, Commander-in-Chief of the two provinces, and advanced his fief to Marquis of Yiling. Since his oldest son Yu had taken on Chief Commandant of Attending Chariots, designated his second son Yan as Chief Commandant of Cavalry.
Since Liang# province had been smashed and ruined by Xiong, Jin then used Huangfu Shang as Liang# province. Shang was unable to go to his office. Then they used the Interior Clerk of Shunyang, Zhang Guang of Jiangxia, as Inspector. He was seated at Xincheng. The people of Hanzhong were pressured by Li Feng's robbing and plundering, and ran east to Jing and Mian.)
(Huangfu Shang had been appointed to Liang# province back in 303 by Sima Ai, and was killed fighting Sima Yong. So this part of the entry is either erroneous or misplaced.)
(JS057: [The Inspector of Jing province, Liu] Hong petitioned that [Zhang] Guang had unusual achievements. He moved to General of Talented Officials and Inspector of Liang# province. … Guang did not manage to go to the province, and halted in Weixing. He therefore joined with the various commandery wardens to together plan to advance and take it. [Zhang] Yan recited a speech, saying:
Hanzhong is desolate and defeated, quashed by the nearby great thieves. The affair of overcoming them again, must wait for a gallant hero.
[Du] Zhengchong [HYGZ's Du Mengzhi] said:
Zhang Yan accepted the thieves' gold and silver. He did not timely advance to chastise, he impeded the troops and delayed against the robbers. What caused the loss of Hanzhong was in fact Yan's crimes.
Guang hence let out his anger, he berated Yan, ordered him out, beheaded him and had [the body] make the rounds. He soothed and consoled the desolate and broken, the hundred families happily submitted. Guang hence came back to garrison Hanzhong.)
(Note that HYGZ08 dates Zhang Guang occupation of Hanzhong to 311, but it seemed more fitting to conclude Zhang Yan Du Mengzhi/Zhengchong's story here. And who can say when this particular meeting actually took place.)
Tumblr media
(Zhang Gui)
Soon after Wang Mi robbed Luoyang. Zhang Gui dispatched Beigong Chun, Zhang Zuan, Ma Fang, Yin Jun, and others to lead the provincial army to strike and rout him. They also defeated Liu Cong in Hedong. At the Imperial City they sang about it, saying:
Liang province's great horses, travel across Under Heaven. Liang province's owls on high, bandits and thieves melt away. Owls on high flying freely, the terror kills people.
The Emperor was joyful about his loyalty, and advanced his fief to Duke of Xiping commandery. He did not accept.
(Murong Hui)
Beginning of Yongjia [c. 307 – 308], Hui declared himself Great Shanyu of the Xianbei.
