Uncanny X-Men #2 (1963)
Tumblr media
The X-Men #2 (Uncanny X-Men #2), “No One Can Stop the Vanisher” (November 1963)
Writer: Stan Lee Penciler: Jack Kirby Inker: Paul Reinman Letterer: Sam Rosen
Cover: The X-Men are still “the strangest super-heroes of all,” but now they’re also “in the sensational Fantastic Four style!” The issue blurb is a classic example of Stan Lee hyperbole: “The X-Men had to find out…how do you beat a mutant who is…unbeatable?!! A book-length Marvel classic: ‘Nothing Can Stop the Vanisher!’…”
Synopsis: The X-Men are responding to a summons from Professor X, which sparks a sort of race for them to get back to the school in their own ways:
Tumblr media
Beast climbs up a building and jumps onto a train, riding atop it to Westchester. Angel gets beset by handsy fangirls:
Tumblr media
He is rescued by Marvel Girl, who telekinetically lifts them atop a movie marquee, only to feel faint at overexertion; Angel carries her in his arms as he flies backto Westchester. Cyclops and Iceman encounter a construction site en route with a wall about to collapse on workmen, and Cyclops blasts it to powder, rescuing the men; Bobby then finds them transportation to the school in an ice cream truck.
All arrive and meet up with Professor X, who mentally projects a presentation about a villain called the Vanisher. He announces his intention to commit bank robbery in front of the police. As there’s no law against dressing up in a supervillain costume or in announcing the intention to commit a crime, there’s not much they can do at this point. The bank manager hands over the money at gunpoint, and the security guards pull their guns on the Vanisher after he puts his gun away to count the cash:
Tumblr media
He then vanishes into thin air, with the money.
The X-Men wonder if he’s a mutant, which leads to an impromptu training session when Iceman’s youthful enthusiasm gets out of hand. Professor X soon moves things to the Danger Room, where Angel is assigned to evade missiles until Xavier suddenly tells him to catch one, as if it’s the Vanisher. He attempts and fails, straining himself to the point he can’t stay aloft. Beast’s test involves mechanical hands trying to grab him, which he dodges with a backflip…into a hatch that’s opened in the floor:
Tumblr media
He catches himself on the sides of the chute, straining himself, and then propels himself back out.
Meanwhile, the Vanisher appears inside the Pentagon, confirming to the onlooking soldiers that he is indeed a mutant. He vanishes and reappears inside a heavily locked and guarded room nearby, where a general is reviewing “continental defense plans.” The Vanisher appears long enough to tell them that he will be stealing the plans within a few days, then vanishes again.
The criminal underworld starts flocking to the Vanisher after reading about him and his exploits in the newspapers; he announces that it is only fitting that Homo superior be served by Homo sapiens, and so he will allow them to become his lackeys:
Tumblr media
The X-Men continue their training, with Marvel Girl practicing holding up an enormous weighted ball telekinetically. She tires and begins struggling, to the point that she can no longer hold it up, and Cyclops comes to the rescue by blasting it into the wall. She thanks Cyclops profusely, and Iceman, claiming that there’s no need for such effusive thanks when any one of them could have saved her, sends a horse made of ice sliding under the “gallant Prince Charming.”
Professor Xavier contacts FBI Special Agent Fred Duncan telepathically to get an update on the Vanisher. On hearing of the Vanisher’s threats, Xavier mentions that he suspected that might be the next move, and calls the X-Men to depart for Washington D.C. within the hour. The X-Men fly to Washington in a “convertiplane” on loan from the Department of Special Affairs.
At the Pentagon, the plans are being guarded by four heavily-armed men. The Vanisher appears and vanishes with the plans before they can get to him, and reappears in the hallway outside, vanishing again as the guards there are holding him. He ends up on the steps outside, where he is confronted with the X-Men:
Tumblr media
Marvel Girl confirms that the Vanisher is a mutant. The Angel grabs the Vanisher and brings him into the air, but he disappears, dropping the suitcase with the plans in the process. The Beast catches the plans, only for the Vanisher to reappear and swipe them. Cyclops blasts the suitcase out of Vanisher’s hand, while Marvel Girl telekinetically plays keep-away with the suitcase until Vanisher sprays her with sleeping gas:
Tumblr media
Iceman covers the case with ice, but the Vanisher teleports away with the ice-covered suitcase, escaping entirely with the plans.
The X-Men are downcast at their failure, recognizing that they still need more training. The next day, newspaper headlines are talking about the X-Men’s failure to apprehend the Vanisher, with the public’s attitudes towards the X-Men correspondingly low and fear of the Vanisher rising.
Tumblr media
The television news reports that the Vanisher has demanded ten million dollars, tax-free, from the government as a price for not turning the continental defense plans over to “the communists.” The X-Men are alternately outraged at the Vanisher’s blackmail attempt and decrying their own shortcomings the previous day. The Angel and Iceman begin bickering, and Cyclops and the Beast are drawn in as well. Professor X demands their attention, and acknowledges that though the X-Men failed, they didn’t do badly, considering their youth and lack of experience. He believes it is time for him to enter the picture, to show that brute strength is not enough. The next time they go to Washington, he will accompany them. He shows them a strobe projection of the Vanisher photographed at 20,000 frames per second:
Tumblr media
Even at that high rate, he’s barely visible for a single frame as he vanishes; it’s almost impossible to analyze his power due to the speed of his disappearance.
The next day, where people in Washington are studying the same photos, Professor Xavier is in contact with the White House and gives them details of his proposed plan of action. On the lawn of the White House itself, the X-Men face down again with the Vanisher and his new army of accompanying goons:
Tumblr media
The X-Men stand aside to reveal Professor X, who gives the Vanisher one chance to surrender; otherwise, he says, he will counter with a force far greater and more terrible than the Vanisher’s power.
The Vanisher laughs at the “helpless human.” Professor X informs Vanisher that he is a mutant, and that he is already using his power. The Vanisher feels dread, and attempts to use his power to escape, but he can’t control his power. His fear increases, and soon he doesn’t realize what he’s doing there, who the man in front of him is, or even who he himself is:
Tumblr media
The Vanisher, whom Iceman compares to a helpless child, now claims weariness and wishes to rest, to learn who and what he is. His army of criminals, recognizing that their meal ticket is gone, go after the X-Men, but are soundly defeated. Iceman deflects bullets with an ice shield, the Beast grabs opponents’ guns as he hops around and kicks them into Iceman, who bends down so that they trip over him and fall into a pit dug by Cyclops’ eyebeams, which Iceman then covers with an ice lattice. Marvel Girl is impressed by the Professor’s power, which she dubs “uncanny,” and uses her telekinesis to threaten criminals with their own guns, while the Angel flies into criminals to bowl them over.
After the fight, a group of soldiers comes in, who warn Professor Xavier that he might be hurt, and request someone take him out of there. The X-Men volunteer, and talk about imagining if the soldiers knew that the Professor was the leader of the X-Men, or that it was he who defeated the Vanisher using what Professor X calls “the most magnificent power all of us possess…the power of the human brain!”
Next Issue: “The X-Men face the greatest danger of all, when…but see for yourself in X-Men #3…you’ll be glad you did!”
Tumblr media
First Appearances: This is the first appearance of the Vanisher, a recurring X-Men villain and occasional ally. The character would be expanded considerably over the years, but at this point he’s still (understandably) mostly a cipher.
It’s also the first appearance of Special Agent Fred Duncan, an FBI agent with the Department of Special Affairs who serves as the agency’s liaison with the X-Men:
Tumblr media
He will reappear semi-frequently through this first part of the initial run, at least until the X-Men’s formal affiliation with the FBI goes away when the decision is made to emphasize mutants’ status as societal outcasts (something a close affiliation with an organization as “establishment” as the FBI doesn’t quite work with). He has a psionic headband device given to him by Xavier to aid in telepathic communication, and the department loans the X-Men a McDonnell XV-1 convertiplane:
Tumblr media
This issue also is the first official appearance of the Danger Room (though we saw training machines in the previous episode that may have been part of it, here is where it gets formally named and introduced). It also calls Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters by name for the first time, though we obviously saw the school in the last issue.
X-Powers: The Beast has the agility and strength to run up a wall as long as the ridges are deep enough to sink his toes into. When he falls into a deep pit unexpectedly, he’s able to hold himself up by pressing his arms against the sides, and propel himself out of the pit with no leverage but his muscles. His agility allows him to evade armed men and steal their guns.
The Angel isn’t quite fast enough a flyer to catch a missile, and the strain of trying to do so exhausts him to the point where he can’t stay aloft. When this happens, Xavier checks his heart and blood pressure to ensure he’s fine.
At this point we begin to see the utter inconsistency of Marvel Girl’s powers during the Silver Age, with varying assessments of her telekinetic power that frequently don't agree with what we see in the actual use of those powers. She is able to lift a mob of six girls who are accosting the Angel, but he reminds her not to strain herself by picking up more than she can physically carry, and she is exhausted as a result. She has no problems with mental control of many small objects at once, redirecting Iceman’s ice pellets back toward him. She catches Beast when he catapults himself out of the floor hatch to set him down gently, with no problems whatsoever (even though presumably he’s larger than she can physically carry). She is also able to lift a massive ball, though she does tire enough that she needs Cyclops to save her using his power. She is skilled enough in her control that she can play keep-away with the Vanisher using the suitcase, but being hit with sleeping gas disrupts her control (which makes sense).
Cyclops’ eyebeams, at full intensity, can turn the bricks and mortar of a wall to a fine powder.
When Iceman shakes one of the construction workers’ hands, his glove freezes solid; another’s glove turns into ice cubes. It’s not stated, but it seems to be a conscious prank on Iceman’s part rather than an accident. He can also shoot rapid-fire “machine-gun ice pellets” and create a surprisingly flexible emergency grappling hook out of ice. He can cover an object in ice, making it too cold to handle, and he can send a fist made of ice (what Warren refers to a “corny snowball fist”) flying through the air. The ice shields he can create can be bulletproof.
Professor X can use his ability to “project” images on a blank wall (presumably he’s making them think they’re seeing these images). He can also use his powers to erase the Vanisher’s memories, to the point that he no longer remembers his own identity.
The Vanisher can disappear by teleporting himself to any place he can think of, “at unimaginable speed,” even when being held by someone.
X-Lore: The school’s name is given early on, as “Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.” Also on the school front, Iceman receives a demerit for talking during Professor X’s presentation.
We also see that the top half of the original X-Men uniform (the “vest”) is unattached to the trunks and can be pushed up to the neck, when Warren does so to let the Professor check him over. (Not sure whether this matters, but it seemed worth noting.)
Tumblr media
(Interestingly, the original has Warren with bare skin here instead, which makes less sense; presumably Marvel Unlimited recolored this in recognition that it's clearly a yellow vest worn over a blue undersuit, and so he should be wearing that underneath.)
We see Beast has similar problems with overconfidence as the Angel. He seems a little less short-tempered than in the previous issue, but he still seems far closer to Ben Grimm in personality than to who he’ll eventually be; his vocabulary is still fairly colloquial and he's definitely still got "lovable dumb muscle" elements to him.
Iceman is less immature than he was in the first issue but even more hotheaded (something else that will change some), and he spends as much time bickering with the Angel as he does with the Beast in this story.
We see the first example of Angel's and Cyclops' (and eventually several others’) nickname for Jean Grey, “Jeanie.” We also see the first of many examples of Iceman’s love for frozen sweets:
Tumblr media
Professor X is a Jerk: Wow, it took a whole two issues before some serious Professor X sociopathy comes out. The ending of the story involves Xavier wiping the Vanisher’s memory, including his memory of who he is. This is some serious mind-rape levels of telepathy going on here, and it seems like a particularly unethical use of his powers. (It seems especially unnecessary as before that, Xavier demonstrated that he could use his abilities to just prevent Vanisher from using his powers. If he can do that, was the total mindwipe really needed?) Marvel Girl is the only one who seems to show any discomfort or surprise at Professor X’s course of action:
Tumblr media
The Swinging Sixties: This is clearly set during the height of the Cold War, with the threats to deliver the “continental defense plans” to vaguely mentioned “communists.” The former presumably has some relation to CONAD, or the Continental Air Defense Command, which was tasked with air defense from Soviet missiles for the continental U.S. The latter is presumably some flavor of Soviets.
Real (and Real Fictional) People: Marvel Girl tells the mob of “chickadees” that it “isn’t Sadie Hawkins Day!!”
Tumblr media
While Sadie Hawkins is fictional, presumably the comic strip she appeared in, Li’l Abner, and its creator, Al Capp, exist in Marvel-616.
Jean also telekinetically lifts said mob onto a marquee for the film A Teen-Ager’s Tears:
Tumblr media
The film appears to be fictional, but it is listed as starring the very real 1960s actress Tuesday Weld (well, “Tues[…] Wel[…]” but that’s clearly who it is meant to be).
When the Beast grabs the suitcase of the plans, he says he’s a hero, and he’ll probably be invited on the Ed Sullivan Show:
Tumblr media
The Fairer Sex: Jean seems at least a little smug at the fact that Warren needs her help to repel his fangirls. Warren calls her “beautiful” and “gorgeous,” Cyclops calls her “gorgeous” and “little lady.” She calls them “boys.”
Horny Teens: That crowd of girls at the beginning is really into the Angel, to a disturbing level. He complains when Jean removes them, saying he was beginning to enjoy it.
Jean seems to already be into Cyclops, giving him copious thanks for saving her in a way she doesn’t for Warren. Bobby seems to be at least a little jealous of the two:
Tumblr media
Well, It’s An (Artistic) Choice: The Vanisher’s costume is interesting and distinctive, but it’s also a little ridiculous:
Tumblr media
The neckpiece, which looks like a Spider-Man-patterned ruff from the front and a massive cobra hood with scales from the side, is especially odd. Combine that with the tunic top and pants (also scaled) and the purple cape and gloves and boots, and you end up with an outfit that’s memorable but not entirely in a good way. Interestingly, Marvel Unlimited has recolored the costume to be primary red and purple, much like Magneto; the original has both in shades closer to magenta (compare to the MU version of the same frame above):
Tumblr media
Jack Kirby came up with some bangers when it comes to costume design (even one just last issue using a similar color scheme!), but this ain’t it, I’m afraid.
There are several points in the issue where Xavier is drawn with an almost comically oversized noggin, to the point he verges on looking like a stereotypical grey alien:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s not quite in M.O.D.O.K. or the Leader territory, but he’s definitely in the same ballpark as the Watcher and Hector Hammond.
Head-Scratchers: It’s very important to keep the location of the school, and that the X-Men are based out of it, secret. Iceman is quite happy to direct the ice cream truck to bring him and Cyclops, in their X-Men identities, to the very school itself.
Similarly, Professor Xavier’s identity as the leader of the X-Men doesn’t seem particularly secret, as the various governmental entities seem to know who he is, and he appears on the White House lawn to confront the Vanisher with no mask or other identity concealment.
When redirecting Bobby’s ice pellets, Jean once again refers to her ability as “the mental power of teleportation”:
Tumblr media
It seems more egregious in this issue since we have an example of someone with the actual ability of teleportation in the Vanisher. (This one has not been corrected on Marvel Unlimited.)
Finally, what happened to the continental defense plans? Do they ever even recover them? They have no clue who else the Vanisher might have shown them to during the time he was in possession of them, so any idea of them remaining top-secret seems like it’s probably out the window, and the only person whom we know knew their location—the Vanisher—now doesn’t know much of anything. I guess we do assume that the “communists” didn’t get them, though.
Other Comments: It’s interesting that the second X-Men story is also their first failure, with Professor X himself having to step in and salvage the mission. It’s also interesting that Professor X’s ethical dubiousness, which will become a huge part of his later character, is present so early, even if it’s not recognized as such by the narrative. The Vanisher is another long-time, off-and-on X-Men villain, though he makes less good use of the red-and-purple color scheme than Magneto did. We also see the X-Men as much more popular and establishment figures, with Warren's fangirls and their direct link with the FBI, than they would later be; it makes sense that these would go when they decided to play up the “mutants as minority outsiders” theme, which they’re definitely not going for here (at this point it’s more of a “mutants are secret supermen” theme, with even the X-Men talking patronizingly about Homo sapiens in the last issue). While it’s not nearly as precedent-setting or iconic as the first issue, this is definitely expanding on that world and starting to shape the characters into something closer to who they’ll eventually be.

Mein 1802 in Erkrath geborener Urgroßvater Wilhelm Korn heiratete 1830 die Bauerstochter A.Chr.
Mens boxer briefs fruit of the loom how to#
If I had any negatives with this boxer brief, it’s that they could feel softer to the touch. For their value, airiness, and fit, the Adidas Performance boxer brief is worth every penny. While sitting in my office chair for work, I found the fabric to be highly breathable-a true blessing. They’re made of a stretchy polyester/spandex material that wicked away moisture and clung to my legs without feeling too tight or too loose. They didn’t bunch up while I walked around-even on the most humid days-they never rode up my legs while I worked out, and the waistband stayed put all day. During my time wearing them, I I hardly noticed I had them on, no matter my daily activities-and this is not something I could say across the board. Of all the boxer briefs we tested over the five months, no pair was quite as versatile, comfortable, and durable as the Adidas Performance. These are the best boxer briefs for men we tested ranked, in order: For a premium upgrade, the Ex Officio Give-N-Go 2.0 ( available at ExOfficio) offers a snug design, quick-drying and breathable mesh fabric, and odor-proofing that makes it great for travel. The Adidas Men’s Sport Performance Boxer Briefs ( available at Amazon) was our top pick for its versatility, moisture-wicking ability, and comfortable fit. To find the best boxer briefs, we put 13 highly rated pairs to the test. Many brands now make underwear using fabrics other than the typical cotton, blending materials nylon for durability and moisture-wicking and super-soft micro modal (a type of rayon) for all-day comfort. Snug in the leg and nurturing of the package, boxer briefs give you the best of both worlds. They are the nation's two largest underwear makers. There are many styles of men’s underwear, but none offer supportive comfort quite like the boxer brief. A: Some prefer Fruit Of The Loom over Hanes. The Padre Pio Miracle that Led to His Beatification
During his lifetime, Padre Pio performed a large number of miraculous cures. The following miracle is connected to Padre Pio’s beatification, meaning it was approved by a Diocesan Scientific Board, a Diocesan Theological Tribunal, a Vatican Scientific Board and a Vatican Tribunal.
Consiglia De Martino discovers her tumor
The miracle used for St. Padre Pio’s beatification process was the case of Consiglia De Martino, a married woman with three children from Salerno, Italy. On October 31, 1995, Consiglia began to feel acute pain, followed by a very fast-moving growth in her neck. When it quickly reached the size of a grapefruit, her husband drove her to the Riuniti Hospital in Salerno.
After ordering two CAT- scans, the examining physician determined that Consiglia’s thoracic duct in her neck had ruptured, forming a huge lump containing approximately two liters of lymphatic fluid. Consiglia was told that she would need to undergo a very difficult and complicated surgical intervention as soon as possible. The surgery was scheduled for November 3.
Padre Pio miraculously heals Consiglia
Consiglia immediately began to pray to Padre Pio. She phoned his monastery at San Giovanni Rotondo where she spoke with Fra Modestino Fucci — a brother to whom Padre Pio had promised to help with intercessory prayers. Fra Modestino Fucci prayed at the tomb of Padre Pio on November 1st and 2nd. During that time, prior to the surgical intervention, physicians gave no medical treatment to Consiglia.
On November 2, Consiglia noticed a marked decrease in pain followed by a rapid diminution of the swelling in her neck. The following day Consiglia was examined by physicians prior to the scheduled surgery. They immediately noticed the disappearance of the swelling in her neck and ordered x-rays of that area as well as her abdomen.
The x-ray showed the following: the complete cure of the rupture of the thoracic duct (the largest lymphatic vessel of the lymphatic system) which caused the lymphatic spilling; the complete disappearance of the large 2-quart liquid deposit in Consiglia’s neck; and the complete disappearance of other liquid deposits in her abdomen.
The surgery was cancelled, and a cat scan on November 6 confirmed the results of the x-ray taken on November 3. Evidently, Consiglia had been immediately and inexplicably cured of a complex and dangerous condition — without any medical intervention whatsoever.
She attributed the cure to Padre Pio to whom she, her family, and Fra Modestino had been praying.
The Miracle is attributed to Padre Pio by the Vatican
Successive examinations of Consiglia showed no long-term effects of her prior condition.
The diocesan investigation of the miracle took place from July 1996 to June 1997. Two ex officio experts and a medical consultant studied the published documentation and unanimously declared the “extraordinary and scientifically inexplicable nature of the cure.”
On April 30, 1998, the 5-member Medical Committee of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (CCS) at the Vatican declared unanimously that “the healing of the traumatically ruptured thoracic duct of Consiglia De Martino on November 3, 1995 is scientifically inexplicable.”
After the positive conclusion of the Medical Committee, the assembly of Cardinals and Bishops Members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the Consiglia De Martino case as a miracle on October 20, 1998.

Know More About Andorra Flag
Ghana Flag Colors
Flags, Icons & Currency Of Andorra Their child, Ermessenda, wed the count of Foix, Roger-Bernard II. Roger-Bernard II and Ermessenda shared rule over Andorra with the bishop of Urgell. Influenced by the Aquitanian, Basque and Iberian languages, the citizens developed some existing toponyms. Early works as well as documents associating with this team of people return to the 2nd century BC by the Greek author Polybius in his Backgrounds throughout the Punic Battles. Other archaeological down payments include the Tombs of Segudet and Feixa del Moro (Sant Julià de Lòria) both dated in 4900-- 4300 BC as an instance of the Urn society in Andorra. The model of little settlements started to evolve to a complicated urbanism during the Bronze Age.
Tumblr media
Although the national flag is stated to date from 1866, yet the layout was standardized in July 1993 when Andorra joined the United Nations.
The Law consists of an Annex that specifies the typical coat of arms and also the typical flag of the Principality of Andorra.
Andorra is not a member state of the European Union, but the euro is its main currency.
Juan Benlloch y Vivó, a former Bishop of Urgell as well as ex lover officio of the Co-Prince of Andorra, penned the verses (which were composed in a first-person point of view), with Enric Marfany Bons, a priest making up the songs. The national anthem was formally embraced on September 8th 1921, which additionally commemorated Andorra's national day. The verses to the anthem reference crucial occasions in the culture as well as the background of Andorra, consisting of the Carolingian Realm's heritage. On the same day that the anthem was officially embraced, it was sung at Andorra's basilica for the first time during the nation's National Day. Incidentally, the feast day of Our Lady of Meritxell falls on September 8th, Andorra's tutelary saint that was included in the verses. The verses of El Gran Carlemany are told in a first-person perspective and showcase a short account of the history of  Andorra Flag.
Andorra Flag Supply Pictures, Vectors, As Well As Pictures Are Offered Nobility
The flag of Andorra was lifted up for the first time in today's pattern? Three vertical red stripes in blue, yellow and also red, in the yellow red stripe the layer of arms? Ostensibly it was designed by emperor Napoleon III. The flag signs up with the colors blue and red, two colors of the French tricolor, as well as the colors yellow as well as red, the Spanish colors.
Is Andorra a safe country?
Travellers should also keep in mind the heightened threat of terrorism in Europe. Overall, it is a very safe country and visits for the most part are safe. One of the biggest crime problems in Andorra is the trafficking of illegal substances.
Andorra has a mixed financial system in which the economic climate includes a range of personal liberty, combined with central economic planning as well as government law. Double-stitched all over the edge as well as reinforced by canvas header and also two brass grommets. You will totally appreciate the workmanship and top quality of this flag. These totally published lightweight polyester flags are a prominent choice where economic situation is necessary. They fly in the slightest wind and also deal superb color retention. The coat of arms may be accompanied by the adage "Virtus Unita Fortior''. The layer of arms might be surrounded by an aureole or a parchment or crowned with the lordly emblems.
What is the ugliest nationality?
Irish men have been branded the "undisputed ugliest" in the world by a contentious dating website that only allows attractive people to join. A new poll by picky international dating site BeautifulPeople.com has seen Irish males slip to the foot of a table of the world's most attractive nationalities.

Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
Tumblr media
The X-Men #1 (Uncanny X-Men #1), “X-Men” (September 1963)
Synopsis: In a ritzy private school in Westchester County, New York, wheelchair-bound teacher Charles Xavier (also known as Professor X) calls his students—who go by the codenames Cyclops, Iceman, the Angel, and the Beast—to class using only the power of his thoughts.
Tumblr media
The students bicker even as they prepare to be put through their paces using a series of training machines built to help them build control over their powers. After all four complete their tests (and some tacitly teacher-approved roughhousing), Professor Xavier informs them that a new pupil is currently approaching the school—a young woman, specifically. She complains of the mysteriousness of Professor Xavier’s message, that she could tell no one but her parents and that it didn’t describe the course of study.
We learn the names of the existing X-Men: Hank McCoy (the Beast), Bobby Drake (Iceman), “Slim” Summers (Cyclops), and Warren Worthington III (the Angel):
Tumblr media
The new student is introduced as Jean Grey, who will be known as Marvel Girl. Hank, Warren, and “Slim” all flirt blatantly with Jean, while Bobby doesn’t see the big deal. Jean takes them aback by displaying her mutant power to move objects with her mind (including lifting Hank into the air and spinning him rapidly when he tries to steal a kiss from her). Xavier explains his mutant ability, and talks about the importance for mutants to stay under the radar but also to use their powers to benefit mankind. However, not all mutants are so benevolent, and the job of the X-Men is to protect mankind from those “evil mutants.”
Meanwhile, the mutant Magneto is planning to attack Cape Citadel. He’s used his powers to ensure the failure of six different missile launches over months, but he now decides to attack the launch site in person. The military is helpless against Magneto and his magnetic powers, and he’s able to walk right in without being stopped and claim Cape Citadel for himself.
Professor X calls the students to action and sends them to Cape Citadel to face Magneto, as a baptism of fire. The newly-revealed X-Men request that the military hold their fire for fifteen minutes while they go into action to stop Magneto.
Tumblr media
Cyclops blasts through the magnetic field around the base using his powers, allowing them entrance, but nearly goes unconscious doing so. Magneto fires missiles at the X-Men, but the Angel dodges them in flight, Iceman freezes all but one with ice grenades, and the last one is grabbed by the Beast with his feet and hurled into the sea by Marvel Girl. The Angel confronts Magneto only to be attacked by magnetized debris; the rest of the team arrives and extricates him, only to have Magneto send a tank of ignited rocket fuel at them. The X-Men survive thanks to Iceman’s igloo shield and Cyclops’s energy beam creating a tunnel under the blast. Magneto escapes, holding the X-Men back using a magnetic field; by the time they break through it, he’s gone.
The X-Men return to a thankful military, their fifteen minutes not yet up. The story ends with them flying home on Professor Xavier’s remote-controlled private jet, and the narrator tells us to check out issue #2 of X-Men, “the strangest super-heroes of all!”
Tumblr media
First Appearances: Whooo, where to start?
Obviously it’s the first appearance of the X-Men as a team, as well as of the individual members: Charles Xavier/Professor X, Scott (here called only “Slim”) Summers/Cyclops, Warren Worthington III/the Angel, Bobby Drake/Iceman, Hank McCoy/the Beast, and the newly-recruited Jean Grey/Marvel Girl. It’s also the first appearance of the Westchester County mansion that serves as their (still unnamed) school, of their (still unnamed) specialized training space, and of Professor Xavier’s Rolls Royce and private jet.
It’s also the first appearance of the recurring X-Men nemesis, Magneto. Name and past still unknown at this point, all we learn about him (aside from his iconic red-and-purple fashion sense) is that he’s a mutant with powerful magnetic abilities who believes homo superior to be, well…superior to homo sapiens, and believes they should rule these lesser beings:
Tumblr media
Finally, the military missile base that’s introduced here, Cape Citadel, will appear again much later in the X-Men comics.
X-Powers: Professor X can read and send thoughts with his mind. He can also remotely control his private jet from the ground using “thought impulses.” Interestingly, at this point Xavier congratulates them on “mastering” reading his thoughts perfectly, seemingly indicating that his telepathy requires a certain level of active training on someone’s part to hear his thoughts properly (something which definitely doesn’t hold true as time goes on).
Tumblr media
During his test, the Beast demonstrates that he can grab a wire with his toes and not just hang from the wire, but spin around it so quickly he becomes near-impossible to shoot at. He also catapults himself off the wire and through a midair hoop. Finally, he balances on a rod using one finger, maintains his balance as the tension slackens and the rod sags, and finally leaps off just before the rod snaps back. He is later able to grab a missile in motion, stopping it entirely, using only his feet.
The Angel’s test involves dodging jets of flame and massive serrated clamps, flying through a moving turbine/spanner, and unexpectedly having to stay aloft when hit with a sudden concussion of sound, beginning to master a hovering maneuver. He also usually keeps his wings bound in a harness to keep his mutant power hidden. Later, he manages to dodge multiple missiles through fancy flying.
Iceman’s test involves a bowling ball being unexpectedly thrown at him by the Beast, which Iceman handily redirects using an ice shield right back at the Beast. Later, he throws ice grenades at missiles to prevent them from exploding and knock out their guidance systems, and creates an ice igloo shield to protect the team from an explosion of rocket fuel.
Cyclops’s test is to attack Iceman and the Beast unexpectedly, putting them out of action without causing serious injury. It’s revealed that he can use the lever at the side of his head-shield to widen or narrow his visor to weaken or strengthen his beam. He blasts the Beast with his eye-beams, nearly knocking him through the wall; by the time he turns his attention to Iceman, the latter has a large cube-shaped ice shield that delays Cyclops’s blast but can’t withstand it. Later, he uses his eye-beam at maximum power—something he can only do for a few seconds—to break Magneto’s magnetic field barrier. He has the control to blast away metal junk magnetized around the Angel without harming him, and he can also create a tunnel under the launch facility’s surface using his blast.
In her initial meeting with the X-Men, Jean moves a chair, a book, and Hank with her mind. She later lifts multiple soldiers out of the way with her mind, and telekinetically hurls a missile into the sea.
When they get ready, we see that Angel’s wings are mostly bound in a harness with restraining belts when he looks “normal,” a feeling that he doesn’t enjoy:
Tumblr media
Magneto can feel waves of pure magnetic energy emanating from himself when he uses his power, energy he directs toward a missile to make it falter and crash into the ocean. He can also control and fire metal guns and tanks using his power, and he can magnetize dust particles into a giant mid-air message, a la the Wicked Witch of the West:
Tumblr media
He also has an energizer to increase his magnetic impulses, whih he can use to lift the head of a missile silo and fire the missile into the sea. He can also prevent soldiers from lifting their guns and alter his magnetic waves to create a shield that repels anything within range or a rope or small barrier to bind people (which isn't an ability he has in more recent comics, though he can achieve the same effect in other ways that are more traditional uses of magnetism). When his magnetic barrier is broken by Cyclops, he is weakened and staggered. He can magnetically hurl metal objects. At the end, Magneto reveals he can fly using magnetic repulsion.
X-Lore: “Slim” is shown to be serious and overly protective of Xavier. He’s clearly interested in Jean, and flirts with her in a blatant but fairly gentlemanlike way.
Hank is less gentlemanlike, attempting to steal a kiss from Jean in a way that seems uncharacteristic of whom he would later become:
Tumblr media
Hank in general is a good example of Early Installment Weirdness; he and Bobby are very much set up as bickering characters in the mold of Ben Grimm/the Thing and Johnny Storm/Human Torch from the Fantastic Four. Pretty much all of Hank’s lines would seem entirely fitting coming from Ben Grimm, short-tempered and tough-talking. This will later change considerably, through Hank’s erudition and vocabulary being emphasized and making him more even-tempered.
Warren is overconfident in his abilities, and this hinders him; he manages to overcome a sonic attack in training, but the only thing he does during the actual fight is evade missiles until Iceman can save him and then go after Magneto solo, which gets him trapped in magnetic debris. (Admittedly, his powers aren't the most combat-oriented, but still.) He’s also very flirty with Jean.
Bobby is revealed to be the youngest of the X-Men here, at sixteen (and he’s “a couple years younger than the others,” placing them closer to eighteen). He doesn’t like being treated more gently than the others by Xavier because of his age. He’s also a jokester who enjoys using his powers to prank and amuse. Unlike his fellow students, he doesn’t see the big deal in having a girl arrive, and talks about how he’s glad he’s not a “wolf” like his classmates. (That said, there is a line that seems to come from him about Jean being “poured into that uniform.”)
Jean seems to enjoy being mysterious and has a slightly mischievous side, telling the boys that they’ll learn more about her in time and enjoying discomfiting them with her telekinetic chair pull:
Tumblr media
Professor Xavier is the child of parents who worked on the first A-Bomb project. The idea of mutants are introduced, and that they’re different from regular humans, who fear and distrust mutants. This idea won’t become truly central to the X-Men for quite a while yet, but the germ of it is there, even this far back.
Pre-Retcons: Magneto is the biggest example here, with no signs of the complex, sympathetic villain he’ll later become. He’s a rather cartoonish villain of the sort typical in the Silver Age. There’s also no sign of the complicated frenemyship between him and Xavier that has become such a large part of their characters in the decades since; there is, in fact, no sign that they even know each other or have ever met. Unlike his later self, Magneto shows no qualms about trying to kill teenagers in multiple ways: specifically with five Hunter missiles and then with a flaming tank of jet fuel.
Tumblr media
Professor Xavier himself mentions that he is in a wheelchair because of a “childhood accident,” something that will again be retconned later to injury as an adult. He also suggests that he might be the first mutant, something that is definitely not true and which later flashback stories will make clear he would have known by this point (if nothing else, his eventual past with Magneto and the Shadow King would suggest he knew better).
The relationship between Xavier and Jean is also very different; later stories would retcon in an existing relationship and mentorship between the two dating back to the awakening of Jean’s powers after the death of her friend Annie, but here Jean is clearly meeting Xavier for the first time.
The personalities of and the friendship between Hank and Bobby are presented very similarly to those of Ben Grimm/the Thing and Johnny Storm/the Human Torch (from the Fantastic Four), with the Beast as the irascible big guy and Iceman as the immature jokester. While Iceman will continue with pranks and such for a while, his and Beast’s relationship will mellow out considerably, and much sooner than Ben’s and Johnny’s will.
Bobby will, many decades later, come out as gay. While future issues will make him actively interested in women, this introduction to the character interestingly has him as the only guy mostly not expressing interest in the pretty new female student. (Whether this is meant to imply homosexuality or immaturity is up for debate.)
Professor X is a Jerk: While he does do some things during training that could seem jerkish—specifically having the Beast and Cyclops attack their teammates without warning—it does seem like good training protocol, to help them get used to dealing with unexpected attacks.
However, Xavier does stop the X-Men’s roughhousing with “a sharp commanding thought” that leaves his students “stunned by the force and explosive power of Professor Xavier’s mental command,” which seems like it’s signalling an emergency…only he just wants to let them know that Jean is arriving. (Fairly mild X-Jerkery, but definitely unnecessary on his part.)
Tumblr media
The Swinging Sixties: Fashion-wise, there’s definitely some iconic looks—Xavier’s green suit, Jean’s blue scarf/jacket/hat ensemble, and of course the famous OG costumes for the X-Men and Magneto—but also some unfortunate looks that have not aged well. Hank’s plum suit seems garish even on the original muted newsprint, let alone in the crystal-clear colors of the omnibus version, and the less said about “Slim”’s yellow v-neck sweater and bow tie look, the better:
Tumblr media
(They've been recolored for Marvel Unlimited as seen in pictures earlier in the post, and look much less eye-blinding but also less endearingly Sixties.)
One of the X-Men (probably Hank or Bobby, judging by the dialogue) mentions that Xavier’s Rolls Royce must have “taken a heap of green stamps to by [sic]":
Tumblr media
This refers to S&H Green Stamps, a line of trading stamps popular from the turn of the century through the 1980s. They were given with purchases at gas stations, supermarkets, and other stores that could be redeemed for products from a catalog. The 1960s were the height of their wide popularity. A small number of stores continued giving stamps into the 1990s. The company eventually went online and offered “Greenpoints” instead, redeemable only at a few stores; in 2020, the program was entirely discontinued and no Green Stamps or Greenpoints could be redeemed.
Slang-wise, Jean is apparently “a real living doll,” according to “Slim.” Warren also calls her a doll later, as does someone while they’re on the plane.
Real People: Marvel Girl says that whoever designed the X-Men uniform could have given Christian Dior a run for his money:
Tumblr media
Your mileage may vary on whether this is true.
The Fairer Sex: Marvel Girl acquits herself in battle at least as well as the Angel and the Beast, which is a nice change from other Marvel superheroines of the era (it helps that her power lends itself much better to active participation than the Invisible Girl's invisibility or the Wasp's shrinking). Her fellow X-Men (Iceman mostly excepted) seem to treat her as a potential object of romantic affection far more than a teammate at this point, though. It’s interesting that even as late as the jet en route to Cape Citadel, the narration refers to “the X-Men and Marvel Girl,” implying that she’s not 100% part of the group yet.
Horny Teens: All the male students with the partial exception of Iceman.
Rich People: The X-Men all attend “an exclusive private school in New York’s Westchester County.” Professor X has a specially-built Rolls Royce with tinted windows and a remote-controlled private jet.
Well, It’s An (Artistic) Choice: Iceman is sliding around and down what seems meant to be a fireman’s pole made of ice the first time we see him. However, since it barely reaches above Iceman’s height (and certainly not up to the ceiling or the next floor up), it comes off as closer to a stripper pole. (Presumably this is not what Kirby was going for.)
Head-Scratchers: Marvel Girl calls her power “teleportation,” though it is clearly not teleportation, but telekinesis.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, while the original comic and the omnibus have the above, the Marvel Unlimited version has corrected this:
Tumblr media
(The narration does use the correct term later in the issue, when referring to Jean diverting the missile into the sea “using her amazing telekinetic power.”)
Tumblr media
Other Comments: The comic that launched a thousand spinoffs, this is the first issue of X-Men (later Uncanny X-Men). As an introduction to the cast, it works well; while characterization will definitely evolve considerably for all the characters (but especially Hank and Magneto), it sets each of them up nicely. Only Jean still seems like a bit of a cipher—which works for the story, as the existing team members don’t know her yet either. While it certainly has flaws, they are flaws that are pretty common to Silver Age Marvel in general rather than to this book in particular; as a first issue, it makes you want to read more, which means I would declare it a pretty unqualified success at what it's trying to do.

Book Of Genesis - From The Latin Vulgate (1859 - Haydock Translation of The Roman Catholic Bible) - Chapter 23
INTRODUCTION.
The Hebrews now entitle all the Five Books of Moses, from the initial words, which originally were written like one continued word or verse; but the Sept. have preferred to give the titles the most memorable occurrences of each work. On this occasion, the Creation of all things out of nothing, strikes us with peculiar force. We find a refutation of all the heathenish mythology, and of the world’s eternity, which Aristotle endeavoured to establish. We behold the short reign of innocence, and the origin of sin and misery, the dispersion of nations, and the providence of God watching over his chosen people, till the death of Joseph, about the year 2369 (Usher) 2399 (Sal. and Tirin) B.C. 1631. We shall witness the same care in the other Books of Scripture, and adore his wisdom and goodness in preserving to himself faithful witnesses, and a true Holy Catholic Church, in all ages, even when the greatest corruption seemed to overspread the land. H.
—————————-
This Book is so called from its treating of the Generation, that is, of the Creation and the beginning of the world. The Hebrews call it Bereshith, from the word with which it begins. It contains not only the History of the Creation of the World, but also an account of its progress during the space of 2369 years, that is, until the death of Joseph.
The additional Notes in this Edition of the New Testament will be marked with the letter A. Such as are taken from various Interpreters and Commentators, will be marked as in the Old Testament. B. Chapter 23
Sara's death and burial in the field bought of Ephron.
[1] And Sara lived a hundred and twenty-seven years. Vixit autem Sara centum viginti septem annis.
[2] And she died in the city of Arbee which is Hebron, in the land of Chanaan: and Abraham came to mourn and weep for her.
[3] And after he rose up from the funeral obsequies, he spoke to the children of Heth, saying: Cumque surrexisset ab officio funeris, locutus est ad filios Heth, dicens :
[4] I am a stranger and sojourner among you: give me the right of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead. Advena sum et peregrinus apud vos : date mihi jus sepulchri vobiscum, ut sepeliam mortuum meum.
[5] The children of Heth answered, saying: Responderunt filii Heth, dicentes :
[6] My Lord, hear us, thou art a prince of God among us: bury thy dead in our principal sepulchres: and no man shall have power to hinder thee from burying thy dead in his sepulchre. Audi nos, domine : princeps Dei es apud nos : in electis sepulchris nostris sepeli mortuum tuum, nullusque te prohibere poterit quin in monumento ejus sepelias mortuum tuum.
[7] Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, to wit the children of Heth: Surrexit Abraham, et adoravit populum terrae, filios videlicet Heth :
[8] And said to them: If it please your soul that I should bury my dead, hear me, and intercede for me to Ephron the son of Seor. dixitque ad eos : Si placet animae vestrae ut sepeliam mortuum meum, audite me, et intercedite pro me apud Ephron filium Seor :
[9] That he may give me the double cave, which he hath in the end of his field: for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me before you, for a possession of a burying place. ut det mihi speluncam duplicem, quam habet in extrema parte agri sui : pecunia digna tradat eam mihi coram vobis in possessionem sepulchri.
[10] Now Ephron dwelt in the midst of the children of Heth. And Ephron made answer to Abraham in the hearing of all that went in at the gate of the city, saying: Habitabat autem Ephron in medio filiorum Heth.
[11] Let it not be so, my lord, but do thou rather hearken to what I say: The field I deliver to thee, and the cave that is therein, in the presence of the children of my people, bury thy dead.
[12] Abraham bowed down before the people of the land, Adoravit Abraham coram populo terrae.
[13] And he spoke to Ephron, in the presence of the people: I beseech thee to hear me: I will give money for the field: take it, and so I will bury my dead in it.
[14] And Ephron answered: Responditque Ephron :
[15] My lord, hear me. The ground which thou desirest, is worth four hundred sicles of silver: this is the price between me and thee: but what is this? bury thy dead. Domine mi, audi me : terra, quam postulas, quadringentis siclis argenti valet : istud est pretium inter me et te : sed quantum est hoc? sepeli mortuum tuum.
[16] And when Abraham had heard this, he weighed out the money that Ephron had asked, in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred sicles of silver of common current money.
[17] And the field that before was Ephron's, wherein was the double cave, looking towards Mambre, both it and the cave, and all the trees thereof in all its limits round about, Confirmatusque est ager quondam Ephronis, in quo erat spelunca duplex, respiciens Mambre, tam ipse, quam spelunca, et omnes arbores ejus in cunctis terminis ejus per circuitum,
[18] Was made sure to Abraham for a possession, in the sight of the children of Heth, and of all that went in at the gate of his city. Abrahae in possessionem, videntibus filiis Heth, et cunctis qui intrabant portam civitatis illius.
[19] And so Abraham buried Sara his wife, in a double cave of the field, that looked towards Mambre, this is Hebron in the land of Chanaan.
[20] And the field was made sure to Abraham, and the cave that was in it, for a possession to bury in, by the children of Heth.
Commentary:
Ver. 1. Sara. She is the only woman whose age the Scripture specifies; a distinction which her exalted dignity and faith deserved. Gal. iv. 23. Heb. xi. 11. She was a figure of the Christian Church. C.
Ver. 2. City. Heb. Cariath arbah, Jos. xiv. 15. --- Which is Hebron. Serarius thinks it took its name from the society (cherber) between Abraham and the princes of the city. Hebron the son of Caleb possessed it afterwards. --- Came from Bersabee, (G. xxii. 19.) or to the place where the corpse lay, at Arbee, which signifies four; as Adam, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, with their four wives, reposed there. C. --- And weep. In the middle of this word, in the printed Hebrew, there is left a small c; whence the Rabbins ridiculously infer, that Abraham wept but a short time. But the retaining of greater, less, suspended and inverted letters in the Hebrew Bible, can be attributed to no other cause than a scrupulous veneration even for the faults of transcribers. Kennicott
Ver. 3. Obsequies, or solemn mourning, accompanied with prayer. Acts viii. 2. Matt. xii. The Jews are still accustomed to say, when they bury their dead, "Ye fathers, who sleep in Hebron, open to him the gates of Eden;" herein agreeing with the Catholic doctrine, as they did in the days of Judas the Machabee. H.
Ver. 6. Prince of God, powerful and holy, and worthy of respect. H. --- A great prince. See Acts vii. 5. where S. Stephen says, that God did not give Abraham a foot of land, meaning as an inheritance; and that Abraham bought this double cave, for a sepulchre, of the sons of Hemor, the son of Sichem; (C.) from which latter he seems to derive the name of the place, which is here called Hebron. H. --- Nothing is more common, than for men and places to have two names; though some think, the name of Abraham has been inserted in the Acts by a mistake of the copyists, when Jacob was meant. See G. xxxiii. 19. C.
Ver. 7. Bowed down to the people. Adoravit, literally, adored. But this word here, as well as in many other places in the Latin Scriptures, is used to signify only an inferior honour and reverence paid to men, expressed by a bowing down of the body.
Ver. 16. Sicles. About £50. H. --- It was no simony to buy land for a sepulchre, as it was not blessed. M. --- Current money, was such as passed among merchants, though probably not yet coined in any part of the world; and therefore we find, that Abraham and others weigh the pieces of silver or gold. In this manner were bargains concluded before witnesses, who in those days supplied the want of writings and lawyers. C.

Introduction to X-Officio
This is planned to be a series of (hopefully) regularly updated review/notes posts of the various X-Men comic books, in chronological order, as I read through them from the beginning onwards. As a long-time X-Men fan (since the early 90s), now that I am an actual grownup with a grownup job and salary, I’ve been buying a lot of the X-Men and spinoff omnibuses (omnibi?) as they’ve released. I have been meaning to work my way through them, but I’ve only gotten around to reading one or two fully, I think. So I’m making it a project to work my way through the X-Men comics, both those new to me and those I’m rereading, in chronological order. Hence this tumblr blog!
(As for the name, I basically looked up Latin phrases beginning with “ex” so that I could make an “X-[ ]” pun...all the really appropriate ones were taken, so I ended up going with the admittedly second-tier ex officio, which means by right of office - essentially, holding a position ex officio means that you hold it by right of holding another position or office. It also works as a pun of sorts, maybe, if you squint, in that the folks in charge of the X-books have historically been called the X-Office.)
Obviously things will change as I go along, but the template that I’m using for these early posts is as follows:
Header: Book Title and Number, Title of Story (Cover Date) Example: The X-Men #1, “X-Men” (September 1963)
Synopsis: A synopsis of the story.
First Appearances: First appearances of people, places, items, etc. in the Marvel Universe.
They’re Back!: Reappearances of recurring characters, or regular characters returning after absences.
X-Powers: New information about characters’ mutant and/or other superpowers.
X-Lore: Character and lore details about the X-Men. (I may end up subdividing this in the future, as this is a really broad heading.)
Pre-Retcons: Information that has been retconned in newer stories since this story was released.
Professor X is a Jerk: As Kitty Pryde informed us decades ago...
Tumblr media
Let us count the ways here.
The Swinging Sixties: The X-Men books have always very much been of their era, and it’s interesting looking at the ways the slang, pop-culture references, and values in the past differ from our own.
Real People: Who are real-life people whom we know also exist in the Marvel Universe?
The Fairer Sex: At least for the first chunk, it’s the 60s, and there’s one female X-Man. Needless to say, the book, and the era, do not treat her amazingly well. As we move further along, hopefully discussion of the weird way comics can treat women will peter off.
Horny Teens: Because if you put a bunch of pubescent, athletically built teens and young adults in close circumstances as the only ones who understand each other, what do you get? The School for Gifted Youngsters is basically like Olympic Village when it comes to hooking up.
Rich People: Rich people, amirite? The X-Books have a lot of them, and this will chronicle their rich-person shenanigans.
Well, It’s An (Artistic) Choice: The X-Men have had many legendary, outstanding artists (and Rob Liefeld), but occasionally the artist or colorist makes a choice that kind of makes you wonder what they were thinking, or if they were.
Head-Scratchers: Things that seem puzzling or make no sense, even in the context of people who can shoot laser beams from their eyes or eat a star. This can include things that are purposely incorrect/implausible for plot convenience, or things that are just “wtf?”
Other Comments: Any other things I have to say about a given issue.
I’ll also be including pictures from the stories on Marvel Unlimited that I can easily screenshot; others that haven’t already been digitized may have fewer visual aids (that said, I’m pretty sure the first decade or two of X-Men comics is 100% on MU, so I should be set for a good while).
