happy spring. i'm having some evan rosier thoughts
luna gets her spacey, faraway quality from evan. she has a lightness that he didn't (something in his manner is unavoidably Brutal) but her unearthliness feels like his. i like evan as smart but utterly indifferent to school— he pulls terrible grades without blinking twice, because his mind is on his experiments. he seems a poor, inattentive, forgettable student in hand-me-down clothes. he is utterly unremarkable unless you know him, in which case his blandness suddenly becomes frightening
evan wouldn't dissect barty!! his entire life is measured in his careful (symbolic but also often literal) possession, understanding, & vivisection of that which interests him. he grew up with butterflies pinned to his walls and salamanders gutted under his cutting spells. barty fascinates him because he is the one thing that evan cannot understand or control— barty is such a walking contradiction he seems impossible. that is the seat of evan's longing and he would find it crude and profane to reduce that complicated tangle to flesh. evan wouldn't vivisect barty but he would probably instruct barty through vivisecting him.

As much as I love Tommy calling Buck 'Evan', it also kind of feels like an omen.
(Bear with me a little, the buck/evan distinctions get a bit uhh).
Canon reasoning aside, as symbolism, it's clear-cut. Evan is the man Buck used to be, the kid he used to be, and with this piece of himself finally falling into place, there's some healing to be had for that past version of Buck as well. It's the start of a journey, and Buck can't make it if Evan doesn't as well.
And I've seen Buck referred to as a mask, a protection of Evan, but I think he's the man Evan evolved into. He got the nickname in the fire academy and never looked back, and there's something obvious about the way he stopped being Evan just as he became a firefighter and found his place with the 118. (Buck 1.0 was a mask, at least in part, but that's another story.)
For years, he has been Buck. Maddie is the only one who knew him when he was Evan, and she does call him by his name sometimes. There's also Eddie's infamous listen-to-me-goddamnit line. But that line during the will reveal works because 'Evan' is so jarring, not just to the viewers, but to Buck himself too. Even in s6, Chimney calls him Evan in front of the Buckley parents, and Buck is in the background looking confused as hell. It's not his name anymore, not really.
And I guess what I'm trying to say with all this is that Tommy calling him Evan (while cute) feels like it sets up the relationship to end. Because Evan doesn't really exist anymore; he's a part of Buck, certainly. All of us carry our past selves around, we're never really free of the people we used to be. But Buck grew beyond Evan, he grew up a bit and found his place in the world.
He's back to being Evan now that he's finding his footing with this new facet of himself. But in everything else he's still Buck. And I'm not sure it's insignificant.

You know what? Buck also deserves to experience what a good, loving reciprocal relationship looks like and feels like. I'm Buddie endgame, always, but I want them both to be READY damnit, and Buck’s track record up to now has been him bending himself out of shape to be whatever he thinks his partner needs. And the way they are writing Tommy? Like, he's grown so damn much from his Chimney/Hen begins days. He knows HIMSELF, he ACCEPTS himself and he doesn’t need Evan (love love love that he calls Buck Evan BTW!) to be anything but a baby bi. He knows the job, so he's not running, as far as we know he doesn’t need emotional support, he has his career and they are COMPATIBLE, and he's already seen Buck at his worst, most petty and he KISSED HIM ABOUT IT!!!!! and also I will die on this hill, nobody try sway me, he knows he himself is not Buck’s forever and he's absolutely cool with that. So Buck can have a nice, just NICE AND EASY relationship, figure out what he likes in a partner, how to solve conflicts like an adult, experience being appreciated for EXACTLY WHO HE IS - and when the time is right, be exactly the kind of partner and father he WANTS to be for his forever FAMILY

I actually do tend to put most of the Order we see in the photos around the same years, but my headcanon is that there were other older members but they all died by the time that photo was taken because they were trying to protect the younger kids. I like to imagine that Moody is the only surviving older Order member and he had to watch his peers die one by one and then had to watch as so many of those kids they died trying to protect were killed themselves
Soooo. I can see this working if well justified. There is a line that does justify it in canon, actually- "[...] look, I can’t promise no one’s going to get hurt, nobody can promise that, but we’re much better off than we were last time, you weren’t in the Order then, you don’t understand, last time we were outnumbered twenty to one by the Death Eaters and they were picking us off one by one...”
Voldemort would most likely send his Death Eaters after the best and strongest Order members first, even though they were more likely to take down many of his followers- it's not like he didn't have the numbers. BUT I'm afraid it's a little unrealistic. The weakest fighters in a fight to the death are those who get killed first even with protection.
Just for funsies, though, I'll give you my personal headcanon of the Order members' rough ages. I'm usually flexible if they're changed by a couple of years, but the generations should be kept.
This is the list of confirmed Order of the Phoenix members in the First Wizarding War:
Albus Dumbledore
Aberforth Dumbledore
Alastor Moody
Arabella Figg
Dedalus Diggle
Elphias Doge
Emmeline Vance
Mundungus Fletcher
Rubeus Hagrid
Sturgis Podmore
Severus Snape
Sirius Black
Remus Lupin
Peter Pettigrew (who turns spy for the Death Eaters in 1980)
All these people survive the war. Then we also have:
James Potter
Lily Evans Potter
Fabian Prewett
Gideon Prewett
Frank Longbottom
Alice Longbottom
Edgar Bones
Benji Fenwick
Caradoc Dearborn
Dorcas Meadowes
Marlene McKinnon
Now. The only girl confirmed to be one of Lily's classmates is Mary McDonald and she's not part of the Order (and I choose to believe that she wasn't; she sympathised, maybe, but I like the headcanon that she's so scarred by Mulciber and Avery's bullying - and that the event that Lily references to Severus is not the only time they use Dark Magic on her - that she wants nothing to do with the fight). I am maybe one of the two (2) people with a mild appreciation for BlackKinnon, and I don't mind Marlene as someone in the same age bracket as them (but I can also see her being older). She is murdered along her entire family, though, and it's unclear whether she was a mother, a sister, or a daughter. I will say that some of their Hogwarts years overlapped.
Dorcas I find way less likely. She was killed by Voldemort himself - the man wouldn't have bothered if she wasn't an Amelia Bones-level witch at least, which means she was mighty, which means she most likely wasn't twenty-one. I like to think that she was an Auror, or a Ministry high-ranking employee with sound principles that just would not bend to the infiltration of the DEs in the Ministry or to Barty Crouch Snr's ruthlessness.
Frank and Alice Longbottom are the same, to me. They're older than the Marauders, I would make them (just like Dorcas) around Bellatrix's age, maybe even older. That makes them around 30yrs old in 1981. Which means they would have had a full decade or more to become the most respected Aurors in the Wizarding World, so well known that what happened to them sparked major outrage, the kind that led to a manhunt for their torturers, and the sentencing of a pleading nineteen-year-old boy. (Of course, Barty jr was guilty, but they didn't know that, didn't know just how loyal to Voldemort he truly was. The Lestranges sentencing - an old wizarding family, a Lestrange had even been Minister for Magic - was clearly one sparked by public outrage. People were crying out for their blood.)
The Prewetts were Molly's older brothers, so they were way older than the Marauders. They were also killed by a group of Death Eaters led by Antonin Dolohov after what appears to have been a truly brutal fight, so nope. They weren't the Fred and George types of the Marauders Era (also. the Marauders were that!)
Edgar Bones had a wife and children and was considered to be one of the best of the era, so I doubt he was as young as the Fantastic Four. We really don't know enough about Caradoc Dearborn or Benji Fenwick to say, but I somehow doubt it.
Of those who survived.
We know that Albus, Aberforth, Moody, Elphias Doge, Mundungus, and Arabella Figg are all way older than the Marauders, and I've always pictured Dedalus Diggle as a middle aged man (but we only know he's tiny and excitable, so it could go either way). Sturgis Podmore's description fits someone that could have been in the Marauder's year or maybe slightly older, but still one of their peers.
So, really, the green-faced youths that fought with the Order were: the four Marauders, Lily, maybe Marlene and Emmeline Vance (who isn't even listed as fighting with them in the First War, only the second), and maybe Sturgis Podmore. On the side of the Death Eaters: Avery, Mulciber, Barty Crouch jr (who was two/three years younger than the Marauders!!!), Regulus Black and of course Severus Snape.
And, no. Evan Rosier's age is never disclosed, and since he brutally maims fucking Alastor Moody - possibly the greatest Auror ever - I'm inclined to believe that he was at least Bellatrix's age (so 8-9 years older than the Marauders). In my personal headcanon he's even a tad older - but no less cuntier for it. My boy serves as much cunt at 27 as he did at 17 (<3).

Okay I just wrote and essay on soap operas and while doing this is read Glen Creeber’s ‘serial television’ where he discussed the hybridisation of the soap opera and its characteristic of the ‘flexi- narrative’ and I want to talk about how this applies to 911 on ABC especially with the season 6 ending and the season 8 renewal 3 episodes into its new season.
Disclaimer: I don’t want to write a whole essay on this and i dont fully have an idea where im going with this. this is just me rambling.
Firstly Creeber defines the soap opera as: A continuous, never-ending drama series usually set around the domestic and intimate lives of a small community that explicitly resists narrative closure.
The 'flexi-narrative' is the characteristic of soap operas where there are multiple narratives running separately and with different tones. not all of these narratives will reach a complete conclusion, some trailing off and some left open for further exploration. This creates a sense of realism as real life continues on and doesnt have a conclusion.
Additionally, Christine Geraghty explains that realism in soaps is also built by the way that the narrative continues without the viewer creating the sense that they live a day to day life beyon what the viewer can observe.
A quick explanation of hybridisation is that elements such as the flexinarrative and the focus on close interpersonal relationships rather than larger overarching plotlines and politics. Within the text that I'm referring to there is a discussion of how shows based on work places become less about the jobs and more about these relationships.
John Wilsher (who is quoted in this book) states that essentially all drama is becoming a soap opera with these more personal stories, this is stated like a negative by him but I personally find these narrative more interesting as they become more psychological and allow for a discussion of more personal topics and political implications.
But basically what is being said is the drama now is a sort of hybrid with soap operas and has adapted to include the flexi-narrative and a focus on more personal narrastives.
This is where my thoughts come to 911 and its move to ABC. The previous season of 911's ending was created with the knowledge that the show would most likely be cancelled (i don't know at what point the writers where aware of this but i think it can be assumed that the season didn't start with this confirmed and/or known) this meant that everything had to be wrapped up, every story line must come to a form of conclusion. I think it can be easily said that most viewers and fans found the conclusion as unsatisfying due to the choices made by writers. However, I think to an extent no conclusion would be satisfying as 911 is a show that benefits and thrives on the flexi-narrative. In a sense it is a hybrid of the soap opera similar to most modern procedurals and within this is the expectation that it will feature continuous plot lines and refer back to its past stories. This can be seen in the various 'Buck' iterations, the acknowledgement of Buck's character progression. A large part of 911 is the personal development of characters like Buck but also Bobby and his alcoholism, Hen's family and its occasional issues and celebrations, Chim and his journey with relationships and Maddie with overcoming abuse and developing a healthy family. Any final conclusion to 911 will feel unsatisfying as the show has built on the sense of realism, these characters have been shown to experience life beyond the plot and to write it to a close feels unnatural.
I also believe the way they chose to conclude specifically Bucks story did feel rush, if anything if they didn't have time to give him a fully developed love interest then they should have returned to a previous iteration of the couch metaphor and had him happy single or continue looking for love with a healthier mind set. To give him a concrete close without the time to set up a fulfilling future feels odd even if you have no investment in Buddie or if you did have investment in his relationship with Natalia. The narrative structure of 911 creates the pattern that there is no happy ending, they just continued development. The ending of season 6 didn't create a sense that Buck will develop more, his new relationship felt almost closed. I think a comparison to this is Eddie's ending which did feel like a closing but instead like a slightly new beginning (I don't personally like Marisol but this isnt about opinions of the love interest but instead how she is introduced) as it was an opening to Eddie developing past... well his past.
Anyway this is all to say that the renewal of 911 after 3 episodes of season 7 does sit well with this comparison to soap operas in terms of its benefits. 911 works better when the writers can write these flexi-narratives that are continuous and could last not just for a season but beyond that. I think that's sort of where 911 has suffered as it sometimes tries to close narratives that don't require closure or are ended too early. Such as the Buckley parents, that's a narrative that could have been taken through multiple seasons and even with forgiveness it could be something that could be further discussed. But season 8 being renewed allows the writers the safety to write continuous stories that don't need to be concluded by the end of the season. I think in general 911 thrives when it doesn't try to close things and instead continues on. A wedding isn't the ending of the dating era but a new beginning, a death isn't the end but a way to explore its ramifications, etc.
This was all just me rambling bc i had to read a bunch of stuff for uni and 911 was on my brain but ultimately what i want to get at is procedural shows such as 911 benefit more from being treated as soap operas or at least using the characteristics they have inherited to its advantage and if they are given the freedom to create long running and never ending personal narratives they can develop a more satisfying story.
This all made more sense in my head sorry

Talking Buddie Language: Ep 6.01
Episode 6.01 gave us so many wonderful Buck and Eddie moments. There is so much to analyze that my mind was working overtime trying to distinguish everything and what that all means for them.
Firefighter's Buckley and Diaz & their partnership:
We finally get Eddie back as a full fledged firefighter but only get a tiny moment of him and Buck acting like partners. Buck is paired off with Hen, while Eddie is paired off with Chim to go save the two captains. Now I think it was brilliant to show Eddie being the one to do the big save since this is the first time we see him back as a firefighter. They wanted to show us that he is back and better than ever.
I did appreciate Bobby sending Buck up to help Eddie. He knows they work best when they're working together. That comes from years of seamless partnership and just knowing the other like they were an extension of their self. Buck runs up because he will always be there to have Eddie's back. His cute worried face let us know that he was of course worried about Eddie's wellbeing but was going to do everything in his power to make sure Eddie and the other captain got out of the blimp safely. His soft, “Eddie Hey” alerting Eddie that he’s there and he’s got his back was so perfectly them. They don’t need to talk to do their jobs. They’re in each other’s head. But it was great to see that little soft interaction between them. It's interesting to me that we didn't get any other moment of them two afterwards to discuss any emotions they were feeling during those tense few minutes.
The Interim Captain Debacle:
I loved this scene very much. Eddie is being sassy whilst speaking to Lucy, which indicates that there's still a lack of closeness between the two. His voice did not sound genuine enough when he asked her how she broke her foot off duty.
The parallel between this scene and the one from 3.01 is amazing in how they're different. In 3.01, Bobby is telling the team that Buck isn't getting out of bed and that he's not taking this whole unemployed thing well. Eddie's initial reaction is, "He's just sulking Cap, he'll get over it...Look I know it sucks, but that's life right? Whenever stuff didn't work out for me, my dad always told me to brush it off, keep moving forward." They then discuss how Buck has them, the team, because they're his family and that's the thing that makes Eddie realize he has to check in on his partner. Because until Bobby said that, Eddie wasn't taking Buck's duress seriously due to the way he was raised. He didn't realize it himself that he may need to check in with his friend and see if he needs some kind of support.
Tumblr media
The difference with this scene in 6.01 is that Eddie notices something is wrong with Buck almost immediately. He immediately looks up from what he's doing because the tone of Buck's voice is enough to make him realize that this may be a deeper issue for Buck. You can tell by the raise of his brow and the way he doesn't take his eyes off Buck. I did a mini analysis of this scene already, so I will just link it here so I am not repeating myself. My entire point is that Eddie has let go of the toxic bullshit his father instilled in him and he's allowed himself to be more in tune with Buck. He doesn't need Bobby or anyone else to tell him something is bothering Buck, he knows it before anyone else. That is massive development for not only Eddie, but his relationship with Buck.

The Buckley-Diaz domestic Family Dinner:
There’s so much to unpack here. First and foremost this is the first Buckley-Diaz family scene we have gotten in such a long time. The last time we saw these three together was in 5.14 and it was during the equine therapy scene. And the last time we saw them having a family dinner, it wasn't just them three because Taylor was also present.
Before anything, I just want to focus on Eddie’s reaction to Buck dismissing Lucy by saying, “She’s whatever you know she’s great. But she’s out.” The man looked up from what he was doing to give Buck the fondest heart eyes ever. He kind of looked at Buck almost as if to say, “Stop talking about other women when I’m sitting in front of you with our child.” It was the second heart eyes we got from him this episode and it was so beautiful to see how Eddie doesn’t even try to hide them at all.
I will say however, that way he raises his right brow and kinda sighs to himself really indicates minor jealousy/hurt over simply hearing her name. It’s almost as if he’s thinking, “Not this again”, which is common when someone is pining for the other person. Which can be the case here. But it’s not something too important for him to dwell on it for long. He just can’t help his reaction to hearing about Buck speak about someone else, especially given he has had some sort of history with that person.
Tumblr media

Buck and Eddie, to me at least, were having two different conversations simultaneously while at Buck’s loft. I think it’s so important that Eddie is sat facing towards Buck during this entire exchange. He’s facing him head on and letting him know he can tell him anything he wants.
B: “So it doesn’t bother you that Bobby didn’t even consider either one of us for interim captain?”
E: “Not really. Just got back to the 118. But clearly it’s bothering you.”
This is very important because this is Eddie taking that leap and bringing up something that is bothering Buck more than he is letting on. It is his way of showing that he is in a better mental health space now and that he is so in tune to Buck’s own emotions. He is confident enough to broach this topic with Buck first and have a normal conversation on what is bothering him. He isn’t letting Buck just sulk until the gets over it. He is breaching the door and allowing Buck to confide in him, without judgement. Also it’s important to note his tone of voice because it’s soft and he doesn’t have all his usual sass underlying his words. He does tend to tease Buck often but right now he is letting Buck know is not one of those times. It is also interesting to note how this conversation, Eddie bringing up that something is bothering Buck is very much something that goes on between couples. It is how longterm partners/spouses approach their significant other to let them know, “Hey, I see you, I know you, you can trust me. I’m here whenever you are ready to unburden your problems.”
B: “When he has so many other excellent options right under his nose.”
E: “Like you.”
Now see Eddie isn’t asking this. Eddie is simply stating that he knows what is on Buck’s mind because he knows him. Knows that this is the root of his problem.
B: “It’s like he’s choosing not to see them & everything they have to offer.”
E: “Time.”
Eddie doesn't respond to Buck’s remark then. He busies himself with Christopher to gather his thoughts. Because Buck seems to not only be talking about Bobby choosing someone else to be interim captain. This is where I believe the two simultaneous conversations begin.
I find it very interesting that Eddie is the one who shifts the conversation into another direction. Sure they can still be talking about the interim captaincy. But he asks Buck plain and simple, “What are you offering?” The way he tilts his head to the left and looks up at him indicates that he genuinely wants to know the answer to that question. Now see, I don’t believe for one moment he wants to know the answer solely for why Buck thinks he should be interim captain. I think this is Eddie’s way of asking in general what Buck is offering to other’s around him, possibly even Eddie himself.
Tumblr media
(Gif by @whattarush)
Buck chooses that moment to offer Eddie and Christopher lasagna, which happens to be Bobby’s famous lasagna. Again, the saying about the way to a man’s heart is through the stomach is very prevalent here and it parallels Eddie cooking dinner for Buck in 5.11.
Eddie’s body language throughout their entire exchange is very open. When he asks what Buck is offering, he spread his arms wide open in a welcoming stance. He’s welcoming whatever Buck’s response is going to be because he’s already welcomed Buck into his life fully. There’s nothing closed about him in thet moment. On the contrary, it’s almost as if Eddie is also giving himself up to Buck by the way he’s spread his arms and offered himself for the taking.
Eddie’s immediate response is to look proud and fond, and respond with, “It does look good.” That is basically Eddie’s way of saying, “I see you, I see what you bring to the table, and I love it. I want what you're offering.”
Buck emphasizing that it took him 3 tries to perfect what he offered Eddie and Christopher is very interesting because he has had 3 previous failed relationships. It took him 3 tries to perfect this dinner for his boys. He is offering not only his lasagna, but himself after these 3 failed relationships, in the hope that he is enough for them. You guys see how Buck and Eddie seem to be dancing around one another with their words?
The Buddie Couch Debacle:
The couch metaphor has me in the tightest chokehold. I remember I answered an ask last season about the symbolism of Taylor’s and Eddie’s couch and what that means to Buck. I unfortunately cannot locate the ask so just bare with me please.
B: “My last two couches came with girlfriends.”
E: “I think you mean your last two girlfriends came with couches.”
The way Eddie says that in a confident but sassy way makes me laugh. Because he’s very well aware of Buck’s previous girlfriends and the baggage (couch) they brought into Buck’s life. What’s interesting is Buck’s eye squint in response. Because he’s looking at Eddie as if to ask him, with their seamless nonverbal communication, what he’s getting at?
E: “Taylor moved out 4 months ago.”
He’s emphasizing that she’s been gone for months and Buck still hasn’t “moved on”. Moved on in the sense that he wasn’t out actively looking for another couch/girlfriend. These two words are being used in place of each other. They’re using couches as a metaphor for his previous girlfriends/relationships.
Eddie is suggesting that Buck could’ve found another girlfriend with her own couch if he had wanted to, but he hasn’t. His tone of voice is interesting to me because he’s not necessarily jealous but it does come off as somewhat passive.
B: “Maybe I don’t want to pick the wrong couch again.”
As Buck says these words, he holds intense eye contact with Eddie. It’s a heated look for sure because he’s trying to make Eddie understand that sure he couldn’t gotten another couch/girlfriend but he’s worried about finding another wrong person. He’s been burnt a few times and his last relationship was all kinds of wrong, which Eddie knows. So the fact that Buck is looking him in the eyes while saying that, slightly raising his brows to challenge Eddie to say something in return is very interesting. Again it’s like they’re definitely not talking about couches but instead talking about the fact that Eddie basically asked Buck why he hasn’t put himself out there again. Meanwhile Buck is informing Eddie that he’s not actively looking for anybody because he doesn’t want to jump into things and risk the next person being a wrong choice again.
Tumblr media
(Gif by @whosoldherout)
I also find Buck’s look to have underlying fond tones. Because even when he’s questioning Eddie, he can’t help the love and fondness that is directed towards him everytime he looks his way. You can see it in his eyes, they’re open and it’s his special look he has reserved for Eddie. But there’s a definite underlying heat to them. Something’s changed because the looks they shared back and forth felt charged with something. They definitely have a sorta flirting back and forth going on in that moment and it’s so similar to how they used to be before their respective girlfriends.
One thing I want to mention is I love how both Eddie and Christopher show their love through teasing. That is sort of their own special love language and I think it was so cute and important for it to be Christopher who started the entire couch conversation by simple telling Buck that he “Doesn’t even have a couch.”
Exasperated Fond Husband Mode Activated:
During the scene in the golf course, I just want to mention how married they are. Buck is acting like an overactive puppy but only so he can prove to Bobby that he is a great candidate for interim captain. Eddie catches on almost immediately to his behavior. The part where Buck is closing off the entire area with caution tape and Eddie glances over his shoulder to where Buck is being Buck, it’s typical exasperated husband energy. He rolls his eyes and looks away in a I can’t believe I love this idiot kinda way. You can tell there isn’t anything malicious behind this look. On the contrary, it’s Eddie’s patented fond, exasperated husband look that is only for Buck. We’ve seen many other instances where he looks at him like this. One prime example is when Buck was teaching Ravi how to break the door in 5.04 and Eddie looked back and rolled his eyes again. This look only comes out when Buck is trying to put on a façade and overcompensate at work. I believe it’s because Eddie knows how capable and what a good firefighter Buck is. So he doesn’t think Buck needs to put on an act and be someone he isn’t to do the job they do. Hence the exasperated fond eye roll.
Tumblr media
(Gif by @aa-lionheart)
Saws and Jaws Bring Out the Heart Eyes:
Eddie Diaz is completely smitten over on excitable Evan Buckley. Especially when it comes to Evan Buckley with his saw. You see Eddie standing behind Buck and I love how they immediately share a moment where they have a conversation with their eyes. They always seek each other on the job for any reassurance or just to check in with the one person they’re so close to.
Tumblr media
(Gif by @jakejensen)
The heart eyes he can’t help but bring out when Buck is in his element just goes to show that Eddie likes when Buck is Buck. He loves his Buck and doesn’t think he should change himself because he’s perfect the way he is. It’s a vast difference to his exasperated look when Buck is trying to overcompensate and do more than he needs to and it shows. Eddie is at ease and when he’s at ease, his natural love and fondness for Buck just comes out. It’s like second nature for Eddie to look at Buck like this. His little smile and proud stance further proves that he likes when Buck is like this, in his element, doing what he’s best at.
Bobby and Buck + Couch Debacle Part 2:
Adding to the entire couch discussion, I think it was very important for Buck and Bobby to have the discussion they did at the station. It’s no surprise that Buck looks up to Bobby as a father figure and he was hurting inside over the fact that Bobby didn’t even think of him as a candidate for interim captain.
Buck asking Bobby if the reason for him not choosing him was “Because I don’t have a couch” was a great leeway into Bobby tackling what’s really bothering Buck. When Bobby asks Buck why he doesn’t have a couch, he opens up the floor for discussing what the real issue is that is bothering Buck.
Buck explains how he’s been having trouble picking one out because he’s afraid of making another mistake. Him confiding in Bobby that his previous relationship was a mistake is huge because again he views Bobby like a father figure. He feels comfortable enough to let him on his worries because he knows Bobby won’t diminish his feelings. On the contrary, he’ll help him out, which is exactly what happens here. He uses his own life experiences to try and connect with Buck so that it’s done on a more personal level.
BN: “In AA, there’s this idea that you take inventory of your life, admit your shortcomings, and hope that one day, you can look at the world straight in the eye and be alone at perfect peace and ease.”
B: “You uh, don’t think I’m at ease?”
BN: “I think the important thing is that you answer that question yourself. But when you are, you’ll know. And then you’ll be ready.”
Now here is another example of two conversations occurring simultaneously. They’re not really talking about couches and Bobby knows that to an extent. He knows what Buck suffers with the most and that is finding who he is and what his place is in the world. He’s looking for a partner that will stay and love him now he seeks. He’s been searching for that kinda love for a long time and Bobby knows that. Bobby in his own words is basically saying that he shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes or find the wrong person. There’s nothing wrong with being single for a bit and figuring out who you are while single. He wants him to embrace this about himself so that eventually when the right person does come along he will be ready.
That then leads to the final scene where we have Eddie and Christopher at home playing their game. The next clip is of Buck in his living room. He grabs the lone arm chair and moves it so that it’s in the middle of the living room, where the couch should be. This is him embracing his single hood for the time being and not being in any rush to go out and get a new couch (meet a new person). This is him being secure in himself and maybe taking this time to learn who he is without being in a relationship and who he is outside of his job. For now he’s happy with his choice but it leaves so many things open for interpretation. Because his conversation with Eddie is still a major factor in his decision to not get a couch. And a part of me thinks that we probably won’t even see Buck get another couch because the couch he’s been looking for, the right couch has been in front of him this entire time. And this perfect couch will be there waiting for Buck for whenever he’s finally ready to choose it.

This episode frustrated me how dare they say that about she she sees him more then he sees himself and how she’s different no that’s not what was shown. What was shown is that she’s not into him at all for the person she’s into him cause he died. I really truly hope buck wakes up quickly and realizes this relationship is going to go nowhere. She doesn’t care about him and the writers want us to seriously think she’s a viable love interest nope sorry not working.
love I am saying this with all the kindness in my heart (like, genuinely, it sounds like most of your disappointment and frustration might be self-inflicted!), but you literally answered your own question here - it is not working and she is not what buck is trying to make himself believe she is to him and that IS THE POINT and the writers are making that point on purpose
I do not know why you (and so many others) are so convinced that everything buddie happens on accident and that the relationships with the various love interests are trainwrecks on accident as well, like, they are telling a story here, and it is not a straight (haha xD) line from point A to point B, it's a winding path with dead ends and wrong turns and obstacles like in real life, which I personally think is a way better and more intersting story <3 and that means trying things and failing, which includes relationships that aren't endgame, but which are an important opportunity for you to learn something about yourself and what you want from a relationship and who you want to BE in a relationship
and so these relationships feel off because they are SUPPOSED to! if they wanted you to actually like and get on board with a love interest, they WOULD get you there, I promise you, the way they are handling the relationships of madney, bathena, henren and even more background couples like david and michael and toni and clive and even sue and her husband and couples on calls like the amnesia couple in 5x18 or the lesbians from 5x9 or mitchell and thomas from waaay back in 2x8 for example should tell you that they absolutely know exactly how to write healthy and beautiful and lovely relationships that feel right and satisfactory -like even for the background couples, with just a handful of scenes they got me so invested in those couples and I was rooting for them sooooo hard!!! so if they wanted us to feel that way about a buck or eddie LI, I am pretty sure they absolutely would do an amazing job convincing us (and would have started doing so waaay before this point in time if we are being honest xD), but they very much ARE NOT, BECAUSE THAT IS THE POINT, those relationships are not meant to be taken as endgame options and we are not supposed to be rooting for them and I promise your experience with this show is going to improve soooo so so much when you start trusting the writers on being able to tell you whether or not to get invested in a couple, because it will spare you so so so much anxiety, I really really promise!
also, side note, 'they' (as in 'the writers' I assume?) did not say anything at all, Buck said that she sees him, because he is an unreliable narrator and he is misunderstanding a MULTITUDE of things in very unhealthy ways at the moment, but that that doesn't make it true that she sees him in any way, shape or form, they are indeed literally showing IN THE SAME scene that what buck is saying is bullshit, because Eddie is the one who actually sees him and Buck is missing it (and they told us he WOULD miss the point this season, when in episode 1 he had that line about 'excellent options right under his nose' and 'like he is choosing not to see them'! buck is very much missing the obvious and reaching all the wrong conclusions!)
so yeah, to summarize - the relationship is feeling off on PURPOSE because that is the kind of story they are telling and if they wanted you to actually root for them, they would go about it very differently (which we know they can pull off!) and so I would recommend to have a little more faith in the writers and let yourself look at what they are really actually putting down instead of giving too much weight to bad faith conspiracy theories here on tumblr about how the writers are forcing buddie appart and trying to force us into believing in love interests that are very unsubtly and in text already heavily doomed!!!

Sorry I like... have to write a Buck meta right now:
He's just...he's so unsure of himself, and hides it behind that macho bravado that gets him through everything, that makes sure no one asks any questions.
He's used to people telling him that he's selfish or reckless or "makes things about him." But it's like they don't see, and therefore he doesn't see, that he might be the most kind and giving person in the entire show.
Like, let's just take a look at just a couple of the most recent examples in my watch:
Christmas. He knew that Eddie was upset that he couldn't spend Christmas with Chris, and he knew that Chris was upset and feeling like he was going to be alone on Christmas (asking Buck if he could spend Christmas with him). So he gets together with Athena and coordinates an entire surprise thing so that the whole crew can spend Christmas with their families. He coordinates Christmas dinner because that was the only thing he wanted, He pulled down mistletoe just to kiss Hen on the cheek. He spends the day with Chris because that was what he wanted.
Red. He meets Red in a bar, finds an affinity with him immediately, and he tries to better his situation. Sure, taking him to see Cindy was a mistake, but he was just trying to do right by him, make sure that he didn't feel so lonely. And then, in the end, when Red tells him that he has mesothelioma, that he can't be saved, that Buck is 40 years too late, he calls what looks like every firefighter he knows and has him sit in the captain's chair to be taken home to pass away at peace, without feeling so alone.
And Chris. Everything about Chris. How hard he fought to find Chris during the tsunami, how easy it is for him to hang out with Chris, do things with Chris, make Chris feel like the superstar he is. Buck, who we never see interact with kids before Chris arrives, takes to him immediately, and becomes one of the most trusted adults in his life. "His Buck."
It's like no one sees this. It's like they just see the class clown and the reckless young firefighter, but the don't see how vulnerable he is and how tightly he clings to the people he loves. How he screamed and sobbed and dug at the dirt to try and get Eddie out, how he fought to get to Maddie when she was kidnapped by Doug and when the dispatch station was taken. How worried he was about Bobby when he was exposed to the radiation and Hen when she was working through the accident and Chim when he was stabbed.
They are his family, and sometimes it's like they don't see how much he needs them. Yes he tries to hide it but you can almost see him white knuckling every relationship in his life because he's terrified it's going to go away.
He's so kind, so generous with his love and his heart, and I just want someone to give that back to him, to love him as unconditionally as he loves the rest of them, and for them to show him that, to really show him that they'll be there for him no matter what. Maddie does, of course, but someone who can put him first, prioritize him, not let "life happen" and him to be pushed to the side.
I've made my silly little shitposts about how he's cementing himself as a forever character, but he's truly carved himself onto my heart, what an incredible and deeply complex character that Oliver Stark has created, and I can't wait to see the rest of his journey.

barty's inscrutability is so funny just because its like. he's winning the repression olympics without even realizing by wrapping his true self away in endless untraversable turns like a conch shell. having a situationship with him is like volunteering to lock yourself in the torture labyrinth bro you are never making it out of there!! you will spend years trying to unravel his feelings and get absolutely nowhere but still constantly feel like you’re on the verge of getting there!!! (reg lived this #survivor)
but just imagine finally meeting the ONE (1) person who has ever managed to lock barty down. and it’s this tiny utterly demented blonde who dresses in lumpy estate sale cardigans and always smells a little bit like formaldehyde and mothballs and the inside of a hearse. he has the thousand-yard-stare and pop culture references of a feral child raised by coyotes because he didn’t have a single interaction with someone his own age (besides his equally strange sister) until he was like 17. he’ll cut you with zero hesitation 🔪. he's the most autistic person youve ever met in your entire life and whenever Notoriously Unattainable™️ Barty Crouch looks at him he’s like please evan let me lay down to be the ground under your feet so you never have to touch the earth again only me forever PLEASE

I am!! So obsessed with how it was Buck & Ravi who were the ones who were needed to save the firefam this finale. Like it needs to be both of them they're both paying it forward. Ravi saw the car go over the bridge and jumped into action, he had it stuck in his head and Chimney told him to hand it off because he was still needed, he could still do good. Buck was the only one in physical harm in the lightning strike, where the firefam tried so desperately to make sure he was okay.
And then it’s Ravi holding the anchor, being the rope for Buck to get to the firefam. It’s Buck getting to hold onto Chimney and making sure he’s got him. It’s the way the firefam dragged Ravi back emotionally and Buck back physically and the two of them then pay it forward on the bridge and work together to bring their family back!!

It's always sad to think about that Eddie also hasn't ever felt real love, whether be it from his parents or his partner. It was clear that his parents and Shannon made him feel like he wasn't good enough. When she came back to LA, he was good enough for a hook-up, but then she presented him with a divorce. I don't think he would have married her if his parents hadn't forced him because she was pregnant. He could never do things his own way. Would love to hear your thoughts on that.
Hi Nonnie! Thank you so much for this ask.
TBH, Shannon is someone who I’m very ambivalent about. I don’t think she was a bad person. See, in Texas I can understand why she left. I may not agree with her leaving or how she did it, the fact that she didn’t even tell Eddie she‘s thinking about it, or the way she cut off Chris when she left his dad, but I can understand why she was unhappy and feeling suffocated. I can understand making bad choices when life keeps throwing difficulties at you for so long, you don’t necessarily think straight anymore. I also assume she didn’t mean to leave Eddie himself. It seemed more like she wanted to leave the package that surrounded being married to him.
So years later, she’s in LA and Eddie contacts her. He’s moved there and all of a sudden, being with him doesn’t necessarily come with that entire package Shannon couldn’t deal with before. I don’t believe she had any concrete plan in mind when she came to meet him in 207, but that once she saw him, she couldn’t just walk out again. He’s furious with her for abandoning them, but by the end of that ep, he comes to understand her and they kiss. Is she forgiven? No. Her betrayal was too great and Eddie doesn’t feel reassured yet that she won’t walk out on them again. So he keeps her from seeing Chris. What gets to me is that in 210, Shannon indicates her and Eddie had been sleeping together for almost two months before she puts her foot down and insists on seeing her son. I have to admit, that one always rubbed me the wrong way. If she had been that loving and repentant mother, I don’t think she could have taken being so close to Chris without seeing him for that long. Especially not after she previously claimed to be focused on being reunited with her son.
Then Eddie agrees to reunite their family by the end of that Xmas ep, and she has both him and Chris, but no commitment. She seems to be pushing in that direction in 217, asking Eddie what they are, and telling him she might be pregnant again. Just like you said, he implies that they first married not because he wanted to, but because of her pregnancy. Then, at the restaurant, Eddie takes the final leap with her, after he let her back in on every other level, and is ready to re-commit. But Shannon doesn’t want to. She got everything back, but just as Eddie feared, she now wants to leave them again. I think in all that time she took away from them, she never really figured out what she wanted, which is why she’s so all over the place. She wants her son, but she’s okay just sleeping with her dad. She wants Eddie, but she breaks up with him the second he’s truly ready for her. She begs to be forgiven for having left, but then she does the same thing again. I think she was so thoroughly confused, she just couldn’t make coherent decisions.
Here’s the thing. That’s not a reflection on Eddie and how lovable he is, but when he was already carrying the baggage of how little he felt accepted and loved by his parents, especially his dad, this is exactly how he interpreted Shannon’s rejection. And it breaks my heart. The fact that she didn’t just leave, she died, means he could never hope to one day work things out with her, get to a place of being friendly exes and co-parents. Some things in life are final and can’t be fixed. That’s why I’m extra happy that he and Ramon are working things out and building a better r/s. That’s Eddie’s core trauma, and with it healing, that can allow him to revisit other ones and find better, kinder interpretations for them as well.
And of course, he has Buck now. Buck’s the guy who fights for Eddie, to be by his side, to help him, to make things better for him. Eddie has never had that before, and it’s so full of love and grace, you can tell that affects everything. IDK how Eddie would have handled the aftermath of the shooting if Buck weren’t there. I’m convinced that Eddie can get along better with Ramon thanks in part to the support he’s had from Buck. I don’t think there are any love stories that get me more emotional than the ones where two people who’ve been deeply wronged help heal each other. And that’s what we have in Buddie.
Hope I managed to answer satisfactorily, and here’s my ask tag! xoxox

Rereading The Terror
Chapter Four: Goodsir
Goodsir is ever so grateful when Gore and Stanley kindly and tactfully inform him that it’s customary for the officers not to show emotion when they’re first setting sail from Greenhithe which is just heart-breaking to me. You know that sweet boy would’ve been shouting and waving and having a rare old time otherwise. It’s so cruel and daft for them all to deny themselves that pleasure, it really is.
Not much else jumps out at me in this chapter except for a few grimly prophetic phrases here and there - he’s writing in 1845 and is terribly full of hope and excitement.
Chapter Five: Crozier
A shot is heard out on the ice and we get a lovely little glimpse of the well-oiled machine the Terrors were and should’ve continued to be - by the time Crozier exits his cabin to investigate the shot, Little, Hodgson, and Irving are already there, multiple weapons in hand and all ready to rock. Good job, boys!
Some hilariously harsh words about Private Heather - “The other man on watch was the oldest - and in Crozier’s estimation, the stupidest - of the surviving Marines, William Heather. At age 35 and still a private, frequently sick, too often drunk, and most frequently useless”.
Another sweary legend in the form of Mr Hornby - ““Belay that!” cries the first mate. “No fucking profanity. Speak when you’re fucking spoken to Crispe.” Hornby’s voice is a cross between a mastiff’s growl and a bull’s snort.”
Crozier uses a whole flurry of first names when organising the search party which I find incredibly sweet - he calls Dr Peddie ‘John’ and even uses a cheeky wee nickname, calling the Second Mate Robert Thomas ‘Bob’. Very sweet and personable for once!
Look, I’m a proud Scottish woman and I consider swearing to be an art form so Crozier really takes the biscuit at the end of this chapter, right after wee Evans is taken by the Tuunbaq -  “Come out and try me instead of a boy, you hairy arse-licking rat-fucking piss-drinking spawn of a poxy Highgate whore!” Just outstanding stuff.

okay um i was thinking about how in 4x02 eddie attaches the rope to buck's harness and i was like going crazy over the obvious of them just trusting each other so implicitly but um then i remembered that the story carla reads to chris and eddie at the end of 402 is about "an invisible string tying me to you" and um.
