Certified Nurse Assistant: Challenges and Competencies
Have you ever wondered what it's like to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant? As a CNA, you take on a demanding but rewarding role in healthcare - providing daily assistance and care to patients in medical settings. CNAs are often referred to as the "eyes and ears" of patient care, monitoring and reporting on patient condition to nurses. It's a job that requires dedication, empathy, attention to detail, and physical and emotional stamina.
I have deep admiration for the work that CNAs do. My goal with this blog is to provide some insight into both the challenges and competencies that are part of the CNA job. CNAs positively impact patients' lives, but the work also comes with difficulties that require resilience. By understanding the trials and growth opportunities of the role, my hope is that we better support these critical frontline healthcare workers.
The import of this piece is that CNAs face a variety of emotional and physical challenges, but build critical communication and patient care competencies by virtue of their role's demands. Let's explore what that looks like on a day-to-day basis for CNAs working in hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
Emotional and Physical Challenges The responsibilities of a CNA are both physically and emotionally taxing. CNAs spend the majority of their days on their feet assisting patients with needs like bathing, dressing, using the restroom, and eating. The physical nature of the job alone can lead to back injuries, bodily strains, and exhaustion over time. Prolonged standing, frequent bending and lifting, and assisting immobile patients weighs heavily day after day.
In addition to physical demands, CNAs regularly encounter emotional challenges that impact mental resilience. CNAs often work closely with both patients and families, listening to their fears and anxieties and providing comfort through difficult health situations or end-of-life care. The bonds that CNAs form make losing patients agonizing at times. Dealing with combative or uncooperative patients also adds stress to an already grueling job.
Managing workplace injuries, infectious diseases, and the risk of workplace violence compounds the strain. In a single shift, CNAs can experience moments of fulfillment, grief, frustration, and fatigue in varying measure. For some, the empathetic nature of the work follows them home impacting mental health over the long run. The attrition rate for CNAs is high, signaling that the role's challenges drive many from the field. However, for those CNAs who can cultivate resilience and coping strategies, the positive of impacting patients' lives outweighs the hardships.
Building Communication Competencies While the daily challenges are intensive for CNAs, the role also equips incumbents to build vital interpersonal and communication capacities. Because CNAs spend so much direct time with patients, they require excellent communication abilities to provide quality care.
CNAs have to connect with patients from a wide range of backgrounds and temperaments each day. Finding common ground, listening actively, and exhibiting empathy and patience enables CNAs to understand patient needs and preferences. Cultural competency is key – respecting diversity and overcoming language barriers allows CNAs to make patients comfortable. These “soft skills” have a very tangible impact on patient health outcomes and satisfaction.
In addition to patient interactions, CNAs collaborate closely with nursing staff and doctors. Learning how to communicate updates about patient condition clearly to medical teams is extremely important. CNAs are the “eyes and ears” catching changes that might require intervention. CNAs also develop communication techniques for diffusing escalated situations whether with distressed patients and family members or confronting workplace violence risks.
The verbal and non-verbal communication fundamentals that CNAs hone through unrelenting on-the-job exposure makes them incredible assets to healthcare teams. Those who leverage these experiences can pursue advancement opportunities in healthcare education, specialized care, or nursing. For those CNAs who devote their career to frontline care, communication talents likely become second nature – when developed intentionally, these are life-long skills. For example, highlighting communication and patient care competencies developed as a CNA on your resume is crucial when applying for nursing roles or advancement opportunities. Using a Certified Nurse Assistant resume example as a template can help tailor your experience to each application.
Developing Patient Care Competencies While communicating effectively is critical for CNAs, having the hands-on patient care skills and knowledge elevates them to trusted caregivers. Some patient care competencies come from formal CNA training programs and getting certified. But much of the capacity CNAs gain for delivering compassionate, detailed, responsive care stems from on-the-job exposure.
Learning how to accurately track and document vital signs, properly move immobile patients, and execute infection control best practices keeps patients safe. These base-level abilities expand both in nuance and speed with repetition. CNAs also become incredibly attuned to deviations from patients’ normal state which prompts crucial check-ins. Noticing sudden cognitive changes, swelling, rashes, and other warning signs for broader underlying issues makes CNAs invaluable patient advocates.
Equipped with patient care know-how and honed perceptivity, CNAs provide both clinical and emotional support during scary or difficult health situations. Getting the chance to stabilize and reassure patients in moments of crisis builds confidence. CNAs start to recognize how their care, while assisting other providers, tangibly impacts health outcomes. It’s through these real-life moments that seasoned medical judgement and skill grow - largely unique to the CNA experience.
Conclusion CNAs undoubtedly shoulder immense challenges - physical exhaustion, emotional tolls, workplace hazards are daily struggles. However, CNAs also gain hard-won competencies by confronting these realities head-on. Communication abilities are honed through relentless patient interactions and stabilization of tense situations. Patient care capacities evolve from having to fluidly make critical decisions the longer they’re in the field.
While the attrition rate highlights why many don’t continue down the career path, CNAs are the backbone of effective healthcare delivery. They make profound differences in the lives of patients and families during intensely vulnerable moments. Beyond just doing the job, CNAs choose compassion - listening, comforting, advising and reassuring even when it takes a personal toll.
My immense respect goes out to all the dedicated CNAs who put aside their own trials for the betterment of those in their care. My hope is that by acknowledging the challenges and sketching the growth opportunities, people gain some insight into this demanding but meaningful work. If this piece makes even one person reconsider interactions with a CNA, choose to better support CNA staff, or pursue the role themselves - then setting sights on understanding this vantage point offered value.

sorry, was thinking about doing domestic things with fiancé!ghost, like making cookies and him messing up something in the process 💀--- cause even though ghost is good at most things, this man does not have a cooking bone in his body, maybe he can make a few simple meals but for the most part ( something you taught him btw ), he'll leave the meals and meal prep to you ( besides, he enjoys ur cooking ). so when you pull him to the kitchen and ask him to make cookies with you, he's reluctant but of course he agrees, ( he'd burn the world if you asked ) though, making cookies is a lot harder than he expected😭
Tumblr media
"si, the butter--- it's burning."
your fiancé, always standing so tall and imposing, is slightly hunched over the stove wearing your pink apron that you had 'forced' ( wouldn't call it that since he literally bent down so you could put it on him but... ) over his head. despite him being so focused on the task at hand, he'd ended up burning the butter rather than browning it.
"ah fuckin' hell."
he stirs it for one moment more before looking down at you, "y'sure we can't use it?" he mellows at your beaming smile, deflating as you shake your head.
"simon, baby, it's basically tar."
˖⁺‧₊˚♡˚₊‧⁺˖ (rehehehehe how simon looks most days when youre teaching him to bake.)

Can we also have Mech Pilot!König? Please!!
König always looks so focused when he's checking his flight suit, tightening the cuffs on his jumpsuit, and making sure the belts are all in the right positions. Whatever he needs to make sure he can properly interface with the mech. You've gotten in a habit of running checks nearby. Swiping through your tech pad you run through the vitals and mechanics, you type in a few code updates as you inspect fuel intake reads. A shadow hovers over you, König leaning over to check your screen. You tip your head back to look at him, his mech hums from its garage.
"Yes colonel?" You ask, his fingers hover near your neck, his mask hanging so you can just see the curve of his smile. His gloved fingers bypass your neck to tap your tech.
"How's everything running?" He asks, his eyes scanning the screen before returning to your face. Somehow the shadows of his mask never seem to touch the blue in his eyes, the darkness in them is always his own. You hold his gaze, remembering the heat of his mouth, the unyeilding metal of his mech holding your legs open. He raises a brow and you hustle to put your eyes back on your screen.
"Perfectly," you mumble, "all systems operational." You fix your eyes more clearly on the screen, actually read the numbers to make sure you aren't lying to your colonel. You squint at the neuro logs, skimming over the spikes and slips. "There's just a little blip in your neural handshake that I want to-"
König shuts off your display, the mech across from your twitches it's fingers. The lights on its face plate glow, it's motors purring, you get the distinct impression that it's watching you the same way König is. "Nothing to worry over," König tells you.
"But I-"
"That's an order," König's voice is harder where he leans over you. Your breath quickens, your eyes locked on the mech as it's head turns to look at you, moving even without its pilot. It's not supposed to do that. "Ignore it," König leans closer, his mask grazes your cheek and your head twitches away from it, "unless you want to lose your commission."
"Roger," you breathe, fingers already moving to delete the neural log. Mech pilots are always a little off, but König seemed to take to it like water. You wonder now if that was such a good thing.

WILCO (John Price x Reader)
You have a rude awakening and John makes a suggestion.
900 words
CW: swearing
feedback welcome as always!
Tumblr media
You wake to your cell phone’s ringtone, blaring from John’s bedside table. It startles you both awake, John jerking nearly upright beside you in bed. You groan and take the ringing phone from John’s hand, clearing your throat before you answer it.
John wilts back into the mattress, dragging his palms over his face with a deep sigh. You pat his shoulder, sliding out of bed to take your call. You realize it’s work calling to see where you are midway down the hallway, your absence eventually noticed. You explain, through your sleep roughened voice, that your home had been broken into the previous night and you don’t think you will be making it in today.
There’s some back and forth about the level of professionalism expected, to simply not turn up considered unacceptable regardless of circumstances. They agree to not write you up due to the extenuating nature of your situation but advise that notice is required when missing a day of work. It rubs you the wrong way, being chastised like a teenager. By the time John joins you in the kitchen in his jeans and t-shirt, you’re already demoralized before the day has begun.
“Who was that?” he wants to know, taking in the slope of your shoulders and the long stare you are giving your coffee mug.
“Work, and honestly, I think I’m going to quit.”
John blinks and checks his watch and raises a brow at you, pouring his own coffee.
“It’s not even 10 am.”
“So what?”
“Awful early to be making rash life decisions, love.” He says archly, taking a sip of his steaming mug.
“Well, no time like the present.” You grumble, gently patting his ribs to make him move when he stands blocking the pantry.
He steps aside and watches you, scratching his whiskered cheek with an air of uncertainty that is unlike him. You rummage around in his pantry shelves, looking for bagels but finding whole grain bread instead. You shoot him a look when he’s still looking at you a few seconds later, waiting for your toast.
“What? I’m serious, I think I’m going to quit. I don’t give a fuck about their bottom line when I’m…what? Temporarily homeless? Shit, I gotta send a copy of the police report to the landlord-”
You set your coffee down and turn to leave your position by the toaster but John catches you, a fond look on his face as he wraps his hand around your wrist.
“Hold on, love. One second. That can wait a few minutes. Eat your breakfast. There’s still raspberries in the fridge.”
“I know, I didn’t want to finish them all on you.”
“Darling they’re for you. Eat them.” John is amused, bringing your hand to his mouth to kiss your palm.
“Yeah?” You can’t keep the elation out of your voice. Your toast pops and you pull away, preoccupied with buttering the slices for a moment.
John retrieves the berries for you instead of answering, sitting beside you at the kitchen table as he slides them onto your plate. You immediately pop one into your mouth, making him smile softly. He fists his hand at his temple and leans on his elbow, watching you inhale berry after berry for a moment before broaching the topic that’s been circling in his brain since last night.
“If you’re still in the mood for rash life decisions, I have another for you. I think you should break your lease and move in here. Live with me, love.”
You freeze with a berry half way to your mouth, eyes widening. You know he hates your apartment. You didn’t realize he was this serious about leaving it behind.
“Really, John? You don’t think that’s moving kind of… fast?”
You can feel your heart thrumming in your chest, nervous suddenly. John purses his lips and shakes his head ‘no’, not taking his eyes off you. His sureness is steadying, zero hint of uncertainty in his eyes.
“Not really. Feels more like home when you’re here, love. Always has.”
John’s tone is soft, and you know him well enough to know he’s being sincere. The moment suddenly feels weighted, like whatever you decide will colour your relationship moving forward. You can’t tear your eyes away from his, the sharp blue of his gaze pinning you in place, demanding a decision in one direction or another. The blanket you gave him catches the corner of your eye, draped over the back of his couch, where it’s had pride of place since it came into his care. It calls up his words from last night, spoken in frustration.
You bite your lip and nod slowly, focusing back on John’s handsome face.  “Alright, I… yeah. We can…I can break my lease.”
The slow smile that takes over John’s face, matches the one spreading across yours.
“I’m going to be honest love, I thought it would take more convincing than this.” He says lowly, hooking his foot in the rung of your chair to drag you closer to his seat. You feed him the forgotten raspberry in your hand, his lips dragging over your fingertips making your stomach swoop.
“I can be more difficult if you like.” You purr, biting your bottom lip and feeding him another berry.
The look between you turns heated but before either of you can act on it, his cell rings, breaking the moment. He leans over and kisses you before getting up to take his call, his eyes lingering on you at the kitchen table.

I just know Grizel cares so much about Fitz.
She's known this boy since he was 14 (?) and she's watching him grow up.
She's hung around him for years, day and night.
She's eavesdropped on his conversations, and she was there for all of the aftermath of Alvar's betrayal.
She watched his world fall out from beneath his feet first hand. She heard the whispers that followed him everywhere he went. She watched his shoulders fall.
She probably watched him bake treats for his friends. She probably watched him cry and grieve. She probably dragged him out of his bed and showed him how to work out to get out of his head. She probably reminds him to eat, and to get some vitamin D. She probably listens to him pace his bedroom well into the night. She probably listens to him talk to Mr. Snuggles when he's really overwhelmed and just needs a friend who won't judge him.
She'd die for this little sad, short-tempered baby who has done nothing wrong ever in his entire life. And her heart aches for him. For the way he can be surrounded by people, but still be so lonely.
She probably knows him better than most people just off of observation alone.
idk man. we never talk about it. and the friendship angst/potential is immaculate.
