Nickname story time!
So when I was in middle school, I started learning to pick pocket (STRICTLY FOR FUN, I gave everything back) and would use this newfound skill to mess with my friends. I moved to a new town my freshmen year of HS. In those first few days, I made a friend and tried to impress them by taking their wallet, and it did make them laugh when I gave it back, so I felt pretty good. Later that day we were talking to some other new friends and my first friend told them, "This one took my wallet earlier like a dirty pirate!"
So Pirate I became. The whole school knew me as "Pirate" for the rest of my time there, and to this day, many still call me that. Thankfully, I love pirates ☠️ so this was fine by me.

@chaotic-archaeologist don't be shy tell them about the socks. Field socks, and at what point do you condemn them to be burned because there is no saving them!
Listen, I know that I am incredibly privileged to get to pursue this level of education, but I also have to do basic stuff like laundry and professors clearly have not thought of that

@chaotic-archaeologist I feel SO called out and I'm gonna need you to get ALL the way off my back 😆
Remember that Ben and Jerry's ice cream can be a great enrichment for your archaeologist after they have to go indoors because the field season is over. Watching them scraping the ice cream down layer by layer and then piece plot every fudge brownie including is so cute.
Feel free to share other care and keeping tips for archaeologists!!!

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a slapping,
As of some one gently flapping, flapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some fairy,” I muttered, “slapping at my chamber door—
            Only this and nothing more.”

ACTUAL archaeological mysteries
* How do tarps go missing between field seasons?
* Why do I not have as much success with grants as others?
* How did we lose a datum? It’s a frickin concrete cylinder in the ground!
* Can you read this person’s field notes? Because I can’t.
* Is this a bone or a rock?
* Which Munsell number is closest to this layer?
* Is this a sherd or a very convincing rock?
* We’ve had weeks to excavate. Why are we always rushing on the last few days?
* Was that previously recorded artifact scatter plowed to oblivion?

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king."
Whenever I see the popular phrase "not all who wander are lost" used for water bottles or artsy bumper stickers on Jeeps and credited to an ""anonymous"" author I get so annoyed. Like, excuse me, that line was written by famed hobbit poet and historian Bilbo Baggins, from his poem about Aragorn son of Arathorn, the long awaited Heir of Isildur, who is destined to restore order to the race of Men return glory to the White City of Minas Tirith. We know exactly who wrote this quote, nothing "anonymous" about it.

I will never get over how weird it feels to have tragic and emotional chapters of your life where you just also still go to work, and the grocery store, and see funny videos online all while feeling such paralyzing fear and heartache
life just goes on no matter what
