Earlier this year I finished the entire Xenosaga trilogy and most of the media it has. Holy crap overall it was so good. I probably won't be posting spoilers unless I actually put a warning for them on specific posts, but I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT. That goes for the entire Xeno series tbh. I even made a lot of IG posts covering all the translated Xenosaga media but I still need to finish talking about Xenosaga III over there.
Anyways, Pied Piper is peak fiction.

Xenosaga Fan Translates Full Playthrough of Canonical Phone Game, Pied Piper
Noisy Pixel Source. Possible Spoilers for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 below.
Tumblr media
To celebrate the 19th anniversary of the largely unknown Xenosaga: Pied Piper, fan @ValakTurtle has announced that they have translated an entire playthrough of the game on YouTube by @Keju_frangelico. Additionally, “the translation was built on top of Chaoslace’s original translation that was hosted on Zarathustra.”
The script was previously translated, but an in-game translation was absent.
For those unaware, Xenosaga: Pied Piper is a canonical entry in the series that is essentially required reading to fully understand and appreciate the events of Xenosaga Episode III. Given the title’s exclusive presence on mobile phones plus its lack of official localization, it’s not really known by those who haven’t played the Xenosaga games.
In fact, while it has been over a decade since I last played Xenosaga, I (think?) I remember Episode III trying to recap the events of Piped Piper because it is actually significant. As a result, it’s recommended to check out Pied Piper after playing Xenosaga Episode II, despite it taking place roughly a century before the events of the first game.
Piped Piper is arguably more vital to experience than Xenosaga: A Missing Year, which connects Xenosaga Episode II and Episode III.
If you’re a Xenosaga fan and have never delved into Pied Piper, this is a pretty fantastic way to do so. Honestly, huge thanks to @ValakTurtle for deciding to translate this playthrough with English captions. It even appears they’ve translated the menus during battles, which is a pretty intense and intricate step.
You can check out the full Xenosaga: Pied Piper playthrough playlist here or start watching the first episode below:

Earlier this year, fans united for G-MODE Archives to officially re-release Piped Piper.
Speaking of Xenosaga, the conclusion of the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Future Redeemed storyline has seemingly opened up the possibility of a Xenosaga revival or continuation.

I feel sorry for new xeno fans who have to get through 8 full length RPGs (gears/saga 1 2 3/blade 1 X 2 3), 3 DLC Campaigns (all the xenoblade DLC), what is basically a visual novel (xenogears disc 2 💀💀), a 12 episode anime (xenosaga: the animation), a letsplay of a dead mobile game (xenosaga pied piper), and the entire bible.

Pied Piper getting a modern port before the Xenosaga trilogy would be the most thematically correct way for the series to be reintroduced to the mainstream. What is more Eternal Recurrence-like than a video game trilogy that was financially unsuccessful in part due to the first and third games (widely regarded as the best ones) never being released globally, only to regain relevant, global commercial interest because of a niche spin-off game released solely for JP cellphones in 2004.

I just finished future redeemed
I know this is just the end of the story Xenoblade 1 started, but I am incredibly emotional right now. This series in general has gotten me through so much, and I couldn't have asked for a better ending to the story that has literally kept me alive the last few years.
Good news is my dad (after realizing he lost his copy of xenogears) said he will help me install an emulator on my laptop, so I'll finally get to play every single xeno game (ignoring xenosaga spin offs, I would be really impressed with myself if I figured out how to play pied piper)
Anyway, I'm going to go pick up that Xenoblade 2 replay I started awhile ago until my brother gives tears of the kingdom back
Also I have a total of about 171 hours in Xenoblade 3 alone, and over 200 in the other games each, and probably around 300 in X on its own, with at least 2 playthroughs of all but 3

A while back I started playing through the Xenosaga trilogy, got up to the halfway point of Xenosaga 2 and then never got round to finishing it. I recently picked it up again and I was instantly hit with a flashback to how much Ziggy and MOMO’s dynamic gets to me.
Tumblr media
Not just the fact that they come into each other’s lives just as one misses her father while the other is grieving his child. Yay! Angsty surrogate father/daughter feels! But how they each tie into the games’ dichotomy of human and machine. But in a way that is strikingly different from Shion and KOS-MOS, who you’d think would be the obvious example of that in the story.
Ziggy was converted from a human to a cyborg against his will after his death (which is an incredibly screwed up and nightmarish loss of autonomy but discussion for another day). MOMO, as a Realian, was a synthetic being constructed to replace Mizrahi’s deceased daughter, Sakura. Two people who are brought together by circumstance, yet both wish for the exact opposite things. Ziggy would rather become more of a machine, to forget his grief for his family by abandoning his human identity, to the point that he has completely discarded his old name. MOMO, meanwhile, to at least some extent, wants to be human. She still somewhat relates herself to Sakura. She thinks of Mizrahi as her father, and Juli as her mother.
And that’s just the conundrum they pose when we first meet them. That’s even without going into how they develop. But that contrast is brilliant right off the bat. The way they blur the lines of human and machine while also being fantastic foils, AND having a really sweet dynamic. It’s really terrific stuff.
(Disclaimer, I’m probably missing some context or got some stuff wrong as I haven’t beaten Xenosaga 2 yet, nor have I yet looked into Pied Piper which gives Ziggy’s full backstory. I just wanted to comment on how much these two make me think and give me feels as I make my way through the games).

Richard from Xenosaga
Tumblr media
I’m back into Xenosaga, and I finally checked out Pied Piper and Outer Files. As a result, I encountered the elusive design of Richard, and he is fine. He does appear in Episodes II & III, but he’s always in a mech.

So in order to try and understand Xenosaga 3 some more, I needed to look at the side-content. And I figured I should at least share my findings/links. I should note I DID NOT TRANSLATE THESE! Credits are at the end and links are down below:

anyway, i know nobody will answer but which of these subtly cry out "vague reference to xenosaga"? what is a nice conveyance of a darker pied piper? checking wikias on mobile is a nightmare but was there a/the song of nephilim present on abraxas? so many things to consider lol. btw i have dubbed the instrument the "flute of ophanim". get it? ophanim are throne angels and they're also shaped like wheels. hohoooo i am getting better at symbolism /slaps self

What's the correct order to play Xenosaga?
Play 1-3 in that order. The additional games technically do provide more information on the in-between bits of the story, but are also covered in the in-game encyclopedias (which are fun to read by the way, don't let haters sway you).
Pied Piper provides some additional context for the events of 3, but also technically has some huge spoilers if you haven't played 3 yet, so I recommend playing it after the mainline series should you be interested. A Missing Year can be played between 2 and 3, but is otherwise meticulously detailed in 3's encyclopedia as it's the lead-up to the event of 3's plot. This game is technically the last time you'll see shion wear her glasses (outside of like, one scene in 3), and provides some strong base characterization for how both her and Juli act (especially re: Shion's concern for children), so I guess I can consider it recommendable. Freaks is fun but entirely optional. The non-mainline games are all fan-translated, and can be viewed on youtube.
Xenosaga I & II is nice but tbh I think the only additional material of intrigue it provides is exactly how Sakura died.
