well I'M still stuck on morgwen, let's hear about the interim (BBC merlin). fine if not morgwen but i assume it is
well it is morgwen inasmuch as anything I write for merlin bbc is morgwen but it is actually more focused on a time when they aren't in the same place, which is to say it's basically me going "the show didn't do enough character work to justify morgana's transformation between seasons 3 and 4 so I guess I've gotta do it for them!" and going from there, particularly exploring the relationship between morgana and morgause during that period of time.
it's the character development from mostly good to evil that morgana deserved and didn't get, as written by me. is the plan, anyway.
and yeah it's going to be at least subtextually morgwen because, well. me
There was pain.  That was the sum and total of her thoughts – or almost. A few other fragments; Merlin poisoned me, why, whywhywhy and does Camelot still stand, is Uther alive, is Gwen, oh, Gwen, please be safe. But pain, and she was going to die and didn’t even understand what had happened. Morgause said – she said- “Morgana. My sister.”  She struggled to understand what was going on. To work out what had happened (he poisoned me) and what was happening now. It all hurt too much, though, and all she could do was lie there and whimper and hate how weak she felt. A cool hand pushed her hair off her brow. “It’s all right, sister. You’re safe.” Never safe. Not in Camelot, hiding her magic, alone and scared. Had Merlin worked it out? Was that why he had poisoned her? There were tears running out of the corner of her eyes. “Hush, sweet sister. I know it hurts. But I must rid your body of the poison. Soon you will be well. I promise.”  Had Camelot fallen? Was Arthur dead? Was Gwen? Was Merlin? He said he was your friend.(He lied.) She bit her lower lip and squeezed her eyes closed. Was she dead?

so curious about catgirl and wolfboy
Oh boy, this is the most chaotic WIP and also the one that requires the most explanation, haha. Thanks for asking, though!
The Further Adventures of Catgirl and Wolfboy is an urban fantasy story inspired by Irish mythology, about Faolan, an immortal druid living in present-day NYC and his mischievous cat shapeshifter faerie friend, Ciara. (Faolan's name means "little wolf" so I like to refer to him and Ciara as the catgirl & wolfboy duo, though my sister keeps protesting that this makes it sound like I'm writing about furries, which is not the case.)
The chaotic part is that it's the sequel to a short story I wrote in a fiction workshop back in spring 2022, which had a very long developmental period. Faolan as a character has been bouncing around in my head for about a decade–in middle school I wrote Percy Jackson fanfiction about original characters who I then later transplanted to a fully original story, where he was a side character who briefly popped up to offer them some magical advice advice but then I found him interesting enough that I took him and stuck him in a different original story idea, which I never ended up writing. Then I randomly wrote a short story about him for a workshop and got a lot of feedback like "this is fun, but it feels like there's a lot more of the story than can really fit in this page count." Further Adventures is the note document where I keep ideas for any kind of future stories about Faolan and Ciara (maybe a short story sequel, maybe a whole novel?? who knows??) and currently consists of a lot of eloquent bullet points like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's probably the least existing of my current works-in-progress, but I do open the document to add random thoughts every so often, so I guess it is technically a WIP. (It just…doesn't really have a plot beyond Faolan and Ciara wandering around and getting in trouble with various supernatural Irish creatures.)
Here's Faolan and Ciara in the original short story:

"Where is the Palestinian MLK??"
He's being cancelled by Tumblr users with no reading compensation and no backbones.
Your moralizing over if it was mainly an attack on military targets or civilians brings the world no closer to ending apartheid in Palestine-Israel.

Replies to this post!
@necro-divergent:
that post’s got some weird conflation between “writing for marketability” and “thinking about audience interpretation and enjoyment” that i do not understand. not a fan of it either
It's conflating a lot of stuff, frankly. Leaning into one's kinks without apologetic scaffolding in the narration is different from, uh, "two people feeling the biggest craziest feelings of their entire life and they cannot do anything about it except bang it out". There are a lot of different things being clustered together here, and I frankly think it would have been served better by talking about register, rather than author motivation.
But yeah, you're right to point out that considering one's audience on any level is different from aiming to be maximally marketable. Do I "write for myself"? Sure, and one reason I got into writing fanfic was because I was burned out on public fandom interaction and needed to retreat into my own head and interpretations. But if I am putting the effort into writing at all, I am usually thinking on some level about how it will be read, even if it's just on the level of "would this paragraph be comprehensible to someone who doesn't live inside my head and already know what I mean by it?"
@wizardysseus:
i dislike it in a different way? being that: i do not really enjoy reading about fucking, and am made constantly aware in fandom spaces that what is self-indulgent for me may look like holding back the good stuff to someone else. so ultimately the same reason: you're talking about how you don't want writers to give a shit but how do YOU know if a writer gives a shit? based on whether their writing is tailored to YOUR preferences?
I feel this sooo much, if for different reasons. It's actually a point of insecurity I have about my current fic, so, cool post to see at this particular moment in time!
@aeide-thea:
ugh tumblr ate my first reply but. agree, & basically i think that post has the same problem as #ownvoices in that it thinks you can necessarily deduce things abt an author's positionality/attitude/&c from a text. which is just. not in fact true! sometimes your thin-slicing will be right, yes, but sometimes people are operating according to a pattern you don't personally recognize, and your assumptions about them are in fact totally off-base in erasive, dangerous ways!
Yeah, that's a good comparison. And, as I implied in my original tags, it's a little rich to frame an entire post around what you, the poster, personally like to read, but in a way that's supposed to champion personal enjoyment on the part of writers. Like.... what makes you think people who've written stuff that's off-putting to you cared about what you thought, then?

🔥 cooking
i like recipes that are longer, you can go into a little zen state where you just focus on what you're making and it's neat. of course, it's not practical for like when it's the workweek and things are busy. but if i'm trying out a new recipe just to do something different and fun, i like when it's not just a quick fix.

@wizardysseus replied to your post: “ Tam Lin October Questions 2: Which novel retelling do you like...”
favorite is fire and hemlock by diana wynne jones. i wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, but to me it’s a really important book, even though it plays fast and loose with its inspiration. my least favorite that i’ve read so far is roses and rot by kat howard? i was uh… super not impressed by characters, worldbuilding, dialogue, romance, themes, or interpretation of the legend. so that was a waste of time.
I also love Fire and Hemlock! It’s one of those novels that you can read again and again and notice things you missed before. Even though the interpretation is a bit “fast and loose” I think Diana Wynne Jones does an amazing job of touching on a lot of the important Tam Lin elements throughout the story.
I have to admit that I never actually finished reading Roses and Rot. It wasn’t for any particular reason. I just sort of set it down and never picked it up again. I think you’ve explained my feelings pretty well, though. It wasn’t overly impressive and I suppose I just forgot about it. I’d like to take another run at it someday, but it isn’t all that high on my To Be Read list. Thank you so much for sharing!

wizard tower story?? love a wizard tower
So Wizard Tower Story is a novella set in a universe I like to fiddle around with when I'm in the mood for to write very dark fantasy. It's about a (you guessed it) tower of apprentices to a semi-immortal wizard who all striving to be named his successor, even though magic in this world comes from pain and suffering, and therefore mastering their power involves submitting themselves to all kinds of horrible tests and ways to stretch their mental/physical limits. The novella follows one particular apprentice of middling power but strong ambition who decides to make a deal with a group of demons that everyone else believes to be myths in order to increase his magic. This does not, as you can probably guess, go super well for him and has some unexpected consequences.
Here's a snippet of the main character having a nightmare about his very normal and not at all terrifying home:

as the sun will rise. obviously
thank you!!!
as the sun will rise, for those who may not know, is my upcoming sequel/sister story to ever just the same. in the grand tradition of romance novels in general, it follows the sibling of the previous books' protagonist --eve's younger brother raoul -- as the prince in cinderella with a she loves me-esque twist; cinderella is a trans woman, his old friend from boarding school who he hasn't seen in years and only corresponds with via letter.
it will require a significant amount of finagling to get the proper bones of the plot hammered out beyond that hook, but will probably feature (in greater or lesser capacities) queer coming of age, Gender Stuff, eleonore learning to choose her own happiness after years of thinking she deserves only the bare bones of the life she wants, the return of those two gay guys who sold wedding rings to belle and eve, frank continuing to be The Worst, Gender Magic, a deliberate homage to the best scene in ever after, and belle and eve Acquiring A Child
i have, of course, not yet written a single word of this project lmao

@wizardysseus replied to your post “☕️ locked tomb?”:
how DO you feel about lesbian necromancers in space
we hates it, my precious!!! we hates it so much because it's like...yeah, okay, there are lesbians. there are necromancers. the series is in space and none of those things actually say anything about what the series is about or what the tone is or what those elements mean in context. as a description it either (a) says nothing at all about the series in terms of story or, honestly, character, and certainly not theme or (b) says really misleading things about the series in terms of story, character, and theme.
it's just...some of the apotheosis of the book recommendation trend of "sticking words together that technically describe elements of a book but don't actually convey anything important or relevant about it" combined with "there is queerness in it and that's the most important/only thing you need to know" in a way that irritates me all the time and actually irritates me more here because I feel like. okay.
maybe this is mean or whatever but I feel like it's possibly the least interesting way that a person could describe this series. and also possibly it's this kind of thing that leads to things like that one tor.com article about how it's okay that gideon/harrow is toxic and abusive because that way people know what a problematic relationship looks like :) and I scream. chewing on my own damn fingers about it
thinking of comparisons and I'm sort of...this won't even mean anything to most people and it's a bit of an exaggeration (tlt has fewer trigger warnings, for one) but it's sort of like if I went around recommending doctrine of labyrinths as "a gay wizard has adventures with his brother"

22 and 23 for the book ask?
22. What's the longest book you read?
The Pomegranate Gate by Ariel Kaplan, which is 560 pages! Very interesting fantasy novel inspired by medieval Sephardic Jewish history. Quite long, but definitely worth the read and I'm super intrigued where the sequel will go.
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
Yeah, a fair amount, actually. I'm trying not to be so committed to finishing every book I start if it's not working for me. I thought about keeping a list for my own reference, but I ended up not doing that for most of the year. I do remember not finishing Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner (which…tbh…I mostly tried out of curiosity) because "this is very Freudian" is not something you should really think about a romance novel (college student with mommy realizes the hot older woman she slept with is her friend's mom, drama ensues). Most recently, Girls Can Kiss Now by Jill Gutowitz which is probably a record short time to DNF–I literally didn't even finish the first chapter before deciding the authorial voice was too annoying and throwing in the towel. (Which is unfortunate, because it's the January pick for a local queer book club, but oh well.)
