Ryu Number: Don Adams
Don Adams was an American actor, best known for his role as the incredibly skilled yet incredibly clumsy secret agent Maxwell Smart in the secret agent spoof sitcom Get Smart. If you don't recognize the title—which, fair enough, it aired literally sixty years ago—he also notably voiced the dimwitted cyborg police officer protagonist of the Inspector Gadget cartoons.
He has a Ryu Number of at most 4.
Tumblr media
The last portion of Space Quest V: Roger Wilco – The Next Mutation features our titular protagonist infiltrating the SCS Goliath, making use of its cramped, labyrinthine maintenance tunnels.
Tumblr media
Apparently someone in development thought the passageways a bit reminiscent, video-game-wise: Take the right wrong path, and Roger will speedily crawl in the other direction with an unexpected cameo on his tail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in the Spinal Frontier is fully voiced, including—as you may know already because @ryunumber—noted disc jockey, announcer, and voice actor Gary Owens. Normally this wouldn't be enough to count the actor themselves, even if they are credited in the game—but persist past the end credits and fade-out and you'll hear the narrator thank you for playing Space Quest 6 before extroducing himself specifically as "Gary Owens, signing off." Totally counts!
Finally, guess who got himself a copy of TV Land Presents Blast From the Past?
Tumblr media
Mind, it's such a jalopy of a game I couldn't get it to run on my computer without serious graphical issues...
Tumblr media
... but I was able to get it to run just runnily enough to confirm its nature! If you ever wanted to play a game where TV stars of a bygone era ask you trivia questions about the shows they were on... then you're not exactly choked with options, are you?
Gary Owens pulls double-duty here, playing both quiz host and TV star questionmonger, his questions focusing on the sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (where he was the on-screen announcer).
Tumblr media
Don Adams' questions, of course, have to do with Get Smart. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any clean, non-glitched-out footage of him from my recordings, so have this video I extracted from the game files instead.
You know what? There's a charm to it.

I have been seeing this particular trend for our comfort characters and I ended up doing it. Instead of my OCs, I picked my big three (my Smash Bros. mains). Bowser, Donkey Kong and Young Link have been around since Melee and I rarely do any pics with these three as I used to. But I still use them for Project Arcana.

Those Peach Showtime costume stars must be very powerful
I've noticed that Swordfighter Peach is very clearly left-handed, while Cowgirl Peach is very clearly right-handed.
Tumblr media
I knew those costume stars and their «Smash Direct trailer»-styled transformations run on magic and such, but holy cow the stars' magic must be powerful.
Bonus topic: According to Super Mario Wiki, all the new Peach forms have Spirit battles to their name? I thought Smash Ultimate had ceased all development some 18 months ago or so. I should get screenshots for the sole purpose of uploading them to the Wiki, but I need to re-set up my Elgato first (which is an absolute nightmare to do).

Discourse over Super Smash Bros. Ultimate literally shaped a piece of internet vocabulary.
It started with "Scrimblo Bimblo" For those not in the know, fans of Smash Bros. are notorious for having a hatred for the Fire Emblem characters on the roster due to the fact that they occupy so many spots on the roster, half of them have playstyles that are derivative of Marth's moveset, and can kind of bleed together visually which earned them the "Anime Swordsman" moniker.
Tumblr media
The arrival of characters like Shulk and Cloud only compounded the notion that too many "Anime Swordsmen" were taking up roster spots that could have been filled with more visually distinct or more nostalgic characters from other game genres, specifically platformers (and even more specifically, Crash Bandicoot, one of the biggest fan requests) One tweet however changed everything when it coined the phrase "Scrimblo Bimblo" a catch-all to describe platformer mascots as sort of a counter to "Anime Swordsman"
Tumblr media
Scrimblo Bimblo caught on quick by frustrated JRPG fans who were tired of being talked down to and they finally had something that got under the skin of people who kept shitting on their favorites. The two sides fought back and forth until the DLC for Ultimate ended, but Scrimblo Blimbo ended up leaking into other sides of Twitter and Tumblr where it took on a whole new meaning outside of it's original origin
It somehow got twisted into "Skrunkly Scrimblo" which became sort of a term of endearment. It's meaning is flexible but seems to commonly used for "funny little guys" or something that's cute in an almost ugly or pathetic way
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eventually the Scrimblo was dropped from Skrunkly, and Skrunkly took over this specific definition And finally today, Scrimblo (without the Bimblo) has sort of made a resurgence, now has just become an overall term of endearment for not just a favorite character but for anything or anyone
Tumblr media
Isn't that interesting? A term born out of fandom bullying to put down a persons personal taste ended up circling back around to become a term of enjoyment and affection. And it came from the funny platform fighter that lets you kick Sephiroth's ass with Minecraft Steve

Ryu Number: Alice (i.e. of Wonderland)
Okay, I know what you're thinking. K.C., are you really churning out a post on Alice's Ryu Number? Sora is in Smash, for goodness' sake. That's Kingdom Hearts, which gets you the Disney version split-lickety.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that's true. And it would be perfectly reasonable to shut the book on the matter right there and shout, "Problem solved!" But here's a question: Are Alice of Wonderland and Alice Liddell the same person?
That's a rhetorical question, by the way. If a century of Alicologists aren't going to come to an agreement, an opinion off the end of a tumblr post is unlikely to set off a scholarly paradigm shift. For what it's worth, Lewis Carroll himself seemed to consider Liddell and the literary Alice as separate individuals—the latter as more of an idealization than any real person*—but he's got some investment in the matter, so he's not exactly a reliable source.
(This is a joke. Don't at me.)
*Woolf, J. (2010). The Mystery of Lewis Carroll. St. Martin's Press.
... But we're not here for literary analysis, of course. We're here for the Ryu Numbers. So what's Alice Liddell's?
The most obvious route, of course, would be through American McGee's American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns video games. The lore of the second game straight out gives Alice the surname Liddell...
Tumblr media
... and the opening cutscene of the first game features a photograph in Alice's bedroom of someone who might be Lewis Carroll (which is a bit weird, but whatever), as well as an Alice storybook (meaning Alice exists one narrative layer higher than the literary Alice).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...That said, if American McGee did mean for the game Alice Liddell to be the Alice Liddell, that's something it looks like he walked back in game two (or at least went in with plausible deniability about). Game Alice seems to have had just the one sibling, an older sister named Elizabeth, and her father's name was Arthur—the real Alice, on the other hand, had nine siblings in all (jeez), with her only older sister named Lorina and her father named Henry.
(Also all the Wonderland elements explicitly take place in Alice's head, which means technically we shouldn't be counting Wonderland characters any more than we'd count characters that show up in dreams or hallucinations, but I'll pretend not to notice if you pretend not to notice, alright? Call it the Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. precedent.)
Tumblr media
To get to something plausibly Liddeller, I'ma jump back to the Apple II/Commodore 64 era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, the Laurence Yep? Aunno, maybe! I wrote to him once, because I wanted to know if the Charles Edward Stuart that appears in this game is actually Charles Edward Stuart, or just the White King believing himself to be Charles Edward Stuart, both of which seemed likely enough to me given the setting.
Tumblr media
I never got an answer back, probably because I couldn't find any contact info for Laurence Yep and ended up writing to the most recent publisher of his works I could find instead. What I'm saying is that I doubt Mr. Yep ever laid eyes on my letter before it was slam-dunked into the nearest wastebin (Mr. Yep if you are reading this please DM me).
Anyway, shortly before Alice falls into the rabbit hole, gets swept up in the usual Wonderland annoyances, then finally makes her way up and out the same rabbit hole (i.e. no "it was all a dream," it's happening for realsies), Alice runs into a dude on a boat. It's Lewis Carroll, and you know he's Lewis Carroll because he says he's Lewis Carroll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Add that that he's a teller of stories to this Alice, and and it serves as good implication as any that the player character is the historical Alice Liddell.
