Lighting and Mike and Will and El - Full Analysis (Pt.10)

This will be the burial only because holy fuck is there a lot here. The car scene, although important to the burial and tied to it, would make this far too long.

Because with that tripple take, Mike managed to tripple the amount of analysis I need to do here.

I’m about to crack this bad boy open like a walnut.

S4:E5 - Tripple Take

While most of this scene is pretty mellow for lighting, this part stands out. Will was the one to hold up the pen and paper but this contrast a bit startling. They’re all yelling at Argyle but Will is lit quite differently.

An establishing shot here for the burial. The light in this shot, kind of reminds me of Will’s glow lighting a little bit. I’m not convinced that it’s referring to that, but I thought that it was an interesting comparison to be made.

This is the normal light for this scene. All of their faces are cast in the same way and there isn’t anyone glowing without a discernable reason just yet.

The same thing here.

And here. Mostly. We do see Will’s face begin to shift more in to the light, which is noticeably softer than the light on Jonathan’s face.

Mike’s face is very neutral in this scene. We can clearly see his expression and there isn’t any shadow or light obscuring that, unlike how we see the other characters in this scene. While Mike’s face is suspiciously neutral and easy to read, the others faces do have casts of light and shadow that somewhat obscure our view of them.

Mike, Argyle and Jonathan’s faces aren’t all that different, I will admit. The differences are pretty subtle. Like the natural light on Jonathan’s face that obscures some of the details on his face and general shading that’s harsher than Mike in this shot here.

Compared to Will, however, we can see that the sunlight has begun to glisten on his face. This -from previous establishment of perspectives that place will in angelic/glowy lighting- indicates that Mike is looking at Will.

It’s also interesting how Will is such a large part of this shot with Jonathan when the conversation is mainly between Argyle and Jonathan. Will pipes up a few times but not really enough to make him this prominent in the composition.

However, this does make sense considering that Mike is our narrator and the appearance of glowy lighting on Will says that he’s paying attention to him. That would shift the focus to include Will in the frame because Mike influences what we see.

Without El here, there’s no flipping of the narration. If it did flip to one of the others, we would have had some soft of signal. Like an Over-The-Shoulder shot or a POV shot to indicate that, hey! this person is in charge now.

The lighting on Will and on Jonathan is pretty different. Jonathan has light on his face but it’s a normal amount of light for burying someone in the desert. Will is glowing. Will still doesn’t need to take up half the frame here.

Another thing; we don’t see much of Mike during this conversation. The camera angle here is similar to Mike’s positioning on the other side of the grave. The glow on Will does already tells us what’s happening here, but the camera angle really solidifies it.

It also explains the tripple take a little more. And the long wistful shot’s of Will peppered throughout this scene.

This shot of Jonathan and Argyle is just another to show the contrast between them and Will. But it also shows Mike’s perspective a little more. This angle could very easily be Mike’s eye line. It’s importnat to keep this in mind when looking at Will as well.

But this is here mainly for the contrast.

And what a contrast there is.

These are the wistful shots of Will I mentioned earlier. He’s in the center of the frame now, and cast in his angelic/glowy lighting. This shot of Will is still taking up the same space of the ones of him and Jonathan. If we were simply looking at Will’s reaction to the situation, it would make far more sense to zoom in on his face.

But Mike’s perspective of Will is across the grave. So we get his view and subsequent camera angle.

Here we can see where Mike is in relation to the rest of the group a bit better. We can also see Argyle’s rainbow socks in this scene. (Because rainbows come in pairs. Argyle also isn’t my sole example of this, we just haven't gotten to the other ones yet.)

We can see here how the camera angles are coming off of Mike. the wide shot of Will and how he’s tilted to see Argyle and Jonathan match up with his positioning.

This may or may not be Will’s perspective. It’s hard to tell here without a glimmering beacon of light shining from his face, but looking at the angle of the camera it’s possible. Mike’s face here also has slightly brighter lighting on it than previous shots of him did.

This shot here is from behind Mike. We’re seeing his back to the scene. Everyone else we can see but Mike. It’s showing us that we’re looking at this play out from Mike’s perspective.

There is a difference between with shot,

And this one in terms of lighting. The perspective of the previous frame wasn’t at an angle Mike would see Will at. That’s why his face lost light. But Here, when we’ve switched back over, Will’s face lights up again.

The tripple take makes so much more sense if it’s already been established that Mike has been looking at Will. Will has been glowing this entire time, they are burying a body, someone just died in front of them. Like Rink O’ Mania, how we see Will doesn’t match up with how he should be feeling.

But to Mike, Will looks like the god damn sun.

This isn’t Will’s perspective. We got a bit of that during the apology when Mike’s face started to shine as well. Mike’s not shining here at all.

But Will has been the entire time.

The tripple take was exactly what it looked like; Mike got caught staring at Will.

The long, wistful shots of Will here, the lighting, Mike’s placement in the scene are all saying that he was starring at Will. Mike is shot like our narrator because he is.

He’s just been starring at Will the whole time, and that’s why it seems like Will is the one we’ve been following at times.

Because our narrator can’t stop looking at him.

i swear to god being content with the knowledge of how much you don't know is actually the hardest thing in the world like

there's just so much stuff that exists in this universe it's utterly crazy to think that you can virtually never run out of things to discover. there are so many things you could do and skills you could master and people you could meet and places to visit and so many little events that would make your heart beat so fast it feels like it'll explode that you'll just never have the chance to run in to. and on one hand, yeah, that's great! it means there will always be curiosity and wonder and there'll be no end to the human ability to fall in love with new things over and over and over again!! and thats really wonderful, honestly

but at the same time, isn't it just agonising to think of all the things you'll inevitably miss? all the things you never would've conceivably ran into the knowledge of anyway but that still exist in the same microcosm as you, just barely out of your reach? because you can't know everything- there just isn't the time. like you could be constantly one conversation away from meeting a person who completely flips your life on its head, or how you might never truly know how other people perceive you, or the fact you likely wont be able to figure out just how deeply things like the butterfly effect have engrained themselves into your life to lead it where it is. you could be forever accidentally skirting around the answer to that one question you've held on to your whole life, be one opportunity away from something finally changing. we will never know what it feels like to exist as another person. within our lifetimes, we won't know the true extent of what exists in space. there'll be animals or ancient beasts discovered we turned up too early to get excited about. we won't know if there is anything we could've done to prevent our every misfortune, and we won't know how to do everything, whether that be playing any instrument or speaking any language or just existing in the way that's the best for each of us

i mean, it's probably better this way, honestly. curiosity is absolutely insatiable and what would humans be without it? what would an existence be like where there is nothing to wonder about anymore? boring, probably. things probably wouldn't seem as special when everything can be explained away just like that. it's fun to find magic in the mundane! and i guess it's better to look for that every day and just accept that fact that i won't ever be able to truly figure out everything i could ever want to know

still, doesn't mean i'm completely unbothered by it

this is nuts. it's been three years. "i didnt let you in to what i was doing, going after karvanista" it's been Three Years to yaz. does she even remember that fight. i mean im sure she does but not the specifics. it must be such a dizzying experience. like a wormhole. the doctor tying this day to that day in 13x1 which is like, approximately the same day to her. a long day, but sort of the same day. and to yaz this is like so long ago. this is as long ago as her running away was in 11x1. what do you think would be going through her head. "if you tell, i'll tell"?

normally johnny's the kind of character i'd prefer to leave designless, but its difficult to do silly joke stuff with a character that doesn't look like anything lmao. my sort of compromise between the two is limiting his palette to the book colors

Bee, I know the general setting for ot4 is post-canon, but if we imagine a No Powers scenario where everyone is human and Ava is still disabled to some extent, how do Cam, Bea, and Lil take steps to be careful with Ava while also railing her into the next millennium? 👀

I love a no powers au because that just means the ot4 is like a regular polycule with like 3x more catholic repression than most.

Short answer is that I think it depends on what Ava's range of motion is, because you just know after they kiss for the first time Beatrice has binders full of research on mobility and safety aids for sex. She's repressed and catholic sure but she's also a PLANNER. Ava flips thru the sex binders ike they're the JC Penny catalog.

#all that to say I don't think I will speak more on the matter because I just haven't done my research yet #but yes they absolutley do rail her safely #safety first #insane sex second
