This will be a long post, as a heads up.
@winterpower98 Since you said you were interested in hearing this. 😁 Also, a fair bit of this is geared towards the Cursed AU and the Flower Fruit Kings/Shadowpeach Family in particular.
This train of thought got started with a song called 'Bridge of Light'. The original is by Pink and was in the movie 'Happy Feet Two', but the version I was listening to was a vocal rendition by a theater group. The song is about even when you lose everything, as long as you have love, you have light which will be your bridge in tough times. Beautiful song. Highly recommend listening to it.
Also, I think about the symbolism surrounding the Sun and the Moon a lot due to a story I am creating and as such, my brain asked the question: "What is a Bridge of Light? Can it be connected to symbolism surrounding the cosmos?" And the answer hit me over the back of my head. Then I decided to see if this Bridge of Light could be applied to Monkey Kid.
Let's go through the family to see, shall we?
Macaque - He is the Moon. Once again, simple and understandable.
Sun Wukong - He is the Sun. Pretty simple and with no need to explain.
MK - Okay, hear me out on this one. When it comes to being the Monkie Kid, the Monkey King's successor, he is a Star. But! When it comes to being MK, the son of Wukong and Macaque, he isn't a star. He is the Sunset. Guardian of the Sun. Why? Well..
Mei - She is the Sunrise. Defender of the Moon. When it comes to the Sunset and Sunrise, I like to think of a sword and shield.
The Sun comes out to rule over the day and reaches the peak of power around midday before it begins to dwindle in it's power. At the end of the day, it has weakened significantly and needs time to regenerate its energy, but it also at risk of being overpowered by the Moon.
So why is MK the Sunset and Mei the Sunrise? Well, outside of the colors they tend to wear, they each have a close bond to one particular monkie dad a bit more than with the other. Mei was Macaque's daughter before becoming Wukong's and MK was Wukong's son before becoming Macaque's. They are the protectors of that Celestial body in a metaphorical sense.
The sun and moon balance each other in the cosmos, the Yin and Yang. They aren't allowed to overpower the other. As such, a guard/champion is each placed at the times of day where it is possible for one to be overpowered.
The Sunset protects the weakened Sun and makes way for the Moon, who is at full strength to come rule the night. The Sunrise does the same but opposite - protecting the weakened Moon and making way for the rise of the rejuvenated Sun.
So. Moving on to:
Cherry - Ri Shi. The Solar Eclipse. When the Moon covers the light of the Sun and all we can see in the sky is a ring of flames. She is quiet, but fiesty and dramatic (theatrical?) much like a Solar Eclipse. We know it is happening when it happens. It is hard to miss. And like how the Sun is covered up by the Moon, she hides her weaknesses and fear behind her anger and distrust/paranoia.
Apple - Yue Shi. The Lunar Eclipse. When the Earth blocks the Sun from the Moon. He is the one who usually speaks. Where Cherry only speaks every so often/rarely (like a Solar Eclipse), Apple will speak up often and with confidence in the same way the Moon is a constant. He is okay being in the background and less obvious akin to the Lunar Eclipse.
Nezha - He is a rainbow. Just as he has been adopted by only Wukong, a true natural born in the wild rainbow only shows during the day. While I don't know much about him from the show yet, (as I haven't seen S3 yet), I have a hunch he will be dramatic/eccentric and a somewhat colorful person and if that doesn't sound like a rainbow, I don't what does.
Yin and Jin - Here we have finally come to the Stars of the family. They have only been taken in by Macaque, just as the Stars are only really seen at night. Afar, they are but twinkling and dancing lights. Up close, they are completely different. The Chaos Twins are the same way-powerful in their own right, but prefer to be himbos himbros. Plus, the stars (for me at least) with twinkle between a golden color to a more blueish silver color.
And finally:
Zan - She is the one who answers the question I posed above. The Bridge of Light. The Aurora Borealis. Strategically chaotic, bright and beautiful to see in the night sky. The Bridge between the Sun and Moon. Zan has quite literally done this on many levels when it comes to Macaque and Wukong.
She was there when Wukong and Macaque finally talked and began officially courting due to Mac 'kidnapping' her to lure Wukong out since the king is impossible to kidnap as is common in the Demon Courting Customs. (If I remember correctly at least). She was the Bridge for them to be able to reach each other and become a couple.
Zan has also helped the Eclipse Twins integrate into the family. Inviting them to come do stuff or hang out, getting them used to being around other monkeys and around the dads. She likely was involved with the twins being able to befriend Bai He. She gave them love and comfort at times and in ways that others couldn't reach. She was the bridge to unite them with the family.
Zan is also the bridge in another BIG way. And it is due to being the reincarnation of the beloved Marshal Ma. Ma in the past brought the group together which lead to Ba and Beng getting married, Macaque finding a home, a family and eventually a mate. The one who advised Wukong in his duties as a king and did all she could to love and support her found family.
In recent times? Because of the situation surrounding her birth and being orphaned, she was brought into Wukong and Macaque's lives. She becomes close with Macaque in particular and has worked to help him in all she can. Zan being close allows the two ancient monkies to learn of her connection to Ma. This leads to the reunion of the original group, the Flower Fruit Monkies with Ma there in spirit. A family torn apart and reunited. This also leads to a reunion for the BlueHollys family.
Zan is the past and the present coming together in unison which will spear head the future. The uniting of the Old Flower Fruit group and the New Flower Fruit group. She is friends with all of them, (as I suspect she will worm her way into Nehza's heart as well).
Without her, Wukong and Macaque wouldn't have gone to see the generals. Ba and Beng would have likely never been reunited with their daughter while Bai He would have no sense of where she belongs. The Eclipse Twins would have had a EXTREMELY harder time connecting with their new family.
Zan is a bridge made with orderly chaos, love and light.
She is the Aurora Borealis.

VALLEYS AU SKETCH DUMP (1) YAHOO
2 | 3 | 4
1) The gang will be doing a lot of traveling in the second arc post-camellia and I just think Wukong being unaffected by the cold vs Macaque being really sensitive to it is very nice (cough); I also believe Wukong is hiding Mei and MK under there. Just for funsies
2) Snow Cloak content!!! I’ll write a small ficlet about this but the premise is pretty simple: Macaque tries to spend the day alone with Bai He after moving out from living with Tang and trying to provide for the young girl on his own. He takes her out—and immediately shenanigans ensue.
3) Mei! Featuring the aftermath of this moment in the AU
4) Ending it with a Million Dreams content! Wukong wanted to spend time with the twins but Rì Shí was busy with Zhizhu so he went out with Yuè Shí instead. They got milkshakes 💕💖

Totally not based on me and my sib but growing up the twins get way taller than Bai He and she is furious about it
"This is our baby sister Bai He"
"Im the older one!! Dont listen to them 😭😭"
But also
"Bai He can you pass me that thing on the cabinet?"
"Cherry, you are 20cm taller than me- you have been able to reach the cabinet for the past 3 years"
"Oh right i forgot 💀"
Bai He suffers what Macaque went through with Beng, what Ba went through with SWK, what Xiaotian went through with Xiaojiao AND what Nezha is going through with Sen

I re read that fic and Nezha and the twins are so cute but also
Nezha: -venting-
The babies: goo goo gaa
Nezha: you right i need to get my shit together
The babies: baa baa baa
Nezha: i know i know i just need time
But also, SWK waking up one night because its way too quiet so he checkes the babies, only to find Nezha alseep, sitting next to the crib and the twins in his arms, one aready sleeping and the other half asleep, chewing his hair like a toy.
Nezha stirs. He feels a weight on his arms, warm and heavy, and quietly lets out a sigh of relief at the sight of the twin monkeys appearing in front of him, thankful it wasn’t anything or anyone that sneaked up on him in the middle of the night. The immortal stares at the pair, scrunching his nose slightly at Rì Shí, carefully removing his hair from her mouth and clicking his tongue at the condition of it. He’d probably going to have to cut it.
Still, Nezha gets comfortable again, bringing the little ones closer to him and rests his head against one of the pillows he’d stolen from Xiaojiao’s bed, closing his eyes before murmuring, his voice strained from sleep, “They’re not that bad.”
There comes a soft chuckle, tired and amused. “Yeah. You’re not a bad brother.”
“I never recalled saying I was a brother to these two, bàba.” Nezha sniffs, relaxing despite himself when he feels a blanket be placed over his shoulders, warm and delicate. He opens one eye and gazes up at the immortal Sage, golden eyes gleaming softly back down at him. The Lotus Prince wraps the blanket carefully around himself and the twins, murmuring, “I’ll take care of them.”
“I know you will,” Wukong says softly. He presses a kiss to Nezha’s head and gently brushes his fingers against the demon monkeys’ cheeks before getting up.
He leaves the room and quietly shuts the door.

@winterpower98: Could I get some Eclipse twins and Nezha? me, already opening my laptop: say less "With a little time and patience, you’ll end up finding yourself with a new reason to be kind and full of love. Sometimes, that reason comes in the form of two little annoyances that crawled their way into your heart." (1.6k, could be read as a prequel to this small ficlet, I adored writing this one 💖💕)
————————————
“I don’t like them.” Golden lines of magic caress the scars and cuts and bruises that slowly start to heal from the young god’s arms and torso, his eyes set into a glare that burns furiously as blue hands start to unravel gauze from its structure and start to sit Nezha upright, a hum of amusement coming from the older demon when Nezha tries to swat Yin away with a weak wave of his hand. “They smell like vile and smoke,” the prince continues, ignoring the way the horned demon smiles at him knowingly, pointy teeth peeking out from the corners of his mouth, “And, ‘sides, it’s already so crowded here with you and bàba and Jade and Ember.”
Yin lifts Nezha’s arms up with ease, carefully leaning over to wrap the remaining gauze over Nezha’s stab wound. He presses his forehead to the god and looks at him with wide red eyes, watching as furrowed brows relax slowly into a more annoyed expression, a quiet sigh escaping the prince’s lips. “Aye, it’s crowded. But don’t blame the lil’ guys for that. They need a good role model.”
Nezha opens his mouth but Yin waves him off, leaning back and grabbing the unused gauze and bandages to put them back into their boxes, a chirp in his voice as he speaks, “Me ‘n the lass are going to go downtown, scavenge for parts for the broken ship. Jin’s headin’ to the Bull Family’s place with Xiaotian.” The blue demon shoots the former human a grin, snatching his coat from the rack and winking as he drums his fingers on the open door. “Good luck with the little scamps!” is said with a low laugh, the door closing shut with a quiet click and leaving Nezha alone in the silence.
The hours passed by quietly; the lake is quiet and the small house they’ve been sharing over the course of the last few months was dreadfully silent, small chirps from passing birds and the smell of water lilies was not enough to dull Nezha into sleeping and, instead, he’s spent the last few hours walking around the perimeter with two shadows trailing after him, jumping over small pebbles and waiting for a handful of seconds to hear the quiet coos from the nuances before returning to the house with a frustrated sigh, kicking his shoes off and laying down on the grassy floor of the gardens. The camellias were in bloom and the chrysanthemums were slowly starting to wilt from lack of water (something he was sure to remind Xiaojiao of once she returns) and dark grey eyes traced the outlines of what was once a beautiful bush of blossoms, replaced by the steadily growing bundles of raspberries. It was then that he frowned and let out the quietest “shit” as a pair of paws made their way from the wooden floors of the house and carefully plopped down the steps to join him at his sides.
Yuè Shí is the moon of the two, beady yellow eyes gazing into Nezha’s own, the soft murr of neediness escaping his throat as he chirps and shifts in his stance, tail flicking back and forth anxiously. Nezha sees nothing of his own father in him. There is no spirit of the Intelligent Stone Monkey on the surface of the small thing; Nezha’s finger comes up to touch the monkey cub’s tummy and he flinches when Yuè Shí squeaks, moving away his finger in fear of having hurt him but—ah, he calms down when the dark furred runt crawls around Nezha’s head, stopping in front of him and forcing the lotus prince to tilt his chin up to be able to look at him properly. The little moon reaches out with their paws and pats the two markings on Nezha’s forehead, lifting their paws and cooing when they see that they’re still there.
Rì Shí is the sun. She climbs over Nezha and, there, he can pinpoint where the King’s influence has affected her. Her fur is tainted in spots of red and it fades into a beautiful shade of orange, the flicker of white that highlights her paws and it brings attention to the fact her eyes are of a bluish hue. She slips in her step, letting out a low chirp when her chin lands on Nezha’s chest and her cheeks puff up when the prince snorts, hissing and swatting at his sweater while ignoring her twin’s mewls and chirping. The garden is filled with the sound of two young demons, their words incoherent and unable to translate from all the languages Nezha has learned in his immortal life.
Nezha lifts Yù Shï by the scruff and places him gently on his chest. His voice is hoarse when he speaks, “I don’t understand you. I don’t know why they care about you. You’re small and useless, you’re nothing like bàba or Jade or Ember. You’re little annoyances and you whine and chirp all day, you’re tiny and small and you go to someone else for protection because you’ve not yet grown enough to be able to defend yourselves. I don’t understand.” Nezha rubs his index finger against Rì Shí’s cheek and feels her starting to purr, eyes blinking close with the faintest hint of a smile on her face. “I never had younger siblings. Small siblings. Never again after what happened in the sea. I don’t know why you’re so clingy or needy—what good does it do to worry about you so much?”
A small array of fingers wrap around Nezha’s wrist. Dark eyes flick to the other cub; Nezha’s lips part when Yuè Shí bites the exposed skin softly, pawing at his hand and only stops when the prince curiously reaches out with his free hand to rub his cheek as well. The wind rustles the blossoming plum and peach trees, sending several green leaves fluttering into the air, pulling at Nezha’s hair and the twin’s messy fur.
“What good are you for?” Nezha breathes, moving the little moon to lay down next to his sister against his chest. The twins coo softly, leaning against the Lotus Prince’s hands when he pets and scratches their cheeks and heads softly, gently. “When I was younger I never got this affection. I never got my mother’s love or my father’s respect. My older brothers didn’t glance my way at all.” Nezha blinks and finds himself slowly sitting up, holding the two cubs gently in his hands so as to not drop them. His voice cracks, “I never went through this. I never got this type of treatment when I was born. I never knew what it was like.”
A quiet chirp comes from the little sun. A tear lands on her forehead and she slowly opens her eyes to gaze up at dull red eyes. She coos.
Nezha breathes in slowly, cupping half of Rì Shí’s face and rubbing his thumb over her cheek to wipe away the other tears that land on her fur. Yuè Shí licks Nezha’s hand slowly, cooing and purring as if to comfort him, his own paws coming to wrap around his wrist and he presses his cheek against Nezha’s open palm. “How,” Nezha laughs softly, shocked at the way he smiles at the little twins, something strange and warm blooming in his chest, “are you so small?”
Quietly, Nezha wishes he could hate them. They are small and easy to forget about. They walk around the house and explore everywhere and touch everything they aren’t supposed to touch. They are needy and take away so much of the family’s attention and sleep just so they can take care of them in the dead of night. Nezha has woken up so many times to the sound of shrill chirps and other noises followed by the tired voices of a shadow and a golden light that go to comfort the cubs. Jealousy is not the word for it; he’s known that feeling before but it never lasted, it’s not something he would succumb to even if the world decided that his brother and sister were suddenly the favorites of bàba; Nezha cannot name the feeling he gets when Rī Shí looks at him with a furrowed brow and a pout nor the feeling that blossoms when Yuè Shí nibbles on his thumb with bright yellow eyes and a wagging tail of excitement.
Nezha doesn’t hate them.
The Lotus Prince leans down. He presses his forehead against the two cubs and smells the faint scent of peaches, smoke and mangos, the weirdest combination that makes him want to punch something and let his wounds reopen to send a message to the two that caused these two problems to stay by his side for the entirety of the day. Nezha doesn’t open his eyes when he feels two cold noses press against his cheeks, when there’s small coos and chirps that say what’s wrong? Why are you sad?, when the two monkeys burr softly and crawl to rest comfortably into his arms.
He opens his eyes when the wind blows softly and makes the little ones shiver. Nezha breathes in and exhales, standing up with ease as he holds the small sun and moon gently and takes them inside.
“..Are you hungry?” he asks the twins, closing the door to the garden with a soft click.

How does Bai He feels about the twins? Is she older enough when they are born to not be jealous or not being the baby of the house anymore was a big change for her?
I imagine, if she takes in a good way her new role as big sister, her reading baby books to them in a really soft voice or sing to em little songs. They are too young to understand but love to climb on her and coo
Also just, Bai He and the twins following Mac around the house like ducklings
Oh!! She loves them, actually
She didn't feel any jealousy towards them when she got word that she'd soon be having two little siblings to play with! She was very much moved to tears when she saw the twins and they grabbed at her hands and chirp quietly. She slept with them for the first few days up until she was told they needed to get used to sleeping on their own but she still accompanied them until they fell asleep before walking to her own room to sleep
I adore the idea of Bai He reading the twins baby books and singing to them. She does little noise effects and the twins eat it up, cooing and chirping excitedly when she tells them about old myths and tiny tales with their own spins because, let's face it, she's young and still believes the moon is made of cheese
She, Moonie and Sunny hold hands as they follow Macaque, actually. Bai He holds on to his tail with one hand and then holds the twins' hands with the other

"The mother of the chicks takes in this intruder of the family, another bird born to another mother, placed in their nest so the mother could feed and care for him. But as the chick grows he demands more and more, feeding the healthily growing young bird while neglecting the rest of her nest, ignoring their tired chirps and cries for days until, finally, the intruder is done with his foster mother and flies away from the nest." A thumb is pressed against the forehead of the unsuspecting cub, beady yellow eyes blinking curiously up at the god before tiny fingers wrap around the host's thumb, clinging to it with no fear nor hesitation. Nezha raises a brow. "And then the mother, with her dying scurry of chicks, realizes her mistake far too late, and when she goes to try and get them food—"
Rì Shí lets out a high-pitched squeal; her paws swat at Nezha's long hair, hissing and chuffing as she circles around him and her brother, tail swishing from side to side. She pretends to be this ferocious predator. Nezha stares at her with amusement in his eyes, using his free hand to hold up his chin, legs moving up and down as he lays on the cushioned floor of the living room. "Can I finish?" Nezha asks, using the pull from his mind to order the fiery sash to poke at the tiny thing's tummy. He watches Rì Shí tumble and fall back down into a sitting position, her eyes narrowed and her chirps coming out as angry. She swats at the sash and Yuè Shí joins her, naturally, removing his own paws from Nezha's thumb and crawling to his sister's side to play with the astra.
Nezha tilts his head, tipping his whole body along with him, letting out the lowest groan to pretend this is the most annoying thing he's witnessed so far. The twins chirp and swat at the sash, unbothered by the young god's noises of complaint, and it isn't until Nezha rolls once—taking the sash along with him—that the twins start to pay attention to him again, yellow and amber eyes staring at the Lotus Prince.
Nezha pats the space in front of him and watches as the two bundles of fur waddle their way over to him, chittering and chirping excitedly as they press up against the god's face, biting and pawing at him until Nezha scoops them up and puts them on his chest, laying flat on his back and, then, resting his arms over the two cubs to prevent them from escaping. There's a dim ring of sunlight that seeps through the open windows, the smell of peaches and blooming camellias slipping through the air; Nezha pokes Yuè Shí's nose and then, with a small smile, he says, "Let me finish the story and we can pretend to nap before Bàba gets back. Deal?"
The Eclipse twins let out a low coo, laying their chins against Nezha's chest, tails smacking against him gently and softly, their eyes staring at him expectantly.
With a sigh, Nezha lets his head fall back with a small thud, closing his eyes as he scratches the twin's heads gently. "So when the mother realizes her mistake.."

Ah! Sorry for bring back the dead Bai He thing,, but the twins?? Were they aready born when she dies or it happends years later?? Idk what is worst, having a dead sister and barelly remembering her or knowing that you could have an older sister if fate was kinder 💔 And im guessing Mac is even more protective of them than he was with Bai He
[valleys]
The twins were around long enough to learn Bai He's name and coo'd at her ice abilities despite being too young to use their own yet (and by that I mean they weren't aware of their own abilities since LBD and Xuan nullified them before someone took them away; after SWK and Macaque take them in, they start having little hiccups of their own powers here and there)
they loved their sister a lot and clung to her, whether on her back or legs and played with her often since the other humans and immortals were too old to keep up with them. they were really devastated when she died
in other aus it's typically either the same or they feel a bit of guilt.. also they realize it's why macaque is so distant towards them in the first place: he's scared to lose another kid

Hide n' Mischief
@winterpower98: (gives me a Lost N Found fanfic suggestion) me: I owe you my life. "If you think little siblings are easy.. you've probably never had one." (1.5k, written in a bit of a hurry due to a migraine but I hope it's enjoyable nonetheless! First time writing.. non-angst! Hope it's ok :'D )
————————————
“How long do we have?” “Three hours.” Yin squints at his phone, bringing the device closer to his phone before clicking his tongue, turning the screen towards his brother and saying, “Scratch that, two hours. Xiaojiao says Xiaotian’s gettin’ burnt out.” There’s a brief snap of anxiety that cuts through the air as the two demon twins stand in the middle of a messy room; blankets, pillows, cushions and clothes are scattered on the floor in disarray, footprints of mud and dirt covering the fabrics and turning the baby blue colors into a murky brown and gray, Jin’s own panic turning into mild annoyance at the sight of their mess. He picks up one of the blankets and makes a face of disgust, folding it over his arm and throwing it in the laundry basket.
“Yeah, well,” the older demon sniffs, clapping his hands clean of dust and grime. “They couldn’t have gone far.. Have we checked the garden?”
Yin nods, “Twice. We stomped on Pa’s gardenias, ‘member?”
“Fuck, right,” the old hisses, eyes narrowing as he kicks away a dragon plushie with far more force than necessary. From his peripheral he can make out his brother’s wince and grimace, stress lines forming under his eyes and the gold demon lets out a long sigh, pinching the skin between his eyes and trying to calm the panic beneath him.
Yuè Shí and Rì Shí were troublesome little things; they’d spent the day looking after the twins and scavenging in the bins of every room trying to locate Yin’s missing wrench, messing with Jin’s equipment for broadcasting and even managing to get the rest of the monkeys from the mountain involved on the action of misbehavior, nothing but happy chirps and mischief from the pair of demon monkeys. Yin had prided himself in the achievement of getting little Rì Shí to laugh, even though it only lasted for as long as he could hold her attention before she started to swat at him like an angry kitten. Yuè Shí yowled once or twice, screaming and kicking at the horned twins in demands of something and only calmed down when Jin let him climb on top and use his horns as a steering wheel for the golden twin. It’d been nice, enjoyable even for the older pair—but the small ones were still so full of energy midday that Yin suggested they play hide and seek for the sake of having a few minutes to catch his own breath, to which the monkey siblings eagerly agreed to.
The thing with monkeys, however, is that Yin and Jin were not, in fact, monkeys. They were more on the reptilian side, if anything—but the point is that they lost sight of the scamps roughly thirty minutes into the game and it soon turned into a wild goose chase of Where’s Waldo? without any actual clues or hints of where they could be. The amount of times Jin has crashed into his brother while calling out, “Come out, lass! I’ll give ya’ a cookie if ya’ do,” in a heap of anxiety and adrenaline could no longer be counted on one hand.
Yin looked through the kitchen cabinets and climbed inside only to get stuck; Jin almost broke one of Xiaotian’s figurines throwing pillows off the bed while tsk-ing; Yin broke one of Zhizhu’s old gifts for Nezha and quietly brushed it under the bed before leaving the room and locking it from the inside—a mess was left of the home and Jin could only grunt as he ushers his twin out of Xiaojiao’s room, muttering under his breath before kicking the door closed.
“Ehhh,” Yin pulls at his ear, scratching the skin before spinning on his feet, making a trumpeting noise as he does. He stops and claps his hands, pointing towards the bathroom and turns his head slightly, grinning widely, “They’re probably in the bathroom! We haven’t checked there.”
Jin stares.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake you eejit—Why would the scamps be in the bath?”
“‘Cause they were runnin’ ‘round with all that muck on their feet and Rì Shí doesn’t like being too muddy after what happened with Nezha’s shirt and all,” Yin replies thoughtfully, tapping his chin and nodding. “Aye, lil’ Yuè Shí ate all that pie, too, y’know?”
“So?”
“His tummy’s gotta be full.”
“Then he’d have a stomachache, what of it?”
“He always hides when he’s sick!” Yin makes a wide-eyed expression overtake his face, white irises widening alongside it when Jin stares at him with a frown. “Ya don’t remember the New Years dinner?”
“I don’t—Okay! Okay, fine, we can check the bath and see if they’re there. Better than wastin’ time.” Jin lets Yin take the lead, the silver demon smugly making his way down the hall and making small clicking noises. The two of them had never quite managed to replicate the chirps and perfect pitched squeaks the other members of the family have been able to make, more so for lack of understanding of their purpose—something about being able to locate each other—but they compromised on their own set of sounds for the younger ones to follow. They were small enough to understand a noise meant to share their location but the rascals probably thought the game was still going. Damn monkeys.
Yin opens the door unceremoniously. With a kick.
It slams against the wall and for the first time in a year Jin is thankful that there are no neighbors to hear him cuss out his younger twin for potentially startling the smaller monkeys. The two exchange a look before checking every cabinet door and small crook in the room. Jin peeked inside the toilet then regretted the decision because there was nothing there (as expected).
Jin sniffs and flicks his hands rapidly, letting out a quick, “Y’all better help clean up, I swear,” as he pulls the curtains back, almost miserably falling over at the sight of three plushies soaked to the bone resting in the middle of the shower. He screams reasonably and takes a step back, bumping into Yin and causing the two to fall backwards, colliding with the tiled floor seconds later. The twins lay there in pain, groaning and hisses under their breath; Yin shoves Jin off of him and lets out a huff of pain, squinting at his twin when the golden demon looks at him.
“Bruv?” says Jin.
“Aye?” Yin sniffs, still squinting.
“Why’re there plushies in the shower?” Jin points at the curtains with his freed arm, unwilling to move a couple of inches to set free his other one, crushed under the weight of his mistakes and sins and regret for accepting the quest of taking care of a twin pair of evildoers. His brother narrows his eyes further to the point where they’re already somewhat closed before shrugging, his face smooshing against the floor in defeat. The golden demon sniffs and lets his head fall back and stares up at the ceiling.
The ceiling.
The.. ceiling.
Jin blinks; he watches in absolute horror and realization as two little balls of fur huddle closer to the far ends of the ceiling, snickering to themselves quickly in the corner and letting their tails swish back and forth in glee. For a split second, Rì Shí looks over their shoulder before squeaking and going back to huddling with their twin, delight and mirth in her beady little yellow eyes that does nothing to soothe the rising anger from the golden demon twin.
“You!” Jin squawks, startling Yin enough to force the silver demon to sit up straight alongside him. His tail smacks against the floor and his voice betrays him by letting out a laugh as he shouts, “Ya little shits! How long have ya’ been hidin’ up there!?”
“Wh—Oh, for fuck’s—” Yin wheezes, letting out a squabble of mirth and laughter as he gestures to the pair hysterically, grin widening as the little monkeys startle and, soon, scramble upsidedown out of the bathroom, their small tails wagging excitedly as Jin stands up in a rush, accidentally smacking Yin in the process. The silver demon yelps and pulls at his brother’s leg, causing Jin to stumble forward and nearly crash into the table stand holding up several family pictures and one of Nezha’s old toys.
“Don’t ya pull on my leg, ya prick!”
“Don’t smack me then!”
Jin sneers at his twin—only to catch himself and start running towards the living room, yelling out the monkey twins' names after he chases after them. He crashes into the sofa after leaping up to try and grab Yuè Shí but the monkey scrambled out of reach before he could grab them. He watches in pure shock as Yin propels himself forward and dives head first into the wall, narrowly missing Rì Shí’s tail by a couple of inches, the little monkey giggling and snickering before joining her twin on top of the ceiling fan.
There’s a quiet pause that’s shortly interrupted by Yin’s cough.
“We tell Da’ there was a demon attack, aye?” the silver demon groans miserably, peeling himself off the wall and brushing his palm against his eye.
“Aye,” Jin echoes, blinking slowly. He pauses and then, “We don’t tell Nezha ‘bout the broken lamp, either.”
“Never!”
“We take it to the grave.”
They eventually managed to get twin monkeys down.
Eventually.
