A Kurt Schaffenberger-drawn 1966 comic book ad for the Captain Action action figure. Schaffenberger was, at the time, exclusively working for DC Comics, so this was his first (and probably only) time in his career drawing the non-DC characters like Captain America, Sgt. Fury, The Lone Ranger, The Phantom, Steve Canyon and Flash Gordon.
I really wanted a Captain Action figure, but only for his ability to become various superheroes, which were pretty much non-existent in the action figure world back then. Actually, young me would've probably been happy with just the Superman outfit.
Me sainted parents, however, could not be sold on the idea, as I already had a G.I. Joe and that should be good enough (neither of them were keen on superheroes or comic books). Even when I begged them just to get me the Superman outfit so I could put it on my Joe (I'd've made it work somehow), they wouldn't budge.

Forces in Combat No. 1, dated 15 May 1980. Clever use of the sergeant stripes in the background to give a taster of the strips inside.
The main cover image of Sgt. Fury is interesting. It looks like the work of John Severin but I think it has been put together from different sources. The panel below is from Sgt. Fury No. 45 (reprinted in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos No. 140 and also appears in this issue in black and white).
It's drawn by John Severin and, although not the Fury character, the torso, gun and the flashes from the gun appear to be the same as on the cover of this issue. Fury was also rarely depicted with a MP40. It's possible the head and legs came from other issues as is the possibility the rest of the figure was drawn by one of Marvel UK's house artists.

Below is an ad for the first issue that ran in other Marvel UK titles at the time.

Forces in Combat ran for 37 issues and merged with a newer title named Future Tense. The Forces in Combat name only stayed on the masthead for one week which must be a record.

Out Now, Coming Soon And A Review
Tumblr media
I've been working on projects I'd put to the side while also writing my work-for-hire stuff. Hence, the lack of a post in a long time BACK ISSUE #141's Spies And P.I.'s themed magazine has been out since January. Get your paper and/or digital copies here before Nick Fury runs out of cheap cigars. My spotlight on Marvel's Sgt. Fury And His Howling Commandos comics is anong the fine articles in that issue. The SF Crows Nest even has a review of the entire tome here. Check it out.
BACK ISSUE #145, 146, 147 and 150 will also contain articles I've written. Plus I'm hoping to announce some other projects coming soon. I'll ttalk more about the future issues of BACK ISSUE when they come out. For now, all I can say is I'm proudest of #146's piece. Take it easy, everyone, and enjoy yourselves. Until next time, I wish you...
All The Best,
James Heath Lantz

Loving the "Antagonists" section of Sgt. Fury #15:

Just the idea of Nick Fury engaged in mortal combat with, like, a framed photo of Hitler.
