JACK - ANTHOLOGY OF A YOUNG WIZARD 18: Misery's Run
Let me go! Cristina says in an exasperated manner to the man. You are mine! he replies. Then marry me, you coward! Or is it that you only thirst for what you can’t have? asks Cristina. Aye, there’s nothing but your fucking flower between these legs that you can offer to this wretched world, replies the man. Look at you, fine fellow, sinning. May you burn in hell! says Cristina. I’ll gladly make you wait for me there, the man says followed by a thud. My legs are frozen in place, I can’t move. Fuck! I hear the man speak. Silence poisons the air around me as a million thoughts run through my head. Fuck, I tell myself as I start running in the opposite direction of where the two were. Why? Why did it have to happen? I ask myself. The more I run, the more familiar the setting becomes. I can’t understand this, I tell myself as I begin to slow down. What is it with this place and murders? I ask myself as I stop running. The clouded sky covers the moon turning the streets dark. I once more create flame in the darkness to see where I am. Trying to find my way towards Stephen’s Inn. A thought asking me why did I run popped into my head. The answer to which, I had none. Yet a jolt of fear struck my heart as I slowly made my way towards the inn. After an hour of wandering, I can finally see the inn and as my whole heart feels a little bit lighter.
I open the door to see Arcus, alone, drinking. Evening, I say. Arcus jolts up then turns with a defeated look on his face towards me. What do you want? he asks. To go sleep, I respond. Why here? Couldn’t you go anywhere else? he drunkenly asks. I do not know any other place to sleep, I respond. Why don’t ya sleep outside with the dogs… Or better… In the river with them fishes… says Arcus. That’d be uncomfortable, I snarkily respond. Yer right, probably, responds Arcus. Can I go now? I ask. Why does Stephen not listen? If he listened, he would have been doing so much better. But he always have to do whatever he feels is right, he stumbles in his words. You mean ha… I try to correct him before getting interrupted. Did you know he had a wife? No. You did not know that. How could you. You devilish wizard. Or maybe you knew. Of course you knew with yer magic and thoughts and stuff. Then I guess you knew she died. Childbirth. It was simply monstrous. The baby came out hanged and blue faced as she died. I pitied Stephen, such a tragedy… says Arcus. I am sorry to hear that, I respond. Of course yer sorry. Anyone would be. Even the devil’s spawn can’t shed a tear to such tragedy. Let me tell you something wizard. Whatever you came here looking for, good luck finding it. But pray that it doesn’t find you first… An unsettling silence sets after what Arcus just said. Here… Take these keys. Do whatever. See you never, says Arcus as he throws me the keys and leaves. I hate today, I tell myself before throwing myself in the bed and falling asleep instantly.
A much needed sleep, a much needed silent morning with the sweet chirping of birds gracing me with their voice. I either slept through people going to wherever they need going in the morning, or I woke up too early for noise to be a problem yet, I tell myself as I look at the bright blue sky. As I get up from my bed, I go to get dressed and get down for breakfast. Expecting Stephen to greet me with a big smile I go down the stairs yet there’s no one. It is dead quiet. Stephen? I shout. No answer. Maybe he is out and about, yet I do not see Arcus either around, I tell myself. Should I wait? Or should I find another place to eat? I ask myself. I should eat and leave him the money for the food and for the night after, I convince myself as my stomach feels like its chewing me out already. As I find myself some bread, some meats and a bit of cheese, another intrusive thought goes through my head asking if what I am doing is wrong. I take a kettle, add some water to it and start boiling it for a cup of tea. But at the same time another thought asks me if it is really wrong if I am paying for what I am consuming. I take my plate, set it on the table and sit in silence. As I sit, I can’t help but look at the light shinning through the window. I take a deep breath and start eating. A shadow appears before the window as the kettle starts whistling. As I raise my head, I see the Sheriff. This can’t be happening…

I have only finished writing the first draft of my first novel so I'm nowhere near considering the legal side of writing yet but I'm curious, so if you don't mind me asking I got two questions:
1) Do laws forbidding writers from reading fanfic of their work go over to other mediums, like visual novels for example? Or let's say I wrote a script and was lucky enough to get it produced as an animated short, would these laws still pertain to it? Or do stories outside the written medium have a completely different set of laws pertaining to them?
2) If an author writes a standalone and reads fanfic of said standalone, then goes on to write a series completely separate from their previous work with a different world and cast can the fanfic author still sue if they detect similarities? Even if their fanfic is attached to a completely different story?
Sorry if these questions are weird and rambly, it's 1 AM over here.
Let me clarify this. These aren't laws that I've been following: they're self-designed rules, based on the current legal realities obtaining in the markets where my IP is known and on offer.
Re 1): Written or not written—drawn, sung, or performed as interpretive dance for all I care—work created with consent in one's own universe must have come about with underlying binding written agreements in place. Without such agreements existing, viewing work in any format that's based in one's own universe will inevitably expose one legally. If I write a graphic novel and people write fanfic based on it, I will not read their fanfic because it could expose me legally to claims that further work done in my IP was based on their fic. Ditto if I write a script and it gets produced, and people see it and write fanfic about it, I won't read that fanfic either. The medium doesn't matter.
Re 2): If I write what for the time being is a standalone novel and read fanfic based on it, and then write a completely different series per your description, can a fanfic author still sue me if they detect similarities? Even if their fanfic is attached to a completely different story?
Well, if they've got the money, and depending on where they're located (for national laws differ), sure they can. The suit may well be sourced in confusion, or malice, or both, but they can. And the suit may in due time be lost or thrown out of court for being frivolous, but no matter how the cards fall, it's going to wind up costing you, the writer, a fair bit of money to get shut of it. A year's worth of your earnings? Two years' worth? Five? And what will be left of your career at that point?
The whole situation is better avoided by not reading any fanfic based on your work. In any format. Any time, any place. Period.
What's workable, and legal, and safe, is the following approach to derivative works from the IP owner's point of view.
Let's say that (for example) a producer or playwright approaches me and wants to adapt So You Want To Be A Wizard as a stage play. If that happens I have them get in touch with my agent, my agent proposes a license fee for allowing them to do this, and draws up a contract with that person essentially stating that they have my permission to adapt my book. Once that contract's in force (meaning it's been signed and money's changed hands), it's perfectly safe for me to look at those people's material written in my universe, because we're both bound by a concrete agreement on how the creative process will go forward and how the results will be used.
Or alternately: Let's say that some writers I know think it would be fun to write Young Wizards stories, and when I hear about this, I say "Okay, let's do a YW anthology." And I talk it over with my agent and then we call in a crowd of writers whose talents I trust and whom I think would be interested in taking part. Those interested all sign contracts with me that say they've got my permission to create those works using my IP / in my universe, and to get paid for them. My side of those contracts stipulates (as seems fair) that, if they invent something particularly cool while working in my universe, I retain the right to use and expand on that concept or language at a later date if I like. (If they have a problem with that, that's their call: they don't have to sign the contract or be in the anthology.) And I can obviously now read all this work and have it, legally speaking, be perfectly safe for me.
But let's try looking at the situation from a different direction. I open my ask box one morning and find that someone's stuffed the idea for a Young Wizards short story into it, also saying, "And I'd like to publish this as fanfic, if it's okay with you." Without an agreement in place, without my permission, this person has forced me to look at material which potentially infringes my copyright. But that doesn't matter in terms of my immediate legal options, because fanfic is also conditionally protected by copyright. (This is a complex situation, but this article deals with some of it, and links to more discussion.)
My first urge is to simply delete the thing and pretend I never saw it. But unfortunately Tumblr's records of my web accesses will now contain proof that someone logging into my account, from my computer (or iPad, or phone...) has opened and viewed that ask. Should I ever wind up in court with this person, their lawyers will have demanded that data from Tumblr and will use it to prove that I had access to their client's idea.
So now—assuming they've actually gone ahead and done this writing and publishing—I have to get hold of my lawyer and have them contact Tumblr and get that person's identity and contact info from them, so that they can be sent a cease-and-desist letter. I hate having to do this, but evidence that you have not been defending your copyright can be used against you.
Now let me be blunt. Like most writers, I'm not wealthy. And the simple business described in the paragraph above could cost me a month's income or more in billings from the lawyer. What am I supposed to eat, next month, while I'm trying to write? ...It's a good thing I like ramen.
...Though if I was wealthy, things could get much worse.
Let's say that in an access of utter pre-caffeine idiocy, and a weary desire to be nice to a clueless innocent, I just tell that person in the ask box, "Okay, fine, knock yourself out... just don't make money from it and don't do it where I'll see it." And they say "Of course, I'd never want to cause you trouble, your fiction has meant so much to me..." And then some kind of gloriously indescribable series of events occurs that somehow or other raises the Young Wizards series' profile way higher than it is at the moment, and makes its originator even a little bit rich and famous.*
youtube
...And a year or two or five later, in these increasingly litigious times, that person from the ask box who was so nice and said they'd never want to cause me trouble... suddenly starts having second thoughts. ...After all, I've got all this money now, and without their contribution, maybe it would never have happened, right? Don't they have a right to some of that? It's only fair!
You can just hear the thought processes, because we've seen this play out elsewhere before now. "Come on, she'll never miss it. She's probably got a castle in Ireland with solid gold toilets by now. She's got a TV series in the works, and when that comes out she'll have lots more money. She'll never miss a few thousand [ / few tens of thousands / few hundred thousand...] out of that!" And shortly they're on the phone to some lawyers, and the tabloids, and Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, with claims that the Young Wizards series in the works is based on their idea. In fact, they can prove I not only read it, I gave them permission to write in my universe!
...And suddenly Hulu/HBO/RandoStartupStreamingNetwork has stopped taking my agent's calls.
(sigh) So, as I said above: just don't read fanfic based in your own universe, mmkay? You'll thank me later.
*Without the universe's originator then suffering some kind of toxic ethical shift after the fact. (shrug) Stranger things have happened.

Kamala Khan’s bookshelves
Kamala’s room in The Marvels is an absolute treasure trove of little details to zoom in on, and I’ve identified so many books on her shelves!
Shelf 1, top to bottom:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Landmark Experiments in Twentieth Century Physics by George L. Trigg
College-level book about experiments that helped us learn about x-rays, lasers, isotopes, superconductors, and all kinds of other things I don’t understand. Meant to be more practical than theoretical since it talks about the actual methodologies of these experiments. Could be for school, or for Kamala and Bruno to run their own tests of Kamala’s powers. The first of many books in the Khan house that come from Dover Publications.
Tumblr media
2. Space Time Matter by Hermann Weyl
“An esoteric initiation into space time physics” -Amazon reviewer. I’m gonna be real, I don’t understand half the words in this book description, but apparently it’s famous for introducing gauge theory, which was later reborn as phase transformations in quantum theory. I can see this being something Kamala reads to try and understand the bangle transporting her to the Partition. Also from Dover.
Tumblr media
3. A Map to the Sun by Sloane Leong
A graphic novel about a high school girl’s basketball team learning to work together despite their many differences and conflicts. Also it has a gorgeous color palette. Seems fairly self explanatory why it’s in this movie. I’ll definitely be borrowing this from my library! Like my friend Kamala recommended a book to me herself.
Tumblr media
4. The Good Immigrant anthology edited by Nikesh Shukla
21 essays from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people in the UK about their experiences. It was crowdfunded initially, extremely critically acclaimed, and has gotten spinoffs and sequels. Riz Ahmed, who is British Pakistani, is one contributor, and a fun fact is that Rish Shah (Kamran from Ms. Marvel) worked with Riz Ahmed in an Oscar winning short called The Long Goodbye. Also, the editor, Nikesh Shukla, is currently writing the Spider-Man India comics series!
Tumblr media
5. Bright Lines by Tanwi Nandini Islam
A coming-of-age story about 3 young adults with complicated family, friend, and romantic relationships between them. They have to travel from Brooklyn to Bangladesh together one summer and thereby discover a lot about themselves. I haven’t read it, but there seems to be a ton of complex representation of LGBTQ, POC, immigrant, and Muslim characters. I wonder how much the three main characters can be compared with our three characters with complex relationships in The Marvels, and I wonder which character Kamala most relates to!
6. I can’t tell! The font is bugging the hell out of me because theoretically, with that amount of contrast, I should be able to read a word when I get two inches from the TV and mess with the settings. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
7. I also can’t tell, but I’m being easier on myself because the title is written in white on a yellow background. It’s not the only book I know off the top of my head with this color scheme (Yellowface by RF Kuang) because the title is definitely multiple words. Help!
Shelf 2, right to left:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. One Night that Changes Everything by Lauren Barnholdt
A YA romance where, through a convoluted series of events, a teenager must face all of her insecurities in one night. I can see Kamala devouring this as brain candy after wrestling with those advanced science books, or using it as fic inspiration!
2. Can’t tell, but love the color scheme!
This next one is a weird one, because I am 100% sure of what book it is, but I cannot find a picture of a matching edition.
3. Wizard at Large by Terry Brooks
It’s definitely, without a doubt, this book (where a character and a magical medallion are accidentally transported to Earth from another realm and switches places with an evil genie). Like those are the words on the spine and the plot of the book is an obvious choice for this movie. The fonts match on the audiobook, the ebook, and the next two books in the series. But try as I might, I cannot find any proof on the internet that the physical book that appears in Kamala’s room, that uses those two fonts and that spine formatting, exists. This is haunting me…
4. (On the other side of the box) It’s not The Twilight Saga Eclipse, but I definitely thought it was before I could watch in high definition. I think it’s a journal or sketchbook of Kamala’s; there are a bunch scattered throughout the room.
Shelf 3:
Tumblr media
I’ve only identified the bottom book, which is Einstein’s Theory of Relativity by Max Born (Dover Publications). The third one up is HAUNTING me, it looks SO identifiable and yet!
Living Room Side Table:
Tumblr media
1. Amateur Astronomer’s Handbook by JB Sidgwick (from Dover Publications)
2. Cosmology by Hermann Bondi (also Dover)
Both of these seem less difficult than the science books in Kamala’s room, but reviewers note that it helps to know calculus when reading Cosmology. Idk which member of the Khan family is reading these, but I love their family’s connection to the stars 💫
Tbh I’m having so much fun doing this! And I really wish we got to see Monica’s living space so I can analyze her books 😭

Wilbur Whateley is a nefarious character from Lovecraft's oft-times anthologized tale, THE DUNWICH HORROR. Wilbur is discribed by HPL as a rustic goatish giant. His father is essentially unknown, his mother is a simple-minded and uncouth albino woman. His grandfather is reputed to be a wizard of some sort. Eventually we discover that Wilbur has a 'twin brother' who is somehow invisible under normal circumstances. In the end Wilbur Whateley is torn apart by a vicious guard dog at the Arkham Mass. library. Our hero is trying to gain access to a copy of the dreaded Necronomicon. It's made fairly plain in the story that Wilbur intends - with his gigantic and even more deformed and non-human brother - to clear off the earth of all current life-forms! Well, lucky for humanity Wilbur dies from the dog attack and desolves into a puddle of white goo. His twin is sprayed with some kind of magic bug sprayer to become visible. After a group of stalwart human males call out a formula in Latin and make some sort of deal with unknown cosmic powers, a lightning bolt strikes Wilbur's nameless brother and blasts him to atoms! Yup, it's complicated. Anyway, Wilbur is the product of a monstrous joining between Lovecraft's somewhat nebulous cosmic entity Yog-Sothoth, and Wilbur's mother Lavinia Whateley. Might Lovecraft have been suggesting that other such joining of human and cosmic entities have happened in the past? Certainly such a phenomenon might explain hybrid creatures like the Great God Pan and his fellow goat/ people. Lovecraft was a great fan of the supernatural stories of Arthur Machen. Machen's tale THE GREAT GOD PAN explores a similar theme of a young girl joining sexually with the ancient Satyr god of Classical Mythology. As with his twin brother Wilbur is quite a bit less Pan- like once we are told of his looks with his clothes ripped off! As he often did in his other fictional excerises, Lovecraft takes a standard theme from established myth and occult lore and gives it a more horrifying and trans-gallactic and psuedo-scientific upgrade. Below is pictured a sculpture of Pan. Above it is an ink rendering of Wilbur Whateley dying by Tim Kirk. Wilbur had brought a handgun with him when he broke into the library at night. The gun failed to fire and the savage guard dog was able to triumph over the 9 foot Wilbur! Once again we see a mechanical device failing (Lovecraft disliked machines in general) Also included below is a photo of a contemporary advertisement decorating a bus stop in NYC. Of course the last photo is HPL himself. (Exhibit 383)

It’s a double book release day for me! Lofty Mountains and Being Ace are both hitting shelves today. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing these stories!
Lofty Mountains is an anthology of sapphic fantasy and sci fi set up in the air. My story is about a grumpy mountain woman and the sunshine harpy who falls to earth who she must nurse back to health. It’s got major hurt/comfort vibes, neurodiverse characters, and cozy fantasy gardening vibes. I think this story might be the most romantic thing I’ve ever written.
Being Ace is an anthology of asexual fiction across genres. My story is about a young woman whose family is suddenly elevated in status and must come out to society at a ball. Rather than invite a man to be her escort, her best friend, a non binary wizard who works in the kitchens, animates a suit of armor to be her escort. But the suit of armor is a vessel for all the patriarchal and compulsory allo/het expectations they want to escape. It’s full of platonic pining, pastries, and ballgowns. This story pulls on many threads from my own experience, and interrogates the idea of armor as a cage rather than a shield.
I hope you’ll give one or both of them a shot!

A little late, but... if anyone happens to have the time & interest to beta read(?) a few previously published WFTWR shorts sometime soon, please let me know :) I'm down to exchange w/ other writers!
Also, if you've already read some WFTWR and want to give feedback: I'm looking at #1, #3, and #5 !
More on the project -- three stories, 14k-ish words in total. What From the Water Rises, if you're unaware, is a collection of loosely interconnected shorts following the inhabitants of Isle Ezu, a volcanic island newly risen by the god of the sea. In these stories, that means: a young runaway prince and his guard; a wizard and the cultist she tries to befriend; and two ex-nobles who left their empire in a failed bid for power.
Desired feedback -- I'm literally just trying to pick 2 of 3 stories to submit to an anthology, so any kind of feedback is great; you can literally just rank them in order of preference & it'd still be helpful
Content warnings -- homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, drugging, fire, references to cults (though closer to the original[?] meaning of the term) - happy to elaborate on any of these :)
No need to reblog or anything! I'm way too late to do this in any formalized way, so just hmu if you want a link. Also, again, if you've already read them, feel free to let me know your thoughts lol

summary: In this anthology podcast, The Story Reaper, an otherworldly entity and their young apprentice visit individuals to acquire an untold story. This spooky yet family-friendly collection will take listeners all over the world as the duo listens to and collects the mysterious accounts of the strangers they seek out. This world is full of untold stories - frightful and profound, fantastical and honest: a mother’s brujería, an insatiable house, a cursed 90s reality game show, a cove housing ghosts of persecuted Indian girls, and a monstrous entity haunting a fishing town. These stories are waiting. And they must be collected.

summary: The stars are restless.
They twinkle in the night sky, shoving back and forth, trying to catch a glimpse. For all soft songs written of them, for all the kisses shared under them and childlike wonder directed at them, the stars care not for gentleness, nor kind words or deeds. No, when the stars crane their necks, it is to see things like this: a Hobbit, curled up on a path, sobbing, alone. He is covered in blood. It is not his own. He has a traveling companion, a tall wizard who slumbers. Even were the wizard not truly sleeping, Hobbits are such quiet creatures that he never would have noticed the state of his companion.
The stars watch as salty tears shed upon the ground, as dried blood is rewet; and perhaps that is something in itself, something a planet or a galaxy might call an omen, but for right now only the stars see as Bilbo Baggins, Hobbit of the Shire, mourns.
other tags: disabled characters handled lovingly, dances with canon, slight dubcon kissing, war violence, the process of grief

point horror is an aggregate horror series created in 1991 by scholastic inc, with novels written by authors r.l. stine,  lisa j. Smith, diane hoh, richie tankersley cusick, christopher pike, and caroline b. cooney. point horror is being made into a tv anthology series by hbo max (titled "point fear", possibly dead in the water w/ the restructuring of the service...). this post is about the locations and main plot points in the series. this post has mentions of suicide, drownings, and murder. please tread carefully. non-rp blogs do not interact with this post.
Tumblr media
nightmare hall (spinoff series, diane hoh) — not it's actual name, but what students at the university refer to it as. a girl was said to have hanged herself in the dorm of the main character. the actual dorm building is nightingale hall at salem university. there's a pizza place on campus and a mechanical wizard fortune teller machine that kids go wild asking questions of. the popular sorority is omega phi delta. tri gamma from twisted could also be a sorority at salem u, but they are different authors.
the country house (trick or treat, richie tankersley cusick) — located somewhere in illinois outside of chicago. there's a cemetery on the property.
manorwood (help wanted, richie tankersley cusick) — located in florida, manorwood is the stately home of the swanson family, and the site of another supposed suicide that was actually murder.
santa luisa (funhouse, diane hoh) — assumed to be in california, santa luisa is a small boardwalk beach town with an amusement park.
greenhaven (the invitation, diane hoh) — connecticut adjacent, this is a book where popular cass rockham's fall party is legendary in their small town, but invites mayhem and murder one unsuspecting year.
the lake (the accident, diane hoh) — the lake is where a young girl drowned and is now haunted by her ghost. main character megan gets possessed by the ghost for a while. the ghost (i think her name is jane?) uses mirrors to find people she wants to possess, so the ghost can pretty much go anywhere.
beverly island (the lifeguard, richie tankersley cusick) — deadly lifeguards make life a living hell for the tourists on beverly island. they should be saving people, right? not harming them? someone tell them that. seems to be modeled after a small fishing town in maine. beach house (r.l. stine) would likely take place in this same area, with a killer on the loose who never leaves any clue behind and disappears without a trace.
Tumblr media
there is a perfume line consisting of poison, venom, and obsession, sold at the store dry ice (a hot topic dupe) in the local mall. the perfume is pulled from shelves and the store disappears from existence after wreaking havoc on dove's life.
a character has the ability to freeze people she touches and uses this to get revenge on her friend for dating the boy she likes.
vampires exist in this series and are featured in the cheerleader and the vampire's promise spinoff series.

I am now rotating ur persona x infinity train AU in my head at mach speeds aaaaaaaa
please take this ask as an open invitation to talk about the AU as much as you want
OH MY GOSH THANK YOU!!! I have so many thoughts about this AU but some I consider "spoilers" so this will not be *everything* I've thought of.
Similar to Infinity Train proper, the structure of the story is an anthology up until The Plot Happens and the individuals we follow get stuck in one big group. While "Chapter 1's" protag is left unstated for now (though they're in a previous post of mine), "Chapter 2" follows Tulip and Futaba after an inciting incident than ends with both of them on the train.
Fun fact! This AU spawned from me wanting to have Tulip and Futaba interact. It evolved more and more as I thought about the Train and the Metaverse interacting and what could occur from that.
Tumblr media
Because putting the two gamers together will lead to absolutely no mischief >:]
The AU takes place after the events of Royal but, at least in part, during the events of Book 2. In fact, Jesse and Lake get a bit derailed on their trip through the train (pun intended).
Tumblr media
"If Mementos is so good, why isn't there a sequel?" said no one, ever.
Mementos is back! But what does it have to do with the train? And what's with the giant door?

A friendly denizen looking to explore the train
This is Unamed Grandfather Clock Owl, who I cannot decide a name for, but ends up accompanying Chapter 1's protagonist on their leg of the train journey. He's a wise and rather jovial denizen who wishes to see the rest of the train before "his old heart stops ticking." (Then again, he's almost 200 years young!)
I don't have a lot else to show or talk about that is non-reveal related. But I'm up for more asks if anyone would like specific details ;]
One last tibit for you: Tulip's codename is Wizard

This is definitely down to the wire (see recent posts about vengeful wizard curses) but if anyone happens to have the time and desire to beta read a couple previously published WFTWR short stories sometime in the next week, please let me know! I'd be super happy to beta something of yours in exchange.
If you happen to be keeping up with WFTWR already and want to leave feedback, that's great too - I'm looking at WFTWR #4 and #6, specifically!
More on the project: two stories, 8k-ish words in total. What From the Water Rises, if you're unaware, is a collection of loosely interconnected shorts following the inhabitants of Isle Ezu, a volcanic island newly risen by the god of the sea. In these stories, that means: a pirate captain trying to regain her footing after a night with her lover, and a young artificer trying to escape from what they believe is a warship belonging to the empire they betrayed.
Desired feedback: The goal is to submit these to an anthology, so I'm mostly concerned with basic comprehension (are any parts of the story confusing or unclear? do you follow the story despite the lack of world building context?) and impact (do you find these characters and their struggles compelling? What emotional beats do or don't land for you?) but I will happily accept whatever feedback you'd like to give!
Content warnings: lightning/thunder, storms at sea, shipwrecks, threat of drowning, attempted suicide, threat of torture, mentions of forced relocation, mentions/presence of firearms, mild hallucinations, chronic illness, transphobia, imperialism
I need to incorporate whatever feedback I get by the anthology deadline (Saturday, September 30) so if you're interested and able to get it to me by then hit me up and I'll send you a link to both stories ASAP!!

What I watched in January!!
January was a very positive month for movies that I watched mostly on tubi but I found a few dvds in my grandparents house that i had not watched yet. gonna be honest been battling being sick and cough medicine puts me to sleep very easily so i watched most of these while half asleep and most of them deserve a rewatch
The Blob (1988) 7/10
I know i am not alone in this opinion but the 90s version of The Blob is my favorite version.
Brain Damage 4/10
The parasite puppet monster is low budget but a very fun character and the way it attaches and injects it's victims is actually a really nice practical effect. now as for the plot it is the most unsubtle and dumb drugs bad police violence good plot but with an accidental pro suicide message. also has a weird amount of lore and backstory.
Pulse (2006) 6/10
western remake of an asian movie but the vibe kind of check out on this one. plus the original was not available.
The Barn 5/10
i am a chaotic person by nature but when it comes to horror movies and Halloween lore i enjoy the internal rules. the aesthetic and plot of this one don't cut it for me tho.
Wizards of The Lost Kingdom 3/10
don't let my low rating fool you this very well may be a must watch for the sword and sorcery genre.
this movie is a mish mash of extremely low budget childrens fantasy film, sfw clips from much more violent and sexual fantasy films, and one weirdly expensive looking insect woman monster that appears for 2 minutes for no reason
Bad Moon 6/10
bad moon is a very good werewolf movie I get how it might not have stuck the landing for a lot of people but it deserves a place on more top 10 werwolf movie lists
Witchery 5/10
like David Hasselhoff? Like foreign films? neutral on both how about a bunch of old crone style witches killing and torturing people in very thematic ways?
Black Roses 4/10
not going to lie when I start a horror movie and the Troma logo pops up it makes my fight or flight instinct kick in now.
the Void 8/10
Mirror Mirror 5/10
Reign of Fire 6/10
my silly child self avoided this film for some dumb reasons. anyway it is a pretty good movie my only criticism is the dragons needed way more screen time. but i understand the limitations and they probably would not have looked good if they stayed on screen much longer.
the Axiom 6/10
Tales of Terror 7/10
one of the best Edgar Allen Poe horror anthology films. Vincent Price and Peter Lorre always go well in Poe stories.
Nightbeast 5/10
as a child i remember watching a movie about an extremely violent and murderous creature with big teeth and maybe horns that i though was bigfoot or some other ape. i thought maybe it was this film but i am still unsure
Centipede! 5/10
I think one big centipede instead of many less big centipedes was an odd choice.
Attack the Block (2011) 7/10
this might be one of my favorite alien invasion movies. Like Gordon Ramsay and Julian Sands ( hope they find him safe btw) this movie is immune to being criticized for it's British nature
Memories (1995) 7/10
another step down the rabbit hole of beautifully animated anime anthology films that i think are by the same people that did Akira.
the stories were not as memorable as Robot Carnival but some of them were very good. can't wait to find more like this.
Jack Brooks Monster Slayer 6/10
this is a fun movie about not holding in your emotions until you explode and using your rage constructively. title could be misleading as it is in theory mostly backstory as he does not channel his rage into slaying monsters until the last 10 minutes or so.
Shakma 5/10
I almost always feel bad when an animal is hurt in a movie but I do actually really enjoy " man vs nature" genre of horror films. there is also a very strange and kind of roleplaying game going on for part of the movie.
the Client 6/10
2 young boys witness a suicide and some mafia secrets and one of them seeks out the protection of a lawyer, the lawyer is a woman with her own tragic backstory so they spend a lot of the movie shifting back and forth from bonding to fighting with each other while the mob and the crooked cops are after them.
not my usual type of movie but it was very compelling.
Ghost Ship 6/10
Necropolis 5/10
Nightwish 4/10
the Giant Claw 5/10
I just really enjoy the design of monster in this movie, i won't lie and say i was at all engaged by the plot but the dark matter force field around the monster was also a fun idea.
1408 5/10
the Phantom Empire 4/10
do you like dominant women in leather outfits? cave women? cave dwelling cannibals that look kind of like Morlocks from the time machine movies? great watch this movie.
now i will say this one is kind of boring and is mostly just walking and running around in a big cavern.
20 Million Miles to Earth 6/10
One of the few Ray Harryhausen movies I had not watched yet and I am very glad to be closer to watching them all
Beyond The Black Rainbow 5/10
the Monster 6/10
how dare this movie reflect some of my own unresolved emotional trauma. monster could have used a little more screen time subtlety is great but I like visuals.
Splinter 6/10
these parasite infected zombies have spikes and other nasty tricks a fun horror movie all around.

My Favorite Books of 2022
I think I did decently well at reading in 2022 and the book I'm reading now, I'm not anticipating finishing before the end of the year (it's The Stand by Stephen King), so now is the best time to post about my favorite books of the year.
This year, I read 80 books. 27 of those were the manga Blue Exorcist, and I'm never sure about whether to really count those in my book count, but I am going to count them as 1 big book for the purpose of this list! So, that takes me down to like 54 books.
So, let's go through my list each month, and pick out favorite book(s) from each month! Maybe I won't have a favorite from some months...
Bold means it was a good I really enjoyed! I
I'm going to hide the list under a keep reading line because otherwise this post might be too long for some people!

Babel - R.F. Kuang
Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories - Aviaq Johnston, et al
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
Hell Of A Book - Jason Mott
Picking an actual favorite from these is too hard. I read so many great books this year, and obviously some months I read better than others. Actually, I would probably bold more than I have, but I felt bad about bolding more than like 2 per month, though I did do that in like September.
There were only really like 5 or 6 that I didn't really like, but pushed my way through.
I'm quietly aiming for 100 books next year, but I'm not gonna force myself for that, because whenever I aim for goals like that, it just takes the fun out of reading, so I'm going to set my goal at like 5 books and anything more than that is going to be a win for me!

JACK - ANTHOLOGY OF A YOUNG WIZARD 17: Lost in Death and Misery
If he confessed to his crimes, then we have nothing else to do but to take him to Newgate, says the Sheriff. I have not confessed to anything! I won’t go! You can’t take me from this church! Thomas protests. We can, and we will, says the Sheriff. Not if father here will grant me sanctuary, says Thomas. Father? asks the Sheriff. Please, I will do anything to repent and please, please, please, Thomas begs. I have a bad feeling about this. Fine, says the Priest. Thomas starts laughing. I was not done. You have only a day. You must pray, fast and do a confessional. If you do not or will not. I will hand you over to the Sheriff, says the Priest. I will, I will, I will, says Thomas on his knees. Get me a watchman or two to stay guard for a day here. He must not leave this place, says the Sheriff. Now I really do have a bad feeling about all of this, I slip my tongue as the Sheriff gave the order. I almost forgot. Please send word to that mob of people to inform them of the reality of the situation, says the Sheriff. Thank you, I tell the Sheriff. How do you always find yourself in these situations? asks the Sheriff. I don’t know. I just wanted to eat some lunch and go get my stuff from the inn. I never expected any of this to happen, I explain. You need to stop hanging out with a cutpurse and find better people to be around, says the Sheriff. Please reference me to someone that is a better people, I respond.
You asked for me? asks a Watchman. Yes, there will be another one coming to change with you around morning. Or do you wish to come in tomorrow morning since you have worked already? asks the Sheriff. I would prefer it that way, yes, says the Watchman. Okay, good. That’s settled than, see you tomorrow around this time of the day, says the Sheriff. The watchman leaves. So, Wizard, I will have to think of someone. Next time we meet, I might recommend you someone. And assuming on your good luck, we might just meet very soon, says the Sheriff. Does that mean that I may leave? I ask. Yes. I assume you’ll be at Stephen’s inn, right? asks the Sheriff. Yes, that is where I will reside, at least for now, I explain as I take my leave. Good, I’ll know where to look for you, says the Sheriff. Let’s hope you won’t need to find me soon enough, I whisper as I close the door to the church. As I move down the street, I enter the intersection where the people were gathered previously. A coroner and a couple of watchman pick the body of the dead man up in order to load in in a carriage and take it away. As I make a left, leaving that horrid place behind, I start to ponder about everything that has happened until now. If there are lessons to be learned here, I do not really know what they are. I mostly feel a victim of fate. Imprisoned, shamed, death stitched tot he back of my eyes, and no mere break from horror, I speak to myself as I get lost.
I don’t know how I did not get lost until now. Everything looks almost the same as everything else, unless it’s a tavern, church or someone important with an imposing house. It all starts to feel like a maze. I can’t even see where the river flows through. Or maybe I am too far from the riverside? I ask as I aimlessly roam the streets trying to find my way towards Stephen’s Inn. I should have paid more attention to my surroundings instead of letting myself get way into my own head, I tell myself as more and more noise is made around me. I raise my head to look around. I see people leaving as they chat about their day and the sun sets. As I take a few more steps forward, a giant building graces itself in the last few rays of sunlight. The murmur of the people now gone, I am left alone in this little square of London looking at this building simply wondering what it is. I hear a man and a woman chat at the corner of the building. Cristina, let us spend the night together. I have lodgings for the night, I hear the man say. I could not. It is Sunday. I am still young. I do not want to go against my mother’s wishes and ruin this. So you either marry me or I am leaving, she says. Come on, dear. There’s no need for that, yet, says the man. Then we can’t spend the night, she says. Where do you think you are going? he asks. Home. Now let my arm be or I will make a hue, she says. You whore! You wench! You dare sleep with others, but not with me? he says. Let me be! she insists. I’ll let you rot in hell, says the man…
