Horse
While out riding, Whumpee falls and is too badly injured to get back on their horse. They have to decide whether to let the horse go and hope it runs back to the stable, leading to a search party coming out, or keep it here and keep trying or at least huddle against it for warmth.

Safety
Caretaker and Whumpee have finally finished a long journey across country, Caretaker ensuring the whole way that Whumpee is safe and has enough to eat and stays warm and the injuries they pick up are treated.
When they reach safety, Caretaker immediately rushes to huddle by the fire (or other heat source) and only then does Whumpee realise how cold and wet and exhausted their companion is.

Gag
The team is hiding, but Whumpee is injured and can't stop moaning in pain. Team Leader hushes them, but they shake their head.
"I'm trying," they whisper. "I can't… can't help it."
"Gag them," Team Leader whispers to Caretaker.
Caretaker's eyes go wide. "What? But -"
Team Leader snatches a handkerchief from their pocket and comes over to shove it into Whumpee's mouth, muffling their cry. "If they spit it out, I'm leaving you both behind," they say and turn away.

Question
"Where's Whumpee?" demands Team Leader. "You took them away yesterday. Where are they?"
Whumper smiles sadly. "They were stronger than I could ever have expected, Team Leader. You should be proud."
Team Leader stares at them. "That… that doesn't answer my question."

Hiding
During an attack, the team tries to whisk Caretaker and Whumpee to safety, but they lose track of Whumpee in the chaos. Once they're safe, despite their own injuries, Caretaker won't stop asking where Whumpee is and if they're safe.

Offer
"It's a letter from Whumper," says Team Leader, tearing open the envelope. "They've finally sent demands."
As they read, they go pale.
"What does it say?" asks Whumpee. "I mean, there's not much we can do but agree and buy time, but…"
""Leave the Macguffin at [Location] at dawn tomorrow and I'll give you a one-year truce.""
Whumpee gasps. "We can't give up the Macguffin!"
"They also say… "If you're not willing to give up the Macguffin, that's fine. Leave Whumpee instead and I'll return them when I see fit, provided you do nothing to breach the truce.""

Loss
Whumpee 1 looks up as the door of their cell opens. Whumper enters, dragging another person who is also bound and gagged. They push the second prisoner to their knees and grab them by the hair to make them face W1, who gasps in horror as they recognise Whumpee 2.
"Recognise them?" asks Whumper.
W1 nods.
"Good." Whumper draws a weapon. "I want to make sure you know there's no point trying to escape because you have nobody to return to."

Three deconditioning dialogue things
"You know you're allowed to sit down, right?"
"What- No, no, I just wanted the tape to patch this thing until I can mend it properly. Please stop crying…"
"No, that's not your name. Your name's Whumpee. Remember?"

Water
Rescuer sighs as they look at the untouched glass of water in front of Whumpee. "You must be thirsty - why not drink that?"
Whumpee glares at them. "What is it?" they ask hoarsely.
"Water."
"Uh-huh. And what's in it?"
"Hydrogen and oxygen."

Speak
Days after Whumper released them, Whumpee still hasn't spoken. They're hungry, scarred, and skittish, but Caretaker can see they should be able to speak. Still, even when they're asked a direct question they stay silent.
Suddenly, Caretaker has an idea. "You have permission to speak, Whumpee. Forever."
Whumpee gasps and tears come to their eyes. "Finally," they whisper.

Knowledge
As Rescuer and Caretaker are rushing away from Whumper's headquarters with Whumpee, they're already discussing the fact that Whumper was a lot more powerful than they thought and trying to figure out how that happened.
"They've allied with [group]," says Whumpee weakly. "They're getting supplies and recruits from them."
"How do you know?" asks Caretaker, startled.
Whumpee smiles faintly. "I paid attention to who my guards were and what they were feeding me."

Betrayal

Calm
Rescuer is horrified as they look at Whumpee's injuries and the restraints holding them.
"I'm so sorry," they stammer. "I'd have been here sooner, I didn't know where you were, what are we -"
"Rescuer!" Whumpee's voice is weak, but cuts through Rescuer's panic. "Look at me. Look me in the eye."
Rescuer swallows hard and obeys.
"I know this is scary, but you need to calm down," says Whumpee steadily. "One step at a time, OK? Now - do you have anything you can get into the keyholes on these manacles?"

Hostage
Rescuer bursts into Whumper's headquarters and stumbles to a halt as they see Whumper standing at the other end of the room, Whumpee kneeling at their feet with their hands clasped behind their head and their mouth taped. Whumper has a gun to their head.
"Weapon on the ground, Rescuer," says Whumper.
Rescuer winces, but drops their gun.
"Kick it towards me."
Again, Rescuer obeys, kicking the gun hard enough that it slides across the ground and comes to rest next to Whumpee.
"You won't get away with this, you know," says Rescuer.
Whumper laughs. "Cliches at a time like this? Got any more?"
Rescuer keeps talking, keeping Whumper's attention on them as, slowly, Whumpee lowers a hand and reaches for the gun lying beside them.

Pretend
Most of the time Whumper actually treats Whumpee well. They're a prisoner, but they're kept in good conditions with a warm bed, clean clothes, and plenty to eat and drink.
However, Whumper has a reputation to uphold, so if anyone - ally or enemy - is going to see Whumpee they have to fake being mistreated.

Mistake
Whumpee has been working undercover, trying to win Whumper's trust. They think they're doing well - Whumper is friendly, they've hung out several times, and then Whumper invites them to dinner. Why would they invite them in if they were suspicious?
When Whumpee arrives, Whumper locks the door behind them and their friendly smile vanishes.
"I know what you're doing here," they say. "You and those who sent you are going to regret spying on me."
