Would you ever try Fear Factor for one million dollars? Why or why not? Yes. It would make for hilarious stories for get-togethers and I think that winning a million dollars that I could use up for the rest of my life doing some dumb dares for a few hours would be worth it. If you have a camera, when do you use flash? Only if it’s dim. I don’t like the effect that flash gives. What would you do with eighty-three crazy straws? Find an aunt or uncle with a kid who’s having a birthday party soon so they can use the straws as giveaways or something. If you use hair spray, what brand do you use the most? I don’t.  Is Catcher in the Rye in your library by any chance? It’s probably in another college’s library, most likely our college for the arts and letters. There’s no reason for it to be in a mass communication library.
What if there was no such thing as the word 'one'? Then that would imply that we have/have to have plurals of everything, which just sounds a bit bizarre to me.
What do you have automatic sympathy for? The 11,000 employees of the country’s biggest broadcasting network that was recently officially shut down by our – surprise surprise – government. These are people who weren’t even involved in the network’s franchise renewal status (which was/is the main issue), people who have families, people who relied on these jobs to get by during a worldwide pandemic, people who loved their jobs, people who found family in these jobs, It’s absolutely crazy how people can defend their stance against the network and justify the loss of 11,000 jobs. What is a cool disposable object? I don’t know who looks at disposable objects and thinks they’re ‘cool,’ but the first thing I thought of was my vape pen of choice, which are disposable. It has enough puffs to last several months with me so it’s more convenient for me to keep buying them than spending a large amount on a refillable one. Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan? Why? Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire is more nostalgic to me; I used to watch it nearly everyday. I never watched Lindsay’s movies other than Herbie. What do you think of the actor Michael Cera? No opinion but I remember the time when he was often used on 9Gag memes. Simpler times lol. Anyway, I haven’t seen any of his movies. What is the best thing about a Barbie doll? I think it’s really fun how they’ve come up with a bazillion outfits for Barbies and Kens. And different versions too – as far as I know there’s been a Filipino Barbie for a while :) What is something you'd say in your will? If I passed any time soon I’d like to include some things about my dogs and how they’re supposed to be taken care of. If we’re talking about what I’m putting in my will if I ever reach like 80, I just wanna make sure every person who’s been in my life and stayed for a bit is mentioned and thanked and I wanna make the list as expansive as I possibly can at that age. Idk, I’ve always been sentimental. Any thoughts on fake abortion clinics? What??? I don’t know what those are and what they do, but they sound awful. What was a username you'd thought wouldn't be taken but was taken? I’ve tried using my full name as a username in a few websites and seen them being taken. My first and last names don’t make a common pair, so I’ve always found it surprising. Cherry or peanut ice cream? Peanut. Not gonna lie, it’s an unusual flavor – but Asians kinda put peanuts on everything heh. What is your dream cellphone? Why? Whatever new phone Apple puts out because unfortunately I buy into toxic consumerist shit like that lol Would you rather be watching The Bachelor or The Bachelorette? Neither. From one to ten, how big of a movie buff are you? I’d give myself an 8. I’ve seen my fair share of movies and I can honestly say that my favorite films are not cliche picks, but I’ve also yet to see a bunch of classics that other ~movie buffs~ hail as being excellent movies like Taxi Driver, Silence of the Lambs, Rocky, American Psycho, etc. I also haven’t been watching movies as much as I used to, which takes down another point for me. Who is a celebrity you think will never get into trouble? The Irwin kids. I wouldn’t call them celebrities per se though; they’re in the spotlight for the most wholesome reasons. I’ve seen every segment Robert Irwin has had on Jimmy Fallon and it’s amazingly precious. What is an important holiday to you? Why? Probably the EDSA Anniversary because without it we’d still be under a dictatorship. Name a catty girl you really dislike. I wouldn’t call anyone I know that. What is a museum you would like to go to? The top 3 museums that I would love to visit are the Anne Frank House, the Met, and the Art Institute of Chicago. And wherever Monet’s paintings are, because he’s my favorite artist. Personally, do you look better with short hair or long hair? Short. Long, frizzy hair does not look good on me and on anyone else. What was the reason why you last blocked a person from your IM? He was a stranger who hit on me. I added him back only because we had a considerable amount of mutual friends and I thought that maybe he used to be a classmate or something, but he messaged me some shit that he had probably copy-pasted to 700 other girls saying like ‘hey do you mind if you and I talk? I find you really pretty’ like six seconds after adding him back. It was so fucking creepy and I never blocked someone so quickly. I was already in a foul mood that night so I also showed the brief interaction to Gab and I gave her freedom to curse the shit out of the guy if she wanted to. What is a cliche thing that happens a lot in anime? I don’t like anime and have never watched it. What are your views on the cartoon show Invader Zim? I’ve never seen that either. If you have some, what is tonight's homework about? I don’t have homework anymore. If you have one, what is your favorite sushi flavour? Cream cheese salmon rolls from a local place called Torch. What is the first thing you think of when I say 'Jack'? Rose. Do you understand JavaScript coding? A teeny bit, thanks to the theme customizations I used to do on Tumblr when I was 14. What would you do if you found a gun in your best friend's bedroom? Confront them, and maybe even scold them. I definitely would be angry. Not even just because it could mean they’re suicidal, but because I don’t believe in guns. What do you call your grandparents? I call both sets Lolo and Lola. When I say 'Go', you say: I just remember the song Green Light by Beyoncé because the chorus on that is her screaming ‘Go.’ What colour do you usually paint your nails? I never paint them. They’re pretty, but I never saw them as a necessity. What would be a cool earring design? People come up with cool designs all the time now though. I’m completely sure there are a million versions of this now but I would love sriracha sauce earrings haha. What do you think of raccoons? No opinion as I’ve never encountered them. Any thoughts on the actor Paul Rudd? NEVER AGES Who is the better liar: your mother or your best friend? Mom. Gab will lie to me sometimes but I can always tell. Are breast implants something you'd consider? Why or why not? I considered it when I was a teenager because people used to pick on me for being flat-chested, as if I had a choice as to what size my body would end up being. Also, flat chests were the butt of so many jokes in the early 2010s so it made me insecure for a very long time. Nowadays the environment is a lot nicer and I’m seeing many flat-chest positivity posts (if that’s even a thing) so I’ve changed my mind about implants.  Besides nightmares, what is the scariest thing about sleeping? Sleep paralysis. You can wake up from nightmares. Do you find the phrase 'nom nom nom' annoying? Not as much as ‘rawr’ annoys me. Do you look better with red lipstick or black lipstick? I look good in neither but I would go with red. When was the last time you had chocolate milk? Oooooh it’s been a while :( I feel like that’s something people have to start selling more, honestly. I don’t see chocolate milk being sold other than at the grocery or convenience stores and ugh, I just want more restaurants to add it on their menus lol. That being said, the last time I had it was in January, during a journalism workshop that we hosted in a school in Marikina. The teachers offered us that and a Fudgee Bar as thank-you snacks :)

Moth Work Intro + False Idol | Writing Update
Hey People of Earth!
Today I thought I’d do a writing update on a project I’ve mentioned a lot in my vlogs but haven’t mentioned as of yet on here! This is a personal ‘passion project’ that I’ve been picking away at since January and have recently taken on as my transition project from Rewired to my next book.
Tumblr media
So yee! MOTH WORK (or ‘boys on a boat’ for those who keep up with the vlogs lols) has been my current project for the last few weeks since finishing REWIRED. I didn’t really mean to expand it as much as I have as it simply started off as a spinoff story of my boys Lonan and Harrison which I write every few months when I’m having a breakdown and need something to cheer me up. :-)
I’ve mentioned a few of these stories in the past (like Fishbowl and Mandarin), though this story is a bit different, as I’ve expanded it quite a lot more than I intended to! If you aren’t super caught up with Rewired, I’d definitely scroll through a few of my last updates so this one will make more sense!
What’s it about?
Moth Work is a FOSTERED spinoff story following Lonan and Harrison (dumb+dumber) at the peak of their relationship. I *was saying* that the plot went loosely as follows: after finding a photograph of a woman in Lonan’s father’s dark room, they set out to find her, HOWEVER, because I never stick to plans, I have yet to follow through with this main plot thread, lol. Vaguely, I’d just say the most important part of this story is their relationship at its most fragile because who is plot I don’t know her.
Moth Work follows the events after REWIRED, and is a bit of a bridge between it and the next book. This makes it kind of hard to explain because a) it’s in a different POV, and b) context, but hopefully that makes sense! In essence: Lonan + Harrison’s relationship is big sad and Harrison tries to make it less big sad and it gets even more big sad.
I’ll share a very quick profile of both of the boys so there’s some context for the following excerpts I’ll share!
Harrison
My boy
Generally very outgoing, tho around Lonan this fizzles. Only wants the best for Lonan despite their history. He’s the ‘main’ narrator of the piece (third limited to him though I’m guilty of head hopping lol), so the work has a softer tone than I’m used to. Though Harrison tries to be a Macho Man, around Lonan he’s most himself--mellow, a lil stupidly romantic, and vulnerable.
Lonan
My problematic son/probably should be cancelled
The “issue” in the relationship loool. He’s emotionally immature and lacks accountability, but because of his past, lacks the ability to recognize these faults and work on them. Because of this, he’s fundamentally stayed the same for the last few works he’s been in (if not gotten worse). Lonan requires a lot of emotional assistance, though he isn’t self-aware enough to recognize this. This is often the cause of much conflict.
Conception:
Like I mentioned, I often write short spinoff stories following these boys because it’s a safe happy place for when I’m feeling stressed. This is basically how this piece started, though I’ve continued it for different reasons which I’ll get into. I don’t remember how the first scene was brainstormed, but I do know when I started writing this a few months ago, I wanted it to be a lot longer than my previous stories--a place where I could just dump my writing, even when it wasn’t good. I think I did this to cope with the stress of my writing class honestly, lol, I think I needed a break from ‘serious’ writing AKA a place I could just goof off and have some fun.
The writing bit:
Writing this story has been a bit inconsistent. I’ve been drafting it in little pieces since the beginning of the year, and only recently picked it up as more of a ‘full-time’ work. This is subject to change depending on whether or not I get more of book 7 done. I’ve gone from writing 20 words a day to 0 to 1000--there’s really no consistency with the drafting process here.
I have recently decided that I’ll most likely expand this into either a novella or novel itself because there is literally so much tea left to explore and it’s surpassed 10k words. Drafting Moth Work has been so helpful in easing me back into the world of FOSTERED and piecing together the huge time gap from the end of book 6 to the start of book 7. I’ve been a bit anxious to really dive into book 7 for the fear of the unknown, so inching myself closer to that timeline through this project has been very helpful!
The editing bit:
I recently did an edit around the line level for this entire piece (it’s about 12k words right now) because a) it really needed it b) I was losing steam/starting to get embarrassed and c) I needed a refresher of what had happened because je suis tres forgetful. This edit made me feel so much better about the project. It initially started off as a work where the writing didn’t actually matter and this mentality was working until I got so embarrassed of the prose I found it difficult to read through old scenes to refresh myself and thus couldn’t productively draft.
This project isn’t written exactly in my usual style--it’s pretty stripped back and actually reminds me a lot of how my style would’ve been in book 3 had I been a better writer four years ago lol. I think the looser style works for the voice/the story itself but I def wouldn’t categorize this as litfic (what I usually write). Although the prose isn’t very complex, it took me a really long time to get comfortable enough to edit?? But once I got into the rhythm of it a few days ago, I completed the edit fairly quickly, and I’m 100% feeling better about the project overall! Though the prose is still not my top priority I’m not as embarrassed of it currently lols.
I also divided the project into chapters because it was getting pretty long to just be one mass of text. I currently have 3 chapters. This update will cover chapter 1.
Playlist:
Yo this is literally the best part of writing this project, lol, I get to listen to so much different music?? I’ve made a comprehensive playlist for this story with a character by character breakdown (if anyone wants to see that/highlights, let me know!). This playlist pulls from every song from my library, so we span genres and artists like crazy. Nothing But Thieves has been the primary artist for this story (specifically their self-titled album). These songs (all NBT oop) are the most relevant if you want to get the general tone lol (anything with a star has explicitly inspired the project):
Excuse Me*
Honey Whiskey*
Tempt You (Evocatio)*
If I Get High (II)
Gods
Lover, Please Stay*
I Was Just A Kid*
Get Better
Hell, Yeah*
Afterlife
Reset Me
Particles
Sorry
Number 13
Excerpts:
I don’t have *many* because prose hasn’t really been a top priority for this project, but I’ll try to include at least one per scene.
Tumblr media
This is one of the opening paragraphs from chapter one which I’ve titled ‘False Idol’. In short, the chapter follows the boys first attempting to destroy the dark room and then getting distracted and eventually not pulling through after Harrison finds a picture of Ominous Lady.
The chapter’s chronology is wild so we can break it up as follows:
Scene A
The boys enter the dark room with the intention of burning it down
Harrison reaches for his lighter and drops it which prompts him to find the photograph of Ominous Lady
Him and Lonan mildly argue about Ominous Lady until Lonan takes it too seriously and throws a tantrum :-DD
Scene B
Not really a full scene, just a bridge between scene A and C.
Harrison has been waiting for Lonan to return to their campsite for the entire day and he decides to at the very last moment
“hey so i’m unable to apologize for anything but also! cigarette! let’s share it! lungs!”
Scene C
The boys exercising their canoeing skills
This leads us to our first “beat”.
Lonan interrupts Harrison’s peaceful evening by having a mild crisis
This takes place right after the events of Lolita, Lolita (chapter 16 of REWIRED). We then jump back to the fictive present.
This alternates like 5 more times lol then the chapter is done!
The following excerpt describes their entry into the dark room. Don’t know how smart it is to be smoking in a room full of highly flammable material but we out here.
I don’t think she’s particularly special but I also don’t hate her so!! hoping an aesthetic photo will make it read better :’)) I ! don’t ! think ! it does ! but !
Tumblr media
Harrison shoulders the door first, traps it open with the clip of his boot. Dust and streaks of light rake behind him as he pushes through cardboard boxes, mountains of photo paper on the ground. Lonan follows silently, still wearing Harrison’s jacket. Trails of smoke from his cigarette catch in the negatives hanging by the clothespins, chemical peel between the layers of ink. In one hand he tends to his cigarette, and in the next, lugs in the canister of gasoline they found in the cabin’s cellar. As Harrison fumbles for his flashlight, Lonan sets it down by the table so it sloshes like the Pacific.
This is a bit of when Harrison finds the photograph of Ominous Lady:
Tumblr media
He turns the photograph over, and shines the flashlight on it. It’s scratched and developed wrong, little bits of orange obscuring the woman’s face, but it’s very much a woman. A dark bob and bangs in her eyes, jewelry hanging from her septum. Sunshades enough to reflect the European street behind her. The discreet jet of ink on her skin, blues and greens peeking out from under her sleeve. Izzy, he recognizes. Lonan’s mother.
Nudging Lonan with an elbow, “I didn’t know your mom has tattoos.”
Lonan takes the photograph cautiously, holding it by the corners like it’ll burn him. His brow trembles, but it takes him only seconds to say, “That’s not my mom.” He takes the flashlight from Harrison and examines it closer, fingers nimble and tracing the edges. In the grey light of the dark room, he looks nullified. Just a monochromatic hum of chromosomes and skin.
that’s not my MOM
After the boys find the photograph, Lonan gets triggered at Harrison’s suggestion to find the woman (he presumes her to be someone involved with his father) and promptly has a tantrum and exits. This leads us into the next scene where the boys! actually! get! on! boat! In this scene Lonan tries to say sorry for his tantrum by offering Harrison a cigarette (lol) and because Harrison is hopelessly romantic and also hopelessly dumb, says yeeeees sir! They go for a canoe ride on the water. Thought it was going to be sweet, ended up being a shitstorm but!
This paragraph is kind of toast but:
The canoe isn’t hard to get into the water. After a few nudges from the dock into the slow dip of tide, it stabilizes easily. Harrison is convinced it will capsize but Lonan knows it won’t. They take one ore each, and ignore the life jackets at the back of the shed.
The moon is large and mesmerizing. As Harrison and Lonan take turns pushing the canoe into the water, mast first, then its entire belly, it colours them silver. Lonan’s protected the cigarette in the pocket of his shirt. Harrison stares at its faint outline stretched under the fabric. Lonan steps into the canoe first, rocking with the current, and extends a hand for Harrison. He pulls him in and they row until the cabin is the size of a fingernail, the wave steady and dense. Each cut of the paddle feels like plunging a scalpel into flesh and Harrison watches Lonan do it easily. In the distance, the cabin doesn’t look so menacing. Reeve has left the lamp on by the loft, and it glimmers back like an eyeball, effervescent and tiny. Nothing but a reflective penny in the distance.
Here’s some Harrison being lame:
Tumblr media
The water laps at the base of the canoe, and Ris reaches over and touches it like it’s holy. He makes the sign of the cross and it feels perverse, cold water dripping from forehead to chin.
For a while it’s quiet. Just the distant hum of crickets, the slash of the paddle, and the off-chance flash of something in the distance; an animal, a flashlight. Ris tries not to think about Lonan’s dad, like a dead man slithering through the water, following their boat. He picks at a saltine, sucks it between his tongue meditatively. Against the sky, Lonan is backlit and lovely and flecks of his hair peek up from around the jacket’s collar. Harrison wonders if as a child, everyone said he looked just like his father.
On top of lacking accountability, Lonan is also a professional canoeist so he takes over while Harrison eats saltines and reminisces about an encounter they had weeks prior. This leads into the solid chunk of backstory that I weirdly jump in an out of for the entire chapter. :)
Backstory consists of drunk Lonan having a crisis while Harrison tries to have a peaceful evening of taping up his drawings to his bedroom ceiling. The following excerpt describes the moment right after Lonan enters the room.
Harrison’s lips secured around his cigarette, his hand mid-air with packing tape and line drawings of the moon. A tinny country song dribbled through the radio. The minute-meal he’d heat up in the microwave lying forgotten and cold on his desk. Harrison set the pile of drawings down and turned off the music.
“Emily left?” Lonan asked. He kept his face upward, stared clumsily at the ceiling. Harrison watched his eyes trace the new drawings, following the uncalculated pattern.
This paragraph is made up of 5 similes and this is the only reason I’m sharing it :)))):
Lonan has stopped paddling. The canoe sits in the middle of the lake, lifeless, like a bone in the water. He’s turned so Harrison can see him in profile, and Ris can’t tell if it’s relieving or worrying to see his face. Lonan’s jaw is taut, like there are words he wants to say there but can’t. Filling up the hollow bone. He blinks slowly, like he’s trying to re-centre himself, his chest quivering with breaths meant to steady him. The water laps at the base of the canoe, whirling. Dark hair tangles down his cheeks like the fingers of a poltergeist.
I think that’s a pretty good way to end this post lol! How many similes have you put in one paragraph? What’s your record lol this is probably mine!
Hope y’all enjoy the intro to MOTH WORK. I have two other chapters already written which I’ll update on in a separate post! For now I hope you like this more laid back project, let me know what you think!

Concept: Meraki (v.) To do something with soul, creativity or love; to put something of yourself into your work. This something I've been wanting to write for years but recently I've been unable to shake from my head so I’ve started planning it out properly. The basic idea is that after Naru goes back to England, Mai takes up singing and becomes a star big enough to go over to England. It's been done a couple times in this fandom but I want to put my own spin on the trope.

Hyper-graphic Catharsis
Concept: Unlike the above trope, this fic focuses on Mai as a song writer, as opposed to a solo artist. Basically, Mai starts writing songs based on the psychic dreams that she keeps having even after Naru is gone. Bou-san finds them and says that they fit the vibe his band is going for and asks to use them. They end up hitting it big time and make it overseas where they see Naru and Lin again. The “where” for where they end up in a little up in the end and this one is really in the early early stages.

Nepenthe
Concept: Nepenthe (n.) Something that makes you forget grief or suffering. What if Yasu and Mai's families were family friends and so when her mother passed away, she was taken in by Yasu's family. How would they go about meeting Naru and the rest of SPR? This thought came about when I was thinking about how much I adore the concept of Mai and Yasu as best friends and I thought about how I can see his mother doting on Mai, his younger best friend who had no-one else to rely on.

Eccedentesiast
Concept: Eccedentesiast (n.) Someone who hides pain behind a smile. Mai's father was a killer. Some of her earliest memories are of watching people enter her home and never seeing them leave. When a case begins to get too close for Mai's comfort how will she react? Will she trust the team with the information on her past that no-one else knows or will she keep on pretending.

Concept: Idea born from a tumblr post; Mai and Naru meet in this theatre turned bookstore - Naru’s secretly investigating the ghost under the radar with a team (since it’s not the type of place where you can just “stop” for any period of time) and Mai is an exchange student of something who he keeps bumping into? Maybe she even makes friends with the ghost haunting this place and doesn’t realise it?

Concept: Adapted from a tumblr post; I can just see Mai needing to make money, so she braves the cemetery and works hard. Messages from Afar
Concept: When Mai starts highschool, she starts having her "dreams". She has no idea what they are, and honestly they freak her out, so she reads up about how to deal with that and finds out that writing things down can sometimes help with that sort of thing. So, she starts recording them in the form of stories on blogs. At some point, Naru stumbles across them and recognises that, oddly enough, some of those dreams would fit as perfect pieces of information he's never uncovered in some past cases, and upon noting the dates, realises they fit into his timeline perfectly. So he get's curious and reaches out to speak with her about where her ideas come from, and tries to subtly find out more. Meanwhile, Mai is just curious about this internet (friend?) man she's met that seems very smart, very irritating, and super intriguing.

However after four months of a weekly poker night and the fifth time this happens, they start to wonder... Just a crack style idea i've had in my mind. I don't often plan out One-shots but I though that this could be something fun for a change of pace and I can definitely see Ed doing this and when they figure out he's been playing them this whole time, he can express his disappointment at how long it took, pointing out that the was a genius and probability was hardly Aeurogian alchemy.

FLAC To MP3 Converter
Although there a ton of different audio codecs out there, many media units akin to iPods, smartphones and tablets, and desktop music gamers like Windows Media Player and iTunes are usually suitable with only some particular ones. After the conversion, it is possible for you to to find the MP3 files within the folder that you just specified earlier. In case you own a Community Connected Storage (NAS) gadget, LAPTOP or perhaps a telephone you can serve FLAC information to any number of DLNA for media streamers-what does all of it imply? in your AV system including TVs , Roku packing containers, receivers and extra. If the gadget connects to the internet, it is almost definitely to also support DLNA, and although FLAC isn't formally a part of the DLNA specification , it usually comes alongside for the trip anyway. It is a guide on learn how to convert YouTube to MP3 for macOS Sierra, I would provide you with evaluation on 3 free online YouTube to MP3 converter tools, and train you learn how to download and convert YouTube to MP3 with the simplest steps. ONLY an honest degree?! As compared to what? Lossless means exactly that, no loss to high quality. FLAC gives one of the best (similar) degree as the original content material. I would not trust to you to change my screensaver settings. Spend even a bit time on audiophile boards, and you may see some intense combating about whether or not VBR is CBR is better (or whether it even issues). To keep issues easy, choose CBR and set the bitrate to 320 kbps. This should offer you nice sound high quality, although the file sizes will not be as small. Perhaps it comes right down to the query of why serious audiophiles would use iTunes in the first place. If you need a really flexible media player for the Mac (and for Home windows, Linux, Android and iOS) get the free VLC Media Participant at And yes, it plays FLAC and nearly all the things else, each audio and video. Convert huge FLAC music to compressed and audio-transcoder.com smaller MP3 format to save extra music on their PCs or listen to those recordsdata in your iPod or different private digital media player. Swap to Output tab, specify a brand new folder for the MP3 files to be created in. Personally, I like the quality and manageable dimension of FLACs. I'm glad to see more retailers selling them, with Bandcamp and 7Digital pushing their prices a bit of lower. I would like to see Apple grow up and help FLAC in iTunes, however I've all however given up hope on iTunes ever getting higher. No less than Amazon could start selling FLACs. In any case, they've all of the server space in the world. So, it has been dropped at my attention that not solely do MP3 recordsdata sacrifice quality for size when they are made, however apparently they also degrade over time. Because of lack of inbuilt error checking, i assume. Simply add or drag & drop your FLAC recordsdata to be transformed to MP3 codecs and click Covert button. That's just all and you may get the consequence already soon. Extract FLAC or any audio file from video files. Compatibility additionally comes into play considerably. While most DJ software program exhibits love for lossless codecs, AIFF and WAV files are practically universally accepted in business applications and skilled music software program. To retrieve information about video files, this system uses the library ( ).
However there are a number of main streaming companies that offer very high sound quality - Spotify , Tidal and shortly Qobuz - and relying on the document, they are often indistinguishable from the CD. Whereas Spotify content material is ripped in 320Kbps Ogg Vorbis, it is Tidal that gives the biggest various to private collections as it's also based on FLAC. The company can be capable of offer hello-res music by including Meridian's MQA expertise for compatible units. By contrast, Qobuz offers hello-res FLAC streaming with out the usage of a proprietary wrapper, however the trade-off is much bigger file sizes not suitable for the train. Within the meantime, both Spotify and Tidal let you obtain tracks for offline listening (with a paid subscription), and both catalogs are fairly impressive. For one-cease media conversions, it's exhausting to go mistaken with Freemake Video Converter, an all-in-one converter that may take numerous audio, video, and photo file formats and convert them into gadget-friendly forms. Freemake helps many system presets that guarantee compatibility when importing movies or music to a selected smartphone or pill mannequin. You possibly can tweak output high quality and other technical settings. A straightforward to use interface simplifies workflow and guides you thru the process. Some features, resembling subtitles, DVD menus, and blackbar elimination, can be found by donating. Looking at nine widespread digital download websites for DJ music, three of them—Amazon, iTunes, and Google Play—only sold one type of lossy audio. Bandcamp however, sells all seven formats here, typically in a couple of resolution per format. You don't have to pay further to obtain any increased-decision audio file, because Bandcamp's business model lets each artist set their own costs. They upload a mastered observe at the highest decision attainable, and Bandcamp converts that to all the opposite formats for customers to decide on for themselves. Copy Any Music, Movies To iPhone & iPad Without iTunes Or Jailbreak. Helps MKV, FLAC, AVI & Extra. Free to strive. Convert any audio information back to FLAC with out audio quality loss. So for all this you must set up Wondershare Video Converter in your system then observe these few steps. Additionally sometimes however not consistently, if extracting to awav of the mentioned above input files, then the ensuing file is a white noise hiss. All Free FLAC to MP3 Converter helps encode video information from the FLAC format to the MP3 format. By changing FLAC to MP3, you'll be able to create excellent music assortment which is spectacular in measurement and convenient to use and discover extra free space for the brand new songs. You might be even allowed to get pleasure from music in video sources by extracting sound tracks from these video recordsdata. Word: Listen, as Format Manufacturing facility tries to bundle software program throughout installation, as well as the first time you start up this system. CUE files are often hooked up to the Audio CD images created by packages like EAC (Exact Audio Copy), CDRWin, CUERipper. This manner you can efficiently convert many codecs of audio information (which may be refused to be performed by VLC Media Player), to the accepted format which is MP3 format. VLC is an effective software for audio and video playing and also for conversion of various audio files from one extension to a different.

Baby crows get to experience real music for the first time, wonders what was missing in their lives ft. Karasuno first years
ever since i played bandori, i’ve been absolutely hooked on the girls and their music. and the fact that their world have so much potential to have crossovers with (and especially since bang dream will have a separate universe where there will be boy bands). so take this crossover off of my cold hands bc i love these two series

Hinata Shouyo | Hello, Happy World!
- The sprightly young boy is always quick on his feet. Personally, I headcanon him to be a decent if not, good dancer. He prefers music that have funky beats like Electro Swing or future bass music like Snail’s house. Quite niche music selections but those types of music do keep him up and running. At least it was better than Tanaka’s or Nishinoya's choice of music.
- That's why he couldn't contain his excitement when he hears that you’re in a band. Mind you, the only band roles that he knows are the drummer and like, two guitar players. He assumed that there was no base guitar and thought the deep something that he keeps hearing in songs was the help of the drums.
- With a pained chuckle, you decided to invite him to HaroHapi’s open mic night at the nearest studio so you can educate Hinata in band music. While HaroHapi wasn't the best example as compared to Afterglow or Poppin’ Party, at least your group had the heart to perform just as good as they are.
- When the open mic night drew near, it took Hinata his all to not shake at the number of people and instruments there were in here. So many different types of instruments, so many different types of microphones, and so many black circle thingies (records).
- When he finally meets Hello, Happy World! He just took one glance at Michelle before fainting.
“Misaki-chan don't mind…”
- You waved at Hinata while you were on stage, wearing the HaroHapi costume and a marching mic in hand. Hinata had that image planted in his mind forever (though he does feel weird when the orange-haired one looked strikingly like him).
- As per the house’s rule, you performed three songs: Silhouette, YAPPY! SCHOOL CARNIVAL ☆彡, and Goka! Gokai?! Phantom Thief!. Throughout the entire performance, Hinata couldn't sit still as he marveled at how every song had him bouncing in his seat. Not even a few minutes in on the performance, he wanted to jump up on stage and dance with you to the beat of the music. Heck, even the ones near him can't even watch the show properly because of the bounciness that was radiating off of him, metaphorically and physically.
- When the show was over, he immediately bounced over to you, scaring Kanon at how high he could jump as he poured out all the praises he could possibly give out. He even added his own language to describe the songs like ‘bwum’ or 'tss’. Somehow he even roped in Kokoro and Kaoru to say all of that stuff with him. You, Michelle and Kanon could only fuee in response.
        - “I didn't know your boyfriend is literally Kokoro.”
        - “Takes one to know one.”
        - “Hey.”
- He makes HaroHapi's music his go-to training music. Just listening to the beats and your voice gets his feet thumping and heart pounding. Unfortunately, the team gets even more annoyed at him because he sings the songs out loud sometimes… which is all the time whenever he jams his earphones in. It's even worse when Tanaka joins in as a means to annoy opponents but hey, it's pretty damn good memories recorded on phone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kageyama Tobio | Poppin’ Party
Literally has no taste in music that you could cry. Has no interest in listening to it since sounds could hinder his practice and the fact that he doesn't understand crap about it. He remembers that classical music helps in studying better so at least he knows that. The only problem is he got in trouble in class because he had earphones in his ear with Mozart blasting out.
Having Hinata relay that story to you, you had to invite him to the open mic at the live house. Kageyama tilted his head to the side when you looked really red in the face when you talked to him about it, though. At least you managed to invite him without breaking into hysterical laughter.
Remember that one episode where Kageyama went in Shiratorizawa muttering that he's part of the student body? Yeah, imagine that but replace 'I'm a student here’ to 'My s/o is a musician’. People around him flee instantly from how constipated he looked as he surveyed the building.
Poppin’ Party, in your opinion, has the most genre of songs compared to other bands. With Kasumi's powerful range, Rimi's cotton-soft voice, and your own brings out the best vocals Poppin’ Party has to offer. You were certain that Kageyama was going to enjoy music now with your band.
        - “____-chan! There's a scary person in the building!! And he knows your name!!!”
        - “Oh, that's my boyfriend I think.”
        - “Are you sure he's going to enjoy our show…?”
- Kageyama wonders why the heck are there balls underneath your outfits but he didn't pay heed to it when you saw him at the corner of your eye and winked. He tried to quell his burning blush but the sight of your blushing blueberry made you giggle. Tae herself even mentions that his expression looked exactly like one of her rabbits make when it was starving. With that image in mind, you had to bite your lip to stop smiling so wide.
- PoPiPa had three songs to perform in mind: Hachigatsu no If, Happy Happy Party!, and God knows…. Kageyama was just sitting back in awe at the music. Before he knew it, his fingers tapped against his side in the beat of the songs. His mind automatically memorizing every single note each song has and commits them to memory, even if the songs vastly different in genre. The band just kept popping energy that it made the audience join in on the singing.
- After the show, he's just as awkward at giving out compliments to other people as he is with his teammates. He could barely even let out the first syllables of the compliment before Kasumi and Tae went up in his face and demanded answers. He would've yelled at them if it weren't for the fact that they were both girls and strangers to him.
- Once you teach him that no, he can't use earphones during class, he uses your music during his jogging or study sessions. Hearing your voice made his mind calm down from all the stress he's accumulated in the week. Though nothing compares to hearing you sing an acapella version of your songs during a cuddle session in his room. It's the best feeling in the world in his opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yamaguchi Tadashi | Afterglow
- This dude gets most of his music library from Tsukishima but he tends to have his own playlist. He's embarrassed by this but he loves rock music like K-on! or other rock bands that's secretly kept in his playlist. He can never deny the powerful music rock bands have and that it gives him energy for the day.
- Having that information, you excitedly asked him if he could watch you and your band perform in the live house. He tries to hide his excitement but it shows by the shine in his eyes that he is excited for your performance. Whether if it was his favorite genre or not, he's proud of the fact that you can musically perform.
- It wasn't his first time in a live house. He and Tsukishima sometimes have trips to live houses to hear budding artists and find new songs. So it wasn't a surprise to him to see your band with all the instruments necessary for a rock band. He keeps it to himself, but he was slightly intimidated by both Ran and Tomoe because of the fact that they looked like they meant business.
- Afterglow is the literal definition of a rock band, with you as a second singer next to Ran and wearing punk clothes, your group was ready play the same as always. Well, almost the same since Yamaguchi was there and you wanted to give it your all and that didn't go unnoticed by Moca and Himari. Moca just kept dropping hints that your boyfriend is watching and Himari just kept bugging you on what type of boyfriend Yamaguchi is. The others didn't exactly minded, saying that your partner shouldn't deter the performance, but they were happy for you nonetheless.
- Yamaguchi luckily found a spot nearest to the stage. The freckles on his face were made more prominent by his red blush when he sees you in your outfit. It slightly matched Tomoe's outfit, which showed your midriff and it didn't help you were wearing shorts. Tsugu even mentioned that the blush made his plain-looking face stand out more. You joked that she should blush more on stage.
- With a spring in your step, Afterglow performed three songs: True Color, Y.O.L.O.!!!!, and Don't say “lazy”. All three songs that shook the audience with the power your band has, Yamaguchi especially. He felt like he could love you even more when you were playing rock music as he continues to watch you with hearts in his eyes. The music pumped up everyone in the audience, but Yamaguchi was pretty sure your voice pumped up the beats in his heart. It wasn't just your voice though, you and the band didn't stare at the crowd, you just stare ahead and played your songs, almost like Afterglow was too powerful for the audience to comprehend and Yamaguchi can't help but agree with that.
- After the performance, Yamaguchi couldn't contain his words and let all of his praises out on you and the band. He only stuttered once or twice and that was when Ran was glaring (more like studying) him. Behind you, Himari and Moca were snickering at the sight of your flushed face.
        - “Didn’t think I'd live to see the day that ____ gets to blush!”
        - “Moca approves of this lover of yours~”
- If Yamaguchi's heart was pounding from your performance, it was beating past the limit when Himari and Moca asked him about your relationship. Nothing to invasive but he gets embarrassed when his love life is talked about. Tsugu had to be the voice of reason for everybody so that nothing will go too out of hand.
- Yamaguchi now proudly listens to rock music as he goes out and about. He doesn't even get embarrassed when others ask him what he's listening to as he shows them the playlist of all your band's songs on shuffle mode. His teammates were confused and when rock music was his favorite genre but didn't belittle him for it. The only insult that he's gotten was that his genre aligned with Tanaka's genre, in which Tsukishima had to step in that “No way in hell is Yamaguchi's girlfriend plays the same genre as your trash.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsukishima Kei | Roselia
(I would rather have it be Raise A Suilen but with this, they're 5 and I sorta wanted to have them each like the original 5 so ahahaha. Besides, by the time I was thinking of this, RAS didn't exist yet so im going with roselia)
- Tsukki's playlist is completely random that nobody can pinpoint his favorite genre. When one hears his earphones closely, they could make out acoustic guitar, but suddenly the next day it's EDM. He keeps it to himself but he likes the reactions people make when they hear it. It's sort of a personal game to Tsukki to see how much a person reacts when he keeps switching his playlists and blasting them loudly in his ears.
- As a music enthusiast (as well as being Yukina's go-to person when it comes to making lyrics), you invited him to watch your performance at the nearest live house. It wasn't a surprise that you performed, he remembered you mentioned that you were in a band as second vocalist and lyricist. While he seemed nonchalant when he accepted your invitation, inside he was over the moon when he gets to hear your music.
- It was like becoming second nature to him when he goes inside the live house and peruse the other music fanatics like him. He used to go and watch bands perform with Yamaguchi but didn't have time for it anymore with volleyball practice and his studies. The place didn't seem to change much, except for the fact that there was a new manager called Marina and a bunch more girl bands than Tsukki could remember.
- Roselia has the best music and you were proud that continuous practice has made this rose bloom beautifully. While the girls were preparing, you spotted Tsukishima talking to Marina. Feeling a presence on your shoulder, you glanced at Lisa, who was smirking at you. Out of everyone on Roselia, Lisa and Ako were the only ones interested in your boyfriend and how a stoic beanpole managed to snatch you away. The others couldn't care less, but Yukina did warn you that your love life shouldn't interfere with the music.
- Your costume reminded Tsukishima of birds, which made him wonder if you were secretly planning a crow joke after the performance. It was mostly blue, with the same colored roses adorning your hair and dress. The entire group looked like people from some fantasy anime and Tsukki had to commend whoever made your costumes because dang those are good costumes.
- With his gaze on you, you had to be at your best. The band performed three songs: BLACK SHOUT, Determination Symphony, and Shangri-La. You weren't kidding when you said to him that Roselia was amazing. The band had amazing vocals and perfect harmonization that your voices just blended together effortlessly. Not only that, you and Yukina had an aura that made you two bring the band in full circle… something that Tsukki could never pinpoint.
- When he meets you after the performance, he had to pull you away from the group just so you could see the ever-so rare honest expression on his face. The honest expression that didn't show any malice or ulterior motive but only pure joy that he got to see his lover perform. You had to cover your face so the tears and snot wouldn't spill and let it ruin the moment but alas, Lisa shoved herself in, misreading the situation that looked like Tsukki made you cry.
        - “Lisa, it's not what it looks like! This isn't the first time I cried because of him!”
        - “You what.”
- Tsukishima gives up on his personal game and instead blasts Roselia's music in his earphones. As he figured, a few people knew about their music and had asked him numerous times about his sudden fixation on them but he brushed them off. Hearing your voice is like his safe house when he's overwhelmed by Hinata's constant shouting. Well, more like giving him more of deaf ears when the rock music overpowers the loud ones voices.

Yachi Hitoka | Pastel*Palettes
- She listens to music when she's making her notes all beautifully coordinated. It ranges from time to time; sometimes lo-fi, sometimes jazz with rain sound effects in the background, anything that can set her mind to ease. However, she has a guilty pleasure for listening to girl group songs. At one point she wanted to stand out more like the girls she sees on TV but when she accepts that she'll be just a Townsperson B, she stopped listening to them.
- When spotting her hidden J-pop playlist on her phone, you (loudly) invited her to watch your band's performance this weekend. Once she got over her initial shock, she agreed out of fear that you might hate her when she wouldn't go to your performance that you obviously practiced so much. She knew that you were working as an idol and she doesn't even know what you saw in her that you wanted to date her.
- In the live house, Yachi was like she was back in the Titan jungle, except animated words of musical jargon she couldn't understand started floating about her vision. She could only stand there, dumbly, as people began to wonder if she was alright. Even Marina noticed and had to step in to see if Yachi was okay.
- Pastel*Palettes was your pride and joy. You wouldn't know what to do if the group didn't exist. The band had its ups and downs because it was literal strangers forming a band, but you managed to pull through. You hoped that Yachi would enjoy your performance. Speaking of which, you saw her being comforted by Marina and by the looks of things, she's having a panic attack again. When you went to her and asked what was wrong, she started screaming when she saw Chisato, her idol when she was a kid.
           - “Chisato-senpai, you killed her!”
- Yachi situated herself in the middle, a place that she never wanted to be in but swallowed her fear just so she could see you up close. Her fear quickly disappeared when she saw you in your costume. Your favorite color in pastel and white colors complemented your dress like you were an actual magical girl. When you spotted her in the middle, you had to bite back your smile in fear of embarrassing Yachi further.
- PasuPare performed three songs: Pasupa Revolutions☆, Yura-Yura Ring-Dong-Dance, and MOON PRIDE. Throughout the performance, Yachi couldn’t even breathe. She knows that all the idols were lip-synching in their performances so seeing your band perform live was like Hinata showing her the freak quick. After the show, she met you and began rambling everything that she loved about your performance: the songs themselves, your liveliness, the absolute  adorableness about your aesthetic that she couldn’t put it into words. Your other members though found this endearing, especially Hina and Eve.
        - “It was like-shing! And bling-bling!”
        - “Hitoka, you’re being Hinata again.”
        - “Do Japanese people say these things?”
        - “I don’t think so, but I think she’s super boppin’ about it!”
- Yachi now proudly listens to your songs in her phone whenever she studies or whether she was about to present something in front of an audience. Your voice gives her the confidence she needed to push through as she was announcing a speech to the Karasuno team. However, she wasn’t prepared to be bombarded with questions when people saw you two on your date. She knew about this at the back of her mind, she just didn’t think there were this many people who were demanding this much information to the point that she fainted.

OC/Author PrideFest Question Mess Part 3
Thanks for the tag @raevenlywrites ! Ended up sleeping longer than expected, here’s the last part of the set of questions.
Rules I am going with: answer the questions you know or are comfortable sharing, tag others, add a question if you feel like something is missing.
Note: I will be answering in three different posts, one per section, rather than all together because of how many questions there are.
Questions for you:
Introduce yourself! Tell us a little bit about you and what you write
Why do you write LGBT+ characters?
Have you always written LGBT+ characters? If no, what inspired you to start? Is it a deliberate representational choice?
Do you use modern labels in your work? Why or why not?
World builders: do you have any neat societal twists? (unique names for IDs, different marriage practices, etc.)
Do you write outside your own experiences? (cis writing trans, wlw writing mlm, etc.) If yes, how confident do you feel about it?
Tell us about a favorite book/character someone else wrote that inspired you (or just plain gave you a warm and fuzzy)
Any advice for someone else writing LGBT+ characters?
Would you like people to ask you more questions when this is over?
Free space! Wax poetic about something near and dear to your heart.
Questions for your Ocs (in character or out, dealer’s choice):
Say hi! Let us get to know you, you big beautiful person, you!
How do you feel about the world your author has created for you?
Are you out? To whom, why or why not, etc?
Tell us a little about your journey. Have you always IDed the way you do now? Are there parts of you you’re still figuring out?
Do you feel settled in your ID, or do you think it might change as you and your author go on?
Did your author always know you were [blank], or did you have to tell them? If yes, oh please, please tell us how! :3
Is being [blank] particularly hard in your world? How does your society treat you differently than ours might?
Tell us a little about your unique experiences with your ID. Do you experience dysphoria? Is it impossible to find a date? Just want to find that special someone for snuggles but everyone expects sex? Unload for a minute, it’s okay to struggle sometimes.
What’s the best part about being [blank] in your world?
Do you like getting fan-mail? Would you like people to ask you more questions when this is over?
Grab that mic! Drop some truth on us, something you’ve just been dying to share! Shout out to your besties!
Questions for either you or your OCs:
Going to answer these like I would a Q&A post, with the first three characters that comes to mind for each question.
What’s your orientation and gender? Wave that flag!!!
Tichina - female and pan. I’m proud of both. While I have not yet met my soulmates, I have had a variety of partners over the year that covers the spectrum of genders and sexualities.
Quin - agender and queer. I am much more comfortable with my gender then I am my orientation.
Stepan - male, demisexual, pan or poly romantic, never quite sure which is a better fit. I’m good with my alignments and try to always be respectful of other peoples. If my patient has one I am unfamiliar with, then I make sure to do research so I can help my patient to the best of my abilities.
When did you realize you were LGBT+?
Jon - as a preteen. The others on the gymnastics team were talking about how cute people were and I didn’t see it.
Isa - in my mid-twenties. I’m older than I look.
Nazreen - after meeting my soulmates in my mid-twenties, prior to that I just thought there was something wrong with me.
What makes your heart melt?
Nazreen - not technically related to my orientation, but seeing Akaal with the children, particularly the smaller ones. He’s so big and yet I know he’s never going to harm them.
Sitara *chuckles* Nazreen beat me to that one, *thoughtful look* I’m going with the way acceptance is the norm and not the unusual within the Balakhnov Building.
Tichina - any time I am able to get one of my high risk kids off the street, bonus points for the ones who find themselves and do so proudly.
Do you have a favorite LGBT+ song? Movie? Book? Artist? (comic?)
Marie - too many books to list them all, the beauty of being an editor. I’ve always enjoyed All the Things She Said by t.A.T.u
Ioanna - Father would have been horrified if still alive to know I play games like Saints Row 2. I think that Gat, Aisha, and the main character are a triad. Since the main character can be anything the player ones, I take them to be genderfluid, so no matter how the relationship unfolds it’s bi
Sparks - Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman. You know she keeps them in line and makes Bruce stop brooding so damned much.
Do you have a secret crush outside of your own work? Some wild crossover OTP?
Aither - I spent my teenage years shipping myself with Buffy and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and there was that one time I wondered what it would be like to be an Aither sandwich with Squall and Seifer from FFVIII. . Of course, as an adult I have also shipped myself with Sam and Gabriel from Supernatural.
Aaron *tries not to fidget* Q from the Craig!Bond movies is quiet adorable and I wouldn’t mind a good snuggle with him.
Diego - I don’t know if I’d like anything more than friendship, but I’d love to get to know Stiles and Lydia from Teen Wolf. Maybe Even Scott if he could get his head out of his rump long enough to actually act like the friend he’s supposed to be.
Tell us about your LGTB+ headcannons (I’d really love to see someone’s character answer this)
Karl - I always thought that William and Geoffrey from A Knight’s Tale were boyfriends. When Jocelyn joins them, they form a proper triad.
Isaak - no one can convince me that Bones, Spock and Jim weren’t a space-husband triad!
Vara - I’d like to think that Nathan, Audrey, and Duke in Haven are a triad. Most of Nathan and Duke’s conflict coming from the fact neither of them wants to admit it for whatever silly reason.
What’s your favorite thing about being LGBT+?
Vasilia - I’m myself and able to accept that I am myself, rather than trying to be someone I am not because I hadn’t accepted being transgender.
Isa - there is a community of people like me.
Keywon - pride in my friends and community.
Is there a cool place you like to hang out with your squad? Maybe an LGBT+ meet up?
Keywon - well, our team hangs out at the basketball court a lot, we also spend time in the community center where we are able to get help with any school work we need. We’re encouraged to bring others our age or orientation to hang out and what not.
Quin - before meeting Aither, I spent a lot of my time at the queer book store, I didn’t really have a squad, but at least it was somewhere safe for me in public. Not that I like being in public too often.
Molon - while I do spend a lot of time at the community center and at the basketball court, I also spend a lot of time at the nomyn san (Mongolian Library) where a lot of people of a similar descent hang out to share culture.
What are some things you do to keep positive?
Tichina - I help those in my community and the communities around mine. Every time I do so, I know I am helping someone else avoid the hardships that I and others before me went through. They’ll have a chance at a better life.
Tzvia - prayer and regular worship, I am active in the both my faith and sports.
Isaak - studying helps me keep positive because it means I can reach for the stars (literally)
Do you have any advice for young LGBT+ people?
Jon - you’re not broken, wrong, or otherwise odd. No matter what some people might claim, they’re idiots.
Aither - own whatever space you are in, most won’t know how to take it.
Jamie - be yourself, it might require leaving what you know, but in the long run it’ll be far better for you.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Isaak - hopefully on the moon, it’s going to take a lot of hard work and study, but my Uncle and Aunt are making it possible so I’m not letting them or myself down.
Falco - retiring, I hope. I sometimes feel far too old for position within the Network that I hold.
Ioanna - I happier and healthier me, preferably.
Welp, that took way longer than planned because of a host of reasons. Still, have some more information on my massive world.
Tagging some peeps I am getting to know off the writer peeps spreadsheet so they can see my answers or do them as they feel fit.

Tumblr media
TL;DR version: I'm pretending to make music. Somewhere in 2007-08, I got introduced to the idea of "internet mash-up artist" when a friend living in the US sent me a link to one of the first mash-up artists to go viral on the Internet, DJ ToToM. He mixed everything we were listening to then. It was fascinating to listen to something like Bob Dylan through the gaze of The Pixies. It's a different song, it's the same two songs but now it's different. It means something else now. Yeah, you can still be attached to each of the two (or more) songs that make the mashup as well. But it's just that they were made for each other also.
Since then, mashups have become a part of my library. Every now and then, I go looking for some new mashup artist who is utterly mindblowing when it comes to their matchmaking abilities. Others just make remixes, where they take an electronic sample beat and then speed up/slow down two tracks to match beat with that sample beat and play them on top of it. Or my nemesis: Bands who play two covers clearled stitched together one after the other. Yes, I'm a mashup hipster. A mashup is all about sampling. If you're doing anything other than sampling then you're making music (it may even be amazing) but you're not making a mashup. A mashup is about an alternative reality's pop culture (as defined by all alternative reality references/imagined in popular culture).
2010 onwards, mashups became my way of celebrating New Year's Eve. Two of the biggest viral mashup hitmakers Dj Earworm and Daniel Kim would release their own year-end specials -- a mashup of the Billboard top 50 tracks of the ear -- titled United States of Pop and Pop Danthology. (In my head, it's like the mashup boxing match of the year. I'm sure neither of the two artists think that way.) Then I compare notes between the two mashups. Who made the smoothest, coolest mashup with songs put together in the least forced way possible. All of this is dependent on my own judgement of course, not some standardized guide or musical knowledge. Every year, I've spent a couple of days on Audacity trying to see if I can mash songs together before realising I know shit about creating music and giving up. (I actually know nothing, I love listening to music though.) I tried reading hack guides and watching terrible videos about how to extract vocals from a song. (Hey, it never works for anything but the song they're demonstrating in the video.)
Somewhere in 2011, I discovered Girl Talk. He has taken ‘mashup artist’ to a whole new level. His mashup albums are a like a reflection in the entire genre that would be made of mashups and samples. In his discography, you'll find everything from banging dance numbers to just good soulful listens to sometimes even an exploration in noise. I'm not sure I'll ever go that deep into the art/craft of mashups. You must listen to at least one full Girl Talk album to know what I'm talking about.
Recently, I started following oneboredjeu on twitter, who I consider perhaps one of the finest mashup artists that lives on the Internet. I walked into her YouTube channel for the Gambino and Gorillaz mashups and stayed for everything else. Among her recent uploads, her Sia-Lorde and SZA-Ariana Grande mashups are to die for. Through her, I found Raheem D. His Lil Kim-Ariana Grande mashup is da bomb. That was when I also discovered there was a mashup artist scene and their own space on social media. Reading them discuss mashups, hearing their uploads, I learnt two key things which I used when I restarted my attempts at mashing songs on Audacity:
1. It's best if songs are on the same key and close to each other in BPM (beats per minute) count. Because I know shit about making music, I couldn't guess what key any given song was, and I could never count beats already. 2. You can't just cut vocals out of a song like it works with image editing (which I had learnt already). Mashup artists source their stems (different tracks that make a song: vocals, strings, percussion, or the complete instrumental backing track) from all over the Internet.
Finally, we're at how did I end up here. A few weeks ago, I was hanging out with a friend from Chile. Our usual scene was sitting on his couch, and having a YouTube party where we'd keep showing each other videos or music. That day, the moment I entered his house, he jumped up.
"Duude! Do you remember the Asereje song?" He was doing the step. "The Tomatina girls or something?" "Yes, yes! That one." "We just called it the Ketchup song in India." "That's not the point. Somebody finally figured out what the gibberish part of the song was!" "There was a gibberish part?" "The lines that come after Asereje are all gibberish!" "They're not Spanish? They sound so much like Spanish!" "Yes, they do but they're Spanish gibberish. If you understood Spanish, you'd know." "So what's the meaning of Asereje?"
He then played a video from a Chilean news channel where they were reporting that a dude on Twitter had cracked the Asereje code. So in Spanish, the girls are singing the story of Diego. One night Diego is wrecked on alcohol and drugs and arrives at a club. The DJ starts playing a song, which happens to be Diego's favourite song. Y la baila (And he dances), y la goza (and he enjoys it) y la caaantaaa (and he siiings): Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere Sebiunouba majabi an de bugui an de buididipí Sebiunouba majabi an de bugui an de buididipí Sebiunouba majabi an de bugui an de buididipí So Diego's favourite song iiiiis: I said a hip hop, hippie to the hippie The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it out Bubba to the bang bang boogie, boobie to the boogie To the rhythm of the boogie the beat
Rapper's Delight! Yes, that blew my mind and I can no longer take The Ketchup Song lightly. I have regrets for taking it lightly when I was in college and the song was a sensation.
So at this end of this long detour in my mashup story: I got home that night and tweeted, asking the Internet for a mashup of The Ketchup Song and Rapper's Delight. Someone from my twitter social life was equally mindblown and asked for the same. Something hit me then and I made this just ffs. I'd successfully managed to get vocals only tracks of Rapper's Delight and The Ketchup Song, and an instrumental version of The Ketchup Song to put together that short clip -- in my head, it was more of a proof of concept that I can mashup AND that the guy from Chile was right, Asereje IS Rapper's Delight. Last Monday, I got bored one evening and also was itching to see if I could get even close to making a mashup. So as usual, my mashup attempt of 2017 was underway. I googled to see if somebody had compiled a song keys database and ta-da: I found Audio Keychain. While just clicking through their database to see if any song strikes me in particular that I wanted to try using in a mashup. I found Katy B's 5AM, which I really like. A reverse search told me that Blue Oyster Cult's hit The Reaper had the same key and almost the same BPM. There it was decided, for my first attempt, I was going to mash these two songs together. I found the Katy B stems on some filesharing platform after some searching. A decent instrumental (backing track) version of The Reaper on YouTube was found much easily and downloaded. I worked for a couple of hours and made an almost 2-minute draft. It was working but I hit a creative block there onwards. So I exported the 1:48 clip to mp3 from Audacity and sent it to the friend who first introduced me to ToToM and went to sleep.
The next day at office, I played the mashup over and over again to see if still made sense. I made a colleague listen to it because I was confident that I had no distance and it would sound amazing to me. He said, "I haven't heard either of these songs but I like this song I'm hearing." That was hella encouraging. Although, I was sure that it was a fluke that I managed to make that one. If I try once again, I'll fail miserably. On Wednesday, I opened Audio Keychain and decided to try again. After some hits and misses, I finally ended up with Billy Idol's Dancing With Myself (backing track) and David Guetta/Nicki Minaj/Bebe Rexha's Hey Mama (vocal track). After the first draft, there were lots of empty spaces for which I didn't find any vocals that fit. So I added the chorus from Charli XCX's Boom Clap, which doesn't really fit as well as the first two songs with each other. But it was all sounding pleasant and I hadn't fucked up as miserably as the last seven years.
Thursday evening, I didn't even think twice. I got home, logged onto Audio Keychain and started looking for tracks to mashup. A lot of random and terrible experiments later, Ellie Goulding's Lights and Bon Iver's Calgary seemed like they had promise together. Unfortunately, just like the bad Charli XCX stem from the previous mashup, I found a below-par vocals only track for Lights. I didn't actually care because all I wanted to see was if I could make a decent mashup again. I really, really liked how the two tracks came together. Hence, this decision of publishing the mashup. I would've published on Thursday night itself but I think I was too happy about how these two tracks worked together. I felt this track needed a video. And in a vision due to a fuckton of sleeplessness, Sridevi and my favourite song from Chaalbaaz came to mind - Tera Beemaar Mera Dil. So then I downloaded the best available YouTube video for that song and started to work on it. After quite a few drafts, a low-end machine, where every render takes 2 hours and the only way to see the video is to render it because otherwise everything starts malfunctioning due to the load, here's the final mashup video for a mashup track.

Chapter 16: Rules
One of the reasons I liked Ari so much was that though we differed in opinion about many things (like which are the best comics) and though we had what might seem from the outside as diametrically opposed outlooks on life (his was much darker than mine; in fact he once claimed that brooding was healthy because it was good exercise for his eyebrows) and though he enjoyed yanking my chain about a lot of things, when it came down to it he made me laugh more than just about any other person on the planet. We were like seatbelts: we just clicked. He might not have thought so himself, but he had a big imagination and was very thoughtful and philosophical and funny and sensitive and kind. There was also a sadness in him that he tried to hide from me, but I could see it in his eyes sometimes. We never talked about it, though. He was better at not talking about things than I was.
In truth, I liked it when he argued with me (though argue isn’t really the right word, since we never got angry at each other; debate would be more accurate). And I especially liked when I was able to win him over. I’d been on Debate and Speech teams since middle school so he must have known that he never stood a chance when I got into that point-counterpoint mode but he never got cranky with me. (Or if he did, I knew it was all for show).
One area where he eventually came around to my way of thinking was my thing about liking rules. I have a general respect for rules and discipline and technique. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a pro-fascist or anything like that and I like the idea of chaos and nihilism just as much as the next teenager longing for independence. And I also know that breaking the rules is fun, too, and often a necessity in creating art and living the life you want to live. But I can see why rules are useful, too, especially if they grant you freedom within structure. I think your brain starts working differently if you’re trying to compose a sonnet in iambic pentameter vs if you’re writing a stream of consciousness journal entry. Neither is better or worse, but rules can be part of the fun and the challenge.
My thing with liking to cuss, for example. I liked cussing but knew that I wouldn’t relish it quite as much if my parents allowed me to throw around f-bombs any old effing time I felt like it. Or my thing about not liking to wear shoes. Who was the puritanical jerk who decided that it’s a Western societal norm that everyone has to wear shoes everywhere they go, anyway? If I want to take my shoes off outside or on the bus or in church or in the movie theater and I’m not hurting or offending anyone by letting my toes feel the wind and sun and air, why should I keep my shoes on when they cause me nothing but torture and discomfort? When did taking off your shoes in public become as bad as breaking one of the Ten Commandments? And it’s a good general life rule to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, right? I just choose a literal interpretation of that since he didn’t wear shoes either.
But where things like games were concerned, I liked rules. I thought of rules as being like a container or a cup for water (in this metaphor water=fun and freedom). Without the container, what do you get? Just liquid spilled all over the front of your shirt.
I liked coming up with new games for us, with the caveat that we played by the self-established rules. The first game we made up together was the shoe toss game (or as I named it: Urban Javelshoe). It started out simply because I felt like throwing my shoes around (because shoes are a nuisance and may as well be walloped for all the good they serve). At first he griped at me because I wanted to measure with chalk exactly how far each of us could throw our shoes on the street. He said it took away the fun, which to him was the act of throwing. I argued that the fun was not just the throwing, but the whole system we created together: deciding how many tosses we made per set, using chalk and a tape measure to record each of our throws, deciding how many sets qualified for a win. Just throwing shoes around for no reason? Plebian. This was much more interesting and systematic and fun. He came around, eventually. And though I won the game, he ended up having the longest recorded toss, which I could tell he was secretly pleased about.
Here are some of the other games we made up that summer:
Tap-Out. One of us would tap or punch out the beat to a song on the other person’s arm and the other would try and guess the song just based on the rhythm. We’d decide on the genre (such as Top 40 or The Beatles) and if the person didn’t guess right after three tap-outs then the tapper could hum the rhythm once (with no varied notes, just the rhythm on one straight note). After five rounds, the winner got to choose which music we listened to all afternoon.
Lava Ground. We’d play this in the yard or up in my room. You’d have to leap from place to place and land on furniture, cushions, pillows, clothes, shoes or basically whatever you could maneuver to land on as long as you didn’t touch the ground (because it was made of lava). If your bare skin touched the ground you had to act out a horrific death. The loser also had to clean up everything that we ended up spreading out on the floor or grass.
Passenger Palaver. We’d come up with stories about our fellow passengers during our afternoon bus rides. At first there were no rules but then I decided that one of us should make up a line or phrase for the story and the person telling the story would have to somehow include that phrase. Or sometimes we’d trade off after each line, making up the story together as we went along.
The Superhero Origin Generator. We’d go around my house and each of us would pick out two objects (such as a rolling pin and toothbrush). The other person would then have to make up how those two objects led to the creation of a superhero’s powers. For example: Mikey’s mother is a baker. One day her collection of rolling pins falls on her head and she tragically dies before young Mikey’s very own eyes. He grows up hating anything sweet. He despises cakes and donuts and cookies because they remind him of his dead mom. As a result, he becomes obsessed with brushing his teeth and never has a single cavity. But one day he has a mysterious tooth ache so he goes to a dentist’s check up. He doesn’t know that this dentist is in fact evil and while he’s in the dentist’s chair getting his teeth X-rayed, the evil dentist Dr. X turns up the machine to unprecedented levels. Mikey’s teeth become radioactive blasters. After that, every time he smiles, it unleashes a ray of toxic light more powerful than the sun. From that day forward he becomes: Gamma Tooth Man. If something we came up was particularly good we might make our own comic about it. Ari wasn’t much of an artist, so I’d draw and he’d come up with action, dialogue and concept. We made a good team.
Telenovela Lipread. We’d put a soap opera on silent and make up our own lines of dialogue. The only rule was that each character needed its own distinct voice or accent. Ari was surprisingly good at playing naïve love struck heroines (ironically, of course).
One day, after I’d just finished reading all of The Lord of the Rings books, I got the idea that Ari and I should make up our own language, like Elvish.
When I told Ari about my idea, he snorted and said, “So you’d rather make up an entirely new language than learn Spanish? You really hate Spanish that much?”
“If we had our own language we could write each other notes and letters and be the only ones who understand them. If they’re in Spanish our parents could snoop.”
“If you wanted to write in secret you could just make up a code, not a whole new language. That seems like a lot of work.”
“If Tolkien could do it how hard can it actually be?”
“How the hell do you go about making up a new language anyway?”
“I’m not sure. We might have to do some research.”
“Research? During the summer? For no other reason than you think it would be cool to undertake the massively insane project of inventing a new language?”
“Yeah. We’d be be like C-3PO when R2-D2 beeps and no one else knows what he’s saying.”
“Yes, but they’re talking in droidspeak. It’s probably just randomly generated gobbledygook.”
“Or maybe it’s as poetic as Shakespeare. But we’ll never know. Don’t you want to know what it’s like to speak a language only one other person on the planet understands?”
“It sounds exclusionary. I’m a man of the people.”
“You’re a man of the lazy. Come on, let’s go to the library so I can search the card catalogue about books on linguistics.”
So we went to the library. I love the library. I love the card catalogue. It makes finding the perfect book like going on a treasure hunt. While I was talking to the librarian, Ari wandered away from the desk and told me he was going to look around. No card catalogue for him, he was a browser.
It took awhile but I eventually located some potentially useful book on linguistics and went looking for Ari. I looked in every section I thought he would be, but he had vanished; I even looked in the bathroom and outside on the street. I went up to the 2nd floor and he wasn’t there. I looked on the 1st floor again. Nothing. I was starting to get worried. I went down to the ground floor level and that’s when I finally spotted him. He was sitting at the microfilm reader of all things. I went up to him to see what he was looking at.
“Hey,” I said.
He jumped. I guess I’d startled him.
“What are you looking at?”
“Nothing. Just old newspapers and stuff. I didn’t realize they had all these old articles on microfilm down here. The librarian just told me about it.”
“Anything in particular you’re looking at?”
“No, just browsing.”
“Just browsing El Paso Times articles from ten years ago for fun? And you call me the weird one?”
“Whatever. I thought it might be cool. Like a time machine or something. Are you done? We can leave.”
He pulled the film he was looking at out of the reader and returned it. I also saw that he had a book with him.
“What’s that book? You going to check it out?”
“It’s nothing. Just about the Vietnam War. I was just flipping through it while I waited for you.”
He put the book back on a return cart and we left. On the way home he didn’t talk much and I could tell something was bothering him. But he didn’t tell me what it was and I didn’t press him on it, even though I really wanted to. Like I said, he was better at not talking about things than I was. I thought maybe if we had our own secret language made up already he’d want to talk to me, but I knew that was wishful thinking. We’d only been friends for about a month, but I’d already guessed what most of his rules were.

Quote
- Pay attention to the flowers - Because of different POV's in part 1 & 2, the lines are worded and/or expressed differently, as well as the facial expressions, in the same scene that's duplicated. - When Sookhee sings, she changed the lyrics from the original song. When Hideko is sleeping on Sookhee's bed, Sookhee inhales deeply and sings "what is this scent?". During bathtub (tooth) scene in Part 1, Sookhee realizes "ah this was the scent". During bathtub scene in Part 2, Hideko says something like "Do you like this scent?" - As per director PCW [Park Chan-wook], who's opening the door for whom reflects the disappearance of class/rank. In the beginning: Sookhee opens the door for Hideko. Middle: Both open the door together End: Hideko opens the door for Sookhee - As per PCW, touching other's elbows has a meaning of someone who lived a life lack of affection. You can see that Hideko keeps rubbing Sookhee's elbows. - A lot of Hideko's lines are cited from what other characters say in the movie. As per PCW, this shows Hideko’s characteristic of being cynical/sarcastic and also being dependent like a baby. - As per PCW, Hideko saying "I who has no one in this world" is a way of her expressing that she would like Sookhee to know that she is watching Sookhee. This was the same line that Sookhee used to describe Hideko when talking to the Count (Hideko was listening). - Director wanted to depict Hideko and Sookhee’s relationship with the symmetry. These are shown during scissoring scene while holding hands and sex scene in the end. - When Hideko recites a lesbian book in front of perverted uncle and guys, she is thought to be imagining Sookhee. This book includes the descriptions of the use of bells, scissoring, biting the shoulder while getting wet down there, etc, etc.. Hideko does what the book says. For example, you can see Hideko biting Sookhee's shoulder during the sex scene that follows. - When Hideko and Sookhee escape from the mansion, Hideko hesitates to climb over the wall. This shows how traumatized Hideko is by Uncle's abuse because she is afraid of the very low wall. Sookhee understands these, runs over to the other side of the wall, creates a small step with the luggage and holds Hideko's hands. - Supposedly, the bell has a lot of meaning; once used to be a method of abuse, but in the end Hideko overcomes this. Bell turns out to be something that reflects her happiness and enjoyable play. It shows freedom from suppression and freedom from Kouzuki. ...Personally, the scene where Sookhee destroys the library and the part where Hideko describes Sookhee as ‘my savior who came to ruin my life’ strikes hard (more powerful in Korean language grammatically because the word ‘savior’ is placed in the last part of the sentence). It's known to be heart-shattering quote for many. Once subbed version shows up, I hope you guys will have fun finding out hidden points/meanings. Entire movie is full of them. ...I personally think that a lot has to do with grammar. As Hideko is describing Sookhee's mother, as well as Sookhee as a thief, pickpocket, con artist, and someone who came to ruin her life, you just don't expect the word 'savior' to describe her as a whole. It just hits you really hard when that word is placed in the end because you get to reflect the whole line once again. Before such line is narrated, during the scene where Sookhee starts destroying the library, Hideko startles and tries to stop Sookhee from ripping the book in the very beginning. This shows how much Hideko had been suppressed and had been kept in the boundary of Uncle's abuse. Sookhee is truly a savior for Hideko because she got her out of that crazy well. And following that line, Hideko says "my tamako", which is her fake name, and then "my sookhee", the real name (when she breaks the snake's neck). I think it also has to do with the tone. I read it somewhere that specific line of narration was actually supposed to be narrated in Japanese with Korean subtitles. But Kim Min-Hee said it in Korean while recording and wanted to keep it that way. The whole crew agreed because it just had that much impact with Korean narration. ...the line "my savior who came to ruin my life" in Korean feels more like this - "you who came to ruin my life, (is) my savior" and the following "my Tamako... my Sookhee" - I understood it as: "you who came to ruin my life" = "my Tamako" "my savior" = "my Sookhee"

if this night is not is not forever, at least we are together
Otayuri Week Day 1: First Times/Confessions
Words: 2.8K
Featuring: DJ Otabek, Artist Yuri, Photographer Phichit and a whole host of drunken antics.
AO3 link
It starts with a doodle in the margin of his art history notes that, when he looks at it from the right angle, looks like Otabek. Then there’s the midnight scrawls in his journals when he pours his heart out onto the page in smudgy ink, and when he rereads them the next day, it’s clear in his mind that the rambles that fill page after page are only about one person. Slowly, bits of Otabek start creeping into his art, snippets of things he’s written in journals, half remembered conversations immortalised in paint, some of the writing covered in angry strokes of red acrylic or made barely legible by the ink running down the page. He’s under his skin, and Yuri doesn’t really know why, or how to make it stop, how to make it go away, or anything that could possibly make the situation any better.
And whilst that might well be the start, it’s not technically the beginning.
“Yuri! You came!” Victor opens the door of his apartment with a smile on his face a mile wide, a drink in his hand and his boyfriend Yuuri clinging to his waist. “Did you bring vodka?”
“Duh,” he says, holding up the bottle. He can hear laughter and music coming from inside, some loud EDM that the neighbours are probably going to complaining about in a few hours’ time. “Who’s here?”
“Everyone,” Yuuri says, swaying slightly. The top few buttons of his shirt are undone and his eyes look kind of distant. He’s completely smashed, but Yuri’s not surprised. Yuuri’s got a bit of a reputation when it comes to parties. “Even Otabek came. He’s DJ-ing”
“The mysterious music student?” Yuri asks, and Victor nods in confirmation. “Nice. You going to let me in now or what?”
-
The music seems to get louder the more Yuri drinks. Someone drags him into some stupid drinking game that ends with him doing far more shots that he usually would do, Victor orders pizza halfway through the night because “you should probably all eat something, Jesus”, and Phichit has brought his camera and keeps taking photos that Yuri’s probably going to have to systematically untag himself from in the morning.
The party is in full swing when Otabek, who’s spent the entire night mixing songs and matching the lights to the music, appears at Yuri’s side. Yuri looks at him, confused, because he’s meant to be at the decks, not here on the dancefloor, until he looks over to the other side of the room and sees that Leo has taken over. “Oh,” Yuri says.
“What?” Otabek asks, a frown settling across his brow. “Is something wrong?”
“No, but you were there, and now you’re not, and I was confused, because you were supposed to be over there and I –” Yuri stops himself from rambling on further and making even more of an embarrassment of himself. “Have you been drinking? I don’t think you’re drunk enough.” Yuri walks over to the drinks table, grabbing Otabek’s hand and dragging him across the room with him. “Shots,” Yuri states, grabbing the nearest bottle of vodka and starting to pour the liquid into the small glasses. “You’re doing two for every one I do.”
“Vodka’s not really my thing.”
“Tough shit.” Yuri pushes two thirds of the glasses in Otabek’s direction. “On my count. One – two – three!”
They do the shots, the disgust on Otabek’s face obvious the further down the line he gets. Once the last glass is back on the table, Yuri grabs his hand again and leads Otabek over to where Chris is sitting with a couple of other people. “Chris! Is it about time for another drinking game?”
“Yuri, you read my mind,” Chris says with a smirk. “Ring of Fire?”
“Perfect.”
The game gets underway quickly, with most people playing. There’s some argument about the rules at first, but it’s soon forgotten as soon as the game progresses. Otabek breaks the circle first, meaning that he has to do another shot, something which he complains about bitterly: “You didn’t tell me that was a rule!”
“I thought it was obvious!”
The game carries on, consisting of some dubious rhymes whenever a nine is pulled from the circle, and groans whenever more gets added to the cup in the middle. Otabek picks up the last king, and Yuri tries not to let the smile show on his face.
“Unlucky, my friend,” Chris says with a grin, passing Otabek the cup that was in the middle. “A delicate mix of vodka, orange juice, coke, wine, and possibly some whiskey as well. Good luck.”
Otabek sniffs the contents of the cup gingerly. “That smells fucking disgusting.”
“That’s kind of the point,” Yuri says. “We –” he starts to sing, and the others soon join in with:
“LIKE TO DRINK WITH BEKA, CAUSE BEKA IS OUR MATE, WE LIKE TO DRINK WITH BEKA, CAUSE HE GETS IT DOWN IN EIGHT, SEVEN, SIX, FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO – AYYYYY!”
The cup is empty and Otabek looks like he’s regretting every decision he’s ever made as he places the cup back on the table. Yuri counts this as a win, yells at Leo to turn the music up, then drags Beka onto the dance floor.
It’s a while later, when the alcohol has truly taken affect and all inhibitions have gone out of the window, that Yuri finds himself invading Beka’s space more, the thoughts of how Phichit definitely has this immortalised on his SD card far, far away.
“Do you, um,” Yuri stops himself for a moment, before thinking fuck it and carrying on, “Do you want to get out of here?”
Otabek looks mildly surprised for a brief moment, but he soon composes himself. “You sure?”
Yuri rolls his eyes and stands on his tiptoes where he pulls Otabek into a rough kiss. “Yes,” he snaps. “I’m sure.”
“Well, in that case,” Otabek says, pulling Yuri in for another kiss, “I’d love to.”
-
And so, that’s the beginning, where Yuri drunkenly hooks up with Otabek Altin at Victor’s party, where he’s 90% sure Phichit definitely got a shot of them stumbling into the spare room together and emerging a while later with untucked shirts and ruffled hair. It doesn’t really hit Yuri until the next morning when he wakes up with a hangover and a line of hickeys down his neck that he actually slept with the guy. He doesn’t regret it, per se, but he just feels a bit weird. He’s not used to casual sex. He doesn’t know the protocol. Is he just supposed to act like it never happened?
He decides that probably best, as he doesn’t see Otabek that much around campus anyway. For the moment, he groans, rolls over and does his best to ignore his headache as he tries to get back to sleep.
-
Because the universe hates him or something, Otabek seems to be around every corner when Yuri gets to university on Monday. After Yuri’s nearly bumped into him on the stairs, in the cafeteria and the library, he’s had enough. He walks into his Art History lecture after lunch and slams his notebook down on the desk with so much ferocity half the class turns around and stares at him.
Mila raises an eyebrow. “Something on your mind?” she asks from her seat next to Yuri. “Mysterious Kazakh music students, perhaps?”
“Can you not?” Yuri snaps.
“So you did sleep with him then? I thought Chris was just making shit up.”
Yuri lets that go unanswered as their professor walks into the lecture hall and starts setting up today’s power point. “So you did?” Mila says, her voice now lowered to a whisper. “Damn it, Yuri, you beat me into Altin’s pants. I’m so jealous. Was he good?”
“Seriously, shut up.”
“I’m taking that as a yes,” Mila says with a smirk that turns into a grin as she notices the smile on Yuri’s lips that he tries to hide. “Oh my god, you lucky bastard!”
Yuri tunes out the rest of Mila’s whispering, listening to the lecturer instead. He tries to focus on making notes, but his pen has other ideas, doodling random stuff in the margins of his notebook. There are musical notes, a pair of headphones, and the beginnings of a portrait that looks suspiciously like –
“Oh wow, you’ve got it bad,” Mila comments as she looks over his shoulder.
“I know,” Yuri mutters miserably. “I know.”
-
The parties that happen next follow a strikingly similar pattern. Otabek starts the night off DJ-ing, then gets drunk with Yuri before the two of them go off somewhere to have sex. Once, it’s in the bathroom at Mickey and Sara’s place. Another time, it’s on the sofa in Chris’ living room when everyone else in the kitchen. Then there’s the time at Emil’s on top of the washing machine, and the one where Otabek pulls Yuri into the hall at Seung-Gil’s to blow him. Yuri’s getting up from returning the favour when Phichit appears around the corner, camera in hand. There’s an awkward moment of silence because it’s painfully obvious what’s been going on before Phichit lifts his camera up, takes a photo, and says “I’m just gonna… go.”
As Phichit disappears back into the living room, Otabek and Yuri make a silent agreement to be a lot more careful next time.
-
Except next time never comes. Otabek stops showing up at parties and Yuri soon does too, because Victor keeps complaining about how miserable he looks and there’s no point being there if Otabek isn’t there anyway. Instead, Yuri stays at home, listening to depressing songs about unrequited love and broken hearts, scribbling his thoughts and half remembered conversations down in his notebook in smudgy ink.
…it’s not fair, all of this, because you were there and now you’re not and I don’t know what to do now that you’re not showing up any more…
…seriously, fuck it all. It’s all your fault anyway. I don’t care if I kissed you first, you were the one that kept coming back for more and that means IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT…
…I’m all fucked up because of you. What have you done to me?
He pretends he doesn’t cry and that Otabek isn’t under his skin in the way he so clearly is. He pretends he doesn’t care, pretends it all meant nothing, pretends that he’s dealing with it even though he’s clearly not.
He plays pretend, and hopes it’ll all go away.
It doesn’t.
-
It gets worse.
Yuri’s moved onto a new project in his practical art class, one that’s centred around letters and words and how they’re used in art. It seems the natural thing to do to use the three am ramblings from his journal as the start of his project, except he quickly realises it’s doing nothing for the healing process apart from picking away at an already barely formed scab.
He works on a big scale and with a limited colour palette, covering A1 sheets of paper in red and grey acrylic, letting black ink drip down the page after spending hours rewriting bits of his journal onto the page. He uses layers, cutting up newspapers and rearranging the words to represent his feelings, paints letters onto bits of paper like Scrabble tiles and pastes them on top of his work.
He wanders into the studio one afternoon after a lecture to find Victor staring intently at his work.
“Why are you even in here?” Yuri asks as he puts his bag down on his desk. “Aren’t you meant to be teaching a bunch of freshmen or something?”
“That’s on Tuesdays.” Victor turns round to look at Yuri, a serious look on his face. “It’s about Otabek, isn’t it? All of this?”
“Who?” Yuri feigns ignorance as he digs his brush roll out of his bag and goes to the sink to fill his water jars. He goes around the art studio collecting the tubes of paint, bottles of ink and scraps of paper that he needs, and by the time he gets back to his desk, Victor is still standing there looking slightly concerned. “What?”
“You’re in love with him.”
“I – what – excuse me, I am not!”
“Yes you are,” Victor says simply. “Just look at your own work. It’s obvious to anyone that was at any of the parties you not-so-secretly hooked up with him at. You’re in love with him, Yuri. You need to realise it.”
-
…I’m crying, because I realise it now. I’m in love with him.
-
“Can you help me with my photography project?”
Yuri’s sitting in the library working on an essay for his art history class when Phichit slides into the seat opposite him, camera bag over his shoulder and a mischievous grin on his face. Yuri stops typing and glares at Phichit over the top of his laptop. “Why me?”
“Because I need a guy with long hair? Also I’m asking you? Please?”
Yuri sighs. “Fine.”
“Great! Are you free now?”
Yuri considers snapping something along the lines of clearly not, can’t you see I’m working, but instead finds himself saving his essay and shutting the book he working from. “I need to go and check this book out, but yeah, I’m free now.”
-
…I was asked to think about a person I love today. And, even though I knew it was coming, I found myself surprised when I started thinking of the sound of your voice, and the feeling of my skin against yours, and all the stolen moments we had together. I thought about you kissing me and how our bodies moved in such perfect harmony together even though we were drunk at the time. I thought about how I liked the marks you left on me, how they made me smile when I saw them in the mirror, how they served as a reminder for a more exciting time. They asked me if I was thinking about you, and I – well.
I said yes.
-
“Talk to me about this,” Yuri’s art tutor Yakov says, waving a hand at the artwork spread across the table. “What’s it about?”
“Love,” Yuri replies simply. “It’s about love.”
-
There’s an exhibition at the end of term in which all the art and photography students showcase their work from the semester. Yuri’s work, which is now on huge canvases that take up most of one wall, is drawing a lot of attention, as is Phichit’s photography work. Yuri hasn’t gone into the photography section yet, he’s been too busy answering questions about his work, but he eventually manages to sneak away.
Phichit’s exhibition is titled Then & Now, and it makes Yuri stand stock still.
The photographs are of him and Otabek. The Then section shows shots from the parties, of them talking and laughing, of them kissing, of them leaving Victor and Yuuri’s spare bedroom with secretive smiles on their faces and fingers intertwined. They’re all in bright colours that stand out from the stark whiteness of the wall, and they’re all vastly different from the Now section of Phichit’s exhibition.
The Now section showcases candid photographs of him and Otabek in black and white, taken in various places around campus. There’s him in the art room working on his pieces, in the library, in a lecture theatre. Otabek is in the music rooms, in the recording studio, sitting on a park bench with his laptop on his knee, his headphones on and a look of intense concentration on his face. The separation between them is clear, and it makes Yuri’s mouth go dry as the message sinks in.
“Heard I was making quite the stir around here.”
Yuri looks to his left where the voice is coming from and feels a smile play at his lips when he sees who’s standing there. “I heard that too.”
“I saw your art,” Otabek says. “It was… something.”
“Is that a good something or a bad something?” Yuri asks with an eyebrow raised.
“A good something, definitely,” Otabek replies. “It’s powerful. Made me think. Are you really… are you really in love with me?”
“Yes,” Yuri says, because there’s no point in denying in, the words I’m in love with him are spray painted in two foot high letters across the canvases. It was obvious to anyone, even if they didn’t know who it was directed at.
Otabek smiles. “Well, then, do you want to get out of here?”
“I’d love to.”
-
…life has a cyclical nature to it. It’s clichéd, I know, but it’s true: everything from fashion trends to the rain falling from the sky happens in a cycle. And now I’m here, drinking with him again with the knowledge that we’re probably going to have sex again later, and although we’ve come back to the beginning, somehow, it’s an entirely new start.

Maybe not that, maybe it was the time when Jeongguk told him that he felt most comfortable with Taehyung than with anyone else in the team, that the bond between them was tight and healthy. If it’s not one of those three things, it could have possibly been the time when Jeongguk told him that Taehyung made him the happiest with the biggest smile on his face while looking at Taehyung so fondly.

How to Focus When You’re Writing
Do you ever find yourself distracted when you’re writing?
I don’t think I’ve ever met a writer who could honestly answer “no” to that question!
Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, checking the news headlines, browsing a few webcomics, answering emails, ordering that book from Amazon you’d forgotten about … there are so many distractions just a click away.
The good news is, there’s plenty you can do to help yourself to focus as you write.
I’ve split my suggestions into three different categories, so you can tackle whichever area you feel is holding you back the most (or whichever is easiest for you to change right now). They are:
How to make your writing environment work for you
What to do before you write
What to do while you’re writing
I’ve also included a bonus tip on something you can do after you write, to help you gradually focus better over time.
How to Make Your Writing Environment Work For You
#1: Get Away from Home
If you normally write at home, try writing in a local coffee shop (or library, etc) instead. This cuts out a ton of potential distractions … and a change of scene can make it much easier to be creative.
Some of my best, most focused, writing happens when I get away for an afternoon, evening and morning at a local hotel. There’s no laundry pile, no dishes, no kids, no TV, and the wifi there doesn’t work on my ailing laptop. I can write for hours!
Even if you can’t get away for very long, just an hour in a coffee shop might be enough to help you get past a creative block that you’ve been struggling with.
#2: Get Rid of Intrusive Noise
When I’m in the writing zone, I tune out pretty much everything (including my long-suffering husband). But getting into that zone in the first place can be tricky if there’s a lot of distracting noise going on.
In our house, “noise” is normally the kids playing / fighting / singing at the top of their lungs. Maybe that sounds all too familiar to you – or maybe the noise you’re trying to block out is construction work going on nearby, or your roommate watching yet another repeat of Friends. Whatever the noise, a pair of headphones will help (I like in-ear ones, because they’re cheap and act a bit like earplugs to muffle external noise).
It’s entirely up to you what you listen to: some writers like to focus with ambient sound from a site like Noisli.com; others like movie soundtracks; still others pick a particular artist, album or even song that fits with the mood of their work-in-progress. Do whatever works for you.
#3: Sit at a Desk or Table
If you normally write while sitting on the sofa, or even while lying in bed, try sitting at a table or desk instead – even if that means clearing some space or rearranging a room. You might find it makes a huge difference to your concentration levels.
As well as feeling more like a “work” space, a seat at a table or desk is likely to be better for your posture than hunching over with your laptop on your lap, or lying in bed with your laptop propped up on your knees. (If you do decide to stick with your sofa or bed, though, you might want to  look into something like a laptop bed tray to make it easier to write there.)
What To Do Before You Write
#4: Make a Plan
Whatever you’re about to write, you need a plan. That might be a few words scribbled on a sticky note, or it might be a detailed document outlining your whole book. But whatever your plan looks like, it’s a vital tool for keeping you on track and focused.
If you begin writing without a plan, it’s all too easy to lose focus. You don’t know where you’re going next – and as soon as you come to the natural end of one train of thought, you’ll probably find yourself getting distracted by something that has nothing to do with your writing at all.
#5: Set a Goal for Your Writing Session
What do you want to achieve during your writing session? If you’re writing, say, a blog post, you might simply want to work through your plan – but if you’re working on part of a longer project, you may need to come up with a specific goal.
For instance, if you’re writing a novel, your goal might be “write the first 1,000 words of chapter 10” or “write the scene with Jo confronting Dwayne”.
If you find that setting goals can be daunting or off-putting rather than helpful, you might want to set a “minimum” goal and a “stretch” goal – that might be “write 200 words” as the minimum and “write 1,000 words” as your stretch goal. Even if you only achieve the minimum, you can still give yourself a pat on the back.
#6: Decide How Long You’ll Focus For
You don’t necessarily need to work with 100% focus for the whole of your writing session. You might decide to focus for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break. (Those particular time intervals are part of the Pomodoro technique, which you might find helpful.) Set a timer to keep you on track as you write.
While the timer is running, your job is to only write – you can’t check emails, go on Facebook, and so on. It might feel surprisingly hard at first to stay focused in this way, but you’ll soon find it becomes more natural.
If you’re fighting a long-entrenched distractibility habit, you might want to use an app like Freedom.to to help you – you can block specific websites, or even the whole internet, for a period of time.
What to Do While You Write
#7: Keep a “Distractions” Notebook to Hand
One simple tool that I find very helpful is a notebook, diary or even scrap of paper where I can jot down distractions. These are often things I need to remember to do (“Order Le Guin book” is on my list right now, because as I was drafting this post, I remembered that the science fiction book group I attend is meeting in a couple of weeks…)
You can use a distractions list not only for “to do” items, though, but also for impulses that crop up. Stuff like “see what’s new on xkcd” or “look up next season of Lucifer” can go on your list, too! Once you get to a break, you can delve into some of those distractions, guilt-free.
#8: Don’t Stop to Look Things Up
How often are you writing a blog post (or a scene of your novel, or a chapter of your book) – only to realise that you need to look up a name or a fact or a link?
And how often do you stop, look it up … and end up spending the next half an hour in an internet rabbit-hole?
I do this more often than I’d care to admit! But as much as possible, I try to not look things up when I’m writing. Instead, I put a [note to self] in square brackets in my draft, so I can come back and insert the name/fact/link/etc later on.
Here’s an example from the draft of this very post:
#9: Don’t Edit While You’re Writing
I know you’ve been told this one already, but it’s a piece of advice that always bears repeating: don’t edit while you’re writing.
Is it okay to occasionally backspace and fix a typo, or restart a sentence that somehow came out wrong? Sure. (Though some “don’t-edit” purists might disagree with me!) However, if you draft a paragraph, change three sentences, draft another paragraph, cut everything you’ve written so far and start again … you’re not going to get far.
If you change your mind about something as you’re writing, just pop the section you’re unsure about into italics. Make a quick note about what you’re thinking about changing (e.g. “remove John from this scene”) and then proceed as if you’d already made that change.
That way, you don’t lose momentum – and you don’t waste time editing something that you might later decide to change yet again.
What to Do After You Write
#10: Record How Your Writing Session Went
If you’ve never tried keeping a writing journal before, give it a go. You could have a document on your computer where you jot down how you got on, you could make an entry in your diary, you could use a notebook … whatever works for you.
Each time you finish a writing session, take a minute or two to note what went well and what didn’t quite work out. For instance, “started well but got distracted half-way by answering an email from Jenny” or “took ages to get going but really got into the flow after a few paragraphs”.
If you keep up your journal for a few weeks, you’ll find that you can spot patterns – and that you become more aware of what does (and doesn’t) work for you.
All writers can focus, and often, being distractible is simply a bad habit. How could you make your next writing session a great one? Pick one idea – or more! – from the list above, and let us know in the comments how you get on.

This Dominican Radio Station Is Run Out of a Brooklyn Bodega There's a humble corner store bodega in East New York, Brooklyn that is offering a lot more than Arizona Iced Tea, Jamaican beef patties, and loosie cigarettes. D D Deli and Grocery, located near the intersection of Linwood Street and Belmont Avenue, hosts La Relambia FM 94.1 —a Dominican radio station that boasts one of the most impressive libraries of Latin music in New York City. For eight years, this institution has served Brooklyn's Latinx population, providing a gateway back to their homeland through the Dominican sounds of tipíco and bachata . La Relambia began as a passion project of Geovanny Valdez, who goes by the name DJ Jova and works as the station's program director. Valdez was born in La Vega, Dominican Republic and at the age of 14 started working in radio as a DJ. When Valdez was 18, he moved to the United States where he continued to moonlight as a DJ while he worked fulltime at a Brooklyn warehouse. Valdez got La Relambia off the ground in 2009. The online radio station was originally called DJ Jova Radio. Valdez ultimately landed on the name La Relambia, which is a Dominican term for an attention seeking fool, because it perfectly described his style on mic. He's since taken on the slogan “DJ Jova the DJ Mas Relambio.” This embrace of uniquely Dominican humor helps La Relambia's audience feel like the station is offering more than just music. Instead, listening to it makes you feel like you are sitting around a table playing dominoes with your closest friends as merengue plays in the background. Since its inception, the underground station’s fan base has grown enough to bring it to FM radio with a 10-mile broadcast range. I met with Valdez and one of his station's DJs, DJ Duende Jackson of the “El Cocotazo Radio Show,” to talk about the community they serve, their overall mission, and the future of La Relambia FM 94.1. VICE: How did La Relambia FM start? Geovanny Valdez: I was working in a warehouse while I was producing my show on the internet. I started the radio station because of [my love for] music and communication. Eventually, I fel ready to start working on the project as a director and programmer. The funds I got working in the warehouse helped me buy the equipment for the station little by little. But it’s still not finished. The space in the bodega was rented to me by my uncle, who liked the project and offered me that small and humble place to make our radio booth. Since then, I have been half president of the Solangie Deli Corporation and the director of La Relambia. How many people do you reach? We have thousands of radio listeners which are difficult to give a number with accuracy. And on the web, we receive more than 40,000 visits per day. Tell me about your advertisers. Most of them are local Latino businesses, such as Toribio Restaurant, La 810 Car Service, Auto Fresh Car, Chimi Monumental, La 510 Car Service, La Finquita, EGM II Metal Manufacturing, Quisqueya Car Service, El Mercadito, Crazzy Willy's Home Furniture Center, Uceta Production. These are businesses that are mostly owned by people of our community. DJ Duende Jackson, how did you find out about the radio station? DJ Duende: We are all DJs, and we work in clubs. When I was in the Dominican Republic, I would work at resorts until I got my own show on a local station there. From there, I came to the United States and connected with one of the directors in charge of this stations. Now I’m working here while I perform sets in clubs in the city. How do you prepare for the shows? We usually make schedules and plan out what were are going to do for each program by the hour. But it's a very loose type of planning. We do more improv than anything. It helps it flow better. How would you describe the personality of “El Cocotazo Radio Show”? We are all jokesters. We play and tell jokes and work well together, but if we ever disrespect each other than we lose that partnership and friendship that makes this show work. It's like a brotherhood—like you're hanging out with the bros. When did you meet your crew? I meet DJ Alex Viva when he tried to steal my girl. [ Laughs ] Nah, I’m just kidding. We’ve known each other for years. I needed guys that I vibe with and could confide in. You know if anything were to happen, we would be there for each other. It would have to be something really big to ever break us up. What's the best part of the radio station for you? The best part of this is to be able to speak to a mass audience. I love to talk, interact, and take calls. The music is what is important too and to see how the audience is reacting to the songs that we play on air is what makes my day. It's a job that we love. What was the best on-air call that you’ve had? Someone called in and said that this show was the highlight of his day. Who are some new artists that you’ve introduced? We have introduced artists like salsa singer Luis Galves, Latin urbano artists like KLE. We work closely with this collection of more than 50 DJ and artists from all over Latin America called CoroVIP. Duende is a featured DJ in the group. How do you choose the music for the show? We live in the United States and that means there are so many nationalities that we try to cater too. We love music, so we try to cater to the cultural music of the majority of these countries. If someone doesn't know the music of one country, we try to introduce that music to the other Latinos who wouldn't have heard it. That’s our job as DJs. We introduce new artists and new music too. How do you continue to grow an audience even though Brooklyn is becoming more gentrified? We cater to majorities of Latinos and that's how we keep our base interested. Instead of listening to the most popular songs of Latin music, you're hearing music that you wouldn’t have listened too otherwise. Like we play Mexican music, Ecuadorian music, Colombian music... These are the nationalities that don't get represented a lot on mainstream Latin music radio stations. There will always be Latinos in Brooklyn. We aren’t worried. Follow Sadie on Twitter .
