When Viktor first met you, you’d been a flurry of conversation and bright smiles. You’d been the only two students in the library at such a late hour and, having seen a single lamp on, you’d come over to say hello. I didn’t think anyone else would be here so late, you’d said as you’d taken a seat beside him, I’m surprised someone else has a key to the library. Viktor had given you a polite smile, and explained that he -at a Professor’s Assistant- was able to go all kinds of places that the general student body could not. The two of you had chatted until the wee hours of the morning, sharing laughter and pleasantly profound conversations. But when every second word you’d uttered had been spaced by yawns, you’d finally caved and said goodnight; and he did not expect to see you again.

But a couple of days later, he ran into you in the hallways in between classes. You were standing around with a couple other students, all sharing conversations with each other, while you simply listened. A couple times he saw you try to interject with your own story, but each attempt was nudged aside; after the third time, you finally turned away to wait a couple feet down the hall. Until you saw him.

Immediately your face lit up, and you skipped over to him with a kind smile. “I thought I might never see you again,” you said, coming to a stop just in front of him. “I’ve been keeping an eye out for you, but you’re quite elusive, you know?” It makes his heart flutter slightly when he learns that your previous conversation had such an impact on you as to seek him out. I am very busy, he explains, and I spend most of my time in classrooms, helping with grading, and it turns out to be the right thing to say. You ask him which classrooms he’s usually in, and if he would be amicable to having you around from time to time.

“Would your friends not mind you disappearing like that?” he asks, nodding towards the group of people you’d been with a couple moments ago. He doesn’t miss the way your expression falls slightly, nor does he miss the way you quickly shove it away to replace it with a somewhat forced smile. “They’re ah…not really my friends,” you mumble, tugging idly on the sleeves of your blouse, “they’re my cousin’s. I’m staying with her while I go to school here, since I’m from-” you pause suddenly, and quickly shake your head. “I’m not local, is all. And all they want to do is go out and party - not to say that’s a bad thing! I’m just- I’m not- good with people, most of the time. Or loud noises.” Viktor tilts his head slightly, but doesn’t press on the matter. You seem far too gentle to be from the undercity, far too good-spirited and soft…though he supposes he doesn’t know you all that well. “I wouldn’t be opposed to some company,” he tells you, his heart once again skipping a beat when you beam at him. “As long as you don’t mind my occasional…spirited discussion about all the terrible theses the Professor has me grading?”

"Kim," Chay declares solemnly, "I'll only forgive you if you audition and get a part in this musical."

"But I -- I'm not an actor."

Kim deflates at Chay's flat stare.

He gives a barely perceptible nod of agreement and Chay is off like a shot, hands waving in the air like he's flagging down a rescue helicopter and not their university theatre director. "Wait, please, we'd like to audition!"

She turns sharply on her heel and frowns over the rim of her old-fashioned spectacles. "I'm sorry, but as you clearly heard just a moment ago, auditions for the spring musical are now closed. Besides, you don't have a partner and these are couple's auditions."

Big and Ken look on smugly from the wings, still in their matching bedazzled outfits.

Kim runs a hand through his hair, exhales, and follows Chay into the aisle of the main auditorium. "I'll sing with him, Ma'am."

"You?!" she clutches her literal, actual pearls. Kim barely resists the urge to roll his eyes. "Don't you have some kind of sporting event to attend, Kimhan!?"

"Kim is fine."

"Please?" Chay pouts. Kim is filled with nothing but pride as he watches the old woman crumble under the power of those huge brown puppy-dog eyes.

"Fine! I'll make an exception just this once." She shoots Kim a look that bodes poorly for his father and the entire swim team. "The department should be making an effort to engage with the whole community, after all... PLACES!"

I hope you were expecting this. I really do. (My personal New Year's Eve tradition is to watch High School Musical and eat some of those dope frozen cream puffs from Costco)

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

god I'm so fucking furious at the removal of Te Reo Māori names from organisations around Aotearoa. it's a complete non-issue, every organisation has the English name directly underneath the Māori name. I have never once as an English speaker been unable to understand what an organisation is for. Winston Peters, the Deputy Prime Minister, who is literally Māori himself, said “Te Papa is a historic name but tell me this waka kotahi, how many boats have you seen going down the road?”. Waka does not just mean canoe. it means vessel, and waka kotahi (the transport agency of Aotearoa) explains this VERY SIMPLY on their official website. waka kotahi means to travel together as one. Can you see how fucking upsetting this is. A Māori person in power who is in agreement about banning his own language, being so cocky about something that he does not even understand due to the suppression of the language of his people. It makes me sick. I've seen reports from Māori people all over Aotearoa speaking out about how upset and furious they are, how decades of progress have been undone in the fight to restore the rights of their people who have for so long been oppressed and have suffered the effects of colonisation. Please share this if you can, I hate knowing how few people will hear about this, I know there is so much injustice in the world right now and it is so exhausting, I know. I love you all, keep it up.
