Wet Beast Wednesday: remoras
Sometimes you just want to go with the flow and let someone else do the work. That's the mindset of a remora, this week's topic. Remoras are eight species of the family Echeneidae, divided into three genera. These fish are famous for suctioning onto a larger animal and going for a ride.
Tumblr media
(Image id: a remora attached to the shell of a sea turtle. It is a long, slender fish with a black stripe going down its sides. Its lower jaw is pointed and facing upwards. End id)
Remoras differ in size depending on species, with the largest reaching 110 cm (43 in) in length. Their most famous feature is the disc on their backs. This disc is a heavily modified dorsal fin that consists of flexible membranes. When pressing the disc up against a surface, the membranes can be flexed to create a vacuum and provide suction in a similar manner to a suction cup. The Remora can then scoot backwards to increase suction or swim forward to release the suction and detach from its host. Remoras also lack a swim bladder, forcing them to actively swim to maintain their position on the water column. Fortunately, remoras don't really need swim bladders where they're going. While they can swim and survive on their own, remoras prefer to attach to a larger animal like a bigger fish, shark, ray, or cetacean. When there is a close interaction between two organisms it's called symbiosis. There are three types of symbiosis: mutualism (both benefit), commensalism (one benefits, the other is not positively or negatively affected), and parasitism (one benefits, the other suffers). The relationship between a remora and its host is likely either mutualistic or commensal as the host appears to suffer no downsides.
Tumblr media
(Image id: a remora seen from above to emphasize its disc. The disc is oval and takes up about 30% of the upper body, starting just behind the mouth. The disc has many rows of darker stripes where the folds are visible)
A remora gets several benefits from being attached to a host. Being in close proximity to a larger animal protects it from predators closer to its own size and gets it a free ride. The ride also helps force air over its gills, keeping the remora well-oxygenated. There are two main methods fish use to keep water flowing over their gills. Ram ventilation occurs when a fish is swimming and their motion through the water forced the water over the gills. Active ventilation requires the fish to actively move water over its gills, often by repeatedly opening and closing its mouth. Both methods require the fish to expend energy, but tests on remoras determined that active ventilation is more energy intensive than ram ventilation. A remora on a fast-moving host can get the best option, using ram ventilation while letting someone else expend the energy of moving forward. Multiple remoras can live on a large enough host and it is speculated that sometimes mated pairs will share a host. It was previously believed that remoras would feed on scraps of food from the hosts meals, but it is now known that they derive most of their nutrition by eating the hosts feces. They also consume bits of dead skin and parasites from the host, which is a lot less gross. This cleaning of skin and parasites is why remora relationships with their hosts are considered mutualistic rather than commensal. There have been reports of hosts attempting to dislodge their remoras through methods such as breaching, so its possible there are situations where the relationship is unfavorable to the host, such as too many remoras attaching. While remoras are very streamlines, too many of them would produce drag, which would be a bad thing for the host.
Tumblr media
(Image id: a manta ray or similar species seen from above , with two remoras attached to it just behind the cephalic fins. End id)
While remoras are most famous for attaching to a host, they are capable of living on their own. Juveniles are known to live in shallow coastal or reef areas, sometimes acting as cleaner fish. As adults, they move out into the deeper waters, in search of hosts. Most knowledge of remoras come from their behavior when attached to a host, so there isn't a lot we know about how they behave on their own. They are believed to have different diets, being more active hunters who feed on small crustaceans, squid, and fish. We don't know a lot about non-attached remoras, but we know even less about their reproduction. While remoras attached to the same host might become mated pairs, their mating season, mating habits, and what happens to their offspring is not known. All we know is that eventually juvenile remoras will turn up in coastal areas, but what happens between then and spawning is a mystery.
Tumblr media
(Image id: a manta ray seen from below with many remoras attached to it. End id)
Remoras popped up in roman folklore as the echeneis, a small fish that could attach to boats and slow them down. Pliny the Elder blamed the echeneis for Mark Antony's loss in the battle of Actium, where poor maneuverability was one factor in his loss. A use for remoras has been in fishing, where a remora is caught, has a line tied to it, and then released. When the remora attaches to a host, the angler can pull in the line, pulling the larger animal in with the remora. The IUCN classifies all species of remora as least concern, except for one, which is data deficient. The largest threat to remoras seems to be threats to their hosts, so conservation of hosts like sharks, whales, and sea turtles will help conserve remoras by default.

This was a shorter and less intensive WBW than most of my posts. What can I say, I felt lazy and decided to put in little effort, instead coasting on larger, more successful posts. If only there was an animal I could use as a metaphor for this situation. Can't think of anything, though.

🐠 Daily Fish Fact: 🐠
The Common Remora and its host seem to partake in a symbiotic relationship; it does not seem to have a negative overall effect on its host. The host provides the remora with fast-moving water to bathe its gills, a steady flow of food, transportation, and protection. The remora benefits the host by feeding in part on some of its parasites. The common remora's attachment to one host can last for up to three months. During this time, the remora can move its attachment site if it feels threatened.

Finally A Win
Threat number one: Redivi Duxile Strength, heightened senses, and worst of all, the ability to cast someone out of their body in under a second. His nigh instantaneous suspension is nearly impossible to combat.
Nearly.
Countermeasure: Distraction. Kenshe’s wheelhouse. Duxile’s had a long time to perfect his powers, but they still take some effort on his part. His focus is the key. You just need to act fast. Compared to him, the others are easier. There’s room for mistakes. Room to breathe, to think, to misstep and redirect.
Threat number two: Remora Ofidis A highly skilled combatant, practically unstoppable in hand-to-hand. He’s known for his bloodthirsty rages, and few can escape him when he’s on a rampage.
But he won’t be on a rampage, will he?
Countermeasure: The simple fact that he won’t kill without permission. There’s only so much he can do when made to hold back.
He’s the least of your concerns.
Threat number three: Zerkev Pravus. A brilliant tactician with a perfect record, lauded as one of the greatest military minds the fleet has ever seen. Quick on the battlefield and even quicker to think.
Everything you aim to be, but better.
Countermeasure? Easy.
Your father would never hurt you.
That’s the thing with you, isn’t it? You’ll never take on a challenge that poses any real threat to you. Every risk you take is calculated. Everything you do is self-serving. Every move you make is something that will help you.
And yet, the entire time you were ruminating on how to work Sonny into your escape plan, you never once entertained the idea of asking her to use her powers.
It wasn’t too difficult to factor her in anyways. She’s another piece to keep track of, sure, but she really didn’t change much in the end. You still plan on leaving quietly, before the moons rise. You still have it all worked out.
Best case scenario, you’ll have her and Kenshe out before any of the senior citizens have risen.
Worst case… Well, facing all three of them at once, you guess. But that seems unlikely.
It’s a simple mission in theory: Get the girls to their pick-up without being spotted, return just in time to gloat. You’re anticipating anger. Lots of anger. Decreased funds from your dad, most definitely. Might get banned from some events for a while, too. The closest one can get to grounding their adult child, shy of whatever the hell Redivi had going on with his missing kid.
You heard about it from Veylin. Asked her why she bothered putting herself on the map for a handful of strangers, why she threw away sweeps of hiding just to get three dudes out of Thorezille.
“Can I tell you a secret?” She had asked, hands folded in her lap. “I think… More than anything, I did it for me.”
You guess you can relate.
The sun is setting when you creep downstairs to test the doors. First the front, then the back. Two exit routes, both unobstructed and free of obstacles. No alarms, no motion sensors.
Slowly, you unlock the back door and turn the knob, opening it all the way to see if it creaks. Nope. Smooth as a whistle. Still, you don’t know just how good Duxile’s hearing is, and the handle clicks when it moves. Best to leave things unlatched, just in case.
You ease it just about closed, stopping right before the mechanisms can connect, and tiptoe back upstairs to get the girls.
Sonny’s face lights up when you rouse her from her slumber, eyes wide and shiny as she processes your presence. Not the usual reaction people have to seeing you, but you’re not complaining. She knows what this means. Knows there’s only one reason you’d be hanging over her, shaking her by the shoulder in the earliest hours of the night.
You help her out of bed and wake Veylin while Sonny gets ready to leave.
There’s not a single sound uttered between you as your party of three gathers at the top of the stairs. You only get one shot at this. You can’t risk screwing it up.
They both know what to expect. Veylin knows what you need her to do if one of the wardens shows up. You know she can handle Remora.
You hope she can handle Redivi.
With sword in hand, you lead the girls downstairs, where light steps and sealed lips take you all the way to the living room, your exit in sight. So far so good. It won’t be hard to evade Ofidis’ peacekeepers once you’re out of here. You nod at them both and approach the door.
A heavy dread settles in your gut as you draw near.
It’s closed.
You snap your head back around to scan the room, fist tightening around the hilt of your blade. Nothing else appears out of place. Could it have closed on its own? Some doors are designed to do that.
No use stressing. It will only make you sloppy.
“Kenshe,” you whisper, speaking as you turn to look at Veylin, “can you feel if anyone else is–”
When your eyes land on hers, there is nothing behind them. With a start, you whirl to look at Sonny, now standing with the same vacant expression at your side. You snap in front of her face, wave a hand past Kenshe’s. They’re completely catatonic.
Oh shit.
Your adrenaline spikes. He’s here. Hiding somewhere. Watching you.
And you didn’t even make it out the door.
With a deep breath, you straighten your posture and relax your shoulders, letting the panic roll off your back like water. Nibbling mindlessly at the side of your pinkie nail, you sweep the room again, calm as can be.
That seems enough to end his game of hide and seek.
“Mallum.” You snap your gaze towards Redivi as he reveals himself in the darkness of the living room, tone almost pitying as he allows his skin to come alight. “I shouldn’t be surprised.”
You eye him warily, palm still curled tightly around the handle of your sword. You knew this was a possibility. That he might act faster than Veylin, might get the jump on you. What you couldn’t have predicted was being here to witness it. He could have cast you away just as easily as the other two.
So why didn’t he?
“Didn’t realize you’d be up,” you manage, voice low.
He doesn’t try to move any closer, eyes flitting to your weapon once before returning to your face. “I’d like to have a word with you.”
Oh.
You see it now.
You’re still one of them.
“Okay,” you say tersely. “We’re having words.”
"Mallum,” he says again, softly. “I understand you are upset. Will you talk to me about this? I want to help."
“Help?”
He glances at Veylin and Sonny, briefly, before his focus is back on you. You and your sword. He’s remaining cautious. “These actions did not come out of nowhere. I cannot help but feel that I hold some amount of the blame.”
Now that’s interesting.
Your face softens, more perplexed than hostile. You let your fins relax and loosen your grip ever so slightly, waiting for him to go on.
“You felt unappreciated.”
“I did.”
“Understandably so. We did not treat you with respect.”
So that’s the angle. He thinks he’s better off if you like him. He’s trying to talk it out with you, to show you the respect you so desperately craved.
When you don’t respond, he continues. “We have not been fair to you, Mallum.”
You know that one. Names don’t need to fall from Sonny’s mouth to invite trust in another. You’ve used this trick yourself. How many times will he say yours, you wonder.
“I’m sorry.”
You blink, breath stalling for a moment as the words leave his lips. You’re in the middle of betraying him, and he apologizes to you?
You slump your shoulders slightly, all your bravado withering away. That was all you wanted to hear. That was it. How hard would it have been?
You search his face for a moment, brows knitting together and fins folding in. His gaze is sympathetic, his posture relaxed. You drift closer to him, rapier all but falling from your fingers. You’re sure you look almost on the verge of tears.
How badly did you just want to be seen? To have your frustrations acknowledged? Look how kind he is. You’ve aligned yourself with the enemy, and still he extends a hand. Gracious indeed.
You ghost just a step closer, grimacing like you’re holding back a sob. He eyes you warily, still cautious, but he already knows he’s done it. He’s won you over, given you exactly what you needed to come crawling back onto their team. Just a little validation. That’s all it took. He’s too warm, too kind, too open to refuse.
You make to set the weapon down.
And then you lunge.
He makes a noise as you thrust the blade between his ribs, something between a cough and a cry, pained and wet. His hand closes around your wrist before you can draw back, nails digging into your flesh as something wild and furious flashes across his face.
“You are one manipulative fuck, aren’t you?”
He bares his fangs at you, and you catch a glimpse of something truly monstrous beneath the cracks in his veneer.
When he sees the fear in your eyes, his snarl twists into a grin.
It’s gone in a second, replaced by a gasp and a grimace as he releases your wrist to clutch at his head. You yank your sword out and he presses a hand to the wound, face contorted in pain.
His head.
You risk a glance over your shoulder to see Veylin with her eyes screwed shut and her palms pressing into her skull, shaking with the effort she’s employing. It’s working! You were right!
You dare to peek at your wrist and immediately toss your gaze away, stomach churning at the sight of your own blood. At least that stupid fear can be useful for once. Kenshe needs all the emotion she can get if she wants to keep Redivi too overwhelmed to work his illusions.
There are footsteps thundering down the stairs. So much for not facing all three of them at once. Should have knocked on wood.
Shockingly, Zerkev gets to you first, assessing the situation in all but a second. He glances at your injured wrist, then locks eyes with you, the gears turning in his head. Oh fuck.
He’s already coming at you, reaching for your arm. You know exactly what he’s planning to do. Get your blood in front of you, and you’ll be down for the count. You both know it.
Remora is close behind him, skidding to a halt just beside Redivi and looking around with bewildered rage. His growl is almost deafening when he sees the green blood dripping from your sword, and his entrance pulls your attention just long enough for Zerkev to get a hand around your forearm.
He grits his teeth, trying to wrestle it into your line of sight. No. No, this can’t be happening! This has to work. You need this plan to work.
“You really don't want to do that Zerkev! You have to check on Redivi first!” Sonny’s voice rings out behind you, forceful and desperate.
Like flipping a switch, he loosens his grip, giving you just the opening you need to get the fuck out of dodge. You toss Veylin over your shoulder, the cerulean still pumping the room’s emotions straight into Redivi’s skull, and throw the door open, barreling outside and tugging Sonny after you by the arm.
Remora is on you guys faster than you thought possible, grabbing Sonny’s wrist to pull her out of the way of you. She makes a noise when he does, drawing his attention for the briefest of moments. His gaze meets hers, and you’re almost certain you see him loosen his grip.
“Hey, Redtooth! Eye on me, pal. You wanna know how easily the sword went in?”
The fury that overtakes his features is almost bestial. You have no doubt he’s angling to sink those jagged teeth directly into your throat, and you’re not planning to stick around and let him. With his focus back on you, you take off running, hoping Sonny has enough sense to follow.
Behind you, a massive thud and a shout. “Remora, don’t!” Zerkev, doing exactly what you’d hoped he would.
Saving your life.
Well. Not exactly the clean escape you were hoping for, but it works. Redivi bleeding out on the carpet, Zerkev and Remora too occupied with their conflicting goals to work together.
The consequences for this might be a bit more severe than a canceled credit card. Hopefully the car has room for one more.

Remi, Rema, and Remo, the Remora Alerts! They wander the Plex and alert the Security Staff and Security Boys if there is a disturbance or a break in. Remi is the ring leader and a big cuddle bug, Rema is a smart and kinda grouchy lil gal, and Remo is just a curious lil guy. They are just the tiny dogs that alert the big guard dogs when there is an intruder, basically. They can’t do much damage, but they can send a signal (mainly to Brix) so that the Security Team can handle it. They do however like to “play with their food” before the big guys show up, so they pull pranks and cause mischief with the trespasser, sort of like Kevin in home alone, but like, three of him. They are very agile and very quick, and they don’t have a voice box. In addition to wheels, they can switch them out for magnetic and/or sticky soles so that they can travel on any surface. They are mainly Brix’s helpers, and they love hanging out with him when they can. If they aren’t watching the Plex, they can be found in Brix’s pool, or swimming with Brix in the water ways that are woven throughout the Plex. Sometimes the human kids can be mean and junk up the water propellers/gills in their sides with food and trash, and they can’t do their job properly until they visit P&S.

Two very, very blue scries! I made the aether one before realizing that an undertide would be perfect for this color. I call him Aquarium! (I know, how original.)
Aether scry here, undertide scry here! (Don't look at them for too long, else you might start feeling a little blue.)

Regularly-scheduled NOISZ SL Propaganda/j
Happy Pride Month.
As such, I'd like to make a recommendation of a game I feel has great LGBTQ representation, that's written by LGBTQ people: NOISZ STΔRLIVHT, available on iOS and Android.
You play as the Producer for the idol group STΔRLIVHT. As musicians around the world are suddenly disappearing, STΔRLIVHT nearly finds themselves meeting the same fate, until a mysterious woman named Beyond grants them the power of the NOISZ.
The group members strength their bonds, fight musical monsters from another world, and learn more about the complexities of each other's lives.
It's a bullet-hell rhythm game, consisting of 4-key (aka 4k) sections cut between (and on higher difficulties, overlapped with) moving your character around the screen to dodge bullets.
The game has a variety of queer characters (although those whose existence/queerness are spoilers will not be mentioned).
Sera and Grace are two members of the main idol group and are playable characters in battle. They're also dating and have been since the end of middle school. They have a kind, supportive relationship where Sera's extreme ambitiousness (leading to getting overwhelmed) is supported by Grace's kindness. Grace's extreme selflessness is supported by Sera's powerful affection. They complement each other well.
They have two love songs: Done in Love by Iris, and First Star by Synthion, the latter of which is the tutorial song. Both are available as charts, but they do cost money for the Clover Club Pass and Dia Club Pass respectively.
The beginning of Sera and Grace's relationship is the central focus on the prequel visual novel game 2ECONDS TO STΔRLIVHT: Forever My Diamond, which is available on Steam, and on mobile as part of the free prequel VN 2ECONDS TO STΔRLIVHT+.
There are recurring event alts in which Sera and Grace wear each other's casual clothes, and honestly, I love that so much. Good for them.
Hakuno is canonically a trans woman, this fact being the central plot point of her and Sumire's prequel visual novel 2ECONDS TO STΔRLIVHT: My Heart's Reflection. A heads-up about MHR, the game does depict transphobia, misgendering, and family confrontation and does give warnings for it on boot-up. There is an option to obscure misgendering language; however, this only censors out incorrect pronouns/gendered terms with asterisks.
Grace's, Sera's, and Hakuno's queerness are directly mentioned very early in the main game's story, too, during Chapter 0.IV.
The game doesn't shy away from these aspects when it's relevant to the plot, but that also isn't the entire point (unfortunately, I can't name said most central focus, as I'd consider it a spoiler). The story juggles a few main threads throughout, and some of those happen to focus on queerness.
There is representation outside of STΔRLIVHT, too: Rhyme (who is sapphic), Han (who is non-binary but doesn't show up in-person after MHR), and even the Producer herself can be sapphic if you select the option in which she comes out to STΔRLIVHT.
The representation is well-written, but that's a natural side effect of the story overall being very good. There are a lot of details that lend well to analysis, and some lines with very clear double-meaning that I fangirl over every time I see them. The characters all feel nuanced, even the antagonists. I don't know how to encapsulate what I like about the story, but I think the writing style and content work well for what it's trying to do, I'll say.
The way it builds on the lore established in the original NOISZ and the re:||VERSE DLC is very interesting, too. It very much messes with your expectations if you've played the original NOISZ, but then your knowledge comes in handy for understanding the plot later on. The connections are fascinating, in both how clear some are and how unclear others are. I'm excited for how the second half of the story will wrap things up.
The game is also very fun outside overall, and that's another reason I recommend it. The bullet hell and rhythm game work together very well, and there's a lot of fun, creative charting. Stellar song selection too, especially for an indie game, with a great pool of originals (although access to many of those is paywalled). Got some absolutely great musicians on for that like Camellia, Synthion, Iris, Soleily, Nhato, and Reku Mochizuki.
Anyway, that's what I wanted to say.
