Fan trans VS official trans: The Spotted Seal And The Wolf

Sorry it took a while to get back to the comparing of translations.

When an octopus asks Legoshi and Zaguan to help her find her kidnapped daughter, Zaguan says in the fan translation that they are better than the sea police.

But in the official trans, he says that Legoshi is better than the sea police. It actually makes sense for him to say that since Legoshi has experience and training in how to handle this sort of situation due to his training with Gohin and experience hunting Melon with Yafta. Also, he is a wolf, he is pretty great at tracking animals down.

Oh, and not sure I ever pointed it out, but Zaguan's name in the official manga is Sagwan.

When they find the girl octopus... or what is left of her... the goat seller advertise it and says it is served with sweet and spicy sause.

In the official translation, he says "sweet and savory."

The official translation is less harsh. In fan he says a prevert would come dressed to a sea funeral but in official trans he says "weirdo."

Somewhat same sentence, the difference being level of harshness.

The words are more or less the same in both translations, but in the fan trans the letters in the octopus mother's speech balloon are different from the ones normally used to show she doesn't speak the same language as Legoshi. That's a very nice detail, so point to fan trans.

When Zaguan tells Legoshi what the octo-mom said, he says she told them to make themselves at home in the fan trans.

In official trans, he says she hoped they would enjoy the funeral ceremony.

Legoshi says the ceremony doesn't feel like a funeral in the fan trans, but in the official trans he says the ceremony is practical and unsentimental. The latter almost feels judgmental.

I just remembered about this crackship idea I had and I wanna get your opinion on it: do you think Gouhin x Saguan would work

Turns out I had more thoughts than I thought and wrote a whole little outline so

Weirdly yeah. I don't know how it'd start or what you'd do with it but they seem like they'd get on really well, Gouhin knows enough about sealife to accomodate Saguan, he's knowledgeable enough to answer any questions he has about life on land, stern enough to keep him from doing any wildly inappropriate stuff without thinking.

For Saguan's part I think just having his general happy-go-lucky vibe would help Gouhin's mood, he might get annoyed in the moment but on the whole, the hospital staff and patients would all love him. You could honestly stick Saguan next to anyone and I think they'd work, Saguan would be exactly the same in any relationship he ever gets in.

The only thing that I think might be tricky about it is sealife probably has very different views on romance and such. For the sake of the show we can assume animal mating habits don't matter cause romance in Beastars is analagous to humans but I don't think that'd be true in the ocean.

I imagine the relationship would start with Saguan just deciding their boyfriends one day, they've been hanging out and like each other and that's all the understanding he really has of what dating means. Gouhin finds out about this like 2 weeks later and it takes him a little more time to warm up to the idea but is happy to go along with it.

But spotted seals are only annually monogamous. It might go a little longer with Gouhin because that period is usually tied to having pups but just as suddenly as he decided they were dating one day he decides they're just not. Again Gouhin didn't get the memo but at this point they've been getting physical and affectionate so one day they're just hanging out and Saguan won't kiss him anymore.

Lots of messy arguments where Saguan isn't even totally sure what he did wrong, Gouhin trying to sort out what Saguan's whole deal is and if he's really that innocently naive about everything or just a gigantic asshole. For their sake I hope they work it out, Saguan only really needs to hear that on land people date indefinitely unless they stop liking each other and picks up right where they left off.

I don't think they'd get married or grow old together or anything like that, Gouhin would start protecting his heart a little more, he really loved Saguan but he's very aware again that he'll never really get a read on him and nothing's guaranteed. Saguan always intended on moving back to the sea someday anyway. But in the meantime they're very happy together and wouldn't have it any other way.

This isn't something where I have enough material to write an essay, but it's something where I nonetheless want to make it clear that this is one of the many Beastars-related hills I will gladly die on:

Zaguan is Beastars's Jar-Jar Binks.

He's a character from an underwater world whose primary purpose is to be wacky comic relief due to his strange underwater world customs and his lack of understanding of surface world customs, and it's obvious that somebody in the production chain really fuckin' likes him because suddenly he keeps showing up way more often than he has any right or need to (why is Jar-Jar now the senator from Naboo and the author of Palpatine's Enabling Act? why does Zaguan get a full chapter of denouement where nothing happens PLUS a Beast Complex chapter when much more established characters like Jack & the 701 boys, Gouhin, the Cherryton drama club, and the Shishigumi barely even get a page each?).

I'm sorry, but these are the same character, and they serve about the same level of narrative utility.
