Dearest Under The Pink, you’re dirty 30 today!! The ethereal badass- Pretty Good Year is the perfect opener- soft with a thunderous bridge, with classic 90’s imagery like burning CD’s, the cry to heaven critique of God,the melancholy sigh of Bells For Her (who I spent the most time with today), the knowledge that Time will always march on and that loss is inevitable. Past The Mission most represents the Taos setting in which the record was recorded with her church and desert imagery, while Baker Baker is one of the places where the strings really come through and are a counterpoint to God and Past The Mission. The thing that sticks out to me this year is the push and pull of “hard” and “soft,” and Space Dog is another great example the deliciously non-linear contast between the sonic texture of the “Mr. Microphone” parts and the “Deck The Halls” exemplifies the special structures of a lot of these songs, and of course Waitress, who maybe is the queen of the songs with a flash of a jagged edge. The introspective reflection of Cloud On My Tongue and Icicle shine with more delicate strings, and I love the improvisational slightly off kilter sound of Bells For Her and the intro to Icicle-those are perfection to me. Bells is one of the few instances where I prefer the studio version-it’s raw, breathy, and so sad. You hear the piano breathe, you hear Tori breathe, and it’s perfect. Then we have Yes, Anastasia: THEE strings ob the record, period. She really is a sonic impressionist painting, like Tori says, and transcendent vocals, and the thud of T taking her foot of the pedal is like a punctuation mark. I listened to The Wrong Band and more than ever she stuck out like a sore thumb. Even though I love her, she has such a b-side vibe, like Daisy Dead Petals, and Honey should have been on the record-she’s another that to me really emotes the Southwest. All The Girls Hate Her always brings to my mind images of Tori playing at her hotel job (that she mentions on Storytellers), and Over It is just a bomb ass bitch and one of my favorite Tori songs of all time. Sister Janet is muted colors witchy one, and always makes me think of Jim because he’s my master shaman. Black Swan is one of those very few I haven’t ever really connected with, but she’s really pretty. And Home On The Range is the much older sister of Scarlet’s Walk. UTP, you are an undulating, glittering sky of marmalade and Western vistas, church and the secret messages that come through the ether of growing up as a girl, or just a sensitive person who knows they think too much and are thankful for your existence, or both. I love you. Happy Birthday (there’s blood on my hands 💗💗💗

““Under the Pink is a place. It's an internal place. It's the inner world, the inner life. You have to listen from your stomach. To me, it's all there. But you've got to be willing to put your moccasins on and walk down the road." ~ Tori Amos 🎹
30 years of Tori’s second masterpiece “Under the Pink” album 🎵🎹🤍”
Lance says:
And of course the fanboy in me has to write on every UTP appreciation posts: The album peaked at No.1 on the UK Album Chart and is certified platinum. “Cornflake Girl” and “Pretty Good Year” both UK Top 10 hits. And Tori received the ‘International Female Solo Artist’ nomination at the 1995 ‘Brit Awards’ 🙌🏻

"On [Under The Pink]; under the concept of woman. That's really what we are talking here.
In 'God,' the strength of woman, the heartbreak of women: there is no resolve with some women. In 'Past the Mission,' desperately wanting to break free from being a victim and having Trent [Reznor] come, the raging man, but being very supportive of the woman. In 'Baker, Baker,' saying 'I am the one that hasn't been able to be intimate.' In 'The Wrong Band,' the hooker is saying "I have a voice that's worth believing. I got in over my head."
The consciousness is divided. You're either looking at who you are, or you're not.. 'The Waitress,' the rage, the betrayal.... Then it's 'Tori, what right do you have to judge her?' Then it sums it up: 'but I believe in peace, bitch.' I mean that's really it. It's hanging onto your beliefs but one hand's on her neck... get out of the room quick, she's not worth it. It's not your job. Why can't you just see that she doesn't get it?
"And when they are in a position, some of these women, to hurt other woman... it just... you want to rip their heads off. 'Cornflake Girl,' that's the initial betrayal, the whole seed of the division. Cornflakes and raisins: cereal. 'Icicle,' the little girl reclaiming her numb parts, her sexuality that was lost with her religion, 'Cloud on My Tongue' dealing with Eve... dealing with feeling inferior, that somebody else has something that you want...
'Space Dog:' we've worshipped everything else, why not him? And of course 'Anastasia,' which is the final of the finale."
...It doesn't read like a diary like [Little Earthquakes]. It's definitely reader participation. This is not about voyeurism. This is not about looking in. This is about you have to crawl into the painting and take yourself there."

Dearest Boys For Pele, you are 28 today! Insane. You are gorgeous. You are iconic. From the opaque cascade of Beauty Queen/Horses, Southern Baroque grit of Blood Roses and Talula, the jaunty surrealism of Mr. Zebra, to the ancient incantation of Caught A Lite Sneeze, the tender contemplation of Hey Jupiter, the sultry bounce of In The Springtime Of His Voodoo, the wounded seethe of Doughnut Song, and sad reminiscence of To The Fair Motor Maids of Japan-you’re an epic novel in sonic form. Divine anger, simmering sadness, the poetry of pain, and grief of romantic loss are all encapsulated in your narrative. You’re Kali incarnate. You’re a fucking badass bitch and I love you. Happy Birthday!!

Happy Birthday, Little Earthquakes! 32 years ago on this day, you shook the world with your bold vulnerability, honesty, poetry, passion, and power.
Crucify was my introduction to Tori, and when a perfect place to start! But every song on this record is earth shattering. She’s a bad bitch! Winter has such fragility, yet there’s a driving toward a frozen sea near the end. Mother is a rare example of a studio version I prefer over live versions.Me And A Gun will stand alone forever as one of the bravest artistic statements ever.
And of course we must pay homage to Y Kant Tori Read, because without her failure, Tori would not have had to do her serious soul searching, go back to the drawing board, and share stories that are living forever as songs that help so many of us in self discovery, telling our own stories, and healing.
Happy Birthday, LE!!

Happy (belated/yesterday) Birthday to this beautiful record. When she was released, my dream expectation was that the songs would make me feel the same way all the Christmas music of my childhood makes me feel-deeply nostalgic, contemplative, overwhelmed by the magic, beauty, and love of family traditions that makes my heart grow three sizes. To my admitted surprise, Tori nailed it!! From the harpsichord lullaby of Nowell, to the reimagined fire of Star Of Wonder, the sentimental love letter of A Silent Night With You, the Medieval memoriam of Candle/Coventry Carol, the moonlit snow dream of Snow Angel, the verdant, bounding lift of Holly, Ivy, and Rose, the austere hymn of Emmanuel, the NYC boozy swing of Pink and Glitter, the mystical dark forest fairytale of Winter’s Carol, the smiling through the pain orchestral grandeur of Our New Year, the historical fiction Sonic photograph of Comfort & Joy, the lilting cradle song of Silent Night, and the midnight trek of Good King Wenceslas-it’s all festive the Tori way-from a historical storytelling point of view. It’s perfect (I don’t like Jeanette, Isabella much at all, but I love everything else. She’s everything I need in a Christmas album! Yay Midwinter Graces!! 13?!!

Holy shit her cover of Kendrick Lamar’s Swimming Pool is coming out tomorrow! This is the art for it-I love that they used this picture and made it more dreamy. I guess Tash is on the song, which surprised me for some reason, but I’m a fan, so yay! Tnx Jayne
