what are some of ur favorite comic writers working today? could u recommend ur favorite runs of them also?
My knee-jerk response to this was “I don’t read comics actually” lmao, but here’s a couple of answers. I’ve assumed for the sake of this list that you are a Marvel fan, but if you’re looking for something else, ask me!
Saladin Ahmed - I got into his stuff because of Abbott, a miniseries from Boom! about a black journalist in 1970s Detroit who investigates a series of murders that are linked to the occult. The book is about race and about loss and about the responsibility that journalists have to their community.
For Marvel, I have to rec his Black Bolt (2017). It’s the series that really made me care about Mr. Blackagar Boltagon; it’s about prisons and torture and what it means to be a criminal or to be in captivity. (It’s more serious than many Marvel comics, but it is still a Marvel comic, so don’t expect shockingly revolutionary political opinions. All the same, I think it handles its subject matter decently.) It’s gorgeously illustrated by Christian Ward, who is always at his best when he’s in space, and it made me genuinely care about all its characters.
If you like Ahmed, he’s currently writing Magnificent Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales: Spider-Man. And if you like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man, catch them in the upcoming Champions series by Dr. Eve L. Ewing, who wrote the excellent Ironheart series that was unfortunately cut short.
Kieron Gillen - Gillen? On a rec list? Groundbreaking. I know, I know, everyone and their mother will rec Gillen, but it’s for good reason, I promise. I adore his writing. His indies are his best stuff - The Wicked + the Divine, Once & Future, Die, but he’s written plenty of excellent stuff for Marvel too.
Journey into Mystery (starting at #622) introduces a new version of Loki after his death, a version who seeks to do good and be trusted. This heartbreaking run is about trying to fight yourself, your fate, and the fate you make for yourself.
1602 Witchhunter Angela was co-written with Marguerite Bennett. It features Angela and Sera as hunters of witches in the time of King James. It leads into Angela: Queen of Hel, written solely by Marguerite Bennett, in which Angela goes to Hel to retrieve her lover and claim the throne.
Young Avengers (2013). I mean, how could I not rec this? It’s fun, it’s gay, it’s teens who can’t trust their parents learning to rely on each other and themselves to save the day.
Siege (2015), also called Siege: Battleworlds, is the story of Abigail Brand in a never-ending war to defend The Wall. It’s interesting, it’s got a lot of conceptual versions of characters from the Marvel Universe, it’s a pretty neat four-issue mini.
Charles Soule - Charles Soule has the rare gift of taking a character and writing a perfectly respectable, absolutely normal story about the character. That might sound like damning with faint praise, but in this industry, it is truly a rare gift. Real Daredevil fans don’t like his Daredevil (2016), but as a casual fan, I would recommend it. Soule himself is a lawyer, and it comes through in the way he writes.
Also, I don’t know how you feel about Star Wars comics (and I could make a whole other rec list for that lol), but his Star Wars stuff is good - the Lando mini, the Poe Dameron series (honestly the best Poe content ever), the Obi-Wan & Anakin mini.
Mariko Tamaki - Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me is a beautiful, touching coming-of-age story about gay love and gay friendship. It was, for me, one of the few gay YA books that actually felt real and true to my experience.
Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass made me a Harley fan, completely changed my perspective on the character. It’s a graphic novel alternate universe origin story of how a lonely girl learns the true meanings of community, anarchy, friendship, and baseball bats. It explores her relationships with the Joker and with Ivy.
X-23 (2018) made a lot of people mad, but the things they were mad about (the name change from Wolverine back to X-23, the costume change that put her back in that crop top) were editorial mandate and not Tamaki’s fault. Tamaki’s writing is solid, her characterization of Laura is miles better than Taylor’s, and she adds some real depth to Gabby and the Laura/Gabby relationship. The first arc pits Gabby and Laura against the Stepford Cuckoos in a story that takes a different approach to the question of what it means to be a clone.
And that’s what I have for you today! Ask me if you have any more specific recs, but these are the authors whose work I genuinely enjoy reading and look forward to seeing more of.

Secret Wars 2099 #1-5 Thoughts...kinda
Tumblr media
As I have no memories, nor apparently any records, of covering this story when it originally released I figured I’d do it as part of my re-reading project.
So the first things I should make clear is that I DID read these issues cover to cover...but in the trade. So if the recap pages of the original issues did something wonky I don’t know about that. Also I’m not covering these issue by issue. There are a few reasons for that.
For starters that’d be more time consuming and whilst I’m never going to make this deadline I’m trying to blast through Spidey 2099 volume 3 as early into the upcoming 2099 event as possible. My pie in the sky plan was to get it done before ASM #833 but that’s not happening now because shit got in my way. Secondly I’ve already read these issues as they were coming out and so I wanted to make the experience more novel for myself and see how they held up as one big story not a set of individual ones.
Due to this I’m likely not going to get into the nitty gritty of this story as I would issue to issue, pulling out ‘this one panel was weird’ and so forth. I’m going to try and discuss the story as an overview.
And from that perspective this was very enjoyable but does have you scratching your head when trying to reconcile it within continuity. On that fro there are three ways to view it.
a)      Within classic 2099 continuity
b)      Within the then current 2099 continuity off the heels of Spidey 2099 volume 2
c)       And within the continuity that’s yet to come. Maybe I even mentioned that in the posts I did for Spidey 2099 volume 3, I don’t remember and don’t want to spoil myself by checking. I DO remember Roberta/Captain America returns which makes continuity confusing
In fact continuity from all 3 POVs is confusing. I think the best thing to do is to treat this as kind of like the RYV Secret Wars continuity. That is to say it’s not about the ACTUAL versions of the characters you’ve come to know and when we next see the new characters introduced here those will be alternate versions of these guys.
In a sense this is a kind of conceptual part of PAD’s over all story. It exists so you know that there are/could be versions of these characters and concepts ‘out there’ and they could show back up in his main story. Similarly the All-New X-Factor issue that hinted at this series did so more conceptually. The idea being a big corporation who own their own superhero team. This series doesn’t directly pick up those plot threads but it’s conceptually similar, maybe even the intention is that Miguel got the idea for his Avengers from that story.
I don’t know though because this Miguel is drastically different to the one we’ve been following from Superior onwards. Now I’m not familiar with the 90s 2099 stuff much but IIRC Miguel does become the head of Alchemax and his father Tyler Stone is wheelchair bound so is this supposed to be diverging off that? I dunno.
Enough about continuity though, taking this story in isolation as I said it’s enjoyable. There isn’t much wrong with it beyond one notable thing and a few nitpicks.
Nitpicks would be stuff like how the ending feels kind of weird. It bookends the start of the story but I just feel outright showing us something that we already knew (that Black Widow 2099 acts like a literal black widow and kills her lovers) just wasn’t a fitting end for this story. It’s not that it is gross so much as it just feels odd and out of place. Like there was a more fitting coda for this story than following the minor exploits of a minor character amidst this story.
The more notable problem is a plot one. This isn’t a deal breaker but I just don’t really understand the relevance of Mordo 2099’s business card being in the Specialist’s pocket. It’s the instigator for most of the plot and yet the Specialist didn’t seem to have anything to do with Mordo. Was it just a coincidence? Was it planted there to throw the Avengers off Tyler Stone’s trail? It’s never explained. I suppose it could be a coincidence but then that’s rather lazy writing beneath PAD’s usual talents.
Beyond that the story is fun but fairly simple.
Essentially this boils down to the Avengers and Defenders meet, fight, interact a bit more, fight some more (with some Avengers siding with the Defenders) and then they team up to beat a bigger threat.
Not much else goes on, but that’s not a bad thing.
This story didn’t need to be Kraven’s Last Hunt or Watchmen.
It was just a fun superhero action story, which frankly is usually all that Avengers or Defenders stories ever amount to. Substance is a rarity for ether team, you want that check out the F4 or X-men.
What this series excels at is filling in some blanks from the original 2099 universe line, revisiting some old characters from it, introducing some new versions of old faces (like Silver Surfer and Hercules) and just giving you enough for each character for there to be some fun interactions. Maybe that’s all a bit basic but fun is fun.
We never had an Avengers nor Defenders 2099 back when the line exists, at least not as far as I know. And the idea that classic characters like Hercules, Valkyrie and the Surfer would still be around makes a lot of sense. The 2099 reimaginings of older characters are also quite fun. Black Widow literally being a woman who eats her lovers was obvious and yet novel. Hawkeye being a hawk/human hybrid was something different from the 616 version. Hercules being a standing for Thor was a brilliant balance of something new yet familiar. Iron Man and Vision 2099 were novel twists on the classic characters. The characters bounced off each other nicely (especially Hercules and Sub-Mariner) and there were some fun match ups.
The stand out (possibly because PAD had plans for her) though is Roberta Mendez, a.k.a. Captain America 2099. If anyone was the main character in this it was her. She was the most out and out heroic and a worthy heir to Steve’s legacy.
In recent years there has been much, shall we say, ‘heated debate’ regarding female characters, poc characters, female body depictions in comics and legacy characters.
Roberta has oddly been left unmentioned in this discussion which is strange as she ticks all the above boxes and yet is also one of the best examples of how to do such characters.
She is not stereotypically sexy, and the story points out the ‘wrongness’ of that. But it places it in the mouth of a minor character who is bad, and beyond that doesn’t dwell on the topic. I think this is smart because it acknowledges potential backlash but also doesn’t become self-indulgent in calling it out. I think that’s part of the umbridge a lot of people feel. The lack of subtlety and the frankly obnoxious degree to which a lot of modern comics attempt to call out bad actors or problematic views. PAD demonstrates the right way to handle this rather than Jason Aaron’s tactics in his Jane Foster Thor run for instance.
More importantly Roberta isn’t built up as heroic or better than her peers or anyone else through unearned tactics. This isn’t Riri Williams or Rey from Star Wars who’s acclaim in story is rather handed to them. She is a corporate stooge and a tool (one who’s literally activated and deactivated), but one with a conscience. And that conscience lets her fight back and make the right choices, but she isn’t a true blue enemy of ‘the system’. She’s morally and ethically compromised as Captain America and entirely clueless and vulnerable as Roberta. But she still saves people, she still helps people, she still has a moral code and she still believes in Steve Rogers’ values. She is a capable combatant and yet far from invincible.
In short...she’s a flawed super hero. It’s a feat of balanced writing that is worth of applause on PAD’s part as I count myself a fan of Roberta a lot actually.
The second most interesting character in this is Miguel.
Miguel’s portrayal here is interesting in general because it’s a departure from what you would expect having read volume 2 or possibly 2099 in general. He is absolutely the head of a big bad corporation. And he uses people. He is willing to enforce his corporate authority unethically. He is NOT a good person. In volume 2 you could describe him as anti-hero lite. He was more violent and clearly more willing to take life than Peter Parker but he wasn’t the Punisher or Wolverine. He was on the side of the angels but wasn’t one of them basically. Here though he’s definitely not on the side of the angels...but he’s also not on the side of the demons either. Rather he occupies this interesting spot in the middle as his Alchemax Avengers are doing good things and he does let the Defenders go at the end of everything. And yet he does safeguard Alchemax’s safety and legacy and manipulates Roberta.
This is another feat of writing as Miguel can’t be easily put into a box marked good nor bad or even anti-hero.
As for the art, I feel it’s a step down from what Sliney was doing in Spidey 2099 volume 2 but it’s still good, it gets the job done and the reinventions of older heroes works.
All in all if you have the time and cash, and aren’t expecting anything mind blowing I’d recommend checking this out.

It’s Okay That You’re Not What You Expected
Soon to be cross-posted on AO3, a Loganbucky (Wolverine/Winter Soldier) fanfiction for the LoganBucky Fest 2018 prompt: Established Relationship.
@hellyeahloganbucky
Synopsis: Bucky has a night terror, and Logan doesn’t respond fast enough, but he manages the aftermath with obvious practice.
Contains canon-typical but not overly graphic violence.
Logan didn’t sleep anymore.  Not very much, anyway; his healing factor took care of restoring everything that sleep did, so he didn’t really need it except to clear and reset his mind.  He tended to put it off as long as possible, since he … really hated how he usually woke up. His bed at the X-Mansion had gone unused for years now; usually every few months when he wanted to sleep, he left, to stay here, at Avengers Mansion, where there were trained adults who knew how to handle him and who he could blame for stupidity and not simple ignorance if and when he harmed them.
He wasn’t sleeping tonight.  He’d planned to, but he just couldn’t seem to drift off, even curled up to Bucky’s back, holding the man close with his sharp nose pressed into his neck where his scent was concentrated. Bucky was cuddling his hands and using his arm as a pillow, and he wouldn’t have moved for the world.
That was, until Bucky’s heart rate started to rise.  It took him a minute to recognize the noise; he didn’t usually take notice of heartbeats, but in the nearly silent room, that and his love’s quickening breath was all he could hear.  Muscles slowly tensed under him and his scent began to shift as adrenaline started pumping from a building night terror.
Logan pressed his nose harder into his love’s neck and murmured, “Shh.  Bucky. I’m here.  It’s okay, darlin’.  It’s not real.” Sometimes, when he caught the dreams early enough, that was enough.
Bucky flexed in his arms and the metal of his left hand suddenly clenched hard enough to tear the tendons and cartilage in Logan’s wrist, making him snarl with pain, trying and failing to pull his hand away. “Bucky! James, kid, love, darlin’, I’m here,” He ran through as many names as he could think of, trying to find one that could penetrate the haze. “Bucky, it’s me, it’s Logan, fuck.” He grimaced.
Bucky threw him out of the bed and was pinning him to the floor the next second, eyes wide and blank and face pulled into a wide grimace of a snarl.  He didn’t speak- he never spoke during terrors like this, just reached for his hunting knife.
Logan grimaced.  His wrist had already healed, so he had two choices.  Throw Bucky off him and continue the fight until he got in an impact that stunned him until he woke up, or let him ‘kill’ him and snap Bucky out of it by the sight of his not-death.  He wryly thought he was getting too old for this shit as he just went limp and let the knife slash his throat, making a gargled shriek that never quite cut off.  His healing was too quick for a throat wound to kill him.  Well then.  He sort of preferred it when he actually died- it was less painful.  But the spurt of blood was enough to get through to Bucky.
By the time Logan’s throat had knitted itself back together and he was sitting up, coughing up the remaining blood and spitting it out into the mess, Bucky was back against the bed, head in his hands and knees pulled up. “I’m so sorry.”
Logan grunted softly and pulled a black towel out of their nightstand nearby to wipe the worst of the blood off him.  Well, there went that shirt . . . he was never gonna get the smell out.  He pulled it off and left it balled up on the towel when he made his way over to Bucky’s side and put a firm hand on his knee. “I’m fine, kid.”
“Don’t call me that.” Bucky didn’t look up but his grimace was audible. “I hate it when you call me that.”
“Because it’s what Steve calls you.” Logan guessed, mostly to get him talking.
“No, because-“ Bucky dropped his hands with a frustrated groan. “Because it reminds me how fucking old you are.”
Logan rolled his eyes. “Hey.  We’ve been through that.” He bumped his shoulder against Bucky’s and sighed when his lover pulled away. “Bucky.”
“How did it end up like this?” Bucky whispered, staring at the blood soaked towel. “All I ever really wanted was to live a calm, normal life. Maybe get a job at Stark Industries.  Have a lover to hold me when the nights got cold and the heating was out.  Someone to care for, who’d do the same for me.” He dropped his head again. “How did I end up a hundred years old, still looking thirty, slitting my fiance’s throat in the middle of the night?”
Logan sighed and gripped him, pulling him closer to cuddle. Bucky fought halfheartedly, but he was a cuddler under all his conditioning and he ended up relaxing when he realized Logan wasn’t letting go.  Despite being a supersoldier, he still wasn’t quite as strong as his mutant lover when it came down to sheer brute strength in close quarters.
“Bucky.” Logan said after a minute, and Bucky twitched. “I want you to listen close to me, darlin’.  I love you.  It’s okay that you’re not who you thought you’d be.  It’s okay that things didn’t turn out the way you planned.” He ducked his head to nuzzle Bucky’s hair, sighing softly. “Can you honestly tell me you’d have been happier hiding away in Brooklyn, taking stolen moments with someone you can’t tell anyone about, if that, than you are here, with a group of friends and partners who would defend you with every ounce of strength they have if someone threatened you for who you love?”
Bucky shifted to get more comfortable against him and his flesh hand unclenched to come to rest on one of Logan’s. “And with you.  If that hadn’t happened … I never could’ve stayed with you.” Then he grimaced again. “But god, I don’t deserve to.  I tried to kill you.  I might have killed your wife.”
“No.” Logan dragged him up to look him in the eye harshly. “Don’t you ever say that again.  Don’t you ever insult my ability to recognize the scent of the man I loved, even masked in blood. I know that man wasn’t you.  He may have trained you, but he was not you.  Never, ever you.” He rested his head on Bucky’s forehead, holding him there as Bucky struggled slightly. “What can I say to help you tonight?” He asked after a moment, letting him go somewhat but keeping him from leaving with a firm hand on his wrist.
Bucky looked down at their hands and then up at Logan’s face, eyes trailing down his neck. “I don’t know.” He said softly. “I just …” He looked down at his left shoulder and his face twisted.  He reached up and started to unlatch the metal arm.
Logan let him, until he began to struggle, unable to reach all the locking mechanisms by himself.  Even then, he waited until Bucky was nearly in tears with frustration to quietly lean forward and get the last few catches himself.  The arm was left harmless on the floor and he helped Bucky up by the other hand, pulling him back to the bed.
There, Logan shifted over him and tilted his head up to bare his throat. “See?  I’m okay.” He bent again to kiss Bucky softly, which Bucky shakily returned after a moment when it sank in. “I’m okay.  You will be, and it’s okay that you aren’t.  I’m gonna be here.”
Bucky shut his eyes, not really believing it but quiet now. Logan settled with an arm over him, tucked this time against his side with his head tucked to the remains of Bucky’s metal shoulder. “I’m here, darlin’.  I’ll always be here.”

These  pictures  says a lot more to me as well. And I’m sure noone will take me serious but believe me the story I’ll do you will … lol
Siren is my favorite out of the kids I just hadn’t figured out what to do with her. Now I have an idea.
As you probably know. The story I  plan on writing all of the kids except Ren die.
Also I’m debating whether or not to have my simself die He just thinks she had died or something But to be honest I am leaning toward her dying. Leaving just M.K and Ren ( Don’t worry the story I plan has a happy ending of course   Who doesn’t like a good happy ending how if Meg dies? Only time will tell ;) )
But This story allows everything to fall into place in an area where it just makes sense right down to M.K’s tattoos. I also thought it would be interesting to note that M.K spends a lot of time with Meg because he knows this is going to happen  in the future which leaves the other kids sort of neglected.
And  The other kids seem to be more independent and not as bothered by it but Ren Is curious .
And she kind of  starts investigating  things. To a point where M.K has to step in and sort of intimidate her  to get her to back off a bit.
Which only makes her even more curious eventually  in the end she ends up finding it out or he tells her himself making her promise not to say a word to anyone and that could have caused his graying hair  hahah.  But Ren promises him she wont say anything and she keeps her word and he offers her vampire training because of it to  make sure she doesn’t even though she didn’t directly ask for it it’s kind of their thing the way they bond.  When that  time comes when the earth is thrown into turmoil Meg and the rest act a certain way and Ren shifts her focus toward her mother whom shes not as close to but still loves dearly this hurts her brother a bit whose basically her best friend A.J But Ren wants to try and save her Mother because she is aware of the type of man her father is.
And he tries so hard to keep that from Meg. But she knows too but she pushes it in the back of her mind because she knows He’d never hurt her.  But it is a reason why M.K has grey hair ;)   Of course it would be greyer in the story I keep multiple hair colors SO M.K becomes  Old snake lolol… and goes back and becomes younger again.
the other two Hunter  Fae and Archie who will be a toddler
I actually thought Hunter would also survive as he’s uh super hot when he grows up lol but he’d be a teen at the time and Ren would be an adult and Hunter would be some kind of ship mechanic.
( Archie  will be the first to go because I’m horrible hahaha then Fae.)  An Illness takes A.J and Meg and Fae first Archie.
I’m not sure about the pets I am thinking something that M.K puts them in cyro sleep or something as an animal lover I can’t bring myself to hurt an animal even if its pixelated.
But sometimes when situations are dire you can be tempted to eat somethings you shouldnt? of course I couldn’t but I heard stories of survival that were like that. Fucked up really.
But still exploring this part.I could abandon them which would just add the heart break or I make some colony that allows them all to thrive for a time they take them with them .  until something after they leave earth.
But an illness causes the Newfie to die or something due to lack of resources. later a warning to M.K that despite the fact they found this colony or something eventually hard ship strikes right? Nothing truly lasts forever. Maxx is put in cyro sleep  thats how he brought him back now.  Or He has the Newfie come back with him to the past. hence why he doesn’t age as well? So many possiblities.
So this illness or virus   which leads to fae then later A.J then  finally Meg dying I STILL DON’T KNOW IF I CAN DO THAT TO MY BABY M.K  maybe become ill im not sure It makes me want to cry just thinking about it.
Testing M.Ks tolerance more and more until after Meg dies he becomes a changed man full of guilt and hatred toward himself for a decision he made that he thought would help his family.  He becomes a cold hearted and distant pushing away his two remaining  kids and invested heavily in smuggling as well as likely drinking to the point where he’s trying to hurt himself where most would have poisoning. Acting like he just wants to die. He abandons them and goes into hiding for  long time.
Everything is routine to M.K like he feels nothing. He fights a good fight to defend his cargo from pirates because well it’s his job and it pays a pretty penny who doesn’t like money? But he’s killed alot of people good people. As he’s also an assassin of sorts maybe?  Or just looking out for his daughter ;) despite him becoming this ruthless monster.
I had an idea that M.K  he discovers a drug that slows or stops his healing factor  for a time like temporarily but eventually over time he becomes addicted to this because to him he sort of deserves to feel pain his healing factor is   thats sort of like wolverines but not as overkill  and if hes feeling weak it wont work as quickly  so he could allow himself to feel pain more intensely as well as  get hurt ..He can also attach limbs if he’s fast enough. Not many try to cut off his legs though  lmao. maybe a toe or something a finger a hand what ever an ear. Lazarus much?
Ren tries one last time to talk to him not having done so after her mother dies  and she finds blood soaked bandages  and blood everywhere or something and all these needles or something But he’s no where to be found at least so she thought M.K almost kills her not recognizing her at first  then  while nearly having a knife or something to her throat asks  How she found him.
And that’s when she says she’s there to kill him and he just laughs and says everyone wants my ass on a platter Im not surprised what’s holding you back then? Because I’m your daddy?
. Ren being the best Bounty hunter or ranger in the galaxy or something. She and her father  they fight or something
But she wins and while M.K destroyed alot of things including maybe killing her lover  or something  a friend  maybe theres some resentment to being abandoned by the only thing she and Hunter had left?
But she didn’t know the man her father killed wasn’t all he cracked up to be .or so was only interested in her because of him and was hoping she knew where he was she didn’t but wasn’t convinced also stole money from her and cheated on her. Maybe Ren knew she had to kill him  maybe she knew his location but knows she can’t kill him.
I also thought a brief arguement ensues with these so called good people her lover included her previous a male and I’m perhaps thinking her current being female.  And M.K kills them because  the man didn’t really love her and was just trying to get closer to him because the reward for him dead was hard to pass up. That though smart She was always so gullable and quite often when she thought she had thwarted her enemies it was M.K who did it all.  despite them being enemies He still looks out for her like I mentioned. And people literally shit thier pants when they run into him and if they want to do business with him well they better be paying good money for it. Or no deal. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if MK kills women too being that upset He goes back to his old ways.. And his sense of humor becomes twisted…  the hilarious thing is that as much as he loves sex I can’t see him even getting involved with someone and if he does it triggers some kind of memory or he feels dirty like a strange tick
I say this because after sex with Meg he always washes his hands like he feels dirty so I’m thinking he has this thing were he feels gross. But sex to him is a a free meal. of blood despite him liking food. food becomes scarce so He’s gotta go all antique vampire like now which is why he was able to survive him and Ren.
He doesn’t really like to leave a trail and he usually plucks off people or women that he feels  wouldn’t be missed.
and had a bad reputation and was sought after she spares his life after winning   He tells her that he was proud of her and she cracks a bit.  Because she sees a glimpse of her father she hadn’t seen in a long time. then says theres a way he could be happy again and it was classfied and hence that’s what you see on my blog. Memories of the past. I actually think I'd have Archie Survive he's so much like his mum I love him
