Hazbin Hotel | Pilot (2019)

How is this so good?? Even though it’s on an indie budget, it’s basically stuffed to the back with creativity and expressive, engaging movement.

Hell can be such a well-trodden, trite aesthetic, but this world isn't predictable for an instant. Every environment has an iconically jagged, lopsided design and a very on-the-nose sight gag or two, and the characters are all wonderful colorful freaks with a beautiful diversity of mutant monster parts along with the evergreen appeal of the manic fangy grin.

I love the idea that Hell is not a fiery torture chamber but a Las Vegas paradise of debauchery where the worst people get to do whatever they want, at the cost of being constantly surrounded by abject cruelty and violence and being crushed instantly if they wind up on the bottom of the pile.

I’m really stunned by how many different razzle-dazzle ideas they fit into one episode, from songs to puppet-style flashbacks to sideshow supervillain battles. But most of all, the way every scene has such bombastic, creative boarding and animation. It feels like every single shot someone thought ‘how do I punch this up to be a little more unique and expressive?’ It definitely has that slightly sloshy, loose quality of indie animation, but I think it fits quite well with the crazy, messy tone.

My favorite character is CHARLIE. I can’t believe we get a woman with such a cute, classy butch wardrobe. She’s my little Dead End reject and I love her. The tension between her sweet positivity and everything around her is just agonizing. It wouldn’t work nearly as well if she were purely a naive innocent getting ground into the dirt, but she clearly has a real awareness of her situation and can dish it back when she has to. Vaggie and Angel Dust are really appealing too. They add good stuff to the dynamic and I love how much their designs stand out.

I will say I mostly love the first two thirds, and the third act starts to drag. I really want to like the Radio Demon – he and his distorted voice have incredible Onceler appeal – but it feels like his whole manner is too blaring and overpowering and he just sucks all of the air out of the scene. I don’t even quite know why, it just makes me a little dizzy to watch and listen to him. The gambler guy didn’t make much of an impression on me, but I love the little maid girl. The stuff she says is so funny and not-PC.

Really one of the most unique things about this show is that it’s perfect bait for the very real online contingent of kids and adults who make self-indulgent Deviantart OCs and are head-over-heels for anything demons, furries, spiky-haired, spiky-toothed, badass, and creepy. That’s looked at with so much cringe now, but I think it’s awesome when a creator grows up in a certain fandom and then makes something where their stylistic influences and obsessions are plain as day. It’s so sweet.

I didn’t expect this to be a favorite, but it was! I was very ‘sitcom tropes’, so I thought it might feel like it was trying too hard and not using the show’s strengths, but instead the balance worked really well. It was kinda like, this could probably happen to any set of characters, but I love that it happened to these characters. <3

King was such a little bastard today. Truly, his worst qualities to the fore! And Luz’s hurt feelings were so sincere and touching! Poor baby girl. It’s so cute that she loves tropey feel-good friendship romance adventure stories. Thinking about the gushy fantasy slop she might have written makes me melt into a puddle.

Eda and Lily’s dynamic was soooo fun once they really met up. The layers of affection and frustration feel really natural. Although earlier, Lily’s dismissal of Eda’s abilities felt so strange and out of nowhere that I was entirely certain she was the one trying to bait Eda into a trap. (Hey! This is the first episode that I’ve only seen once before!) I can’t believe they both fell for the exact trick Luz fell for in the second episode. I like how The Owl House is a show about how you shouldn’t trust men.

This show has so much going on. Even in the episodes I don’t like as much, there’s always new ideas being introduced or developed. It’s exciting!

Next time: Don’t get put in the baby class, for babies.

Unsure if i’ll have time to post it this week but :’3 i’ll get it done!!! honestly i just think bfb!toru is insanely attractive so this is mostly an outlet for that but . i have a plot mapped out kind of… the unrequited love trope is just perfect for him but it’s Me so it’ll probably be less angsty and more funny/bittersweet !!

THE BELOVEDEST OF THEM ALL …… my extremely neglected best friend’s brother!kenjaku fic T_T my magnum opus even . i started writing it out a while ago but had to stop bc i can’t decide how to format it …. i think it’d be best to tell the story through a lot of flashbacks but it’s difficult to decide where to put what flashbacks in a way that doesn’t disturb the flow, yk??? but i do have everything outlined and i’m super excited to finally post it :33 someday… bfb!kenny is the actual loml i have so much lore planned for him. this fic is just a whole bunch of yearning and tension… the tiniest tiniest bit suggestive bc he truly makes me ill.

nervously, your gaze trails towards the stairs. worried, your teeth gnawing at your bottom lip. kenjaku notices. a large palm cradles your cheek; making sure your eyes stay locked onto his own. ”don't worry about him,” he soothes, a rough thumb smoothing down your skin. ”it’s just us here… just you and me. why don’t you take a deep breath for me, hm?” (you do. without thinking. as if your body was waiting for instructions, waiting to satiate this gnawing desire to impress him, make him proud. be good for him.)  “now,” he exhales, in tandem with you, molecules mingling together. “do you want this?”

ANOTHER DEARLY BELOVED WIP that’s been rotting in my drafts for a while ….. 👉👈 i think that out of all of these fics this is the first one that i wrote the outline to?? probably even before i made this blog. it’s basically just a canon-aligned au where gojo navigates his maybe-possibly-feelings for you, a new teacher at jujutsu high!! sooo really just my attempt to write what i view as a more canon-aligned gojo and his feelings towards love :3 mostly character-centered fluff and slowburn… some office au vibes…. i’m very fond of this reader!! and i love this version of gojo so bad i really hope i can do him justice…

my sickeningly fluffy cult leader geto fic <333 bc i’m spreading the agenda that he is a puppy of a man towards his s/o. this one is just meant to be funny and sweet!! i adoreee the thought of him dating a retired sorcerer with a normal ass job so in this one the reader works at a preschool…. and they’re meant to attend some kind of event for the preschool + is offered to bring a plus one. mild chaos ensues (geto doesn’t want to be anywhere near your non-sorcerer colleagues but he also wants to support you so he’s having a bit of a crisis rn…..) i LOVE this one and i’m so excited to write it out <333333 i think this geto is the most endearing man alive.

I didn’t remember this as one of my favorites cause I think the main set pieces and a lot of the jokes didn’t grab me as much. But it has such a fun, cozy, playful vibe!

Cute Luz was in top form today. She just lights up a room. I think when she’s written like this, saying things in a sweet, odd, idiosyncratic way, she just multiplies the charm of any plotline.

I really like what’s going on with the Bat Queen which I guess I won’t spoil here! It’s a really cool twist. And the main arc is really sweet! I love hurt/comfort.

But I wasn’t that interested in the trials drama or Hexside pride. (Wait, that makes me imagine a Boiling Isles pride parade, which is practically something that could happen in this show 🥺) It’s really hilariously bland that Gus’s personality in this episode is waving flags. But still, I got some good laughs out of him and his line reads, like “must be the dorsal fins” and “that was a bad plan!”

I really enjoyed Eda in this one too. Real Eda’s characterization in her few scenes felt really sharp, and Beast Eda’s acting had so much personality! I got such an interesting sense of what she was thinking and how much she was ‘present’.
