"Mom," Steve whispered in the inky blackness of his parents' room. "Mom, there's something under my bed."

Patricia Harrington turned over. "Steven, go back to sleep," she murmured.

"I can't." Steve said. "There's a monster."

"No such thing." his mom said, angrier, more awake. "Go to bed now, and if I catch you out of bed again you can forget going to Tommy's this weekend."

Steve nodded and padded back down the hall, pausing at his door then taking a running jump into bed.

The room was silent.

"I know you're here." Steve whispered, making sure all his limbs were tucked safely away under the covers. "You don't scare me."

A couple minutes of quiet, then Steve heard a scraping sound come from under his bed. He squeaked and pulled his blankets up to his nose.

A horrible, raspy laugh came from below him. "I do scare you!" said a voice. "You lied!"

"No-no you don't!" Steve said boldly. He clutched his blanket tighter, then said, "I can't be scared of something I can't see! That's just dumb."

Something dark began to slither across the floor out of the corner of Steve's eye. Oh, I'm gonna regret that, he thought.

The thing began to pull itself up, looming over Steve. It cracked a smile, and sharp white teeth gleamed in the light from his closet.

Steve screamed.

"Shut up!" his dad shouted angrily from downstairs, and Steve clapped a hand over his mouth, eyes flicking between the shadow and the door like he wasn't sure which monster to be more afraid of.

The monster crept toward him, and Steve dug his fingernails into his face, scooting away from the horror. He whimpered, not daring to close his eyes.

Then the monster began to shrink.

It shriveled away, changing color and backing up, until a little boy, about Steve's age, stood in front of him. He had long curly hair and was dressed in a t-shirt that was way too big on him. When he opened his eyes, Steve flinched, because the whites of his eyes simply...weren't there. His eyes were an onyx black.

"Hi," the boy said. "I'm Eddie."

Steve was too stunned to speak, but he did uncover his mouth.

"I'm the monster under your bed!" Eddie said. "I'm supposed to scare you, but, um-" he risked a quick look at the door "-I don't think you need my help for that."

"Why are you supposed to scare me?" Steve asked.

Eddie shrugged. "Dunno. Every kid's got one. It's just how it works. I was made to be your monster, forever!" He sat down on the edge Steve's bed, bumping Steve's shoulder against his. "Weird to be on this side of the bed. No dust bunnies or anything."

Steve giggled, forgetting his fear. "You're fun!"

Eddie grinned at him. "Thank you! None of the other monsters think my jokes are funny."

"So you have to scare me?" Steve asked. "But you're not scary. Not after talking to me."

Eddie paused. "Oh, right. I'm not supposed to talk to you. Um..."

"What if we just say you're scaring me?" Steve asked. "I'll pretend I'm really scared of the monster under my bed, and you pretend you scare me every single night. But really we're hanging out instead of scaring!"

"Ooh, I like that idea!" Eddie struck a dramatic pose. "I'll be the monster under your bed, but I'll be ready to protect you if you need it too!"

Steve stuck out his hand like he saw his dad do for business deals. "Deal?"

Eddie shook it. "Deal."

Steve sprinted through the forest, the kids hot on his heels. "There!" he shouted. "Everyone in!"

The kids bolted to the abandoned cabin, and Steve slammed the door shut. "Is there a bed in here?" he called. "A couch? A fridge?"

"Bed's in here!" Will yelled, and Steve followed his voice to the cluttered bedroom, complete with partially-caved-in bedframe. He gingerly took a seat on the mattress, cringing when it crackled. He did not need to know what was on this.

"Eddie?" he called, tapping on the flaky painted wood.

The shitheads crowded in, and Mike murmured. "What the fuck is he doing?"

Steve ignored him. "Eddie, come on, I need your help."

Something tall, dark, and lanky slid out from under the bed, and all the kids jumped back in fright, raising their various weapons. Steve leapt to get in front of them, raising his hands as a shield. "Chill! Calm down, this is Eddie!"

Eddie shrank into his human form, draping himself over Steve. "You had to summon me to the nastiest bed in Indiana? Really, Steve?"

Steve shrugged. "This was the closest one. We need your help, Eds."

"We?" He focused on the Party. "Well, these must be the infamous buttheads." Eddie slid into the shadows and reappeared behind the Party, inspecting them. "Dustin, Mike, Lucas, Will, El, Max, right?" he said, pointing at each one as he said their names.

"What the fuck are you?" Dustin asked.

Suddenly Eddie was under Steve's arm, wrapping a hand around his waist. "I'm Steve's monster under the bed." he said. "I'm just... friendlier with Steve than most of the monsters I work with."

Steve rolled his eyes. "You can tell him you're my boyfriend, they know I'm bi." He kissed Eddie on the cheek.

The kids all broke into gasps, except for Max, who fake gagged. "Don't be gross!" she yelled. "Demogorgon outside, remember?"

"Ah, right." Steve said. "Eds, can you-"

"On it." Eddie kissed Steve. "I'll be back."

The kids watched Eddie melt into shadows, then wheeled on Steve. "Steven Don't-Know-Your-Middle-Name Harrington," Dustin said. "You have a lot of explaining to do."

edit: i did not expect this response to the short little thing that took me 30 mins max at 2am!! i’m planning on rewriting it and turning it into a full length fic, so i’ll come back and edit this with the link!

im not sure if i identify with any characters? it’s not really something that matters to me!!

when i was younger, i tended to morph my personality into those of my favorite characters as i was discovering who i was, but i don’t do that any more.

being a people pleaser i can relate to blaine, but i wouldn’t say that we are alike. aside from you know. a general love for kurt puppet.

F: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with your fics?

treading water and klueless both have associated playlists!! i get nervous sharing music related to my writing because i’m not listening to anything incredibly unique and it can make everything feel more personal, but i listen to music as i write, and those two playlists either helped inspire me or, for klueless, get me in the headspace to write.

M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?

ive def had weird aus in the past but my memory is so bad ..i dont remember what they could have been from previous fandoms.

weirdest scenario is maybe klaine!femboy hooters ?? lol very unlikely to ever get written bc there is No Plot really its just vibes….

the premise was essentially that sebastian was blaines ex and dragged him there as a joke/to show off his new bf, and kurt was blaine’s waiter. and like, femboy!hooters isn’t blaines thing but he keeps coming back because kurts just pretty and hes a good listener. and kurt likes that blaine isnt grossly hitting on him 24/7…. (its essentially an excuse to imagine kurt in glittery eyeshadow….lmao….)

Ive written 200 fics. It's really hard to pick a favorite lmao so I'm just gonna go through my recent ones for like, ones I really like. Moonsickness I had fun(?) Writing. It was very cathartic.

M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?

Ive had a lot of weird aus and crack Aus. Weirdest was probably this one time i went about making a whole like 4 post long dabitwice au where Jin was a sexy fireman and Dabi was a random arsonist who kept setting fires and trapping himself in burning buildings to try to get Jins attention so he'd rescue him. Sadly, no it did not become a fic :((

i'm only gonna do snowbaz, and also these are just in order of how recent they are bc i dont know how to rank them lol

1. Something's Gotta Give Now (T), 7k

this is my most recent snowbaz fic and i really really liked writing it. it's an au, and i don't really want to give too much away because part of what i like about this fic is the way the backstory unravels. but the gist is: baz plays a sexy, angsty vampire on a popular tv show, and simon is very bitter and very funny about it.

i did this after not writing snowbaz for a while, so i feel like i was able to return to the characters with fresh eyes and some broken bad habits. the third person is nice too -- i definitely write more cleanly in third. it's definitely not crack (which was my original intention lmfao, it's technically my crackfest entry), but im not really mad about it. i gave up on my ability to not to take it seriously about 500 words in. also, there's a second chapter that it just unhinged shit lmfao.

2. The Places We Build (T), 4k

this fic plays with the idea of: what if simon and baz decided in their first year at watford that they didn't want to hate each other? what if everything was the same, except nothing was the same, because they were friends? i like it because i feel like it has a strong heartbeat. i love to see how much of a world i can create in the least amount of words, and there's a looooot of history packed into these 4k words. very tender. very cuddly :)

3. love means slowly using losing your mind (E), 8k

this one was so fun to write. another au -- baz is a wedding planner, simon is penny/sheps best man (yes, both of them). it's loosely based on THAT scene from the movie 27 Dresses (iykyk) but it stands on its own. i like how i leaned into the setting here -- it feels like a very accessible world to me, like you could close your eyes and see the pub. and also i really just like to put my blorbos in a situation where they get drunk and have fun hahaha. as always, shit gets kind of real and snowbaz are their usual intense selves. also there's awkward car sex, which was hilarious to write.

4. Jump Up, Chosen One! (T), 8k

dude. what the FUCK was i on here..... this is perhaps the most plot-driven thing i've ever written, while also being one of the WEIRDEST things ive ever written. the premise is: simon goes off, trapping him, niall, dev, and baz in a Super Mario Bros game. and like. it's silly, yeah. but when i read back through im always like -- oh, ok, there's a lot of heart in this! good job rory! more reasons to love: lots of fun niall & dev screen time, simon solving problems thru the power of Being Determined, a tender moment that i interrupt several times by reminding you that simon and baz do indeed look like mario characters, penny solving problems thru the power of Being Clever, and a surprise tonal shift at the end lmfao. idk man. there's a lot going on here and i think it's p sweet.

5. In black ink my love may still shine bright (M), 5k

even though i hate that i used a fuckin long ass shakespeare quote as a title (lmao. like it fits and i love that sonnet but still. tacky !), this fic is great. @starwarned and i talk a lot about the power of The Slutty M-Rated Fic, and this is my best work in that regard. post-awtwb, date night -- they get ice cream and go to a bar and... shenanigans ensue. it's sweet and happy and nothing bad happens. NICE. the e-rated sequel is the first smut i ever wrote. i was so nervous about it. look at me now.... our resident blood slut LMAO.

honorable mentions, because im a dirty cheater. these probably belong in top 5 but ive been talking about them already recently so i didnt want to be repetitive.

closer to the sun (E), 6k: simpard taken seriously. investigations and road trips and finding purpose and... dragon-fucking.

but the main one is probably just,, davey taking care of jack? bc jack always has so much stress on his shoulders, and every so often he needs the opportunity to just,, have someone take the stress away, however that may be.

i also have a soft spot for jack having a brother! ive written fics with jack and Spot as brothers, jack and crutchie as brothers, or jack and race as brothers- no matter who it is, i just. love sibling dynamics

also, this is a more general thing, but: petnames! i love it when fics lay the petname aspect on heavy.

not that it's necessarily "weird", but maybe the Tangled au?

i also had an old au that involved Javid and Newsbians- basically, Kath and Sarah were dating, and Sarah invited Kath on a trip that she and David were taking (though David was kind of unwilling). to prevent David from being a third wheel, Sarah told Katherine to invite Jack. it was just gonna be Newsbians in love and Javid falling for each other in the middle of Panama City Beach! again, not really "weird", but definitely rom-com-ish

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

hmm well, in all of the multi-chapter stories ive began to plan out (key word: began. ive yet to finish any of them and have multiple abandoned novel ideas), i usually start with the characters. the main reason for this is because the first time i tried to start a multi-chapter story, i just went straight into writing it without any idea about what the characters or the plot was going to be like. needless to say, it died off pretty quick.

so, yeah, i usually try to form the characters and their backgrounds before moving on to the plot, at least, for multi-chapter stories. for oneshots, i just begin with the plot since i usually already have the characters as a basis

P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)

oh dear. i kinda mentioned this above, but i try to plan out the plot before writing multi-chapter stories, but for oneshots, i do the opposite. in fact, the longest story ive ever written and finished was 10K words of unplanned madness, but it still turned out pretty okay. so, usually, i just go in, feet first, and start writing. this results in me gettings stuck on the plot for fics a lot though ;-;

Q: Do you have any discarded scenes/storylines/projects?

oh my gooooooooosh yes!!! so!! frickin!! many!! i have halted oneshots, ideas, multi-chapter fanfics, original stories, original novels…. gah, so many. im a mess

23. Single or multi POV, and why?

I prefer one core POV most of the time! I like to have a character that has enough time and perspective for the reader to get behind, and also it generally establishes the view of the world and the character in that world nicely the more they have their thoughts bared to the reader. Also, sometimes I dont want readers to be able to know thoughts going thru other chars heads, so in these cases, I stick more to one POV! (like in Currents for example, it’s p much ALL in Yugi’s POV) Multiple POVs does mean its harder to keep stuff secret for other characters I find sometimes, so I don’t do it too often. That said I’ve worked with two POVs back and forth sometimes, and I find that can give the right amount of info for both of them too! So like some fics I have Atem and Yugi swap POVs, especially if they’re in different areas (biggest example is with The Living Daylights, I did this a lot in the second half of the fic), or they clearly have different bias/opinions on events happening, and portraying both of them is important (I do this with vamp AU a lot, because Yugi has Vampire Things only he can show through his thoughts, and Atem is super bias so his POV doesn’t work in the right tone, and also done a bit more recently in naga AU because nagas and location and //waves arms shit is happening in that fic lmao)

50. Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had.

My GOD don’t ask me this I get RLY WEIRD AU IDEAS LMAO. Okay I guess I’ll have to go with my rly strange anthro fic idea I had once,,,,,,,,

Okay so for context, I’ve always wanted to write an Ancient Egyptian AU, but the time + research to get one to sit comfortably between interesting and accurate is something that,,,,, well, u see im a medieval time period kid, I was never much into Ancient Egypt growing up, so my knowledge of it is basic (except for Deir El Medina I can tell u about that cause school assignment lmao). That’s not really an excuse so much as I’m really lazy sometimes okay and I don’t feel confident enough to find that balance enough to write a full length AE AU xD

SO ANYWAYS this means I kind of have a fewwwww tiny like snippets ive written up before, or ideas I’ve chased for like between 4-8K before I grew bored and let them die off. And one of them was,,,,,, Ancient Egypt AU but everyone is a furry/anthro LMAO. Not exactly the kinda thing I parade around, I’ve shown maybe like three friends before phft. But anyways, it was like this concept where Atem was a lion and the pharaoh, and Yugi was a spotted cat, which was considered an endangered species and was super ancient and v powerful (I dunno lmao). Yugi ends up at the palace one day cause the ppl who were supposed to be looking after him/ giving him shelter were kind of assholes, and he got beat up over something I never got around to explaining/ coming up with lmao. So he goes under the pharaohs protection because of course he’s a RLY RARE species, but Yugi rly hates been treated like a petal because of it, and of course Atem is very much wanting him to like ‘stay in the palace stay safe’ kinda shit and Yugi rebels and sets about annoying the shit out of Atem and there’s  like a bunch of witting dialogue and conversations I wrote up for it but past that ittttt never really had a plot. I think it was going to be some mystery thing, with some underground plot probably involving thief cat king Bakura showing up I guess, but yeah,,,,,, never when further than that. But I’d say thats one of my more weirder plots xD
