Thoughts on What Lies Within, not really gonna be careful about spoilers so cut:
TL;DR: I am whelmed.
The bad stuff first:
I tried not to expect too much in the way of the Commander Has Trauma Arc but I'm still disappointed the recollector just worked exactly as planned. And needing to grab more energy on the fly is not really a setback when it was immediately solved. I did think we would get a fair amount of NPC stuff instead but I didn't think it'd be to this extent in the final instance compared to how much we got of Commander. If they try to go back on this and do a whole "it didn't ACTUALLY work", my immediate reaction will be "that's an asspull" since that's the sort of thing I'd hope would get some kind of foreshadowing somewhere (unless I missed text somewhere).
Gameplay wise, the mini events are new and immediately overused after the first two times and felt very FFXIV-y which is not good to me. Felt like there was too much busywork before the big instance too compared to past releases but maybe I was annoyed because I wanted to get to the big stuff faster. I was lucky the mini events didn't bug for me but the crate one bugged for my partner and I could see all the random shit other people brought Chul-Moo.
I wonder if this will be an unpopular opinion but the final boss didn't feel like a GW2 story boss at all. I understand a lot of the previous instances of major story releases are regarded as too difficult by some but this felt like an extreme over correction in difficulty. Zero urgency compared to What Lies Beneath, huge AOE telegraphs, rinse and repeat phases.
Ok, the good stuff:
The memorials and memory steps were so good. I predictably picked Vlast and Blish but I was very tempted to choose Cinder. She was a surprising option to be included but thinking about it, she was as much of a "sacrificed/out of my control" death as Vlast and Blish. And I'm curious what the Aurene one would look like.
Voice acting was top notch as always and always the best part. I actually did enjoy the dialogue throughout the chapter.
And tiny Gorrik! And actually seeing Trahearne!
AND THE TRIPLE DATE. Yes I picked Canach, though for Luci he's like a brother, and he was great as always. And Taimi and Gorrik???? I'm happy for them.
Also Commander just literally yeeting the glass and then "oops clumsy me", perfection.
I think forcing commander to relax a bit was a great end to all that. I hope we'll start seeing more of Commander in social and casual situations with their friends. It would be nice if it was like. Dragon's Watch making an effort to invite Commander to relax with them, especially if everyone hears about the events of What Lies Beneath/Within.
Also I haven't done the new parts of the meta yet but I did enjoy THE TUNNEL in the story instance. There was a lot more verticality in it than I expected. I don't know if my thoughts on this will change once I do the meta tomorrow.
So, again, I am just kinda whelmed. I did enjoy the story! And I think it ended on a good note. But boy there are things I wish they'd done a little differently.

Chapter Sixteen - Loud and clear
♡♡♡
You wake up in a quiet and lonely room. There’s a slight pounding in your head, but other than that, you’re alright. You take a second to remember what happened and where you were.
This wasn’t home. Your body relaxes in relief.
However, you remember that you were last at the Kerner estate. You had been riding with the duke. Upon returning to the house, your mother had kicked up a fuss. You had got upset and run off. Tom proposed to you. You panicked. You fell off your horse.
Oh. Oh no. You fell off the horse.
Sitting up, you look around you. There’s an empty chair pulled up to the side of the bed. Someone had been in here. No one was here now though.
Now that you’re sitting up, you wait and see if you can hear anyone about.
Nothing.
You don’t know how long you’ve been resting in bed for, but you want to know where everyone is. You grab the robe which had been draped over the end of the bed and put it on. Leaving the room, you take a look down the hall, but there is still no sign of life.
You decide to walk until you came across someone.
You’re surprised you don’t hear your mother screaming down the halls. That makes you believe she isn’t here. It would make sense that she was kicked of the property.
You draw closer to the drawing room. You can hear voices now. Quiet. You reach the door and poke your head inside. Everyone is gathered there. Your chest swells with warmth at the sight of Bob and Carole.
Then your eyes land on the duke.
Tom sits perfectly still in his chair, eyes focused on the window. He doesn’t seem to be present with the current conversation that is being had. You can’t help but admire him. Handsome. Strong. Sad... He’s sad. You can see it on him. He’s missing his handsome smiles that he gave you when you were out on the hill.
“You’re awake!”
Your attention is brought back to Carole who sees you standing there. Suddenly, all eyes are on you. Tom is up on his feet in seconds, looking over at you. You find yourself suddenly shy.
“How are you feeling?”
“Do you need anything?”
“You should rest.”
Bob, Carole, and Mrs Kerner all speak up at once. You glance quickly at Tom who remains standing there, watching you.
“I’m fine. I just... I woke up... alone. I wanted to find someone.”
Tom drops his gaze from you. He had wanted to remain by your bedside until you woke up. He wanted to be there. But he was persuaded by his friends to leave the room and join them. It was evening now, the sun turning the sky a deep orange. You have been out all day. Tom needed to take his mind off of you for a little while. At least, that’s what the Kerner’s had said. The truth is he hadn’t stopped thinking about you.
All he can do is think of you.
“What are you two doing here?” You turn to Bob and Carole.
“We came as soon as we heard. Mother returned home quite angry. She was yelling and storming about the place. She had claimed you had been kidnapped by the Kerner’s, but when we got her to calm down and get to the point, we didn’t hang about. She had told us you had an accident while out with the duke, so we rushed over. She was unhappy about it, but there wasn’t much she could do,” Carole explains.
“I see... I’m glad you came.”
They both smile at you.
“Come, sit, you must be quite hungry,” Lady Kerner says, offering you a seat amongst them. As you go and sit down near the duke, Mrs Kerner turns to Chipper, her butler, and requests he gets you something to dine on. He bows and takes his leave.
“How are you feeling?” Ron asks, just wanting to make sure.
“My head hurts a little, but other than that, I feel okay. I feel a little... out of sorts,” you tell him.
Ron, wanting to make sure everything was alright, presses the back of his fingers against your forehead. You let him and wait.
“No temperature. Though it would make us rest easy if you stayed here for a few days. At least until the wedding,” Lord Kerner says.
“The wedding?” You ask, looking around the room.
Carole nods her head softly.
“Mother has brought my wedding forward. I am to marry Lord Bradshaw in 3 days. That way she can move onto yours. We don’t have much time,” Carole sighs.
“She isn’t giving me until the end of the season?” You ask.
Carole shakes her head.
Bob turns to Tom.
“You should challenge father as soon as possible.”
“After the wedding,” Tom says. “I’ll challenge him after the wedding.”
“Challenge?” You ask, looking between Bob and Tom.
“The duke is going to propose a duel against your father for your freedom. You will then be free to make your own choices,” Mrs Kerner says.
You turn to Tom.
“Please tell me this in jest,” you say.
Tom shakes his head.
You stand up and look at him.
“You cannot. You cannot duel him. I have never heard of something so foolish and dangerous. I am not worth the trouble. Oh, just let me marry Lord Simpson and this will never have to be spoken about again.”
“No!” Bob speaks up. “Don’t throw away our only chance.”
“Bob, you will be taken care of, I promise. I am causing far too much fuss. Let me put everyone out of their misery.”
Tom stands up and looks at you.
“Watching you marry another will only cause me misery. The terms for the duel are your freedom. I will free you from your chains and let you fly. You will obviously not accept my proposal, so I will do the next best thing I can do,” he speaks plainly, almost coldly.
“You do not have to do any of this,” you whisper.
“Of course, I do,” he replies.
“Why?”
Tom offers you a small smile as he looks at you.
“Because I am in love with you.”
You find all breath leaving your body. He loves you. He said so himself, right in front of everyone.
The room is silent. All eyes watching the pair of you.
Tom is waiting. He wants you to say something.
You part your lips, hoping words would come to you, but you can’t seem to say anything. You try again. Nothing. You just stare at him.
Chipper returns with a dish in hand. He ignores the atmosphere as he sets the dish down for you to have when you’re ready. The smell of the food tears your gaze away from Tom.
Bob calls your name softly. You look at him.
“Say something. Please,” he pleads.
You glance at Tom. His face looks slightly pained. Your silence is hurting him.
“I... I’m sorry,” you whisper.
That’s not what he wanted to hear, but it was better than the silence. Tom nods and excuses himself from the room. You sit down slowly, heart cracking as Tom leaves.
You couldn’t say it.
You couldn’t.
Carole reaches over and takes your hand in hers. You don’t say or do anything. You just there in silence.
The Kerner’s share a glance before Ron leaves the room, waving Bob to come with him. Bob leaves quietly with him. You stay in the room with the ladies and Mrs Kerner’s dog, who comes over and sits by your feet.
You love him.
Ron, Bob, and Tom are gone for the next couple of hours. While Mrs Kerner and Carole look after you, they have all left the estate. Tom is going to your family home to propose the duel.
He must do it now for your sake.
Carole will marry her love, Tom will fight for your freedom, and you may then choose where to go. Though he will not leave you without asking once more. His heart couldn’t bear you marrying another.
The carriage pulls up and he climbs out with Ron and Bob.
His knocks on the door are firm and demanding. The door opens moments later. Your mother looks startled as she sees him standing there.
“Your Grace.” Your mother looks behind him. “Where is my daughter?”
“Resting. Where is your husband?” The duke asks.
“In his office... Why?”
“I have an offer for him.”
Your mother narrows her eyes at him but lets him enter. She is surprised to see Bob and goes to argue with him, but Ron steps between them, protecting Bob from his mother. Ron glares at the woman as they walk past.
The duke enters the office and stand before your father. The man looks up at him.
“What is the meaning of this?” He asks.
“My demands are simple. In 4 days time you will meet me at the Kerner residence for a duel. You will set your daughter free from this facade you’re both playing. If you do not, everyone will know about what you are up to, and that you disrespected the duke. You will never be able to show your faces again. Shall I lose, I will either die by my honour, or return home alone. But I do not intend on losing.”
Your father stare coldly at the man.
“Get out of my house,” your father hisses.
“Those are my terms. Take them or leave them. I will be waiting outside the Kerner estate at dawn in 4 days.”
Your mother glares at the duke.
“How dare you!”
Ron keeps Bob close as they all leave again. Both of your parents are yelling and throwing a fit. None of them listen as they exit the house again.
Your father has 4 days to make a choice. Be there and face the duke or be the face of all the gossip that will be sure to follow if he does not.
All Tom can think about it you.
