The Sign of the Devil, Oscar de Muriel
The Sign of the Devil, Oscar de Muriel
5/5 stars!
A wonderfully-thrilling final book to the Frey and McGray series, The Sign of the Devil is full to the brim of twists and turns with family secrets revealed and bombshells dropped mercilessly throughout. It was everything I had hoped it would be and so much more.
Multiple grave-robberies? Murdered asylum patients? The sign of the devil reappearing everywhere? Nothing is adding up in…

You know, it's so crazy to me. Because Cellbit is going on this...murderous rampage, and he practically (flat-out?) told Bagi he doesn't really care who's with him, just who's against him. The evidence is starting to stack up against him. His absence is being noted across the server. People are investigating on their own and coming to conclusions.
And yet...
And yet island residents keep on putting themselves in the way.
Cellbit and Foolish have such a strong relationship regardless of their differences that Foolish is willing to throw Bad—Bad!—under the bus to try and cover up Cellbit's involvement.
Cellbit and Bagi had such a strong connection during their childhood that it has carried across 15 years of absence, to the point that Bagi lied to Cucuruchito's face, taking the fall in order to protect him.
Cellbit and Bad's background runs so deep and so closely that Bad is even considering sacrificing (or at the very least, altering) a plan that has clearly taken months of work to put together just to try and help him get back to normal.
Cellbit and Roier's relationship is strong, and everyone knows that, but it's to the point where Roier is willing to throw himself down this rabbit hole with Cellbit, consequences be damned.
Hell, even Pac—the man that he tortured, hurt, tried to kill back in prison all those years ago. Even he promised to help Bagi try to help Cellbit.
Cellbit continues to try and sacrifice everything for those he loves, over and over again. We saw it with Felps and the Federation, we saw it with Roier and Abueloier (sort of), we saw it with Richas and those investigations that threatened his life, and we're seeing it again here with Bagi and his wider family.
He keeps trying to sacrifice himself. To cut his losses, fly away, leap off the edge. But his connections, his friends—his family ties are so strong that they will consistently yank him back down to the solid, firm ground.

canon divergence where the poison kicks in earlier/harder, and so instead of having their Dramatique Divorce Hatefuck Fight in the east sea, Di Feisheng gets to whatever beach he's going to storm the sigu sect/fight Xiangyi on etc, and finds Li Xiangyi face down in the sand, poisoned to shit and barely breathing, clearly in zero state to fight because of the near death experience he is currently, uh, experiencing.
no worries though, Di Feisheng has medicine demon on call. Clearly whatever the fuck is going on here is uhhhh Incredibly Sus, given someone has now tried to murder both of the leaders of Sigu sect and apparently actually succeeded killing 1/2, but honestly, not really Di Feisheng's problem! his problem is getting Xiangyi back into fighting shape and then, y'know, fighting him. best of luck to the Sigu sect but he's different.
except of course he -- and everyone else on the boat, one assumes -- rock back up to medicine demon's weird offsite lab living situation, and medicine demon is like good news boss I recognise this poison! bad news boss it's super ultra fatal and also the poison is coming from inside the house alliance
which is very extremely no bueno, both because uhhh who the fuck betrayed him like this he needs their heads on spikes yesterday, and also because what the fuck do you mean there's no cure, fucking work one out!
long story short: di feisheng spends the next mmmmm several years laying low, maybe kinda faking his death/seclusion a little by implication of dropping off the map after a big duel was meant to happen, while he and the few people he's sure he can trust go right the hell through the Jinyuan alliance trying to find all the people who betrayed him.
and also playing the world's scariest nurse/buddy cop duo to Li xiangyi, who is not yet dead of poison thanks to medicine demon's questionable approach to medical ethics and informed patient consent, is very fucking angry about life, and very fucking determined to find out who murdered his shixiong and made him break the treaty under false pretences.
(and also poisoned him, he guesses).

hold on is the reason why colin banned external electronics and refuses to go near cameras because he knows he'll be watched by the audience? like how in tma the audience can be interpreted as a metaphorical (or literal) part of the eye, the audience of tmagp watches the o.i.a.r team through technology (phone recordings, the computers, cctv footage)
i guess thats why colin has much less screen time than the others
