I'm not a religious person, myself, but I'd like to share a piece I am working on for a family member, regardless. I've struggled with whether or not to share this one as I tend to believe that the people who follow this man do more harm than good to others, but I am proud of my progress here. I have been fairly distracted by daily life these days, but I imagine the piece should be done within a month or so. :) A few next steps I plan to take include taking in the bridge of the nose just a bit and extending the inner corner of the eye presented on the right side of this photo, perhaps lengthening the beard a smidge (undecided), and of course getting to work on the eyes, hair, and throat. I may deepen the color of the lower lip with a glazing pass, as well.
--------------------------------------
Edit 07.10.23: Another update on weekend yeezus progress (third photo). Definitely going to be changing some things about that hair, I think. Eyes will be next. Nearly had a meltdown over the throat shadow (which I have come to like for the most part but may tweak just a bit). Welcome to art! 😂 I do wish that I had access to my full scope of supplies at present though, as this is a painting that would be much better suited with some glazing. ESPECIALLY for that throat shadow. But alas, I am making do with the supplies that I have.

I know it’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted much but I promise to be back soon! The holidays have been a little crazy.  For now, have a quick 10 minute sketch of my old friend Cam’s dog.  We reconnected tonight after not speaking for around 6 years or so. We swapped selfies to show each other how we’ve grown and this sketch stems from my hyper-fixation on the judgement from his dog, Artemis, in the background of his photo. 😅

Progress on the piece loosely called "Moon Dip".  Waiting on this layer to dry before I add more yellow highlights to the water nearest the moon (and surrounding the astronaut's feet) and more details to the astronaut's suit including helmet. May gold leaf little pieces on the moon but we will see.

First progress shot on an unnamed piece that I’ll call “Moon Dip” for now. :)  The plan is to place an astronaut in a sitting position, dangling their feet on top of the moon. Perhaps some stars in the background or a very dim suggestion of a galaxy, but I feel as though the waves already detract from the focus that is meant to be the astronaut so we will see.  May add a bit more darkness to the waves closest to the moon but keeping the yellow glow. I’ll likely be extending the yellow glow lightly through the middle of the painting as well. c:  Deciding whether or not to gold leaf the moon. I’m thinking currently of adding craters (softly) to it and speckling bits of it with gold flakes. But I’ll need to decide on that before I place the astronaut (rough draft sketch in second photo).
Additionally, after months of getting my bearings with the recording and editing process, this one will finally be the first video post once completed!

Oil on 2 ft x 2 ft HDF board. Oil paints used: Gamblin and Michael Harding Solvents/Mediums: Gamsol only thus far. 2 hour progress tonight. Progress shots 1 and 2 about a week apart. 2 hours tonight on my father’s face. Did not pay attention to how long I worked on the base of myself but it was probably around the same amount of time.  I would strongly prefer not to stop my father’s face at this moment because given the way I am painting it (not layered, but rather in blocks and shapes alla prima) it is truly best to finish it all at the same time or use a drying retardant medium.  These are lessons I will take away for next time :).  However, I have a headache so this may be all for tonight. Or at least for a bit.
Please forgive the so-so lighting as I am without editing software temporarily.

Update on the sketch / watercolor.
From here I plan to watercolor a bit more (mostly value and saturation changes) and then incorporate colored pencil.
