fe17 thoughts (part 1)

first round of engage thoughts... i just beat chapter 17 but this is mostly about the firene gang so probably only spoilers for the early game

probably the worst FE in terms of line writing; ppl rag on fates for bad writing but mainly for plot holes/concept but i didn’t mind fe14 on a line level. there have certainly been more times during engage where the actual lines characters were given felt very amateurish.

in terms of characterization, i feel this game is probably the weakest as well. the character gimmicks are fine to me (none feel very egregious at this point) but i think the characters are hurt by how short the supports are. i think these are the shortest supports in an FE game? generally i feel like in FE, supports generally each contain a full story beat so a support chain will consist of 3 separate encounters, usually with at 1 or 2 reversals in there, but fe17 supports sometimes take all 3 levels to cover just one story beat (i.e. the b support picks up directly where the c support conversation left off, rather than being a new conversation resulting from the characters getting to know each other better). that gives the impression the characterization is much shallower than in other FE games. but i’m not convinced it... needed to be this way? there are moments where i feel like some characters DO have other things going on for them other than the 1 gimmick/character trait from their c-support.. i’ll revisit this when i’ve unlocked more a-supports i guess

like many people, i was taken aback by Alear’s design but I’ve mostly come around to it. I played M!Alear because he has less hair to look at. ppl have criticized the divine dragon thing being an excuse for protagonist worship but I don’t mind it; the game plays with how being worshipped is actually something uncomfortable for Alear and there’s a minor recurring theme about the nature of worship in Elyos which is a little juicy

mixed feelings on framme/clanne (i always want to write framme/cramme lol). probably least fav christmas cavs, which is a feat when alan/lance exist. i actually do think the Divine Dragon Fan Club is very funny... but i don’t like either of their designs and i feel like.... they’re annoying??

alfred is a wannabe himbo and i love that for him. it’s an interesting choice to give him that personality but make him look like That. i liked most of his supports; he is very funny.

reserving judgment of celine until i’ve gotten her later supports. she does talk about tea a lot but i sense she does have more going on; i like that she’s more canny and mature than a lot of kind younger sister types. i feel like a lot of the character supports are padded by polite pleasantries but celine sometimes cuts through the niceties in a way that suggests there’s more going on with her?? i will return to this point after i get more supports. i do like her design; she is cute and her big poofy dress is funny.

chloe is pretty. i think her thing with eating weird foods is funny as well, but the writers (possibly localizers, could be in the original jp context as well) missed the mark with calling the food “folk food.” it would be one thing if what she was eating was actually established in lore to be what commoners or regional peasants eat as a fact of the world. we do have a lot of noble characters who could be aghast by that. but we also have characters from poorer backgrounds and nobody eats what chloe is shown to be eating, so it doesn’t feel like honest world building when chloe lectures other characters about the authenticity of weird regional delicacies

(but it could have been funny if chloe could only cook weird things that no one else likes in the cafe)

louis’s thing with watching ppl is a little uncomfy for me but i could change my mind at some point. i do like his green eyes when he opens them, and i like that they do have him open them at times; that endears the character to me. i like that he’s a pushy big brother to zelkov

limited thoughts on boucheron; i do like his reactions to alfred and etie harassing him and he makes a good straight man to them. “those are my abs” from the etie support was great. his model does make it abundantly clear that the shoulders on the adult male model are too broad, so that’s distracting.

i actually like most of the firene gang on their own... but as a group they are too nice lol and it makes most of the conversations/supports in the early game feel kind of bland and samey.

ESPECIALLY QUEEN EVE; i feel like her design is very regal, proud, and borderline-could-be-a-bitch but then she just is a normal nice lady, so i was disappointed.

as a side note, to all the people (on reddit) who keep saying they wrote etie to be a buff bodybuilder but didn’t draw her as one... they didn’t write her to be a buff bodybuilder. they wrote her to aspire to be a buff bodybuilder, but she struggles to put on muscle like alfred does, read the words on the screen, i beg of you.

thought jean would be a stronger unit but he’s... not that good for me; i feel like... qi adepts aren’t good???? i don’t mind that he and anna are children but i have seen some criticism of their ages.

anna is cute. i have the same criticism of her as i do with all post-fe12 anna’s, which is that fe12 anna is best anna. the money thing is more toned down in engage, which i appreciate. she is so little. i think she has good growths but i haven’t noticed her being that good because mine is flimsy as paper.

gameplay-wise, the emblems are really fun. this is a new level of unit customization for Fire Emblem. class changing/skills were serviceable before but they required grinding and some level of commitment to them, whereas i’ve been swapping emblems on and off characters very liberally so the way i play each unit changes between battles. that is very neat.

edelgard/dimi/claude is my favorite emblem; fallen star is very good, atrocity is strong but less useful, raging storm is mostly not useful due to the cost but i’ve used it once. tiki is good as well as she’s strong; i’ve not noticed her increased growths having that much effect but could be because i swap her on and off people.

for base game emblems, i think probably... micaiah > lyn > sigurd > byleth > celica > eirika > corrin > ike > lucina > leif > marth > roy

i haven’t used leif and roy that much so they could be better than i recall.

unit-wise, i don’t think i’ve noticed many stand outs for me? everyone is roughly usable, and i’ve trained everyone but clanne and vander (i’m in desperate need of more master seals)

everyone is saying you need to promote at level 10. THERE’S NOT ENOUGH MASTER SEALS TO DO THAT. i promoted everyone at level 20 and i still have people sitting there waiting for master seals.

speaking of not having enough of a resource, i’m also very poor. i upgraded all countries to level 2 to get their regional clothes but the level 3 is TOO EXPENSIVE. i have a lot of gold skirmishes but they’re rough to do bc they’re pretty high level and if i use my high level guys, those guys will level up, and then the skirmish level will INCREASE MORE. this is... like a punishment for sisyphus

they buffed armors so much that mages are really indispensable. hammers and armorslayers... do not work lol

i appreciate that they gave us lots of shiny staves to use, and pretty early too. i have not used them.

i guess alear is my strongest unit??? they’re pretty dodgy but didnt stop marni from ONE SHOTTING ME.

i’ll do brodia gang next; i have lots of thoughts on them. i’m recording these for future me’s reference, but i’m happy to hear other people’s thoughts too!

1 - What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

As far as canon ships go? Romione, honestly. I don't hate it I just don't see the appeal, personally. I don't think they're actually the best fit for each other, romantically speaking, but I won't like... refuse to read a fic over that or something. I just keep putting them both in other pairings when I write HP fics LOL

2 - Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

Marauder x marauder ships. I'm at a point now where I'll read wolfstar if the premise of the fic outside the ship is REALLY appealing to me but I genuinely have always hated Marauder x Marauder ships of any combo, since the very beginning. I just really value relationships with a deep level of love that isn't romantic, and I think adding romance between any of them cheapens it, IMO. The number of times I've been called homophobic for this opinion is absolutely staggering considering that I aM GAY askdfjgnkfl

3 - Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?

Honestly probably, I've been on here since I was like 13 and I used to be way more impulsive LMFAO, but I can't remember anything specific for HP tbfh. Marvel is usually what makes me go “nope I can’t do this” and unfollow someone asjkdfgn

4 - Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

P much covered this already I think buuut since we're all OC people here I WILL get messy and say that I dry heave every time I run across an OC fic on the archive that's, like, a currently enrolled Hogwarts student....... and their professor??? Why is that such a fad. When will it die. PLEASE let it die.

14 - Unpopular opinion about your fandom?

It's not as cringey as ppl make it out to be now??? Like, not in the JKR sense — there's some deeply rooted ethical issues in the way some of her political thinking seeped into the fine print of the world she made, but like the story itself... idk I just see a lot of "ugh just grow up" attitudes about it now and it's silly to me. For all its flaws, HP explored a lot of deep themes and introduced that to a lot of kids. I was one of those kids from a very broken home who got to see themselves in Harry and grow up with him and, WOW THIS GOT TOO DEEP ANYWAY what I'm saying is it's not just a silly kid's story and it's not as simple as "find another book to read" like so many people say now. The world is so vast and Hogwarts really did become HOME at such a young age for a lot of people, and walking away from the emotional investment in that is a lot less simple than ppl want to act.

15 - Unpopular opinion about the manga/show movies?

The movies got a few (minor) things better than the books. Idk why the wardrobe always comes to mind first but sometimes I'm writing fic and I realize that the "students wearing muggle clothing outside of class/formal events" originated with the movies and not the books and I just cannot lmfao I refuse to accept the robes 24/7 give these children some COMFORT and INDIVIDUALITY can u tell i was not sent to a school with a uniform?? i think u can tell

16 - If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?

The names of Harry's children. If I could change ONE THING and ONE THING ONLY, that would be it. Do not even get me started holy shit

17 - Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…

Percy dies instead of Fred, and the "urban myth" (I guess???) that Hermione was originally supposed to be endgame with Fred happens. But Zel how does that make more sense than Romione to you, she also argued with Fred a lot— LISTEN they have more in common in terms of how they approach their goals and challenges in life, they have a certain shared ambitious quality (though reaching for dif end goals, obviously) that Ron doesn’t share (and that’s not an insult to him!!! I just think what he wants in life and how he wants to get there is v different!! don’t come at me ajsdfl), and the back and forth was FUNNY, the GoF movie scene banter with Hermione right before they put their names in for the tournament has lived RENT FREE in my head since I was in middle school okay it's too late I am too far gone—

Like I said I don't interact much with fandom outside the writing sphere so with THAT in mind... I feel like HP fic (and Game of Thrones, tbfh) draws a lot of wildly pretentious feedback??? More than other fandoms I've written for??? I get the strangest reviews sometimes, people write like they're one of my college professors grading my work and have a bunch of back-handed compliments and it's SO ODD. I almost prefer the straight up hate reviews I get in other fandoms lol.

20 — What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Luna and Neville. Forever canon in my heart they are simply TOO PRECIOUS together.

Uh. I have none, essentially? Not my cup of tea to pursue a lot but the memes make me laugh. Drapple is unmatched

The only people I know who haven't read HP are old church friends who weren't allowed as kids bc it has magic in it and was therefore “satanic”. (See also: Chronicles of Narnia. Despite Aslan literally being furry jesus.) It's been over a decade since then so I hope they've read it since then, among hopefully some other lifestyle changes... 💀

25 — How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?

In my ideal HP ending, Harry winds up working as a professor after helping round up all the MIA Death Eaters and playing a season or two of pro quidditch whilst getting some intense therapy. Fuck that ministry noise. Harry James Potter is composed 99% of Problems With Authority, you cannot tell me that boy turned into a magical cop. Who’s gonna stop the guy who saved the world from chasing baddies independently????? NO ONE

✍Favorite thing about writing the muse?

EVERYTHING!! It’s hard to just pinpoint one thing I love about a/lttp Zel when there’s everything I love about her, aside from sky Zel she’s legit my fav Zel (And by extension a/lbw she’s a cutie poot and has more of a personality in there!!) I do find her intelligence to be quite refreshing compared to most characters I play who either dense or just average, while I’m not at all confident in writing smart characters I can only hope that my characterization of her showcases her more wise side and it’s always so much fun to write her playfully bully other characters should she feel comfortable enough around them, she’s often very polite so I always look forward to Zel forming new friendships to show this side of her. Then there’s her determination to do whatever she can to protect the people and her kingdom, she sincerely loves her people and Hy/rule, wanting what’s best for them and whatnot.

Though I know that this Zel is mostly headcanon base with both manga influence and minor, minor game as well ;v; I feel a bit arrogant saying that I like Zel this way actually haha...

😈Worst thing you’ve ever done to your muse?

UHM in one of my threads, she’s actually stabbed a possessed Link by accident when trying to wrestle him with a sword since at the time he was trying to kill her during her pilgrimage in praying to the spirits of light no less. She’s devasted that she caused harm to the person that she cares a lot about. Spoiler alert, she’s going to be so freaking sad throughout the whole thread until... things happen. Legend and I sorta planned out the direction of where we want to go next!

💡What inspires you to write the muse?

Uhm, good question. Inspiration is sorta tricky with me, it just strikes whenever it wants. During Depression Months™ aka winter where I have a lot of depressive episodes than manic, it’s so hard to write and zero inspiration comes to me hence my radio silence during the winter months.

📑Favorite part of your muse’s backstory?

Sadly, Z/elda has a basic backstory, it’s nothing exciting so I can’t really say sorry. Unless you count the events of A/lttp then, in that case, it’s my favorite part of her backstory!

📝Favorite headcanon for your muse?

NGL I’M PRETTY PROUD OF HOW HER MAGIC WORKS, since it explains both why she doesn’t show too much of the Light Force during Alttp despite (according to canon) that power being with the royal family since forever as well as how potent it is despite not being able to use all of it which also explains why she was used for sacrifice twice now. So ye ye!! Pretty happy with that, although SSBU decided to come out of nowhere and say “actually she’s been able to do this sort of magic”.

💭Favorite memory of the muse?

Again, she doesn’t really have a lot going on in her backstory so it’s hard to pinpoint this. Although, I will forever love the idea of tiny Zel being slightly tomboyish and a bit of a troublemaker: having no problem with hunting minish or sneaking out to either read some more or stealing a quick sweet treat and I will forever die on this hill.

😩Hardest thing about writing the muse?

Showing how smart she is. I am not smart, how do smart people think? I do not know but I do worry about not being able to show that properly.

⌨What’s a situation you’ve always wanted to RP with the muse?

EXPLORING DUNGEONS LET’S GO!!! Once I finally get around to beating SSBU, I’d love to do the World of Light thread where she’s a puppet. Writing evil Zelda would be so much fun I feel despite the fact that I’m not very good with writing villains, which sucks because sometimes I tend to like them.
