Morgan, there's nothing I can tell you about me that you don't already know so here's an infodump about an archaeological site that's near and dear to my heart:

Yankeetown Site is a prehistoric settlement along the north shore of the Ohio river and was home to a terminal Late Woodland settlement occupied approximately from 700 to 1100 CE. It was discovered when artifacts began washing out of the banks of the Ohio river in the 1930s.

The site is highly stratified, meaning that there are thousands of years of occupation that you can see as you scale the tall riverbanks. Clovis era fire pits can be found at the very bottom (8000–6000 BCE) up to Late Woodland (Hopewell) culture.

Here's a pottery sherd from Yankeetown:

The flakey bits are "grog" , AKA the pottery is tempered with little broken up bits of old pots and other ceramic. This is important because this is common in the Mississippian culture (800-1600 CE).

Halifax-area wildfire 50 per cent contained as crews deal with record heat in forecast

A wildfire that began burning in the Upper Tantallon, N.S., area Sunday and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents is now 50 per cent contained.

David Steeves, a forest resources technician with the province’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said Thursday morning the size of the fire has also not grown -- and remains at 837 hectares.

While the update is good news, Steeves stressed it is still a “dangerous and volatile” situation.

"We are far from being out of the woods. Just because we have a level of percentage of containment does not mean the decrease and the importance of safety in this situation has lowered."

Temperatures are expected to reach the high 20s and low 30s for much of the Maritimes Thursday, and Steeves said crews are likely to deal with spot fires are flare-ups during that time.

"If we can get past this period, we have some precipitation on the way that we're looking forward to, so our fingers are crossed that we're going to receive that precipitation and help us a little bit. We need Mother Nature to get on side with us,” he said.

Halifax Fire deputy chief David Meldrum said the rain is only one variable at play in the decision to allow people to return to their homes.

Residents of the Indigo Shores area were allowed back to their homes Wednesday night after an evacuation order was rescinded.

“We will open more,” Meldrum said. “But we will do it in a controlled manner, and in a manner that ensures the safety of our residents.”

Meldrum added fire officials have completed their audit of the damaged and destroyed buildings in the Tantallon area, though he did not have exact numbers Thursday morning.

He also stressed the importance of residents registering with 311 so municipal staff can get in contact with them with information about their homes.

EVACUATION ORDERS

Evacuation orders are still in place for residents in the following communities:

Westwood subdivision, Upper Tantallon

Whitehills subdivision, Hammonds Plains

Highland Park subdivision, Yankeetown

Haliburton Hills

Pockwock Road

Glen Arbour

Lucasville Road to Sackville Drive

Maplewood

Voyageur Way

St George Boulevard, including all side streets

McCabe Lake area

EVACUATION CENTRE

The Canada Games Centre evacuation centre at 26 Thomas Raddall Dr. is open until further notice.

Nova Scotia Health’s mobility primary care clinic is hosting another drop-in clinic at the center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The HRM says major insurance companies will again be available to speak with affected residents from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

COMFORT CENTRES

The following comfort centres are open Thursday:

Black Point and Area Community Centre at 8579 St Margarets Bay Rd. will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre at 1583 Beaver Bank Rd. will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) says the following schools are closed Thursday:

TRANSIT ROUTES

The HRM says the following Halifax Transit routes continue to be affected Thursday:

Route 330 will start and end at Sheldrake Lake -- 3826 St Margarets Bay Rd. There will be no service to the Tantallon Park and Ride located at 3664 Hammonds Plains Rd.

Route 433 will start and end at the West Bedford Park and Ride located at 120 Innovation Dr. There will be no service on Hammonds Plains Road from Gary Martin Drive to Tantallon Park and Ride.

Route 83/183 will end on Crossfield Ridge in Middle Sackville, N.S. The HRM says the bus will then turn right on Sackville Drive and right onto Melham Drive. Routes 83/183 will hold on Melham Drive before departing, heading back to the Sackville Transit Terminal at 7 Walker Ave.

Paddling Adventure on the Withlacoochee River

As our kayaks glide through the dark water of the Withlacoochee River, a calmness fills the cool morning air around us. Birds flit from tree to tree along an embank of oaks and cypresses and the only other sound heard is that of our paddles dipping into the cool, tea-colored water. Our last paddling adventure on this mighty river had been years ago when our pontoon’s motor blew out and we had to paddle back to the boat ramp, Huckleberry Finn raft style, with two little kids. Photo by Sally White The Withlacoochee River Has a Storied Past Mention the Withlacoochee River to a gathering of outdoorsy people and out will pour the most colorful stories. The giant gator that bumped the bottom of someone’s boat. The ‘stuck on the log’ bass tracker. The water moccasin caught on the fishing pole - and that time the gator grabbed a water moccasin. Getting caught on the rocks. The biggest bass catch. The biggest gar catches. Seeing the most humongous gator ever. Withlacoochee River life is rich with its many-storied past. The Withlacoochee River stretches for 141 miles with its headwaters in the Green Swamp through Polk, Pasco, Hernando, Sumter, and Citrus counties. It is only one of two Florida rivers that flows from the south to the north, and it empties into the Gulf of Mexico in Yankeetown, Florida. 30% of the Withlacoochee River’s watershed is recreational land, rich with diverse plant life and over 500 species of vertebrae. Herons, eagles, and hawks fish in its waters for sunfish, bass, and brim. White-tailed deer, bears, bobcats, and raccoons are among the critters roaming the surrounding wilderness along its banks. Bobcats, bears, birds, and more use the Withlacoochee River watershed for their home and to move through the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Today the flow of this tannin-infused dark river is not strong. Fed by swamp waters and springs, the river rises with rainfall, growing darker and faster during wetter periods. As summer rains pour down, the Withlacoochee River becomes deeper and faster. The Withlacoochee name derives from the Creek native language, meaning “little big water.” It is believed to be referring to the drastic level changes in the river. Look for evidence of the past levels by the water marks on the trees along its banks. Silver Lake Recreation Area Here on the south side of Silver Lake, water plants edge the banks, providing shade and sanctuary to the local fish, like largemouth bass, sunfish, and brim, and the storied reptile, Alligator mississippiensis. The Withlacoochee River is known for its large alligator population. There are portions of the river unnavigable by boat due to limestone rocks and low water conditions, making it a haven for Florida’s most famous native reptile population. The dark water of the river, rich in tannins gets its color from the leaf debris and sediment. When the river runs faster, it gets darker. In essence, you are paddling through compost tea. A family of anglers is trying their luck on this confluence of waterways where the Little Withlacoochee joins the big river. The Little Withlacoochee River runs 16 miles from the Richloam Wildlife Management Area in Sumter County, Florida, to the Silver Lake Recreation Area in Hernando County. They are beginning to stir and the smell of camp coffee mingles in the air. We feel as if we are paddling through a house awakening, intruding on their peaceful solace, and so we turn back to rejoin the less populated big river. There is no one on the Withlacoochee River this morning but us. We continue paddling upriver (south). Our goal is to paddle up as far as we can and drift back with the current. The embankments rise on either side. Sandy spots along the river beckon us invitingly. The perfect wilderness campsite? Or a perfect spot for sunning gators? Cypress trees along the river are giants with a network of roots to help stop erosion. Bald cypress trees can grow to six feet in diameter and 150 feet in height. Photo by Sally White Cypress on the Withlacoochee River A ginormous cypress tree stands on the riverbank, surrounded by a group of small knees, looking like a wise professor teaching young minds. Further upriver the cypresses get larger! We are but dwarves in the shadows of their stature. Bald cypresses can grow 6 feet in diameter and about 150 feet in height. The waterline on the cypress trees tells tales of the rise and fall of Little Big River. Photo by Sally White Cypress trees play a vital role in the ecology of the Withlacoochee River. Beneath the surface, their root systems are like a spider web between cypress knees- knobby bits. The knees are thought to be a way to help the tree breathe when its roots are submerged. The root network helps stop, or slow, erosion and keeps the tree anchored in the swamp environment. Like humans; the more of a support system you have around you, the better off you are. The sun rises above the surrounding forest and the sound of a whirring motor echoes across the water, warning of an approaching boat. A family in another vessel passes us. The world is awakening. We take a few more turns along the river and turn around to float back to the boat ramp where families have already settled along the sandy shore to enjoy a Sunday in the Florida sun. Photo by Sally White Not known for excessive water traffic, aside from airboats, because of the many obstacles in the water like rocks and fallen trees, the Withlacoochee tends to be a quieter river for kayaking. His phone number is 352 484 9482. Billy says: Fishing has remained really strong the last few days here. We have won some and lost some, as is fishing. On Tuesday I had Dennis Mitchell and Dan Rieckout for tarpon. Dan has been wanting to get a big tarpon for a long time. It took hours to catch bait and we only managed 2 ladyfish. Finally after about two I hours I had us loaded down with mullet. Set up on anchor and no action for the first hour or so. Then we get broke off by a few big sharks. Finally, our ladyfish gets hammered and 150 pounder comes out of the water. We set chase and three jumps later this big girl throws the hook. Back on anchor and we catch a huge jack that ate a live ladyfish. Then we get three low end slot snook and a keeper redfish. Then a live mullet goes off and its a 130-150 pound class tarpon that jumps and throws hook on first jump. Finally a third tarpon maybe 50 pounds hammers a mullet jumps in my boat and then jump right back out landing on the braid and breaking us off. It was one of those days we all have. We were hooked up to quality fish all day, but they won on this day. On Wednesday I had Amber West on the boat. She and her family have fished with me a ton and she has been in North Carolina for the past few years so a fishing trip was in order. Bait was very easy today, I had a dozen live ladyfish. We had fun catching jacks and ladyfish till the tide turned out. Once this happened we set up and put out the baits. The first few hours we got nada, but we were patient and stuck it out. We got broke off a few time by big sharks so I put on some wire. Finally, a solid hookup and its a beast. After about a 45 minute battle we see about a 9 foot lemon shark. We release her and get set back up. Still seeing no tarpon but just a few roll. We start throwing for snook, our lure gets hammered and in comes about a ten pound goliath. The lure was stuck in his throat so I brought him in to get it out and let him swim away safely. After no tarpon action I go ahead to another spot and throw out the ladyfish, instantly Up comes up a well over 40 inch snook. We hooked up 3 more big big snook that got off right by boat. Here we see a former Santa Fe Alco RSD15; I believe it was owned by the Squaw Creek Coal Company at the time I ran across it. I have some history of this very distinctive unit here...

9842 RSD15, was built by Alco in June 1960, #83578, as Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 842. It was renumbered 9842 Class 9800, in 1970, and sold to Precision National Corp in 1975. They sold it to Squaw Creek Coal Company as 9842 in 1975. It later became Peabody Coal Company 9842 and then was sold to Indiana Hi-Rail as 9842 in 1988. It was soon renumbered 442. It was sold to Austin & Texas Central as 442 in 2000 (source).

I’m not sure where I was when I saw this locomotive: Boonville or Yankeetown, Indiana, perhaps. [Someone of FB has since told me this is two or three miles north of Boonville.]

'This is not helping': Frustrated evacuees say official communication lacking in wildfire recovery

Seventeen-year resident Peter Dominey hasn't been allowed into his Yankeetown subdivision to see his fire-damaged property yet, which made it even more shocking for him to see footage of it on the news.

“I got quite upset, by whoever made that decision,” said Dominey.

He says officials never told him media would tour the fire-ravaged neighbourhood before the residents could.

For him, it’s one communication failure among many since the massive wildfire tore through suburban Halifax 10 days ago.

“This is not helping,” he says. “Let people in to see their homes, I mean, surely somebody could reach out and contact us.

“It's adding more pressure to an already overwhelming time,” said Brandon MacLeod, a fellow evacuee.

MacLeod knows his home is gone, but that didn’t make it any easier to see it on the front page of the newspaper.

While there was a site visit organized by officials last week for those who lost everything, MacLeod didn’t participate. The lack of privacy, and the fact residents weren’t allowed to get off the bus to walk their properties, still bothers him.

“There’s no doubt our community looks vastly different than when we left Sunday afternoon,” he says, “and the simple fact that they were only given the opportunity to see it from a bus, is disappointing.”

Macleod and Dominey are among a number of evacuees who contacted CTV News, frustrated by what they feel is a lack of communication.

Some say they have yet to hear directly from officials about their properties.

Others told CTV they were notified their homes were impacted only through an impersonal email.

Tuesday, jurisdiction over the wildfire recovery in affected areas was transferred from the provincial Department of Natural Resources back to the city.

“We’re working on improving our communications and the way that the information has been presented on our website,” says Erika Fleck, Halifax’s director of emergency management.

On its website, the city says, “The municipality has been contacting residents who have registered as evacuees of the area of significant impact. To date, staff have had phone conversations with most residents as well as face-to-face discussions as follow-up for those whose homes have been destroyed.”

But Fleck admits, “Sometimes to be honest, (the communication is) never going to be good enough and I’m sure I would feel the same way if I were in their shoes, but there is open correspondence with everyone who wants it.”

But in terms of letting residents return, Fleck emphasizes there are too many safety concerns.

She says the media tour had a few participants, under highly controlled conditions with an RCMP escort.

Sites aren't safe enough for anything else right now, she said.

“We have oil furnaces spilled. We have propane tanks blowing up as recently as yesterday. There are still downed power lines on some of the streets.

"Well caps are off. (There’s) sunken sewer spewing — a whole list of hazards that are still ongoing that does not make it safe for people to traverse through those neighbourhoods."

Meanwhile, evacuees like MacLeod and Dominey say they feel left in limbo.

“Our community is hurting in a great, great way,” said MacLeod. “We need all the support we can get.”

“The anguish and the anger that the residents here are having, hopefully, will move this process into a better process so that this doesn't happen again,” says Dominey.

“And whatever process is in place, maybe needs to be rethought, and maybe if they lived here, they'd (do) that."
