10 Easy-to-Use Eco-friendly Products

The truth is, if it’s single-use we probably shouldn't be buying it, especially when there are simple changes we can make that are actually inexpensive investments--investments that usually, pay for themselves.

So do your part, even small steps help, and swap out your daily habits with these eco-friendly products:

1. Reusable grocery bags - Each year, we use an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags, which causes a lot of avoidable waste. Using reusable grocery bags is a simple way to cut down on the habit without missing out on convenience. Some grocery stores even offer incentives for people who bring their own bags.

2. Dish towels & Cloth napkins - If you really need paper towels, consider using bamboo which is also reusable. Paper napkins may not cost a lot, but they do take a toll on the environment plus most napkins end up in landfills. You can help by reusing) cloth napkins and towels--which also feel luxurious, too!

3. Reusable sandwich wraps - Ever multiply the number of sandwich bags you use per child, per school lunch? The amount of single-use plastic waste adds up quickly. Reusable sandwich wraps, often made from recycled bottles, can completely eliminate the plastic pollution.

4. Reusable water bottles - It's easy to justify buying a pack of water and enjoying the convenience but each bottle that doesn't get recycled ends up in landfills, and worse in the ocean. 5. Dryer balls - Dryer balls can last for up to 1,000 loads or more thus saving you money on having to buy dryer sheets over and over again, as well as reduce electricity usage because dryer balls shorten the drying time.

6. Programmable thermostats - Experts say your thermostat controls half your energy bill, so if that’s true it's a great place to start if you want to reduce your AC/heating bill. Today’s programmable thermostats are easy to install and, by definition, can be programmed per your schedule which means you never have to wait for your house to heat up after coming home from work, or waste AC while running errands. Finally, when programmed properly a smart thermostat can save you up to $150 a year.

7. Ceiling fans - Air conditioning is expensive, so if you'd like to cut down on that cost, consider using a ceiling fan. A ceiling fan uses about as much energy as a 100-watt light bulb, and it can be strong enough to circulate air throughout a sizable room. For best results, turn off the AC when fans can do the work, and set the thermostat higher to offset the effect of the fans. By doing these simple tricks you can reduce as much as 15% off your bill.

8. LED light bulbs - LEDs use much less power and are up to 80% more efficient than traditional bulbs because 95% of the energy is converted into light, thus only 5% is wasted heat. LED bulbs also have multiple color options, are dimmable, and are WiFi accessible which mean they can be controlled with your devices.

9. Energy Star appliances - Nowadays "Energy Star" stickers are on many appliances and according to EnergyStar.gov, "More than 2,200 product models from more than 140 manufacturers were recognized as 'Energy Star Most Efficient' in 2017. Choosing an Energy Star appliance can offer a typical household about $575 on energy bills and still enjoy the quality and performance they expect." So next time a big appliance goes out, consider replacing it with an Energy Star for. Its efficiency can also reduce greenhouse-gas emissions while also reducing your energy bill.
