Crush by Tracy Wolff

This was a good followup to the first book. Still not blown away by the quality of the writing, but I still very much enjoyed the story. Once again, the author has a weird obsession with starting sentences with “For long seconds…”, but at least had the decency to switch it up and use it in the middle of a sentence a few times. Going forward, I’ll have to count how many times she uses the phrase in each book. I have learned that the author also has a poor sense of time when it comes to her own story. In the first book, it is mentioned thatJaxon’s brother died 7 months before the book starts. That books spans about 2 weeks. Crush begins 4 months after the end of the first, and Hudson’s death is mentioned as being 16 months ago, when it should only be about 12 months. Grace is also “gone” for 3 months and 21 days, according to Jaxon, but then a few pages later he says she was “gone” for 121 days, but that should only be 111 days. The author also creates a game (Ludares) and then forgets the rules she made for said game. According to her, each player on the team has to touch the ball at least once before crossing the end zone. But later while they’re playing, the ball has been held by 2 people on the team and about to reach the end zone, and Grace is surprised that the game is about to end so easily, completely forgetting that 6 more people (including herself) needs to have the ball, otherwise the other team wins. I’m probably being too nitpicky, but it kinda pulls me out of the story when I have to go back and reread sections because I feel like I misread or misunderstood something, when really the author is just inconsistent.
Favorite Quote:
“I’ll never make you choose, Grace. How could I when I know that you’d never choose me?”

Crave by Tracy Wolff

I didn’t realize I was missing kinda trashy teenage vampire romances until I read this book. Is it the best book I’ve ever read? No. Was it entertaining nonetheless? Yes. Will I finish the series? Most likely. The story is interesting enough for me to ignore the sometimes meh writing. The author has a somewhat annoying habit of starting sentences with “For long seconds…”. And it seems like the author will find a great word in the thesaurus or specific phrase, use it multiple times in that chapter, and then never again, which gives the writing a repetitive feel at times. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the immaturity of the (teenage) characters, and I think that comes from the use of “OMG” and “FML” and the like in the narration. But considering it’s told from the POV of a 17 year old, it makes sense. It’s a little odd, but I also know that’s how I wrote in my diary when I was that age, so it doesn’t really bother me. Overall I enjoyed this book, and I will promptly be starting the next one.
Favorite Quotes:
“There’s not much to be afraid of when you’ve already lost everything that matters.”
“Grief is a wild thing within me, a rabid animal tearing at my insides and making everything hurt.”

The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna
6/15/2023-8/10/2023
5 Stars
The only reason this took me so long to read is because my dang ADHD brain wouldn’t allow me to give this book the attention it deserves. I loved The Gilded Ones, and this was such an amazing followup. Namina Forna has created such a fascinating world with this series. Things did not go where I was expecting them to, and it was so much better than I could have anticipated. I was laughing and crying and on the edge of my seat the whole time. I’m very impatiently waiting for the third and final book in this series.

Not in the Cards by Amy Cissell

SPOILERS
I honestly don’t know why I didn’t DNF this. Looking back at my Kindle notes annoys me all over again. The adult characters feel childish and like it was written by a teenager. I liked the idea of it, which is what kept me reading, but I definitely won’t continue the series. I have nothing but complaints, so I guess let’s get into them.
For an author that praises her editor and husband/“proofreader”, there are so many mistakes. A character’s name is wrong twice. Character’s discuss an event happening on Christmas Day, and then a page or so later, they talk about that same event happening on New Year’s Day. There’s also some sort of tension between Bill and Drew, but who knows what that is. Several times they are in the same room, and the author always goes on about “pain flashing across” one of their faces, or how one of them looks angry when he sees the other, but it is never actually explained in this book. If you’re going to make a big deal about it, then please, just tell the rest of us. I’m not reading multiple books just to hear some brief backstory on 2 side characters. Sandy is also in the middle of a divorce, and the fact that she falls in love with Vincent in less than a week is a little wild, especially considering how opposed she was to dating at the beginning of the book. They’re already discussing marriage at the end of the book, and they’ve known each other like a month at that point. If I were actually going to read the rest of the series, I would fully expect a wedding in the 2nd book, considering how unrealistically fast they’re moving.
