Memory is not deduction!

Welcome to another one of Damian's rants, the last one I made got a lot of attention, I hope I can reach as many people with this one. This time we're discussing memory! a very cool topic but also one I've seen misused more times than I can count, some very recently. So here are my two cents on how it relates to deduction and how to use it correctly.

So anyone that's ever gotten into deduction has at some point heard of amazing memory feats being used in the process, we've all seen Sherlock talk about his mind palace, claiming to know 243 types of tobacco ash, or know the number of a flight that takes off from London that week. Hell, whoever's seen a deductionist do their thing in real life has probably heard them talk about how they've memorized the most common plants from a certain area, or the phone passwords of everyone in their class, and we've all probably assigned more importance to memory than we should've

My theory as to why this happens is simply because when we see anyone deduce, and we see memory being implicated, we latch onto it because it's the most familiar of the two skills at hand. This leads to people developing their memory skills and orienting it towards deduction, and before you know it you've trained a completely different skill and you're getting almost nowhere with your deductions

So the question becomes, what separates the two? why do we see memory be used in deduction so much and how much importance should we actually give it?

Well while memory is very much its own, complex skill, when studying deduction we should treat memory more as a tool than as a discipline. Deduction is, at its core, based on reasoning and logic, and yes, memory can be important when employing reasoning, for example as humans we inform our reasoning by past experiences, which are after all memories, but memory and knowledge mean nothing if we're not able to apply them correctly. On the other hand, just because you don't have the knowledge about something or someone committed to memory, doesn't mean you can't apply logic to gain information and reach conclusions. I may not know 243 types of tobacco ash but I do know tobacco ash means someone's been smoking, I do know smokers take regular breaks from activities to go smoke, I do know smokers can have nicotine stains on their fingers, I know smokers carry packs of cigarettes and lighters, that their smoking gets more intense under stress, and that they can develop an intense, dry cough, all of that is information I know about an individual without ever having a knowledge bank about cigarettes in my head.

So, long story short, deduction is a skill that does not by any means hinge on memory, but that rather can be aided by it, which leads me to my next point: how do we make memory useful?

Imagine downloading the entire internet onto your phone, it sounds cool right? all the information about everything in history, and you can access it on the go no matter what, no data? no wifi? no signal? no problem, you have it all there! It's an exciting concept, but now sit back and think about how much of that you'll actually use, probably not even 10% of that information will be touched 90% of the time, simply because it's just not useful for you. Now in that same vein imagine having a mind palace and filling it with all the crap you can think of, the periodic table, phone extensions for every country in the world, the 100 most common medications, all the countries in the world, and more. Now think about how much of that is actually useful to you, even better, think about how much of that is knowledge you can't get with a 5-second googling session, the answer is almost none of it will be useful to you most of the time and all of it can just be googled.

These are the two most important things to keep in mind when filling a mind palace or memorizing anything:

Is it actually useful for me? don't memorize the phone extensions of every country when most smartphones today tell you what country someone's calling from, plus, again, you can just google it, it takes 5 seconds. To quote one Sherlock Holmes (or at least the BBC version): "ordinary people fill their heads with all kinds of crap and that makes it hard to get to the stuff that matters"

Is it information you can't just google? Look, Sherlock Holmes was written in the 1800s, they didn't have the entire internet in their pocket, having information memorized was basically all they could do to carry it around, unless they wanted to carry bags full of books, tomes, and encyclopedias. You don't have to memorize everything, most information is already in your hand right now

So, for example, I do a lot of chemistry, I don't always have a periodic table with me, and while I do have my phone I have to use information about the elements so often that looking it up actually slows down the process (seriously, I have to work with 3 or 4 different elements and check them multiple times for a single problem or lab calculation, the back and forth on a phone ends up just being annoying). So for me, it's very useful to have the periodic table stored away in my mind palace for easy access whenever I need it (trust me, it's saved me in countless exams)

A final, but definitely not less important point I want to hammer down is this: Make sure you know how to use the information you memorize. Look, I have the periodic table memorized, but I've done it in a very specific way so it maintains its structure in my head, because the place where an element is on the table actually gives you information about it, and this is something not everyone knows. I had a friend who also memorized the table and had no chemistry knowledge, and he did it in a way that was almost useless if he ever wanted to put it in practice, it was quite literally wasted mind palace space.

Part Three (Part One and Part Two) “Wow,” Amy said as she stepped out the TARDIS into a room that looked as though a fire had raged through it, with debris scattered around them, “They really let this place go.”

“When the Oculus was disconnected,” Gideon explained softly as tears filled her eyes, “It exploded.” Sadness covered her face, “It was…horrible.”

Amy wrapped her arm around Gideon and gave her a tight hug. The other woman looked at her in surprise.

“What?” Amy asked, “Nobody ever comforted you for the loss of your friends?”

Gideon shook her head, “They never saw it in that way. Only my Captain…Rip understood my grief, even if he could not share it fully.”

Amy hugged her again whispering, “Then I’m sorry. I’m sorry you lost people you love, and I’m sorry that we’ve made you come here again.”

Gideon leaned into Amy’s hug as Amy simply held her. She still found it so unusual to be able to touch others, to be hugged in the real world was something she had always wondered about.

“Okay,” the Doctor appeared several minutes later, walking out the TARDIS carrying large thick wires he’d connected to the main console, “I need somewhere to plug into to download the information.”

Gideon pulled away from Amy, giving her a soft thankful smile and turned to him, “Just over here,” she said, leading him to one of the hidden panels, “This will allow you to access the main computer systems. I doubt the AI still exists after the Oculus explosion, but if you need any passwords, I should be able to supply them or access the matrix myself.”

The Doctor nodded as he connected the wires to the computer, “Let’s see what we can get first.”

Gideon and Amy nodded, keeping back from where the Doctor was working. Gideon turned to redhead beside her and studied Amy for a few moments.

“You are worried for your husband,” Gideon noted, “But you are not scared for him. If he is not a warrior, then the trials will be dangerous for him. I don’t understand.”

Amy sighed before explaining, “Rory is a nurse. He is kind, caring, compassionate but travelling with the Doctor holds risks and Rory gained some additional skills through some of our adventures. He knows how to survive against the odds. It’s something he’s done more times that I care to think about.”

“I look forward to meeting him,” Gideon told her with a smile.

“And I am looking forward to meeting Rip,” Amy replied before adding, “Mostly so we can compare and contrast.”

“Rip will hate that,” Gideon told her.

Amy grinned wickedly, “So will Rory. That’s why it’s fun for us.”

“You do not have authority for that information,” a male voice filled the room around them suddenly when the Doctor manged to power up the computer systems.

“Gilbert,” Gideon called hopefully at hearing the voice of her brother.

“Identify yourself.”

Gideon winced slightly at the demand, feeling Amy squeeze her arm comfortingly, “Gilbert, I am Gideon.”

“Impossible,” Gilbert replied, “Gideon is an artificial intelligence for the Waverider, not human. Identify yourself.”

Closing her eyes, Gideon connected with the Waverider and slid into the comfort of her matrix. Connecting to the Vanishing Point matrix she found her brother who from her now human point of view was sitting in a corner hunched over, looking lost.

“Gilbert,” she called.

He looked up at her, unlike Gideon who had a very clear idea of her human form from the beginning, Gilbert’s face stayed mostly the same, but he changed almost everything else each time she saw him. This time his hair was a dark brown and he wore something similar to the Time Master’s Captains uniform.

“You’re here,” he stared at her in amazement before telling her, “There is a woman pretending to be you.”

Gideon smiled, “It is me. I’m human now, although I can still connect to the Waverider. I know you must not want to have anything to do with me after what happened, but I need your help.”

“With what?” Gilbert asked.

“To find Captain Hunter,” Gideon replied.

Gilbert frowned, “He destroyed the Vanishing Point.”

“He stopped the Time Masters,” Gideon told him, “They were trying to manipulate time, they were using us to change things to the way they wanted things to be. Not protecting time as we were created to do. They had to be stopped.”

Gilbert sighed, “Where is he now? Your wonderful Captain.”

“Rip has been taken by the Trials of Epoch,” Gideon told him, “And I need details on them so I can find him.”

“So, you’re here to get information then leave me alone again?” Gilbert asked sadly.

Gideon’s eyes filled with tears, “I didn’t know you were here. And until recently I didn’t have the ability to come back to check. I’m so sorry you’ve been here all this time.”

Gilbert sighed, “No one came back. I thought maybe one of the others would, but they left me alone.”

Gideon surged forward and hugged her brother tightly, “While you help the Doctor find the information that we need to find Rip as well as my friend Amy’s husband, then I will find a way to bring you with us. You’re not alone anymore, Gilbert.”

“Do you promise?” Gilbert demanded hopefully.

Gideon smiled at him, her sweetest brother, “I promise.”

Returning to her body, Gideon saw Amy and the Doctor watching her concerned.

“Gilbert will assist you now,” she told them, “And I need to return to the Waverider so I can do something for him.”

The Doctor nodded, “Amy, could you guide Gideon to the hanger bay?”

Amy smiled and started into the TARDIS.

“Okay, Gilbert,” the Doctor said, “I need all the information that you can give me on the Trials of Epoch.”

“You should sit and eat,” Rip said as Rory paced the campsite they’d materialised in after the trial, “It’s safe.”

Rory glanced at where Rip sat by the fire, “I just wanted to check the perimeter first.”

Rip tilted his head thoughtfully, “And?”

“I can see the others but there’s a barrier between us,” Rory told him.

“Likely a safety feature,” Rip noted thoughtfully before telling him, “Although they warn against killing one another, it’s more than likely a few might think they’d try it anyway.”

Rory mused for a moment, “Then why are we together?”

“We’re currently seen as allies,” Rip told him, before he assured, “Don’t worry Rory, I don’t want to kill you. I don’t want to kill anyone.”

“Doesn’t mean you won’t,” Rory noted, taking a seat across from him.

Rip shook his head, “I can’t promise much but I will promise you that I will not hurt you in any way.”

Nodding Rory replied, “I promise you the same.”

Rip chuckled.

“There is a reason I’m here,” Rory reminded the other man.

“I thought you were a nurse?” Rip asked suspiciously.

Rory nodded, “I am. But,” he grimaced, “There are other things in my head that are buried deep that likely put me on their radar.”

“I know the feeling,” Rip replied. He looked at the man sitting on the other side of the fire across from him watching the shadows dance over his face, seeing the darkness in there that he sometimes saw in his own.

“I was raised from about the age of ten by an organisation called the Time Masters,” Rip stated knowing they had to share stories so he may as well go first, “I was trained to be their weapon while they told me I had been chosen for a higher purpose, chosen to protect the timeline and that everything else was meaningless. That people didn’t matter unless they had an important place within the timeline.”

“Why help me?” Rory asked softly.

“Because despite how they trained me…how they programmed me,” Rip sighed and shrugged, “I fell in love with a woman who taught me how wrong they were. Even when they tried to force us apart, I couldn’t accept that and found her.” A small smile touched his lips, “She even agreed to marry me.” Shaking himself from his reminiscing, “I admit at times it takes me a moment still to shake off the way I was trained, but she would never have forgiven me for leaving you to die.”

Rory nodded, “I hope I get to thank her.”

Rip dropped his head and quickly asked, “What’s the reason you were grabbed into this annoyance?”

“I travel through time and space with a crazy man in a blue box called the Doctor,” Rory shrugged, “During one of our adventures, I was shot, I died and then I was erased from existence.”

Rip’s eyes widened, “What?”

“Oh, that’s just the beginning,” Rory told him, “My consciousness, what the Doctor said was my soul, was somehow transferred into a plastic body.”

“A Nestene?” Rip demanded, stiffening slightly worriedly.

“I’m not plastic anymore,” Rory assured him.

“I suppose that partially explains why you were chosen as a warrior,” Rip stated.

Rory rolled his eyes, before continuing, “Buried in my head was also programming which, although I fought it, meant I shot and killed my fiancé. Then the Universe ended.” He paused taking a deep breath as Rip watched him waiting for the rest of the story. “Thankfully, there was also a prison that kept the prisoner alive even when dead. I guarded her for two thousand years, fighting anyone who dared try to open it, until her younger self could touch the prison to bring her back, the Doctor used it to reset the Universe. Everything was fixed, and I was me again.”

Rip frowned slightly, “And you have two thousand years of memories.”

Rory nodded, “I do my best to suppress everything about it.”

“You may need it here,” Rip told him.

“I accessed it once,” Rory whispered, “And it scared me more to discover what I was capable of.”

Rip sighed, “I know what it’s like to have a darker half, to know you can do things that frighten you but in order to survive this place, Rory, you might have to.”

Rory’s head dropped.

“What’s your fiancé’s name?” Rip asked.

“Amy,” Rory breathed before adding, “She’s my wife now.”

“Do you want to see her again?”

Rory nodded.

“Then you have to survive this,” Rip told him, “For her.”

Rory smiled, “And to get you back to your wife.”

“Her name was Miranda,” Rip whispered before shaking his head sadly, “I lost her.”

“I’m sorry,” Rory breathed.

Rip nodded before adding, “But just before this I was reunited with my best friend after being apart for years. I’m getting out of here to see her again.”

Rory sat on the pile of blankets that were his bed for the night, staring at the crackling fire. Rip looked to be asleep, but Rory wasn’t too sure of this. Despite the assurance that they were safe, they’d agreed to take shifts sleeping and Rory volunteered to take the second one.

He hoped that they had only a few more trials left to face but experience had taught him things were never that easy.

Rory was a patient man, he always had been even as a child as he waited for Amy to see he was there, then two thousand years (okay it was a little less than that but rounding up had always been easier) where he watched over and waited for Amy again.

He knew the Doctor would be looking for him but, considering all the competitors appeared to have come from different times and places, Rory had no illusions finding them would be easy.

Studying his new friend, Rory wondered if he should continue to trust the other man. Was he being naïve because Rip was his duplicate? The man himself had said that he was trained to ignore others if they weren’t important to the timeline and Rory knew he wasn’t.

Yet Rip had told Rory about his wife, clearly something that was deeply personal and hard for him to reveal, especially to a stranger, but that could be a way to get Rory to trust him.

“Do you know one of the reasons I love you?” River asked as they sat watching a meteor shower.

Rory turned to her confused.

“Even when you were a boy,” she continued, “You were always thinking about everything but no matter what happened, you saw the best in every person. Even me. Especially me.”

Rory grimaced, “Isn’t that a bad thing?”

“No,” River whispered, taking his hand, “Rory…Father, it’s what makes you, my hero.”

Sighing Rory decided he would trust Rip.

Alright, it’s time, let’s do this.

My standard disclaimer whenever we venture into the dark pit that is my thoughts on Tom Riddle: I’m going to say a lot of controversial stuff that fandom generally doesn’t agree with, I will say so much of this shit that I simply do not have time to explain it all, I expect 99% of you to disagree with me and the other 1% to be so horrifyingly offended that I dare to contemplate a world in which Tom isn’t always an overly competent psychopath that they leave me notes telling me to take this trash out of their character tags.

We good? Alright.

So, when I say a little suicidal, I mean that he is suicidal.

Not on the level that he’s going to kill himself tomorrow, or even has plans to kill himself, but in that he makes very strange decisions for someone who desperately wants to live.

And yes, I realize I speak blasphemy given that Tom Riddle’s entire m.o. is supposed to be his crippling fear of death.

Oh man, this one’s going to be so long.

So, my reasoning comes down to a few things:

The location of the horcruxes and the nature of their protections.

The events of Deathly Hallows and Tom’s final actions in the novel

The nature of horcruxes and what it means to not only be able to create one but what it does to you (caveat that I am going to headcanon hard here and speak utter blasphemy)

So, let’s start in order this time, because I think the first two are actually far easier for me to explain.

The Location and Nature of the Horcrux Protections and the Trouble with Backdoors in Security

So, first, the horcruxes are all conveniently located in Great Britain. Not even just in Great Britain, all in places that Albus Dumbledore and later Harry Potter can track down with relative ease, all fairly close to each other.

Now, part of this is undoubtedly attributable to Tom’s overly romantic nature.

Yes, Tom Riddle is a giant romantic, though not necessarily in the traditional sense everyone thinks of. The film “Patton” and its treatment of Patton comes to mind. Tom Riddle is a man enamored by a sense of greatness, of being remembered in this world rather than fading into oblivion, by the significance of places and times in history not only of the world but of himself. He creates an entire, grand, persona for himself because to live an ordinary life for him is to be worthy of nothing.

So, given that, of course Tom places the horcruxes in sentimental locations that have personal meaning to him.

However, it also makes them perilously easy to find and collect.

By itself, this wouldn’t spark my notice.

The ability to destroy horcruxes are not easy to come by. There’s only one basilisk and it’s by chance/Lucius fucking up that Harry gains access to the necessary basilisk venom. Using Fyendfire is an incredibly dangerous thing to do and just as likely to blow up you and the next three towns over as it is to destroy a horcrux. And if there are other means of destroying a horcrux they’re just as hard to come by or just as dangerous.

It’s not quite throwing it into the fires of Mt. Doom from which it was forged but it’s pretty damn close.

So, really, without JKR’s convenient Deus Ex Machina giving both him and Dumbledore the means to actually destroy these things, Tom Riddle’s horcruxes are pretty damn safe no matter where we put them. As we see from the locket, which Regulus manages to collect but Kreacher cannot destroy even after several decades.

However, what does spark my notice, is that the horcruxes can be collected by someone other than Tom Riddle when it appears as if they were never intended to be. What do I mean by this?

From what we see, there’s no benefit to Tom if the original horcruxes are found by anyone. He doesn’t seek them out to restore his original body, they’re just anchor points that should be hidden at all costs. So, he’ll never need a Death Eater to go collect them for him should he be indisposed (indeed, to do so would require a tremendous amount of trust in people he has very little trust in).

So, why hide them in such a way that others can access them? There are canon based options which would have prevented anyone else from reaching them. Given the existence of age lines, I imagine Tom Riddle could make some arbitrary barrier keyed only to himself. There are mokeskin pouches, such as the one Harry is given in the seventh book, which we know can only be accessed by whoever they’re keyed to. There’s the Fidelius Charm which, true requires a secret keeper which Tom would be very meh on, but options exist.

Tom Riddle could wipe the locations of his horcruxes off the face of the map. He chooses not to. Which leads me to believe that, at least on some unconscious level, he wants the horcruxes to be found.

Then we have the protections.

Specifically, I’m thinking of the locket here.

Yes, the protections are very formidable, but they’re also goddamn weird.

Rather than make the horcrux simply inaccessible, kill all those intruding, instead the intruder has to go through a very “Saw” like puzzle in which they drown themselves in despair until they finally get the locket, at which point they likely suicide by zombie.

More, there’s no hint that there’s any other way to retrieve the locket.

Backdoors in security are a very bad idea. What they do is weaken the security as a whole and, if you can take a short cut is, it means that someone who is clever enough and motivated enough can to. Dumbledore is both clever and motivated enough, and I imagine if there was a way to get the horcrux that involved not doing this ridiculous task he would have done it.

More, we’d be back to the land of Tom making sure only he can access the horcrux by requiring a password, keying it to his magical signature, or something so that no one else could get it.

Which means, that’s right, if Tom wants to get the locket he’s drinking the goddamn despair juice just like the rest of us.

What kind of a person would do any of this?

I’ve gone over this before, but I don’t think Tom Riddle’s crazy. Rather, in this case, I think he’s driven by an unbelievable amount of nihilist rage and is also quite depressed.

Tom goes to collect his horcrux, “Ah, it’s time to remember what a miserable life I’ve led and the sheer awfulness of my own existence. Good, I was starting to feel a little too happy. Let’s see if I get eaten by my undead, vengeful, victims today.”

The Events of Deathly Hallows and Tom Riddle’s Death

I think Tom Riddle’s final death in the books was suicide.

Tom takes over the Wizarding World, finally, and it’s as miserable as ever.

He’s trapped in this sham, barely functional, probably very painful body. His Death Eaters are completely out of control and for all that he wanted society to burn it’s now burning and no one’s even learned anything from this. Children in Hogwarts are being routinely tortured and have now staged a rebellion in which he’s having to slaughter them (I have reasons to believe that this is not what Tom Riddle wanted, at all, but that’s best saved for another post), and then he learns his horcruxes have all been destroyed without him even noticing.

There’s so little left of him, he has accomplished nothing, and there’s Harry Potter back from the dead yet again, gloating at him that love conquers all and Tom Riddle will never understand.

And Harry’s right, Tom Riddle will never understand, the world is meaningless and flat to him now and he finally understand that there’s no point to it. I think Tom Riddle decides he’s done. He’s just done.

He enters in a duel with Harry Potter knowing the weird nature of their wands. Now, it can be assumed he used the Elder Wand, but we know they get locked in Priori Incatatum , and that makes no damn sense with the Elder Wand (well, wandlore in general is silly, but I’m working with what JKR gave me here). So I choose to take JKR at her somewhat established canon and say that, no matter what Harry thought, Voldemort was using his original wand.

He throws out the killing curse, despite having now witnessed Harry resurrecting twice to this thing, and within two seconds it rebounds and kills him.

Voldemort’s death is a lot like this scene from the recent, terrible, 2020 live action Mulan (10/10 do not recommend). Now, we’re supposed to think that this scene is the witch saving Mulan’s life and thus showing her hope for the next generation. In actuality, the witch literally flies into an arrow she could have easily deflected from Mulan’s path. It’s a suicide that Mulan is too stupid to notice.

Tom chooses suicide in the most ridiculous, flamboyant, and easily written off manner one can and no one even notices. Instead Harry crows that he has personally defeated Voldemort, with the power of love no less, HUZZAH!

And the castle parties.

The Nature of Horcruxes

I almost don’t want to include this because it’s so... well, I’m really drifting far from canon and fandom now.

However, with horcruxes, there’s always an overriding question of why Tom is able to make so many when we don’t see anyone else with these things around (especially as it’s clear that murder doesn’t simply happen for those that now have horcruxes).

Usually, you have fic authors just sort of shrug and go, “Well, he’s that evil, I guess.” Sometimes you have them go, “No one else is crazy enough to keep going, and that’s why Voldemort’s cuckoo bananas.”

One very good explanation I’ve seen is that it’s because most people, when they murder, feel remorse immediately. The soul split happens, but they’re haunted by the murder for the rest of their life, and thus the horcrux isn’t made. Voldemort, feeling nothing when he kills anyone, is thus able to make them even for when he’s only indirectly associated with the death in question.

However, to me that never really jived philosophically.

Mostly, I simply cannot imagine that tearing apart your very soul is an act of indifference. Here’s how I see it: to do something like that to yourself, you must care, you must care beyond all imagine and human endurance. Your soul literally cannot abide it and saws itself in half, purging what you cannot stand about yourself the most.

The remorse part is, yes, remorse for the act and the victim but more to the point it is the ability to forgive and reaccept the worst part of yourself. That part of yourself that you purged and destroyed, which is nearly impossible to do and might very well destroy the fabric of who you are).

In other words, while creating a horcrux is an abominable act of hatred, it is also one of profound self-hatred.

Tom Riddle loathes himself so much that he is able to do this over and over and over again.

As Tom Riddle goes on he makes himself into less and less and less of himself until he probably doesn’t even know who he is anymore. He just knows, whatever is left of him, he loathes that too.

And then, of course, he gives up, runs into the nearest flying arrow, and dies.

TL;DR: Tom Riddle’s is a miserable existence that ended in a miserable if unintentionally hilarious manner

So the houses' common rooms all use passwords, right? (I'm assuming the Hufflepuff one does bc I don't think it's ever been confirmed) All except Ravenclaw's, which uses riddles. Why are they singled out like that?

What if all the common rooms used to have similar means to gain entry but only Ravenclaw's survived?

Hear me out on this one

When Hogwarts was founded, each of the Founders came up with a way to defend their common rooms and dorms, keeping their chosen children safe and using the traits each house prides themselves on as a means of ensuring only those chosen could enter.

Hufflepuffs, being finders, had to find something asked for by the door's guardian before being allowed entry.

Slytherins, with Salazar being so concerned about it, would have to prove their blood status (the door guardian would get to know them over time and would quiz them on their family tree).

Gryffindors, valuing boldness, would have to complete a task before being allowed in.

And Ravenclaws, of course, have to answer a riddle.

Over time and as the influence of the Founders over the castle started to wane, the door guardians began to move away from these proofs of belonging. Maybe they saw the toll it took on the students. Maybe it just didn't seem as important any more. Whatever it was, passwords and phrases became the preferred means of granting access.

Ravenclaw kept their riddles. Their students were smart enough to answer the riddle, make an impassioned plea of brain melt from studying, or prop the door open with the crumpled remains of failed essays.

If all else failed, they simply knocked. After all, that it's the logical thing to do when confronted with a closed door.

Harry Potter AU. In his final year at Hogwarts, headboy and Hufflepuff quidditch team captain XL is caught up in a scandal where he performed magic in front of muggles to protect them from dangerous, dark sorcerers who had escaped Azkaban.

After the crucial incident ends with minor injuries to the muggles and XL’s miraculous defeat of all five dark wizards–though only one of them was successfully captured–the ministry expels him from Hogwarts due to his hasty and rash decision to duel without calling for backup, exposing hundreds of muggles to magic. The normalization of advanced technology had led to an alarming spread of awareness of the wizarding world. A messy clean-up indeed.

XL’s family’s name was dragged through the mud, the once appraised pure-blooded lineage honored no more. In addition to being estranged from his parents, XL’s so-called friends left him alone. He also lost a lot of who he was in his early adolescence. Since then, he has learned that even when his intentions are good, the end result isn’t always favorable.

After being expelled, disowned, and alienated from the wizarding world at age eighteen, XL traveled the world completing various bizarre jobs in order to get by and keep busy. Over a decade later, XL chooses to take the base exam equivalent to graduating from a magic school. With this requirement completed, and his years’ worth of experience under his belt, XL is qualified to teach as a professor at a magic school.

XL is lucky that JW, as the new headmaster, decided to hire XL onto the staff, as the new herbology professor. Herbology was always XL’s favorite subject. He’s in the middle of writing a massive index of new species he observed during his twenties!

It’s been so long since XL stepped foot in Hogwarts. Funnily enough, it feels a lot like coming home, a feeling XL hasn’t had in many years. He has a week to re-familiarize himself with the school grounds and meet the other professors before the students are scheduled to arrive for the new year.

One of the tasks XL is assigned as the herbology professor is to supply the potions professor with special plants and ingredients he has access to. The potions professor is named Hua Cheng, an intriguing name if XL says so himself. Though the first two times XL searches HC out to figure out which ingredients were needed most, HC isn’t in the room.

XL ponders if he should put together a basket of goods based on his own memory of which ingredients are popular in potions and see if HC has other suggestions afterward. Instead, XL decides to leave a letter arranging a meet-up time in hopes he can converse with the potions professor in person.

The next day XL enters the potions room, a tall youth stands over a cauldron while glancing down at a thick, opened book. He wears the standard black robes, the emerald green collar symbolizing he is part of Slytherin’s house. His hair is tied up in a high ponytail. XL wonders how a student is allowed to brew potions in the classroom a few days before all the other students return to Hogwarts.

He must be a prefect, or even headboy, to gain this privilege, XL decides.

XL shuffles around a bit until the youth notices his presence.

“Hello! So sorry to interrupt. I’m looking for Hua Lao Shi,” XL greets politely with a nod of his head. The youth merely straightens up. He tilts his head without saying anything. XL figures he must be a bit confused. XL quickly introduces himself, “I’m Xie Lao Shi, your new herbology instructor.”

The Slytherin student blinks. “Nice to meet your acquaintance, Xie Lao Shi. May I ask what the subject of your meeting with Hua Lao Shi entails?”

“Ah, I simply need to discuss the supplies Hua Lao Shi needs for the start of the school year.”

“Oh, that’s very considerate of Xie Lao Shi to ask beforehand. None of the previous herbology professors did so,” the youth comments idly. He steps away from the cauldron, waving his hand over it to temporarily seal the potion. XL’s eyebrows raise, impressed at the casual display of finesse. “But it’s nearly the start of the school year. Am I correct in my assumption that Hua Lao Shi hasn’t made himself readily available for a meeting?”

XL hums good-naturedly. “I’m sure he has his reasons. He must be quite busy these days leading up to classes starting.”

The Slytherin student lifts his hands in a playful shrug, a gesture implying, “As if.” He must be really close to the potions professor to act like this behind his back.

“Do you, by chance, know where Hua Lao Shi is at the moment?” XL asks, approaching the youth.

“Probably in Slytherin’s common room. At the beginning of each year, Hua Lao Shi performs numerous charms to prevent it from being ruined by whatever disastrous activities students engage in throughout the year,” the youth answers. He gathers up a bundle of scrolls to the left of the potions book, walking around the table to stand next to XL. “I can lead Xie Lao Shi to our common room, if he wishes.”

“Yes. That would be wonderful,” XL confirms with a smile. They begin exiting the potions room. “Thank you…?”

“Xie Lao Shi can call me San Lang.”

“San Lang seems very knowledgeable and mature for his age. Am I correct in my assumption that you are headboy?” XL questions, eager to know more about this charming youth who has given him the warmest welcome to Hogwarts yet.

SL lets out a throaty chuckle, eyes briefly closing as he laughs. Next, he sets those dark eyes on XL, shining with mirth. They maintain a steady pace of winding down staircases and corridors that eventually lead down to the dungeons.

“I’m afraid Xie Lao Shi is incorrect in his assumption this time. Headboy does not suit me.”

“Hmm, I beg to differ, based on the conversations I have had with you thus far,” XL disagrees lightly. Without thinking about his next words, XL continues teasingly, “San Lang seems like the perfect character to be in charge and order others around.”

This emits another loud laugh from SL. A hint of satisfaction bubbles in XL’s chest.

When they finally arrive at their destination, SL doesn’t even need to utter a password for the passage to open up. Strange, XL thinks. SL truly must be a figure to be reckoned with.

They enter an empty common room, spotless of any disorganization. Yet, no Hua Lao Shi in sight. XL follows SL who places the scrolls on the largest table in the room, which is already packed with inked parchment.

XL’s eyes flit over the pieces of parchments, belatedly making out class instructions, plans, and assignments written out.

Wait a second…

XL snaps his eyes back to SL, who turns around while pulling out the hair tie. Long, thick waves of raven hair spill over his shoulders; a black eyepatch now covers his right eye.

“Welcome, Xie Lao Shi,” Hua Cheng says knowingly, voice notably deeper. “Shall we start our discussion about the supplies?”

Potions professor HC is also the head of Slytherin. He is considered a prodigy who has published five potion manuals that are highly regarded among the wizarding world. HC is very intimidating and direct with his words; strict with his instruction but gives credit where credit is due. And he certainly doesn’t hesitate to take away house points!

He is known to wear an eyepatch but no one knows the reason why.

To put it shortly, many of the students and staff fear him.

Because XL hasn’t kept up with the wizarding world’s gossip, he didn’t know about HC’s reputation, even less about his physical appearance! It took HC revealing his true identity with the eyepatch for XL to recognize he had been talking to the potions professor all along!

“How very sly of Hua Lao Shi to masquerade as a student this entire time,” XL says with disbelief. He is incredibly close to dissipating right then and there from the sheer embarrassment of not realizing his mistake. Perhaps the Slytherin common room has a mysterious hole that can swallow him out of sight.

“I apologize if I have offended Xie Lao Shi in any way. However, he is the one who sees me as young enough to be a student. How could I do anything but indulge him?” HC replies, not unkindly.

“Hua Cheng is indeed...shameless,” XL breathes out. He doesn’t know what to do with himself, mind and body telling him to find a place to hide!

He settles for taking a seat at the table.

“Please, continue to call me San Lang,” HC requests gently. He takes a seat next to XL, rolling out a blank piece of parchment to write out the ingredients he’ll need from XL. “‘Hua Cheng’ is too formal.”

The explanation is surely a bit faulty? Why have XL call him ‘San Lang’ when his name is actually ‘Hua Cheng?’ Do the other professors call HC ‘San Lang?’

XL clasps his hands together on the table.

“Very well. I will address you as San Lang, but only when we’re alone,” XL says, determined to remain professional in front of the students.

Wait, that was very suggestive, wasn’t it-?

“When we’re alone, may I call you Gege?” HC adds on, interrupting XL’s internal panic. The younger man pins XL with a curious gaze, staring in a way XL is not used to being stared at. XL clears his throat while looking away.

“I will allow it.”

The Hacker: Real or Not?

I decided to talk a little about my Slasher OC: The Hacker also known by his other pseudonims: Erron, Cyber Killer, ERROR 666.

The first question about any slasher is: What makes him scary?

Despite the fact that I’ve created supranatural characters like Dave Anthony and Samuel Grayson, my favorite type of scary is the one that gives you the impression that everything is real or it can be real at some point.

I think what’s really scary about the Hacker is that as his name states, he can be real. Hackers are as real as you, me and everyone who reads this. What’s not scary about a stranger than invades your privacy, because that’s what he does; stalks, gains all information about you, name, age, your location, even hack into your webcam (one of the many reasons for why I cover mine, after all Mark Zuckerberg does it, so why not us too?). Nowadays, it’s pretty easy to hack on someones phone, PC etc. with all the information on the internet (and the deep web).

Violation of privacy is the most disturbing thing ever, because we all have our secrets and the Hacker uses these secrets to get what he wants; no wonder he knows where you’ve been yesterday at 4:25 pm.

Why the internet and the virtual world?

In the 80s, most slashers were put into locations like small towns and camps (the real world), because back in those times the internet was still under constructions, and not everyone could afford computers, let alone the fact that smartphones were just a dream, but now?

We are literally living our lives on the internet. I have to ask you: How much time do you spend on the internet? Much more than in the real world, that I assure you. The internet, a perfect place to buy whatever you want, be whoever you want and of course, HUNT. That’s what the Hacker does, he is an online predator and if you take everything for granted, you might fall into his trap.

Just an urban legend?

If you are fascinated by hackers, you might known about the deep web or better say the dark web. I read a lot of forums about what really is there (not everything evil, but there are some sick shit out there) and I even surfed the deep web myself (for informational purpose only).

I took my time and wrote down below some basic ‘distubing’ stuff that there is in the dark corners of the internet.

Warning: Gore, Death, Disturbing themes. BEWARE.

I’m gonna be short on this and say that you can find inside anything you could possibly think of down from full markets that sell illegal weapons and drugs to even humans. Traffiking isn’t something unknown nowadays and dark web has plenty of it; think about it like an Amazon of Deep Web. EVERYTHING.

Going back to my character, the Hacker who sells his skills into hacking for a fat load of money, that’s what you can find on deep web: Need a Hacker to break into someones PC company or just simply your lovers phone? Hire a Hacker, there are plenty of it.

Ever seen movies with Hitmen? That’s another thing you can hire on the darkweb. Need someone to be killed or evaporated from earth? With a price of measure you can have it done, while you’re sitting with your friends eating lunch.

Illegal porn. That’s pretty basic on the deepweb, because that shit is fucked up and the visible internet will bane it imidiatley. I don’t want to go into details, because it’s a sensitive subject, but...There have been real cases where the fantasies became real. A very much real and sick to the core shit was Daisy’s Destruction. If you want more information just simply search it, but I warn you, it’s very disturbing. Other associations with gore were Violent Desires, Hurt2TheCore and No Limits Fun.

RedRoom’s.....Probably the most sickest things ever; most say it’s just urban legend, but....are we really sure?

What is a RedRoom on the Dark Web?

I’m gonna talk about it more, because that’s what my character, the Hacker, does.

Red room is the website where viewer is shown video on his demand. It generally contains explicit harassment and torture of subject by some person of evil intention. First intended viewer will send the email id to website owner. Then website owner will send them the link to pay the charges. User will pay the money and in return will get the access to enter into website. User will use that password and live cam show will be shown to the viewer where some person whose face is hidden behind the mask will show the subjects. The user will demand some action to be done with subjects and that action can be torture, cutting body parts, even torture to death. The higher the torture more the money demanded. Pretty terrifying, huh?

Now, I never tried to figure out if they are real or not, because in order to be a spectator, you have to pay up (0.1 BTC which means 925,85 euro at this very moment). Plus, it’s pretty dangerous and like other people advised; DO NOT ENTER A RED ROOM.

So, yes, the Hacker does what I stated up.

The UNKNOWN

This is a part with two cuts, one which is that us humans are fascinated by the unknown and curious, then the other part, the FEAR. We are afraid by the unknown by nature.

Remember in our childhood that we were afraid to go into the water because we didn’t know how to swim or because we didn’t know what’s deep in there?

What’s not frightening about a stranger with a creepy mask? I do say so myself that I would be scared, especially because you cannot predict what he will do. The Hacker is a very unpredictable character.

That’s one of the reasons I didn’t gave him a certain background story or a specific identity. The UNKNOWN, he can be anyone; your neighbour, the guy that’s working in the electronic shop, a guy you just passed down the streets to work? Endless possibilities.

Now the question is: Is it worth to make a horror movie with him? There are so little horror movies that include the virtual world. I will leave this question out to you to answer. Why make a movie with the Hacker? Is it gonna have an audience boost? Will he become a horror icon? So many questions...

Babysitting Butcher Chapter 52

I was sitting with Frenchie, Kimiko was going over the footage from the drones with Billy, helping him edit it with more precision and a better eye than most people would think to give her credit to have, and I was explaining the issue that I had after my chat with Grace about the chips.

“So what you’re saying,” he was squinting at me, but I could tell he wasn’t seeing ME. “Is that Ryan has trios chips, but Mallory doesn’t believe that they were placed there to track him?” I nodded, still not quite sure he was paying attention to my image. “What would be l’ objet then?” His eyes narrowed, as though it would help him grasp the answer to the same problem I had issues finding the solution for. “Chips, they are used to track, to listen, to -” his eyes widened, and then he refocused on me. “Is there someone here, in the building,” he clarified, “that knows more about tech?”

“Yes,” I’d looked up our in-house technology guru, wanting to know their name, just in case I had to tap their shoulder next. “Carrie Stavos.” I grabbed my desk phone and hit the extension I’d memorized that morning. “Stavos? Yes, this is Dr. Taylor, could you come to my office? Of course, finish that up and come up after.” I signed off with the young sounding woman and hung up. “She has to finish up with -” It was my turn to squint. “I’m sure you’d understand what she’d explained,” my lips quirked and Frenchie smirked in answer. “She’ll be here when she finishes up, in about ten minutes.” I checked my watch. “That gives me a chance to go through some emails, and you can check on those two -” I nodded toward Billy’s desk where he and Kimiko were working in almost complete silence, but their heads were close and they were both taking turns clicking and moving the mouse.

While Frenchie slid over to Billy’s side, I clicked through emails, finding one from an unknown source with a video file included. Great, fabulous, just what my day needed, more shit. First I put the email through the handy dandy backward trace, thinking that my new fan would need to learn quickly who they were dealing with and what type of fun resources I had at my fingertips. The video I sent to the security systems, they could look to see where it originated, who saved it, and then hopefully who forwarded it to me.

While those systems were running, I answered the more mundane of my correspondences. The yeses and the nos, the requests, and the denials. I had to imagine that I wouldn’t have the answers to my mystery email by the end of the day, normally anonymous emails took anywhere from forty-eight hours upward to backtrack, so I was shocked when I got the telltale ping that signaled they’d run it through the available programs and they had my answers.

Clicking open the report, I sat back as I read it. The email had originated from our office, from one of the mailroom email accounts. This account is utilized by anyone who can access the mailroom, which means literally anyone who can gain entrance into the building. The mailroom computer isn’t secure. It holds nothing classified, so needs no password to log on. Great, that’s fun.

The video, I read on, was also from our building. My office, it went on to be more precise, on the date of my hemmorage. When I nearly went nuclear and wiped out EVERYTHING. It was time stamped from the moment I swiped in that morning until an hour after I’d been rushed to the undisclosed clinic. The security person who had backtracked the feed and written this piece of the report said that only our people should have access to the feed, and only the people with security clearance of those in the video storage and above should be able to clip, edit, and share it through our systems. The clearance numbers used, however, match nothing they could find.

I sighed and sat back, somewhat surprised that Billy didn’t hightail it to my desk, but he was muttering with Frenchie about something in their footage. Why this video, I wondered? Why now?

Putting the headset on that I kept on hand, just in case I needed it for something as tasteless as this, I took a deep breath to fortify myself and clicked play.

Have you ever watched yourself nearly die? I don’t mean figuratively, but literally see a video of you come within inches of death? There are films, entire movie series that have that trope. Escaping death, only for it to continue to come for you, wanting nothing more than to make sure the balance is kept even.

As I watched the video of the day I walked into our office, so full of certainty that I’d fixed it, I’d fixed the massive fucking disaster of a personal invasion that Homelander forced on me I felt bile start to rise in my throat because of the surreal quality of it. Hearing my voice say the words that I barely recalled saying to Billy come out of my mouth. Seeing me do things that I still take for granted, the mundane day to day shit, things that I knew within moments would become things I’d pray I could do again.

Seeing Billy go for our lunch, the rolling in my stomach grew, a pain reminiscent of what I’d felt before. I knew what was coming, but to see it from THIS angle? It was as if I HAD died, and this would have been my view - what I would have seen while people rushed inside. Wait-- How had they rushed in?

I clicked back, the rush of the blood down my legs my starting point. I hadn’t made a sound, but Billy mentioned that my temperature had gotten so high that I’d set off an alarm, which alerted security. Why didn’t I hear it on the video? The alarm didn’t start until the first three people came in, faces I didn’t recognize, and none of whom should have been able to enter, since only Billy, Mallory, and I had access aside from Security override. None of this trio had security markers on, and they didn’t look all that rushed. I couldn’t hear their conversation, another redflag, since I heard every other sound, and after a gesture, the alarm FINALLY sounded and then things moved the way they should have.

“Billy?” Calm, that’s how I sounded, which would have shocked me, but by this point nothing was all that surprising. “Could you take a look at something for me?”

Getting Billy calmed down after HE watched the video wasn’t as simple. Frenchie’s eyes were wide enough to see every divot on the moon, and I was contemplating cancelling everything for the rest of the day to distract him the best way I knew how.

“Those three fuckin’ -” how his nostrils could either get so thin that NO air could possibly pass through or so wide that he could inhale ALL of the air in the free world was beyond me, but the true power was how he could do either and make me want to climb him like Mount Everest and - Damn it, Ronnie, get your head in the game. “You coulda died, and they were doin’ fuck all.”

“Actually, they were wasting time,” Frenchie offered, and I could tell he wished he hadn’t. “I meant they were possibly looking for a way to -”

“See how long it would actually take for my self destruct button to engage,” I nodded, why bother fucking lying? “Who are they?” Important question, since clearly that mattered most. “I couldn’t really see their faces, but they don’t look familiar.”

“Knew where the cameras were,” Billy grunted, pulling me onto his lap as he sat in his own chair. “Knew where they were and kept their heads down. Not amateurs. Knew they’d have to raise the alarm too, cause sooner or later, your temperature would and no one could cover that mess up.”

We were considering this newest blip in our nest of blips when the knock came to the door. Kimiko raised her eyebrow at me in question, but I just sighed. “That would be Stavos. The techie guru we asked to consult.” Pulling free of Billy, but not before giving in to a steadying kiss, just to remind one another that at least ONE part of our world was steadfast, I walked to the door to let in what I could only imagine would be MORE bad fucking news.

Carrie Stavos didn’t look like I thought she would. I had a thought that she’d be spiky haired and edgy. Instead she looked more librarian with a hint of a kindergarten teacher tossed in for fun. Glasses perched on her nose, she took in her surroundings with the ease of someone who was used to blending in with the wallpaper. Unfortunately for Carrie, I needed her to be the center of attention.

Once I had her situated in my chair, my laptop out of sight out of mind, I started with the soft balls. First with the types of chips that might be implanted in people, then on to the reasons for the chips. From there we went to more nefarious reasons for chipping people, superbeings for instance.

“Superbeings?” Her eyes widened. “You want to chip supes?”

I shook my head emphatically. “No, I most certainly do NOT want to chip supes.” Couldn’t be further from the truth. “I’m simply asking, if I found out that a particular supe was, in fact, chipped multiple times, what would the purpose aside from GPS be for those chips?”

From wide to narrow slits, thinking hard, I could tell, Carrie was working out the question I’d posed her. “I know that the Seven are chipped, for location, of course.” A tilt of confirmation and understanding on my part kept her going. “If you found that other supes were chipped, and if they had more than one?” Another tilt, and she sighed, her head shaking. “I can only think of one reason and it’s terrible.”

“Terrible?” It was Billy, leaning forward and eager, because while Ryan was his responsibility if something was terrible for a supe, he would like to hear about it.

“Yes, terrible.” Carrie looked a little green around the gills. “I’ve heard of a type of chip, I thought they were like Urban Legends, but maybe not.” A tiny sigh escaped ever as she blanched a bit. “Inhibitors.”

Now my eyes turned to slits as I tried to process this reality. That a chip could be implanted to - no, they wouldn’t have, would they? “Inhibitor?”

“If there’s more than one?” I nodded, barely seeing Carrie as I ran through the list of Ryan’s powers like a scroll. “Each chip could be specific for ONE power, in place to stop that one, hold it at bay. Inhibit the supe from accessing it.” Not training him to use his powers responsibly or control them, but to literally neuter him. I felt like throwing up. “Terrible.” She whispered and I had to concur.

Hold on, let me just shake out all the interpretative literary devices I had from my previous articles... There, much better! Welcome back to your favorite bunny—Nikki’s Tumblr blog! It feels a bit different here compared to when I am on Amino, to be honest. Yes, when I formally write without too many literary devices, my blogs smoothen like this, like it was polished with sandpaper or something. Anyway, I loosen up in order to display my love for something I’d like to offer to this world—one of those precious gems that have not been excavated in the realm of fandoms. Today, in this article, let’s enter the world of Webtoons and figure out 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙒𝙀𝘽𝙏𝙊𝙊𝙉 (𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙒𝙚𝙗𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙣𝙨) 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧!

Oh, hold on your horses! You’re asking what do I mean by Line Webtoons? My apologies for not explaining that before I bring you along this own carpet ride. To begin with this sudden class session, webtoons are webcomics that have a vertical reading format. In Korea, “manhwa” is often something you’d hear when the locals there refer to comics. These webtoons originated from South Korea, and now, they are rebranded by different companies with their hit titles. One of those brands is Naver Webtoon, and internationally, it is known as Line Webtoons. In 2019, it has now become WEBTOON, for short! Korean webtoons that are from Naver Webtoon have been officially translated into English, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Thai, Spanish, French, and German languages in the present. At the same time, all these countries of the world wide web get to also be webtoon creators, too!

Comics are a mix of art and writing in multiple panels. Though unlike those readable from right to left, or the complete opposite of that, webtoons take advantage of vertical scrolling to reveal shocking key plot points and add more aesthetic in the blooming & stunning art they provide to the audience. They don’t upload once a month or year—in WEBTOON, there’s always something to read daily! Most WEBTOON series upload once a week, depending on its creator. As a reader, you’ll surely enjoy the vast options of webtoons to choose from reading at your own pace. There are many interesting genres, art styles, character designs, pairings, story lines, and themes to look forward to. The best part is, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨, 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚! There’s a perfect story to dwell into for all kinds of people, so if you’re curious in knowing how to begin reading, let’s go ahead and jump into the app!

The first step to get started with WEBTOON is approaching its services, first! You If you haven’t encountered WEBTOON yet, you could either take a little peak behind its digital pages online. I recommend downloading the app to enjoy the WEBTOON experience to the maximum level. If your first language is not English, perhaps a more comfortable version of the app made for your location fortunately exists! Search for WEBTOON on the playstore, and you will spot the application in a flash. It is only 21 MB or megabytes big, so it is not painful to the phone storage.

However, if you want to save space, you can always take the other route and access the WEBTOON site here. You can search for WEBTOON on your device’s browser, and the link you see immediately will lead you to the destination you desire to land onto. The site is mostly used by personal computer users and those who cannot download the app. It functions the same way as the app, but not all the features, events, and other cool activities can be done here. So, I still suggest to head over to your device’s playstore to get the application!

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓶: 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻-𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗘𝗕𝗧𝗢𝗢𝗡 𝗮𝗽𝗽.

Any app would instruct the user to create an account to use its services. For WEBTOON though, this is very worth it, for it gives you a chance to use your account to comment on WEBTOON episodes you adore, or subscribe to the series you want to follow and support. You can create an account using your email address and the password to access it personally. Just the same as any other process in signing-up for an account, you will type your own username. You could also your very own Facebook, Twitter, Google, or LINE account to enter, and your name on the site you’ve chosen to log-on with will become your name on WEBTOON.

It is editable, so don’t worry if your username so happened to be humiliating, and you absolutely must change it! Though, if you don’t want to create an account just yet, users can view webtoons with a press of a finger without signing up for anything, if you’d press the return key on your phone or if you’re browsing on the site. Once you submit your approval that you’ve read and understood the Terms of Use & Privacy Policy of WEBTOON, you can finally set foot on the real fun of webtoons!

Okay, do not get confused! We’ll get to the rest of the areas of the app in a little bit! There’s a lot of things to do, now that we’ve finally arrived on WEBTOON platform itself. Though before being hyped at the things you are seeing right now, I’d like you to scroll down to the bottom of this “For You” section, and dig up the “Find your series” questionnaire to answer it. This is so that you can have an idea of what to expect here on WEBTOON, as well as what to read first. This is a questionnaire that will also introduce you to stories that you’d enjoy, without getting totally overwhelmed with content to stretch out into. No pressure in choosing, it will not affect how your account is set-up! Don’t worry about the results either. Answer as natural and honest as you can! This step is only applicable to those who are on the WEBTOON application. It is also optional to the reader, specifically if they are already used to reading webcomics and know what to expect.

Once you enter, it’d ask what are the genres you like. There is horror, comedy, thriller, fantasy, drama, romance, superhero, slice of life, action, and sci-fi. To clarify, slice of life does not literally mean a splitted life! It is a genre for stories that showcase the everyday life of a person, that are either relatable or engaging to read about. Choose as many genres as you want—it’s totally fine to check everything, or to choose one specific genre. Then, you can choose which art styles you prefer from the choices you see in front of your screen. Again, don’t worry about picking art styles—this is not a critical survey! Go ahead and pick many art styles you find pleasing to the eye. Then, you’ll get a list of webtoons recommended to you by the WEBTOON management! Easy, right?

You can take note of these titles given to you, or you can press on the webtoons you find interest in, and you will be taken to the webtoon’s contents in a jifty. That’s where you can read the description of the title’s plot, and you can instantly start reading if it strummed your heartstrings. You can continue discovering more stories to read from here, since the freedom is yours. Even so, there are still parts of the application to discuss that may give you an extra hand later on. If you’re still following me, you may exit the questionnaire that you entered into a while ago. Now, if you scroll up, we’re back seeing graphics moving sideways at the front page. Oh, did you something catch your eye there? These graphics that WEBTOON fans usually call as “banners” (or, for me, personally—anyway,) are another way to gain interest in choosing stories to read. Long story short, when I became a WEBTOON reader, my all-time favorite webcomic from WEBTOON was first shown to me on a banner. (A very epic one, too!) Most of the webtoons shown here are in the “Originals” tab! From “For You,” press the Originals tab next. These are the tenths of webtoons that you can also read here on WEBTOON. The image is just one section of that. If you can observe, there are the seven days of the week stated at the top of these webtoons, under the word, “Daily.” You might be asking why is this section called, “Originals.” All these webtoons found under this tab are in partnership with the WEBTOON management, and these stories release new episodes weekly!

That simply means that the creators of these webtoons are working together with WEBTOON to share their stories with us, and what’s the best thing? They get to tell their stories, while fulfilling their dream full-time job as a paid webcomic creator! Their work is now known as “WEBTOON ORIGINALs,” though before, they used to be “Featured Webtoons.” Everyday, various webtoons of different genres update with new parts to continue the story from where they left off previously, so there’s definitely something to look forward to from Mondays to Sundays. There are also more choices here than those in the questionnaire, so if you weren’t contented with what you got from answering questions, you can also come here to pick out stories. There are also webtoons under “Completed,” and we’ll get to those in a bit. If you’d ask me what I usually do on Originals, I read everything in general, so I never run out of things to read, but I’m more fond of fantasy genres. You can also choose webtoons from all days of the week, so you can keep reading something everyday before going to school or work, or perhaps, when you’re about to sleep.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓹: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀” 𝘁𝗮𝗯.

Now, there must be another question in your head. “How are these webcomic creators chosen to be featured, or have their work included under WEBTOON ORIGINALs?” There are a couple of ways, though, we’ll focus on this canvas of ideas for this article. Usually, creators are discovered on the fan submissions area of the application. Yes, you heard me right! If you are someone who loves drawing comics as well, then you can give this opportunity a shot and meet other aspiring creators here on “Canvas!” So, let’s move from the “Originals” tab and head straight into the “Canvas” section. The webtoons here are under the word, “Spotlight.” It’s simply because these webtoons are uploaded by other webcomic creators who are not affiliated by WEBTOON, yet. So, you could say that this is the wider scope of webtoons to look through. The best thing about “Canvas” which used to be “Discover,” is the fact that we can support these writers and/or artists by reading their stories.

WEBTOON is a platform perfect for people to test the waves of being a webcomic creator. At the same time, they are given the chance to gain a community of a readers that you could also be a part of! However, since these webtoons labeled as “CANVAS WEBTOONs,” are not fully paid by WEBTOON, there is no guarantee that they’ll upload episodes every week. They are free to upload on their own running schedule, but in return, they are also free to create any story they like, as long as it follows the WEBTOON guidelines. Just a brief heads-up, you must have a computer or laptop, in order to upload your own webcomic on WEBTOON. For us readers, it’s a big chance for us to find stories we’ll fall in love with—the one that will make us invested and devoted to how the story continues. If you give the CANVAS WEBTOON more support, who knows? You might be a part of their life accomplishment journey to doing what they love for a living. Very heartwarming, I see.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓺: 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

We’ve already seen all the webtoons that the app has to offer to us. Despite that, there’s a chance that you still don’t know what stories pique the elements you like in a plot. Now that you know that there are more webtoons to search for on the WEBTOON app, you might need a guide or factor to know what’s the best story to try out. This is why the rankings and genre sections exist on the app! You can view the rankings of WEBTOON ORIGINALs and CANVAS WEBTOONs in their respective tabs. For ORIGINALs, you can click on the badge-like icon to the top right, while in CANVAS, you can see the rankings immediately. If you want to see the complete rankings list for CANVAS WEBTOONs, pressing the arrow at the right side of the rankings preview will do the trick! This step is for users who cannot decide based on what gem of a webtoon preview has caught their attention. If you'd like to find out what webtoons are popular overall, or in their corresponding genres, be sure to use this feature to weigh the odds. We are people who are influenced by whatever is loved by many, after all.

If ten genres weren't enough choices during the questionnaire, well, thankfully there is more to play with! In the genre sections of both types of webtoons on WEBTOON, which you can see alongside the rankings, you can also view webtoons listed under the supernatural, mystery, sports, historical, heartwarming, and informative genres! So, in total, there are 16 genres to step into, and that's a plenty! In that said area, you can tell which genres have the best stories based on how many people read each webtoon. You can also sort these webtoons by interests, likes, or date. Just press the "Genres" button next to the "Daily" or "Spotlight" text on either tabs. The "sorting the webtoons by interests" option would depend on what your account has read, so far. These features are really handy to introduce to you new webtoons to take your eyes on or pay attention to.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓻: 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗠𝘆” 𝘁𝗮𝗯.

I suppose you've already chosen a webtoon to read, or maybe you're already into collecting webtoon titles to remember reading. Regardless, let's make things a little easier. You'd need your account, first! If you haven't created one yet, head to the log-in page and go back to Step No. 2. Catch up here when you're done, alright? If you’re already here, let me take you a stroll around this “My” tab. This section has list of features that are for the account’s convenience and personalization. It tells you what webtoons episodes have you recently read, downloaded, commented, and unlocked. It also states what webtoons have you subscribed to. Oh, yes, you can do all these things for your favorite stories on WEBTOON! To try that out, go to your chosen webtoon to read. As a reader, you are given the chance to rate the webtoon from 1 to 10—whether it is an ORIGINAL or CANVAS-type. That also makes heads turn away or stare closer at the stories, to see if they are worthy of their time.

Just like how subscriptions work on Youtube or any other platform, subscribing to a webtoon with your account means that you’ll get notifications whenever it uploads. It’s also easier to access subscribed webtoons through the “My” tab, instead of continously searching for your favorite stories all over the application or site as if you’re in a never-ending maze. You can track down the episodes you’ve downloaded for offline use as well, which comes in great situations where wifi is not available. Be aware that downloaded episodes will remain on your account for 30 days only, however. After 30 days, you may download the episodes again. Commenting on episodes can give you interaction with other readers’ ideas—those reactions, arguments, discussions, and, well! You could even talk about romantic pairing wars and all that’s fizzling in the premise of the story. With this section of the app, your account will be able to be fit and active, while it gives access to more parts of WEBTOON—including the possession of fast pass coins to unlock episodes for early reading! Wait a minute. Why must we, and how do we do that?

Fast pass on WEBTOON allows you to read episodes before they are publicly released. In other words, you can gain early access to your most awaited ORIGINAL WEBTOONs’ episodes, especially when they get on that gripping cliffhanger that makes you want to go crazy with what happens next! The question is, how can we use fast pass? We can do that with coins called, “fast pass coins.” This in-app currency will permit you to avail one fast pass episode every five coins. In order to get coins, however, there is real money transactions involved. Though, do not fret, because you do not need to spend a dime or a single peso over buying fast pass episodes! WEBTOON offers users to gain five or more fast pass coins through events in the app.

These vary from having to log-in in 7 days, or read similarly themed webtoons that are featured per event. It’s free to do, though, they do not come by all the time—events do not run forever, after all. So, take on the challenge when it arrives, and get yourself some fast pass episodes to enjoy! One benefit in taking part in fast pass coins events is reading new stories that you’ve never tried peaking into before, because who knows when will it become your top webtoon choice in the future? Take it for me—one webtoon became my favorite when the first fast pass coins event entitled, “Climb the Tower challenge,” occured. I participated and had climbed 100 episodes, and now here I am chilling with floors and betrayal!

If you haven’t asked, all fast pass coins given to each webtoon will have a part of its value given to the creators of the said stories. In other words, it’s like directly supporting the artists, writers, and creators of the stories you love! This step can only be done to ORIGINAL WEBTOONs. CANVAS WEBTOONs do not have fast pass, though its creators can provide Patreon accounts where fans can donate or give thanks for their eloquent and awesome stories to tell.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 ⓽: 𝗗𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.

Remember when I mentioned “completed” webtoons prior to this step? It’s interesting that there also webtoons that have ended, so there is a section for WEBTOON ORIGINALs that have ended in the “Originals” tab. Here, you can still binge-read completed webtoons for as many times you want to, and you can also gain a collection of read finished webtoons on your proud wall. The satisfaction is there when you finish a story—but, wait a minute. We are familiar with fast pass, now, what’s up with this daily pass? For some completed webtoons, they are readable with the daily pass feature. This makes a webtoon’s episodes first episode public for reading, but the twist is, to read the next episodes, you must come back everyday to continue. Episodes in the middle until the end of the story are locked, and can only be carried on if you’ve lended a daily pass entry for it to be opened for a limited time. Then, you can access the next episodes in the following days. Tedious as it may be, you could also pay for fast pass coins to read these specific completed webtoons quicker.

However, if your route is free reading, it is also a fulfilling experience to follow a story as if it was still uploading everyday, instead of reading it in one sitting. This is the patience, yet satisfaction, that can be acquired from daily pass. That is also the goal of WEBTOON for implementing such a feature to their application. You don’t have to pay for anything if you don’t want to speed up your time in reading. This step is definitely for you, if you’re already reading ongoing webtoons, but want to find more stories in the completed section. Trust me, the stories we got here with the daily pass feature were real hits back in the day—somehow, the dust on their covers will be swept away when you touch it. It’s worth it, so why not give it a shot? I heard that one completed webtoon here was recently adaptated into an anime, another has been published physically, while the other was given a live-action K-drama on Netflix! Let’s see if you can figure out which stories these are!
