what do u think abt the dynamic of the vees? they’re truly a fucked up lil family hehe and i wonder how they work in relation to one another ! also specifically val and vox ! i think it’s interesting how there’s some respect between them considering their different strengths lol ( porn and tech/news)
TY FOR ASKING bc i looove the vees so bad.
vox + valentino: most obvious, they're that messy on/off couple with severe issues that nonetheless do genuinely care about each other at the end of the day. val breaks his phone, vox screams in his face, they giggle and dance together, they have the range. they might rile each other up and throw each other under the bus for petty reasons, but in a life or death situation, they protect each other without hesitation. power vacillates between them like a seesaw. manipulative, toxic beyond belief, unexpectedly wholesome - they're made for each other.
valentino + velvette: i just know these bitches live for the drama. they keep each other updated on the latest gossip, they make fun of vox together, they're that awful best friend duo from high school who look at you like you're a bug under their shoes and then they skip class to go vape in the bathroom. val is very fond of her and she likes the attention, but she also gets easily annoyed with his lack of impulse control and inability to play a long con like her & vox. i think she's also one of the few people in existence that val won't sexualize (both bc she'd kill him and bc he sees her as a real person, not a toy).
velvette + vox: these two are the real power houses of the vees. i think vox was a mentor figure of sorts at the beginning, impressed by her ambition and drive, who gave her the tools to succeed and then stood back and watched as she clawed her way rightfully to the top. he respects her and her take-no-shit attitude. she loves him as much as she sees right through his bullshit, and even though she knows he needs her for his empire to function, she acknowledges that she needs his support too. they're both strong leaders and rule their employees with an iron fist. vel doesn't hesitate to call him for backup and both her and val trust vox to take care of them.
vox + val + vel: most importantly, all of the vees see each other as equals. they're all self-obsessed tyrants who view everyone around them as lessers EXCEPT FOR one another. at any given moment, all of them are thinking "i can't believe i'm the only sane one here." vel rolls her eyes and buries her face in her phone while voxval make out with each other over dinner, vox/vel stop val from doing something crazy and impulsive again, vel/val physically drag vox away from his desk to make him take a break from his work.
you disrespect one of the vees, you disrespect all of them. they're fiercely protective of each other and they still let vox humiliate himself on live television for shits and giggles. they're terrible. they love each other. they're a family in every sense of the word, dysfunction and all. they enable each other's worst tendencies while also keeping each other in check. they are everything they are the moment

More on Otto as a tries but fails girl!dad and the non verbal communication with the greens. Just how he shows care for his daughter, even though he dooms her. He loves her, wants what's best for her, the family the realm but in doing so he has essentially signed off her execution.
When he tells her to once again visit the king and reprimands her for her self harm he holds her hands
Tumblr media
One could argue that this is simply a manipulation tactic and while i don't completely disagree I have other evidence I'd like to present.
Tumblr media
Look at how they're holding each other like this is a final goodbye. Neither knows when they'll see each other again. I know he (rightfully) warns her about Rhaenyra he cradles her face. Like it's something precious 🥺 (it is)
Tumblr media
Who is this look of devastion for? The imaginary audience? He was not only fired but ripped away from his only daughter. Realizing the mess he's put her in. How she is now truly alone.
Tumblr media
We know Criston was her sworn sword and one of the few people she trusted. It makes sense he stand behind her. He's got her back, but look Ottos there too.
Tumblr media
In this episode when she was worried about her brother she looked at dad for reassurance and he provided it. Knowing just how concerned she must have been.
Whether or not he's being a manipulative bastard when he does this stuff before he steers her in his own direction, using this to keep her tethered to him, it's quite clear that he understands how important these moments are for his daughter. Can you genuinely look me in the eye and say that Tywin would do this with Cersei? Hold her like she's the most precious thing in the world to him? Nope he'd just command her to do stuff and as her father it is seen as his right to do so.
Tumblr media
This family is so dysfunctional. You can love your child and wants what's best for them from the bottom of your heart, with all that you have but still mess up. In the modern day he'd probably be pushing her to a stable career like doctor or lawyer or whatever because he wants her future to be secure without realizing that it's not necessarily what she wants and being blind to how truly miserable she feels.
Sidenote: Wasn't Helaena his favorite grandchild, someone who was not a boy thus a potential heir? Otto is a girl! grandpa too. (If I'm not mistaken 😂)
When it comes to the girl! dad wars he wins because he taught his daughter accountability and how to not get screwed over in a bad trade deal, like idk give someone what is rightfully yours in exchange for being a consort to a king wiyh questionable lineage (Sorry couldn't help but shade the Viserys and Daemon)
OTTO DRIVES ME INSANE HE IS SUCH A DAD BUT HE IS SUCH A MAN TOO!!!!! WHY ARE FATHERS OF DAUGHTERS ALLOWED TO BE MEN???????
HE IS A GIRL GRANDPA TOO OH MY STARS 😭 They should show him with Jaehaera next, so he could add girl-great-grandpa to the allegations 😭
I also wish they had scenes together with Gwayne! In the books Alicent has multiple unnamed brothers, but Gwayne would have been enough, like can you IMAGINE the dynamics with him thrown into the mix??? Him with his DAD and his SISTER and his SISTER'S BOYFRIEND Ser Criston???? He got so shafted like he is the only person in this effed up family not to have a psychosexual obsession with Alicent?? Unfair!
I imagine they wanted to highlight Alicent's isolation as a source of her growing paranoia, but could you imagine??? Her having at least one more person is her small circle?? Standing up to their dad for her??? Holding her hand through her pregnancies??? Throwing shade at Rhaenyra together?? Bonding with Ser Criston over how much they want to commit regicide??
I'm not sure he stayed in King's Landing for all this period, but he could have at least visited once in a while? What we know is that he is named second-in-command of the Gold Cloaks at the start of the way. ALSO OTTO INTERACTING WITH A MALE RELATIVE OF HIS OWN GET THAT IS NOT A COMPLETE FUCK-UP??

Top 10 BEST Movies of 2023
Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all partied hard and are now surviving a dreadful hangover by sitting with your family or friends and enjoying a well deserved marathon of Lord of the Rings. 2023 - what a year! In the movie biz alone there were those little minor events known as the strikes of the actors and writers. Just when we thought COVID was over and stopped affecting releases, these strikes were like “errr no, actually..!”. To be fair, the way the streaming services were underpaying their actors and the studios enforcing AI so much into the media, it was good that these artists stood up for themselves and showed it to the man so to speak! Anyway, we’re not here to talk Hollywood politics, but to celebrate all the quality filmmaking that was exhibited this past year. I’d say in all honesty this year felt weaker compared to 2022. To be fair last year gave us Everything Everywhere All at Once, Top Gun: Maverick and of course the legendary RRR, so the bar was high for 2023. That being said, I still enjoyed some solid films, so let’s rank my Top 10 favourite movies of 2023, but first some honourable mentions…
HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
Evil Dead Rise - one heck of a gore fest, and the best opening title card of the year hands down!
Past Lives - a simple yet brutally honest love story.
The Boy and the Heron - Wanna hear Robert Pattinson sound like not Robert Pattinson?!
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar - Wes Anderson and Roald Dahl are a match made in heaven.
Barbie - I’m Just Ken…need I say more??
Wonka - Timmy makes for a good Willy.
Right, with that, let’s get into the actual fun stuff - The Top 10 Best Movies of 2023!…
10) GUY RITCHIE’S THE COVENANT - The least Guy Ritchie film Guy Ritchie has ever directed and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Away with the rough East End and grizzly jokes, and instead what we have is a very reserved and straight-faced war thriller. Honestly I was so surprised with how much I was engaged and invested in The Covenant - it is a thrilling pulse-racing story of survival that adds to the dread that elements of it are true to many people’s reality. Truly, this is a well-made movie!
Tumblr media
9) TETRIS - You hear of a movie titled Tetris and one has to wonder if we have another Emoji Movie on our hands, where we get little tetra shaped characters goofing about in some animated mathematics world trying to force an unfunny joke upon our poor heads. Luckily that’s not the case, as instead this is a behind-the-scenes look at the legal drama behind the ownership of the game rights, and though that may not sound that fun, the movie is surprisingly very entertaining with some visual pixel tricks, a great soundtrack, delightful nostalgia, a fast-paced ante-upping narrative set in the backdrop of the Soviet Union and an adorable Taron Egerton in the middle of it all. Honestly, I’m shocked at how much I digged the Tetris movie!
Tumblr media
8) GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 - Marvel is evidently in a rut, but a rare bright spark in recent memory was the final instalment of James Gunn’s take on the fun dysfunctional space family. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a wonderful ride, bringing lots of great humour, character dynamics and emotion, and gets you hooked on a feeling…one last time. Oh, and Gunn finally managed to properly show Nathan Fillion’s face in a Marvel movie, and that in itself is a win!
Tumblr media
7) MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING - PART ONE - Tom Cruise - what a guy! I mean yes he’s a Scientologist, has a constant death wish by breaking his ankles on film sets and also guilty of jumping on Oprah’s sofa like a monkey, but my my is he a charmer! You guys know the drill with these Mission Impossible movies - Tom Cruise throws his body around like a potato fearing not for his life nor broken limbs, but you have to respect the man for wanting to give the audience their tickets’ worth of entertainment, and Dead Reckoning not disappoint! There’s never a dull moment, the action is constantly inventive and exciting, and honestly with how consistent the quality of these films are, I say keep ‘em coming, Cruise-man!
Tumblr media
6) DREAM SCENARIO - Anyone who knows me knows how much I love me some Nicolas Cage! The guy’s an acting legend, and he’s had it rough a decade ago when he got stuck paying off hi tax money and starring in crappy B-movies, but recently he’s been on a hot streak of great original content, and Dream Scenario adds to that. I love this idea of a random dude suddenly appearing in people’s dreams for absolutely no reason. It’s so rare to have a new original conception in a film in our day and age, and the execution here is great. As a bonus, the movie features possibly the best fart joke in the history of the cinema.
Tumblr media
5) OPPENHEIMER - On one had this is probably the most “well-made” movie of 2023 cinematically speaking. Christopher Nolan does not hold back in using his typical non-linear way of storytelling, with the film weaving narratives and different time periods seamlessly as it explores the profound depths of a man who’s actions altered the world’s trajectory forever, for better or worse. It’s an incredible historical piece of cinema, and the movie gets extra points for the whole ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, but the reason this film is not higher on the list is due to the fact that I believe it is overrated. Cause every single person raved about how bloody amazing this thing was, I became tired of the positivity. Yeah, I know, I’m being a Scrooge but what you gonna do about it?? Oppenheimer is stuck at No. 5!
Tumblr media
4) KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON - When a movie forces you to stay in the cinema for over 3 hours, it better be one epic film, as your man here was straining his bladder to health threatening levels. However this is a Martin Scorsese picture, as such this is event cinema! And this one may be up there with one of his best. Killers of the Flower Moon is a major saga of greed, murder, corruption and despair, told through the eyes of a filmmaker who somehow is still managing to mature more as a director even though he’s already over 80 years of age.
Tumblr media
3) THE HOLDOVERS - The Holdovers is very much a vibes movie. It has that old-timey retro feel to it from how it is shot to make it look like it’s from the 70s (reminiscent of John Hughes films and Dead Poets Society). You also have the constant snow falling and the Christmas music just really delivers that cozy winter feel. It’s a wholesome Christmas movie through and through. Paul Giamatti gives a career-best performance and the writing is absolutely stellar, as such The Holdovers is destined to become a holiday classic.
Tumblr media
2) BEAU IS AFRAID - A. 3-hour long anxiety attack that A24 spent $30 million to produce. For a movie studio to spill out such a massive amount of cash on a completely original IP that is divisively out-there and wild is such a unique thing to happen in Hollywood in this day and age, that like the film or not this act needs to be applauded. It just so happens that Beau Is Afraid is batshit bonkers and truly an act of madness, yet one that I will forever cherish. I bet David Lynch had the biggest hard-on when he watched this movie - you betcha!
Tumblr media
1) SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is, put simply, brilliant! It’s everything that made Into the Spider-Verse great dialled up to 1000%, and the result is honestly fantastic. Look, I watch a lot of movies. And yeah, movies are great and I love them deeply. But in watching so many films I have in a way lost that magic of being in awe every time I go to the cinema. Cliches and repetitiveness in films stick out like sore thumbs. However with Across the Spider-Verse I felt like a kid again, purely stunned in amazement at every single frame, engaged with the characters and story-line, not knowing where it will go next. Like I cannot reiterate how much fun I had watching this movie! The animation is phenomenal, the narrative so rich, a pulse-throbbing music score (I even have Pemberton’s score on vinyl now just cause I love it so much!) superb character development and so many fun and unexpected twists and turns. Across the Spider-Verse is THE movie of 2023 for me and I believe this is the first time ever an animation took a top spot on my list. Here’s hoping Part 3 of the Spider-Verse saga will play out like The Return of the King!
Tumblr media
There you have it - my favourite films of 2023. Naturally I don’t expect my list to be the same as yours, so don’t go throwing a tantrum if I missed out a movie you loved. Or do throw a tantrum, see if I care. But also don’t, cause like we’re all friends here, right? Right??!

John in the Star Club Tapes: No Mr. Lewisohn, he is not charming
It is so stressful to listen to the December 28th Star Club tapes. And for anyone who has endured a relationship with an out-of-control person, who has tried to minimize the damage in public, terrified in every moment, it is borderline traumatic. You’re not terrified of anything in particular, but you still feel terrified. As moments stretch out, beat by beat, every hair on your body feels electrified. Your senses are on fire. Your blood seems hot and thick. You can hear and feel your pulse BOING-BOING-BOINGing in your head, and you are just trying to get through another second. You are blind to everything else and any future. All there is is now and you must, somehow, get through this because there is no escape.
I can remember the understanding that dawned on me when I first heard Paul trying so hard to keep it together. Heard Ringo trying to distract with little drum fills, and for the first time truly understood how much George’s guitar is his voice.
But that is not at all what Mark Lewisohn got from these tapes. (By the way, I’ve done a few threads on this night as it breaks down, and I don’t have it in me to parse through and post all that audio again now.)
--
LEWISOHN: I mean, John— we need to talk about John Lennon on this recording. These recordings. Because he’s uh— he’s- he’s- he’s belligerent. Um, he’s under the influence of— I’m sure he’s under the influence of Prellies. Probably drink, as well. Um, he’s beguiling, he’s rude—
CS: —Yeah.
LEWISOHN: —He’s still charming. He’s— I mean he’s not horrible. He’s just —yeah— he’s just edgy!
--
On December 31st John’s “Battina” might indeed be beguiling, but on the 28th nothing is fucking “edgy” and it’s certainly not “charming.” It’s a dysfunctional family at Cracker Barrel desperately trying to get dad to stop screaming at the waitress.
But what is clear from the first moment to the last is that Paul is the conductor. At first John is just shambolic and a little wild, and Paul seems fairly relaxed, but it changes. All the sounds of everyone change as John unravels. There are times when I can just see Ringo, George and Paul looking at each other, and although Paul is the one who is landing the plane, it feels so much like a team effort.
(John, playing out the cycle that would become so familiar, has shaped up and is on his best behavior on the 31st and the band sounds great.)
I think we need to realize that this was just the dynamic. This is by far not John at his worst. By all accounts this was one of John’s best behaved Hamburg trips. It was a short trip, they had real bedrooms and a real manager, and they had a future they didn’t want to screw up. All those “funny” stories about John wearing a toilet on his head and laying on the stage drunk just smudge out the three other people in the picture. How much fun was it for them?
Derek Taylor says that one of the things that helped bring George back after he walked out of the “Get Back” sessions was Taylor going to him and saying, “Come back, don’t make Paul shoulder the burden of John all alone.” The tape from December 28th makes that so explicit.
There is the whole separate issue of Lewisohn seeming to be a terrible listener. He listened to the NAGRAS like a tribute and has gotten so many things wrong about them in interviews that I hope someone else (wink, wink AKOM) will handle the mess, because I do not have a podcast and this ain’t the best format for lots of audio. But hearing Lewisohn gush about John being “edgy” in these recordings in that weird, fawning voice—and completely fail to see and hear what the band was going through—troubles me in a much deeper way than almost anything else regarding the man. How can anyone be that blind?

On Death's Doorstep (pt 39/?)
[<<First],,,,[<Prev],[Next>] [ODD Masterlist]
Word count: 1381
Rating: Teen
Pairings: familial Losleep, past Logan/ofc, minor Karrot Kings & Anxceit
Warnings: dysfunctional family dynamics, past character death, I may have killed the therapist but we’re still managing to work through some feelings, google translate Spanish
~~~START~~~
A lot was happening in a very small amount of time and Remy suspected another move was in her future. Virgil’s dads — who were really nice — had been moved into the building and were now living in Janus’s spare room; Patton's room was still technically Roman’s spare room, but he’d been sleeping downstairs with his grandpas for the past few days. It would make more sense for them to have their own floor, besides Remy had been living in Roman’s room on Roman’s floor essentially all by herself ever since Virgil left.
Not that this really counted as living by herself, Barbra — who she wasn’t comfortable calling grandma just yet — or the twins, or Virgil’s dads were constantly popping in to check on her. Janus hadn’t been around much, and Remy knew they were up to something, but no one would tell her what it was.
She hadn’t seen Logan since the day after Virgil left, and she was perfectly content to go on not seeing him.
But all good things — not that this was very good, it was neutral at best — must come to an end, and when Remy heard at knock at the door, she found that it had been Logan.
“Remy,” Logan inclined his head, making no move to try to step past her into the apartment.
“Logan.” Maybe she was imagining it, but she thought he winced at the use of his name.
“You can’t hate me forever,” Logan stated, a faint undercurrent of anger coloring his voice.
“Wanna bet?” Remy arched an eyebrow and crossed her arms. She had plenty of experience arguing with would-be father figures from arguing with Mike, Logan had no idea what he was in for.
“I did not kill you–”
“You think that’s what I’m mad about?” Remy demanded, cutting him off vehemently.
Logan frowned, attempting to push his glasses further up his nose despite the fact that they had not slipped down even a millimeter.
“I do not see any other reason for your hostility towards me.”
“Estúpido!” Remy hissed, throwing her hands up in frustration. “Completo idiota! Lo siguiente que me vas a decir es que no sabes de dónde vienen los bebés! Eres un genio, te apuesto–”
“El príncipe es estupido!” Logan interjected suddenly, completely derailing Remy’s train of thought as she struggled to figure out what that meant.
“What?”
Logan’s gaze locked on the door hinges as he actually looked embarrassed for the first time since Remy had met him.
“I–” he started, cutting himself off and starting again. “I am ashamed to admit that spoken languages have never been my strong suit, and even when I was living with your mother I never reached a level of fluency required to understand native speakers when they truly got going.”
“…so you told me that the prince is stupid?” Remy asked. Surely there was something she was missing that would make this whole interaction make sense, she just couldn’t see what it was.
“Yes,” Logan agreed and refused to elaborate further.
The two of them stood in awkward silence for a moment before Remy decided to bite the bullet.
“So what happened?” She asked. “Between you and mom, I mean.”
“Your mother, as you likely know, does not like superpowers,” Logan started slowly.
Remy nodded, her mom had never said as much — not to her anyway — but over the years she’d gotten the sense that Remy’s powers stressed her mom out quite a bit. The manner of Remy’s death probably hurt her almost as much as her actual death.
“I was well aware of that while I was dating her, but as I had no intentions of becoming either a hero or a villain, I thought… perhaps I could be an exception.” Logan was clearly deeply uncomfortable with this conversation by the way he was twitching and shifting, but he continued. “I did not tell her that I had powers. One day, a month before your third birthday, she found me using my technokinesis in my workshop. She decided to leave and take you with her.”
“And what?” Remy demanded. “You just let her go? You didn’t want me?”
“Of course I wanted you!” Logan snapped. “But your mother wanted nothing to do with me! She threatened to turn me in to the authorities should I ever try to contact her or you again.”
“For having powers?” Remy asked. “That’s not a crime.”
“For selling my technology to supervillains.”
“Oh.”
All the fight drained out of Remy then, she was still angry, but she couldn’t exactly be upset at Logan for leaving if her mom had been the one to leave him.
“Technokinesis sounds cool,” She said eventually, grimacing at the way Logan lit up at the clear opening.
“Thank you. Successful inventions do require a knowledge base to build off of, but just allowing the technology to control itself does allow for some interesting experimentation. If you don’t mind me saying, I have noticed that you’ve added some interesting technology of your own to your repertoire.”
Remy shifted in embarrassment. “Yeah well… I just reverse engineered some shit I stole off of Gemini, which… were yours, weren’t they?”
“It was indeed my ‘shit’ that you got from Roman and Remus,” Logan preened. “I have been very impressed with your engineering talents; your ability to recreate and improve upon unfamiliar technology is astounding!”
“Uh, thanks,” Remy mumbled, not quite used to this level of excitement or encouragement from a parental figure. “Is that what you wanted to talk about? My ‘engineering talents’?”
“Ah, no,” Logan shifted from excited to almost embarrassed quickly. “I– I am aware that you are uncomfortable in my presence as I am your absentee father, as it were, and a supervillain, but I would like you to move in with me. On the top floor.”
Remy narrowed her eyes. “Why?”
“For many reasons,” Logan replied, slipping into teacher-mode. “For one, you are a minor, and living by yourself would supply you with undue amounts of stress–”
“I’m seventeen,” Remy objected. “And I’m hardly living by myself.”
“For another thing,” Logan continued, heedlessly. “Janus has informed me that living with their pseudo in-laws is ‘incredibly awkward’, and moving the Flores-Sanderses and Patton to their own floor would benefit everyone involved immensely. And finally, I cannot live with my mother anymore, she is driving me up the wall, so to speak.”
“Babs?” Remy asked. “What’s wrong with Babs?”
Logan’s eyebrows twitched every time Remy called his mom “Babs”, but he declined to comment on the use of the nickname. “As I’m sure you are aware by now, my mother is clairvoyant. I do not appreciate my every thought being taken as an invitation to have a conversation. I love my mother very much, but living with her is an exhausting exercise in control.”
Remy couldn’t help the way her lips twitched into a smirk.
“It is not funny!” Logan snapped. “I am a grown man, I do not need my mother weighing in on my dietary decisions!”
“That’s rough, buddy,” Remy deadpanned.
“Do not think I don’t recognize an Avatar quote when I hear one, my brother was quite a fan of cartoons and he was very insistent that I watch that particular one with him. He said I was very much like Sokka and was adamant that there were many important lessons to be learned from the program.”
“He sounds smart,” Remy commented, well aware that the twins claimed Logan was reluctant to talk about Emile Picani.
“He was very smart,” Logan agreed with a far off look in his eyes. “His methods were unconventional, but effective nonetheless. He would have been an exceptional therapist, or anything else he set his mind to.”
Remy shifted uncomfortably, she knew what was coming, but she still couldn’t quite believe it when the words slipped past her lips. “I’ll move in with you.”
“…really?” Logan asked incredulously. “You do not need to decide right away.”
“No I– I’m sure. After all, someone needs to save you from living with your mom well into your seventies.”
“I am not in my seventies,” Logan frowned.
“Not yet,” Remy teased, relishing the way Logan’s frown deepened.
He wasn’t ‘dad’, not yet, but so far, he was a vast improvement on Mike.
DID SNOW AND LUCY GRAY LOVE EACH OTHER?
I think his famous quote explains it all really ‘It’s the things we love that destroys us the most’ Notice how he uses the word ‘THINGS’ instead of ‘PEOPLE’ I think this is how Snow’s mentality has been since he was younger. Being born in the Dark Ages wasn’t easy for anyone: especially a small child in a dysfunctional family (refer to Tigris talking about Coryo’s father and Coryo stating how his mother died) He was raised in a hostile environment and was taught emotion is weakness. Having any attachment to people was weak (assuming the quote was said after the events between him and Lucy Gray) That ‘thing’ was that he couldn’t control her and more so, she held more power over him then he did her and it destroyed him.
They may have loved each other but this by no means was a healthy form of love (mostly contributed to the way they were raised/the circumstances of how they met) He loved the fact he could own her, control and claim her as his. The matter of the fact is pretty simple if you ask me: As we saw throughout the book, his thrust for power was small but evident at the beginning and grew as the story unfolded. Snow became obsessed with it and even spiralled out of control in the end. The simple answer is he prioritised it over everyone, even the woman he loved and it destroyed him.
I think the difference between the book and movie is due to the inner monologues in the book and if you only watched the movie (eliminating the extra context provided by the book) their love seemed healthier (as healthily as you can get for this series) But with the extra context of the book, showing what kind of person snow is: you see him for who he really is. The comparison reminds me of a celebrity’s self-directed documentary versing the exposé written about them (really bad metaphor but bear with me) Many of his inner thoughts are down right inhumane, helping Suzanne Collins further reflect the purpose of the book; Snow is never a good person but the world around him truly makes him the monster he becomes later in life. He developed this obsession with her due to this mentality and as her actions reflect, I don’t think she had that same connection. At best, she had more of a crush that was later shattered due to their unhealthy dynamic and Snow’s actions. At worst, Snow was simply a rebound for Billy and due to their circumstances when they meet; it was disguised as love, causing Snow’s paranoia to kick in and destroy what he thought they had.
I feel like he also saw her as somebody below him (her being Covey/district and him being Capital/son of the former president) He would always disconnect the idea of Lucy being District due to the Capital’s long time prejudice and he wouldn’t be doing that if he didn’t have those strong feelings for her. He always looked at people as how he can benefit from them (even his own family) and he saw many benefits from her but once she was no longer of use; and even seen as a threat, he saw her as a loose end. If they haven’t had so much emotional baggage that affected Snow’s mentality (obsession with power mostly among other things) they could have been happy for at least longer than they were (even if they weren’t endgame)
People who think Coryo and Lucy Gray didn’t love each other need to realise that love doesn’t have to be healthy to experience it. Love can be toxic and messy and can fuck you up real good. That’s just the part of to have love and lost. What he basically says in his quote, love can destroy you. His love for her wasn’t innocent and perfect but it was there. In the end he just loved himself more. You don’t spend 60+ years being haunted by someone you didn’t genuinely love. You also don’t marry someone you hate so that love can never make you feel weakness again. You don’t try to remove every reminder of them, you don’t and make the world forget them if you weren’t affected by them. And that’s the beauty of it all, the book shows love can come in different forms (no matter how dark and bad it may be at times) it’s shows everyone has their own story (the shift of perspectives between the Capital and the Rebels throughout books) The only people who can’t see or accept this are either too stupid or have no done their research.
JESUS CHRIST I TYPED A LOT sorry it’s like almost 1am and I have nothing better to do than ramble about these two cutie patooties. I need sleep but I need this movie on Netflix more. My brain isn’t braining properly so apologies for any mistakes. I am open to debates but I will admit, I never stop arguing so if u wanna debate lmk. If you want more 2am rants about this series, I can rant for years non-stop. Will I edit to add more babbles when I think of them? Yes but who cares
Anyways logging off I need sleep
COMING OUT ON JUNE 2023: "WHEN THE STARS ALIGHT" BY CAMILLA ANDREW
Tumblr media
Thanks to tumblr I've been fortunate enough to meet incredibly talented artists of all kinds. Among them, one of the greatest privileges this site has let me enjoy was that, last year, I got to read earlier versions of the two first instalments of this wonderful series: "The Essence of the Equinox". Now, I get to read the definite version of this indie book, and soon will be able to hold what's setting out to be a gorgeous print edition in my hands ^-^
Alongside some other short stories and a novelette I've read as well, tEotE portrays an intricately built magical world that's a welcome change of pace from the modern fantasy I had been finding trite, woefully misogynistic and repetitive in the last few years. That level of depth and originality in the worldbuilding alone would've been enough for it to carve a space into my heart, but it doesn't stop there.
I've always been a fan of descriptive, lyrical prose; the kind that makes you want to pace yourself and sit back to enjoy a good turn of phrase and daydream about the lovely (or terrible) scenarios it presents. If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, you'll find plenty of both here. On a personal note, I recommend reading on a full stomach: the food descriptions are particularly mouth-watering xD. But my favourite bit is how the different settings come alive in the narration, especially the contrasting dream-like Soleterea and the nightmare-inducing land of Mortos.
Other points in its favour for me, and I'm willing to bet, for a lot of the people who follow me, are its larger-than-life leads and its female-majority ensemble of characters, all of whom are varied and fascinating in their own right, with important roles inside the story, and who'll you get to meet in earnest thanks to an expanding omniscient narrator.
Tumblr media
Princess Laila Rose of Soleterea, from a powerful race of fallen stars in humanoid form, is the protagonist of the trilogy. In fairness, she's not the first character in the 'verse that truly caught my eye; that honour goes to a particular Mortesian blood sorcerer who you won't properly meet until the second book (which is intended to be published a year after this one). But she quickly rose in the ranks and has become one of my favourite characters, period; in this and any other canon.
First of all, she's the uncontested star (no pun intended) of the story, outshone by none (that one, I admit, was on purpose). She's a firm idealist whose optimism is put to the test in her journey; she possesses endless charm and a silver tongue, as well as difficult insecurities that make her all the more endearing to me. She's at the centre of everything, and the dynamics that spark around her are another one of the selling points of the series: from her toxic and most defining relationship with her Impératrice and mother Amira, to her complicated friendship with her guard and past paramour Lyra; and, of course, to the intense, passionate and doomed romance that propels the series.
The novel's plot is kick-started when Laila's work examining potentially dangerous magical objects leads her to discover what seems to be a demonic monster encased in a block of ice. He turns out to be Dominus, a prince of a hidden immortal race: the Occassi, from Mortos; a kingdom as different from the idyllic Soleterea as it can be. When he gets free Laila travels with him on a diplomatic mission to establish contact and relations with this species. This puts her right in the middle of that country's dysfunctional royal family: a heartless king, his reluctant heir, and an ambitious bastard son: Darius Calantis.
Tumblr media
I find him to be the best representative of Mortos' realm, in a similar way that Laila is for Soleterea. He's suave and shrewd and intellectual in a land that puts little value on anything of the sort, more interested in brute force and military conquests. His frustrated ambitions, routinely suffocated by a tyrannical father, might find an outlet thanks to this new realm. He is, definitely, another character to look out for ;)
Finally, I'll say that most of all, this book both subverts and surpasses expectations. For example, as someone who tends toward scepticism when it comes to romance (especially that of the female heroine/villainous male character variety), I nonetheless loved every choice pertaining to the romantic subplot in this book. And I must insist on how after this one, an even better sequel (with some of my most beloved characters in the series!) awaits you ^-^
You can find an official synopsis here on goodreads or storygraph, where you can add the book to your to-read list. I also recommend following the author @aninkwellofnectar on tumblr (and on her other sites) for updates, because "When The Stars Alight" will be available for pre-order very, very soon. As of now, she's offering Advanced Reader Copies as well, if that's something you guys might want to look into.
Oh, and before I forget: there's a short story by this author published in the Fall Into Fantasy 2022's anthology. It tells a tale from Laila's mother's youth, Amira. On top of being a delight for fans of cold, complex female leads and tragic sapphic romance enjoyers, it'll offer you a taste of the author's style and the world she's created.
I ask that if you're interested, or think someone you follow might be, you reblog this to give a boost to this talented indie author!
((I sent similar asks to other blogs and I don’t wanna make the rest of y’all feel excluded esp since it looks like half y’alls muses are losing their shit so… got any mental health HCs for your muse??))
I think this was kinda a mental health and background in general, I hope it helps!
More under the cut:
Perfectionist
● Skwisgaar is first and foremost a perfectionist in all he does. His need to be the best has him constantly playing scales, arpeggios, simple drills - and it's often more a tick of his to use his guitar the way Toki uses Deaddy Bear or Pickles uses drugs. It calms him to have his instrument with him in case he needs to play it to ignore his mom or whatever else annoys him. Very, very rarely does he leave it behind. He has a simple skincare routine, hair care routine, and makes sure he looks presentable as much as possible. Everything about him needs to be perfect, from appearance to performance. His need to perform at 100% at all times has given rise to other problems, primarily stress induced headaches, burnout, and a need to berate Toki and William when they fail to meet his standards.
Anxiety
● Skwisgaar being in the limelight and the need to perform in all areas of his life to the upmost perfect capability had led him to develop anxiety. Will he fail at staying the best? Will the fans turn on him? Will Toki become better than him? Does anyone else care enough to craft music? Will his mom call him again and berate him for ignoring her? It drives him nuts that no one else is striving for his level of perfection and sometimes he lashes out for the smallest inconveniences, having been stewing in thoughts for much longer leading up to it. Oddly enough Skwisgaar tends to know when he's worked up into an anxiety attack and tends to shut himself off when it gets to that point.
Dysfunctional Relationships
● It goes without saying Skwisgaar had a pretty absent mother and has a warped sense of what family, friendships, and relationships are. I think Serveta truly loved him, but since she herself was at the peak of her own life and career, she often used him as an excuse as to why she constantly had to try harder and harder to find willing men, housing, work, ect. Due to this, Skwisgaar has a very rocky maybe even stressful relationship with Serveta Skwigelf, and the very thought of seeing her sends him into a frenzy. Seeing how she and him moved around quite a bit for her work before she settled down into the cabin she lives now, Skwisgaar's only real lasting bond has been a dysfunctional one at best and has a hard time knowing how dynamics between people, friends, and even partners really work.
Hypersexual
● Due to exposure to Serveta's very 'active' lifestyle, Skwisgaar has a very active lifestyle too. For many, sex is a way to bond with someone that they truly care about whereas for Skwisgaar, it's just another activity in which he must perform to his fullest, with any interested parties. Primarily concerning to some is his adoration of the older women, which could be seen as him seeking approval from a mother-like figure since his own mother often blamed him for her failures. He jumps from person to person, even band to band, before becoming a member of Dethklok and finally establishing roots and forming some shaky friendships with the other members. His inability to understand how relationships work on a basic level has warped how he views potential partners.
History of Addictions
● Whereas Toki took over as lead guitarist and even seemed to thrive in the role when our neurotic blonde left for Sweden, Skwisgaar became a wreck when Toki vanished and started using drugs like the rest of the band to cope. Skwisgaar had vices, and when he indulged, he went hard into those addictions. Thankfully he finally feels like there's a support system in case he spirals out of control, but with the band spiraling out of control in general during that time and the fans finally turning on them asking about Toki, I believe he pulled himself out of it with help and managed to kick some of his vices to the curb for good. It's not the first time he's been told his vice is affecting his performance or that he is spiraling, and he knows deep down it probably won't be the last.
Abandonment Issues
● Skwisgaar's biggest defining trait when it comes to his mental health is his unwillingness to admit he is afraid of being abandoned. By the fans, by the band, by his friends and bandmates. Skwisgaar's childhood had a lot of men coming in and out of his life, all of whom wooed Serveta in hopes of becoming her one and only - and all of them leaving her once she moved on and to young Skwisgaar, also abandoning him. One could say this issue with potential father figures hit a peak with Serveta actually marrying Tỳr, and Skwisgaar trying to find that domestic bliss he craved as a child at the cost of leaving DethKlok. This fear of being abandoned has made it so he doesn't allow himself to become too attached to others, after years and years of disappointment from men claiming to be his new step-father. By the time Toki joins DethKlok, Skwisgaar has built these defenses to keep him from becoming disappointed if this too didn't pan out.
In conclusion, post AotD Skwisgaar sees Twinkletits infrequently purely because he sees it has helped Nathan and definitely helped Toki. Skwisgaar doesn't like admitting he might need help, and definitely isn't about to admit he has other issues unless it's to return the favor to Serveta and blame her for his visits to the rock talk specialist.
Victorian Era Fanged Four Fic Recs
So, like, my absolute comfort fic genre is that old staple that used to be such a standard, though you pretty much never see it anymore, and that makes me very sad. It's works set in the Victorian era, when the gang were all together and happily evil, William's a bebe fledgling learning the ropes, and you got this family unit/polycule that's simultaneously brutal as hell but kinda sweet and domestic. I will devour this fic, especially if the historical detailing is on point, and apparently some others wanna see this trope too so lemme spread the love and massacres.
Warning: A LOT of this fic contains noncon and torture and oodles of murders. If you want to know detailed warnings for a given piece, DM me. I'm also including some fics that are pre-Will's embrace but still Victorian and honourable mentions to a couple of Georgian era Darla/Angelus ones.
Ensemble Works
Peasantverse by Peasant - A goddamn masterpiece. The absolute foundational example of this genre. A series of works starting with William's siring (deliberately vague who did the deed itself) and going through the following years. Lots of intriguingly plotty stories, just so many, and everyone in the family gets some love. The historical detailing is absolutely wonderful, the dynamics are wonderful, worldbuilding is fantastic, with some delightful lil footnotes to give extra context to some of the historical points.
Rating: NC17 Length: 14 works, total 232,438 words
A Winter's Tale by Coquette - A road trip of sorts. I love it so. The fanged four on a journey Oop North. Truly engrossing, viscerally descriptive. Followed by Temper which is, sadly, a long abandoned WiP but still worth a read.
Rating: NC17 Length: 74926 words
Queen's Gambit by Josey - Lots of plotty intrigue and politics and gorgeous detail. 'The year is 1880 and the family is sorting things out amongst themselves. Plus politics – and that’s never pretty.'
Rating: NC17 Length: Long
Followed by:
Demon's Aria Oh my gosh you have to read this one. 1881. And more plotty intrigue and politics and a surprise encounter or two that you just truly have to see.
Rating: NC17 Length: Long
Followed by:
Master's Voice - It all comes to a head in 1882. Oh hey could that be the consequences of their actions arrivin? It just might be. Sadly this is another long-abandoned WiP but again it's well worth a read
House-Guests From Hell And How To Send Them Back There by Glassdarkly - Oh hey it's seasonal. The fanged four dealing with unwanted Christmas guests, and they're at their dysfunctional best. Delightfully funny.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 12353 words
The Perfect Present by Glassdarkly - And another seasonal one to go with it. A lil Christmas shopping.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1998 words
Charity Begins at Home by Glassdarkly - And one more seasonal one for the road. Well, things do come in threes. In a very grand house on the fringes of Victorian London heartwarming deeds of bloodthirstiness are afoot - or should that be bloodthirsty deeds of heartwarmingness
Rating: Teen+ Length: 6713 words
Ennui by Glassdarkly - Darla decides to shake things up a bit to reignite the waning passion in her relationship with Angelus. Things get in the way.
Rating: NC17 Length: 2240 words
Alone at Last by Glassdarkly - Darla and Angelus conspire to send the children away for a while.
Rating: Mature Length: 997 words
She's So Cold by Rebcake - Spike and Dru conduct a harmless experiment. Darla is not amused. Part of the Travels With Spike and Dru series (which has lots of good stuff go read the rest too!)
Rating: Gen Length: 100 words
Fanged Four Fairytales by Kita - Some lovely but brutal little smutty vignettes with delightful imagery
Rating: NC17 Length: 2210 words
The Web by kidcyclone - William contemplates, just a little snapshot, short and lyrical and gorgeous.
Rating: Gen Length: 573 words
FFWTF by soulless lover - What happens when you try to cram every Fanged Four badfic cliche ever into one fic?
Rating: Teen+ Length: 502 words
Darla/Angelus
A Lost Letter of Jane Austen by Hello Spikey - A clergyman's daughter writes her sister about two new acquaintances, a Mr. and Mrs. Angelus.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 2462 words
Followed by:
Darla's Letter by Hello Spikey - Darla reports to the Master on recent events regarding an authoress
Haunted Summer by Gill0 - In 1844 Mary Shelly recounts to a friend her time with our couple in the Year Without a Summer. Absolutely wonderfully captures Mary Shelley's voice and the writing style of the period.
Rating: Gen Length: 1443 words
Angelus/Will
Incandescence by wiseacress - A night at the theatre. Run and catch.
Rating: NC17 Length: 2568 words
Breathing Lessons by Hello Spikey - When Spike's coughing during a fire nearly gets them caught by Holtz' men, Angelus decides he needs to learn to stop breathing.
Rating: NC17 Length: 2499 words
The Adventures of the Concealed Closet by brutti ma buoni - Angel and Spike encounter Sherlock and Watson. Yes, really.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1399 words
Darla/Drusilla
Venus and Mars by Glassdarkly - A young gentleman encounters two mysterious ladies in the National Gallery, London, in 1874. An absolute classic.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 7972 words
In Pursuit of the Appropriate Man by lillianmorgan - Darla and Dru in 1860s Rome. Contains a delicious abundance of politely cutting Victorian speech
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1691 words
Ye Gods And Little Fishes by Beer Good - The first, aborted, trip to China, and why they never got there.
Rating: Mature Length: 868 words
Darla/Will
Lessons from the Lady of the House by joycometh - Darla discovers William's education is lacking. She sets things to rights.
Rating: NC17 Length 1317 words
Drusilla/Will
Tea For Two by Glassdarkly - Spike will go to any length to please Drusilla. All the way to Wonderland.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1347 words
nothing is more serious in life than female friendships ~ soulmate movie analysis (not spoiler free)
The first scene of Soulmate opens up with an early thirties something Ahn Mi So (Kim Da Mi) carefully observing a hyperrealistic portrait of her. She is informed by the curator of the art gallery that the piece was submitted by an artist named "Ha-Eun" for a contest but they have been unable to track her. Despite the evidence that is provided to suggest that Mi So and the artist are close friends, she denies this claim and states that she can be of no help.
We are then transported to Mi So's childhood and her first day at an elementary school in Jeju. Mi So has a dysfunctional relationship with her mother and is tired of having to constantly move from one place to another due to her mother's financial woes. It is on this day that the young Mi So meets Ko Ha Eun ( Jeon So-Nee) for the first time. After an eventful day of rescuing a kitten from the pouring rain and having dinner with Ha Eun's family, both girls embark on a lifelong friendship.
The two girls grow up together and bond over their mutual dream of painting and traveling the world. However, Mi So and Ha Eun are poles apart from each other. Ha-Eun is reserved and proper and grows up in a stable loving two parent childhood. She aspires to attend college and her father wishes her to become a painter. On the other hand, Mi So is extroverted and wild. She's a free spirit with an estranged mother. She dislikes school and unlike her peers, she attends a trade school by day and works an assortment of part time jobs to support herself. The idyllic friendship and inseparable bond of both girls is disrupted when Ham Jin Woo (played by the ever so handsome Byeon Woo Soek) enters their lives.
As teenagers, Ha Eun develops romantic feelings for Jin Woo. During a soirée, she and Jin Woo confess their attraction for each other during a game of "Go Stop" and they both end up dating. The dynamics between the three individuals is complex and a significant turning point in their relationship is when the three go on a forest hike to a wishing well. Ha Eun bruises her feet during the hike and stays behind as Jin Woo and Mi So continue their journey. At the well, the two unexpectedly share a brief kiss and Jin Woo ends up giving Mi So the necklace he was wearing, which is really an amulet to protect the wearer against misfortune.
Shortly after this trip, Mi So abruptly leaves Jeju for Seoul, leaving Ha Eun heartbroken. As the two girls wave their final farewells, Ha Eun is stunned to find her best friend wearing her boyfriend's necklace. Her grief of Mi So's sudden departure is overcome by a strong sense of betrayal. The rest of the film is a non-linear and sometimes alternate timeline depiction of the two friends as they navigate their relationship with each other and adulthood.
At its core, the relationship between Mi So, Ha Eun, and Jin Woo is essentially a love triangle, but its far more complicated than the two girls both being in love with same guy. I believe that both girls are physically attracted to Jin Woo, but they are actually truly in love with each other. What drives the conflict in their relationship is not only how far they drift from each other when their realities do not align with their ideals, but also the mutual possessiveness for each other. One scene that strongly propels this narrative is when the two reunite in their mid-late twenties. During a coincidental run-in with Jin Woo, Mi So discovers that her boyfriend/boss unalived himself and wasted all of their money before his death. Heartbroken and bankrupt, Mi So ends up living with Jin Woo and the two rekindle their "attraction" for each other. When Ha-Eun catches them living together, she angrily locks Jin Woo out of his apartment and confronts a drunken Mi Soo in the bathroom. Initially, it seems like Ha Eun is upset that her best friend and lover are having an affair. But, we realize that its so much more than that when Ha Eun emotionally confesses that before any men came into their lives, she was the one who loved Ha Eun. Ha Eun loves Mi So so much that it was absolutely devastating for her that she was kept in the dark and replaced by Jin Woo during a critical period of Mi So's life.
Though Soulmate has a fairly simple premise and short runtime , analyzing and discussing the film can be an arduous task because of its unconventional approach to storytelling and the many layers that are interspersed within it. However, if there was something that captivated my attention, it was the role of art in the film and the larger role it plays in shaping the protagonists' behavior. Both women are artists, but their styles are vastly different. Ha Eun relishes in hyperrealism and looks at it as a form of emotional truth seeking. We see this first during her first date with Jin Woo when she tells him that she has to draw him in order to confirm her feelings. Additionally, when she discovers that Jin Woo does not view her artistic passions as more than a hobby, she realizes that marrying him will also result in her being detached from reality, particularly her true identity. It was perhaps the first wake up call of many that ultimately led her to leaving him at the altar later in the movie.
On the other hand, like Mi So, her artistic style is eccentric and fantastical. Her work is more abstract and likened to that of Picasso with her often opting to offer more distorted versions of her subjects instead of making them appear as real as possible. Mi So adopts a similar approach to life as we see her often resorting to fabricating her life rather than telling those around her what her true circumstances her. As a young adult, Mi So sends optimistic and exciting life updates to Ha Eun in the form of letters but fails to include the mundanity and difficulty of her working an assortment of part time jobs or that the boyfriend she left to Seoul with ended up cheating on her. For me, it was even questionable if she truly traveled to Europe and that the gifts she brought were from there ( but I could have truly misunderstood this). Mi So's fabrications take a life of their own after she adopts Ha-Eun and Jin Woo's daughter after Ha-Eun's death from childbirth. This is seen in not only how the screenplay shifts from alternate timelines- one that is fake and one that is real, but also in how Mi Soo hides Ha Eun's death from the rest of the world not only by hiding the fact that she died but also by completing Ha-Eun's half finished portrait and submitting the very work she was questioned about in the first scene under her friend's name.
I don't think its far to brand Mi So as a liar and a con-artist, but I think her actions reflect her desperately clinging to and nurturing the existence of Ha-Eun even if she may no longer be physically present. It made me really think about who a soulmate really is and how the souls are always interconnected even when their bodies may not- much like the reference made in the film to how a shadow is always present when the sun is around.
Soulmate is one of those films that feels like art that needs to be treasured in a museum. It's meant to move its viewers rather than entertain them.
The Bear: Season 2 Thoughts (Mild Spoilers)
Hey y’all,
I binged The Bear S2 this week and I have things to say.
This show is so visually beautiful, the shots of the food, the tight shots on the actors - everything was gorgeous. The cinematography impacted the story so perfectly in a way that I am not used to witnessing in television versus movies.
I was rooting for every single character so much. Their stories were all expanded upon so well, and none of them were static. The acting was 10/10, I really bought the development of the relationships even though some of them seemed a little random coming off of S1. The writing for Carmy was perfect as a product of his dysfunctional environment (disclosure: my family is very similar to his, it was like watching myself in a character). Jamie Lee Curtis’ acting made me want to crawl out of my skin, which is a testament to how well she played the part.
In particular, I fell in love with Richie and Tina this season.
Richie got the perfect redemption arc - this season was truly his and I loved it. I could not stand him in S1, but S2 fleshed out his character so well. I want his character to get win after win, and I think he has has a long way to go in S3 (should we get it). Matty Matheson’s character was also a great counterweight to Ebon’s pessimism, I thought their dynamic was a lot of fun.
I feel similarly about Tina’s character. This season you’re really able to understand their motivations and fears, which I always adore. Liza was incredible in the role. On one hand I think the show is best as a stand-alone, but I could also watch Tina’s story by itself. Both she and Richie get a huge dose of self-confidence this season and it makes for a very endearing, relatable story. I think very often stories that involve that kind of realization are very commodified and dramatized when it comes to middle-aged protagonists, but the growth of these characters felt very real and well-deserved. (Side note - I follow Liza on Instagram now and she’s such a sweet lady. She reminds me so much of my mom.)
Sydney - Ayo Edebiri - is an incredible character and Ayo’s writing was perfection. Syd’s and Carmy’s signing “I’m sorry” was a really interesting touch and encapsulates their dynamic so well. I also oddly love the way she’s styled. When she’s not wearing her work clothes, her style isn’t flashy, but she looks fantastic always. Her style is so reflective of her character - often slouched, baggy styles with pops of colour. In my opinion she looks like an artist - a creative - which I’d say is pretty accurate to her reality.
Lionel Boyce’s portrayal of Marcus was once again very sweet, and I liked his somewhat less dramatic character arc. I didn’t love his little outburst at the end of the season, but as a character that’s been such a consistent teddy bear it’s nice to see some more conflict introduced to his story.
After this season, I want more Will Poulter and Olivia Colman. I am very much in love with them, and their brief parts in the series were so lovely (despite feeling a little random). Olivia Colman brings the most incredible energy to every project I have seen her in, she is radiant and I love her. I also love the attention to detail with Poulter’s tattoos having a story behind them.
Claire was a good character as well, but she didn’t have the same effect on me as Poulter and Colman. While they’re all static characters, Claire was just... too perfect. Not entirely manic pixie dream girl perfect, but I didn’t find her particularly compelling. For what the character was, she was played well by Molly Gordon, and it was nice to see Carmy get the chance to be something other than an anxious unhappy wreck for a few episodes.
My singular big criticism as of now is that there was so much compressed into this season that it all felt a little random. There were a lot of characters introduced in a very short period of time. While it was nice to see the environment external to the restaurant and I think all of those characters fit very well, it was just a lot. I think the Christmas dinner episode was very important to the story, but the rest of the season could have used a little more breathing room that that episode took up.
I binged it, but this show deserves to be mulled over.
Black Sails X review (S2E2)
Spoilers for up to and including E10.
"Strange pairs, Lieutenant, they can achieve the most unexpected things."- Thomas Hamilton
Billy's back! I mean, he's being tortured, but he is still technically back. Unfortunately, because my brain only ever wants to cause me pain, my first thought was of what he's going to go through when he finds out Gates is dead.
We go from that awful biblical torture, to Thomas Hamilton reading the Bible (I want to say Genesis, but I truly know so little about it), and I'll get to the flashbacks later but the way the camera pans over to Flint as Thomas reads "it is not good that he is alone" just breaks my heart.
Anyway, first to Nassau, where shit's getting real. Ned Low's quartermaster is mad at him because he did massively fuck up with the blood on the crates and all that, but Low's violent, vulgar humour and whatever the hell that personality is has somehow won over his men. It's a bit like the season 1 Flint/Gates dynamic, in that Low has convinced his men to go along with his bullshit under the promise of some kind of passive payout, while painting the logical quartermaster as some kind of villains for pointing out flaws in the plan. In this situation, however, the captain seems to be completely irredemable and his plan for massive riches is to endanger and exploit a teenage girl. It's a much harder sell for the audience than attacking an empire. Missing the support of his crew, Meeks seeks support from Eleanor, who is less than happy about her reputation as someone who "(deposes) captains", given what it did to her the last time she did it. I mean, as it was with Vane, it would probably be a good idea to get rid of Low, just on the basis of him being kind of evil and also a massive dickhead, but, again, looking at where Vane is now, I can see why she wouldn't want to risk it. Speaking of Vane, he has somehow been talked into attending the consortium meetings, even if all he does during them is smoke and look general detached from everything. Baby steps, I guess.
Vane's attendence is the only thing that's going well for Eleanor and the consortium, though. The whole shipping plan that was presented as the solution to everything last season is barely working, and, even worse for Eleanor, it's her family name that's the problem. Vane's reputation is proving useful, but, as he (at least feels that he) holds all the power, it's down to him to decide whether Eleanor and her consortium can coninue to hold any power in Nassau, which is not ideal, because he's unreliable at best. Still, he's not entirely wrong when he refers to Eleanor as "a tyrant too weak to enforce her own tyranny". It's a harsh interpretation, sure, but it's not necessarily fully incorrect. Maybe it's this accusation of weakness that pushes her to take a harder stance with Ned Low. That was probably a bad place to start, though, because that man does not care about anything and angering him only results in further violence. Like, a lot of violence.
This level of violence is probably what causes Eleanor to relent and go to Vane for help. She knows that she can't appeal to him with her power, as he's already expressed his disdain for her "tyranny", so she appeals to his "concern" for her. Honestly, these two just keep making each other worse, but maybe if Ned Low's downfall can be brought about as a result of their dysfunctional relationship, maybe it's worth it. And then there's the "prize" Eleanor mentions. Poor Abigail Ashe.
And while violent shit is going down at Eleanor's bar thing, soft, romantic shit is going down at the brothel. I love this plotline so much-- the way it shows Anne slowly coming to terms with her sexuality and processing what it means for her and Jack is just so well-done in all its complexity and,,, emotion. Oh god I love them all so much. This is also possibly the first relationship in the show that is portrayed in a genuinely romantic way, and it's a sapphic relationship, which is one of the many reasons I love this show. It would also have been so easy to just take this whole Anne/Max/Jack dynamic and just put Jack in the role of jealous boyfriend and portray Anne and Max's relationship as just cheating, but my beloved Black Sails had better plans than that. Instead, we show Anne's internal conflict between her feelings for Jack and what she feels she owes him and her feelings for Max-- ones she probably hasn't let herself acknowledge before. Similarly, we all know by now that Jack isn't the kind of person to cause a massive scene and confront the other two, nor does he necessarily even want to. Instead, he just turns up to talk about his business plans. I mean, those are some good ideas, but there's a time and a place. They could also have had Jack go down the route of just completely ignoring the relationship, diminishing the importance/significance of sapphic relationships, but instead we get his wonderful reaction: "Darling, I can understand why you wouldn't want to tell me about this, but please know that all I have ever wanted is for you to be happy. Come to bed when you're through." Just everything about it, from the tenderness of the darling, to the acknowledgement of the conflict Anne must be feeling, and the way his love for her just radiates off him. I don't think I've ever loved Jack (or Anne for that matter) as much as in this moment.
Now to the Walrus crew (technically not on the Walrus but I can't be asked to differentiate at this point). Our unlikely couple are finally getting their shit together and making each other worse. Silver is still asserting that he does not want to be a pirate, and is simply sticking with the crew for the sake of Flint's get rich quick scheme. Flint is so committed to being a pirate that he's going to take down the british empire... somehow. These two are obviously going to work so well together. Both of them are using manipulation as their tactic of choice, but on different levels. Flint knows what he wants and goes directly for leadership. He starts with a slightly misguided attempt at small talk about books with Dufresne (he's so me fr), then turns the conversation into a confession, as if he believes that he can convince Dufresne that he's really really sorry and then Dufresne will just let him be captain again. Don't get me wrong, I do believe Flint when he says the guilt is killing him, but I just don't thing D is the best audience for this. Flint also knows this, as he (maybe) goes for a different tactic. It's never made explicit whether Flint meant to deceive or advise Dufresne. I'm sure his intentions weren't purely to help Dufresne, but he might have genuinely been advising Dufresne for the reasons he believed-- that if Dufresne had successfully taken a prize, his position would have been much more secure. I think it's much like the scene with Billy, neither we nor, possibly, Flint, know what his intentions were. Either way, Dufresne goes ahead with Flint's idea, one that De Groot approves of from a sailing perspective, which really says something about Flint's talent not just as a leader of men, but as a sailor. It really makes you think about what would have happened had he not had to leave London for whatever those reasons were.
As Dufresne's mission to capture a merchant ship goes on, it becomes harder to believe that Flint has the crew's best interests at heart. He narrates the whole thing to Silver and clearly knows what Dufresne should be doing, but makes no effor to advise him on this. As a result, the attack quickly goes downhill. Dufresne also runs into another problem-- aside from his lack of experience-- which is that he doesn't have Flint's notoriety and nor does he have the charisma to make up for it. It's probably this that tips the merchant captain off and gives him the confidence to call for his crew to resist. Then Dufresne's lack of experience also comes through as he doesn't know how to handle the crew in such a situation. Controlling a crew under fortunate circumstances is one thing, but, as we've seen with Flint, retaining their loyalty under hardship and chaos is something else entirely. Dufresne took control of the Walrus crew after a patch of difficulty under Flint, then found fortune under his time as leader but, as soon as he has to deal with something like this, he crumbles. As Mr Logan points out "no one is in fucking charge" on the ship-- Dufresne is too stubborn to give up on a mission that the rest of the crew have lost faith in, De Groot, voice of wisdom though he may be, doesn't hold much authority as a leader, and Flint is still disgraced. Ultimately, Flint is essentially decided as the best option, helped by his willingness to immediately order an effective retreat. Then he heads off to the captain's quarters with all the confidence in the world. The vote hasn't even happened yet, but he knows how to lead well enough to know exactly what he's just done.
At the end of the day, he's still nice to Dufresne, reassuring him that the vote was close-- Flint isn't the type to gloat, at least not in such an over way, and Dufresne could still be a powerful ally. And, most importantly, Flint has a new jacket.
Silver, meanwhile, is taking a different approach to winning back his position on the crew. Honestly, this showcases what I love about S1/2 Silver: he's scrappy. He's not necessarily inherently a team player, but he knows how to work with and against people to ensure his own survival, and, unlike (sorry) Flint, he does it in such an entertaining way that he also ensures that he's well-liked. Flint, god bless his autistic heart, has absolutely no idea what the hell Silver is playing at, and Silver gives him some kind of story about his past. Now, given Silver's track record of lying his ass off, we have no idea whether or not this is true, but, regardless, it's the only insight we've got into his life pre-merchant vessel. Honestly, it doesn't tell us a whole lot that we don't know-- well-off men were rarely conscripted onto merchant vessels as crew members-- but it still fleshes out the sense of powerlessness and potential tragedy in Silver's past. Either way, as the days go by, Silver's ploy of playing the men off against each other starts yielding some results, and, as Flint-- who he has formed an uneasy alliance with-- comes back into power, his survival becomes almost guaranteed.
And now we get more London flashabcks, i.e. backstory of Flint's previous unlikely partnership. In this partnership, however, Flint/McGraw is the realist, and Thomas is the dreamer. He's the one who tells McGraw that, in approaching Nassau, he should forget the pirates. Sure, he's not necessarily wrong in framing piracy as a symptom of a wider issue, but very few men, let alone members of the nobility, would have had the optimism and insight to take that approach. McGraw still tries to point out the flaws in the rest of the plan, listing the extensive resources that would be needed to establish stability on Nassau, and still Thomas is unfazed. I'm not sure whether he's being incredily smart or incredibly stupid about this, but honestly I support him.
Then we get a little insight into the other side of McGraw's life-- his relationships within the navy. It's clear that Admiral Hennesy holds him in some regard, and sees his potential (honestly, he's giving father-figure vibes in this scene, not necessarily good ones though), but, because of his class status, his peers don't hold him in that level of regard. This is yet another problem with the empire/civilisation that we haven't explored much yet, but classism is clearly a massive problem in both James' life and British society as a whole. Then, as the taunting continues, we see what we recognise as Flint's kind of passion and violence arise in McGraw, and a fight breaks out. Hell, he even looks more like the man we know as Flint as he gets roughed up and even gets some blood on him (a key aspect of Flint's appearance). I don't blame him for reacting, but Hennesy isn't wrong when he expresses about "the thing that arises in (James) when passions are aroused [where] ... good sense escaped [him]", and what it could become when "exposed to extremes", which we have already seen with Gates, and which I can't help but think is going to make some kind of comeback in episodes to come.
Hey! Just saw this so sorry for the late response but wanted to respond. I am the “Unpopular Opinions” Person btw
OBVIOUSLY all the respect is meant. You are a genius <3 love your work, this is just some commentary
- Brennan IS a worse person than Killian because Killian really… doesn’t have THAT much agency in his life. Idk maybe I’m being too soft on him but I’ve always emphasized w/ children who make bad/objectively ambiguous decisions as the result of a turbulent life. Therefore, where Killian and Brennan made the SAME level of bad choices, Killian was genuinely a good person who was just trying to be a teenager/live his life in this “Fish out of Water” scenario he was put in. Brennan, meanwhile, came off like he had A LOT more agency and… strength, so to speak, not only in his own life but who he was in general. Therefore it’s a lot harder to excuse him for the stupid shit he puts himself in (like involving himself w/ the Principal’s son AND getting drawn into the bad/rebellious crowd, etc.). Therefore, Brennan is a worse person because generally those people (the reckless people who know they can make different, better choices and CHOOSE NOT TO), don’t tend to make the BEST decisions for their loved ones as well. Like I could see Brennan pulling some real dick behavior and causing shit for the people he cares for. Meanwhile, Killian? I highly doubt it. It’s the difference between “all bark but no bite” (Killian) and vice versa. One is just better.
- I agree on that! I’m just saying that IRL, the friends that stick will stick around. No amount of distance can TRULY crush any friendship. No doubt. Meanwhile… him relying on his friends as his family? Idk. There’s a difference between “My friends are my family” and “my friends can replace my family.” One is a MASSIVE cope and the other is just having close platonic/non-traditional family relationships. I still say Ireland would’ve given him time to grieve, properly, and become a more stable/stronger person. Just because something is harder to do doesn’t mean it’s the wrong choice.
- They are healthier!! You’re so right. And yeah, Staz and Ethan are similar but not the same people BUT… Will ALWAYS gave me the wrong vibes. I don’t vibe w/ hypocrites, and he is a MASSIVE one, considering him and Jude are EXTREMELY alike (Will just have the advantage of not having a horrible relationship w/ his Mother, otherwise I GUARANTEE he would’ve made similar if not the same choices). HOWEVER, the dynamics are EERILY similar. Two soft boys from subtly troubled homes change the perspective of two much more damaged, aggressive boys? Yeah, apologies if this wasn’t the correct read in the slightest, but both couples sort of gave me those vibes tbh. Although not ENTIRELY, clearly, as they are both complex enough to not be carbon copies (I realized this might’ve been insulting and so sorry if it is. I’m not trying to say that at all, they just follow the same TROPES.)
- You were an EXCELLENT writer (I mean your characters than were ten times more complex than mine are NOW), I just think the plot needed the characters to do what it needed them to do and there wasn’t a lot of time for diversions. Also, it really isn’t your fault if they were “a nightmare.” Hollywood/etc. LOVES the dysfunctional friendships. Just look at Riverdale! White Lotus (if you need a more updated example)! Gossip Girl! Literally any superhero movie. It’s just more fun for friends to sort of hate each others guts, unfortunately. ESPECIALLY in Young Adult media. Benji is still a bad friend to Ethan and Gideon tho… I will DIE on this hill (plus Sonnet and Ethan are the platonic soulmates we never got to see).
And that’s it! Thank you so much for your time!! I hope I never veered into disrespectful or rude while writing this. I feel like I did at multiple points so if I have, I am extremely sorry, clearly not my intention. I have a HUGE amount of respect to you and obviously, these are tour books, I just was curious to see if you would hate these tbh. All the love <3 Have a great day/evening!!!!
Cheers :)
This was super respectfully worded and I really appreciate the perspective! As the writer, it's sometimes hard for me to imagine how things can be interpreted differently than I intend, so I appreciate these kinds of honest perspectives. It gives me a lot to consider when writing in the future! Thanks for sharing! :)
I haven't gone into it as much yet:
But one bit that I actually like to explore is that as unpleasant a tragedy as it is, the existence of Daniel Dream ends up actually being somewhat healthier at least for him and the Endless that he's close to. I elect to disregard any canon not written by Neil himself featuring Daniel, and with Daniel Dream and Death it stems from a simple thing that the two have in common that she did not with Morpheus, while replacing what he and she both had in common (namely a deep blend of depression and discontent with life buried in two equally toxic ways behind a chasm of poor communication).
Daniel Dream does not put Death on the pedestal that Morpheus did, so they have actual communication, not assumptions in the 'make an ass out of u and me' aspect, and the two are both the most human and the most humanized of the Endless. And ironically because of this Daniel more than any other can see through the various masks Death makes, creating an irony for a while where some of the dynamics invert.
Daniel becomes kind of a return of the earlier days of Dream as an artisan-king content to create and less obsessed with the realities of rule, Death seeks to hide her feelings and her problems and it doesn't work and she's not accustomed to dealing with that or someone who both cares and due to that greater humanity refuses to leave her alone to (not) deal with things the way Morpheus did.
The flip side is that Daniel Dream ends up with ultimately a harsher relationship with Desire when he figures out Desire's role in the death of his previous aspect, amplified by the reality that Desire finally really did kill him and thus it becomes a mirror of Death and Despair in that the two interact at times in family meetings and seldom since, with Desire getting what they wanted in monkey's paw fashion. They won the prank war, essentially, and Dream acknowledges that.....and they have even less time with their sibling than they did before and no-one to blame but themself.
It also hinges, too, on the ideas that Dream was changing anyway with or without the fishbowl, and that a Dream who changes without dying incorporates some of the best aspects of Daniel Dream while retaining the aesthetics of Morpheus. *But* if he remains Morpheus he also retains the flaw that his older sister is this perfect ideal being on a pedestal when the real Death is never anything close to this, and where her own problems remain locked behind barriers he never sees nor acts upon.
The Death and Dream sibling relationship in its Morpheus and Death incarnation is anything but healthy, and in the beginning as I write it, at least, their dynamics switched and it ultimately boils down to Death being that brittle and aloof figure and Dream (and Destruction, who was always there at work but never really as a brother and it takes the two far too long to realize that and too late) is the only one who actively tries to reach out to her.
Delirium/Delight does, too, but in the end Death in her sorrow and then her aloofness is too withdrawn and she very much is still parentified with Delirium which creates most of their friction.
Pretty much all of my Sandman stories hinge around Death as the protagonist (though I like to do a trick where key moments in one POV are seen in the eyes of others because the story will loop back around to that POV and that moment and in that particular instance it gives away too much to have it there). The Endless as siblings and their blend of eldritch entities and people are all dysfunctional and the dysfunction all works vastly differently.
Death is not Dream, and her sibling relationships are not those of Dream. Nor is her relationship to the idea of being an Endless the same, as I've gone into before. She can and does give up her power for 24 hours and truly dies, and is the Endless accordingly who has truly died most. Dream copes with his problems in dramatic and flamboyant ways, Death digs in in denial and in letting the pressure cooker draw nearer to the explosion and then finally erupting when it never really had to do that in the first place.
The differences in that (and the similarities) inform much of how she interacts with Morpheus and Delirium, the two of her siblings she spends the most time with, and everything with her and Destruction.
