Time for Spells
[platonic Bruno x OC story]
Part 1
A young, disheveled Bruno shot up from bed. A distant crashing sound had ended his sleep abruptly. His frantic eyes quickly darted across his bedroom, finally softening and resting on a small piece of pottery shattered on the floor. His eyes traced the wall upward, and were met one of his panicked little friends on the shelf where the potted plant used to call home. His face relaxed into a soft smile as he scooted to the edge of his bed. He slipped into his sandals and quietly made his way over to the shelf, careful not to step on a shard of terracotta.
“Ah don’t worry, I’m not mad at you,” he said while slowly extending his hand to the frightened rodent. Bruno patiently waited on the small creature to sniff his fingers before finally climbing into his hand. His smile grew as he gave the rat chin scratches to calm it down. After a noticeable change in disposition, he gently placed his friend on his shoulder so he could focus on cleaning up the mess.
“Accidents happen
” he carefully separated the plant from the mix of dirt and clay shards. He was slightly jealous that he treated a rat with better tact than most humans did with him. He sighed while plucking the pieces of pottery from the dirt he then grabbed an old boot that was lying around, and funneled the shards into the boot first. He hummed while scooping up the dirt and letting it fall into the shoe. He then lastly moved to the the homeless plant. He used his fingers to carve out a small hole. Lifting the plant, he carefully guided the roots into their new home. Then softly patted the soil around it and gave it a sprinkle of water.
His smile brightened as he stood and observed the plant, “it’s avant-garde!,” he softly chuckled and placed it back on the shelf. He allowed Bruno jr. to scurry down is arm to check out the little diy project. He lowered himself down to meet his rodent eye level. “See, sometimes accidents can lead to better things,” he whispered with a smile.
Bruno stood up with a big stretch and let out a yawn. He then looked around his room, taking in the light that shown through his magical abode’s open ceiling. ‘It’s probably time to head downstairs anyways,’ he thought to himself while making his way over to the dark wooden wardrobe. He begrudgingly stepped out of his comfy pajamas and replaced them with his usual day time attire. He stopped himself before exiting the room, remembering the small vile on his bedside table. He shuffled back over the bed while wringing his hands. He gave the bottle a small smile before picking it up and unscrewing the top. Though he had always been a nervous child, after he was given his gift and grew out of the ‘you can’t yell at a small child’ phase, he had begun getting a lot of backlash from the community. The villagers had started blaming him for what he saw in his visions, not to mention the town started
spreading rumors and telling horrible stories about him. This had been incredibly harmful for the young teenager, and his anxiety began spiraling out of control. He closed his eyes an the calming and familiar sent of lavender and mint filled his nose. His sweet sister Julieta had crafted him an herbal tincture to help with his anxiety, he wasn’t sure if it really did anything, but the gesture meant a lot to him. He took a few drops of the mixture and took a sip of water from the cup on his nightstand. He hopped up and walked over to to a hole in the stone wall, a secret slide to help him quickly reach the bottom of his tower. He sat down on the edge, crossed his fingers, held his breath, then let himself slide down.

Bruno stepped into the warm glow of the kitchen, the heat from the stove warming his chronically cold skin. This was his favorite time of the day, getting toasty and warm after spending the night in his rather drafty cave-like room. “Buenos dĂas, hermano!” Julieta beamed warmly at him while placing breakfast on the table. Bruno smiled while making his way to the counter. “y tĂș, hermana,” he gently responded while helping her place the last of the dishes on the table. After finishing up with setting the table, Julieta rang a bell alerting her mama and sister that breakfast was done. The two siblings sat down together, both enjoying the silence and taking in the golden sun rays dancing through the kitchen. Bruno was in total bliss as he and his older sister sipped their cups of cafĂ© con leche. Julieta also savored the quiet of the morning, that’s why they got along so well. “Has the medicine been helping?” Julieta asked quietly as not to startle her brother. “U-uh yeah, I think it has been,” he smiled as her face lit up, not having the heart to tell her that nothing really helped. They went back to soaking up the warmth when his mama and Pepa came thundering in
rather literally. Pepa had a rain cloud hovering above her, it’s drizzle getting on Bruno’s rauna. He zoned out into his plate, trying not to listen to Pepa and his mama’s argument. It was all just noise to him, his vision slightly blurring around the edges. He began subconsciously picking at the hem of his now damp poncho.
He quickly looked up, hearing Julieta carefully raise her voice to change the topic. “So, what jobs do we have planned for today?” She asked while giving her mom a smile. “Ah well..” her mood changed, Pepa shot her a thankful look, “my sweet Julieta, you’re needed down at the clinic today. They’re overcrowded from a mining accident. They will greatly appreciate your help.” She changed her focus back to Pepa “and as you know, the farmers need your help today, I know you had plans, but the crops desperately need watering,” she shot her a small frown. “And Bruno, um.. there have been no requests for visions today. Go into town and try to assist the villagers with their tasks.” “Yes mama,” he smiled internally he was relieved, he would have an easier day. With that, he finished his coffee, and grabbed an arepa. He stood and went to excuse himself. “You’re not going to finish breakfast mijo?” His mama asked in an a confused tone. “Ahh.. I just want to get an early start!” He said while backing out of the kitchen. She nodded “very well, see you later Brunito, make me proud,” she smiled and continued eating.
He let out a sigh of relief walking into the common area. Bruno jr. scampered over to him, jumping onto his poncho and crawling up to his shoulder. He smiled and broke off a piece of the arepa and handed it to his little friend. “It’s going to be a good day,” he smiled and knocked on the door of Casita before exiting into the sunshine.

He pulled up his hood as he walked into town, he knew today would basically be a free day because most of the towns people did not want his help. They tended to think that he brought bad luck, so if someone needed help, they would just wait and ask one of his sisters. He finally arrived in the plaza, and took a seat on the edge of the fountain. He was basking in the sun, still enjoying the rays as they warmed up his rauna. He was going to enjoy every second of this accounting on the fact that his sister would be making it rain today. He let his mind wander for a while, letting his hand touch the refreshing coolness of the fountain. He scooted around, so he could face the water. His eyes went wide, as he stifled a scream. As he looked into the water the reflection was
it wasn’t his own. It was of a gruesome old woman shooting him an evil looking smirk. He gulped as she pointed. His eyes darted around, looking towards the town bulletin board. He quickly looked back down, and the old woman had disappeared, just a panicking Bruno looking back at him. “Dios mío
” he rubbed his eyes, ‘did
 did I imagine that
?’ He asked himself before looking back to the board. He stood pulling his hood further down over his face. He anxiously shuffled over to the direction that the apparition was trying to lead him. He carefully looked over the notes on the board. The usual important days, weather calendar ads
then something out of place struck his eye. He ripped the purple flyer off the wall. The paper had an illustration of two hands holding an eye, ‘specialized in making your deepest desires a reality
” he read to himself. He was terrified but full of curiosity, ‘what could this be
’ he turned the paper over revealing directions. He studied them carefully realizing that this would lead him outside of the Encanto. ‘Am I really going to follow this
?’ he couldn’t believe himself even entertaining the idea, but something was drawing him to follow the directions. He mentally prepared himself then began his journey towards the outskirts of town.

.

He crossed a small river leading him to a part of the mountain covered in vines. He looked around nervously making sure no one followed him. He then carefully parted the vines in front of him, revealing a small cave, he gulped, then held his breath as he stepped in. He squinted as his eyes adjusted to the light. He could see the light at the end of the tunnel, which gave him some relief. He cautiously made his way the the opening, his eyes having to readjust to the light again. He ran his hand through his hair before looking back it the directions. ‘East from the cave
’ he nodded to himself as he headed in that direction. After a decent trek, he began noticing glass bottles hanging from trees along the path. The further he got the more and more anxious he became, and the urge to turn around got stronger. Then up ahead he noticed a small shack. He paused and began picking at his rauna again. Something inside of him urged him to keep walking, and before he even noticed, he was much closer to the building. He observed the white outline surrounding the shack along with large, colorful gemstones. Bruno had finally arrived at the door. It was crudely engraved with a sun and a mood surrounded with herbs. “That’s it, this is crazy, Im going h-
” he was cut off by the door slowly creeping open. The sky became dark, and a drizzle began. “Great timing Pepa
” he muttered under his breath. The rain instantly became a downpour, which made him run inside. Realization hit as soon as he closed the door behind him. He gulped and began looking around, nervous of what he would discover. ‘OhmygodburnowhatthehellareyoudoingyourgonnadiehereandNoonewillknowwhereyouareand
’ his thoughts were interrupted again he heard a bubbling sound. Glowing purple smoke began rising out of a cauldron in the middle of the room. He could see circles with symbols drawn on the floor, big canisters full of god knows what on shelves all around, and. He screamed, the old woman appeared behind the cauldron engulfed in purple fog cackling, her wrinkles enhanced from the lighting underneath her. “Bruno
what do you de-..” a clap of thunder boomed around them, white light flashing through the windows. Bruno screamed again, but there was another surprising shriek which drew his attention back to the old woman
wait what. His eyebrows lowered in confusion. The old woman was replaced with a not very intimidating girl around his age. She wasn’t much taller than him, had white and black curly hair that was halfway up. She had gold jewelry on her ears and face, and big round glasses. They looked at each other awkwardly for a moment. “Uhhh
” the girl began “the uh..the um.. the glamour doesn’t work if uh
 I’m not focusing on it
” she gulped. They continued their awkward staring. “Um. T-this is weird
 I should head out
” he turned to leave. “Nonono!” She ran and grabbed him by the shoulders. Still not sure what to say.
