GALTx eNews: Join Us At The North Texas Irish Festival

It's time for one of our favorite annual events again and we can't wait to see you there. Get your green on and come see us at the 42nd annual North Texas Irish Festival! We are proud to show off our hounds and to give out free hound kisses to all takers!

Given the rich history of Greyhounds in Ireland, GALT will be one of only a few dog groups with a booth located in the Cultural area in Centennial Hall. Please stop by and visit us on Saturday, March 2, 10:30 to 5:00, and Sunday, March 3, 2024, 11:30 to 5:00. For event tickets and more information click here.

We still need volunteers from the clan Greyhound to help us make the most of our time at the festival, including ambassadog escorts who will bring their own well behaved adopted hound or foster hound to greet guests, Greyhound advocates to answer questions about the breed and adoption, and free hands to help set up or tear down our booth. Arrest made after Dallas Zoo events, including the theft of two tamarin monkeys:

Davion Irvin said he loves animals and that if he’s released from jail, he would steal more, the documents said.

Irvin, who remained jailed Tuesday on $25,000 bond, was arrested last week after asking questions at a downtown Dallas aquarium about animals there. He is charged with six counts of animal cruelty and two counts of burglary.

Zoo staff say the monkeys have lost weight but are unharmed.

Irvin told police that on the night of Jan. 29, he waited until dark, jumped a fence to get onto zoo grounds, cut the metal mesh of an enclosure and took the two emperor tamarin monkeys, according to arrest warrant affidavits . He then got on the city’s light rail before walking to the vacant home where he said he kept his animals.

Irvin has been charged in two of the odd events over a span of several weeks at the zoo and is linked to another, police said. In the taking of the monkeys, Irvin faces one count of burglary and six counts of animal cruelty — three for each monkey. He also faces a burglary charge in relation to the escape of a clouded leopard named Nova, who was discovered missing Jan. 13. A cut was found in her enclosure, and the zoo closed as a search was launched. She was found later that day near her habitat.

Irvin told investigators that he’d wanted to take Nova but that he was only able to pet her before she got on top of her enclosure, an affidavit said.

Police said have said they are still investigating, but Irvin has not been linked to the suspicious death of an endangered vulture at the zoo in January.

Meanwhile police in Louisiana announced the arrest Tuesday of a 61-year-old man in the case of 12 squirrel monkeys that were discovered missing Jan. 29 from their enclosure at Zoosiana in Broussard, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) west of Baton Rouge.

Police said the missing monkeys haven’t yet been found.

dallas held your hand tightly as you two walked out of the dingo. the both of you walked out with some sort of smile on your face—yours more obvious than his.

as you two walked towards god knows where, dallas just talked and talked about his day. when he woke up, what woke him up, how good the cigarette he smoked was. anything.

you realized that his grip on your hand loosened. it made you a little confused, but you didn’t want to make it seem like he has to hold your hand.

“you can let go, y’know.”

“hm?”

he hummed, cocking an eyebrow before looking down at your hands clasped together. dally waved you off, chuckling.

“nah, nah. i like how your hand looks in mine, doll.”

hey babe! can i get winter nights w dallas and decorating the christmas tree (at night duh!) 💞

big hands hold your waist to balance you on the step-stool as you put an ornament high up on the tree. the tree was covered in brightly coloured lights and ornaments, tacky, the way it always was in the curtis house. the fireplace and lamp was the only protection from the darkness outside. it was snowing, soft flakes of ice coating the front yard. as you place the ornament on the tree, you fumble on the stool ever so slightly, and the hands tighten on your waist to steady you.

“careful, sweetie,” dallas’s voice murmurs, voice hushed as to not wake up the rest of the gang, who were all sleeping over.

“i wouldn’t even have to be doing this if you’d be kind enough to do it for me,” you huff, and that earns you a quick squeeze on your waist, his way of telling you to be quiet.

dallas was like the grinch - he didn’t like christmas. he was just a pessimist, looked at all the negatives of the holidays, like buying expensive gifts for everyone and writing meaningful messages on cards. he thought it was stupid. so it was no surprise when he refused to help you decorate the christmas tree as a surprise for the boys. the most he’d help would be making sure you don’t hurt yourself or make the tree look bad.

he rolls his eyes. “you know i’m not gonna do that.”

“then just go to sleep, dal,” you’ve said this to him many times tonight, but he won’t budge. “i don’t see why you’re out here still if you’re hating every second of this.”

“not hating it,” he disagrees. “i’m hangin’ out with you.”

his words cause your mouth to form a slight smile, you love when he says stuff like that. he barely ever compliments you or expresses that he does still like you, so those small words pledge a greater meaning for you.

he gives you a small kiss on your neck, and passes you another ornament to hang up. in silence, you continue to silently decorate the tree in the darkness, the air between you filled with a gentle warmth. dallas always says the right things to make you melt, unlike the snow still falling gently outside.

GALTx eNews: We Are Turning 23!

Twenty-three years ago, a small group of dedicated Greyhound enthusiasts got together at Stoneleigh P in Dallas and Greyhound Adoption League of Texas was born! Please join us to celebrate our birthday and the 4,000 hounds we have helped find forever homes over the years! We will be at the Conner Pavilion at Lake Park (600 Sandy Beach Road, Lewisville, Texas, 75057) on April 28, 2024, from 11:00 to 2:00.

Admission is only $10 per person and children under ten get in free. The state park also charges a $10 per car parking fee. Our birthday party entertainment includes:

Greyhound nail trims for $10, first come, first served;

Reiki by Suzanne Burke, ten minute sessions by appointment for $10;

Animal communicator;

Hound contests;

Vendor shopping, including LePope Designs, Sandy Bohannon, Beth Rodney, and GreytStore staples;

Volunteer recognition;

Caricature paintings of your hounds by Mary Beth Gibson, $35 for one hound or $50 for two hounds in the same painting;

No mess paintings by your hound for $10;

Raffles, $5.00 for 3 tickets (not available via PayPal); and

and a live auction!

With the purchase of a $10 cup, beer is free. We'll provide hummus for humans and cake for the hounds. You can bring your own picnic lunch or pre-order lunch from Mezes and More starting at $10 per person. Admission tickets are available in advance on our website or at the door, but you need to pre-order lunch by noon on Saturday, April 27, 2024. When you order your admission tickets, please also order your beer cups, reiki sessions, nail trims, paintings, and other extras.

dallas winston had never set foot inside a bookstore — that is unless you count the one time in new york before he was arrested. at that time though, he was brought along by these guys he would hang around in the subway. he watched as they pulled a gun on the old lady running the shop, the woman cowering as she handed them the money.

dallas thought about that often, he wasn't sure why they decided it had to be a bookstore of all places — did they even make money worth taking?

he hadn't exactly planned to go into that kind of store ever again, he wasn't the kind of guy that enjoyed literature of any kind and he couldn't be caught in a place like that; it would ruin his reputation. on one particular day though, he found himself being dragged to 'the book garden' — ponyboy's favourite store.

unfortunately for dallas, today he was tasked with accompanying johnny and pony as everyone else was busy. it's not that he didn't like them, because he did, he'd just rather spend his saturday doing anything else.

the three of them walked into the store where you just so happened to be working today. you glanced up at the ring of the bell when the door opened, seeing the trio of greasers. you gave a small smile to ponyboy, recognising him as he was a frequent customer. johnny you knew from school when he came and dallas — well, everyone knew dallas — but you didn't know him.

you kept yourself busy where you were, stocking the shelf with new additions. there were lots of interesting copies in there of old fairytales, you picked up a stack of seven rather thick books and walked slowly towards the fantasy section.

you could barely see over the stack but you knew your way around the store well so you felt confident enough to walk through blind. you did feel confident walking through blind, at least, that was until somebody bumped into you and made you and your stack of books fall to the floor.

you frowned, wincing as your knees came into contact with the hard wood.

you started gathering your books hurriedly, hearing a huff from above you. "you should watch where you're goin', huh? people are tryin' to walk here."

you swallowed hard and got up, balancing the pile of books in your arms once again and coming face-to-face with dallas winston.

"i'm— i'm sorry..." you sputtered out in apology, feeling embarrassment creep its way into your gut. you really should've known something like this had to happen at some point — you just didn't expect it to be dallas in particular.

the roughed up teen chewed the inside of his cheek, his eyes noticeably looking you up and down as if examing you before he looked away for a moment. he licked his teeth in a smile as he turned back to you.

"so— so what are you? uh, a— a librarian?" he asked with a little chuckle. "kinda cute."

you blinked slowly, his words catching up with you. "no... librarians work in libraries," you told him as you chewed your lip, "hence the name."

dallas tilted his head to the side and back into place in a shrug, letting out a low hum in acknowledgement. he wasn't the brightest, okay? how was he supposed to know that?

"you work here then?" he asked, despite it being obvious due to your attire and the fact you were cleary putting new stock away.

"mhm, yeah," you told him as you slid the books you were holding into their correct places on the shelf. "been working here for two years or so."

dallas nodded and sucked his cheeks in, rolling his eyes as ponyboy called him over to the exit.

"well," dallas leant down slightly as he got closer to your face, "i s'pose you might be seein' be around here more often," he claimed with a wonky grin.

"what?" you questioned with a furrowed brow, "you like reading?"

"no," dallas shook his head, "i seem to be growing quite fond of you though, darlin'."

you were flattered despite the fact that this was your first proper meeting — you understand why so many girls from your school would talk about him now. you were definitely falling for his charm, that's for sure.

"o— okay... bye," you told him quickly before hurrying back over to the staff room and closing the door. you leant against the wall and cupped your face in your hands, letting out a little screech of embarrassment and gently smacking yourself.

dallas winston had never set foot in a bookstore — and now he would make sure he did at least weekly.
