Updates

Hey guys ! I just wanted to offer some updates on things happening soon and plans I'm working on.

This weekend, I'll be hosting a vocaloid concert at Yama Con 2023 in Pigeon Forge, TN under the title Voca Live Party. It'll feature the crypton vocaloids as well as Gumi, Gackpo and Piko. Sorry it's such short notice, but if you're going to the convention or are in the area, consider stopping by on friday from 8:30pm - 10:00pm ! I'll probably try to post some clips on here afterwards. I'm excited for it, because I got a new screen that i'm hoping will really improve visibility.

At the above mentioned convention, i'll be running a booth to advertise the concert, where all sales go towards future concert endeavors. (equipment, maybe motion capture commissions if i'm lucky) This includes four charms I reblogged earlier, which will be for sale online in limited quantity sometime late january.

After the convention, i'll be uploading a hologram ready version of the concert as well! I don't know if i'm going to premier it or just drop it suddenly, but we will see.

The Piko models were suppose to come out in time for his anniversary, they probably won't be able to be released until later December. I've only finished prepping half of them, and I'd like to post a video with the distribution.

I'm currently in the process of doing a smaller concert for ABC Winterfest Remix in Southaven, MS on January 13th. Details are still being worked out.

The Piko Live Party encore is still in development. It will feature the two songs left out of PLP2, as well as a few others if time permits. My goal was to release it on the anniversary of PLP1, which was March 13th, 2021. However since that's the middle of the week, i'll probably aim for the weekend before or after.

Your Diva - Design, Effects, and Extra Notes.

Design

This one was truly a collaborative effort. Modeled by Maydayfireball, but designed by jjinomu, maydayfireball, and Zen. (Yes, I did the croptop part, sue me.)

This design is suppose to encompass both the feeling of summer, as well as still heavily pointing back to Piko's roots / default. In a sense, it's both his "future" and his "past". He has exactly 12 wings - 6 on his back and three on each shoe. Unlike last year's finale piko, who had 10 wings because he was 10 years old. As of this concert airing, Piko is 12 years old.

Effects

The effects I used for this one were relatively simple. The pictures were physical objects, while the video parts in the first chorus were just MMD's screen capture AVI system.

I went mostly minimalist, because it's the final song and it's suppose to feel simplistic.

Takoyaki Donuts recorded Piko's box for me and managed to get it exactly how I was envisioning. I added a few filters / color changes over it to make it feel like a memory. Like looking back on the first moment you got Piko.

Zen recorded the V2 editor section for me. I literally went "Hey can you open up any ol project you have in V2 and record like 12 seconds of you fucking around on it." and he went out of his way to actually use a VSQ of "Your Diva" and is editing the section of the song that he's currently singing LSDKFJLSDF KEEP IN MIND ZEN DID NOT TUNE THIS COVER. HE JUST WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND. (Also i think this cover is actually tuned in vocaloid 5?? So this is fake news Zen.)

Extra Notes

This is a Piko who's learned to look at the past fondly, and hopefully step into the future. In a sense he's reminiscing with all of you, and thank you for your support all this time.

「I have something I want to tell you - 」 「Thank you for choosing me.」 「I won't ever forget the joy of meeting you on that day.」

It was important to me to specifically highly art of the first Piko Live Party, as oppose to art of Piko in general. Mostly because this concert would never have happened without the people who supported the first concert.

「I'm not satisfied yet」 「and I won't be, until I've sung all of your songs...」

Admittedly, it was a bit cheeky of me to put the fanart during THOSE lyrics. The actual intention for those lines is to say "Please use me to sing the songs you want to write," but with the concert being made of covers it's almost like he's speaking to other vocaloids. Like "I'm not gonna be satisfied until I've covered and stolen ALL the songs you had written for you. >:)"

But just like before, its your support and hard work that gave him his wings. Because he's your one and only diva <3 He slowly transitions back into Default piko at the very end, coming full circle.

I'm SO grateful that Pablo Bablo was able to step in and cover this song at the last minute. Our original finale song didn't work out, and he pulled out this absolutely amazing cover at lightning speeds in the matter of like? A week I think? Insane. I think things ended up working out well in the end.

Night Sky Patrol of Tomorrow - Design, Effects, and Extra Notes.

Design

Designed and Modeled by Maydayfireball, with some touch ups from jjinomu ! I distinctly remember sending him to her and going "yeah i dunno what to do for his shoes" and her sending him back with "no shoes." so free feet pics i guess.

ANYWAY.. Some people caught it, but he was loosely inspired by the vocaloids in the "Empty" sekai of project sekai. He's intentionally fairly monochrome, so that the wings towards the end seem even more vivid. He's meant to appear a bit hopeless and messy, like he's really down on his luck. I imagine a Piko like this would be gentle, but a little sad most of the time.

Effects

There's two Big effect points for this one, so I'll go into both.

The first is the night sky. It has an intentionally painted, flat look. It's suppose to feel like the backdrop of a stage, not like a real night sky. Like he's performing, but his heart isn't in it quite yet. I added a light dust particle effect in as well to make a contrast between it and the still background to really hammer in it's falseness.

And then of course, the climax.

Using a flat black plane behind him, i abused mmd's transparency bug to display the artwork behind him through the wings.

The wings are also directly shaped from the wings shown in the MV.

This moment wasn't just a climax for this song, but a climax for the concert as a whole. Like Piko gaining hope and a better outlook for the future thanks to those who reached out to him honestly.

Extra Notes

BOY. I apologize in advance, i have SO MANY THOUGHTS about these lyrics. If you're an english speaker, I highly recommend watching it with the closed captions on. They're a bit on the nose, even without me digging into them.

「I'm a boy who picks his battles depending on whatever suits his mood」 「No hopes for the future, I wanted to be drawn in a dream.」 「and yet I fear the future- hating tomorrow, wishing for the past.」

These are the opening lines for the song. Coming off the back of our angry streaming heart piko who longed for the past, this version of him has given up. Like there is nothing left for him to do.

「Leaving the old me behind,」 「but that night was different from all the others.」 「You took my hand...」

I like to believe, in a way, Piko would be referring to the first Piko Live Party here. Like a moment of light in a dark future, You reached out your hand and supported him.

「If this is to end as a dream, at least allow me to change yesterday...」 「I won't say anything like that, so let me keep smiling together with you, tomorrow as well.」

I've said it before, but we made the first Piko Live Party assuming it wouldn't get attention. We worked hard, but with the expectation that it wouldn't be seen by many. That's why, during this chorus, the backdrop is flat. Like a kid's play. Or, like not-quite-discovered potential.

「Even if I think that the world truly changed,」 「and even if I tried to hope or change, the future was cruel.」

The screen goes darker, and the colors become fully monochrome. It's a bit like a reality check - We're supporting Piko, but aside from us, there's not much he can do to change his fate as a discontinued vocaloid.

「Even so, the world I always watched with you was truly beautiful.」 「I still haven't forgotten that, I've placed it in my heart so I can remember.」

This is a Piko who's speaking to us from the present. I interoperate it as if he's referring to the rush of support he got, and how he'll always cherish it even if his future is bleak.

Of course, this is followed by what feelings and emotions you've given him. The colors burst forward, creating wings like the summer sky. They're a physical representation of your support and the future it's given him.

「I want to be together with you in the future, however short our time may be」 「so I'll shout "Remember this day someday in the future, whoever we are then..."」

Again, I highly recommend watching this song in particular with the closed captions turned on. It really adds to it.

I was extremely happy when Mio picked this song to cover, because I knew immediately what direction I should take this concert in at that point. I knew what I wanted to do with it from the very beginning, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Streaming Heart - Design, Effects, and Extra Notes.

Design

Modeled and Designed by Maydayfireball. Naturally, he's based off of the project diva module. And I'm only JUST realizing I forgot to bandage up his hand. Anyway, I wanted to go past just the bandages that implicate a physical flesh wound, and go more lean into a digital / mechanical damage look as well. The heart on his head glitching, the wire wrapped around his arm, and the frayed USB tail were part of that. Originally, his tail was suppose to spark, but I couldn't figure out a way to do it without it being weird or too distracting.

Effects

There's a lot to go into, so I'm going to try to pick out things I really liked. One being - Did you notice the heart in the background slowly grows as it's caged up?

I wanted it to feel like it was just getting bigger and bigger, until it finally explodes into pixels at the end.

And here's what the whole stage looks like zoomed out, for the hell of it LSDKFJSDLF

THIS.. is actually the same mirror I used in Strangers. But now it's cracked and broken, laying on it's side. The street sign is also a reference to the original Strangers MV. I'll go more into the "why" of this in the Extra notes section.

Similarly, this is the same frame from Cat Rubbing, but covered in the same rust effect.

Extra Notes

So, my intention with this one had less to do with the lyrics and actual meaning of the song, and more to do with it's overall vibes. This is the third to last song, and I wanted it to feel angry. Like a Piko who's tired of being ignored and left at the bottom of the shelf. I referenced Strangers (from plp1) and Cat rubbing (the second song in the set) as a tongue and cheek way of saying "Hey, remember this? Wouldn't you like to go back to that? You can't."

Obviously, you CAN go back. Those songs, covers, and videos all still exist. But we're at a point of Piko's life where he's steadily becoming less relevant. He's fighting to keep your attention. It's almost like he's viewing that as a broken relationship, and he's angry it's gotten to this point. I feel like I'm rambling.

Anyway, I chose strangers to reference from plp 1 specifically because Roseus did this cover and that one. Also, This piko design was made to intentionally look like Strangers Piko. The jacket and half skirt are nods to him.

(Oh, you can really see how my style has improved between these last two years, huh.. that's kinda weird feeling..)

Kimagure Mercy - Design, Effects, and Extra Notes

Design

This was our Racing Queen design contest winner, Designed by LittleVIC ! I did have to adjust the design slightly around the waist / hip area so youtube wouldn't get mad. But if you decide to draw one of them, please credit Vic for it !

The racing piko design winner was always planned to go with kimagure mercy, but I'm glad Vic's ended up fitting it so well !

Effects

The majority of the effects were done by Kreifish, but I'll talk about the ones that I did!

The silhouettes at the beginning were my work. This is a view of them from a downward angle. They're a flat plane with a changing texture ! The original intention was to have the colors based off whatever the design's main colors were. Since Vic's were rainbow colored, I ended up playing into that. (Krei made them glow a lot more in the final cut.)

The ringing sound effect is a 3D opject that shakes with an expression. It was hard to resist not making SOMETHING for that part, since it was such an obvious sound effect and hand movement.

The pinup board to display screen effect was also my brain child. I achieved it by creating one pmx that had all the art placed around him so it would mostly fill up the screen. I saved that pmx, and used it to make a new x file. If you make the texture "screen.bmp" on a flat plane as an x file, it'll become a screen for mmd's screen capture mode ! pretty neat, yeah?

Anyway, These were suppose to sort of tie in with the silhouettes. Sassy poses popping in + sassy pictures popping in. Even though it's a song about someone playing with the singer's heart, I sorta wanted this vibe of like.. "we've broken up, but look at how hot I am. You're missing out, idiot."

And finally, the smoke at the end is just to transition through sound cues. The heart really IS behind him, but ironically they're never on screen at the same time slkdjfsdlf

Extra Notes

Like I said during the live, This was a song I wanted to include in the first concert. I went with sweet devil mostly because the only motion for kimagure mercy at the time was the moka one for 5 characters.

PoPiPo - Design, Effects, and extra notes.

Modeled by Maydayfireball and Designed by Maydayfireball and jjinomu ! I sent my design idea to her, and she touched him up and changed some of the details to give you what we ended up with ! His overall vibe is a street pop look.

Effects

This shit is a MESS.

But it's easiest to say that all the art are flat planes that come in and out of frame. The portraits were drawn by xzenvii, while the piko render / the fruit gang were drawn / rendered by maydayfireball.

The characters were chosen based off a survey I ran on twitter, asking people who they associated with Piko the most ! Miki won by a landslide, followed by flower and VY2. Len and Fukase tied for fourth, but since I only needed four characters I then ran a poll which Len won. Here is the total tally for anyone curious !

Also I definitely typed "Miki = cherry" in my notes, but i checked the sai file and that's DEFINITELY an apple so i don't know what that's all about. Anyway.

Extra Notes

It felt important that whatever followed Apple Fireworks and Sea of Soda would be much more cheerful. I wanted to break the tension, since we were still only mid-concert. I kept him a teal silhouette for so long in the beginning so there would be a chance to process the sudden mood shift. And, ya know, it ties in with the ending too. so it works. I also try to view these songs in the perspective of "what if this was originally written for Piko", which is why some of them (and this one especially) heavily reference the original MVs. But reworked so now Piko is the main character lol
