MDZS but Jiang Cheng embraces his life calling of nosey, bratty little sibling and absolutely will not leave Wei Wuxian alone post-burial mounds. He has no patience for WWX's emo era and no respect for his 'mysterious air' or 'menacing vibes'. 🙄
WWX's reputation is saved by the fact that he spends half his time getting publicly outed as a overenthusiastic nerd and the other half his time desperately stopping his angry chaos gremlin brother from passive-aggressively starting another war.
The cultivation world is forced to accept that WWX saved the Wen remnants because they find out via JC loudly announcing that he is an uncle now, he will be the best uncle to ever uncle, as so help him god if anyone touches that kid he will shove zidian so far up their-
WWX tries to exile himself from the sect and JC stops listening immediately because how is WWX going to help him rebuilt the Jiang sect if he's not there? idiot.
Que:
WWX : you still want me there even though i'm the big bad yiling laozu?
JC: My guy, I have seen you cry in fear because of a puppy and squeal like a pre-teen girl over LWJ not-smiling at you. You're not a big, bad anything except a big, bad idiot. Besides, I'm basically your only friend rn you have to hang out with me.
Anyway JC bullies WWX with love and the world is a better place for it.

time for some actual blogging bc why not
So anyway, I read that gay Chinese zombie book. I have not read an actual book since forever and was doomed, when originally writing this, to wait out the arrival of the rest of the series that I've promptly ordered, and you know what? Let's write a review is what.
For the dry tl;dr we are talking about a strong 8.5 for the first volume, and even that is because of display A, me not being interested in 80% of the school flashback chapter, and display B, the kajillions of similar names that get spiced up with the 2-4 fancy titles of the big shots which get used interchangeably as per demand. Not my demands, but probably good manners' which I'm a stranger to. The short bios of people in the front are a blessing if you want to follow who's who early on; obviously, I didn't savor it as if it was some holy scripture, but for the first chapter you also don't even need it.
Speaking of content, this was not something I expected with my main previous information source being random osmosis via internet. In fact, all I knew is that a main character comes back from the dead, there's other dead people, everyone is wearing pretty much traditional clothes and it's allegedly some good gay shit.
But this wasn't much of a preparation. See, that info was out of context mumbo-jumbo, much like what I'm trying to tap together right now to avoid spoilers. This isn't a fantasyfied period piece or a love story despite one of the main characters working a whole ass pine plantation. (Wonder how long it will take Wei Wuxian till the yuan drops, really. Current gayness rating is 3/10 btw as apart from his body having belonged to an outed twenty-something year old and him playing it up for either giggles or strategy, there's not much else to it.) What I'm trying to say is that man, when I bought the paperback seeing it was 50% off for roughly 5 'Murrican bucks I certainly wasn't expecting a supernatural action detective story with an enjoyable cast and a cliffhanger I wanted to punch a wall over. Color me intrigued. But there's another point I'd like to make.
The point being that the book is funny as hell. Of course this doesn't say much as my sense of humor is pretty niche, but I digress.
Wei Wuxian is a feral gremlin. A very professional and kind-hearted one, but a menace nonetheless. The number of times he's willingly done something irresponsible or stupid followed by regret .5 seconds later is on par with the number typos I've found in my translation. Which isn't a whole whole lot, but it's weird it happened as many times as it did. I'd ask how he's still alive, but, y'know…
The straight man to his antics (lol), Lan Wangji, is usually as interesting as a freshly whitened wall but when he isn't he's amazing. Also has the best scene in the whole volume, hands down. I was reassured there's more of the same to come and I'm filled with giddy anticipation because it had me thriving.
The Lan boys are sweethearts, I hope they'll stick around. They have their own little shenanigans and even if you aren't big on them you'll still look forward to their unexpected appearances once you realize that they are an indicator of shit hitting the whirling device and whipping up a whole entire storm in the very foreseeable future.
Wuxian's uh… nephew? I think it's his nephew. (He's called Jin Ling. I recognize it already, but haven't memorized it yet.) He is very punchable but obviously also a kid and I'm starting to worry for him, man. Either way, he has a demonic hellhound. Name's Fairy. Nuff said.
Then this new Xiao dude is fascinating me for a number of reasons, but even if he wasn't he had the funniest line in the book about 5 pages before things became wild and I was slapped across space-time and jail bars on the face with a to be continued.
The fact that this is a longer story that allows you to dwell on and theorize about stuff is also something I greatly appreciate as a One Piece and Homestuck fan. Theory crafting for an ongoing series is half of the fun, really!! (Ok, it's not ongoing, but I'm forced to treat it as such.) How will we get rid of Wen Ning's shackles? What even is he like when conscious? How long will it take for people other than Wei Wuxian's contemporaries to realize who he is? Will he drop the act himself seeing it's only a question of time until the info spreads? How close is Jin Ling to realizing that his uncle was right? Will he turn on Wuxian entirely or is he invested enough to stick around? Will he turn out to be a respectable cultivator later or be sacrificed for an especially tragic plot twist? What about Wei Wuxian's chances of survival in his current position? For that matter, will all the Lan boys live till the very end? Was the blind man pulling the strings all along or was he tricked into the murder and turned to the forbidden arts in desperation?? Are we fighting for our very lives or merely being tested right now?! Either way, the overpowered zombie talisman is nearby, the plot thickens!!!
So much to think about, I love it!
And although the whys and hows of the logistics are a total question mark, since about halfway through the volume, I have been about 80% convinced of who the unalive person we're on a quest to reassemble is. It's low-key worrying for a number of reasons, but whatever. But this is just a theory. A literary theory.
The next volumes can't arrive soon enough, man. (Before I posted this, they already did. Brb I need to rehydrate.)

Lingering Questions
I got some questions! I didn’t want to interrupt the flow of the episode posts so they’re all here now! Sorry! First, the ones I got multiple versions of:
Will you make another blog to rate Wei Wuxian/Jiang Cheng/Jin Guangyao/Wen Ning etc. and how gremlin/angry/snakey/baby etc. they are? If you don’t, can I do that instead?
A lot of people have asked me if I have plans to Do This To Myself Again and make another rating blog. I don’t have any immediate plans! I definitely need a little break after this surprisingly time-intensive undertaking! Maybe watching the show seven times in a row was, in fact, too many times... (psych i’m gonna watch it again soon nobody can stop me)
if you’d like to do one yourself for another character and another trait/emotion/whatever, have at it! Please do message me about your endeavour if this blog inspired you, I’d love to check it out!
Do you have another blog and can I follow it?
I don’t really post much, but if you’re interested you can follow me on my non-fandom blog here. If I ever decide to do another blog like this one, I’ll post about it there first!
Tumblr media
That’s a great question, and I don’t have a clear answer for you. I think that, for all characters, their impact on his ability to feel peace is pretty variable depending on where he was both in terms of the plot and his relationship to them. I think I might go into this in more detail on my other blog later. But for now, here are the people who affected him the most just generally:
Wei Wuxian, as you noted, undoubtedly increases and decreases his peacefulness the most dramatically. He often bumped Lan Wangji up at least a full point, all other things in the scene being equal. However, he also sent him the lowest he could go. It really depended on how many Evil Vibes Wei Wuxian was putting out and whether he’d murdered anyone they knew recently. Post-return I gave everything an unspoken (but I think we can all agree very necessary) Wei Wuxian Is Alive Bonus of +0.5 points.
Jiang Cheng always had no impact on him until after the time skip at which time his presence was always a negative, and sometimes quite strongly so, depending on how Menacing he was being to Wei Wuxian at the time. Usually at least a full -1, sometimes -2.
Su She was universally a negative hit to Lan Wangji’s peacefulness post-betrayal, because he sucks so bad lol. At least a -1 at all times after the betrayal.
The Lans didn’t get specific bonuses or decrements. Lan Sizhui almost always improved his peacefulness just generally, particularly as a baby. Lan Wangji is the Softest Dad and it’s too pure, honestly. The rest of the Lan family usually had a pretty minor effect, except for whenever Lan Xichen was aggressively shipping him with Wei Wuxian, and whenever Lan Qiren tried to cultivate the gay away.
Tumblr media
I answered this in the tags of a post, but I know that the tags may be missed sometimes, so for anybody who missed the tags: the answer is Rakuten Viki! They allegedly have the best English subtitles, though they do take the rather amusing step of literally translating peoples’ titles (see: Brilliance Overgrowth Lord. It would have taken so much less effort to call him Zewu-jun, but here we are. Here we are living in a Brilliance Overgrowth World).

the 3rd question in each of the mdzs ask sections !
!!!!! :D Thank you, I’m delighted.
Get to know me: MDZS Edition
General: 3. Manhua, donghua, novel, live-action, or audio drama?  Tbh all of these have their strengths!! I actually went donghua -> cql -> manhua  -> novel (and haven’t listened to the audio drama yet), but I probably have to go novel? I ADORE the music in the donghua and cql, and the effects in the donghua are AMAZING, but for characterizations/timelines/events, I have to stick to the novel.
Ships: 3. Other ships you like? Ignoring the answers for OTP and OT3 (wangxian and 3zun haha), I should drop a casual mention for liking sangcheng? I like them being narrative foils, i like that they were friends back in Gusu Lan school, and I like the idea of someone who wouldn’t put up with JC giving them shit hahaha, I just think they have a fun, cute dynamic.
Characters: 3. Favorite character & why? This is like asking me to choose a favorite child, it’s unfair and the answer changes daily. I love Lan Xichen probably bc I relate far too closely to him, and I’m probably still a little in denial about how much I adore Jin Guangyao for Reasons, but.......... As a character, I think I gotta go with Wei Wuxian. He’s......... he’s a perfect little gremlin boy. He’s sad and kind and troubled and clever and he’s a menace and he’s an idiot. I had so many minutes of RAGE while reading bc he’s so OBLIVIOUS to his own feelings and it drives me up the wall, but god, this beautiful dumbass boy who forgets what a consequences is seconds after experiencing one makes me laugh so much, I love him.
Story: 3. You can bring one character back to life, but you must pick someone else to die in their place. Would you do it? How would this affect the story? This is tough just because I don’t know what counts as “dying in their place.” xD Does this apply post-canon? Or can in be applied DURING canon? Can I kill a  character who dies, but kill them EARLIER to take the place of a character living? I HAVE QUESTIONS
Assuming it’s all post-canon? I’d probably bring back Jiang Yanli, bc of all of the characters, she deserves it the most tbh. In her place, Sect Leader Yao can die bc FUCK that dude. Assuming it’s DURING CANON, I’d save Jin Zixuan (bc the repercussions of this would save Yanli) and sacrifice nasty ass Jin Guangshan (bc the repercussions of THAT could very well save the Wens, wwx, and perhaps even NMJ? hmu for my theories on THAT rofl)
Fic: 3. Favorite tropes & which characters?  Tbh, these apply to any ships I like, tho so far, I’ve only bothered to read/write wangxian and various 3zun/xiyao fic.
G-rated: Mutual pining and all the glory that goes with it! Bedsharing! Huddling for warmth! Any sort of forced closeness while two (or more) idiots are deeply in love and can’t admit it!!!!!
E-rated: Anything that might fit in the Fuck or Die category. Heats/Sex pollen/etc. Anything where the characters are so DESPERATELY HORNY and they MUST FUCK RIGHT THIS INSTANT usually leading to CONFESSIONS, awwwwwww yissssssssssss
