Heart failure is widely recognized as a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Though there have been great strides made in medical technology over the past few decades, heart failure remains widespread, with 64 million people globally suffering from it. Though early symptoms do show up, heart failure is often undetected until it reaches an acute stage. The ability to identify heart failure at an early stage will allow for a reduction in mortality rates through early intervention and preventative care. A new challenge was announced, which asked its participants to build predictive models, providing new insights into the risk factors behind this deadly disease.
Multiple factors have been implicated as potential causes of heart failure. In recent years, human gut flora has inspired much intrigue as studies increasingly demonstrate its ability to influence bodily processes and the progression of disease. Gut microbiota has been demonstrated to influence oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and inflammation, all of which impact the development of heart failure. Though these associations have been reported before, there haven’t been many studies at the population level on the gut microbiome and incidence of heart failure so far. However, it is possible that better comprehension of these complex processes surrounding the disease’s pathophysiology can lead to earlier identification and better therapeutic methods.

Processing medical trauma through fanfic? Yes, please.
This fic is super personal to me and feels quite like I’m baring my soul to everybody. I’ve never been quite so open with my medical journey but it’s helping me dissociate from my current severe pain, and helping me organize my thoughts about my trauma. So that’s nice.
If you read it, I’d love to hear any thoughts or questions you have! 💜

Please Help Two Queer, Disabled Siblings Stay Housed!!
Tumblr media
Hey, y'all! We could really use help ... Our local synagogue was supposed to help us pay our January rent last week, but we found out five days later (Sunday night) that the board staged a coup against the treasurer instead, and they weren't going to help us after all. This was after our landlord had already waited past the date they normally start eviction proceedings, and we've been trying to raise what we need all week since then. We've raised some, but not enough.
Our landlord still hasn't filed, but our luck could run out at any time here. We still need $450 to get caught up and avoid eviction this month. If they file with the court, we'll have court costs and a much shorter time limit to get it done. Edit: My sibling had to go to the ER Friday because they were passing a kidney stone, and we had to spend money on cab fare, meds, and supplies. We now need to raise $530 to pay our rent.
My sibling and I are both disabled and chronically ill, we have no car, and our community doesn't have live-in shelters of any kind, so we'd literally be out on the streets if we get evicted. My sibling also had to go to the ED on Friday (1/19) with a kidney stone. We are too sick to be homeless.
If we could get 45 53 people to give $10, we'd be set. If you can only give $1, that still helps us get closer to our goal, and we'd really appreciate it. If you can give more, of course, that is also great. If you can't give anything, a repost on Tumblr or any of your other social media would also be so helpful.
Our pay apps are:
Paypal: nivcharayahel
Venmo: heathmarie31
CashApp: $heathmarie31
Thank you so much for your attention and help!

Oedema - pitting vs non-pitting
Oedema is swelling due to excess fluids in tissues.
In pitting oedema, pressing on the affected area leaves an indentation (that persists after removing the pressure). In non-pitting oedema, the area feels firm to touch and does not form indentations.
Pitting oedema:
The excess fluid is mainly composed of water
Commonly caused by heart failure, venous insufficiency, or nephrotic syndrome
Non-pitting oedema:
The excess fluid consists of water WITH protein and salts
Usually indicates a condition of the thyroid / lymphatic system
Different types:
Lymphoedema is due to a build-up of lymphatic fluid (e.g. due to a tumour blocking lymphatic flow / after removal of lymph nodes).
Myxoedema occurs in hypothyroidism and often affected the pretibial or periorbital area.
Angioedema is localised swelling of the skin and is usually due to allergic reactions. It typically affects the face, tongue, larynx, abdomen, arms, and legs. When the larynx is affected, it may affect breathing, which is an emergency!
Lipoedema is when fat accumulates in subcutaneous tissues - it usually affects the legs/buttocks and almost exclusively occurs in postpubertal females (not the same as cellulite!)
If patients present with oedema, it's always important to test if it's pitting or non-pitting as this helps to determine the cause and correct treatment!

"Extrapolating from an estimated US population of V142I allele carriers aged 50 to 95 years (435 851 persons), the authors calculated the total number of years of life lost among untreated carriers to approach 1 million years. It is important to note that carriers were not identified as having ATTR-CA and were untreated with contemporary TTR disease-modifying therapies. Thus, this tremendous gap in years of life lost among those who carry V142I is what can be expected to be ameliorated or even eliminated with early ascertainment and prescription of effective therapies."
tl;dr - a genetic cause of cardiac amyloidosis that results in heart failure among the US black population has been identified, and screening for it and treating it early can save the lives of many, many black people. There are a lot of barriers to carrying this out, of course, most of which come from structural racism in the American healthcare system as well as historical harms which have resulted in an earned lack of trust.....but it's nice to have another opportunity to save black lives, which continue to matter. And more discussion about the complexities of applying this advance of knowledge into meaningful, real-world results:
Science is wonderful, but breakthroughs don't happen in a vacuum, and just because we CAN have this significant positive effect....theoretically.....doesn't mean there aren't SIGNIFICANT challenges and barriers we continue to need to work on.
