What Did You Eat Yesterday? 2 Ep 12 (Finale) Stray Thoughts

Last week, Kenji finale met Kayoko and Tominaga-san, and it was everything I ever hoped it would be. Kenji shared the story of how they met, and also learned from Kayoko that Shiro is always talking about him to them. We also watched Kohinata play tennis with Wataru, and then cook pancakes with Shiro.

I'm glad Shiro's mom drew attention to the towel Kenji gave her. It's a nice callback and a reminder that she's trying.

Oh, they were visiting nursing homes. Don't you hurt me in the finale, WDYEY.

You know, I hadn't thought about Shiro getting old and still having to care for his parents.

Poor Shiro. I am also not good at giving gifts.

I really hope Shiro makes a cute bento before the end of this episode.

Oh, I cried when Shiro told them about Baby Goro.

They want to put Kenji in their will!!

Shiro, please tell Kenji that you love him and want to spend the rest of your life with him!

I like that the show brought up through Kenji how adoption sucks for gay couples who want to be married.

I hope that this is a super normal bento and not overly cute just to troll Shiro.

I wondered if they would move Shiro's desk, and I like that they got him a new chair.

I'm going to make this bento.

Oh, Kenji. Thank you for always understanding this man and saying the things that need to be said.

Well, that was beautiful.

Final Verdict: 10, Highly Recommended. There is nothing else like this show. I have watched or attempted over 300 shows in BL and this is the only one about a long-term committed older gay couple. I loved how morbid this entire season felt even when all the fun and silly moments. Shiro and Kenji are getting older, and so are the people in their lives. There are new opportunities and challenges to face, and I love how so much of this season wraps around how steadfast the support around them is, and also how they are it for each other. I sincerely hope that Japan passes gay marriage while Nishijima and Uchino are still active because we all deserve to see Shiro and Kenji get married. Please watch this show. If you read me regularly, you have seen enough shows about men getting together. You deserve to see them stay together and choose each other over and over again.

On the institutional critique embedded in the CFGNY components of Refashioning: CFGNY and Wataru Tominaga, Whitney Mallett writes:

Founded in 1907 (following Japan’s victory in the Russo-Japanese war), American businessmen were motivated to develop trade relations with Japan, and by proxy the larger Asian continent. John D. Rockefeller III was the president from 1952 to 1977. I feel like knowing this context made Saturday’s performance more interesting for me — it was a jubilant celebration of community, but also threaded through with alienation and (mis)translation in the garments themselves, and then the runway show was juxtaposed with CFGNY’s artworks, on view in the other room, that underline language like “Oriental” and “penetrate into the real interior” in literature from the Japan Society archive. (Before seeing their installation I’d assumed the Japan Society, which is in Midtown East, not far from the United Nations Headquarters and multiple foreign consulates, was funded by the Japanese government to promote the nation’s arts and culture.) The ways that CFGNY negotiates the history of the Japan Society is layered, and I feel like one of the real successes of their project is offering multiple entry points. But also the way complications get flattened in how it’s been written about (I think only Danielle Wu’s review for Artforum really engaged with the history of the Japan Society) is kind of ironic — a display of what CFGNY has been all along interrogating. How is “vaguely Asian” consumed?

What Did You Eat Yesterday? 2 Ep 11 Stray Thoughts

Last week, Shiro got to meet Kenji's family! He decided to take them to the restaurant Oo-sensei took him to when he first started working with her, and it was a huge hit. Kenji's mom wanted to meet Shiro because he was worried about what could happen to Kenji and wanted to let Shiro know that she sees him as a part of their family. It was beautiful, and I'm so glad we still have this show.

We're finally seeing Kohinata play tennis, and he's good! Too bad neither Wataru nor Shiro can appreciate his skill, but I do! Excellent serves!

These crumb crushers! Wataru stay pretending like he doesn't love Shiro's food, and now Kohinata has injured his teammate!

I hope Kohinata is satisfied with the little that Wataru played.

Here this mean twink goes making fun of Shiro again.

The intense energy between Shiro and Kohinata gets to me sometimes, and I almost want them to try.

I kinda like that Wataru knows a little bit about Shiro's mean boyfriends, and also noticed that Shiro is actually extremely accommodating.

These pancakes look good.

I really hope Kayoko gets to meet Kenji properly, but I love her fangirling too hard and running back home.

I love how excited and nervous the Tominaga family are about this.

Of course he wanted to know how Kenji and Shiro met. I'm glad Kayoko has Shiro distracted.

So proud of Shiro for getting some food and help for making tempura!

Thank you, Tominaga-san, for letting Kenji know how much Shiro fawns over him.

Holy shit this spread looks delicious.

I cannot believe that Shiro didn't introduce them to Kenji for five years! Happy that he's been with Kenji for eight now.

KAYOKO! You're gonna make Kenji cry if you tell him how much Shiro talks about him and thinks about him! This is so lovely. Kenji needed to know that Shiro is such a simp.

Wataru is so valid for being upset that he didn't get to meet the Tominaga family, too.

That's right, Kenji! Remind Shiro that he wanted their lives to be private!

This was a great penultimate episode. We got to check in with the closest side characters and see how comfortable the dynamic has become for everyone. Kenji finally met Kayoko. This was excellent. I will miss everyone as soon as this ends next week, but I'm so thankful that we got this.
