ronance, immortal!Nancy, werewolf!Robin part 2
hmm thinking about how well a story about the tragedy of immortality would fit Nancy Wheeler...
There's something about losing someone you love so young that locks part of you in time to begin with, but to have repeated death and tragedy seemingly flock to your little pocket of the universe time after time? How does a girl even begin to escape that?
Nancy Wheeler, the teller of stories, doesn't get to die, is cursed to keep living surrounded by violence in canon, sure, but what if she's actually cursed? What if she were destined to outlive everyone she loves? What if the day she decided to take on the responsibility of sharing Barb's story and getting some meager modicum of justice for her memory was also the day Nancy shackled herself to that life, her life, forever?
What if Nancy lives to see the friends she made as a teenager die, her family, her little brother aging long past her into an old man while Nancy remains young and unchanging?
What if she lives for a hundred years and then two? What if by the time 1986 rolls around she's learned how to isolate herself, learned how to move through the shadows and tell the stories that need telling without ever letting the subjects get too close to her?
(It's a difficult thing, to tell a story when you're not a participant, but it's the only way to protect her heart and it's the only way to make sure that when people die it doesn't ache the way the rest of them do.)
It's 1986 and she lives in the woods on the outskirts of a small town buzzing with supernatural energy. It's the kind of thing that dragged Nancy into this trap to begin with, the thing which killed Barb and stole all the parts of humanity Nancy wanted while leaving her with guilt and grief.
It's 1986 and Hawkins, Indiana is buzzing, but when Nancy starts to discover just how teeming with the other this area she's settled in for the time being is, her usual instinct to run gets overruled by something stronger.
She has a nice smile, the girl with the shaggy hair and scuffed-up shoes.
She's persistent to an annoying degree and has a nose for the other if the fact that she found Nancy at all means anything.
She's rambunctious and unapologetic and knows things that someone who looks as old as she looks shouldn't know. Things that Nancy knows, only because she's been around long enough to learn.
But, I'm not like you, Nancy tells her all the same, because what this girl has is a gift and a built-in community and what Nancy has is the curse of isolation.
What Nancy has is herself, first and foremost, but still she doesn't leave and doesn't waver.
Robin, she says her name is. You're not like me, sure, but you're closer to me than them.
Hawkins, Indiana is buzzing with energy, teeming with residents who aren't quite human, but know how to play the part. Robin tells her about it, perched on the porch swing outside Nancy's kitchen window and going on and on about kids with psychic abilities and her metalhead pal who drinks human blood; she tells Nancy about witches and warlocks and shapeshifters alike and--
Werewolves.
Nancy's more like that than she is anything else. Nancy tries to pull away time and again, just as she has for centuries, but Robin reminds her I've got all the time in the world, you know, with a grin and a skip down the steps back out into the brush, and it feels big.
Bigger than the empty space Nancy has surrounded herself with all these years.
Bigger even than Nancy's own unbleeding heart.
Immortality has been Nancy's curse. She's loved so much in her overextended life because she can't help but to do just that when people are-- they're just so lovable.
And she's hated herself for it. She's reprimanded herself and she's tried to find solutions and she's wished for her time to unfreeze too many times to count, but.
The first time that Nancy tracks down Robin instead of the other way around is also the first time that she really acknowledges that time isn't frozen, just because she's been treating it that way.
Time keeps moving and people come and go and that would have been the case had her mortality remained intact, because it hurts, these things. The repercussions of the good.
She finds Robin sometime at the beginning of 1987, sitting on a hand-built fence surrounding a cabin not unlike Nancy's own, only bigger, filled to the brim with life and people.
Robin sips from a glass bottle of Coke, smirking around it knowingly as Nancy comes to a stop at the edge of the clearing, as if she'd known this would happen, as if she'd seen it happen before and knew she would again.
Nancy swallows thickly around the sounds of laughter beyond the open windows to the cabin, curtains billowing in a summer breeze and allowing glimpses of people who have no inclination to hide, and she hurts.
She hurts because to live is to hurt, and she aches, because the part of her which froze the day Barb died is humming at the prospect of being set free once more.
Ready? Robin asks her, hopping down to the other side of the fence and holding out a hand as if to help Nancy climb over it.
She's not like them, these people with superpowers and miraculous talents, but they're a little bit like her.
Nancy steps forward.
Takes the offered hand, warm and dry and with a life line digging through her palm which lines up to Nancy's near-perfectly.
Introduce me? Nancy asks.
With the lift of Robin's grin, it's easy to climb the fence.

Ideas for a Black Phone/Magic School AU
Tumblr media
Finney and Gwen are Half-Blooded Mages (Human Father/Witch Mother)
Robin is a Werewolf.
Vance is a Vampire.
Bruce is a Wizard
Griffin is a Changeling.
Billy is a Frankenstein Creature.
Max is a professor of Magic History 101 at N’Evermore.
The Grabber is a Dark Wizard that possesses Blood Magic, the most forbidden form of magic.
For the story, students of N’Evermore are being attacked in the halls of school by a mysterious figure known as The Grabber, who drains his victims of their magical essences. (Either to cast a powerful spell or to undo a curse placed on him for tampering with Blood Magic)
The drainage spell doesn’t kill the kids here, but it does leave them in a comatose-like state barely clinging to life.
With more kids being attacked, magical siblings Finney and Gwen team up with other students to stop The Grabber once and for all.
Headcanons:
Roommates: Finney & Robin. Gwen & Suzie. Billy & Griffin. Vance & Bruce.
Gwens’ magic is considered light while Finneys magic is in a gray area (between light & dark)
Gwen has healing abilities, can link to other people through dreams, and can conjure visions. Finney can cast spells, but above all, he has the ability to connect with spirits of the dead.
Because of her healing abilities, Gwen sometimes volunteers around the Hospital Wing of the school. (That’s how she became connected to the Grabbers victims later on in the story)
Bruce becomes a magical tutor for Finney, who struggles with his powers in the story.
Before attending the school, Bruce inherited his fathers old staff. He wears it around his neck, shrunken size.
Vance became a vampire after his mother survived an attack while pregnant with him. This made him being a vampire… let’s say, a sore subject.
His parents basically left Vance on his own to figure out his powers. Going to N’Evermore was an escape for Vance.
Amongst his powers, Vance can connect with nearby bats to conjure an army.
Every full moon night, Robin sneaks out of the school to run through the nearby woods. It’s his favorite thing in the world because it makes him feel connected with his Dad.
Robin had been raised by his Uncle after his Dad was killed by Monster Hunters(sacrificing himself to save either a friend or young Robins life)
In this AU, Griffin has elemental/nature kind of magic.
Griffin has trouble fitting in with his peers, after spending his life being raised in a mythical forest by Faes.
Billy was actually born human and was turned into the creature he is today. He woke up one day, in the schools hospital wing, only to discover his body was covered in stitches, he had super strength and electrical powers.
The incident left his mind a jumbling mess, and he can’t remember what happened to him, or his life before. The school is trying to help him with his trauma and to find out who he is.
Harper is his Anxiety Dog, the school let’s Billy take her everywhere.
Magic teacher, Max used to be a student at N’Evermore with his older brother; Albert. They both loved it there, especially the nights when they would sneak into the restricted section of the library.

We all have heard about Werewolf!Steve but may I please bring forward Witch!Steve to the conversation:
Alice Howe did not want to talk about her childhood or the family she distanced herself from after marrying Richard Harrington. When asked she would mention finishing school and growing up with old fashioned values, never giving more details and certainly not mentioned the talents her and the women of her family possessed. It was not that she gave up magic all together, of course not it would be foolish to not use all tools at your disposal to keep the life you have made for yourself, but she keeps it around in small ways. Using spells to keep her house tidy and in order, potions she can pass off as home remedies secrets sthat her mother taught her. And if she was being honest, she was relieved to find out that her first born had in fact been a son. She swears that she would have loved the baby either way but she was hoping for a boy. A boy meant her secret could be safe, Magic was rarely passed down to boys (something about dominant and recessive genes) but then Steve grew. When the boy was about three Alice started to notice him imitating her movements as he watched his mother cast wordless spells that moved dishes around the kitchen into the cabinets, evaporating water off the recently washed plates. At first she thought nothing of it, there was little chance that anything would come of it but then when Steve was about five, she realized she was wrong. It would turn out that by some strange twist of fate that Steve was born with the gifts that so many of Howe Family had possessed, evident in little ways like teddy bears and blocks levitating an inch above the ground before falling back down and it is after witnessing that does Alice make the chose to stop using her powers in front of her son. She chooses not to tell him about the power he was born with, thinks if I don’t teach him he won’t learn and the problem will go away and in someways it does. Steve doesn’t learn any true spells and yes, sometimes things will happen when the boy gets emotional but nothing too out of the ordinary. Sometimes there’s a little zip of electricity that feels like a static shock when touches something while too excited, a lamp might flicker slightly when he stubs his toe.
But then Steve turns ten and it’s the first time his parents decide that he’s old enough to be left alone while they attend a conference over a long weekend. The boy doesn’t know why he’s looking around the basement, it just felt like something was calling to him and packed away amongst the holiday decorations, old camping gear, and snowsuits, he finds this old wooden chest. He feels weird looking at it, like if he were to open it would alter the course of his life forever, but there’s a voice in the back of his mind telling him that he should. And so he does. At first glance the contents of the chest seem to be just old Halloween decorations, dusty leather bound books of spells and potions with a small blacken and tarnished metal cauldron, but then Steve opens one of the books and sees in a crooked version of his mother’s neat looping penmanship “Property of One Miss Alice Howe.” He can’t tell you why he starts to read them, maybe it’s to feel closer to the mother that seemed so distant or maybe it was just because they looked cool or maybe some third option, all he would be able to tell you is that it just felt right. Then one day while Steve is home alone during that stretch of time where school has ended but his parents have not returned home from work, he tries one of the spells he read about in his mother’s old school books just to see what would happen. And it is then, sitting on his bed with the door locked shut does Steve learn that his mother has given him more than he could have ever thought. Steve was able to use Magic, like actual magic. Steve was a Witch.
He wants to talk to his mom about it but he wasn’t supposed to find these things and who knows how she would react, so he hides. Hides the leather books on his shelf in the dust jackets of old hardcovers, hides the cauldron with a carefully stacked wall of folded clothes in his closet. He teaches himself in secret, he makes rules for himself. Only reading the books in his room so no one can read over his shoulder, only practicing spells in the house when he’s sure his parents won’t be coming home, and during those stretches of time between business trips he sneaks into the woods, out to skull rock and practices under the cover of the forest at night. Steve never thought that he was smart when it came to school but this made sense, he finally feels like he gets something.
As his skills grow over the years he becomes more sure of himself, more confident, and he starts to bend the rules. Using magic in subtle ways to mess with the other team during sports, making a player on the court stumble so his team gets the ball after an unfair call, makes sure the right fielder when the bases are loaded and it’s the bottom of the ninth, add a small amount of a potion that allows him to breath underwater to his water bottle for swim meets not enough to make a huge difference but just enough to not phase him when he accidentally inhales some of the chlorinated water when his lung capacity fails him. He’s not hurting anyone and the books are useful, especially when it comes to the idea of crafting an image. Potions for hair and skin care, spells that cover your imperfections. So while he bends his rules, he adds to them as well. No magic to cheat on tests, nothing that can change other peoples’ appearances. But sometimes he wonders what would happen if he stopped… if he didn’t use magic to keep his images King Steve, Steve “The Hair” Harrington? Was his charming personality real or just an illusion?
Then he meets Nancy, and Barb goes missing, his parent’s business trips go on longer and longer, the fight with Jonathan, and then the Demogorgan. And so he starts honing in on anything he can find for protection, for healing, for defense and he just wants some normalcy back in his already weird life. So yeah it’s Halloween, he wants to be a dumb kid and go party and have fun. He accidentally makes Nancy spill the red punch on herself and if she would just let him help her he would have been able to get the stain out but he’s stumbling and trying to be discreet about the spell and then “It’s Bullshit, all of it. Bullshit.” And he doesn’t want to break, not there in that bathroom in that house with all those people, it’s to dangerous to risk. So he gets out, he leaves, makes sure Nancy can get home safe but he leaves. Parks his car by the quarry and lets himself break, the man made pool of water rocking with unnaturally violent waves that crash against each other as the boy cries.
And then he’s protecting the kids from the demo dogs, every incantation of protection, defense, and god forbid healing that he’s ever learned flutter at light speed through the back of his thought like a Rolodex attached to a power drill.
And he meets Robin and he feels like she has this beacon about her that he can’t put his finger on but mistakes for a crush. And he tells her while sitting on that men’s bathroom floor, she tells him about Tammy Thompson and later notices a sort of amber glow to her eyes in moonlight as they drive the convertible and just chalks it up to drugs and last parts of his brain still switching from romantic to platonic love. But he notices it when they work the late shift at Family Video and during movie nights till one night he asks about it. And she tells him about being a werewolf and for the first time Steve tells someone that he’s a witch.
And then he meets Eddie, not Eddie “The Freak” Munson but Eddie. And then Eddie dies, and Steve has to get Dustin to leave, to get him safe. It is in the lull of the days after the Battle that Dustin finds out about Steve’s gifts and begs for Steve to find some way to bring Eddie back. And Steve wants to break, not in the way he did on Halloween two years ago but in a different way, a way that he doesn’t know that he can recover from. He can’t promise Dustin anything more than he’ll try. Necromancy is not for the faint of heart but, after everything the nineteen year old has seen, he would assume he’s not included in that category. The young man ventures into the Upside Down to find the fallen party member, no clue of if his plan will even work but he’s going to try and try like hell. He finds the older boy’s body, his eyes welling up with the tears he had refused to shed and he apologizes, for everything, for being an asshole in high school, for leaving him here, for him having to get mixed up in this, for not being there to protect him, and as he lets the tears fall, he promises that he is going fix this, that he will fix this. The ritual is performed, Steve brings a man back to life, and Eddie is the third person to learn Steve’s secret.
Something must have gone wrong with the spell though. Eddie is back and while he is still Eddie, he’s just different now. His senses are sharper, he’s stronger, he’s…. he’s a vampire. Not that Eddie minds, says that it was a sort of consolation prize for, you know, dying. Steve however, does mind. Blames himself for messing up the spell, for turning Eddie into a monster and is sure that Eddie only hangs out with him because of some fucked up power imbalance that comes with bringing someone back to life. But he hasn’t turned Steve away yet, so like a stray that has been fed, he keeps coming back.
The truth is that Steve likes Eddie, likes hanging out with him, likes showing off the stupid little tricks he’s learned to do with his powers, likes how he comes alive onstage with his band, likes that he’s a little too loud when he’s excited and talks with his hands and has issues with personal space. He likes being with Eddie and one night it hits him. They’re hanging out, watching a movie when Steve looks over at Eddie, profile illuminated by the glow of the screen giggling at the way a background actor is apparently trying so hard not to stare at the camera, and he thinks “god I want to kiss him.” The boy freezes, his eyes wide at his own thoughts and as if he can sense the stutter in Steve’s heartbeat, Eddie turns to face him when something in the other boy snaps. Next thing Steve knows he’s kissing Eddie and Eddie is kissing him back and he doesn’t want the moment to end. But the light from the tv goes blue and Steve yawns into Eddie’s mouth which causes the older boy to call it a night, carrying them off to bed. In the morning, Steve wakes up curled into the other boy’s side and smiles softly cuddling closer as he drifts back to sleep.

What was robin’s reaction the first time nancy used ‘Pup’ as a pet name for her?
Did I write something with minor angst just to answer this? Yes...
The first time Nancy calls Robin Pup is when she finds them alone in the woods; a late night that seemed to drag on for miles, Nancy constantly checking her watch, tired but unable to sleep until she new Robin was home safe.
It was a full moon; a beacon burning bright in the night sky, reminding Nancy of the inevitable, the unavoidable ritualistic transformation Robin went through every phase.
Robin assured her that they'd be okay, that they were smarter than the hunters, knew what to look for. There weren't many in Hawkins, but that didn't mean they could be reckless.
But as night bled into midnight and beyond Nancy couldn't wait any longer. She grabbed one of Robin's hoodies that was forgotten at the Wheeler's and grabbed her car keys, to find her significant other.
The moon beamed down a harsh glow. Illuminating the forest, there wasn't much need for a flashlight; but Nancy had one just in case.
When she found Robin; curled up next to a tree, bleeding paw cradled protectively to their chest, soft whimpers and bated breaths. Yellow eyes gleaming wet.
The act of speaking all but choking Nancy as her chest felt like it was being pressed down on by heavy machinery. The cogs in her body stalling as she stumbled to the ground, "Robin?" She asked, voice haunting in her own ears.
Riddled with panic and concern that made it almost unrecognizable, Robin whimpering and curling in on themselves.
Nancy swallowed hard, trying to settle down the buzzing hive that was her nervous system.
"Pup... it's me, it's Nancy," she was hesitant; gently placing her hand to Robin's fur, ready to bull away if they startled.
But they didn't, easing into the touch and easing into Nancy's words, unwinding all at once, lifting their head to meet Nancy's stormy blue eyes.
"It's me," she repeated.
Robin nudged her softly with their head, loosening the protective hold on the injured appendage, as if begging Nancy to tell them it would be okay.
+
Later when they're back at the Wheeler house, Robin showered and changed, sitting on Nancy's bed surrounded by first aid supplies.
Head heavy and groggy from the pain killers, Nancy finishing off bandaging their hand, they speak "I like it when you call me that," it's a half yawn really.
The night weighing heavy on both their shoulders.
Nancy looks up in confusion, a concentrated crease formed right between her brows, "I didn't say anything?" She says, her only focus on tending Robin's injury, after spending an hour on the phone with Max while Robin showered off the nights affairs.
"Pup..." Robin couldn't meet Nancy's eyes, "I like it when you call me that...it makes me feel less... like a monster. Less like a beast. I'm not those things, I don't ever want to hurt anyone... not like they try and hurt me."
Nancy's breath shuttered on its exhale, standing up from where she was crouched, just barely taller than Robin who was seated.
"You're not those things," she ran the back of her hand across the soft skin of Robin's cheek, "and even if you were I'd still love you... Pup." She pressed a kiss to the top of Robin's head before pulling them in for a tight hug.

fruity four curse discovery </3
its time to talk about how the fruity four found out Holy Shit They’re Monsters
they all had very different experiences, and none of them experienced overnight transformations, but it didn’t take its time before the real onslaught yknow
okay starting with nancy because she’s complicated. she actually started this process way back in season one when she first went into the upside down and came out and was very much Never The Same. after her first trip she lost her appetite and regular food, while still nourishing her, didn’t really do much for her in the sense of satisfaction. something was always missing and she couldn’t put her finger on what. she sunburned easier and lost endurance in the sun way quicker than she used to. she was suddenly allergic to all of her genuine silver jewelry, which was her first inkling that something was off beyond not taking care of herself like she used to. she didn’t get many of the physical benefits other than basically getting up without a scratch after she got thrown against that wall in season 3, and also having more intuition to things around her (journalism moment). also you wanna know how she pulled so many people? by being really awesome first and foremost but after her first foray into the upside down it’s really hard to not pay attention to her. then things start getting WEIRD after the second upside down trip and getting vecna’d- where she’s suddenly cold all the time and she can’t really eat anything and everything feels so intense like she swears she’s hallucinating hearing conversations that happen across a house with crystal clear clarity and seeing dust flying around across the room. nancy being nancy who shoves all sorts of actually concerning things surrounding herself under the rug thinks its just nerves and trauma but like no girl! ur cursed! and things go crazy when she finds her fangs and robin, who touches her shoulder in concern with her heavy silver rings (that have been kinda bothering her since she got back from the upside down ngl) and it burns like holy shit. shit goes haywire when they go “okay but maybe later” and then vecna happens and nancy, who isn’t dumb, who’s noticed that all of this got even worse when they went into the upside down again, and suddenly her mouth starts watering when she looks at the pulsepoint and robin’s throat and FUCK she’s a vampire oh god damnit
okay now robin bc gfs who r cursed together stick together!! as someone who’s only experience with the upside down had been the russians weird experiment, shit really hits the fan when she goes through watergate and suddenly everything is super weird and she hates it tbh. i hc both robin and nancy as autistic so this is sensory nightmare for both of them bc holy shit robin can smell and hear everything and it freaks her out! robin, who doesn’t shove anything weird happening to her down until she explodes immediately starts talking about how weird she feels bc what if she has rabies or smth and actually snaps at steve when he tries to interrupt her and she’s like “oh my god why did i do that”. also her rings have been bothering her ever since they got back, all irritated and almost burning, and she wishes she just bit it and took them off earlier because holy shit she burned nancy and it scared her BAD because before this nancy had been sorta fearless so now nancy is kinda crumbling and she cries out in actual pain and robin is kinda floored?? and freaking out bc she wants to make it better but she doesn’t know how- the first thing she does it toss her rings across the room because obviously smth is wrong with them! this is way strange and they find out robin has fangs too but she actually doesn’t turn into a wolf until after vecna’s initial “defeat” since she only fully turns on the full moon. when that happens though everyone is like “what the fuck” especially because steve does it at the same time!! and they’re all like!! what the fuck!! they kind of suspected that’s what happened with robin before she ever turned but they sorta thought what she was going through would be it, they didn’t think she’d actually turn!! and then run away!! and then get lost in the woods!! that is a long night for everyone involved. also fun fact the iconic boost actually switches to robin straight up picking up nancy by her hips and LIFTING HER UP TO THE PORTAL to which nancy is like “oh my god this can not be fr” bc she’s STRUGGLING and blushing like crazy (and it looks kinda crazy bc now her blood is like turning BRIGHT RED)
okay eddie time so im abusing the fact that eddie stayed back in the trailer as “holy fucking shit why does the sun make me want to keel over and die now” on top of yknow being wanted nbd. he notices he’s way stronger and everything is more intense and when robin mentions feeling weird he’s kinda like “oh wait me too” and its like “huh” but in this au eddie survives the attack because like nancy, he puts two and two together but not bc he’s as smart as her but bc he’s kinda obsessed with vampires, and he TURNS INTO A FUCKING BAT and camos and everyone thinks he’s dead for like a week before he comes back and is like “.... surprise....” he then gets almost murdered by everyone bc wtf. (also poor dustin thinking the bats ate eddie is making me laugh rn). despite the shitty thing with the sun eddie likes being even weirder and also like super strong and cool like a dnd character and this is kinda fun (the blood part isn’t awesome tho bc in my mind he has sorta subpar control and everyone is lucky steve heals fast bc...)
steve time steve time so funnily enough steve just thinks he’s really worried about everyone and i think his very wild and new instincts are the reason he has the audacity to give nancy that six lil nuggets speech in this au if i decide that still happens bc being entirely real with u steve stans that scene WAS in character u just don’t want to admit it but ANYWAYS he’s basically freaking out the entire time trying to protect his little siblings and his closest friends and he basically forgets to worry about the fact that his dna is literally changing lol! no one suspects that anything really happened to steve until he actually shifted into a wolf bc he’s been so stressed that he doesn’t even notice. this makes the first change back way harder on him though bc she’s like “oh my god what the fuck you guys” and robin was like “damn i was hoping that wouldnt happen but ok”.
that first night of the change is so stressful bc robin is running so god damn fast and tiny nancy is like trying to pounce on her to keep her still (because she’s realized her own strength at this point) and wolf robin is like “ok so we’re racing now okay” and makes it even harder! they end up getting lost for 2 days afterwards fun fact and this is before nance feels comfortable feeding on anyone so the extended period before being able to find a solution is no good. steve is the one that finds them when eddie is freaking out abt how there’s no way they’re gonna find them and steve is like “wdym??? they’re that way” and eddie like “OH MY GOD YOU CAN SMELL THEM” and they get found.
after this steve is more aware of how different things are and on one hand he’s grateful for the buffs but on the other hand oh my god this is so messed up oh my god
also eddie and nancy caring for their partners respectively after the first change and they feel like (no pun intended) dog shit is smth that can be so personal <3
robin at some point is like “holy shit i’d rather have rabies” and nancy’s like “no you wouldn’t” in this super soft gay ass voice as robin is like “yeah ur right” THEYRE SO TENDER okay i gotta stop

Hi there! I really loved your werewolf and werecat piece for ronancetober, especially the pic of Robin half-transformed. I was wondering if I could have your permission to use it as a Halloween icon? I would obviously credit you in my blog description. Thanks either way! <3

I was actually cleaning up Robin a tad when you asked.
You can totally use either for a Halloween icon w/ credit in your blog description. Thank you for asking, I greatly appreciate that. 💜

Ronance; part 1 here immortal!nancy, werewolf!robin; 1k words
Nancy has seen war. She's seen centuries of it.
She's seen war and she's seen death, although only one of those things she's been able to participate in, and that's why Vecna chooses her.
It was the isolation and so many years of it, she thinks, despite the past handful she's spent with people who understand, who live it but live it differently, this thing beyond reason.
It's only, she couldn't save her best friend. She couldn't save her family.
She couldn't stop those wars and those deaths she saw no matter how hard she tried because she may be immortal but she's still just a girl at heart, a girl destined to let down the people she loves.
Vecna reminds her of it, shows it to her, says she hurt while she was dying. She screamed your name. Did you hear her, Nancy? Did you hear her dying?
And Nancy almost welcomes it like relief. She's never had the option before, to let it just be over, and she's more than outlived her welcome on this green and terrible earth, so why should she stay?
Only it's not that simple, is it, because no matter how much Vecna tries to remind her how long she was alone, all she has to do is remember that cabin in the woods and the impossible sorts of people who welcomed her into it to know it's not that simple.
She was alone, but she's not anymore. She never has to be again. She has options and she has community and she has--
"Nancy?! Nancy, you're-- oh my god, oh my god, I have you, I have you, you're here, you're still here--"
"Never left," she gasps, collapsed with legs akimbo and one arm pointing in the wrong direction where she's held tight but gentle in Robin's lap.
Robin. She's crying, sobbing really, as she pushes Nancy's hair off her forehead and presses her lips there instead, murmuring reassurances all the while that they're both still here, they're both okay, the world isn't over and neither are they.
The snapped bone in Nancy's arm heals faster than they can collect themselves to set it, stuck at the wrong angle and cradled to Nancy's chest in a makeshift sling of Robin's overshirt during the trip back to home base. A lot has changed during this battle, and the war hasn't been won, but they've collected a few more people in the process.
Steve and Max have a boy who will have to learn to drink blood when he wakes up out cold in the loft and there's a cheerleader who is supposed to be dead making tea in the kitchen, and Robin full shifts to let Nancy bury her face into the fur at her neck and scream when Jonathan resets her arm and it's so…
The war is not over. It's barely just beginning.
Nancy has always known that there was so much space for evil within these sorts of abilities but she'd forgotten, she thinks.
Curled up and still shaking as the pain radiates up her arm and sets the whole thing throbbing, Nancy lets herself rest limp against the warm curl of Robin's wolf form around her. Quiet but fiercely awake, guarding Nancy while she can't properly be on guard for herself.
She had forgotten, amidst this life, that something, someone, like Vecna could use these powers for anything other than a private and quiet little life of hiding from the world but not from each other. She had forgotten that men like Brenner would do terrible things to special little girls just to try and harness that power.
She forgot, and part of her hates herself for that, but part of her wants to sing at the feeling of it, forgetting the threats that consumed her every waking thought for so long.
When she wakes up, Robin is human again, still radiating heat in the bed they've come to share, and still curled up around Nancy protectively, but with long fingers winding through hair this time in a way big, padding paws never could.
"You're still here," Nancy breathes, pulling herself close by her good arm because healing quickly doesn't mean she doesn't feel the pain of it, the itch of it, all condensed down in time but not intensity.
"Never left," Robin promises, a croak to her voice and a shine to her eyes as she presses her forehead up against Nancy's and nuzzles their noses right up next to each other. "Never leaving-- you scared the shit outta me, I'm never going anywhere ever again--"
Nancy's not a fan of being cut off, not a fan of doing it either, but it's just a brush of lips across Robin's, a breath of a thing. A breath and a shaking inhale and Robin pulling her in to kiss her deeper and fuller and with all the fear and love in the world.
"You can't lose me, you know," Nancy reminds her when they pull away, lips still lingering on Robin's cheek, letting those warm hands roam in search of Nancy's physical okayness. "Not possible."
Robin breathes in sharply, hand gripping Nancy's waist tight.
"You've never let impossible stop you before, Nancy Wheeler," she says on a long exhale. "My beautiful, impossible thing."
Vecna had looked at Nancy and seen eons of hurt, of loss, of grief, but when Nancy pulls Robin to tuck her face into her neck, to offer solace in the same way it had been offered to her in this place, she knows he doesn't get what that means.
The hurt, the grief? They were only ever proof that no matter the gaps in her humanity, Nancy has never stopped being capable of love. Nancy Wheeler loves big but for too long she has loved quiet, in secret, behind closed doors where no one could use it against her. The only reason Vecna could get to her was because she's finally learned to be loud again in her loving.
She has no question in her heart that it's because of this, her very own impossible girl, her big goofy mutt and her kind-hearted lover too smart for her own good, that her love is what made her vulnerable.
That's always been the case, hasn't it? That's the crux of being human.
"I'm still here," she murmurs into the mess of hair at the crown of Robin's head. "I'm right here with you."
It's a promise. It's a hope.
It's love, with all the pain and grief it brings.
And after all this time? Nancy's still not ready to let it go.
