In defence of Isildur
Isildur is a character that was done dirty by Peter Jacksons movie adaptations of the Lord of the Rings, when Cirdan and Elrond told him to destroy the ring he claimed it as a weregild, a totally normal thing for any person to do that was just completely traumatized by the death of their father and brother and was pretty grief-stricken at the moment. After one year however, he wrote in the scroll of Isildur that he had noticed that the ring was evil and that, although he said he wanted to do it no harm, he went north through the Gladden fields to reencounter his wife and son in Imladris, but also to ask Elrond for counsel on the ring. If he had gotten the counsel to destroy it, I doubt that the saviour of Nimloth's fruit would have at least tried very hard.
