Technopolis/Rydeen, final scene from Yellow Magic Orchestra’s 1984 concert film “Propaganda”. A concert film in the sense that it’s a narrative film interwoven with live footage and music from their Propaganda tour.
I got tagged by @funeralshawls 🐻 to share what 4 albums I've been fixated on and now my ass is finally ready:
Praise a Lord... etc / Yves Tumor: came out recently so yeah I've been listening and still forming an opinion! Overall I'd say I feel positive about it and love a majority of the songs, but a few I feel are throwaways sorry lmao. I looooooove In Spite of War, Heaven Surrounds Us Like a Hood, God is a Circle, and Ebony Eye
Katamari Damacy OST: This has been in my rotation for nearly two years if I'm being honest. But I'm listening to it again cause I got new headphones and everything sounds soooo sexy wow. I can't believe I was listening to these songs without them.
Congratulations / MGMT: It's been years since I've listened to this album and I felt like revisiting it! I forgot how amazing Siberian Breaks was!!! I think I appreciate it more now that I'm older :]
Propaganda / YMO: Ok so technically it's a musical film and not an album but that still counts in my book. Thanks yewchewb for the recommendation, I totally forgot they existed. I've been bumping along to Tong Poo whenever I have to do chores.
1979: The Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) a fantastic Japanese electronic band, records “Behind the Mask”.
1982: Qunicy Jones recommends it to Michael Jackson, who re-writes the lyrics and records it for the Thriller album, but it doesn’t make the cut. That 1982 cut was only released in 2010.
1983: YMO do a great live version for their Propaganda tour.
1984: Greg Phillanges, who played keyboard for Michael Jackson, does a rock cover version of the Michael Jackson pop re-write.
1986: Phillanges, who also played keyboards for Eric Clapton, plays on the Clapton version, probably the best-known iteration.
1993: The Human League record their version in collaboration with what’s left of YMO, turning it into a bouncy piano number. Is it even a 90s track if it doesn’t have a bouncy piano rhythm line?
2004: Goldie Lookin Chain sampled it for their track, and I am not making this up, “Your Mother’s Got A Penis”. Do not feel any obligation to click on that. You’d never get away with that these days, etc.
