DR SEWARD:

Seward tells himself he has hobbies. He does not. His hobbies are all various extensions of his work. He collects interesting volumes of medical literature from rare bookshops in London, which he keeps in a glass cabinet in his office. He enjoys studying the more "unusual" patients who arrive under his care, carefully noting down each and every change in their demeanour, and in his heart of hearts longs for a likeminded individual to discuss them with over a bottle of port. The closest he's ever come to said individual is Van Helsing, who laughs at him and makes jokes, which thoroughly ruins the mood.

ARTHUR:

My boy is made of hobbies. He was raised within the outdoor lifestyle of the English gentry. He can fish and row with ease, knows his way around a croquet mallet (for the sake of his mother's parties when he was young), played rugby and cricket at university (but only because it was the Done Thing among his friends) and adores hunting. His one failing is his inability to ride with any grace or ease, having fallen from a horse aged thirteen and never quite recovered his nerve. He'll happily pay to watch other people ride, however.

QUINCEY:

Another man made of hobbies. If asked, Quincey will gladly admit that he's spent more of his life outdoors than in, and that it's taken almost a lifetime of effort to acclimate himself to English sensibilities. He knows how to ride better than he can run, can shoot almost any gun going, and wishes for a decent mountain in England he can hike across (alas, there are none.)

gimme some random fun facts about russell !!

most of these are going to be young russell because he was. an idiot.

i think my fave is that he chipped his tooth when he was 10 playing rugby, and that he never considered to get it fixed. even arguing that he "shouldn't" need to fix his tooth to get roles. and then the director of 'the crossing' had to sit him down like. this character does not have a fucked up tooth. i do not want you to have this fucked up tooth. i am going to pay for your fucked up tooth to get fixed from my own pocket. it is peak dumbass russell moments. (and he mentioned that after he got his tooth fixed it was A Lot easier to get roles. my man. my dude.)

i also love how silly and dedicated he is to his roles, and that for the sum of us he'd go to bars in the sydney gay scene.... so much so that some people were discussing his sexuality when his girlfriend was in ear shot. 😭

he was fired. for using naughty words. at his gig as a bingo host.

he was actually seriously considering being a musician for someone (thankfully) told him that he should try acting. nowadays he refers to russ le roq (his teen music project) as "the worst performing single in NZ history"

when they were shooting la confidential he stayed in a tiny apartment so he'd feel bigger. 😭 (but tbh they were also trying to squeeze him out of that movie role, so maybe he simply couldn't afford bigger too <3)

i think it's important to remind people of his theatre kid days

speaking of theatre... when he played in rocky horror he dealt with a heckler by saying "if you squirt me one more time with your water pistol, I shall come off this stage and I shall jam my stiletto in the crack of your ass.” which is the greatest sentence he's ever formed, probably

the story he told during is igp concerts last summer about him living in sydney & busking to earn his rent. and sometimes having to choose between food and cigarettes. my bank account can relate

this entire quote: "just yelling and screaming and waving a gun around doth not a bad guy maketh. you have to have something in the ideology or the essential motivations of the character that take it beyond the average. but that is the same of both protagonists and villain, heroes and bad boys, or bad girls. but i haven’t been asked to play a bad girl lately."

i love how he always tries to figure out a way to bond with cast members. during les mis he'd invite people for sing-alongs, the whole master & commander thing with the t-shirts, always giving cast and crew merch from his band/rugby team, taking people to places. he's so often praised by cast members for this <3

This continues to be a liiiittle slow at times, but when it flows? it FLOWS. Also it's very, very pretty still, the framing and the shots are really nice.

That getting changed montage was a work of art, but also: props to Jom; I did NOT manage to figure out how to put those trousers on the one time I had the chance and had to get help. And speaking of clothes, I cannot place this-- from Khun Yai's mother's clothes I'd expect maybe the 1920s or even the Khun Chaai era (30s/40s), but from everyone else's I'd say much earlier … otoh some of the women's skirts show their knees, so what gives? Did they tell us the year and I just missed it? ALSO. Why was James wearing this extremely sporty and informal cap to an event that is probably not at all informal or sporty???

Lots of familiar faces this episode – Mae Prik (Akk's mother in The Eclipse), Khamtip (Annie's mother in Mama Gogo, Ying in Step by Step), Khun Lek (young Nabsip in Lovely Writer, young Mew in UMG), James (hot-headed rugby player with the brow and the gun in Bad Buddy) …

Had a good laugh at the food sequence because a) not an unreasonable reaction on Jom's part b) I'd try all of that anyway and c) curried steamed pig brain sausage / แอ็บอ่องออ is what defeated Tian in ATOTS, too.

Sapphics!!! Nothing going on (yet) to support that hypothesis but I'm sticking with it for now. And Phueng gets to be surprisingly vicious and to-the-point with her husband – I was not expecting that.

I would not want to be in Ming's position. He just wanted to help and all the one he's helped is doing is getting into trouble, much of which reflects badly on Ming. Bet Ming is rueing the day he scraped Jon up from the riverside, poor kid. Good of him to be like "kid gloves are off, you're learning to row a boat yourself gdi".

Jom needs to get better at committing to the "I'm getting flashes of memories but none of them make sense" bit, and at reading the room – I get that this is all freaky as hell, but the way he would not back down with who he thought was Jeeb? Not cool. She was clearly scared and uncomfortable.

This show does a lot of the explaining to the audience stuff really well. I love the, whatsit, peekaboo framing? and also. Hope the piglet is SO cute. Help.

12: having a lazy day

John had to hold back to not hop out of his class. Finally summer break! He still had to write a paper and he would only get results on the last exams in the next two weeks but for now he didn’t care. He was gonna do exactly… nothing for the rest of the day. A grin spread across his face as he thought that. Well, he would probably listen to music, read a book or watch a movie at night but... nothing that involves brainwork! He couldn’t believe he was done with his first year of his doctorate. He had done it! The first year was always hard and he knew that before, but this hard?! University made the first years most challenging so they could pick out the toughest students. John Watson was proud to say that he was ONE of those.

With a smile dancing on his lips he walked out the university building. He had originally planned to head back to his tiny apartment right away, but now that he was outside, the campus seemed surprisingly inviting. He decided to stay here for a while. He found himself a tree to sit down underneath. Then he pulled out his headphones and put his favorite rock playlist on. With a content feeling starting to spread inside of him he laid down on his backpack. This day was gonna be great!

'Sweet child o’mine' by Guns n’ Roses had just started playing when somebody suddenly stood in front of him, blocking the sun.

“…tson, right?”, he heard somebody asking. Reluctantly and a bit annoyed John took off his headphones. “Sorry?”

“You’re John Watson, right?”, a boy asked him. John didn’t see any of him, since he was standing against the sun. He only saw his silhouette: tall, slim, locks. The sun gave him something like a halo.

“Uh, yeah? Why are you asking..?”

“You left your notebook in room 404.”, the young man held it out to him. Hesitantly John stood up and took it.

“How did you know it’s mine? And how do you know me?”, John asked. His name (stupidly) wasn’t written on the notebook and- hell, he’d remember that face for sure.

The young man spluttered but looked to the side: “Come on, every body knows that new rugby player who, for once, doesn’t fucking suck.”

John frowned. “They do?”

The young man just shrugged, still avoiding eye contact.

“And how did you know this was mine?”, John held up the notebook.

The other man finally looked at him with a hint of a smile. “I deduced it.”, he simply said, then he turned around to walk away.

It took John a moment to recover. That guy’s face was- fuck. Those eyes and that almost-smile? My lazy day is gonna involve him, John thought and turned around towards the direction where the boy has disappeared.

“Wait!”, he yelled, waving his notebook in the air and started running - forgetting his backpack, phone and headphones on the ground.

He caught up to the guy. He needed a second to catch his breath (which was not only because of the running) and finally looked into the guy’s eyes.

John scratched the back of his neck. “Do you wanna- would you like to have a lazy day with me?”

The guy just stared down at him. Then John almost facepalmed ‘have a lazy day with him’??? What the actual fuck?!

“You know, this semester was really stressful and I planned on just having the laziest day in the history of lazy days, because I didn’t have a lazy day since what? Three? Four? Months? And I would still like to have a lazy day… but maybe with you? Not that it would be boring. With you I mean. Boring doesn’t equal lazy. Oh my god, how often did I just say lazy? Quite often I think. Too often probably. Am I talking too much? I am talking too much. My god, I am so sorry…”

The boy finally opened his mouth, then he looked away while clearing his throat. Finally he opened his mouth: “I… don’t really do lazy days.”

“Oh.”, John said. He doesn’t wanna hang out with you, Watson. You’re being a mess and obvious and now he doesn’t wanna hang out with you. Well done. “Then… I guess… never mind. I’ll just- you know- okay have a lazy day! Good day! Good day, I mean. Damnit.” John turned around and tried to flee from this very awkward situation.

“But I- wait! John!”, the man had grabbed John’s arm. “I- spending the day with you sounds great.”, he said.

“Oh- really? Are you sure? You don’t have to if you don’t wanna. Obviously. No pressure, of course-“

The young man chuckled softly. John immediately stopped talking. “Why are you laughing?”

“I just thought-”, the mysterious man walked backwards towards John’s stuff, facing him. “-John H. Watson, doctor to be and future rugby-captain, wouldn’t be that flustered by asking a boy out.”

“I didn’t- I didn’t ask you out! I just wanted to spend a lazy day with you!”

“Uh-huh. Sounds like a very bisexual thing to say to me.”, the young man smirked, and turned around walking just a step in front of John.

“Woah… I am not- What do you mean by- Jesus Christ! How could you POSSIBLY know that!”

“I deduced it.”, the man said, looked back and John saw that this (decisively too good-looking) smirk has never left those (decisively too inviting) lips.

“What does that even mean? And can you not spread out all my secrets while I don’t even know your freaking name, please?!”

“The name is Sherlock Holmes. Do catch up, hm? I know a good Italian place where we could-”

“Sherlock Hol- yeah, hold on one second.”, John stopped walking and pulled Sherlock back by his hand. “It’s my lazy day. You are just bonus material. I’m gonna decide where we are going.”

Sherlock raised his eyebrows. “Did you just call me bonus material?”

“Yes, I did.”

Sherlock playfully gasped: “How dare you.”

John smirked. “I am a sass king. I kinda do things like that.”, now it was his turn to turn around and walk off.

Sherlock snorted: “Yeah, unless you’re asking boys out.”, he called out.

“Shut up and come already, will you?”, John replied.

Sherlock caught up with John, then they walked off the university campus to spend a lazy day together. And it was gonna be the best lazy day in the history of lazy days, John thought.

My fav was the last scene of Dutch & Johnny in bed, him reading her his comic, which was super adorable. He even did voices too.🥰 In contrast, my friends fav scene was Johnny using the bolt gun to shoot the hostage takers.

Elemental (with sister & her bf)

In a city where fire, water, land, and air residents live together, a fiery young woman and a go-with-the-flow guy discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.

So bright and colourful. An animated romcom with some solid laughs and suprisingly deep tbh. The part about the city centre not being accessible for everyone is something I very much relate to. An easy Sunday afternoon watch.

The work rate of Wales was immense. And with so many unforced errors from Australia the final score was inevitable. Also, my sister's bf was much more relaxed lol. "Poor Australia"

Confrontation 5

Gemma had stood in the path of the other man as he angrily strode forward. This was the most frightening experience the young cadet had undergone in her young life. All her imaginings of rugby tackles, swinging her baton or even drawing her unused gun for real for the first time, vanished from her teenaged mind. Instead she screwed up her eyes, clenched her fists, drew in a deep breath and yelled at the top of her voice: “STOP!”

When she opened them again she saw the man had stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide over his mask. “Ok, ok,” he stammered at Gemma, “take it easy, lady, I wasn’t really going to punch him.” To Gemma’s delight and surprise, her male opponent had actually raised his hands in the familiar surrender gesture. “Geez!” he uttered, almost in alarm. Gemma’s eyes beamed at him which he clearly found disconcerting because he averted his eyes and gazed at the floor. Then the young woman said the words she had only ever uttered in training - “Turn around, sir, and put your hands behind your back!” Gemma even felt gratitude when the subdued guy did precisely that. As he stood in front of her, his hands held behind him, waiting for her, the trainee policewoman had the overwhelming urge to take a photograph. But suddenly she woke up, smoothly removed her handcuffs from her belt and advanced on the man who was now her prisoner.

“Hi, Di!” Gemma called over to the other woman excitedly as she handcuffed the unhappy looking and defeated would be combatant, noticing Diana was involved in precisely the same action with her captive, “Am I doing all right?”

Your all time favorite bl character and why.

But there are so many… I going with Sean from Not Me. I didn’t pay attention to him at the start of the series because I was focused on White and Yok, but Sean grew as a character throughout the show. He makes bad decisions, he’s harsh and violent, but he also has endless bravery, a driving passion for justice, and this wonderful softness and love. He’s been knocked down in life by so many things (including White) and he keeps getting up and moving forward. I’m louder about my affection for other characters, but of the fictional bl/gl characters I’ve gotten my grubby little hands on, Sean is ultimately the prize.

Wai from Bad Buddy. I don’t hate him and there are worse characters who deserve it more. And yet….I think he would be better off in the stratosphere than hanging out near my precious Pran :)

Howl’s Moving Castle. Not only do I not like the Studio Gibli version, I also think it would make an EXCELLENT GL!! Howl as a woman with a reputation for eating men’s hearts. She’s probably high femme and also still an ex-rugby player.

Biggest disappointment.

Uh, unpopular opinion probably, but maybe History 3: Trapped. I’m a sucker for the right kind of mafia story (hello, my kinnporsche obsession), so I got really excited about History3 and I didn’t like it for a number of reasons. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad show, it was just a big let down for me personally.

There are so many. But I don’t think I’m every getting over Khai’s wardrobe from Theory of Love. Those clothes wouldn’t have been a big deal on any other character, but I felt like they changed my idea of who Khai was in unexpected and delightful ways. If that makes sense.

As the cost of living crisis deepens, you may be assessing your regular monthly outgoings and looking for things you can cut back on. If you are lucky enough to be a homeowner, your biggest monthly expense is likely to be your mortgage.

But will your lender allow you to reduce your payments if you explain that you are struggling? And how will that affect your credit record? Similarly, if you have life insurance or a pension, can you take a break from your payments, and what will the consequences be?

Taking a break from your mortgage

According to UK Finance, the trade association for banks, mortgage lenders should offer “forbearance” to any customer who is in financial difficulty or unable to make their mortgage payments.

This could take the form of an authorised payment holiday, where your lender gives you permission not to pay your mortgage for a short period, usually up to three months. Alternatively, with your lender’s permission, you may be allowed to reduce your monthly repayments.

It can be tempting to cut pension contributions when money gets tight but you are losing more than just your own contribution

These arrangements come at a cost. Any payment holiday will be noted on your credit record, which could have implications the next time you want to borrow money – you may, for example, be charged a higher interest rate. You will also be expected to pay back everything you have missed paying once you are no longer in financial difficulty. Your mortgage is likely to cost you significantly more in the long run.

Cancelling life insurance premiums

LV= allows this – but you can only benefit if your policy (for income protection, critical illness or life insurance) has been in force for a year or more, you have a good history of paying and are less than three months behind with monthly premiums. You must declare that you have suffered a significant drop in your income or that your usual earnings have stopped. The payment break will only be offered for a month at a time, for up to three months.

If you do find yourself in a position where you have to cut or stop your contributions, try to resume them as soon as you can.

For example, it says a 33-year-old with £250,000 of life cover, paying £21.86 a month, could reduce their payments to £4.17 a month for six months. However, the maximum that could be claimed during this six-month period would be only £10,000.

Cutting your pension contributions

You may also be considering reducing or stopping your pension contributions for a while. This may ease your financial pressures a little in the short-term but it will reduce your income in retirement.

Cutting £693 a year from your pension will mean £1,284 less goes into your fund. If that money manages to grow by 5% a year until you retire, the long-term cost is even greater. Hargreaves Lansdown, an investment platform, estimates that a 40-year-old basic-rate taxpayer who cuts back on their pension payments in this way – reducing their contributions by only £57.75 a month for only one year – would end up £4,569 worse off, before fees, by the age of 67.
