South of Midnight, a third-person action adventure set in an original world of magic, monsters and giant, blues-playing skeletons. The game's debut trailer is a cinematic snippet introducing the protagonist, a young woman named Hazel, as she attempts to reason with an immortal specter on a dark dock. Hazel is hunting a monster — or, it's hunting her, as the trailer goes on to show — and she can wield bright threads of magic.

The pishacha are manifestations of evil itself, locked within a cursed amulet. The wearer of the amulet is at the mercy of the demon, known for possessing humans and feeding off their host's chakra energy. However, if symbiosis is achieved, the pishacha can grant its host a myriad of powerful abilities.

Indeed, it’s wrong to keep you near me / One could call me cruel and deceiving / But in your sacred air I am full of light / Your loving arms are the true delight / To which I’m lost / … / You’ve come to love / What you always will fear
- Persephone by Tamino
.
Here to deliver on the Blackice Hades/Persephone AU. It’s not exactly greek mythos, though - here, Pitch is considered a ‘god’ alongside North and the other Guardians, a cosmic lord of creation and existence. His domain includes all that is typically related to the ‘unknown,’ such as darkness, fear, and death. Jack is a cosmic being himself - a prince of the constellations, and their most prized one at that. After Pitch steals Jack away for himself, the constellations and other gods must strike a bargain with him, splitting Jack’s time between the starry skies and Pitch’s dark domain. Jack, however, begins to find a fondness for Pitch, despite the other stars warning him against it.

When will we move beyond eurocentric mythology and allow our Black mythology to take center stage?
What is the aversion to creating Black princesses with their very own story origins?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black girls can be princesses and mermaids. Black girls are princesses! Black girls are mermaids! What's a concern of mine (and for some others too) is that with everyone we've gotten so far, it's a replacement. The idea of "here, take this" kind of energy about it. Like it's a concession of already established stories and just sliding us in to say "look, we are diversifying our portfolio. we made (insert character) Black".
Now, the little Black girls who see Halle as Ariel definitely deserve this! Because they feel seen. This has nothing to do with the kids. Black children deserve to see themselves in these fantasies. And I'm joyous that they do and it's joyous to see them so happy and even emotional about it. Black and non-Black kids.
But as an adult, it's so noticeable to me now.
"Bailey’s casting in a role typically given to white actresses is a milestone whose long-term cultural impact could be seismic. But the news also presents an opportunity to have a larger conversation about colorblind casting in general, which — no matter how well-intentioned — can have adverse effects on the already-marginalized humanity, history, and creativity of historically underrepresented groups. The emphasis on colorblind casting over investment in original black characters and stories only assists in the continuous sidelining of significant creative expressions of black history and culture, which risk being entirely forgotten." ...."But if there is any genuine criticism to be leveled at Bailey’s casting, and ultimately colorblind casting in general, it’s that it risks sidelining and even erasing black history and culture, specifically black folklore and fairy tales. There’s a rich tradition to draw from, but Hollywood has mostly passed it over. Likewise, instead of a black James Bond, why not create a black action hero franchise of equal caliber? Or, better yet, adapt the work of black authors like Walter Mosley, who has an extensive library of detective novels, notably the Easy Rawlins series." ..."Instead of reimagining traditionally white heroes as black characters, stripping them of any cultural lineage and sociopolitical heft, the multi-billion-dollar industry could turn its attention to already-established black characters."
^^^In line of what we have with the franchises of Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, Get Christie Love, A Man Called Hawk. Why not continue these?
Makes me the think of Annie as well. The Wiz. (Carmen Jones I'll mention too).

Do these studios not want to invest in original stories for Black folklore and mythology? Or even allow new, original fairytale stories with Black princess to be created? If they absolutely wanted to keep a mermaid as the center of the story, there are folklores of African and Caribbean mermaids that they could've pulled from.
And it also doesn't have to be so diverse that it doesn't feel as authentic. The much adored 97's Cinderella and the equally adored Jingle Jangle both fashioned the diverse casting method for the main (Cinderella) and background characters (Jingle). Back then, I didn't even think twice about it but now as a grown up, it's very questionable. But as a child, it didn't matter and was normal. And that's what's important for Black children to see. I was a young kid and I know how affirming it was to see Brandy as Cinderella. I don't want to take that away from the little Black girls today. I was ecstatic just as they were when I was younger seeing Brandy and Whitney (and Whoopi) on my screen. And as a whole grownup seeing Tiana. And to add, Jingle Jangle did exactly what I'm saying here. A completely new, original story of a Black character in a fantasy! A young, little Black girl in make-believe!
Tumblr media
[Along with both the Broadway Dreamgirls and the film. Original stories of Black characters.]
It's not that a Danish mermaid can't be Black because there are Black Danish people. It's not that a German princess can't be Black because there are Black Germans. It's the fact that they aren't telling stories of original Black animated characters to stand alone.
I'm excited anytime Black actresses get an opportunity to play in these roles because of the representation they bring! But I also wonder why the lack of investment for Black original characters isn't the first idea.
As someone said, "...Black versions of white things..." isn't as progressive as we think.

Facts about Greek Myths?
There are a great many figures in Greek myth and they can be hard to keep track of, so here is a quick guide to which is which:
Ajax- Warrior who invented detergent.
Antigone- Funeral enthusiast who invented civil disobedience.
Atlas- First winner of the Olympic strong titan competition.
Bellerophon- Plot point in Mission Impossible 2.
Cerberus- 7 headed dog tragically born with only 3 heads.
Charon- Lead rower for Styx.
Cratus- God of strength, but not THAT god of strength.
Cyclops- Inventor of the monocle.
Daedalus- Inventor of the Labyrinth, and thus of David Bowie.
Dionysus- Drank 24/7 but very responsibly never drove.
Eris- Goddess of fighting with each other.
Eros- God of doing something else with each other.
Euronymous- God of Mayhem.
Fates- Least creatively named destiny gods ever.
Hera- Goddess of marriage yet only Zeus's third wife.
Hylia- Goddess of triangles and disjointed timelines.
Icarus- God of disappointing ones father.
Io- Space captain and epic 3D short film, still not on blu-ray.
Jocasta- Originator of Jo Mama jokes, mother of Oedipus.
Leda- Swan enthusiast and feathery-fandom originator.
Medea- Even worse mom than Jocasta.
Medusa- Inventor of reptile-safe shampoo.
Megaclite- LOL her name is "Megaclite." Pronounced like "Clitty."
Narcissus- Basically Trump.
Odysseus- Sailor who refused to ask for directions.
Orpheus- Inventor of impatiently checking the download bar.
Ouranos- Spelling that could've avoided a lot of planet butt jokes.
Pallas- Inventor of weird looking cats.
Persephone- Pomegranate fan, looked like Monica Bellucci.
Prometheus- Stupid fucking movie, especially for using some of H.R. Giger's original designs then putting them up next to a fucking plain white squid. Also let's make the space jockey a tall guy in a suit. How did Scott think that was a good idea? Fuck that shit and double fuck Covenant for somehow doing even fucking worse.
Rhode- Sea nymph yet not technically an island.
Siren- Inverse groupie.
Sisyphus- Limp Biscuit fan who never stopped rolling.
Tantalus- I'll tell you in a minute...
Thanatos- God of dying as easily as snapping your fingers.
Zeus- When the earth was still flat and the clouds made of fire, and mountains stretched up to the sky, sometimes higher- Folks roamed the earth like big rolling kegs. They had two sets of arms, they had two sets of legs. They had two faces peering out of one giant head so they could watch all around them as they talked and they read. And they never knew nothing of love. It was before the origin of love. There were three sexes then: One that looked like two men glued up back to back, called the children of the sun. Similar in shape and girth were the children of the earth. They looked like two girls rolled up in one. The children of the moon were like a fork shoved on a spoon, they were part sun, part earth- Part daughter, part son. Now the gods grew quite scared of our strength and defiance and Thor said, "I'm gonna kill them all with my hammer, like I killed the giants." And Zeus said, "No, you better let me use my lightening like scissors, like I cut the legs off the whales, and dinosaurs into lizards." Then he grabbed up some bolts and he let out a laugh, and said, "I'll split them right down the middle. Gonna cut them right up in half." And then storm clouds gathered above into great balls of fire, and fire shot down from the sky in bolts like shining blades of a knife and it ripped right through the flesh of the children of the sun and the moon and the earth. If you want the rest, see Hedwig and the Angry Inch cuz this is taking way longer to type than I expected.
