Welcome to the Trove!
Since my main blog is cluttered, I've decided to attempt to rectify that by posting a clear set of links and reblogging comics in a decent order.
For more information on the characters involved, see my Main Blog or my Toyhouse page!
Please know that this story contains themes of Death, Religion, Trauma, and other potential triggers. My internal filter can be a little off at times, so I apologize if something isn't labeled properly. I try my best. :<
THIS POST IS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND WILL RECEIVE CONTINUOUS UPDATES
If anyone ever notices a link not working or going to the right place, let me know at @loupy-mongoose (or comment here) and I'll try to fix it! (I'm aware that Chrono Links/Links in general don't work for some people--Specifically Android users, I believe. There is nothing I can do to fix that, but if you click and drag the link to your browser/search bar/whatever, it might work that way.)
Whole Linden Roots Chrono (Not yet formed.)
Evidently there's a limit to the amount of links I can add. Due to this, I will only include individual links the most relevant story beats.

I have been planning to do the story for these characters in comic form because of a perception that writing would be mostly ignored, due to attention span and general attractiveness and such. But @loupy-mongoose recently made the jump despite having similar fears and I havent noticed anyone being upset or a substantial drop in engagement, and it has me wondering if I'm doing too much.
I have always been and will always be first and foremost a writer. I've been doing it since I was 8, it's one of my biggest passions in life, and it's a big part of my career plan. Drawing meanwhile is a casual hobby that takes a long time for me to make and is often frustrated by my physical limitations, like bad hand tremors from the past few days.
The storytelling would be a lot like recent linden roots entries with suplimental images and comics scattered throughout the narrative, because there are still bits I really want to show visually. Asks would still be similar with some being answered visually and some just having the character(s) talk.
Let me know what you think of it!

TOYCON PH 2022 – THE BIG SHOW RETURNS FOR A GRAND HOMECOMING!
Tumblr media
For long-time TOYCON fans, it’s no secret that Voltes V holds a special place in this convention’s heart. This iconic robot has never missed a spot among the collage of colorful characters on our poster since the very start, and on special milestone years it has even become the central symbol of our show, with the huge Voltes V statue in 2016 when we first moved the convention to the SMX in Pasay, the fleet of Voltes V ships gracing our 2017 merchandise, and TOYCON’s launch of the Tamashii Nations Super Electromagnetic Machine VOLTES V, Bandai Spirits DLX Soul of Chogokin in 2020.
It’s been too long since the community of pop culture fans and collectors have come together since the pandemic struck. For many, this long drought without any gathering to celebrate our common love for all things creative, innovative and collectible has gone on way too long. And so with the effects of CoVid winding down, we just cannot wait to see you all, our fans and loyal community, finally come home.
And this year, our 19th year of putting on an onsite convention, Voltes V takes center stage again as part of a promise made by our event partner, Quiccs, back in 2019 to launch his trademark TEQ-63 in unmistakable Voltes V style only at TOYCON! And this year, in partnership with TOEI Co. Ltd. Telesuccess, we’re all set to finally launch it! At the heart of the Voltes V story is a tale of a family divided, of struggles suffered and surpassed, but ultimately a reunion of love. Which is really what TOYCON is about too, isn’t it?  It is a yearly reunion, and for this year, a homecoming, as we return to the place where it all started.
Tumblr media

and you were a velvet one
My second piece for @hwsrazzledazzle, about the dissolution of Czechoslovakia and independence of Slovakia and Czechia respectively. Below the cut is the footnote I have featured in the anthology, as well as some more personal thoughts!
The Velvet Revolution of 1989 marked the end of a single-party Communist rule in Czechoslovakia; this ushered in the return of a parliamentary democracy, and in 1990 the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic held its first free elections since 1946. The future of the republic and its two halves seemed bright and promising at the time—what no one foresaw was political breakdown that would lead to Czechoslovakia’s dissolution and the creation of two new republics, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, on January 1st, 1993.
In hindsight, however, such development had a long precedent rooted in Czechoslovakia’s beginnings itself—the two republics had been on different grounds when they joined together as one, with the Czech economy more industrialized and urbanized than its Slovak counterpart, which had remained primarily agrarian under Hungarian control. This would set the stage for an imbalanced relationship for the years to come, where the Czechs saw themselves as the capable half to push the nation forward and perceived Slovak demands as a sign of ingratitude, and the Slovaks read this Czech dominance as a sign of a centralization that left out Slovak voices.
While it has often been characterized that the root of Czechoslovakia’s breakup lay upon Slovak nationalism, examination of events leading to the dissolution suggest it was Czech political unwillingness to concede to Slovak long-held grievances that gave way to the rapid degradation of the two republics’ relations.
Despite this, the dissolution of Czechoslovakia had been overall an unpopular one—while better-received amongst the Slovaks, the common sentiment according to opinion polls was that neither side wanted the dissolution to happen.
Some notes:
Slovakia’s in what is today called Slovak National Uprising Square; initially I was going to have him in Hlavné námestie (literally Main Square) because the NY Times article reporting the event at the time described it taking place in Bratislava’s ‘main square’; I had to hunt down pictures and news reel footage and then compare and contrast the scenery on Google Earth to confirm the fireworks were indeed coming from the former.
The majority of the comic, however, takes place in a vague ambiguous version of their shared chata; I like to think Czechia and Slovakia both built one right in the middle of their border, and it still exists to this day.
A common Czech and Slovak marriage tradition is to break a plate and have the couple clean it up together to symbolize the hope of said newlywed couple working together through their marriage; unfortunately, this plate never got properly cleaned up.
The tree I featured is a linden, which was the national tree of Czechoslovakia and still is for Czechia and Slovakia; the linden also has associations in Slavic folklore with fertility and rebirth.
Again, something I wanted to capture was that feeling of being in the situation as it was happening; nowadays, I like to imagine they’re both glad for their divorce, but I imagine feelings were more mixed as it was happening. I also want to emphasize that this is primarily from Slovakia’s perspective.
Whether this conversation was happening in real time or not, I’ll leave it up to your interpretation : )

I know I've been pretty plant-heavy in my comics lately. They're just such a wonderful and fascinating kingdom of beings! I love how some trees just don't seem to bother so much with boundaries and will happily grow together. That may give us mammals the heebie-jeebies to think about, but it's one of the things that I think makes plants really cool.
Species portrayed: sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)
Transcript below cut:
[Drawing of two sycamore trees rooted in the ground but becoming one partway up the trunk. The background shows more individual trees on green hills.]
Did you know...the roots, branches and trunks of two trees can grow together in a process known as inosculation.
Similar to grafting in orchards, inosculation typically happens between trees of the same species, though in rarer cases two species are involved. These are most commonly trees with thin bark, such as ash, beech, linden, willow, maple, and sycamore.

How the Mortal Kombat Movie’s Main Character Renews the Franchise
https://ift.tt/3bFLvhm
The grandiose, auspiciously R-rated, new movie take on classic ultraviolent video game franchise Mortal Kombat is arriving sooner than you might think. Moreover, thanks to studio Warner Bros’ recent move of setting up its entire 2021 slate of films for day-and-date streaming debuts on HBO Max, the crimson-spilling cinematic scenery will be witnessed by audiences from home this April. However, in a potentially odd divergence from the game’s mythos, it has been revealed that, amongst an ensemble of classic Kombatants, the film’s star, Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2, Wu Assassins), will play a completely original character.
Warner’s Mortal Kombat reboot movie, helmed by first-time feature director Simon McQuoid and notably produced by James Wan (director of DC’s Aquaman and its developing sequel), will feature an immense ensemble of characters immediately familiar to the generations of gamers who have controlled them to lacerating, limbs-ripping results in the fighting franchise. Now, Warner has officially released the film’s first images and new details have emerged from the movie from EW, intriguingly revealing that the story will primarily be told through the eyes Tan’s main character, Cole Young (pictured immediately below), a struggling mixed martial artist who collides with an unfathomable destiny connected to his unknown heritage and a birthmark resembling the famous Mortal Kombat dragon symbol.
“When we first meet Cole, he’s in a really bad spot,” Tan tells the outlet. “He’s down on his luck. He’s kind of a washed-up MMA fighter who used to be a champion, who used to believe in himself, who used to have a lot of hope in his career. And it’s all gone down the drain. It’s a very interesting place for a hero to start, and I think that, along the journey of Mortal Kombat and Cole discovering where he comes from, you’re introduced to all these other iconic characters and elements that everybody loves so dearly.”
Warner Bros. Pictures
Indeed, the assembled cast lineup of Mortal Kombat reads like a text version of a “choose your fighter” screen, featuring traditional protagonist Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Sonya (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Mileena (Sisi Stringer), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Kabal (Daniel Nelsen), Nitara (Mel Jarnson) and, of course, the game franchise’s shapeshifting original big bad, Shang Tsung (Chin Han). Consequently, Tan’s Cole sticks out like a sore thumb amongst this array of characters, making his status as the apparent main character even more head-scratching, especially if you were hoping for a more puritanical adaptation.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Yet, the massive mythology of the 1992-launched fighting game franchise and its myriad follow-ups will figure prominently in the new Mortal Kombat movie, which is revealed to open with a crimson-strewn 10-minute prologue fight sequence in set in Feudal Japan between Sanada’s Hanzo Hasashi and Taslim’s Bi-Han—who will eventually become flame-spitting skull-face Scorpion and freeze-firing “cryomancer” Sub-Zero, respectively—with both men initially depicted as members of rivaling ninja class. Additionally, said sequence will bear a symbolic significance to an iconic element from the game, since it also features the fact-based ancient short blade, the Kunai, which Hasashi—eventually as the undead Scorpion—famously hurls as a harpoon to make victims “get over here.” Unassumingly, the blade enters the story as a gardening tool used by his wife. Elements like this are an example of why McQuoid implies that the movie will be defined by blood—literally and figuratively, explaining to EW, “Blood represents a connection. Blood represents who we are. Without getting too overcomplicated, what we did is use blood executionally.”
Warner Bros. Pictures
So, where would an average-Joe of sorts American MMA fighter like Tan’s Cole find himself with a setup of that scope? This would be especially vexing if the film features monsters like the four-armed giant, Goro, or the hulking, super-powered outer-dimensional despot, Shao Kahn. Well, it seems that the real-world grounded premise of a down-on-his-luck prizefighter will serve as the fish-out-of-water, point-of-view method by which audiences will be re-introduced into Mortal Kombat’s encompassing, arguably-intimidating mythology of martial arts and mysticism.

Mortal Kombat: The Definitive Video Game Movie of the ’90s
By Matthew Byrd
In fact, one could speculate that Tan’s Cole, as a de facto Western civilization-bred stand-in, is a modernized substitute of sorts for the game franchise’s American fighter, action movie star Johnny Cage—who fulfilled that plot purpose in the beloved 1995 movie with comical subtlety, as played by Linden Ashby. Cage is notably missing from the reboot movie’s revealed lineup of fighters, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see him referenced in an Easter Egg of some kind. However, presenting a stark contrast from Cage, Tan describes Cole as a fighter with a diverse skill set (complementing heavy hands with Muay Thai, Judo and Jujitsu,) and a “salt-of-the-earth-grit” that he compares personality-wise to loquaciously bellicose UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal. So, in lieu of Cage-like egotistical comic relief moments, one can expect a profound arc for Cole; one that eventually ties into to the overarching mystical plot.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Thusly, Cole seems to be the accessible vessel by which audiences will enter the famously ultraviolent tournament and its deeper sci-fi elements, staying true to Mortal Kombat’s roots as the renegade fighting game to which fans who’d grown weary of the comic-booky approach of bellwether arcade offering Street Fighter II would pump quarters, embracing its schlocky-kung-fu-movie-inspired aesthetics and, of course, the ability to permanently maim and/or kill your opponents with post-match “fatality” moves. In fact, star Tan explains unequivocally how the film fully takes advantage of its R-rating, further revealing, “There are some crazy fatalities.” He adds, “We’ve picked a couple of iconic ones. There’s a lot of really cool signature moves that you’ll see, a lot of Easter eggs that we snuck into the film, but there are some really badass fatalities that I can’t wait to see on the big screen. They’re brutal, man. They, they don’t hold back.”
Of course, Mortal Kombat’s R-rating provides a further divergence from the PG-13 designation of the films to which it will inevitably be compared, 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. However, despite the bounty of brutality, McQuoid does hint that he had to temper himself, and “didn’t want to get into NC-17 territory.” He adds, “It’s amazing how quickly you can get there. It doesn’t take much.”
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Mortal Kombat starts its initial streaming run on HBO Max on Friday, April 16. In the (literally) immortal words of Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s original movie Shang Tsung, “It has begun!”

// FAVORITE COMIC HERO : BLACK ORCHID Powers: Adaptive / Agility / Chameleon / Chemical Secretion / Danger Sense / Empathy / Flight / Healing / Intellect / Invulnerability / Longevity / Mesmerize / Pheromone Control / Plant / Control / Shape Shifter / Stamina / Super Strength / Unarmed Combat
I won’t deny the fact that the first thing that captured my attention according my favorite Comic character, was firstly superficially the name, as we happened to share the same one.
Reading further about her and her powers, made her even more appealing and interesting, since the character is also considered a figure of the feminist movement.
Black Orchid could fight crime by infiltrating criminals using her ability to disguise perfectly.
Regarding her story before before becoming The Black Orchid, the character originally named Susan Linden was a childhood sweetheart of the contemporary botanist Philip Sylvian. However, later on Susan married Carl Thorne, an abusive individ who she met working in Monaco.
The marriage escalated and when Linden turned for help to dr. Sylvian she was found and killed by her former husband Thorne.  Dr. Sylvian however, was able to bring her back to life transformed into a hybrid between a plant and a human. Transformation during which Linden gained her powers and also the name “Black Orchid”. Black Orchid perfectioned the art of disguise and could easily get close to criminals in order to find incriminating evidence regarding them.Most of the time it was hard to discover her involvement, until the person would be found bound and gagged with a black orchid next to them, which was her signature.What is an interesting twist, which differentiates this Comic from most of the others, is indirectly breaking somehow that static well-known formula where the Hero usually found in difficult situations tends to escape and revenge sooner or later.  However that is not the case in this one, giving so the story an unanticipated twist, where the heroin is immediately killed following her capture.

# CREATING MY OWN COMIC CHARACTER
“There's nothing worse than a female superhero who's all male gaze'd up with gratuitous crotch-shots and poses that are physically impossible if you have internal organs.”
Therefore, I want to create a superhero character who fights an actual specific injustice taking place currently in the world and is known for her contribution to a cause more than for “a little cute costume”, the perfect hair and unreal body proportions.
// NAME: SLAYAGE
// SUPER-POWERS:
// STORY:
Slayage (born a male: Elyesa Halil Hamal, later after gender transformation known as: Asma Dagmara) is a transgender woman born in Chechnya (an autonomous republic of Russia, located in the North Caucasus, near the Caspian Sea, in southern Russia), in 1996. During her teenage years she found out her sexual orientation to be what her culture, family included considered a “sickness, deviation of the normal” and was not at all accepted.  Therefore she was put in psychiatric ward, regarding  the following statement from her parents: “Either we will kill you, or we will lock you up in a psychiatric ward and throw away the key. The only alternative is that you undergo an exorcism.” Left no other choice Hamal decided to obey to her parents will and attend one of the “Healing” practices of the psychiatric wards which relayed on old religious techniques of exorcism. As she went through horrid brainwashing techniques, treated as she was possessed and tortured constantly, she did not accept being “healed” Therefore she was cent in the horrid concentration camps and was left with no other chance but to take her own life.  She finds wolfsbane plant blooming around the camp and she knew that the roots can cause paralysis of the cardiac muscles or the entire respiratory system resulting so in death. During the Middle Ages, witches used the wolfsbane in their "flying" potions because of the feelings of dizziness and numbness brought on by its irregular heartbeat side effects. In a bunch of minutes the officers around the camp found her body paralysed in the ground and decided to throw it where they threw the rest of the bodies, where nobody would approach to search, in radioactive territory. After being dumbed there, Hamal not only did not die, but there was an unknown reaction that happened between the wolfsbane poison in her system and the surrounding extreme radioactive pollution by suddenly giving her the strength to get up fully recovered and realising that she did not only change physically but also she gained super-powers. Hamal realized that she could release a powerful concentration of wolfsbane root poison, her chromosomes also switched giving her the so desired female gender finally, she could jump long distance and run extremely fast, she could easily climb vertical surfaces, and lastly her skin could turn purple by making her untouchable by bullets or sharp objects. Hamal renamed herself Asma Dagmara, name she always dreamt to have when she was still a boy. Dagmara had read about the famous botanist Philip Sylvian that helped The Black Orchid with her transformation so she headed there to France, to ask for his help in understanding what was happening with her too. Sylvian was amazed of this “nature’s” creation without the interference of any scientist, and after a lot of tests he was able to explain her what she was capable of. Sylvian was also so terrified hearing of the horrid story of her life, so he decided to help her build her character and make sure she could use her powers to the fullest in order to head back in Chechnya and put an end to the terror caused in her community. Dagmar went through a detailed training program, that put her closely in touch with her new powers and lastly she gained the superhero name “Slayage” and wore the new costume that enhanced her powers and her natural body shield. Ironically though, dr. Sylvian found out that a single drop of wolfsbane could kill her, and as well the body shied did not work on her head, so he made her a head titan shield which made her slower in moving but more protected. In the end of the training Dagmar was so grateful to the professor and full of gratitude headed to Chechnya to start her mission. First people she wanted to deal with were her family, but of course she had no heart to kill them, therefore she only sneaked in the house, told them she was there to revenge on her son and many more like him, in people like them and left them in horror and panic.  Slayage relocated herself in the radioactive fields, feeling safer there where nobody approached and also where it all started, and created her little lab in one abandoned building and started one by one haunting down officers, people of the religion, government, families, and anyone who had anything at all to do with putting her community in the horrible concentration camps. Her last aim, and the cherry on top would be Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader, after the declaration that  “If we have [gay] people here, I’m telling you officially their relatives won’t let them be [gay] because of our faith… Even if it’s punishable under the law, we would still condone it”. and also “you cannot detain and persecute people who simply do not exist in the republic.” Slayage was portrayed by the media, as a demon of devil who was trying to overtake the country, and that was present there exactly because suddenly people were accepting homosexuality.  However this did not stop her, haunting down every person that went missed from her community and the person in charge for the disappearance. In every case she’d kill them with her poison and then leave them half melted covered in a viscose purple solution.  Slayage continues her mission till nowadays and has saved hundreds of people and killed hundreds more on the evil side as well. Evidence for the existence of real radioactive zones:

"Mortal Kombat"- A classic piece of 90's cheese... and also a very entertaining fantasy-adventure romp.
I'm not going to try and convince you that 1995's "Mortal Kombat" is a spectacular film. Heck, I'm not even going to try to convince you that it's particularly good. Inspired by the brutal arcade games, the film is little more than a broad piece of "fluff"... a shallow bit of entertainment filled to burst with only the most common of cliché and trope, with an emphasis on effects over substance and action over drama. It's cheese, plain and simple. And yet, director Paul W.S. Anderson's film has gone on to become something of an icon for children of the 90's. A pop-culture phenomena that is still widely beloved. Even its brilliantly goofy techno theme-song is still a standard at many a nightclub and house- party. It's elevated itself beyond its boundaries and is now often regarded as a classic of its decade, fondly recollected by those of us who used to obsessively rent the VHS at Video King every weekend. Oh, it's cheese. But it's delicious, nostalgic and entertaining 90's cheese. A group of Earth's greatest warriors- including the vengeful Liu Kang (Robin Shou), special forces agent Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson) and washed-up action-star Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) are united by Thunder God Raiden (Christopher Lambert) to take part in a legendary tournament known as "Mortal Kombat." The goal is to pit fighters from various realms and dimensions against one another to find the greatest warriors in the known universe. However, should a world lose ten consecutive tournaments, they will be at the mercy of the victor- in this case, the dreaded "Outworld" has won nine against Earth, and the treacherous sorcerer Shang Tsung (Cary- Hiroyuki Tagawa) is eyeing his tenth victory so that he may conquer the Earth for his emperor. And so, our heroes must try and save the planet with the help of Outworld princess Kitana (Talisa Soto), who seeks retribution for the death of her parents at the emperor's hands. Yes, the plot sounds very silly, and indeed it is, often being summarized as a fantasy riff on the classic Bruce Lee film "Enter the Dragon." But it's not the main focus here. Merely a backdrop to help deliver what the film excels at, which is the development of highly likable characters and wonderfully thrilling action sequences, with at the time mind- bending special effects. You'll find yourself very much willing to forgive the somewhat shoddy story development for these very reasons. The fantastic casting of our lead actors and the witty dialog helps us care and root for our heroes. Shou is fantastic as our "chosen one" hero Liu Kang, a man haunted by the death of his brother at the hands of the dreaded Shang Tsung. He's got a dark streak as a result, but also a very humanizing and identifiable sense of wit, and will occasionally snap back with a clever comeback or joke to remind us that he's not just a blank-slate, but has a likable personality despite his turmoil. Wilson is quite good as Sonya, who similarly has a chip on her shoulder thanks to the death of her partner. She's sort-of the most serious of our group, and while the role may come off as flatter than the others as a result, she plays an invaluable role thanks to evening everyone out. Ashby is a wonderful addition, and is the closest we have to a traditional comic relief. Formerly a famed actor, Johnny is now a bit of a diva, but Ashby wisely plays him as being just self-aware enough to know that he needs to grow up to become a better person. But he never quite lets go, leading to some golden moments of comedy. But Lambert and Tagawa steal the show in their roles as Raiden and Shang Tsung. Lambert seems to be having the most fun he's ever had, and he uniquely interprets the all-power Thunder God as having a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor, which I found very welcoming. He's just detached enough from mortality to not quite be able to fit in with the other heroes, leading to some nice "culture clash" moments of humor. And Tagawa just chews the scenery in the perfect way as our fiendishly entertaining villain. He knows he's crafting a character that you'll love to hate, and he plays the role to perfection, with a childish glee. The action is the other big highlight here, and even more than twenty years later, I think it generally holds up. This was one of those first big, sweeping martial-arts hits in the United States, and we hadn't seen anything quite like it at the time. The concept of a tournament featuring fighters from different worlds and dimensions allows for some splendid and entertaining mash- ups, so no two fights are quite the same, and there's good variety. There's also a really nice natural progression over the course of the film, so the stakes really ramp up with each passing action beat. Director Paul W.S. Anderson has a really keen eye for scope and composition, and knows how to perfectly frame a shot and cut together sequences to make for some great gasps and winces from his audience. And he knows just the right moments to supply enough levity for us to catch our breath before hitting us again with an even more intense martial arts battle. It's splendidly directed and structured and there's never a dull moment. In the end, "Mortal Kombat" may not be a great film. But it is great entertainment. It's a fun and wild relic of its time, and I know that for this fan, it'll always be a movie I pop on now and again for nostalgic kicks. I give it a very strong 8 out of 10 for this reason. Pop on the nostalgia goggles and get ready to have a fast, fun time.

Slight vomit warning for this one. Not explicit, just a little heads up.

And there we have it! It's official--Akoya's expecting! I know a lot of you had that figured out, but I wanted to wrap it up neatly. Besides, Lav needed to hear it, too. :)
Now I need to turn my attention to Asks, because I've gotten quite a few!
