           Being 12 in the Dregs was the perfect time to learn.  Kaz was young enough that Per Haskell and the older members thought he was still green, too young to really know how to listen and learn, so they let him sit in on meetings, let him carry messages around town, and let him organize and clean offices alone.  He used all of this time to absorb all the information he could about everyone.  Who was paying who and how much, who wasn’t sleeping with their wife that night, or who had just bought a boy from a slaver, everything he could learn to use at a later time.  So when Haskell sent him to the Emerald Palace was a note for Pekka Rollins Kaz took it gladly, desperately wanting to learn some secrets.  However, when he read the message, his heart jumped to his throat.
I’ll have some Dregs waiting for Mellar and that girl by the Crow Club after 10 bells, they’ll rough her up good, give her a lesson for you.  Make sure Mellar knows and stays by the backdoor so she can’t get into the club.  You owe me. – Haskell
           He knew that the ‘her’ being referred to had to be Y/N.  She was the only person that Mellar was in charge of overseeing.  He wasn’t sure what lesson Rollins wanted to teach her this time or why but he knew he had to stop it.  He delivered the message as promised but instead of returning to the Slat he looked around, figuring the way that Mellar would probably take her to get to the club.  He waited on a street that wasn’t normally crowded, bordering the back of some taverns and the canal.  He stood, biding his time, his knife already in his hand.
           It was dark and the street in front of the Emerald Palace was filling up just as Mellar walked out, Y/N following behind him.  He glanced around, not a care in the world, he was Pekka Rollins’s enforcer, no one would touch him.  Y/N was the daughter of the most powerful slum lord in the Barrel, she was safe outside of her home.  At least, that’s what Mellar thought as he started down the side street near the canal, wanting to get this business over and done with.  Y/N had been lippy with him all day and he couldn’t wait to see her get what was coming to her, harden her up some.  He past in front of Kaz without noticing.  Y/N stopped.  She would find Kaz no matter where he was, she looked at him and he sent her a smirk before he jumped out of the shadows and onto Mellar’s back.  He put his arm around to the man’s front and started stabbing, not caring where he hit or if he got cut in the process.  Mellar let out a cry and fell to the ground, struggling to get away.
           “They heard him…one of the barkers is coming, give me the knife,” she said, snatching it away from him. Kaz looked at her as she started stabbing herself.  “Hide!” Kaz dove into an alcove between the taverns, holding his breath as a barker ran past him and to Y/N.
           “Just wait until your father…” he started.  She growled and held up the knife.
           “What in the hell are you doing stupid girl?” came Rollins’s voice.  Kaz could see him walking up to her.  He looked between Mellar’s dead body and her, shaking his head.  “Well, guess there’s a little bit of fight in you isn’t there?”  He reached out, grabbing her by the hair to drag her back to his club, but she slashed the knife out, cutting his arm pretty bad.  He growled and she instantly cowered back, knife falling to the cobbles. He had her hair still, so he bent down and picked up the knife.  Kaz almost revealed himself then, wanting to save her, but he knew he couldn’t.  They were outnumbered by 3 fully grown men, the odds were against them and he wasn’t foolish enough to try to play hero.
           “Maybe you should get a taste of what Mellar felt,” Rollins said, stabbing the knife into her shoulder, pushing it in up to the hilt before pulling it out again.  Y/N was panicking, her breath coming in short pants. “Here, a night in the canal should do you good.”  He pushed her back and Kaz watched with horror as she fell back into the water, starting to sink.  Rollins told the others to clean up Mellar’s mess before heading back.  While they were distracted Kaz slid out and dove into the water.  It took him a few seconds to find her floating just under the surface.  He didn’t want to do this, it was too much like Jordie, but he couldn’t let her die in there.  With all the will he could muster he slid one arm under her arms and swam towards the nearest set of stairs.  He pulled her up, taking his shirt off and tearing off his sleeve.  He wrapped it around her wound, tying it as tight as he could hoping that would be enough until he could get her somewhere a little safer.
           Once the barkers had finished with Mellar’s body Kaz picked Y/N up, trying to be gentle while also ignoring the bile in his throat.  He swallowed down the sick and climbed the stairs, keeping to alleys and side streets that were less crowded until he found the old burned out pleasure house near the Slat.  There was a door that only swung open enough for a child or maybe small adult could fit through.  Kaz set Y/N’s unconscious body against the wall and slid inside before pulling her in after him.  He carried her to an old bed on the wall and laid her down.  She was still breathing so he left to find something to use as a better bandage.  He found an old cotton dress, something worn by one of the girls probably, and tore off a piece.  He set about dressing her wound properly and once that was done and he knew he wouldn’t need to touch her again he vomited in a corner, his body shaking as he came to terms with what had happened.  He had been able to keep the images and feelings at bay while he helped her, his need to save her had overridden his sickness.  That was something to keep in mind for later, this could be overcome, but only when a stronger feeling came around.
           “Kaz?” he heard her whisper.  He moved over to the bed and sat down on it.  She was awake, face still lacking color due to blood loss.
           “You’re alive, we’re in that Dove’s Nest pleasure house that burnt down,” he said.  She nodded slowly, eyes starting to focus.
           “He stabbed me, threw me in the canal,” she said.
           “And yet somehow you don’t have gangrene,” Kaz said, trying to take her mind off of the betrayal she had suffered.  She laughed a little, but he knew his ploy hadn’t worked.  Her life was a betrayal, from her father’s abuse, to those around her laughing at his actions, to the saints and gods that did nothing to save her.  Kaz was the only person who hadn’t betrayed her, and he knew it was only a matter of time before he did.  He would have to if he wanted to destroy Rollins’s life, he just hoped she would understand.  “Where is your mother?  Why isn’t she helping you?”
           “My mother died having me,” she said.  “I think that’s when my father decided I was a demon incarnate, come to bring him shame and suffering.”  She tried to move her arm but just whimpered.  Kaz tried to help her sit up but she waved him away.  “Don’t force yourself, I don’t want to make you feel more uncomfortable than you already do.”  Was he that transparent to her?
           “Is that why he does this to you?” he asked, motioning to her shoulder.  She nodded.
           “He thinks it will harden me, make me more like him if I suffer enough I will want to make others suffer.  It just does the opposite, I never want anyone to feel like I do ever again,” she said. So noble, Kaz wished he could be more like that sometimes.  Imagine being able to take all the bad around you and try to make it good.  She was trying to rise out of the swamp she was born while Kaz was nesting deep in it, building a nice summer home for him to spend his days.
           “Get some rest,” he said softly, wanting this conversation to be over.  This was too draining for him.  She didn’t fight him, just laid her head down and closed her eyes. He could hear her breathing even out so he snuck out, finding food and water for when she woke up.  He set himself up next to the bed and leaned his head back on the drooping mattress, watching her sleep.  His eyes closed and he dreamed about killing Mellar again, only this time he finished the job, and in the dream she kissed him and he didn’t feel sick, he felt like flying.
           In the morning she woke up after him, seeing just a note left nearby telling her to eat and drink and then get home.  She smiled softly and ate the crackers he had left.  She looked around the room and smiled a little.  This could be a nice place to stay.  As she walked back to the Emerald Palace she started planning how she could make that old brothel a little home for her.  However, that dream ended the moment Rollins told her to come to his office.
           “Its time you start taking responsibility around here, I’ve coddled you too long,” he said.  “Seeing that killer instinct last night made me realize, you’re almost grown now, time for you to be a lieutenant in my gang, time for your first real job.”
           “And what job is that?” she asked.  He smiled.
           “You are going to rob the Black Tips safe house past West Stave, take your new guard with you, gather some lions and get it done by tomorrow night,” Rollins said, motioning for a young man a of couple years older than her to follow.  She glanced at him and he smiled at her, it was kind and she almost fell for it.  Her father knew she was starting to get feelings for someone, she was at that age that things like that happened, so he was pushing someone from his crew for her to fall for.  And since Kaz was unreachable, someone she couldn’t ever actually be with, maybe she would let it happen.  She would keep Kaz in her heart, locked away in that place only soulmates get to stay. Maybe someday she could take him out and let those feelings really grow, but not now, not until the Dime Lions were dead and Kaz was sitting on their ashes.

Monochrome. Your life was like the black and white pages in a manga; dull and neutral. There was nothing special about you, for the most part, you were ordinary.
At some point, almost every girl would like a colourful romance. One with blooming roses, scintillating sparkles and handsome young men. Topped off with promises of abiding love and vibrant days filled with never ending mirth.
However, you never pursued it, nor did it find you, and that was alright. Besides, what was the point of heart throbbing ardour if it were all to come to an inevitable end?
With a few clicks, your computer was turned off. You began clearing your desk, sorting out your folders and files when your colleague spun around in their chair.
“Hey, (l/n)-san. Did you hear?” The mousey woman enquired. A small smile was etched across her makeup coated face as she continued. “There’s going to be a dinner function! It’ll be held in the fancy hotel across the building.”
Your coworker across your table stood up to peer pass the desk divider. She chimed in with avidity, “I’m soooo going tonight! I heard the other divisions has a ton of hotties. No way in hell I’m gonna turn down a chance to meet ‘em!”
“Geez, you’re always thinking about men...” The lady beside you sighed, before returning her gaze back to you. “So, wanna go together?”
You shook your head, “Count me out. I already have plans tonight.” As you got up and shifted your handbag, you smiled apologetically. “Let me know if anything interesting happens, though.”
“Oh, okay... See you tomorrow,” she bid you farewell, albeit disappointedly. You nodded and bid the duo the same.
When your back was turned to them, the lady across the divider whispered to the one beside you. You knew what they were prattling about: that you were plain and boring. Wordlessly, you left the room, your heels clacking against the tiles as you made your way to the elevator.
As the double digits on the digital screen changed to singular ones, you closed your eyes.
Truthfully, it would be a lie to say that your life was completely monochrome. It was once colourful, after all, despite being for a short period.
Those days had involved a boy named Miya Atsumu, and he was the one who had brought colour into your high school days.
It all began in a manga shop.
You were in your second year of high school then, and would frequent a manga shop on the way home. It was sandwiched between a decently sized Lawson and an antique shop, on a quieter side of town.
The shop was abundant with not only manga, but also multifarious classics and second hand books. With its reserved location, not many knew of its existence, thus it went unnoticed by hordes of rambunctious manga fanatics.
It was perfect for you; your little safe place. However, you didn’t know that it was also frequented by a particular faux blonde.
You had wandered in with a specific title in mind, looking forward to getting your hands on it the whole day. Meanwhile, the boy’s brain was so preoccupied with volleyball and upcoming matches that he didn’t notice you, in an identical school uniform, lingering in the same section.
And like a sick cliche, your fingers bumped into his.
Withdrawing your hand, you snuck a side glance, only to see a broad chest in your line of sight. You slowly tilted your head to meet his steely gaze. Flinching, you practically whipped around when you realised the boy was towering over you.
“Um, sorry...” You mumbled out whilst backing away.
Atsumu’s brows were scrunched together as he took in your form. He half expected you to latch onto him with your eyes, but you were looking away, at anywhere but him.
Maybe once you got a good look at him, you’d react like all the oestrogen in his life. Squealing his name, asking for his number, all thirsty for his attention.
However, all you did was stand awkwardly, without uttering a single word. The oddity took him aback slightly. Thus, he decided to play with you a bit.
The teen perked his brows slightly before pointing at the manga’s spine. “Don’t cha want this?” He gestured, making you nod. A cruel smirk sneaked up to his handsome face.
You thought he was going to pass it to you. Instead, he slipped it out of the shelf and sauntered away. He slapped a few notes onto the cashier’s counter, making the store owner jump at his boldness. The boy with the undercut swiftly shuffled towards the entrance, his book bag slung over his back with the manga dangling from his long fingers.
Gawking, you watched as the automatic sliding doors opened for him. You wanted to call him back, to demand him to return it to you. But you knew it was impossible. The manga wasn’t yours, after all.
The blonde cocked his back to catch a glimpse of you. Noticing your conflicted expression, a mischievous grin spread across his face. He stuck out his tongue at you, cackling as your eyes widened and your face flushed. Then he left as soon as he came.
Your entire body trembled with embarrassment and humiliation. What just happened...!?
To make your day worst, you later learnt that the manga was the last one in stock. The rest of your day was spent stabbing your food and antagonising your pillow.
The next day, you found him again in the manga shop, but with grey hair. You almost dropped your book bag as you stomped towards him, fuming and ready to pounce on him.
The ash grey haired teen glanced at you with a deadpanned expression as you stopped beside him, shaking with infuriation.
“How could you do that to me yesterday!? You took the last one! The! Last! One!” Your nostrils flared as you exhaled. “Now I have no wait an entire week– And why’s your hair grey now–!?”
Despite your confrontation, the boy remained unfazed as he cocked a dark brow. It took him a few seconds to realise. He glanced up at the ceiling then back at you.
“Sorry, I think you’re mistaken,” he began politely, maintaining a neutral expression. “But the person you’re talking about is probably my obnoxious twin.”
This encounter had ended with a deep bow and a deluge of apologies. Nodding, the more reserved twin gave you a cold ‘ok’ before ambling away.
Since then, you realised that there were two twins in your school: the Miya brothers. The asshole was Atsumu, and the quieter one was Osamu. Or at least, they had seemed that way to you, on account of your personal experiences.
You wondered how you had never noticed them until now, especially when they stood out during assemblies due to their dyed hair. Not to mention their questionable popularity with the girls.
Maybe Osamu was reasonable, but who in the right mind would fall for someone like that blonde jackass Atsumu!?
On one occasion, you were shuffling past the gymnasium for a nurse’s errand when you saw a glimpse of the volleyball club. Bright blonde hair swished past the doors, and you remembered your meeting with the haughty male.
“Nice kill!” A deep voice hollered, followed by the high pitched squeaks of shoes against polished floor. You peeked past the doors, eyes shining with curiosity, when the twins you had met suddenly jumped into the air.
Your eyes were set on Atsumu as he deftly set a volleyball for his brother, who spiked the ball without delay. Sweat glimmered down the faux blonde’s forehead, tracing his jawline before dripping onto the floor. The slap he gave Osamu’s hand reverberated in the gym as they shared matching grins.
Seeing them together really highlighted the fact that they were carbon copies of each other. Your train of thoughts were derailed when a member with dark hair and narrowed eyes pointed in your direction.
Atsumu glanced at you, his smile turned upside down whilst you jolted up. With confident strides, he was in your face in an instant. He gave you a once over before grimacing.
“Get lost.”
Then he slammed the door shut in your face. As you stood frozen in place, unable to register what had happened, Osamu pressed his lips together in a thin line.
“‘Tsumu, that’s no way to treat a lady.”
His golden haired twin simply snorted in response.
Your next encounter with Atsumu took place at the manga shop again. A fight had broken out between the two of you, both unwilling to relent. Gripping the limited edition copy tightly in your hand, you refused to budge.
There were extras, but you had arrived first before the haughty boy and both of you had touched the same copy. Consequently, warring with each other.
Both of you shared exasperated expressions, tugging and pulling desperately for the manga. Neither wanted to throw in the towel. Atsumu was much stronger than you, clearly, his biceps flexing as he clenched his teeth and tried to pry the book from you.
Meanwhile, your two feet were planted firmly in the ground, all your strength poured into rooting yourself into the tiles or risk falling backwards if he were to let go.
However, he would not in a long time.
“Let go, you brat!” He chided, grunting with exasperation. Tugging it back harshly, you almost stumbled.
Growling animalistically, you retorted, “Never!” Then you lunged forward to bite his hand.
The blonde released the manga with a yelp, shoving your face off his hand brutishly. You stumbled back in response, tripping and landing on your bum. A string of saliva dribbled down your lips as you stared up at him, grinning victoriously.
Atsumu glowered, holding his bitten fist with his other hand. A row of teeth had punctured his skin, and you realised there was a little blood. “What the hell is wrong with you!?”
As you stood up and brushed your school skirt, you adjusted your book bag and gripped the manga to your chest. Trembling with anger, you were giddy with pride and sheepishness.
“You slammed a door in my face, asshole!”
Then you rushed past him to pay for your purchase. Atsumu turned to watch you leave, your loafers tapping against the floor softly as you ran off. But when you hopped out of the outlet, you gave him a side glance and stuck out your tongue.
Atsumu recognised the gesture; he pointed a middle finger in return.
Days and weeks went by like that, with Atsumu and you contending against each other to buy the weekly Jump, the first copies of mangas or limited edition prints. It was childish, for two seventeen year olds to tousle with each other.
Atsumu would ruthlessly tug on your hair, screaming bloody murder of your existence and stubbornness. Meanwhile, you resorted to calling him all sorts of colourful words, which would result in the shop owner throwing the two of you out. There was even a time when you both were banned from stepping in until you made up.
It happened eventually, and the two of you would at least communicate with less insults and more civilly. Your peace treaty with him didn’t mean letting him snag first copies of new arrivals, though. But Atsumu and you settled it through more human means, instead of ripping out each other’s hair.
There was one moment in which Atsumu had made your heart beat a little faster, too. It had happened like this: you were found beside the school’s vending machine, crying because you had dropped your shoujo manga in a muddy puddle. It would never have happened if it weren’t for a group of girls that bumped into you on purpose.
Your emotional breakdown ended when Atsumu found you in that pitiful state, squatting by a murky ditch with a floating black and white book. He had stumbled upon you by coincidence, as he was buying a Pocari Sweat.
He recognised your (h/c) locks and your figure even from afar, and when he realised you were crying, he was stumped. Sure, you would cry when he tugged at your hair during fights, but for him to see your tear stained face outside arguments felt weird.
Atsumu remained silent, standing near you as you sniffled. You knew he was standing behind you, you could tell him from the hairdo in the shadow looming over you.
Instead of asking what had happened, his eyes scanned the scene and realised that a limited edition manga was floating in the dark brown puddle. Probably yours, he had thought. He connected the dots instantly. Atsumu may be childish at times, but he wasn’t an imbecile.
The blonde setter knew how much you loved your manga, how brightly you would beam whenever you got your hands on them. For you to ruin it must have felt like a heartbreak, or worse.
“Was that the one we bought two days ago?” He mumbled, and you nodded meekly.
With a soft sigh, he approached the vending machine. After slotting his coins in and pressing a button, a drink dropped to the bottom. He bent down to scoop it out, mumbling as he did so.
“You can borrow mine, if ya want.”
At that moment, your mind went blank. This immature boy was going to lend you his? It wouldn’t be such a big deal if this was anyone else, but this was Miya Atsumu you were talking about.
An insolent big shot who refused to let you win. Someone whose mental age degraded when he fumbled with words to support why he deserved to get the first copy. A selfish guy who never wanted to share.
You glanced up at the teen silently, tears still streaming down your face. He flinched as you croaked, “Miya-kun... Are you sick or something?”
“...Never mind. I think I’ll retract my offer!” He huffed, spinning on his heels as he shuffled away.
Scrambling to your feet, you blurted out, “W-Wait! I was joking, I swear!”
You chased after him, and although he couldn’t hear it, you wished Atsumu wouldn’t be able to hear your heart pounding in your chest.
Inevitably, the blonde twin and you grew closer. Sometimes, you would walk with him to school, though it was more like you were third wheeling with him and his brother. The two of them would converse about volleyball, homework, and even little things like bentos and nonsensical topics.
You grew used to their frivolous antics, and Osamu eventually opened up to you as well. The two of them even let you call them by their first names, especially since referring to both of them as ‘Miya’ was confusing.
Atsumu only learnt of your name when you both exchanged it, and when you told him he could call you by your first name, he chaffed you for the overfamiliarity.
There were days when the blonde and you would visit the manga store together. And in time to come, the teenager grew fond of your ebullient nature towards comics. He would poke fun of you for reading ‘unfeminine’ genres, such as horror and sci-fi. Whenever he found you peeking at boy love books, you never heard the end of it.
At the same time, you began to appreciate him, despite his snide remarks and snarky attitude. There were times when his jokes crossed the line you, making you pout and sometimes cry, but he would apologise through his actions, like gifting you the new arrival of your favourite manga.
It was almost impossible to get him to apologise, due to his pride, but he always made up with you in his own way. And for that, you were grateful.
As months passed and you both became close friends, Atsumu began hanging out with you during school hours. On one occasion, the both of you hid in the rooftop to eat lunch. Osamu wasn’t present due to a cold, so it was just the two of you.
Picking up an octopus shaped wiener, you gave it a half hearted glance before popping it into your mouth. Atsumu was rambling about morning practice, blathering on how pissed he was that his brother wasn’t around to spike his perfect sets.
Suddenly, without thinking, you interrupted. “You know, you’re not a bad guy, Atsumu.”
Your eyes were fixated on his when you blurted out. His cheeks were stuffed with rice as he turned to you, surprised. With a perked brow, he gawked at you like you had grown a second head.
“Wait, are you falling for me already, (y/n)?” His deep, buttery voice was muffled by the contents in his mouth.
You grinned and waggled your brows. “No way, your personality is like sewage water.”
With a giggle, you leaned in to take away the small grain lingering by his lips. Your soft knuckles brushed against the corners of his lips and he swore he had stopped breathing.
Atsumu’s cheeks were dusted pink at your kind yet intimate gesture. Nobody had done that to him before, and he was unsure of what to feel.
Taking notice of his sudden silence, you raised your brows. “Atsumu, are you okay?”
“Haaaah–?! What are you talking about, I’m perfectly fine!” He scrunched his brows together, wrinkling his nose in disgust. Then he turned away, his back facing you as he scarfed down the remains of his lunch.
You tilted your head, unsure of what had happened, but resumed eating too. Truthfully, he was a little abashed. Ever since then, his heart would beat a little faster for you too.
Atsumu’s presence in your previously dull life meant new found colours. Days went by in a blur, with jokes, nonsense and memorable memories. He had snuck into your life when you least expected it, and so did you in his.
You began watching the volleyball team‘s matches. Sitting in the back row, you would cheer for Atsumu in your own special way: inwardly.
You didn’t understand much about the game, but you knew that your blonde friend loved it more than anything else, even his manga. So it must have meant something strongly to him, and as a friend, you had to support him.
The game was moving quickly, a bit too quickly for your taste. You didn’t comprehend what was happening, but at least Inarizaki was winning. The intimidating black screen beside the court flashed with a new digit, eliciting an eruption of cheers from the cheer squad.
“Isn’t he cute? He’s kinda dreamy,” a girl in front of you sighed to her friend, and you perked up instantly. Unconsciously, you began eavesdropping. “I wonder if Atsumu-kun has a girlfriend...”
“Are you kidding? Men that hot are either gay or taken!” Her peer bubbled with conceited giggles.
You wrinkled your nose at the insensitive response, but you mulled over her words. You had never seen Atsumu with a girl before. However, there were instances when you stumbled upon him during a confession. You would hide in a bush or behind a wall, listening curiously as the girl rambled on about how much she loved or admired him.
Without fail, his words would be laced with distaste while turning them down. Usually with harsh responses like ‘you don’t even know me’ or ‘I betcha say that to every guy’. He would even go as far as ripping a love letter to shreds.
They were total knock outs to the girls’ feelings. And as they ran away in tears, you couldn’t help but feel devastated for them. Atsumu sure was a prick at times.
“Him? Having a girlfriend? Never in a million years,” you mumbled under your breath.
Strangely, your chest had tightened a little with the thought.
The game finished shortly and the volleyball team gathered together to thank the watching spectators. Atsumu’s eyes bore holes into the black banner hung over the wall when suddenly, he glanced in your direction.
You flinched under his discerning gaze, stiffening nervously. He didn’t know that you were here until now.
His eyes narrowed a bit before a smirk settled on his sweat stained face. Your face burned, a little too hotly for your liking, and you looked down at your shoes to hide it. Why was he staring at you like that?
The girls in front of your row squealed that he was looking in their direction, but when they called out to him, he looked away. His cold attitude almost made you snigger.
Now that the match was over, you decided it was time to head home. You were ready to descend a flight of stairs when a familiar voice called your name. Spinning around, you came face to face with the handsome blonde, who was wearing a shit-eating grin.
“Didn’t know you came,” he breathed, arms akimbo as you cocked your head.
“Yeah, I wanted to cheer for Osamu.” You gave him a cheeky, lidded eye smile. An irk mark formed on his temple as he chopped your head with his hand.
The two of you went off after that: you teasing him on his missed serve and how his brother had to pick up his slack. Atsumu bared his fangs and fired empty threats and curses, all the while you pulled your bottom eyelid and blew a raspberry mockingly.
A dark haired teen in a jersey with the number ten stood idly by his teammates. Leaning on a railing, he hummed. “Who’s that, Osamu?”
The mentioned twin watched his brother and you with a softened expression. As the two of you fought like cats and dogs, he chuckled. “Someone who can stand Atsumu more than me.”
“Huh... If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they’re in love.”
The Inarizaki volleyball club watched as Atsumu pinched your cheeks and spread them ruthlessly, earning a high pitched whine from you. You resorted to clawing his face and Osamu had to put an end to both of your antics–
The voice on the intercom derailed your train of thought. Getting up, you stumbled out of the train in a daze.
You had unwittingly gone down memory lane, a bit too much. As your heels tapped against the concrete sidewalk, you glanced up at the dark sky twinkling with a streak of stars. Clouds rolled by leisurely, and waning luna peeked from her wispy blanket.
The rest of your high school had gone by in a blur, most of it involving Miya Atsumu. There was one time when you went to an anime and manga convention with him.
You smiled fondly at the distant memory: Atsumu was teary eyed as he shook hands with his favourite mangaka, who was a hunched over man. Out of respect for him, he knelt down, to be the same height, and took a photo with him in that state. You had never imagined a day would come when he would kowtow to someone.
Taking out your phone, you searched up for his social media and tapped on his Twitter account. There were posts after posts of his activity in the MSBY Black Jackals.
A silly selfie with a dog filter made you titter aloud. The comment section was overwhelmed with questions of his next match, his day, relationship status and the like.
Atsumu was an even bigger shot now. He also moved nearer to his volleyball team’s hometown, just to be able to practice longer hours there. He had left his hometown a while ago, and the both of you hadn’t contacted each other for years.
You once had his phone number, until a sneaky crow took off with your old mobile phone. No clue as to why that had happened.
Sighing at the thought, you stepped foot into your destination: a manga shop. The same one you had first met him. It never really changed; faded beige walls and oak wood shelves with blanched posters. Walking back in here only reminded you of how colourful your life had once been.
“Welcome back, (l/n)-san!” greeted the young boy behind the counter. He was the grandson of the shop owner, whose knees had deteriorated over the years.
You glanced in his direction. “How’s business been, kid?” He gave you an ‘ok’ sign and your expression softened. “Hope it’s okay if I take a bit. I finally found some time to shop.”
“Store’s closing in ten. Don’t take too long!” He waved back earnestly and you nodded.
Making your way past the familiar shelves, the clacking of your heels resounded in the almost empty store. Your hair bounced behind you as you tread past the sports manga section, past a tall, blonde.
You had failed to notice the old friend behind the mask. The blonde man glanced up the moment you passed, and his eyes widened in shock.
Without hesitation, you picked up the latest issue of Jump. It had been a while since you read manga, as everyday was swamped with work. Flipping through the black and white pages, your mind drifted to the reality in the panels.
You were oblivious to the male strutting towards you. As he approached, he took in your more adultly figure and attire. You were dressed in a white button up which clung to your chest, and a black pencil skirt that hugged your waist and hips.
You looked ravishing, to say the least, and Atsumu had to swallow the lump in his throat. There was no mistake, the beautiful woman in front of him was you.
He stopped behind you, hands jammed into his jean pockets before pulling down the white mask. The man with a dark cap atop his fluffy blonde locks peered past your smaller form to take in the manga in your hands. With a soft hum, he spoke up.
“Something’s never change, huh?”
You jolted up in surprise and whipped around, only to come face to face with an intimidatingly tall man. He was almost 190cm, perhaps, and was built with muscles that even his clothes couldn’t hide. His broad chest was in your face, and you had to tilt your head back to meet him in the eye.
With a lopsided grin, the man took off his cap. His tousled blonde locks sprang out of their cage, and your eyes widened in recognition while he smirked, “Sup, (y/n). How are ya?”
“Atsumu?!” You gasped, the Jump going slack in your hands as you dropped it. It flopped onto a pile of similar copies whilst said blonde placed a finger over his lips.
“Shh, I’m here on my day off!” He teasingly hushed, and you instantly clamped a hand over your mouth to silence your confused screaming.
Was this for real? How could the boy, who had painted your monochrome life full of colour, be standing right in front of you? Right now and right here?
Your eyes flitted from the pooling chocolate brown in his eyes to his larger stature. Raking his figure with your wide eyes, you came to a conclusion: Atsumu had changed.
You knew that he was more built from his self-centred topless selfies, but seeing him upclose was a whole different experience. He has grown taller too, though he had always loomed over you either way, but it was still a little frightening how much he could grow even after puberty. Meanwhile, his undercut was relatively the same, except his bangs were not pushed back, unlike before when they were swept to the right.
The only thing that had remained unchanged was the playful glint in his orbs and the smug smile tugging on his lips.
“I...Is it really you, ‘Tsumu?” You murmured, albeit teary eyes as you removed your hand from your mouth.
Running his fingers through his golden mane, he chuckled, “Do ya know anyone with these good looks?”
Your eyes narrowed playfully and you pinched his cheeks. Huffing, you told him off, “Stop trying to be so suave, weirdo!”
“Geh– But seriously, I thought you died or something! Ya never responded to my texts,” He spluttered out as you pulled his cheeks harder, and he managed to add, “But lucky me, you’re still kickin’!”
“Wait, you what?” Your lashes fluttered in confusion. You hadn’t gotten a word he had said since the beginning.
“I tried contacting you once in a while, but you never replied.” He blinked, and you looked down at the ground, suddenly embarrassed.
“Ah... My phone was stolen by a crow. And I lost your number...”
“Wait, for real? That sounds like something straight outta a manga!” He chortled as a sheepish smile snuck on your flushed face.
When Atsumu had calmed down, he placed his hands over yours, detaching them from his cheeks. Holding your hands gently, he wore a mask of calm. You were a bit confused by his sudden, gentle gesture. You gave him a questioning look, although your heart was starting to pound uncontrollably behind your ribs.
Squeezing your hand lightly, he began quietly. “(y/n), I know it’s been a long time and all... But I never forgot the times we had together. And, well, I know it’s kinda late, but I liked you.”
A blush crept up on both of your faces as he continued clumsily. “I kinda still do, so, well... If you’d like, we should–“
“Shop’s closing!” Atsumu and you jumped up in surprise. The boy was standing at the end of the section, a look of genuine surprise on his baby face. Glowering, the blonde barked fiercely.
“You ruined it, ya moron!”
The teen flinched before scuttling away. You burst into giggles as the upset athlete scowled. Whipping his head back to you, he scrunched his brows together, exasperated.
“What’s so funny?” He enquired, still wearing a frown.
Breathing shakily, you wiped away a tear in your eye. “You never really changed, Atsumu!” With a lidded eye smile, you grinned at him innocently, heart swelling with nostalgia.
His glare softened at your expression. Shooting a quick glance at the returned boy, who was peeking from the shelves anxiously, he clicked his tongue.
“Let’s ditch this place,” he grunted, taking your hand in his again as he dragged you out of the shop. You stumbled but eventually matched his pace.
With an apologetic glance at the young boy standing in the shop, you turned back to Atsumu. “Still as mean and pushy as always, aren’t cha?”
The faux blonde gave you a side glance, still pulling you along. Eye rolling, he slapped back on his cap and looked ahead, “Shut up.”
Neither Atsumu nor you couldn’t deny that both of your hearts were pounding. The two of you ended up taking a long stroll in your hometown, catching up on the pass few years and more. The night also had ended on a high note.
Once again, Miya Atsumu’s vibrant colours had seeped back into the monochrome panels of your life. Perhaps, this time, a romance would bloom between the two of you.

[TommyInnit is Live]
You clicked on the notification from Twitch so fast you thought you broke your mouse. It was 4 pm in your hometown of Elkhart (1), Wisconsin. School had ended a few weeks before for the kids, including for you; your Junior year. You were to be a Senior next year, your last year of high school. Most everyone was outside enjoying the weather of mid-June, the warm sun lighting the fields where kids played and adults watched or played along. It seemed like everyone was outside enjoying the sun. Except you.
You were in your room, watching a live video from one of your comfort streamers; TommyInnit. The 17-year-old British blonde from the UK. Like most, you never had any bad days when you watched his streams. Whenever you did have a bad day, it seemed like one of your comfort streamers knew and hit that "Go live" button.
Tommy was playing Minecraft with a couple of his friends - a couple of your comfort streamers - WilburSoot and Tubbo. They had just started a new survival world, to see who could speed run the quickest.
The chat on the side of the screen exploded with their answers. A lot said Tommy, others said Tubbo, and a fair amount said, Wilbur. You thought they were all very good at the game but considered it was down to either Wilbur or Tommy. Wilbur was the calmest about it, being quick but also taking his time. Tommy was a ball of chaotic fury; trying to be quick but stressing about beating the game.
"Wha- How the fok does Will already have diamonds?" Tommy screamed, trying to get his character to mine the iron in front of him. You smiled at the screen as he joined Wilbur's voice channel to yell at him.
"Well, Tommy. You just- you just gotta get good at the game." Wilbur's voice said through Discord.
Tommy leaned back, his mic quieting the sound of him groaning in annoyance, "Ughh, fok off, you little- you know what?". He left Wilbur's voice channel and went to Tubbo's.
"Tommy?" Tubbo's small voice echoed through the channel.
"I say we team up against Will." Tommy started, making his character jump out of the cave and mine more spruce wood from the mountain he was on, "Look- he's already got diamonds m'kay, let's work together."
It took a second to hear Tubbo's reply. "...okay?"
"Great. Do you have any iron?"
As they all continued to play, you left to use the bathroom and grab snacks. On your way down the stairs, you rubbed the warm back of your black and white kitten (2) that was sitting on the windowsill. Once out of the bathroom, you check the kitchen cupboards for any snacks.
You found a bag full of fruit candies, caramel suckers, and some off-brand chocolate bars. They were technically your fathers, but he wouldn't notice if some were gone. You grabbed a handful of each and a can of Coca-Cola that was in the fridge. You then ran back, your kitten following up the stairs.
Once you were seated, you continued to watch the stream with your kitten purring in your lap. Wilbur, Tommy, and Tubbo were all trying to fight blazes in the Nether. Tommy already had 4 blaze rods, while Tubbo had 1.
"Tubbo, kill that blaze-" he then screamed in fright as his character caught on fire, "Foook! There's one behind. Dammit Tubbo." he then laughed as Tubbo also screamed in fright.
You laughed as you turned to your second monitor and loaded up Minecraft. Your computer loaded it up fairly quickly, given that you were also watching the stream that took a ton of internet to watch. Given that, you decide to play CakeWars. As you joined the round, you looked at the stream as all three made it to the end.
They all teamed up and were trying to fight the endermen and the ender dragon. Your attention was on your own game that you didn’t realize they had killed the ender dragon and were now declaring victory. Tommy took all the credit as Wilbur laughed. Tubbo giggled and then hit Tommy’s in-game character with his own.
With that, they decided to play servers. More specifically, the same server you were going to play CakeWars in next. You failed to notice when your screen flashed with the red lettering, “Your cake has been eaten.”
"Dammit!"
Your teammates tried their hardest to stay alive, but unfortunately, the Yellow team was stronger with their armor and weapons. As you tried to run away, one threw an ender pearl and teleported in front of you.
Using your iron sword, you tried to defend yourself, but their diamond enchanted sword dealt more damage to your leather and iron armor; you died after a couple of hits. You groaned in frustration as you quickly hit "new game". Your kitten got up and sat by your monitor, staring at the loading screen before you pushed him toward his bed.
"Hopefully my teammates are better next round."
You joined a new game, too focused on that to see that you were on the same server as Tommy, Wilbur, and Tubbo. The game started saying that you were part of the blue team. You looked over at your teammates and read their names. It took you a second until you recognized Tommy's skin and the name "TommyInnit" over his head. "Oh, my god." You looked at your other monitor and saw that Tommy was looking at your character (3).
"Hello, [Your Username]." His character punched toward you and crouched a couple of times.
"Hi!" Tubbo's character punched toward you too.
You crouched back, punching at all three. Wilbur nodded up and down, crouching all the same. You typed into the in-game chat and typed only to your team. "I'm honestly kinda freaking out right now, ngl."
Tommy read it out loud before laughing, "Oh, there's nothing to be afraid of. I see you're a woman- you all know how much I love women."
You heard Wilbur sigh and Tubbo laughed from the stream as you replied with, "Yes, Tommy, we know how much you love women XD."
He read it out loud and laughed, "I like this one. Hey, [Your Username], do you have a discord?"
Your hands began to shake and get clammy as you read it over a couple of times. As you collected your bricks to upgrade, you typed, "We win and I'll give it to you."
Tommy ran over to the villager selling things for bricks as he read it, "Okay, guys, we need to win. If we do, I'll talk to a girl!"
That made you laugh, as you covered your cake with endstone and blue wool. The chat on the side of the screen exploded with "Women POG", "TommyInnit talks to a woman???", and - your personal favorite - "Tommy simps over a probably 6-year-old". You laugh out loud as a dono pops up, talking in a robotic voice.
"Tommy, that could possibly be a young girl. Maybe you shouldn't hit on her?"
Tommy stumbled over his words as Wilbur and Tubbo laughed and agreed. To save him, you type, "Don't worry chat, I'm 17, thanks for looking out for me though X'D".
As the game progressed, your team had two emerald points, endstone, obsidian, and blue wool covering your cake, and all members decked in diamond armor and a diamond sword. The other three teams were fighting each other as your team collected and planned your attack. Tommy and Wilbur were going to attack the middle point while you and Tubbo guarded your cake.
They set off as you and Tubbo collected the bricks and emeralds beside your cake. The two of you just crouched and punched at one another until they came back. Tubbo continued to laugh on stream and Tommy questioned what was going on.
"Me and [Your Username] are just crouching at one another," Tubbo responded, laughing as you jumped and punched at him.
As you leaned back and closed your eyes laughing, you heard footsteps in your headset and quickly grabbed your mouse. A red member in full leather and an iron sword was running toward your cake. You appeared in front of him as Tubbo finally realized and screamed quietly. In a couple of hits, he died, barely taking away three of your hearts.
"Tubbo? Tubbo, what happened?" Tommy asked, panic in his voice.
"There was a red team member attacking our cake. But [Your Username] attacked 'em." Tubbo explained as they got back to their island.
Wilbur came up and jumped in your face, punching at you, "Good job, [Your Username]"
"Thanks." You typed, then another message, "I have a feeling we're gonna win this, but I don't wanna jinx."
You heard Wilbur laugh, "Don't worry. Let's just let the other teams fight and then join later."
"Yeah, we can sweep up what's left of them!" Tubbo agreed.
You nodded in-game, collecting the nether stars below you. As soon as you reached 10, you upgraded your resources. You also wanted to get protection but then the green team had taken the middle point.
"Here you go [Your Username]" You heard Tubbo say through the stream. You crouch in response as a cluster of nether stars were thrown at you.
Soon after, Wilbur and Tommy did as well. "Let's be honest, [Your Username] is more responsible - other than me, of course," Tommy said.
"Then why don't you take them?" You typed into game chat, challenging the blonde.
The other two laughed as Tommy stood in front of you crouching, "Okay, fine. Given 'em back bitch."
"Because you called me a b****, I'mma keep them." You said, walking over to your ender chest and putting them inside. You looked at Tommy and crouched once before covering your cake with more wool.
"Way to go, Tommy, you made her mad," Wilbur said, crouching, having his back to you.
You laughed once more, falling back into your seat before typing, "I'm not mad, just playing." You retrieved all 12 of the nether stars and upgraded your protection twice.
As you turned around, you saw a green member - decked in diamond armor - bridging toward your island. You race to the edge and crouch, punching in their direction. They looked up and punched at you, as three more green members also in diamond armor appeared behind him.
Tubbo alerted the other two and they all crouched at the edge, sword in hand. You clicked on your bow and shot an arrow at the first player. The ringing of a hit echoed through your headset as one got hit back.
The one you hit looked back up before his teammates switched to ender pearls. You back up, guarding your cake as you watch the green eye fly through the air.
You ignored the screams of the others on stream as you focused on one green member. They turned as you hit them a couple of times in the back. As they took off around your island, you ate a golden apple and chased after them, cutting them off and landing another blow.
They turned and tried to hit you, but didn't realize how close they were to the edge and fell. You turned your head to see your teammates fighting off the rest of them. Tubbo was losing a fight by a player who was continuously eating apples. You ran over to him and hit him. Distracted, he tried to fight you but Tubbo's blade had killed him.
"Thanks [Your Username]!" You heard Tubbo say as Tommy stopped screaming. The rest of green had fled or died. Wilbur had said nothing during that all while Tommy's mouth never seemed to shut. But you've been watching Tommy for so long, it didn't bother you; if anything, it made you laugh as you fought.
Wilbur's voice echoed through the stream, "Everyone good?"
Tubbo and Tommy said "Yes", while you nodded in-game. Your cake was never harmed, so you didn't need to rebuild. All your teammates were fine, other than Tubbo was missing more than half of his hearts.
You all collected emeralds that were still popping out from the ground. Everyone was stocking up on ender pearls and golden apples, roughly a stack of blue wool and arrows. As you closed out of the menu, you heard the sound of breaking blocks as the game said, "Everyone's cake has been eaten."
Tommy gathered you all around and said some "inspiring" words, "It's just 3 Red, 2 Green, 2 Yellow, and us left. We are the largest, therefore, we should be able to win this. Besides, we are probably the best PVP-ers in the whole match."
"Don't get too cocky, Tommy." You typed to them, crouching and uncrouching once.
Tommy laughed and then shrugged on camera, "Well, he's always cocky." Wilbur’s response came through.
"Hey, you fooking- never mind. Let's attack yellow, they're closest." Tommy said, before turning back to you and Tubbo.
You nod as he led the three of you down the one-block road and to the middle point. One yellow member in iron armor was trying to capture the point from red but panicked when they saw you coming. You ender pearled in front of them and started your attack. They got distracted with you that they couldn't fight off Wilbur from behind.
"Let's goooo!" Wilbur yelled, running down the three-block path to Yellow's island. The last person panicked when they saw the charging diamond armor and tried to ender pearl away. But the ender pearl hit the side of an island and they fell to their death.
"Now I feel bad." You quickly typed into game chat.
"Nah, there's nothing to feel bad about, it happens," Tommy responded to your message. "Now, let's attack Green."
The four of you charged forward as Red and Green were fighting. Tubbo yelled out and you all stopped. "Let's wait to see how this plays out." He said as you agreed.
For the next few minutes, you watched as the red team shot at Green as they tried to bridge across. You kept looking around, always cautious if another player tried to scare you.
A green player got knocked off their bridge and the other was attacked by a red who threw an ender pearl. "Okay, [Your Username], shoot at them to get their attention. You guys ready?"
Once everyone said they were, you looked down and started building up while crouching. As soon as you got about 8 blocks high, you selected your bow and aimed at the nearest red. You heard the ringing of the bell as the arrow hit them. They all turned to look at you as you started to dig down. An arrow whizzed past your ear as another hit you, making your character fall 6 blocks.
Your teammates all stood in front of you as the red team came charging. Eating one of your many golden apples, you started to regain health.
Wilbur fought one Red member with an enchanted diamond sword and enchanted diamond armor. Tommy attacked one member in full enchanted diamond armor and sword, who was building up, which reminded you of Fortnite building. Tubbo and you attacked the last one you was full enchanted diamond armor and sword. Your team had protection 2, but no sharpness on your swords.
All the sounds around you were swords swinging, characters jumping back from being hit, and Tommy's screaming coming from the stream. You hit the Red member repeatedly, while Tubbo stood back to heal.
You were down to about 6 hearts, your armor protecting most of your body. Trying to get away quickly, you started to build up; you were dangerously close to the edge. Making sure your character was okay, you started to shoot arrows from above.
However, you didn't see the Red member who was fighting Tommy ender pearl up and shoot an arrow at you. "[Your Username]! Look out!" Tommy yelled as you were hit.
Your character fell off the pillar and down toward the abyss. Having only a second to react, you quickly hit your ender pearls and threw one at the pillar. It connected and you teleported. You quickly placed a block underneath you, surviving with 3 hearts.
"Ohhh! Oh my god!" You screamed as you ate two golden apples. "Holy shit!"
As you hit 8 hearts, you joined the battle. Tommy was on 2 hearts and was being chased. You ender pearled behind him and attacked the Red member. Tommy must have had gotten him low because you hit him with two swings and he was dead. Tommy stopped running and saw you. "You're alive??" He seemed shocked.
You crouched a couple of times, nodding. "You gotta tell me how later."
You nod once and turn to help your friends. As you returned with Tommy behind you, you saw that Wilbur was fighting one off and the other had just knocked Tubbo off the edge. You heard him scream as he fell.
The red member saw you and quickly ate a golden apple as you charged him. You managed to hit him a couple of times in a row and his character got punched off the edge. At the same time, Wilbur had just killed the last Red member.
You heard the "Let's goooo!" from the stream and jumped up and down.
You quickly pulled up discord and got your information before pulling up Instagram on your phone. You found Tommy and opened a chat, sending him your discord. All you had to do was wait for him to open it.
You also added next to the link, "Wait till after stream."
As a new game was 20 seconds from starting, you realized that Tommy was talking to you. He wanted you to join another game with them. Of course, you agreed and you all selected the green team.
A couple of hours went past and it was getting later and later. The sky outside darkened and you heard your parents coming home from work. You were an only child, so no siblings were trashing the house with their stuff.
Your kitten kept sitting in front of your screen, watching the particles in-game. You accidentally let the yellow team eat your cake and then died trying to defend it. Wilbur has just died as Tommy and Tubbo ran for their lives.
But unfortunately, they had to succumb to defeat and Tommy had to end the stream. As he said his goodbyes to chat, you closed out of the stream and stared at your phone. You waited for it to go off, but it didn't. Not until then minutes after.
When it eventually did, you were on your PC playing Overwatch. The match had just ended, so you checked. It was a discord text from TommyInnit.
You calmed your inner panic before opening your phone. You accepted his buddy request with no hesitation. Another message went off and it had one single word. "Call?"
At that very moment, you heard your mother shout out to you. You turned back to your phone before responding with, "Yeah, sure, just give me a minute."
Your mother wanted you to eat dinner; which was macaroni and cheese with chicken nuggets (4). You took a plate to your room and set it down on your desk, watching your cat. He seemed to ignore you but you knew he was waiting for a moment when you're not looking.
You opened your phone and typed in your chat that you were back. Almost a second after you sent it, you were getting a call from Tommy. You accepted the call and said, "Hello?"
"Okay, well, hi- sorry, I really want to ask. How the fuck did you pull off that bow and arrow kill earlier?" You heard his voice on the other end. He seemed nervous but also knew exactly what he wanted to say.
You laughed, "Well, I've always been good at archery. On video games, of course, not so much in real life."
"Hm, archery. That should be my next vlog- but anyway! How did you survive that first round? I saw you fall. Was it lag?"
"Nope, I had ender pearls. I just used one quickly. To be honest, I was as surprised as you were. I was not expecting it to work." You responded as you picked up your cat who was trying to sneak over to your food.
As the two of you talked, a smile never left your face. You two laughed like you were old friends greeting each other for the first time in years. You kept battling your kitten, which entertained Tommy. You talked until it was 9 pm in America. You previously found out from school that it was a 5-hour difference between the US and Great Britain.
"Wait, wait, wait, Tommy? Isn't it like 2 in the morning for you right now?" You asked after he hummed.
"Uhh, no- wait, yeah, yep, yep, it is. That explains why I'm so tired-" he started laughing which in turn, made you laugh.
"Ugghh, I should probably go to bed." He yawned midway through his sentence.
You nodded, although he couldn't see you, "Yeah, you yawning is making me tired."
"Oh, I'm sorry, well, it was nice meeting you [Your Name], and um, maybe we can play sometime soon." You heard him say.
"Yeah, it would be fun.” You said, “I would love to play some more sometime. I’m sure you can find time in that “Busy schedule” of yours.”
You heard Tommy laugh from the other end, “Well, I mean, I’m not that busy. But we’ll see. Don’t tell anyone, but more vlogs are coming soon, so, I’m pretty busy this week.”
“Alright, I won’t keep you up too late. Goodbye Tommy, it was nice meeting you.” You said.
“Yep, you too. Goodnight!-” he ended the call as he dragged out the last of his sentence. You leaned back in your chair and looked at the ceiling, a smile on your face. That day was one of your best days.
You were definitely looking forward to the next match you would play with TommyInnit.

Abandoned (3)
*Finals are almost over! That has nothing to do with this chapter I’m just happy.*
~~~
It had been several days since Pan had left me with that sack of food and the news that my father had traded me away for freedom. I refused to believe it though. It was a lie. It was a lie to get me to stop believing in papa.
The music from Pan’s pipes could take my memories but that didn’t mean I was going to let them go without a fight. I wrote down everything I could remember. I sang shanties every night over the sound of Pan’s music. Tonight was no different. What I sang wasn’t a shanty though. It was something much softer.
“My young love said to me, "My mother won't mind, and my father won't slight you for your lack of kind." And she stepped away from me, and this she did say,” I struggled with the next line, it was right there on the tip of my tongue, “And this she did say...she did say…”
“Ugh!” I flopped back against the sand, “What did she say?”
Papa sang this to me every night when I was little. Or was it every time I had a nightmare? Everything is getting so hard to remember. Did papa sing it to me at all or was it a song one of the others on the ship sang? Or maybe it was a song I had heard at a festival or maybe a tavern?
It feels useless. I can’t even remember the next line of a song!
I pulled the pocketwatch from my pocket and stared at the unmoving hands. Pan’s unwanted words started to echo in my head.
You really do not want to face the truth do you?
No.
You wanna know how I know that he isn’t coming back for you? How I know he abandoned you here?
It’s another lie. Another trick.
He left because I told him to.
Papa wouldn’t abandon me. Papa wouldn’t trade me away!
Adults are so disappointing, especially parents. Selfish enough to sell their own children off to make their lives easier.
“Papa, please,” I whispered to the night air, “Please come back. I know you didn’t leave me here on purpose. You’re gonna come back but it needs to be soon. Please papa...I miss you.”
A soft melody broke through my quiet sobs. I turned around and stared into the jungle. I could practically see the notes floating out from the darkness and wrapping around me. I stood to my feet. Letting the music take me closer to the jungle’s edge.
I followed the song into the jungle. It was trance like but not in the way it had been before. I was more conscious of what I was doing. Choosing to follow it instead of letting myself slip completely under its spell.
After a while I could make out the glow of the bonfire in the distance. The music was coming from the camp as I knew it would be. I could just walk in. Pan had said that I would be welcome. I could join the boys dancing around the fire. I could sit and listen to their stories. We could play games. We could have fun. We could be a family…
Family.
I don’t remember much about about my family. I do remember one thing though. Papa taking me above deck the day after mama died. We stood before the crew and he said that though one of us had fallen it did not mean we were alone. We were a family by more than just blood. We were a family by choice. That was a bond stronger than blood.
Where was that bond now? Where was my family now?
The warmth drained out of me all at once and I stepped away from the camp. I need to get out of here. I need to get away from here!
I started running back through the darkness to get to my camp. I caught a movement out of place among the shadows and stumbled to a stop. There, calmly sitting under a tree and illuminated by a beam of moonlight was Pan. His eyes closed. Was he asleep? Why so far from camp? Why was he out here by himself? He had just been at the camp, hadn’t he?
This was my chance! I crept closer keeping as quiet as I could as I came up behind him. He did not stir. His even measured breaths assuring me he was fast asleep. The music ended tonight. Keeping my grip tight I knocked him on the head as hard as I could with the hilt of my sword. Papa or maybe it was mama always did that to knock people out when they were down.
I kicked him lightly with my foot to make sure he was really out of it then went about looking for his pipes or anything else useful. There was nothing. No pipes. No beans. Not even lint in his pocket!
Fine. If I can’t get rid of the music I can at least get rid of him! I grabbed his arms and started dragging him back to my camp. I silently prayed that he’d stay unconscious long enough for me to get him back which by some miracle he did. I grabbed a length of rope and tied his hands behind his back and bound his legs together. I also wrapped a scarf around his mouth for some personal satisfaction. No big words were coming out of his mouth now.
After I was sure he was secure I hauled him into the rowboat and took either oar in hand. My single person rowing was not the best and the added weight didn’t make it any easier but I had already come too far. I rowed us out until we were in deeper waters. Being out here at night with the mermaids wasn’t the smartest decision I had ever made but I wasn’t in the mood for making smart decisions.
I sat there in the rocking boat staring at the unconscious demon across from me. The moon was bright and full casting everything in pale light. I could make out mermaids bobbing in and out of the water closer to shore. They didn’t seem to be moving any closer. Perhaps they were waiting to see what would happen. So was I.
What was I supposed to do now? Killing him would be the obvious thing to do after all the grief he has put me through. Running him through while he was still unconscious wasn’t right though. Bad form. He deserved to look his death in the eye.
I cupped some water and tossed it in his face to wake him up. He groaned as his eyes cracked open. Then they widened some more as his situation became more clear. He pulled at the ropes binding him but to no avail. He glared at me and tried to talk around his gag.
“Sorry? Have something to say?” I asked, enjoying the irritation on his face.
He continued to grumble until I decided to let him have some final words. I pulled the gag down out of his mouth.
“Why thank you,” He rolled his eyes, “I haven’t been bound and gagged in so long. What’s the occasion?”
“To victory.”
“Mine or yours.” He quirked an eyebrow up at me.
“Isn’t it obvious,” I gestured to the situation, “Out of the two of us which one isn’t being held prisoner?”
“Prisoner? Is that what you think of me, swordfish? I thought this was a bit of fun between friends.”
“We’re not friends. We never have been and we never will be.”
“Never is an awfully long time. You sure you can resist me for that long? I am a lot of fun when you get to know me.”
“I think I know you well enough. Also, I won’t have to resist much longer since I can kill you at any moment. The mermaids are wading nearby and I’m sure they’d love a late night snack.”
“You brought chum for them? That’s awfully sweet for a hoard of bloodthirsty half-fish.”
“Will you stop.” I pointed my dagger at him, “Stop acting like you don’t care. I understand wanting to go to your death with dignity but you can’t be so flippant about it. Look at the situation. This is where you will die. Don’t you care?”
“Oh no, I do care. I care very much and I am impressed by this whole scene you’ve created. Job well done. I’d clap if my hands weren’t tied behind my back.”
“You are really just an ass, aren’t you?”
“Part of my charm.” he winked at me, “Please, proceed, I wanna hear where you’re gonna take this next.”
“I said to stop that.”
“Stop what?”
“Denying your situation. This cannot be having no impact on you.” I grabbed him by the collar, “So stop making fun of me!”
“I don’t know what you mean. I’m exactly where I want to be.”
“Tied up and at my mercy?”
“Obviously. Did you really think it would have been this easy? To sneak up on me and subdue me so easily? To drag me out here without any of my boys noticing?”
“You’re saying that you let me kidnap you?”
“How else would we have gotten here?”
“No. No! I beat you! You’re just trying to turn the situation around so it looks like you have the upperhand when you know I have you cornered! I beat you!”
“Of course you did. You beat me entirely. Here I am, tied up and at your complete mercy. There’s no conceivable way this could be in my favor.”
“Then why are you talking like it is?”
“Is this a trick question?”
“Pan!”
“Let’s look at the facts here, spitfire. You snuck up on me, knocked me unconscious, dragged my limp unconscious body through the jungle back to your camp, tied me up, put me in a boat, rowed me out into the middle of the ocean, and then woke me up to lord your victory over me.”
“And?”
“Do you not see the game you’re playing. I told you once before you don’t want to kill me and here is the proof.”
“All I have to do is stab you through the heart.”
“Yes. So why haven’t you done it yet?”
The realization rocked through me like a tidal wave.
“You had multiple opportunities to. You could have run me through back in the jungle. But then you dragged me through the jungle. You could have killed me when we got back to your camp. You could have thrown me over the side of the boat to drown after you hauled me all tied up in here. You could stab me any moment you choose but still your blade stays holstered. Why do you think that is? You’re bored, swordfish. You are so utterly bored and this game between us is the only thing keeping you from hurling yourself off Dead Man’s Peak. We both know it. You won’t kill me because I am the most fun you’ve had in years! You may not like it but the truth can be hard to swallow.”
I grabbed my dagger and poised it over his heart. “I am going to kill you. I am going to stab this blade through your heart and watch the life drain out of your eyes!”
“Do it then!” He shouted, “Do it! Kill me!”
“I will!” My grip on the handle tightened.
“Come on, do it.” He urged, “Do it! Do it!”
“I--I--” My hand started to shake. “AH!” I stabbed the blade into the wood of the boat.
I couldn’t do it. Why couldn’t I do it?
“Don’t beat yourself up over it, precious.” I felt a hand run through my hair. The ropes binding Pan had fallen away and he had inched forward to pet my head. “It was a good effort. You certainly kept me on my toes and I can say that this has been the most fun I’ve had in ages. But really, do not worry about not being able to kill me. It’s a big thing taking someone’s life, especially for the first time. Although, I would have been very happy to be your first victim if you had the courage to go through with it.”
“Don’t patronize me.” I slapped his hand away. “You could get out the entire time. Why didn’t you?”
“Because I was having fun. Have you not listened to a word I’ve said?”
“What kind of pirate am I that I can’t kill the one person who has given me the most grief?”
“You’re not a pirate, Lady Jones. You’re a Lost Girl.” He held out a hand, “And I am not the one who has caused you your greatest grief. We both know who is really to blame for that.”
I stared at the hand stretched out towards me. A ball of emotion caught in my throat. “He really left me...didn’t he?”
“Yes.”
I took a deep breath and pulled the pocketwatch papa had gifted me so long ago. I opened it up and stared at the inscription. Those unwilling to fight for what they want deserve what they get. “So much of a fight you put up for me.”
I snapped it closed and threw it into the ocean as far as I could.
“I’ll row us back to shore, shall I?” Pan said after a long lapse of silence.
I sat back down staring numbly at my toes as Pan rowed us back to shore. Not a word was uttered. When we got back to shore I sat down at my camp. The only place I felt safe for I don’t even remember how long anymore. It didn’t bring me any calm this time though. All around were reminders. Mementos of a life I was forced out of by the one person I trusted most.
“Precious,” Pan knelt next to me, “You don’t have to stay out here alone anymore. Come back to camp with me.”
I turned to look at him and saw the way he almost flinched when he stared into my eyes. “If it’s all the same to you, I would much rather be alone right now.”
“Of course…” He stood up again, “You know where to go if you change your mind.”
It felt like there was something more he wanted to say but he kept it to himself. I waited until long after he left before any composure I had left me and I sunk into the sand huddling in on myself. Short muffled sobs escaping me as the last dregs of my hope were drowned.
Papa wasn’t coming back for me.
a millennium of red strings | fox demon jungkook x reader
Summary: a thousand years ago, jungkook and you were lovers in a world nearly destroyed by national strife. a millennium ago, jungkook held your dead body in his arms, powerless and unable to stop you from taking your last breath, and a millennium ago, jungkook sacrificed one of his tails for another chance for your reincarnation. A thousand years later, jungkook’s wish for your life is finally fulfilled by the god of destiny, but this time, jungkook, with hands stained by human hearts and a hunger for power, is no longer the wide-eyed adolescent boy with too many hopes to be fulfilled and too many weaknesses that you fell in love with. And this time, a millennium and a thousand human hearts later, he’ll go to drastic lengths to ensure that harm will never come your way.
You reached out a finger outside of your window to stroke the petals of the peonies your brother had planted you before he had left for war. He said that when he came back, he would buy you new clothes embroidered with blooming red peonies. Your fingers touched wet coarse fabric instead of the delicate soft petals you were expecting. Your mouth opened in a scream as you launched your body back in alarm, but a cold hand firmly clamped itself over your mouth as the figure in front of your window launched into your room and pushed you to the ground. The window shut behind the figure with a firm clack.
“Don’t say anything. If you do, I’ll claw your heart out and eat it, human.’’
The voice that spoke was the voice of a young man. You tried to push him off of you when your hands brushed against something soft and furry—was it an animal’s ears? You swallowed the gasp that threatened to bubble up in your throat and paused in your struggling when you heard sounds coming from outside.
You heard footsteps slap against the mud outside of your room, and you clamped your eyes shut. Something in your gut told you that whoever was outside would do much more damage to you than the demon currently in your room.
Several minutes after the sound of footsteps stopped, the demon pushed you away. You frantically got up to your feet, trying to remember your mother’s words when it came to demons. They were scared of light; you had to get to your candle. You grabbed onto it, splashing hot wax onto your hands in your hurry, to brandish at the strange fox demon.
Your mouth fell open at the sight. The gumiho was…beautiful? In the faint light of the candle, you could clearly see his features, especially since his hood had fallen off in the middle of your earlier struggle. He had wide doe-eyes, like an innocent animal, and pretty features that were on the brink of developing into a surely extremely handsome face. His figure was lanky from what you could see of him underneath the thick red cloak he was wearing. He reminded you of the men depicted in ink paintings of mythology where demons would come down and take the form of beautiful human beings to suck the energy from humans and eat their flesh.
You realized he was looking at you weirdly, and your cheeks burned as you realized that you had called him beautiful out loud without thinking.
“You’re not…scary?’’ the fox demon in front of you spoke.
You pointed at yourself.
“Aren’t you a gumiho?’’ you knew you were speaking crudely, but he was trespassing into your room. “What do you mean I’m scary? If anything, I should be the one terrified of you! I’m the human here!’’
The gumiho blinked his pretty eyes at you in surprise, his mouth opening to say something before you interrupted him, speaking rapidly in hopes that he wouldn’t find his next meal in you.
“I saved you by letting you into my room, so you can’t kill me, gumiho! Killing your savior would be a crime punishable by heaven. I don’t taste good anyways, I bet; I probably taste like mud and bitter herbs, so don’t even think about it!’’
The fox demon laughed, the sound clear and youthful. You were an amusing human being, weren’t you?
“I agree with you. I don’t feel like you’d make a good meal anyways. I suppose the heavens will punish me if I eat my savior, so I promise to not eat you. In exchange for saving me, I’ll give you my name. I’m Jungkook. If you have a wish, tell me it, and I’ll see if I can grant it’’
“Jungkook,’’ you beamed in relief at having your life for another night, and, without thinking clearly, you put out your hand for him to shake.
“I’ll tell you my name since you promised not to eat me. I’m (y/n). You better not forget it! I’d want you to save my brother, but you look young for a demon and not powerful, so while I’m waiting for my brother to come home, you should come visit me often.”
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, his ears flicking in confusion. Your wish…You really were an interesting human being. He almost made a fuss at you calling him not powerful; he was stronger than humans, for sure, but something kept him from saying that aloud. Some strange part of him didn’t want to scare you. He reached out anyways, clasping his hand around your softer and smaller one. Your hand was really warm; he almost didn’t want to let go. And you seemed nice, too, unlike the humans his master often told him of who were greedy and didn’t deserve the hearts they were bestowed with. Perhaps some part of him wanted to spend time with you.
He had to leave though; with a nod of goodbye and a twitch of an ear, Jungkook disappeared into the rain in which he had emerged from.
You couldn’t help but think to yourself: you really were a fool to ask a demon to come spend time with you. Why did your mouth never comply with what you really thought? You jutted out your lip in frustration, though the slight hint of joy touched your heart at the thought of company.
lineage 2 | duke yoongi x princess reader
Summary:  When an engagement locks you, the 8th and forgotten princess, to the duke infamous for his cruelty, you find yourself counting the days until your inevitable death. It’s terrifying to think of your end, but when you arrive at his territory, you realize there’s a more morbid reason behind your marriage, and that the duke is much worse than the rumors have painted him out to be.
You were dreaming, at least that’s what it felt like to you. Some part of your mind knew that this was simply too vivid to be merely a dream, too real to simply be a figment of imagination spurred by an anxious mind. But you had never experienced this moment. You had no memories of this kind.
Flashes of someone’s life blinked in front of you, but the strange thing was, you were that someone. You were in their body; the skin and bones and flesh that made up them were also the same that made up you. The flashes stopped, blending colors stilling to spill a stark image onto a blank canvas as a particular memory unfolded before your eyes. You could feel the breeze of a summer’s day drift through strands of your hair, hear the soft whispering of the trees and the giggling of little fairies dancing in the wind and on your bare shoulders and arms. Their feet tapped against your skin in the giddiness of a rapid dance, the ticklish feeling causing you to let out a careless giggle as you swayed with them.
“The earth is singing. It coos and breathes and exhales its own melody,’’ the you in the dream spoke airily,’’ I can feel the song of nature in me, my child’s first breath, though that may sound quite trite to many.’’
It seemed like you were talking to yourself, or maybe even the fairies still dancing around and on you. That is, until dream you lifted your head towards another direction that you had been previously facing. The fairies all screeched before falling quiet, a silence so ominous and different compared to their previous activeness, and you could no longer feel their small feet lightly itching your skin. The air seemed to cool, the shifting from a summer’s day to a winter’s night.
“Well, I suppose you’re the only one who doesn’t find me so strange. I’m surprised you haven’t gone running from the first sight of the me behind the façade I put on before the Council. You either want what runs in my veins or…you must truly love me. Isn’t that right, Yoongi?’’
Arms wrapped around your body, and you could feel the weight of someone’s head on your shoulder. That someone pressed a soft kiss against your delicate neck before laughing hoarsely against your skin, sending shivers of pleasure down your spine. The voice was familiar. Yoongi? But why was he here? You had no control over your actions, however, trapped in the body of this someone who only giggled elatedly and maneuvered her body closer to the man.
“I can never go against you, can I? You know it’s the latter choice. My goddess…you are truly my—.”
His voice cut off, but you could feel his mouth still moving against your neck to form the last word. The dream was crumbling before you. You could feel the last sensations of the mirage you were experiencing dissipating into thin air, cracking into small bits and pieces.
As you woke up, the word he had mouthed lingered in your mind before fading like your dream had.
Obsession.
bloody artistry | celebrity taehyung x journalist reader
Summary: when the scrutiny of fame becomes too much, perfect kim taehyung finds his peace within a lavish bathroom located two blocks away from the nearest club, a corpse in the bed with him. the fans have never questioned his behavior, not when his company is much too good at cleaning up his mess to not have done it before, but when a reporter with too many questions threatens to break the peace he’s established, he finds himself in a tango with the devil that he can’t bring himself to want to break.
Your mind was in a haze, and you didn’t notice the man next to you until he was nearly pressed to your side, barely leaving a gap of space between the both of you.
You glanced at him, your tipsy mind sobering up as you realized who the man next to you was. Kim Taehyung? What the fuck was he doing here?
‘‘Another drink for a pretty lady?” Taehyung’s teeth showed as he charmingly flashed a coquettish smile at you, his already extremely handsome features increasing in beauty from the grin.
You remembered Jungkook’s words and a chill ran up your spine, causing goosebumps to rise up on your skin and freezing you to the bar table. God, were you his next victim?
You swallowed dryly, trying to calm your racing heartbeat. The reckless journalist in you wanted to take a leap of faith at the headliner just out of reach, but the rational side of you knew that that leap of faith had a much bigger chance of you ending up disappearing off for a new job opportunity overseas, as Taehyung’s company would have it. You couldn’t write a good story if you were dead, after all.
‘‘Thank you, but I can pay for my own drinks,” your lips twitched as you forced them into a convincingly gentle smile, refusing his offer softly and moving your body casually a few inches away from him,” Drinking drinks bought by strangers isn’t really my thing.”
Your smile must’ve looked less nervous than you really felt and a hell of a lot convincing because Taehyung’s stiff shoulders seemed to relax at your words.
There was a dark gleam to his eyes when he pushed his body near yours and whispered softly into your ears.
‘‘If you’re scared of strangers, why don’t we get to know each other a little bit?”
Your fake smile grew stiff on your face. You felt like you were going to hurl the convenience meal ramen you had scarfed before coming to the bar all over the bar and Taehyung’s expensive looking clothes. You could feel the sense of dread in your bones, the kind a prey animal would feel as a predator focused their sharp eyes on their weaker body.
You forced a fake laugh, trying to drive the message that you were just not interested to Taehyung. “No thanks, I have enough people I’m close to. If you’ll excuse me, I think I’ve left my friend alone for far too long on the dance floor.”
You pushed yourself off the bar table, flashing a polite smile before you headed over to the dance floor, trying to keep your pace slow and steady instead of the run you wanted to do.
Taehyung inhaled the lingering scent of your perfume, a smell that sweetly layered itself over the damp musky air of the club. His eyes, even as you tried to focus on the pounding music and forget the fear embedded deeply in your gut, never seemed to leave your form, even when you burrowed yourself deeply into the crowd away from his view.
divinity | god taehyung x demon reader
Summary: it’s a classic tale: two lovers from two different worlds united by the red string of fate only to be tragically severed by their worlds. but for taehyung, who’s lived thousands of years as the high god of beauty and the arts, a classic tale will forever remain a classic tale. well, that is until he finds one of the injured from the enemy forces in his realm, and he can’t help but desire the perfect happy ending to a classic tale with you, even if it means forcing apart the barricade of tragedy that separates you from him.
Taehyung traced the swirls of ivory and scatters of porcelain in the white marble table mindlessly, his eyes barely focused on the scenery in front of his eyes. The warmth of Heaven’s sun soaked into the soft white cloth of his tunic and into his skin, and a cool breeze ruffled his soft pale locks, sending wisps of thin strands to frame his beautiful face. The sight of him looking so ethereal would’ve inspired mortal artwork had he not been alone.
All was peaceful in his realm, with not even a servant to flit nearby the pensive god; it was much too peaceful. Peace, after centuries of war with the demon clan, was not a fortune that was often bestowed upon Taehyung. Although he was the god of beauty and art, his rank as a high god forced him to take a large role in the war. It wasn’t until today that he was given a break to go rest at his home after Jungkook, the god of war, returned back to base after winning a bloody victory against one of the demon clan’s more powerful forces.
But peace never lasted long when one was in the middle of a war, not in the mortal world and certainly not up in the heavens.
Taehyung knew something was off in his realm. He could feel it, the warning of a trespasser humming underneath his skull and throbbing in the tips of his fingers.
Was it a rouge fairy? Maybe even one of his own? Or was it an enemy?
There was no one else in his realm with him besides lower-level fairies to act as his servants, everyone else having been forced away to the king’s realm in order to give Taehyung a much-needed break from the worries and chaos of war. The servants would be unable to fight off an intruder if they were high-level enough, but Taehyung knew that the barriers he had erected around his realm when he was at the height of power would hold steadfast against most high-level demons, or any beings that had desire to harm him, or at least stave them off long enough for reinforcements to come.
Taehyung quickly pushed himself up from his seat when he heard a crackle of gravel and stone underfoot. How did the enemy manage to get past his barriers so quickly? That was impossible.
He slowly walked over, his footsteps silent against the ground, to the bush where he had heard the soft sounds of rustling come from, and the heavy odor of spilled blood invaded his sense of smell.
There was a figure on the ground, blood dripping from a torn hole in their dark attire and staining the gravel the body was limply laying on. Taehyung stood their silently, his eyes unblinking, before the figure rolled over to face him, their body sagging as they finally lifted up their head, the hood of their clothes covering their features from Taehyung’s gaze.
‘‘Help me,” they croaked out desperately.
yandere bts world | seokjin x reader
Summary:  [ENTERING KIM SEOKJIN’S ROUTE: CHECK IN...TO MY HEART!] Kim Seokjin, a hotel intern with dreams of being a top-class hotelier, finds a golden opportunity to fulfill his dream when he is forced to watch over a VIP customer’s difficult child. You, now as a pastry chef for the hotel’s kitchen, showing up should’ve just boosted his journey to fulfilling his dream, but each choice you make seems to lead you further away from the dreamy perfect ending and closer to a particularly bad ending.
You could tell who it was right away. With his breathtakingly handsome features and heart-shaped lips parted slightly, Kim Seokjin lived up to the looks he frequently boasted about on the videos you spent hours watching. But he wasn’t on the other end of a screen anymore, glass and plastic against your thumb, he was here, real and in the flesh. But you could tell, with his dye-free hair and butler-like suit, that the Seokjin before you was not the Jin that you knew before the game started.
‘‘Kim Seokjin?’‘
The words came out of your mouth before you could stop them properly. You grew flustered, trying to think of an excuse that could make up explaining to the man before you exactly how you, a complete stranger, knew his name, before realizing just how still your surroundings were.
[You are about to enter Seokjin’s route for YBW. Click YES or NO before starting for confirmation. After clicking YES, there is no restarting.]
You could barely stop your hands from trembling as you reached up and pressed the sparkling YES.
The word did a little spin, twinkling in an eye-catching way before disappearing.
A set of instructions popped up.
[INSTRUCTIONS: You are now in a world where BTS is not BTS. To win hearts and boost your romance gauge for Seokjin’s GOOD ENDING, be careful about the choices you make throughout the game. Choices will pop up frequently during your interaction with Seokjin. There will be no going back once you have started playing, and once you have pressed a choice, you can not choose another. Be warned: BAD CHOICES END WITH A BAD ENDING, in which DEATH occurs. Press CONTINUE.]
You stiffened when you read the second to last line. You knew that this world wasn’t your world, and you had somehow managed to maintain a mild state of calmness, but the warning jostled your sense of fear and caused panic to rise up in your throat. You wanted it to be a lie, but when you squeezed your eyes shut and pinched yourself hard enough to leave a bruise, hoping to wake up in your bed, your hopes were dashed as you opened your eyes up to the same opaque white screen.
You suddenly didn’t want to play the game anymore.
You thought of making a run for it, but the game, as if sensing your thoughts, popped up with another screen.
[Please press CONTINUE. Failure to do so will be quitting the game, which will immediately result in the BAD ENDING.]
Shadows Are Made Of Light: Chapter 3
Mercury was amazed while Maria was telling the story of her past. The most powerful Silver Eyed Warrior and someone he looked up to as a child, he respected her. But the story also infuriated him on her behalf. How dare they take her eyes like that? Is that what Salem would do to him if she found him?
"But I wasn't. I went into hiding soon after." Maria explained.
"I can't believe it. You. You're the Grimm Reaper. You were a legend. And then you disappeared." Qrow looked startled, shocked, appalled. It all made Mercury nearly laugh at him. He behaved like a obstinate child in front of his idol.
"How exactly does a legend disappear?" Oscar asked.
"You never used your name, never showed your face. Lots of us thought you were just laying low. Eventually we came to accept that you were probably dead. But the stories about you, I based my weapon off of yours. I wanted to be as good as the Grimm Reaper." Qrow spouted.
"Well, I'm nothing but a disappointment. So you're well on your way." She announced with a huff.
"How can you say that?" Blake asked. Mercury shook with rage. His idol, sitting here, criticizing herself.
"Child, a huntress is supposed to protect others to the bitter end. But after I lost my eyes, I only ever looked after myself. Even after my surgery, I was too afraid to fight, afraid someone would find me again, finish what the others started. You shouldn't aspire to be like me, especially when some of you are clearly stronger already. It's comforting seeing that your generation seems up to the task of inheriting this world. I'm just sorry I didn't do more to leave it in better shape."
Maria wistfully looked out over the ground they were passing over. Mercury felt rage subside slightly, she was scared, he understood that. That was exactly why he'd run after Beacon, run away to hide in Mistral only to find out that Lionheart was a traitor and he had to run again, to a place with no primary headmasters like Argus.
"When I was thirteen, I found a little girl when my father took me on one of his missions. Pretty young, a baby no older than her first few months, couldn't even walk yet. I named her Chrome because she didn't have a name. Father called her my sister but I cared for her more like a parent to a child, she was my daughter by all account. He didn't like my attention being drawn off elsewhere besides him so he only got worse toward me and her." Mercury looked at the pitying looks on the faces of team RWBY and Oscar and Qrow, even Maria looked sad.
"One day, I decided to run away from him with her. I managed to get to the next town over and I gave Chrome to a group of training huntsmen that were visiting the town from Atlas who promised to take care of her and I and take us to Atlas, since they were returning to their homeland that night. I knew he couldn't get to Atlas, so Atlas was the safest place to put her. That was until his friends found me and dragged me back home. He took my legs that day for defying him and getting rid of his only chip left to bargain for my obedience. He eventually got mad after about a week that I could no longer act as his personal maid enough that he gave me metal legs to replace the ones he took but, when he did that, I ended up killing him." He kept his composure. After all, Maria hadn't lost her cool when she was explaining.
"I would have hid too, probably found Chrome again afterward if Cinder hadn't found me there, looking for him. I would have run away and hid just like you did if she hadn't threatened me with knowing about Chrome. Because there's nothing wrong with hiding after something bad happens. It doesn't matter what you promised or who you promised it to. When you're hurt or scared and you want to hide, you do it because the person you need to save also has to be yourself sometimes."
He refused to look at the pity on their faces anymore. But he could feel the tension in the air loosen somewhat. Maria gave a little laugh.
"Thank you, Mercury." She looked at him smiling.
"Thank you for sharing something that personal, Mercury." Oscar whispered.
"I also have happier stories if you depressing bastards want something happier." He smirked.
"I think we could use happy after stuff that heavy." Ruby told him.
"Well, there was this one time Chrome decided to braid my hair as practice for her own. My hair was in tiny braids for over a week while I tried to get them out." He laughed.
"I can imagine that, that's the worst part." Yang cackled from the front.
"The great Mercury Black with dozens of tiny braids in his hair for upward of a week." Ruby chuckled. And, even if they were laughing at him, he was happy that the tension was gone now. The heaviness left in the air from those nightmares in Brunswick Farms was finally gone.
"Oh, I was thinking, Maria. Maybe you could teach me to use the Silver Eyes the way you did?" Ruby asked.
"Given I'm already training Mercury here for that same thing. It shouldn't be hard. I've always looked for other Silver Eyed Warriors to train, to teach the next generation of Silver Eyes and give hope back to this world." Maria smiled.
"You have Silver Eyes?" Ruby asked.
"How did you think we got out of that basement?" Mercury asked.
"I thought it was me?" Ruby seemed confused.
"You did the first one. The one where it got those nightmares away from Blake. I did the second that gave us time to get out." Mercury told her.
"Silver Eyed buddies then." Ruby lightly punched his shoulder.
"Hey, don't go stealing my metal limb buddy." Yang joked.
"I'm not. I'm not." Ruby stuck her tongue out at her sister. Then Ruby's scroll beeped and she brought it out. "It's Jaune!" Yang even stopped her bike.
"How?" Yang asked.
"The city?" Ruby asked. "Wait." She took the scroll from her ear and looked toward the direction that Yang was driving to find a path that led up a mountain. Argus. Yang made quick work of getting up the mountain to announce they'd arrived in Argus. Finally, this nightmare was over. They were safe.
Once there, Yang locked Bumblebee in a storage garage for vehicles. While the others waited for...something. Mercury didn't know what. He was just hoping they'd planned out a place to sleep at.
"Cute boy Oz!" Mercury looked toward the sound only to see a streak of pink as something tackled Oscar, though he helped steady them from falling on the ground while everyone else greeted team JNPR or, well, JNR. Mercury got a pang of guilt again. He had been part of the plan orchestrated that resulted in Pyrrha's death.
"Wait, who is this?" Nora asked.
"Mercury." Yang smiled proudly.
"WHAT!?" Jaune snapped.
"I've defected. I ran away. Salem would have killed me."
"Why would she kill a henchman besides you being expendable?" Jaune took out Crocea Mors, intending to use it against him.
"Because I have Silver Eyes. She kills people with Silver Eyes so I ran away and hid in Mistral. I left on the Argus train after Haven Academy was shut down." He told him.
"Why should we trust you?" Jaune asked.
"I have a daughter in Atlas. I'm trying to get to her. She should be turning six in a week." Mercury told him.
"You have a kid? A real kid?" Jaune asked, putting Crocea Mors away but laughing in his face.
"Yeah. I have her picture if you don't believe me." he angrily snapped.
"Yeah sure." Mercury pulled up the few pictures of Chrome he'd managed to get over the time he had his scroll.
"She looks just like you." Jaune hummed.
"I know, surprising considering she's adopted." He smirked.
"Alright, we can keep the stray you guys found." Jaune told them.
"Hey!" Mercury wanted to feel insulted but, honestly, it was kind of funny being referred to as a stray like he was some cat they'd found on their journey. They went onto the transit and Mercury just followed them around to Jaune's sister's house.
Mercury would absolutely not fawn over the baby Saphron had. He totally wasn't. Nope, not at all. He absolutely wasn't and no one had any proof that he was soft toward children, no sir. Mercury did take the food offered to him by Nora.
"C'mon, eat up. You can't be passing out on us." Nora shoved the sandwich into his mouth to stop his argument. It was then he realized he was actually really hungry.
He listened to their discussion this time while he ate. He wanted to know what would be happening. He wanted to make sure he could help at least. Mercury had a bad feeling, like something bad would happen to impede their journey like those damned nightmares.
"So we kinda already tried that and it didn't go super great." Jaune admitted.
"Come on, it couldn't be that bad." Yang laughed. Mercury had a feeling that she would regret saying that.
The months passed peacefully, and the McCall pack slowly let their guards down. Every week, Scott, Stiles, and Lydia would hand in their homework with a little note, giving you a time and address with just the words “pack meeting” above it. Each time you tutored Malia, she would also leave you with a little note at the end of the week. And every week, you would throw the notes away and mark their assignments. Then two of your students turned up with their throats clawed out and suddenly the Sheriff was knocking on your door. “Miss (L/N).” His face was grave, but there was something familiar about him. “Sheriff Stilinski. I just have a few questions to ask you.” Of course. Stilinski. “Come in. Would you like a cup of tea?” The familiar rattle of Stiles’ Jeep lurched along the road outside, but there was another vehicle with it. Just as the Sheriff opened his mouth to respond, there was another knock.
“Bring yourself and your friends in, Mr Stilinski,” you called, not even moving from the kitchen. Stiles and Scott filed in, followed by Allison… and her father. “If I wanted to meet the pack, McCall, I would’ve come to one of those meetings.” Scott, at the very least, had the decency to look apologetic, as he gestured helplessly between Stiles and his now-irritated father. “Stiles, what have I told you–“ “He was only concerned about your wellbeing, Sheriff.” You turned on the kettle. “Would anyone like tea? I’m afraid I don’t have anything stronger.” “Does he have need to be concerned?” Stilinski inquired, as Scott and Allison both agreed to tea. Your small kitchen was becoming quite crowded. “Sheriff, if I wanted to kill someone and get away with it, I wouldn’t have clawed their throats out and left them outside my own workplace,” you told him, matter-of-factly. “And I’m not in the habit of killing kids, no matter what hunters might say.” Stilinski glanced over to Chris, who nodded. “She’s a witch. If she wanted someone gone, she could make sure we didn’t even know they ever existed.” His voice was deeper, heavy with the weight of his years, but you weren’t surprised. Neither of you were kids anymore.
Eventually, Stilinski nodded, thanked you, and headed for the door, with a trepidatious Stiles on his tail. Scott and the Argents lingered. “Sheriff.” Father and son paused, glancing back to you. “I know it’s your job, and you’re probably more aware than most cops around here. But I think it’d be best if you take a partner to question suspects from now on. Preferably that Hellhound that’s been sniffing around the school.” A beat passed, in which the Stilinskis had a very in-depth conversation using just their eyes, then he nodded. “Understood.” The door closed behind them. Silence settled around the room as you met Chris’ eyes. “We should go,” you heard Allison prompt, quickly finishing her tea. Chris didn’t move. “Dad?” “It’s been a while, Mr Argent.” There was no escaping this. “I don’t think I thanked you properly.” “You don’t owe me any thanks.” A beat. “I’m sorry.” “For saving my life?” Shock spiralled through his blue eyes. “What happened to my parents wasn’t your fault. In fact, it wasn’t even your father’s fault. They earned what they got.” You offered him a tired, lopsided smile. “Thanks for giving me a chance.” The room was quiet again as Chris gaped at you. You turned to Scott.
“It’s 7pm tomorrow for the pack meeting, right?” The young alpha also stared at you for a long moment, then a grin crept across his face. “7pm at Derek’s,” he confirmed, happily. “Well, I suppose I can spare a little of my grading time,” you sighed, melodramatically. Scott’s smile widened. “I owe you all a bit of an explanation.” You heard Stiles’ Jeep start up outside, the Sheriff’s car already puttering away down the street. “You’re going to miss your ride.” Stiles’ voice bellowed from outside as you finished your sentence. “We’ll see you tomorrow, right?” Scott confirmed, backing towards the door. “8.30am sharp, McCall,” you teased, earning an eyeroll. “Yes, I’ll be there.” “We should go too,” Allison prompted again, as Scott disappeared. Chris nodded, vaguely. “You start the car, honey.” He chucked her the keys and she followed Scott outside. “(Y/N)…” You smiled up at him as he trailed off, so many words welling on his tongue, fighting for first place. “It’s ok, Chris.” And his shoulders dropped, as though he’d held something heavy for too long. And you supposed, in a way, he had. It took you a moment to realise he was crying, silent tears glistening from his piercing eyes. “Thank you.” His voice was barely a whisper, but he knew you could hear him. You just smiled again, a sad, sorry sort of a smile, then he bade you farewell and headed for the door. “Chris?” He paused in the doorway, a raised eyebrow glancing over his shoulder. “What do you know about cats?”
When Scott had said tonight’s pack meeting was going to include everyone, you didn’t think he’d actually meant everyone. It had to be half the town, crammed into the loft. “Derek,” the man who answered the door informed you, holding out a hand. “(Y/N).” “Is this the new girl?” Another face appeared behind him – a little older, fairer, framed in a V-neck tee. “You must be Peter,” you greeted, politely, though all you could see was Lydia huffing about Satan in a V-neck. “A pleasure.” You followed them into a very crowded living room. Allison, Malia, and Lydia were crowded together on one couch, chatting comfortably about some maths assignment. Scott was talking to two boys you didn’t recognise and the slightly older Hellhound you’d seen around. Derek immediately made a beeline for Stiles, who was perched precariously on the kitchen counter reaching for something on a high shelf. Sheriff Stilinski and Chris were talking to another woman you didn’t recognise. Then Malia’s eyes lit up and she was bounding across the room, and you were engulfed in the werecoyote’s enthusiastic embrace. “I was starting to think you weren’t actually coming,” she informed you, happily. “I’m glad you’re finally here.” “Glad to see my daughter likes you more than me,” Peter assessed, wryly. Malia rolled her eyes, but shot her father a grin anyway. By now, you had garnered Scott’s attention, and he took the floor, making the rest of the pack fall quiet.
“First off, a lot of us already know, but I’d like to introduce our newest pack member–“ You raised an eyebrow at that, but Scott just beamed back, unabashed. “Miss (L/N).” “You know, I think you can safely call me (Y/N) out here, Alpha boy,” you pointed out, as though taking the floor wasn’t terrifying. “Give him a few weeks to get used to that one,” the woman piped up, “It took him two months to process that my name wasn’t “Mom”.” Scott blushed, groaning, as laughter smattered through the room. “You must be Mrs McCall, then,” you gathered, holding out a hand to her. “I’m (Y/N), Scott’s history teacher.” “Melissa.” Her smile was warm and gentle, so full of kindness you wondered if it could soothe any wound. And then you were standing in front of a room full of strangers. Not that this was new, as a teacher, but you didn’t usually have to teach a syllabus on yourself.
But you talked anyway. About meeting Chris. About your parents. About Ennis finding you, biting you. About losing your pack brother. And then, about losing your whole pack. About fighting for your life, fighting the man who had almost been your father. About waking up in that hospital with your neck stitching itself back together. “You’re not a wolf, though.” The prompt came from Lydia, keen hazel eyes fixed firmly on you. “No,” you agreed, vaguely. Chris raised an eyebrow. You looked away. “Something went wrong when he bit me. I don’t know if it was because I’m a witch or something else, but… I became a black dog.” “A dog?” one of the boys repeated, raising an eyebrow. “How terrifying. What are you going to do, bark our enemies to death?” “Isaac,” Scott growled. “A black dog,” Allison corrected, turning all eyes to her. “Like a Grim?” “Like a Grim,” you agreed, directing a sharp smile at Isaac. “I don’t think you’d like it if I barked.” He scratched the back of his neck as Stiles snickered. Derek elbowed him. “Now, more importantly,” you turned back to Scott, “I think I know what killed those two juniors.” “Why is nothing ever just a mountain lion anymore?” you heard Stilinski groan. You grabbed your satchel from where it was crumpled by the door, pulling out a huge, old book. “A cat?” Stiles questioned, as you flicked the page open. “A fairy cat,” you corrected, pointing to the page. “A chapalu, cat sidhe, cath palug, whatever you want to call it.” “Fairy cat sounds least threatening,” the youngest boy piped up. “Great, we’ll just call the giant killer cat a fairy until it grows tiny wings and turns pink,” Peter drawled, dryly. “Let a kid dream, not all of us are hardened lunatics,” Stiles retorted, laughing. “Former,” Peter corrected, “I’m much better now.”
“Scott.” The young Alpha paused on the doorstep when Derek said his name, glancing back over his shoulder. “Why does (L/N) smell of blood?” Scott frowned, sniffing the air again. “She always smells like that. I assumed it was a witch thing?” Derek hummed, unconvinced. “Not a witch thing,” Peter mused, “Maybe a Grim thing?” “Or maybe she’s bleeding.” All the wolves’ eyes shot to Melissa as she spoke. “Don’t look at me like that. (Y/N) is a grown woman, I wouldn’t go asking too many questions if she smells a bit coppery now and again.” They all grimaced as Melissa pulled Scott to the car, muttering about damn nosy werewolves.
the promises of the future
very much based on this piece from @edorazzi‘s mentor au! takes place directly after season 3! just wondering how Bridgette and Marinette’s talk would go!
“Here, my dear, drink this.”
Marinette blinks, looking up at the young woman as she places a cup of tea in front of her. The scent of it is warm and familiar, and she feels the corners of her eyes sting from tears, not an uncommon feeling.
The woman gives her a sympathetic smile as she takes the seat across from her, folding her hands across the table. Soft music plays in the background of the quaint tea shop they are in, and Marinette is all too aware of how empty it is.
She bites her lip, digging her nails into the skin of her palms as she stares down at the cup of tea, and the woman bums softly.
“Take your time,” she assures, reaching for her own drink. “I understand it’s a lot to take in.”
“Will…” Marinette swallows, hating how shaky her voice sounds. She’s supposed to be stronger than this, but she’s not ready. She didn’t think she would ever have to be. “Will you say it again? I can’t...I don’t…”
“Of course, sweetheart.” The woman takes a sip of her drink, and then places it back on the table. “You’ve been through a lot, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, haven’t you?”
She squeezes her eyes shut, willing herself not to burst into tears. She’s Ladybug; she’s meant to be strong and self-reliant. But she’s also only fifteen.
The woman hums, watching her for a moment.
“My name,” she begins, “is Bridgette Cheng. I knew Fu as a Guardian and mentor, just like you did. When I heard what had happened in Paris, I had to come see you immediately. He might have believed you’re strong enough to handle this alone, and perhaps you are, but you don’t have to be, Marinette. Ladybugs aren’t meant to hold so much weight.”
Her head snaps up, and her one working brain cell kicks in.
“How do you know who - why would you think - I’m not…” She sputters, shaking her head furiously. “I mean, that’s a weird comparison but-“
The woman, Bridgette, chuckles lightly.
“Come now, you can trust me,” she assures, “though I understand your reluctance. I would be wary too, but perhaps there is someone who you trust that can vouch for me. If she is willing to break the rules a little.”
Marinette furrows her eyebrows together in confusion, watching as the woman pulls out a little tin of cookies from her purse.
“You can come out now, you know. I don’t think it will help her anyway if you follow the rules of someone who’s not even here.”
The young heroine gasps in a mix of horror and surprise as Tikki floats out into the air, and before she can even attempt to scream and grab the kwami and start rambling excuses for the giant bug-creature, Bridgette holds out her hand and the little god of creation gently lays on top of it.
“Hello, Tikki,” she says softly, voice full of fondness and a bit of sorrow. “It’s been a while.”
Tikki’s smile matches the woman’s tone, and she nuzzles against her cheek as she’s pulled in closer.
“Hello again, Bridgette,” she murmurs sweetly, looking back at the baffled teenager. “Marinette, it’s alright. I know this is against the rules and I normally wouldn’t encourage this, but under these circumstances, I think it’s okay. You can trust her. She’s my - She was the Ladybug before you.”
Marinette gawks, looking between the two of them for a good minute, before she shakily reaches out to her cup of tea and brings the now lukewarm drink to her lips.
“Oh. Okay,” she manages to say. “But how did you-“
“I knew what to look for,” interrupts Bridgette kindly. “I promise you no one else would have realized your identity. Also, I’m a little less affected by the kwamis’ magic thanks to my time as Ladybug.”
“Right.” Marinette stares down at her cup. “So. You’re here.”
“I am.” Bridgette opens the tin and offers a cookie to their kwami, who had settled on the table comfortably between them. “Fu was your mentor, and I’m sure he did his best in nudging you in the right direction. Or rather, what he believed to be the right direction.” She hums. “He is a good man at heart, Marinette, don’t get me wrong, but he has his flaws. And he certainly saw something in you, and I like to say I see it too. One bug to another.”
Tikki makes a little noise of protest, and Bridgette gently pokes her forehead in response.
“You met him far before my partner and I did when we were your age. I must admit, I’m a little jealous you got such helpful transformations and upgrades when we weren’t so fortunate. But Fu was learning, just like we all were.” She glances down at the kwami. “But a yoyo, really, Tikki? I would have killed for that.”
Tikki fixes her with a flat stare as she goes, “More like killed with it. You weren’t exactly the most clear-headed person back then, you know!”
“So I would have bopped Chat’s head a little more often, oh well!” Bridgette remarks. She huffs as if she’s annoyed but by the amused look in her eyes, Marinette can tell it’s all just a jest. “This is overwhelming, I’m sure, so allow me to be clear with you. I want to be here for you in a way Fu couldn’t. He had to keep his secrets, knowing Hawkmoth would be after him and the miraculous. Because of that, he also had to keep his distance. You and me, we don’t have to be like that. I know what you’re going through a little better than Fu does, in regards to being Ladybug. It’s a lot of responsibility for a teenager. At your age, you should be worrying about homework and crushes, not the state of the world. Let me be your shoulder to lean on, Marinette, someone to ask questions when Tikki wants to keep her mouth shut, for good or bad, or when you just need someone to talk to in general. I’ll be here for you, I swear.”
It’s that, that simple line that promises so much, that finally makes Marinette break, and her shoulders shake as she bursts into tears, covering her face with her hands.
Bridgette lets her cry, knowing this has been a long time coming, perhaps since the very first day, and takes a sip of her tea, glancing down at the kwami on the table as she does.
Tikki stares back, and they have a silent conversation, much like they did years ago, and Bridgette lets herself wonder if she is doing the right thing or if she is putting them all at risk even more.
.
“Where are we?” Marinette asks, now that she’s settled down a bit, finally taking the time to look around in the empty shop. “How long has it been since you’ve been Ladybug? How come I never heard of any recent miraculous activity before? Who did you fight against?”
“Breathe, Marinette,” interrupts Tikki, putting her paws on her charge’s hands. “One thing at a time.”
“It’s fine, Tikki,” assures Bridgette, chuckling. “Well, first, we’re in my mother’s tea shop. I never told her I was Ladybug, but in a way, I think she always knew. Moms can be scary like that sometimes. But this is a safe place, Marinette. It’s no old man’s secret massage parlor, but it’s comfortable.”
She hums.
“Mm. As for your second question, I want to say ten, fifteen years? Since I became Ladybug, at least. I was around your age, I believe. My goodness, how time goes by, doesn’t it? It’s been a year already for you, and you’ve been through a lot. There should have been more time to prepare you for this, and I’m sorry there wasn’t, sweetheart.”
Marinette nods, trying not to cry again. She needs to be stronger than that. Bursting into tears every five minutes won’t help her.
“As for your last two questions…” Bridgette sighs, glancing down at their kwami. “Well, Fu was always good at covering up what he wanted to keep secret, for the most part. But also, our villain - a man we knew as Papillion - was less of a showman than your Hawkmoth. He preferred striking fear more subtly than direct attacks in the day. My partner and I preferred it that way, keeping the people of Paris oblivious in a way. Anyone who really saw us chalked us down to late night dreams or rumors. People knew of us, but we were never public figures like you and your partner are.”
Marinette takes a moment to let that information sink in, and one thing sticks out to her.
“You said your villain’s name was Papillion?” She asks, eyes widening. “That’s literally...oh my god, did he have the same miraculous?” Bridgette meets her gaze, and that’s answer enough. “How?”
“Papillion was smart and always refused to admit defeat, even until the end,” says Bridgette, sighing heavily. “He had time to hide his miraculous somewhere Chat Noir and I couldn’t find it, and refused to tell us where he had hid it even after we took him in. We considered it a hollow victory, one we could live with, until last year and Hawkmoth introduced himself to Paris. If we had tried a bit harder..”
“You can’t blame yourself,” says Tikki, flying up to her former bearer’s face. “You said it yourself; he was always smarter than he admitted and hated losing. Even if he aimed for victory, he wasn’t so naive he wouldn’t have a backup plan! Plus, he was a grown man and you were still teenagers! He may have outsmarted you in some ways, but you still beat him in the end!”
“Thank you, Tikki,” says Bridgette softly, stroking the top of her kwami’s head. “I appreciate you saying that.”
“What was it like? Defeating him?” Marinette tries to look as determined as she wants to feel. “Was it hard?”
Bridgette is silent for a moment, considering what to say without revealing too much.
“It was...a whirlwind,” she says finally. “We were filled with relief and joy, of course, but we were also exhausted and…” She thinks of when the smoke cleared and they saw just who was the man behind the mask, of her partner’s sharp inhale. “We were overwhelmed, I suppose, is the best way to say it. Happy we finally finished our mission, but saddened that this meant Chat and I had to say goodbye.”
“Oh.” Marinette deflates, biting her lip. “You...You and your partner…?”
“Oh, no! I meant, say goodbye to us as Ladybug and Chat Noir, since we had to give back our miraculous to Fu,” explains Bridgette, shaking her head frantically. “Chat and I...we already knew our identities by that time. We didn’t always, but things happened, and we were sort of left with no choice after a point. We still...We still talk, in case you’re wondering.”
“Good. I’m glad.” Marinette lifts her teacup to her lips, only to see that it’s empty, and she reaches for one of Bridgette’s cookies instead. “I can’t imagine saying goodbye. I did that once, and I regretted it almost right away.”
Tikki flies up and buries herself in the crook of Marinette’s shoulder, nuzzling her cheek in some sort of comfort. The early days had been rough, that was no secret, to them or any of Paris. Even so, the kwami keeps her eyes on her former bug, watching her with something akin to regret.
“Like I said, it was a whirlwind.” Bridgette’s smile is almost sad as she looks past Marinette’s shoulder, at nothing in particular. “I’ll be honest with you, Marinette. Even if Chat and I hadn’t known our identities yet, I would have taken my earrings then and there to tell him who I was before we lost each other forever. If I didn’t, I think I would always regret it.”
She meets Tikki’s gaze, unnerving.
“We were told how important it was to keep our identities a secret, and that’s true, but it’s not fair to try and carry so many burdens by yourself when there is someone right there who can help you,” she says. “You don’t have to share your identity with anyone, of course, especially since you had Fu, and Tikki, and now hopefully me. But there are only so many things you can share with someone clearly older than you, right?”
Bridgette finally looks at the current heroine, listening intently.
“You are partners for a reason, Marinette. Don’t ever forget that.” She glances at her watch and hums, reaching for her purse. “It’s time for me to go, but I will be here whenever you need me.”
She presses a business card to the table, sliding it close to the teenager, who looks up at her in panic.
“Don’t worry, this isn’t goodbye,” she promises, voice kind. “But you’ve been through a lot the last few days. The last thing we want is to overwhelm you even more. You can reach out to me whenever you need. And whenever you’re ready to talk about everything, whatever that may be for you, I will be here. And if you can’t reach me, you can come to this shop. Tikki can show you the way.”
“...alright,” says Marinette, barely above a whisper as she clutches the card in her hands so tightly it nearly crumples. “I….thank you, Bridgette.”
The bell on the door rings sweetly as the young woman leaves, and Marinette stares at nothing in particular for a moment, her kwami waiting patiently on her shoulder.
“Marinette?” She finally calls, tentatively. “Are you alright?”
It’s a stupid question. It’s always been, always will be.
“No,” answers the heroine, voice shaking. She won’t cry. Not again, not yet. “But I will be.”
Marinette looks down at the card, trying to smooth out the wrinkles she caused.
This woman - Bridgette - is different from Fu. Both have their secrets and inside jokes with their kwamis, but whereas Fu was evasive and cunning, Bridgette is direct and warm, like an older cousin finding you alone in the guest bedroom at a family party. A stranger, but familiar at the same time.
“I’ll be alright, I think.”
She’s in good hands, she knows it.
--------------------------------------
trudging over to the beach was a feat in itself for you, to be entirely honest. from the reluctance stemming from having to meet your lying mother, to the ever comforting warmth which radiated off of chanyeol as he laid in bed beside you, the memories of last night still fresh in your mind as you awoke.
____________________________
"I..." you breathed out, eyes darting rapidly around chanyeol's face. you wanted to pinch yourself, yet you found that you were frozen in place, mouth opening and closing like that of a fish. it just seemed so... unreal. you didn't even know the man before you, yet here he is confessing to you. you didn't even know him, yet here you are equally as smitten. "I cannot, I cannot." you turned around, pacing away from him with your hands buried in your salty hair. you heard him following after you silently, letting you continue your spiel. "this cannot be real. I get kidnapped by pirates, my mother is suddenly not dead, I am supposedly a deity of sorts, and now a handsome pirate is here confessing to me. this isn't normal, none of this is normal."
"I know you're panicking," chanyeol tried reasoning, keeping his distance from you. "and I know none of this is normal. I am so sorry we brought you in this mess, and you shall never truly grasp the sorrow I hold for you." it was silent for a moment as you considered his words, eyes watering as he spilled his emotions towards you. "but I have never grown so accustomed to someone in the span of my miserable life. I cannot just let you go so easily." at this point, his voice was growing more unstable, the slightest quiver reaching your ears at the end of his proclamation. "surely, there must be something more to us. the love I hold for you, it cannot be explained within the English language, nor the meer human mindset, I..." he paused, drawing closer to you hesitantly. you didn't retract, however, and he took this as a positive sign. "I love you, (y/n)."
those words seemed to be your breaking point. all rationale finally coming to an accordance. why bother running away when you are just as in love with him as he is with you? it makes no sense for you to compare this unworldly love to that of a regular person's love. and so with this decision planted in your mind, you ran into his arms, tears of joy wracking through your body as he held you to him.
"I love you, chanyeol," you whispered into his sleeve, feeling his muscles stiffen beneath you. he pulled away, cupping your cheek with one hand and surveying your face.
"are you speaking the truth?" he asked, a smile already blossoming on his own. with a nod, you reciprocated his expression, standing on your toes and kissing him. this kiss, like the one prior, left you breathless and weak, yet a new wave of comfort washed upon you as you now took note of the underlying passion within the kiss. your fingers gently dug into the back of his neck, grounding yourself to the moment as he poured his heart out to you, holding you closer to him in desperation.
______________________________
the confession had lead to him dragging you back to his quarters, refusing to let you sleep in the same bed as your former roommates who had let you run free under their watch.
and now here you stand, shoes sinking into the fine sands beneath as the ocean greeted you in loud, raucous crashes. it was perhaps a five minute stroll in these beaches where you stumbled across your mother gazing out into the seas. just the sight of her alone left a bitter taste rolling across your taste buds, a fairly apparent grimace displayed at her bright smile.
"good evening, (y/n)," she greeted you, tone ever optimistic. you grumbled in response, the early morning sun reminding you that you could very well be sleeping beside your new beloved.
oh, how daftly foreign the concept seemed to you, having never courted anyone before on your small island and now share your heart with a once feared pirate who accidentally abducted you; it seemed straight from a fanciful romance novel of sorts.
"so, before we begin this... training session," she began, hesitating on what exactly this meet up was to you for a moment. "do you have any questions for me? perhaps any powers you may wield secretly and don't know yet?" oh, the questions you had for her.
"why did you leave us?" you asked, arms crossing over your chest in a defensive stance. she didn't seem taken aback by your question, and proceeded to answer.
"I had to leave you both." she began, smile fading as she thought back to the dreadful day she was forced to part from her daughter. "that's what us ancestors must do. if we stray too far from our duties, chaos may reign upon the earth and her inhabitants." you were too afraid to ask her to elaborate on that part, and luckily she moved on from it. "as Libra shines above in the night, representing the scale, we stand as a balance for Earth."
you stood for a moment, considering her words. you didn't really have the jurisdiction to call her claim invalid, as you're new to this whole case, so you accepted her words for the time being.
"why didn't you tell me?" your voice was much softer than before, foot digging into the sands nervously. she paused for a moment, scanning your face before taking a look at your whole being, as if you were about to disappear on her and she wouldn't see you for another decade or so.
"you were so young," she started, a fresh sheen of tears coating her eyes. "you were just barely in school, and you were already the outcast of the island. I didn't want to set you up for further alienation if you were to find out I'm a goddess. believe it or not, many people do not believe in us ancient souls."
"I hadn't even heard of your kind until yesterday." a breathy laugh left your lips, disbelief riddled your expression. "how do I even know this is genuine and not some elaborate ruse to validate your absence in my life?"
a melancholic smile replaced her prior joyous one, her patience ever so apparent with your relentless sass. she extended a hand, expectantly awaiting your touch. bitterly, you reached out as well, your desperation for answers much stronger than your discontent for this whole ordeal. her hands were course, a sign of the many years spent toiling on the waters. it faintly reminded you of chanyeol's gentle touch, the gentle scratch of his thumb gliding across your cheeks as he believed you were asleep. oh how the meer thought of him had you calmed down as your mother brought you to the waters.
"take off your shoes." she instructed, doing so as well and kicking them away from the waters. begrudgingly, you followed her lead. she took a step forward, the water encasing her feet as if welcoming her home; the home she truly belonged to. she never belonged to you nor your dear father. she was just a a pawn of mother nature. hesitantly, you followed along once more and entered the waters. it felt nothing like last night where it seemingly called to you, and you were beginning to believe you had imagined that beckon.
"clear your mind." she pressed, shutting her eyes and breathing in. "the ocean is free and reckless. your mind should reflect that. there should be no obstructions like stresses or worries."
it was definitely easier said than done, especially in your case in which you only ever thought about where life has taken you. the ups and downs, the twists and turns. too much has happened for a cluttered mind like yours to clear away. you attempted nonetheless, closing your eyes and rolling back your shoulders.
you thought about the first thing that had been bothering your troubled soul: the death of your father. the man who raised you when your mother left, devoting his life to creating the person you are now. you recalled the many nights where he would ask about your day and check your well-being even though he would have a horribly tasking day at the tavern. although he grew older and therefore weaker, he still insisted on carrying the heavy loads as to not hurt you in anyway. he protected you from the dangers of the world until his last breath. until his life was unfairly taken away from him by the pirates who have you now.
your heart tightened, allowing you to fully grieve your father's death. you don't know who killed him, but you do know that rather than seeking vengeance and showing spite to any potential killer, you should be remembering your father for who he was. nothing can be changed, but you can continue living your life the way he would've wanted and still keep him close to your heart.
what a thought. you've been so plagued by the loss around you, you hadn't even taken a moment to grieve and accept everything that's been revoked from you. you just kept moving forward, you hadn't even paused to take a breath. you were filled with anger and confusion, you didn't know how to cope with such an ordeal. you pointed fingers, isolated yourself, held grudges. you were tired. you were exhausted. you were ready to let it all go, and move on.
you thought about the pirates who took you in. as barbaric as they were, they've accepted you when no one else would. they've become more familiar to you than anyone on that dreaded island ever was. kyungsoo became your closest friend; sehun not only saved you various times, but also entrusted you with his fears; yixing took care of you when you injured yourself; minseok and junmyeon shared their time and stories with you. jongin and jongdae hadn't spared many moments with you, but you saw how they were. they were all humans. corrupt, filthy, ruthless pirates, but they were humans with flaws and passions. they didn't walk about with a chip on their shoulders believing they were mightier than you, because they knew they were flawed and had their own sins to deal with. they all adapted to you so quickly, but perhaps not as quickly as chanyeol.
chanyeol.
at first, so aggressive and hostile; the embodiment of your childhood fears. he yelled at you, picked at your insecurities and your weaknesses. you had hated him, loathed him, vowed to yourself you would escape from his clutches someway, somehow. and yet, here you are. willingly staying by his side.
you could've run by now, snagged a fisherman's boat and rowed away with nothing but your will and determination. you'd leave it all behind, start anew on a deserted island. no remorse, no fear. no ties to the past, no promises for the future. you'd be free, and leave all of this behind you. all of these pirates, these surfacing secrets.
no potential mother. no new comrades. no chanyeol.
you'd be leaving chanyeol behind. his commanding presence, his need to be leader, his ruthless demands. you'd also be leaving behind his careful touches, his admiring gaze, his heart fluttering kisses. you'd be leaving behind love. your love for him and his love for you. you couldn't abandon that. that's why you're here, drenched in water before even the birds have awoken–
wait. drenched?
opening your eyes, you found yourself in the depths of the sea, water resting peacefully at your shoulders and licking at your neck. turning around, you found your mother waving happily at the shore. she gave you a thumbs up, a proud expression gracing her features. you began swimming back to the shore, bewildered at your surroundings and demanding even more answers for even more questions you've accumulated.
"that was incredible!" she shouted to you when you were within range.
"what the hell was that, exactly?" you trudged over to her, tossing your arms downward in an attempt to expel some water from your clothing.
"did you not feel it?" she began, clutching your shoulders enthusiastically. "the water accepted you, she missed you." you gaped at her, beginning to shiver from the cool morning breeze hitting your now soaked form.
"you're telling me that the water dragged me in?" she nodded, smile not wearying in the slightest. "i could've potentially drowned, is what you're saying."
"no, because as long as you have this," her hand slid from your shoulder to your neck, tapping on a certain spot that you now recall held the shell tattoo which started this all, "you will always be one with the ocean." you stared incredulously at her, still wet and still filled with questions, but now also filled with irritation. you were scared, you were confused, and she wasn't clearing up anything. "whatever you were thinking of opened you up. you were finally free, reflecting the strength of the waters." you pursed your lips, thoughts of chanyeol still lingering in your mind. "you need to keep whatever you were thinking about in your mind, because that's your key to your powers."
"well, what's your key then?" you snapped, trying to divert your thoughts away from the man in your head and to the present.
"i didn't have a key for a long while." she explained quietly, brushing back your hair. "until I had you. suddenly, the call to the ocean was louder than it ever was. I was stronger than I ever was, and now I feel most powerful when thinking of you." your eyes softened, shoulders going slack at her words. "I'm so proud to have had you. I'm even more proud to see you growing to be such a strong woman. overcoming obstacle after obstacle. I want you to discover what's in you. i want you to grow even more. i want the best for you." she lingered for a moment longer, taking in your features one last time before pulling away. "i have to go soon."
you paused, blinking away your shock to stare at her. she had a solemn expression, head tilted and eyebrows frowned.
"excuse me?"
"i won't be gone for long. i have to clear out something. i don't want it to haunt me for longer than it needs to, but while I am gone," she stared out to the ocean, eyes wavering the slightest bit, "stay safe. i fear there's something out there. someone who wants to do you harm. do others harm."
"what is that even supposed to mean?"
"I'm not sure exactly. the ocean wants you to steer clear of this danger, though."
she turned back to you, holding out her arms before dropping them down towards the ground. with that one forceful motion, the water which lingered on your body followed her movement and joined with the water at your feet. acknowledging your now dry clothes, she bid you one final farewell.
"i must go now. I'll return soon. if you don't stay here, I'll find you. don't worry, darling." one last lingering gaze was directed to you, and with that she turned away, wading into the waters. dunking her head into the waves, she disappeared from your sight, no trace beside her touches on your neck which still held her warmth.
____________________________
you wandered back into your room, more dejected and confused than you'd been before. what possible threat could you have to face if you're here? this is literally a safe haven for your kind.
you still don't know what you are. sure, you're your mother's daughter. sure, you're basically a demigod. sure you nearly drowned half an hour ago because the water apparently wanted you. add everything up, and what do you get? confusion.
and for your mother to just leave like that? you were beginning to despise her more than you had before, as well.  what a rude woman. abandoning her daughter after just stating she has danger coming her way.
"what danger?" you muttered to yourself, crossing your arms and peering out the window to the shore. it was more busy now, a few folks wandering around for a morning stroll. you wonder if anyone had seen your spectacle, but you don't recall anyone being there. "the danger must really be out there somewhere." the water had spoken to her, your mother had explained. how can the water tell what's about to come your way? does it come with the blood connection to the ocean? the water just surveys it's surface area in search of any threats towards your mom and her kin? does she have more kids? no, she can't. she herself had said you were her only strength. as much as you didn't like her at the moment, she was still your mom. she wouldn't chest on your father like that, even though they separated as such. what would've been so bad about visiting sometimes? instead, she faked her death.
a knock at your door startled you into reality, a sharp gasp leaving your lips as you whirled around and stared at the door. danger? could it be the danger your mother warned you of? so soon? you had no way of fighting it, you didn't know how to fight. you didn't have chanyeol with you either. you could always just dive out of the window and run, but there's no telling whether the person outside can catch up to you. nonetheless, it'll give you a head start and you can–
"(y/n)?" a deep voice rumbled from outside, settling your thoughts in an instant with a relieved huff as you made your way over to the door, opening it to reveal chanyeol. although on shore, he still adorned an overcoat and had his sword tucked neatly away along his hip. he still looked incredibly intimidating in your eyes, yet you couldn't help your wandering hands which twitched to touch his curly hair. "are you alright? i checked the beach a while ago and saw no trace of you or your mother." how could someone as ruthless as him be such a sweetheart to you? he really meant it when he said he had fallen for you so unreasonably quick, and the same goes for you.
"I'm okay." you whispered out, leaning against the wooden door and peering up at your lover. lover? could you even say that? you've both established your reciprocating feeling, yet it seems strange to call him that. "my mother is gone. she left me once more."
"I'm sorry to hear that, dear." you bit back a grin at the term of endearment, sounding perfect from his lips as cheesy as it had sounded. "may I step in?"
"it's your room, captain," you giggled back, stepping inside and sitting at the edge of the bed.
"why is it that you call me captain now that I don't want you to?" he grumbled, sitting beside you with an oversized pout.
"what would you prefer i call you?" you turned so you could face him, admiring his glum side profile.
"chanyeol, at least," he insisted, "or whatever your heart desires." he turned with a nervous expression to you, causing you to smile more and more along with his request. "but how did the meeting go?"
"i nearly drowned because apparently the water yearns for me." you laughed some more at chanyeol's bewildered face, eyes nearly bulging out beneath his curly fringe. "don't worry, apparently I can't drown. the water doesn't want me dead." he calmed down the slightest bit, a soft sigh exhaled from him causing his shoulders to slump downward. "speaking of which, I'm in danger."
"pardon?" he narrowed his eyes at you, trying to discern whether you were kidding or not. sadly, you were not.
"the water has spoken, it says there's a danger out there that means to do me harm. my mother responded with leaving me abandoned on the beach."
"as furious as I want to be right now," he started, jaw clenched as he stared forward at nothing. "I'm far too nervous for your well-being to care enough about my rage." he glanced over at you, your eyes shimmering with mirth and cheeks flushing a light shade of pink. "don't worry, my flower, I won't let anything harm you. I'll protect you to my last breath."
my flower. that's what your mother used to call you when you were younger. her flower. and she abandoned her flower, never to return. until you stumbled upon her in a place you should've never been in. and all she did was leave you during your time of need. two times.
yet here's chanyeol, the man who's given you his entire heart with no hesitation, treating you as a loved one should. you're his flower. and he'd be damned if he were to let anyone trample on his flower.
lover. of course chanyeol was your lover. no one was more deserving of that title than he. the thought that he'd put himself on the line for your safety was astonishing to you, so much so that you didn't even acknowledge as a tear fell down your cheek, chanyeol reaching up and wiping it away.
"thank you, my love," you breathed out, resting your cheek on his hand and shutting your eyes in peace. as long as you have chanyeol, of course you'll be safe.
____________________________
the rest of your day went by rather anticlimactically, just venturing the isle you've all landed on. jinyoung and his crew had guided you all around for a brief while, and you became rather close to jinyoung who lived the same situation as you. it was relieving to learn that he was just as confused as you once, only to now embrace his blood and his power. eventually, they bid you all a farewell as they prepared to leave.
"let us hope that we shall one day reunite!" jackson exclaimed dramatically, hand thrown into the air in a theatrical manner. as reluctant as you were to actually relate to what you just saw before your eyes, you had to agree with him. you really did hope that you'll see these guys again. although you hated to see them all go, you knew that if it was meant to be, you'd cross paths again.
"are all pirates as friendly as they are?" you questioned, finally prying your eyes from their retreating ship and over to the man beside you. jongdae gave a brief laugh before shaking his head, eyes still crinkled with joy.
"no, this is actually a rare occurrence." he explains, also turning to face you. "if you recall, before we found safety here, we were fleeing from a ship?" oh, that's right. that's why you guys are still here and not going to heavens knows where. "well, that crew specifically is one of the most unnecessarily aggressive pirates out there. we're aggressive as well, actually one of the most feared across the land and sea, but they hold no morals." any traces of prior happiness faded at that point. "they have no heart."
"what do you mean?" you dared to ask, already losing color in your face at the prospect of nearly falling into their hands.
"most pirates have ambitions they follow freely, which is why they break free from the constraints of laws and flee to the oceans. some want riches, some want notoriety and fear." he shoves his hands in his pockets, staring out into the ocean as if in deep thought. "some want to just escape. from their own fears, their own persecutions, their anxieties." he tenses his jaw, a stern expression crossing his face. you believe that's what he's out here for: an escape. you realize you never really learned why they were out here, you just assumed they wanted to pillage and ruin lives. perhaps the ruining lives just comes as a consequence to the life they've chosen.
"but what of them?" you press on, now becoming more anxious as he delays the inevitable.
"they have no ambitions." he explains, facade unwavering. "they're barely even human. when I first heard of them, it was from a tale of a lone survivor of an island that was completely obliterated. he was too shaken to give any details apparently. the story goes that the only words he could utter were, 'the seven deadly sins.'" you gulped, eyebrows stitching together at that. the seven deadly sins? "they came, they saw, they conquered. most pirates just kill to get the resources they need while at sea, like food or money or clothes. apparently only half of the islands treasury was raided."
"what?" you muttered under your breath, imagining the wreckage of that island compared to yours. yours was devastating, but imagine an entire island obliterated by just seven men.
"they kill for sport. there are pirates who have allies and who have enemies, but they don't try to negotiate. no one has ever been civil with them because all they do is attack and kill." he turns over to you, head tilting the slightest to get a better look at you. "chanyeol doesn't try to mess with them, so you're safe with us, of course. but if you were to ever encounter them..." he lifted his hand and placed it on your shoulder, squeezing it to just the point of uncomfortable, just enough to keep you rooted in your place staring at jongdae's serious expression. "... run."
with that, he pulled away, giving you one final look before turning and entering the pub where everyone else was. you turned back to where your comrades' ship had at this point nearly disappeared, gulping as you looked beyond the horizon. maybe if you stare hard enough, you'd find where this supposed demon crew were. perhaps they're a long distance away, having given up when you all but disappeared into thin air. maybe they're still there, lurking and awaiting your return.
the waves. they seemed to amplify in sound, muting your surroundings and calling for your attention solely on them. their even sloshing lulled you into a state of brief peace before a rather harsh crash against the port had you jumping back into reality. a shiver ran down your spine, the wind from the sea hitting you and cooling your already cold form. you felt afraid, wrapping your arms around yourself as if that would protect you. far away from your spot, you heard the distant roar of thunder. the longer you stood there, the more you realized this was your warning. your mother warned you first, and now the ocean is speaking to you personally.
run.
with no hesitation, you turned and bolted to the bar, crashing in and pushing patrons as you scrambled around to find chanyeol. it should've been easy considering he was quite possibly the tallest man on the island, yet your frazzled state had you in a frenzy, desperately searching for your protector. you felt you were about to die, your lungs gasping for air even though you had plenty of it, your heart hammering against your ribs even though you ran for a mere 30 seconds at most. as a final attempt to find him, you outstretched your hand outward, closing your eyes and holding your breath. you couldn't take this anymore. you needed to be in the arms of safety you knew so well. and as if blessed by the heavens above, a familiar hand clamped around your wrist, dragging you forward and into an equally familiar chest.
"what are you doing here?" chanyeol shouted over the commotion around you both. you opened your eyes, tears obscuring your vision, yet you could identify the silhouette of his messy locks.
"we need to leave," you demanded, hands gripping his shirt in desperation. "we're in danger. we need to hide. we need to prepare. there's no time–"
"calm down," he interjected, hand placed at the back of your neck. "breathe." you did as he said, taking in a shaky breathe and burying your face in his shirt. just being with him was calming you immensely, and you were so grateful to have him beside you. "I'll go gather the boys, we'll call it a day. we'll head back to the inn and stay there the rest of the night. no one is to leave. how does that sound?"
as anxious as you remained, that idea sounded better than nothing and you found yourself nodding furiously. he never let you go. he kept you in his arms as he wrangled up his crew, dragging them all out of the pub and to the inn for the night. since it was still rather early, many chose to stay in the waiting room, refusing to settle down so early.
"yixing, stay alert. junmyeon, alert me if anything happens." chanyeol instructed, hand resting on your back as he began leading you to his room. you wanted to tell him he could stay with the guys, but you needed him by you. you wouldn't be able to sleep if you were alone in that room.
even when you both arrived to the room, you clung to chanyeol like your life depended on it. perhaps it did. your hands trembled against him, and your eyes shut tight in hopes that no tears would escape. all he did was hold you against him. he asked no questions, he knew you didn't want to talk about it. instead, he rubbed your back, detangled your hair with his hands, softly hummed a gentle tune. eventually, you did wind up falling asleep, the last thing you remember before succumbing to your exhaustion being a small kiss against your forehead.
____________________________
it was dark. even when you widened your eyes, you couldn't see anything in front of you. you couldn't feel anything, your movements sluggish and forced. as terrifying as it was to lose these integral senses, you felt nothing but tranquility.
you could hear waves. rolling against one another, crashing into the land, stirring to and fro. a symphony of oceanic noises you've come to grow accustomed to, yet this time around, it was different. each individual movement was like a disembodied voice calling out to you, begging for your attention. you were the sole listener, and with every other distraction eliminated, you could hear the voices loud and clear.
"captain!" a distant cry, muffled to the point that you had to strain to decipher the word itself.
"captain!" this was much clearer this time around. although, this voice didn't match those of the other waves. what could this be?
"chanyeol!" it felt as if the waves were getting louder, more panicked. it was no longer serene. a cacophony of crashes had you covering your ears, as if a sea storm were taking place all around you.
"(y/n)!"
____________________________
you shot up from the bed, breathing erratic and a thin sheen of sweat encasing your body. you took in your surroundings. you were in the room, chanyeol beside you. everything would've been normal if it weren't for the frightened man beside you and the cries of agony from outside.
"we need to go," he explained, tugging you to your feet and rushing out the door. he barreled down the hall, practically carrying you at this point until he reached the end, sehun and junmyeon's shaken forms waiting.
"what's going on?" you asked, peeking out the nearby window to see the familiar red which came with an abundant amount of fire.
pillaging.
"a hostile pirate crew came," sehun explained, taking your other hand and tugging you away from chanyeol.
"it's bangtan." junmyeon explained, chanyeol visibly freezing at this news. bangtan? that was the crew you were evading from before.
the seven deadly sins.
"our only hope of survival is escaping." chanyeol explained. "round up everyone. we need to make it out to the ship."
"we can fight them off while sehun takes her to the ship first." junmyeon elaborated, chanyeol already nodding along.
"sehun, you heard." chanyeol snapped, taking one last glance towards you.
pain. fear. anxiety. you could tell how troubled chanyeol was at this very moment. even he didn't know if he'd make it out alive.
I'll protect you to my last breath.
without another moment wasted, sehun pulled you onto his back, and with one last nod to chanyeol and junmyeon, took off to the entrance of the inn. you turned around for one last fleeting glimpse of chanyeol who stared back at you. you didn't know if this would be your last meeting. if you'd die, or he'd die, or you'd both die. you didn't have much time to think before sehun stumbled out of the inn. devastation lied everywhere. fires burning buildings, bloodied patrons running about.
"they're probably distracted killing right now." sehun suggested, eyeing a clean route away from the carnage. "this could be our chance. hold on." he began trekking beneath the shadows, rushing to get to the port yet trying to remain hidden. all you could do was hold on and hope for the best. the further you both got, the more distant the cries got. they seven seemed to be all focused on that one spot. how could seven measly men hold up an actual battle against an island of misfits, pirates, and gods? they were unbelievable. you were beginning to feel worried for chanyeol and the gang attempting to hold back the pirates from you and sehun. "there it is." you spotted the ship just as sehun spoke, as if a beacon of hope. sehun took one last glance around before booking it to the ship, hands grasping your legs wrapped around him to ensure your safety. you were almost there. you could practically taste victory. yet fate always seemed to laugh upon you and your miserable life, because one single gunshot crushed those dreams in a second.
sehun stumbled and crashed into the dirt, you rolling off of his back rather ungracefully. you scrambled to your knees, crawling over to the boy who was now face first in the dirt.
"sehun?" you cried, tears gathering in your eyes as you shook the boy. you tried to ignore the blood accumulating beneath him as you shook him aggressively. "SEHUN!"
"well, would you look at this?" a voice cut through the atmosphere, stalling your movements as you processed what was happening. you could hear the crunching of earth beneath boots as the man took slow strides in your direction. "if my eyes don't deceive me, you have to be the little vixen chanyeol picked up." you stared down at sehun, tears freely falling down your face as you prayed he was still alive. "you must be their ticket in here, huh? for chanyeol to have actually adopted some little nobody into his crew, you must be important to him." a small gasp left Sehun's lips, and even in your situation, you sighed in relief, clutching his arm gratefully, knowing he's still pushing through. "look when you're being spoken to." a cool piece of metal tapped beneath your chin, directing your attention to the man now standing above your seated form.
he was tall. not as tall as chanyeol, but tall nonetheless. he had sharp eyes, as if already scrutinizing your worth to him. he smirked, pushing the tip of the sword against your throat.
"my, you are rather pretty." he cocked his head to the side, a slimy smile stretching across his dark features. "chanyeol must also have you as his little toy, huh?" in one swift motion, he leaned down and yanked your arm upwards to have you on your feet. up close, he was even more intimidating. he kicked sehun out of the way, stomping his way over to the dock where you were once headed. you stared longingly at sehun who now recoiled from the pain, holding onto his stomach where the bullet pierced. he opened his eyes, watching you through his tears. the man holding you lifted a dirtied hand to his mouth, an ear piercing whistle causing you to jolt in surprise. "oh, this'll be fun. don't you worry your little head. we're much more fun than your precious exo could ever be." you whimpered, trying to tug your arm free but to no avail. "ah, there's my crew, as diligent as ever."
six figures leisurely ran over in your direction as if the world around them wasn't on fire. they were all out of breath, sweaty, and covered in soot.
"why the early callback?" one of them asked, attempting to catch his breath.
"i have our catch of the day," he pushed you forward, still holding a secure grip on your arm. "this is chanyeol's possession. well, now she's ours, of course."
"oh, how exciting," one of the other ones clapped gleefully as if he were a child given candy.
"everyone, get on board. it won't be long before chanyeol figures something is askew since I called you all back early." they all began marching towards the dock, their captain grabbing another one's arm to stop him. he shoved you into him, a hard chest catching your fall. "get her on the ship. i don't want the hassle of her kicking and screaming."
with one curt nod, the man grabbed you and tossed you onto his shoulders like you were a sack of potatoes, his grip relentless as if he couldn't care less about your pain. kicking and screaming you did do, shouting chanyeol's name like a mantra. the louder you got, the more the man's fingers would dig into your legs, sure to leave bruises in their wake. in the distance, you could see another figure sprinting as fast as humanly possible to the ship now already moving forward.
the captain of this ship headed to the stern of his ship, closest to the shore where the silhouette was running to.
"get one last look in, pretty," he insisted to you, still being carried by his subordinate. he lifted his gun, aiming it right at the figure who was now clearly chanyeol. "cause this will be the last time you ever see park chanyeol."
bang.
you gasped as the gun went off, followed by your heartbroken screeches into the night as your lover fell to the floor a few meters away from sehun who was trying so desperately to crawl over to the dock, as if he could single-handedly save you. the captain turned around, seemingly misplaced, innocent dimples accompanying a sinister and deadly grin.
"welcome to bangtan!" he shouted, stepping away from his spot and passing by you. "the last faces you'll ever see in your miserable life."
Hey! You can feel free to ignore this since it is a big ask but. As someone who dropped off the show by s8 and doesn’t really care about following the big plot points, can you recommend to me all the good Sam & Dean episodes that have happened since? (Not just angst or drama even, even just episodes with funny little moments or details?) I am like, solely here for these two being codependent and soulmates and not much else. <3 (Sidenote: thank you for your tagging system!)
Hi! Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to this; as you yourself said this was a big ask, lots of episodes to go through and remember but hopefully you’re still interested in my answer.
Now the following are not every episode where there’s a brother moment for example the s8 premiere had a great brother hug where the boys reunite, episode 3 of that same season drew parallels between the boys and a couple, if I remember correctly,  but those episodes are not included on the list because I didn’t just wanna recommend every single epi that had a brother scene just because it had a brother scene. I took into consideration if it had moments, what they were, enjoyability of the episode and if the moment or moments were big enough to make a bad episode worth recommending, I don’t wanna recommend something to you without thought and have you spend an hour of your life just to see and enjoy a flash in the pan moment you can enjoy just as much or more through gifs and clips.
In complete transparency I will also add that I did this mostly from memory so there is the chance that an episode with good moments slipped through the cracks and for that I apologize.
I don’t know at what point of s8 you stopped watching or if you stopped before the season so I am starting this with s8.
Season 8
Episode 4: Bitten. This epi doesn’t have a ton of moments or even a big one but it does have two students saying Sam and Dean give off workplace-romance vibes, and I’m a sucker for the boys being compared to or thought of as a couple.
Episode 10: Torn and Frayed. Not gonna lie, not the biggest fan of this episode, but it does have the brothers choosing each other over Benny and Amelia so….
Episode 11: LARP and the Real Girl. I said it before in another post that to me this is the turning point of the season for the better, and it has the boys having fun.
Episode 12: As Time Goes By. I wouldn’t call this one a Sam and Dean episode as in SamandDean packed with brother moments but we and the boys get to learn more about their legacy as Winchesters so if that’s something you’re interested in...
Episode 14: Trial and Error. This one has emotional brother moments with Dean wanting Sam to be safe and have a normal life and Sam asking Dean to believe in him, and praising him.
Episode 17: Goodbye Stranger. To be honest, I don’t remember if this epi has other brother moments but I am solely recommending it because this is the one where Dean learns the trials are making Sam sick and at the end there’s a scene where he tells Sam to let him help carry the burden.
Episode 19: Taxi driver. Great epi filled with protective!Dean, he kills Benny to save Sam, a beautiful brother hug.
Episode 20: Pac man fever. They argue like a married couple and Dean’s fear is shown to be losing Sam.
Episode 21: The Great Escapist. Pretty much the whole episode has little moments of Dean taking care of Sam.
Episode 23: Sacrifice. “Don’t you dare think that there is anything past or present that I would put in front of you!” This is the ‘if you watch nothing else from this season’ episode to watch. If you watch nothing else from the s8 sections of recommendations, watch this one, it has one of the best, most emotional Sam and Dean moments in the show’s history.
Season 9
Episode 1: I think I’m Gonna Like It Here. “I made you a promise in that church. You and me, come whatever.” “There ain’t no me if there ain’t no you.” I live for the codependency and for these two going to extremes to save the other including tricking into letting an angel possess the other’s body, and I refuse to apologize for it.
Episode 5: Dog Dean Afternoon. Okay, I’ll admit this one definitely falls more under the fun episode type but it does have Dean being all worried about Sam, clutching to him and threatening to lick his face if he doesn’t wake up.
Episode 7: Bad Boys. We learn more about young!Dean and see him choosing Sam over having a normal life.
Episode 15: #THINMAN. This one is an angsty one and not just because it’s the last time we see the Ghostfacers, this takes place after everything goes to shit in the boys relationship with Sam finding out about Dean’s betrayal and it contains parallels to what Ed and Harry are going through in their relationship, a protective worried Sam over Dean possibly being killed (which let me tell you is delicious to witness after all the angst and Sam acting like he doesn’t care about Dean anymore), and a bittersweet moment of the boys reminiscing about their past.
Episode 16: Blade Runners. This one is being recommended because it has some protective!Dean and because Sam being Dean’s Colette bringing him out of his MOC induced rage.
Episode 23: Do You Believe in Miracles?. The “I’m proud of us” moment, need I say more.
Season 10
Episode 1: Black.
Episode 2: Reinbach.
Episode 3: Soul Survivor. These three episodes are all being recommended for the exact same reason they have demon!Dean, and Sam going crazy trying to save him/find him. Plus, Soul Survivor has demon!Dean following Sam around the bunker.
Episode 4: Paper Moon. It has a flashback showing us just how far Sam was willing to go to get Dean back plus some emotional conversations between the boys.
Episode 5: Fan Fiction. I know people who like this episode. I know people who hate this episode. Personally, I think it has its good parts, it has some brother moments and some nods to wincest.
Episode 12: About A Boy. This one also falls more into the category of fun episode with Dean being turned into a teen, but it also has some good brother moments.
Episode 14: The Executioner’s Song. The fight scene between Dean and Cain was amazing and it has Dean collapsing into Sam’s arms.
Episode 18: Book of the Damned. Love this episode, this epi is probs the best example as to what I enjoyed the most about s10; usually we see Dean being codependent and going to extremes to save Sam but during this season we see the opposite and this episode really highlights that with Sam telling Dean he can’t lose him, telling Charlie he understands hunting is his life but he can’t do it without his brother, going behind Dean’s back and seeking help from Rowena to try and save him.
Episode 19: The Werther Project. More Sam being desperate to save Dean, protective!Dean, and Dean saying he and Sam are stronger together than apart.
Episode 23: Brother’s Keeper. Sam and Dean literally choose each other over the world and Dean kills Death over Sam.
Season 11
Episode 4: Baby. One of the best episodes, just our boys, the open road and all told from Baby’s POV. A must watch in my book.
Episode 8: Just My Imagination. The last flashback episode we ever got -  *hits 15.16 with a shovel* like I said last flashback episode we got; it’s fun, has good Sam and Dean moments, we learn more young!Sam, Sam gets some love and praise, the boys wore cozy sweaters, good epi.
Episode 10: The Devil in the Details. It has protective!Dean and Lucifer point out to Sam that he and Dean have chosen each other time and time again because they can’t stand to lose one another. What can I say, I like when the codependency is brought up.
Episode 11: Into the Mystic. Here’s the thing with this episode, I have become sort of embittered towards it due this being the introduction of a character with whom there is an attempted romance in s15 which I heavily dislike but I can’t deny that before that I really did like it, it has some good brother moments and it has Dean telling Sam he forgave him for not looking for him in Purgatory which is major.
Episode 15: Beyond the Mat. Another epi on the fun list, mostly being recommended because it has the boys having fun and that’s something we rarely get to see.
Episode 16: Safe House. Protective!Worried about Dean!Sam!
Episode 17: Red Meat. What can I say about this iconic episode? It's one of the best episodes in the series, absolutely soul crushing, codependency times 1,000. Have tissues with you when you watch it because you will sob your heart out. They turned Sam and Dean into Romeo and Juliet but better.
Episode 20: Don’t Call Me Shurley. Regardless of what a certain showrunner ended up doing to the character I do still love this episode and it has some great Sam and Dean content with Dean preferring to possibly die with Sam, telling him he’d never leave him and the return of the Samulet.
Episode 23: Alpha and Omega. Emotional brother hug, Dean saying he and Sam need each other.
Season 12
Episode 5: The One You’ve Been Waiting For. I’m gonna be honest, I don’t remember much of this episode other than I enjoyed it and that it had some fun moments between the boys.
Episode 9: First Blood. I’m truly only recommending this because it had,  Badass!Winchesters.
Episode 10: Lilly Sunder Has Some Regrets. Funny thing about this episode was it was supposed to be all about C but it ended up being enjoyable and filled with little Sam and Dean moments including some protective!Sam.
Episode 11: Regarding Dean. Jensen’s acting in this episode is next level, and it is filled with little brother moments.
Episode 18: The Memory Remains. The only reason I am recommending this one is because it’s the one where the boys carve their initials on the table which was a major moment.
Season 13
Episode 8: The Scorpion and the Frog. Another fun episode that’s filled with little Sam and Dean moments.
Episode 11: Breakdown. For so long I talked about Dean being Sam’s knight in shining armor it’d be wrong for me to not bring up the episode where it happened. Also, Dean tells Sam he’s there for him.
Episode 12: Various and Sundry Villains. It had some fun brother moments.
Season 14
Episode 4: Mint Condition. Fun Hallooween episode with fun,  little moments. Absolutely loved this one.
Episode 11: Damaged Goods. This isn’t really a Sam and Dean episode, or at least I don’t consider it one but the ending scene between the brothers where Dean tells Sam he’s the only one that could have changed his mind about throwing himself into the box was beautiful.
Episode 12: Prophet and the Loss. The brother hug to end all brother hugs. Absolutely amazing episode, packed with brother moments including what’s probably the best brother hug, will sing its praises till I die and then I’ll continue singing them in the afterlife.
Episode 13: Lebanon. The 300th episode. It has some moments between the boys as well as some touching scenes of the boys with their dad.
Season 15
Episode 4: Atomic Monsters. Is this partially on the recommended pile because Jensen directed it? Yes but nonetheless it’s a pretty good epi that while not super packed with brother moments does have them. (Also, this is the last season and I’m sad to report we are scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find Sam and Dean content in this dessert.)
Episode 11: The Gamblers. Good brother moments and the boys get called heroes which I love.
Episode 13: Destiny’s Child. The sole reason I am recommending this episode is for AU!Sam and Dean, they are the funnest thing this show has done in a while.
Episode 14: Last Holiday. While this doesn’t really have Sam and Dean moments with the exception of Sam telling Dean he should have called him to let him know he was in trouble, it does have the boys being taken care of and getting to have some fun and that’s something we so rarely get to see that I am including it.
Like I said, this is not a definitive list of every single episode that has Sam and Dean moments there’s episodes like the most recent one, 15.17, that had a beautiful moment between the brothers but I didn’t list the epi here cause I don’t think it’s necessary to watch the whole episode for it when it can be seen and enjoyed just as much by watching it through a clip. Which while I don’t recommend the whole ep I do highly recommend looking up the end and seeing the brother moment; point is, similar to 8.01 or 15.17 there were other episodes that had moments that weren’t included due to seeing the whole epi not being necessary to enjoy the moment.
Chapter 6–Not Eve; Scene 3
master of the heavenly yard pages 139-151
--Gumillia had only told Allen that she was “searching for the Deadly Sin Contractors who had escaped from hell”, leaving out the details from the “meeting of the three worlds”. That had been Sickle’s decision.
…Don’t like it.
Gumillia thought to herself as she walked through the Hellish Yard, carrying two women in her arms.
Sickle…Everything was dressed up in pretty words…but the facts are full of contradictions.
The idea was to erase the “influence of the Second Period”—but if so, didn’t she, Michaela, and Sickle also fall under that “influence”?
In the end, she didn’t like that Sickle wasn’t going along with their own line of thinking.
Sickle values protecting the “Rules” above all other things—that’s what Michaela told me.
But if that were the case…why hand the world over to a being like Allen who was outside the Rules?
Or rather…”Because” he’s outside of the rules. Perhaps Sickle is trying to restore things to that framework by putting them under the management of an “Irregular”—
--Riliane was still struggling in her grip.
“Put me down already! You brute!”
They were already in the center of the Hellish Yard. There was no longer any need to restrain her further.
Gumillia released her, and Riliane then fell face-first onto the ground.
“…. You could have put me down more gently!”
“Nothing but complaints, as usual.”
“…? Do I…know you? –Take off that mask and show me your face!”
“No. You wouldn’t recognize me, by my face anyhow.”
Under the mask—her true face was different from the one that Riliane knew.
The crewmembers that had been on the spaceship “Climb One”…among their number had been a female researcher named Gumillia.
She had returned now to the face she had back then.
“I’ll tell you my name. I—am Gumillia. I was once the apprentice of the sorceress Elluka.”
“…Ah, I remember. You were there back then. Though you didn’t talk much.”
“Let’s go quickly. Others are waiting.”
Gumillia pushed on ahead, pulling Riliane forcibly by the arm.
.
--“The Judgment Door”.
When the souls of the dead passed through it, they would head off to either Heaven or Hell.
She could see three people standing before it. They were still a ways off, so she couldn’t clearly see their faces.
“And those are?” Riliane asked Gumillia.
“’Deadly Sin Contractors’—to be accurate, the people with best ‘compatibility’ with the ‘Demons of Deadly Sin’.”
“…What a roundabout way of speaking.”
“In these three, two of them didn’t actually contract with a demon. So calling them ‘Deadly Sin Contractors’ itself, is incorrect.”
“If they’re not contractors then wouldn’t there be no need to lock them up here?”
“But, the fact remains they are sinful people, with deep connection to the demons—Just like you and Prim.”
“…”
The people before the door appeared to have noticed them. A woman in a red kimono raced over.
Upon seeing that face for herself, Riliane unthinkingly let out a scream.
“Gah! Y-you’re…Sudou Kayo!”
Hearing her name called, Kayo curiously looked at Riliane.
“Dear me…You know of me, young foreign miss?”
“Ch, don’t play dumb—Oh, that’s right. You wouldn’t know me looking like this.”
Riliane employed her imagination, and instantaneously changed her clothes.
--From her princess dress to the kimono of a town girl.
And as she did, she altered her manner of speaking to match.
“Look. Surely you remember now, with me in this outfit?”
“…My my! Are you Rin-chan of the Miroku family!?”
“So you finally remember. …Though my face hasn’t changed a bit.”
“Long time no see. Are you well?”
“Of course I’m not well! That you even have the gall to ask! –You killed me.”
“That’s true…I’m sorry,” Kayo said, deeply bowing her head.
“…”
She said her apology with such sincerity that Riliane was unable to come up with any more words of reproach.
In place of Riliane’s retorts, Gumillia spoke up to Kayo. “Are you, feeling better?”
“Yes, ‘Master of the Hellish Yard’. I think the air aboveground didn’t agree with me, and it made me a little confused…But I’m much calmer now.”
“I see, that’s good. …Are the other two behaving?”
“Yes…For now. Though I’m a little bothered by the Duke-sama’s constant attempts to talk to me.”
“…Venomania’s not changed. The gall, to make passes at his own descendant.”
The two remaining by the door slowly started to walk their way.
Riliane was shocked once more.
“My beloved Kyle!? –Wait, no.”
They looked alike, but they were different people.
He was the Dark Star Bureau Director Gallerian Marlon.
“…What is this—One acquaintance after another.”
Having come close enough, Gallerian saw Riliane and gave her a curious expression. “—You there. Have we met somewhere? You look familiar…”
“…Sigh.”
After Riliane sighed she once more changed clothes.
This time she was in a red coat and a red cap.
“--! You’re—‘Postman’!”
“Exactly. It’s been a while, Gallerian.”
“So you…were a girl. And you can talk?”
“I became able to talk. After you died.”
“…Where is Ma now?”
“Don’t know.”
--The other man, Duke Venomania, looked to Riliane first. Then he saw Prim, still unmoving in Gumillia’s arms, and he snickered.
“Two women this time, huh. We don’t need any more men here, but women’ll get a warm welcome from me.”
Riliane had never met him directly, but she had caught his name in history books.
So this is Duke Venomania. He’s exactly the lech history says he was. …Let’s keep from getting close to him.
Gumillia conjured up a humble chair with her imagination and sat Prim down in it.
“This makes five. Next—Banica Conchita,” she muttered, then turning to Kayo.
“Kayo. I trust you, to take over watching after them.”
“As you like.”
After seeing Kayo nod in agreement, Gumillia looked up.
“—Wait a second, Master of the Hellish Yard.”
The one who moved to stop her was Gallerian.
“You need something, Gallerian?”
“Why are you capturing ‘Deadly Sin Contractors’?”
“That’s self-evident. To capture those who escape from hell—is my role.”
“Oh? Leaving aside Venomania and that black-haired woman sitting over there, I’ve never seen these other two in hell.”
“…Very well, I’ll tell you the truth. It was what the Sun God decided. He ordered me, to watch over you so you don’t do anything rash.”
“God…Hey now. I didn’t take you for the type to obediently follow along with what that bat tells you to do.” Gallerian glowered at Gumillia. “It’s no use trying to pull the wool over a judge’s eyes, Master of the Hellish Yard. You—are trying to protect us, aren’t you?”
“…”
“But in my opinion…this is a lukewarm attempt.”
At some point, Gallerian had been clutching a gavel in his hand.
“Do you think they’ll give up just by tossing us into the Hellish Yard? They’ll chase us down here—Just like this!” he shouted.
Then, he struck the earth hard with the gavel.
The ground cracked open in a radiating fissure starting from that point.
“Wh-what did you do!?”
The answer to Riliane’s question became clear soon enough.
A green-haired girl floated out from within the crack.
Upon seeing her, Gumillia’s face twisted under the mask.
“Tch. So you’ve already gotten in. ‘Sleep Princess’—Eve Moonlit!”
Appearing to have judged this was an emergency situation, Kayo conjured up two pairs of scissors in her hands.
She wielded them like weapons, and leaped at the Sleep Princess.
--However.
Someone flew up before the Sleep Princess and stood in the way to shield her.
…It was Prim, who should have stopped being able to move with her time frozen.
She tightly grasped both of Kayo’s arms.
“Ghk…She’s too strong.”
Prim’s eyes were open, but they seemed devoid of consciousness.
Gumillia reasoned that she must have been controlled by the Sleep Princess’ “hypnosis” ability.
…Not good. One false move and everyone here, may end up being controlled—
Behind the Sleep Princess, Gallerian folded his arms and grinned boldly.
“Hmph, you’re quite unprepared, Master of the Hellish Yard. –And, it seems you’re somewhat mistaken.”
“…?”
“She—is not Eve.”
“--!? Then who—”
“She is my beloved daughter. Michelle has borrowed Eve’s power and made it her own.”
“And here I thought you’d say something useful…It seems you’re already, caught up in Eve’s spell.”
“It makes no difference to me if you don’t believe. But—that doesn’t change the trouble you’re all in!”
Gallerian conjured a gun in his hand, then started firing it at Gumillia and the others.
“Eek!”
Riliane fell to the ground, cowering.
“…”
Gumillia assessed their gap in battle potential with the current situation as she dodged the bullets.
…Riliane probably won’t be much use. She did contract with the demon of ‘Pride’, but she never used its power in life. Kayo…has her hands full with Prim.
Kayo had thrown off Prim’s hands and was slashing at her over and over. But Prim deftly dodged each time.
Thinking on the difference in physical ability between them when they were alive, Kayo should have been much stronger than Prim. But right now the two of them were mere souls—Perhaps Prim had been released from her mental limiters by the Sleep Princess’ power.
Then I should leave Gallerian to Venomania, and take on Eve myself—
Just then, Venomania evaded the bullets with a grin and approached Prim.
“You’re in my way, Duke-sama! Please step aside!”
“Come now, it’s not nice for a woman to be swiping those things around. …Even a married woman like yourself,” Venomania said, seizing Prim’s arms. “I don’t like to see women fight each other.”
His eyes began to bewitchingly shine.
“Let’s—stop now.”
“…Okay.”
Prim’s cheeks reddened, and she dashed into Venomania’s embrace.
Gumillia watched this go on with amazement.
He controlled Prim with his “Lust” magic!? Good grief…
So, the Sleep Princess’ hypnosis could be counteracted by Venomania’s lust spell—
Gallerian appeared to notice this as well.
“…Michelle. Enough with the hypnosis. Use ‘gift’.”
“Got it, Papa.”
A mist began to emit from the Sleep Princess. A deadly green poison that would put everything to sleep.
However—
“…Papa, it’s no good. My mind is…turning to Eve…”
“What!?”
“I—I am…the Sleep Princess…I am…”
The Sleep Princess crouched on the spot, and at the same time the mist disappeared.
Gallerian ran to her.
“That’s enough. Don’t overdo it. Any more and you’ll lose yourself.”
“Okay…I’m sorry.”
“…Seems we’re at a disadvantage.” Gallerian looked around them. “Michelle, let’s draw back for now. Are you…able to destroy the barrier?”
“…Yeah. It’ll just take one more.”
Thunder suddenly boomed through the Hellish Yard.
There was a flash blindingly bright—and when it had cleared, Gallerian and the Sleep Princess were gone.
“--They got away,” Gumillia muttered, annoyed.
When she did, the mask that she was wearing suddenly started to laugh.
“Ha ha hah, they broke the barrier so easily. It was improvised after all, so I suppose there’s nothing for it.”
“This isn’t a laughing matter, Seth. –That damned Gallerian. So he was in league with Gammon.”
“Looks that way. Well then…What do you intend to do now?”
“It’s obvious. I have to bring him back here again.”
“And the other ‘Deadly Sin Contractors’ with him.”
“…?”
Gumillia abruptly looked around her.
…Venomania, Kayo, Prim, and Riliane. She finally realized that all of them had vanished.
Seth laughed again.
“They must have been pulled back up to the ground world by gravity. Bound to happen, now that the barrier’s been destroyed.”
“…Sigh. I guess I’ll, start over again.”
“We’ll have to fix the barrier first. Otherwise we have no place to lock them up.”
“…We don’t have much time.”
“I know. So let’s get started.”
ADA: Songs the BSD characters remind me of (even though no one asked)
I’ve recently watched all 3 seasons of the Anime, the movie and the OVA and have started reading the Manga from the beginning. Right now I am only at chapter 40 because I started reading like 2 days ago, so idk stuff that would happen after the Anime storyline (if it goes that much further than season 3 ending, I wouldn’t know). I based this off on either specific lyrics that made me think it would fit the character or a certain vibe I was getting from a character. For some characters it was easier, for some not so much lol It is why some characters have multiple songs that make me think of them while others only have one (if they even do have one, that is – but the ADA does, except for Katai). So please do not rip into me because you think a song might not fit them as well as I do, because I just have not gotten to the latest chapter of the Manga yet, so there are some characters I do not know that well yet but I wanted to do this for fun. Other than that, I hope you enjoy this list~ Also, feel free to add to my list if you have songs that I haven’t mentioned but think would fit the characters, if you want to~
My taste in music is also pretty broad and not limited to certain languages or genres (though I do have my preferences), so I will provide translations of the lyrics in different languages from English. The German ones (like Kontra K, Elif, etc.) were translated by myself (on the spot), for other languages like Romanian or Korean, etc. I had to look up translations on the internet.
Disclaimer: For the songs for Dazai, one might want to consider a TW, for one of his songs has extremely open-no-room-for-speculation suicidal lyrics. If this affects you, please skip that one, I will put that song last on his list.
And, well, because this is 12 pages long in the document, I will be making a cut here…
💙 Wölfe (Wolves) by Kontra K 💙
It’s about so much more than just strength, it’s about solidarity and virtue / It runs so much deeper than your wounds could ever get / We’re walking through the fire together until the day we die […] /
And we are so infinitely far away from being perfect / But what doesn’t kill us will make us stronger / And hope dies last / It dies last /
A lot of the members have been through quite some shit, but they hold it together all the time and always pull through and manage to keep moving forward sooo (some random arsehole I talked to spoilered me about Yosano and Mori  -_-)
💙 Born For This by The Score 💙
A force that they can’t stop / They just don’t get it, I think they forget / I’m not done until I’m on top / I know I was born for this / I know I was born for this […] /
We are the warriors, who learned to love the pain / We come from different places but have the same name / ‘Cause we were born for this / We are the broken ones, who chose to spark a flame / Watch as our fire rages, our hearts are never tame /
💙 Believe by Hollywood Undead 💙
I can’t believe / That when I breathe / That there’s something good inside of me / Just one good thing inside of me / So close to me / That memory / Of that one good thing inside of me / Just one good thing inside of me /
If I went out the back door, nobody would stop me / But, where would I go? / ‘Cause I ain’t never had a real home / So, what do I know? / So, I could keep runnin’, hide until they find me / But, what would that do? /
That he really hates himself that much and how insecure he is in his right to be alive not just simply because he is a living being really hurts to see.
💙 Face it by NF 💙
Don’t know how to face it / Let’s go back to basics / Yes, say what you mean, do what you say, but man I hate this / I just don’t know what I’m chasing, don’t know what I’m chasing / Yes, somebody told me / Life is something you don’t wanna play with / But I just keep on playing like life is just a playground […] / I look at myself and I ask what the goal is / Yeah, tell me what your goal is / I’m just so lost in emotions, I don’t even notice / I just slip into a place and I don’t think straight / Devil in my ear tryna tell me everything’s great / And in a year realize I’m in the same place / Running in the same race, same pace […] /
Get that sickness out my mouth / I feel like my train is derailing / I can feel it / Yo these words are only words until they actions / Words until they actions, strive on empty satisfactions / Yeah, the fact is I don’t know, fact is I don’t know /
💙 월식  (My Tragedy) by Taeyeon 💙
At the end of an empty day / Everyone busily returns from somewhere / In the red night sky / I disappear into the darkness little by litte / These many sparkling lights / There isn’t a single light that’s mine / Under the cold shade by myself / Like it wasn’t there from the start /
💙 Oceans by Jacob Lee 💙
I learnt to let go when I was younger / Scared of growing old / I would swim far into the ocean / And try to stay afloat / Until my lungs would cough up water […] /
I don't want love no more / Though it's the one thing I've been searching for / Though it's the one thing that I miss the most / Now I'm afraid to be alone / I learnt to grow old when I was younger / Scared of staying young / Afraid of the thoughts that I had conjured / That sat atop my tongue / Knowing I'd change the worlds opinion / If they would just, listen up / But they won't, now /
I feel worthless / Maybe I should open the drawer / Burn the pages / Write poems with the ash on the floor / Pour the ink, into the sink / And watch it drain from the shore /
I know Dazai has a looooot of songs, but tbh I could’ve added at least another 15 because. There. Were. Just.  S O .  M A N Y .  T H A T  F I T  H I M  S O  W E L L ‼‼ (Well, at least the ones I could think of off of the top of my head right away.)
💙 Believe by Hollywood Undead 💙
Don’t you know, little boy, they’ll lay you to waste, man / Little do they know, every song is a lifespan / Yeah, they’ve taken one, but I’m takin’ my last chance / To hold all we know and let go with both hands / Though, don’t you know that plots are made from concrete / Right through the stone, can you hear my heart beat? / Beats through my bone, like no memory left me / Not for a second or a minute when I dream […] / My heart beats heavy in an open chest / And, I wanna say goodbye, but there’s nobody left /
I broke it all, and I put to the test / Put your hands in mine, and feel this emptiness / There’s no beat in my chest / ‘Cause there’s nothin’ left / No, it ain’t goodbye, its a last caress  / What’s another dream? / You could hardly sleep /
Makes me think of Oda aka the bond they had aka the admiration Dazai had for him.
💙 Face it by NF 💙
I ain’t sleeping lately / I ain’t sleeping lately / Yes, I know that I’m the only person that can change me / Maybe, that’s why I ain’t changing / That’s why I ain’t changing / I got too much on my mind, I guess I don’t know how to face it /
He obviously has a lot of issues, and I bet he still doesn’t think of himself as a good person. It strikes me as if he’s thinking that Agency Dazai is not much different from Mafia Dazai. “Your hands are black. Mafia black,” as Higuchi said. I think he did not deny it when she said that, so he doesn’t disagree with her.
💙 Rain by Hollywood Undead 💙
I don’t mind, no I don’t mind, I don’t mind the rain / Simple things and subtleties, they always stay the same / I don’t mind, that I don’t mind, no I don’t mind the rain / Like a widow’s heart, we fall apart, but never fade away (fade away) /
Run like a child, do you know where I came from? / No, I don’t, but I’m singing all the same songs / I’m alone, and you’re looking for your anyone / Does it hurt just to know that it’s all gone? / I can feel the pain in the words that you say / Hidden in the letters that were written to no name […] / Buried in red, white, and a side of some blue / Some will die too late, and somebody too soon / If he could come back, we’ll see what it cost him / We had to lose it all, just to know that we lost one /
💙 Lass mich lieber allein (better just leave me alone) by Kontra K 💙
Man, don’t explain the world to me, it isn’t perfect / And just as imperfect are also you, her and me / All of that isn’t a problem to me / But tell me, since when does hatred laugh so audaciously into my face? / But it’s somehow alright for me […] / Man, I wish for a minuscule part of naivety back / But it seems it’s somehow too late for me / Somehow already too late for me […] /
Already been wandering for so long, you forget / Who is worthy of sacrificing yourself for and for whom you better not do it / You run along the street of success without any luck (on your side) / But she walks out of hell into heaven only once and then right back / If you end up where you started then where is the meaning? /
Because I also have my baggage to carry all on my own / Just like all of the fuckers that think I’m living in heaven all by myself / But the fire and the flames in which I’ve been standing in for so long already / Man, they refuse to see them / But it’s somehow alright for me /
You better just leave me alone / Because when they carry you on their hands, they will (eventually) let you drop / I’d rather fall alone/by myself / Rather alone/by myself /
💙 Lies by Will Jay 💙
I'd rather tell myself if I ignore / These thoughts they'll go away / And my toxic friends have changed / Truth is I hate confrontation / Deal with it tomorrow / 'Cause there's nothing I can do / That's my favourite excuse / Feeding my procrastination […] /
And I think I just realised I would do anything / To keep hiding the pain I've been burying / That's why I tell / Lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lie-lies /
💙 Du willst es (You want it) by Kontra K 💙
Only the good ones die young, and not long after the best ones follow / No idea, ask death why he thinks that I am so damn bad / Still here, we’re almost not worthy of heaven / Working day for day, only the hatred kills the pain / Life will shoot you in the chest but only ever hit your heart / Thank God that place in my chest has been emptied a long time ago […] /
We asked God, “why” / But the devil said, “doesn’t matter” / We’re swimming in a pool full of misery / But bring us another glass of it /
💙 Wie gemacht dafür (like we were made for it) by Kontra K 💙
Pretty normal, normal / Because you can’t get me, get me further down (the hole/ditch) / Than I’ve already been, you get it? […] / I’m going one-on-one with my inner demons, and I’ve been doing that for the past 13 years / I’ve been there, no matter what happened / Ask your gangsters, they know my voice / Have respect, respect for the realness / But fucking piss me off, and I’ll be sending you to heaven […] /
What pressure are you talking about, I inhale this city deep into my lungs / Put it on the beat and I’ll be giving you a new reason for your hatred /
Like we were made for it, we’re running through hell barefooted / We’re living rent-free in their heads, with the real ones, with the real ones / Like we were made for it, always loyal to my people / Swapping none of my friends for money, for the real ones, for the real ones […] /
If you’re my enemy, I’ll give you lead (bullets) / If you’re my friend, I’ll give you love / Because a wolf stays fucking loyal only to his family /
💙 Lonely by Nathan Wagner 💙
Is everybody lonely? / Is everybody scared? / Is everybody worried / That no one really cares? / See I'm afraid to love, but afraid to be alone / Still I wonder why my heart is always broke / What a way to live, let the fear take all control / Oh, this ain't life, no / I'm not alive […] /
'Cause I'm afraid to show the people who I am / I'm not special, I'm just a simple broken man / So I will hide my face with my picture perfect mask / Oh, this ain't life, no / It's just a lie […] /
If I looked you in the eye / And showed the broken things inside / Would you run away? / Would you run away? / If you saw my darkest parts / The wicked things inside my heart / Would you run away? / Or are you the same? /
The following one makes me think of Mafia Dazai
💙 Body Count by Grey ft. Thutmose 💙
I got a hunger, I got a fever / And it just won't quit / I got a temper, I got a bullet / With your name on it / Everybody wonders what it's like on top / I don't gotta wonder 'cause I call the shots […] /
My blood runs cold and my feet run faster / I still got heart, I hear a heart don't matter / Say what you want and it'll be your last words / It ain't a secret, I got a hit list / And baby, you're up next /
Stack 'em up, stack 'em up / Teach 'em not to fuck with me / Bag 'em up, bag 'em up / Let 'em know who runs these streets / Take 'em down, take 'em down / Count 'em out like one, two, three / Add a-na-na-na-na-na-na-nother one  / To the body count /
💙 Bullet by Hollywood Undead 💙
Gone too far and yeah I'm gone again / It's gone on too long, tell you how it ends / I'm sitting on the edge with my two best friends / One’s a bottle of pills, one’s a bottle of Gin / I'm twenty stories up, yeah I'm up at the top / I'll polish off this bottle, now it's pushing me off / Asphalt to me has never looked so soft / I bet my momma found my letter, now she’s calling the cops / I gotta take this opportunity before I miss it / 'Cause now I hear the sirens and they're off in the distance / Believe me when I tell you that I've been persistent / 'Cause I'm more scarred, more scarred than my wrist is / I've been trying too long, with too dull of a knife / But tonight I made sure that I sharpened it twice / I never bought a suit before in my life / But when you go to meet god, you know you wanna look nice /
We hit the sky, there goes the light / No more sun, why's it always night / When you can't sleep, well, you can't dream / When you can't dream, well, what’s life mean? / We feel a little pity, but don't empathize / The old are getting older, watch a young man die […] /
When you were young, you never thought you'd die / Found that you could but too scared to try / You looked in the mirror and you said goodbye / Climb to the roof to see if you could fly /
So if I survive, then I'll see you tomorrow / Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow
💙 Brunette Ambition by Qveen Herby 💙
'Cause it's been three weeks and four days / No days off, just runways / I’m fucked up, I'll throw shade / Outwork you on a bad day […] /
On a mission, got no competition / It's hard to sleep with brunette ambition / Revenge is sweet, pussy: my religion / They say slow down, but I never listen /
Old me forsaken, these rules are for breaking / I get lonely with no new friends / Associate, but they can't relate / When you want the world, they’re uncomfortable /
This one is 50% lyrics, 50% overall energy of the song. Yosano is a bad bitch, and I love her.
💙 STFD by TeZATalks 💙    [Flash Warning for epilepsy]
I'm not here to take no names or reservations / I'm the devil telling Satan I'm just wild / Sit the fuck down / Imma kill it let me live just how I'm livin' / Ghetto heart with good intentions / I'm just wild / Sit the fuck down /
I'm chasing freedom for the fearless / I gotta do it 'cause I can't chase fear myself / I'm 'bout as broken as I confess / But better than most that lay cower / Proud of who they crowd / You don't know me / Coming to take your crown / Bow down / You know that I can do better, better / I don't need you to come in and show me how / Settle down / Cause you know that I can do better, better /
This song is mostly just the vibe for me. Quite…. unapologetic. Like the badass bitch vibe Yosano gives off, despite (or probably especially because of) her past.
💙 Nur mir (only to myself) by Elif 💙
Can’t believe what’s happening to me / Your words have manipulated me / I shouldn’t lose the connection to myself / Because otherwise your words will always stay with me / At first, you were there for me / But then you wanted me as your property […] / This city is big enough for the two of us / I have to share it with 4 million others anyway / I get onto the same train, stand on the same platform / Oh, everything’s profit (to you), everything’s yours /
But I only belong to myself, only to myself / Belong to myself, only to myself / Not to her, not to him, not to you /
💙 Disease by Hollywood Undead 💙
Our words are broken but they’re spoken aloud / So come together, come together again / The time is now, let Armageddon begin / They say beginnings always start with the ends / I say forever and forever, Amen /
Forget what you are / Forget what you feel / We stand apart but fall together / Nothing ever lasts forever /
We’re born to live, we’re born to die / We’re forced to swallow these pills and to never ask why / What I’ve become, why can’t you see / That everybody, everybody, everybody’s got this disease? /
Honestly, finding a song for Ranpo somehow was harder than it should’ve been lmao Originally, this song is about addiction, but if you read them in the sense of it being about a criminal, whom Ranpo is about to catch, it makes more sense. I am sorry I can’t provide a better song for him right now djhfksjlhdfujhhgkfc
Am I wasting my breath on you / Feels like my words are never getting through, yeah / I never said I hate you to someone so much before / I'm light headed when we talk and then you shut the door, god damn / Like what are we still talking for, yeah /
I really hope you don’t see tomorrow  / I tried to play nice with you / 'Cause all you ever do is try to fuck up my day / And you were successful / (But I know the truth) / No you don't have anything better to do / Everything you ever loved has tried to escape you / So why would I want anything to do with you /
Fuck you /
Don’t lie, he would blast this at full volume when Dazai fucks up his schedule again HAHAHA (I love their dynamic)
💙 Waiting by Zhavia Ward 💙
The truth is you don't even / Know what the hell you believe / But you should believe / Lions don't lose sleep / Over the opinions of sheep /
So if you're waitin' / To watch me fall / Watch me fall / Watch me fall / I'ma keep you waitin' / To watch me fall / Watch me fall / Watch me fall / I'ma keep you waitin' /
Empire State kinda view / And I'm up here with the crew / I got the feelin' that you wishin' / You could be up here too / Maybe I should feel bad for you / Be a little sentimental / But I don't, no I won't / Make excuses for you to hide behind /
This one makes me think of the time Fyodor tried to break him mentally by making that little girl sacrifice herself (Season 3), but he got back up pretty quickly again after having his ideals get shaken like that.
💙 S.C.A.V.A. by Hollywood Undead 💙
Here's the massacre, a mausoleum fit for me / Lived a hundred years, a hundred years I didn't see / Gave all my hope away, isn't any left for me? / Bombs are splitting atoms, what can the future bring? / We can fill a million choirs and wait till children sing / We can walk a million miles and end up in the sea / And our lungs just keep filling and lying when we breathe / The world's filled with liars, liars like me / And I look at my child, it's finite, this feeling / Eyes blue like the sky, I see all of this meaning / I reach up to God and I ask if I'm dreaming […] /
Everybody says greetings and goodbyes / Everybody pays, no one knows the price / We know the price of sin, the sin of sacrifice / I know I'll sin again, but who can save me twice? / How much can we ask? You'll get the answer first / How much can we kneel with the air that chills the earth? / The air keeps getting colder, my knees keep hitting dirt / The innocent can cry without the guilty getting hurt / You ask who you love and you don't know, no, do you? / The spirit of God just passes right through you / You gave away heaven, handed right to you / And I can see it all, tell me, is it true? /
Fukuzawa is that anime character that’s visibly been through a lot of shit (and has done a lot of shit as well, even morally grey or black), which could be why he’s so stern and not a man of many words. Marked by life, if you will. He also gives off a very “wise man” kinda vibe right from the beginning, so I think that this song somewhat fits him because it is wondering about the state of the world and human nature.
💙 Courtesy Call by Thousand Foot Krutch 💙
This is your last warning / A courtesy call / I am not afraid / Of the storm that comes my way / When it hits it shakes me to the core / And makes me stronger than before / It’s not a question about trust / But will you stand with us? […] /
There’s a rumble in the floor / So get prepared for war / When it hits it’ll knock you to the ground / When it shakes up everything around / But survivial is a must / So will you stand with us? /
This song just has that badass vibe. And no one can deny that Fukuzawa has a badass and intimidating vibe as well as he seems so stern and stoic most of the time.
I don't have lots of cash / But enough for me to buy you an ice cream / For us to go on a walk / And for you to whisper to me in the waves of the ocean / I've taken some days from the border / And I put some behind the door, on ice / For cloudy weather / So that we can have them when the movie of life passes […] /
Let me be your lifeline / When your world is in the process of demolition / Let your dreams fly / I promise, we'll catch them somewhere around the sun /
Oddly enough, the Tanizaki siblings were just as hard for me as Ranpo… There aren’t really that many songs that would make me think of them. But this Romanian one made me (partly) think of him, I also think it’s cute and would probably fit him lol Especially the last four lines make me think of him and Naomi. After all, he’d even burn down the whole world if it was for her sake. All in all, this just sounds like him in the sense of a really supporting person/friend/brother.
💙 You Should See Me In A Crown by Billie Eilish 💙
You say, "Come over, baby / I think you're pretty" / I'm okay, I'm not your baby / If you think I'm pretty /
You should see me in a crown / I'm gonna run this nothing town / Watch me make 'em bow / One by one by one / One by one by / You should see me in a crown / Your silence is my favorite sound / Watch me make 'em bow / One by one by one / One by one by one /
Naomi isn’t giving me the same “badass bitch” vibe as Yosano does, but she does have that “badass princess” vibe. Is that making any kind of sense? Like, she does not have an ability, but she is neither dumb nor completely helpless in all situations. So, there is a slight badass vibe, but not the “I can and I. W i l l . Kick your stupid. Bitch. Ass.” – so a…. “badass princess”? Because she also has that elegant aura about her. I hope I am making sense…?
We know that you are happy right now / That you're slaying right now / You have all what you deserve / And we are so damn proud / But you're people, like us / You have spars, you get hurt / You get tired of the pressure / You get tired of the rush / God, thank you so much! / For giving us the chance / To tell you that we're here for you / And this will never change /
Lay on us / When dark times come and surround you / Our light will help you to get through / Our love is gonna heal you / Lay on us / The ones who would go to space to / Steal some stars just to give you 'cause it would make you feel good / We're gonna stay with you forever, until the end / We swear that we're not going anywhere / Yeah we're not going anywhere / We know the road can be so tough / But with holding hands / Together we take a nice deep breath /
Haruno strikes me as the kind of person, who’d be a really supportive friend, so I thought this might fit her. I have not seen much of her and her character neither in the anime nor in the manga yet, so I don’t really know whether this is any good or if it does her any justice.
On the other hand, I feel this song would also fit the Tanizaki siblings well.
💙 Puste sie weg (blow them away) by Kontra K 💙
Love in the air – blow it away / 9mm on the chest – then blow it away / 3g on the mirror – better blow it away / And the wind will do the rest / Hate in the air – blow it away / Pressure on the chest again – then blow it away / Seven sins in my head – better blow it away / And the wind will do the rest […] /
Because everyone’s talking, talking, talking too much / But unfortunately never do it, do it, do it / And I don’t hate, hate, hate the player / But I’d rather kill a whole team by myself /
I’d rather have three, four warriors than one thousand “brothers” / I’d rather pick up cents from the ground than break bread with liars / I’d rather be broke like I used to be than be a part time dealer / I’d rather have a heart of gold than sharing with no one at all (no one) /
Hatred in the air – blow it away / Pressure on the chest again – then blow it away / Seven sins in my head – better blow it away / And the wind will do the rest /
Take the lyrics quite literally, “blow them away”. The feeling of this song fits him, I think, because of his sheer strength. He just blows away hatred, malice, etc. and is unaffected by any of it as his heart and his head stay innocent and pure, even if naive.
I have to say though, it can be a pun, especially the part of “9mm (gun) on the chest” would be most obvious for it (especially considering that the “on the chest” part does not specify in German whether it’s your own chest or you are holding a gun to someone’s else’s chest lol). In general “puste xy weg” means to blow it away with the air out of your mouth, but colloquially it can also mean gunning down something or someone. And if you apply that meaning to every single line with “blow it away”, the meaning turns around from not letting it bother you to killing it, which I find interesting with this character. (Because he definitely has great potential to actually kill someone with his ability alone.) Though what I thought when I heard this song was that it might fit him with the meaning of him letting nothing bother him.
💙 Alaska by Elif 💙
Sometimes I’m thinking, I’m going insane like everyone else / They said I’d be going nuts and yeah, I’m starting to believe them / -7°C, I’m walking through the city park by myself / The down jacket is keeping me warm, but in my heart, there’s Alaska /
I don’t know what love is / No matter how much of it I get, I need more of it / It’s tearing me apart on the inside / When I, once again, don’t know where I’ll be getting it from / Even my therapist says, he doesn’t know any further / My dark side, it’s stronger than the good one / My youth was poisened, the future is uncertain / It is how it is yeah, it is how it is /
💙 Godsent by Smash Into Pieces 💙
I used to share, I used to care / The good in me is gone I'm bad / I used to give, I used to feel / The things you did will never heal / Take a look at me now / See what I've become / I will no longer feed the machine / Can't control the monster in me, no / The way that I feel / Makes it harder to breathe / When I'm thinking about you / The monster is real /
This makes me think of her in the Port Mafia.
💙 Boomerang by Smash Into Pieces 💙
I've been gone for a while now / But only to gain my power / I've been fighting my demons / And I'm back up on my feet (and now) / The harder you fall down / The stronger you come back later / Now I feel like an army / And I've only just begun /
This one in turn makes me think of her in the Agency.
💙 Circles (제자리) by G.Soul 💙
Oh, we know the ending / No matter how you escape / Here again / Always come back to me / Back again / Eventually / Here again / Why is it so hard to leave? / Here again / We always stay here […] / Answer me, I don’t know, no / Just don’t know / You’re getting stuck / Forever / Oh, we know the ending / No matter how you escape / Here again /
This makes me think of what Kouyou (I hope I am remembering her name correctly) was saying about her as a flower of darkness, as she was kind of turning in circles (no pun intended)–between wanting to be in the light and “accepting” that she only belongs into the darkness–at the beginning before she finally joined the Agency.
💙 Excuses (변명) by G.Soul 💙
I told you not to be too good to me / That it would make it too hard on you / No matter what you say now / I don’t hear a word of it […] / Even though I may be making a mistake / Even though I may regret this as time goes on / Baby, I think that we should just end it here now /
Even though the song in total has a different vibe (and story lmao), these parts of the lyrics makes me think of Kyouka telling Atsushi that there is no saving her, and that the light is no place for her (directly after saving her from the Port Mafia). It kinda makes me think of the part, specifically, where Atsushi suggests going on a “date” and at the end of it, Kyouka wants the last place they go to to be the police station.
💙 Sing To Me by Missio 💙
Somehow I got nominated as a king of sadness / Got so much I know that I could even feed the birds / And that's why / I prayed, I prayed, God sent me right to voicemail / It's like, all day my vanity is for sale / Take it away, my head is in my own hell /
Sing to me, I am not doing well / Getting tired of my own words / Sing to me 'cause I can't hear myself / Through the loudness of my own hurts / Call me selfish when I say this, say this / I'm kinda helpless, and I need you / Sing to me 'cause I'm not doing well /
Somebody told me that there's two sides to this life / I think I might've chosen darkness over light /
These two are two sides of the same coin, but no side is brighter than the other. I feel like they are kind of mirroring each other in the way they feel about themselves, which is why these lyrics mirror both of them towards each other as both are in need of salvation as they’re drowning in their own minds. Dazai is just better at hiding it from Atsushi.
💙 Namae wo yobu yo (Call A Name) by Luck Life (Season 1 Ending) 💙
I was searching / For the reason I’m able to remain as myself / If there’s a version of me / That exists within your heart / That even amid the darkness on this long, hilly road / I feel I can become a new me / Able to make my way through / So that each of us, walking our individual moments, can keep on smiling / So that we can keep moving forward, exploring the meaning of life together / I’ll call out a name / Your name / So that you can remain who you are /
Technically, lyrically it’s the entirety of the song, but I will not write down all of it lmao And it’s the Atsushi and Dazai parallels here again. It’s not just the ending with the animation that shows it for me, but the lyrics reflect both of them in them as well. I absolutely loved this ending. I never ship characters as I do not care about that, but I really love these two (separately)~ (What they mean for each other aka what they might mean for each other in the future [peace of mind/finding worth for Atsushi, and a reason to live for Dazai, etc.], how they’re already helping each other [Dazai helping Atsushi with feeling worthless, and Dazai finding a bit of piece of mind], etc. etc. etc.) I haven’t loved 2 characters in an anime as much as this in quite a long time (The last time was Kougami and Akane in Psycho Pass) as I find making up characters as complex as them and make them fit together as well as them/make them complement each other/balance each other out is actually pretty hard to do really well.
.
Making up this list took waaaaay longer than it should’ve. (I did not include Katai because I couldn’t think of a single song for him, sorry.)
Mistakes that Make and Break.
Fandom: Harry Potter, Marauders Era
Pairing: Remus Lupin x Reader
Warnings: Mature themes?? Nothing major. Angst and immense fluffy sweetness.
Request: Remus doesn't know he has a 7th-year daughter until he teaches her?
Word Count: 4.4 k
A/N: Timelines and ages don't really make sense but let's bend the rules ok, this is the land of pretend. Also, I'm changing the year to 3 instead of 7 :))) This has been sitting in my WIP’s folder so I guess I should just post it lol.
Tumblr media
Remus Lupin is not an easy man to find. After his friends died he sort of went into isolation, he wouldn't see anyone not even you.
You weren't even sure if he remembered what had happened, if he didn't care, or was purposefully avoiding you.
It was the night of Halloween, the same night Lily and James were killed. Maybe he blamed you and that's why he ignored you for that first while and then became totally unreachable for years.
But that night, seemed a blur, a tragic terrible and happy accident all rolled into one. You were at their Halloween party, you got drunk, told too many truths, lost your ability to stop yourself from staring at Remus the way you were. He was drunk, so were you, both dumb virgins, or so you thought, you weren't too sure anymore if he had lied.
He took you to his house, it was small and poorly but you didn't care in the slightest, he would usually be ashamed but he was too drunk to care and you were taking off your clothes in his bedroom so he was purely focused on that. He was all clumsy hands and toothy grins, messy curls in his face and too drunk to even care about you seeing his scars. He was considerate and sweet and funny and he filled you with so much hope with every sweet compliment he whispered in your ear.
You fell asleep shortly after, both drunk and tired, when you woke up Remus was gone and you had lunch plans with Lily so you had to go home and change, you were so excited to gush to her about Remus. You worried that it was weird that he left you alone in his house, but maybe he had somewhere important to be.
It wasn't until you apparated home that you heard the news, so many of the people you saw the night before were now dead, Lily, James and Peter, and Sirius was behind it all. You remembered taking shots with him that night, a sour taste fills your mouth and you quickly ran to the bathroom just in time.
It was easy to blame it on the drinking, the loss and sadness you were facing, that's why you felt so sick, for over a week. Then you blamed it on heartbreak when Remus kept ignoring you, avoiding you. You felt so alone, unwanted. When your period never came the following week you sort of saw it coming. It was like life was trying to make this horrible loss of your friends even worse. Making you pregnant by a man who won’t even acknowledge your existence or what happened between you. Your best friend was dead and you couldn't confide in her for help or advice.
You were alone, 9 months later your daughter was born and then you didn't feel so lonely anymore. You sent an owl out for Remus every month for the first few years, but you had no idea where he really was so they kept coming back.
You still thought about him all the time, the way he left you, broke you. You still hoped one-day he’d come back, that he wasn't dead somewhere waiting to be found.
Raising your daughter all alone was hard, you had your parents to help you but for most things, you were on your own. It became much harder when you found out your daughter had a specific gene passed down to her, one you didn't even know Remus had and one you had no experience with. When you found out you felt like nothing could get any worse, you didn't want to report your daughter to the ministry, you wanted her to live a free and happy life as best she could. You bought wolfsbane potion each month and even confided in the last person you wanted to talk to.
You wrote a letter to Sirius Black, you started by saying that you had no desire to talk to him, to know how he is or to hear his excuses but that you needed help. You told him what happened between you and Remus, about your daughter, and ever so secretly about her “unruly attitude” that was exactly like Remus “problem” and asked him how he dealt with that in the past, or if he even knew enough to understand what you were really talking about behind these codewords.
Sirius was quick to write back, somehow he was easier to reach in Azkaban than Remus was, where ever he might be, Sirius told you every trick he learned over the years to helping Remus and they all helped magnificently, the tips and tricks, the chocolate. When she was young she was easy to control but as she got older she became stronger, you loathed sending her away to Hogwarts when the day finally came. After making plans with Dumbledore, thanking him profusely for everything you mind was a little calmer.
Everything was going fine, as smoothly as possible until your daughter's third year. Even though you cried back in the first year when she told you she finally met Harry potter and he was so cool and nice and she definitely didn't have a crush on him. You told her all about him as a baby, his parents and the memories, but made sure to leave Remus out of them until she was older at least.
You had named your daughter Hope, after Remus’ mother, you had no idea what else to name her and you hoped that if he ever found out about her, this would make him want to meet her more, love her more somehow.
-
Hope couldn't help her crush on Harry, so when she saw him walking towards the Defence against the Dark arts classroom she walked up beside him.
“Hey, Harry!” She said excitedly, she wanted to tell him everything you told her this summer about his parents and him. “Hi Hope, how are you?” He asked, though his mind seemed to be somewhere else.
“Good, have a good summer, Harry?” She asked sweetly.
“Not particularly,” he answers and then stops right in front of the dark arts classroom, Lupin is standing inside, watching from his desk as the two students interact at his door.
“Oh, I'm sorry.”
“Not your fault,” he answers quickly, “I have to go talk to Professor Lupin if you don’t mind,” he says and walks into the classroom.
“If you want me to cheer you up, my mum told me more stories about you, when you were a baby and about your parents,” she says and Remus wasn't really listening to their conversation until then, his head perks up.
“Maybe later, I've just-” Harry tries to make up an excuse but Remus is interested in what the young girl has to say.
“No rush Harry, there is time for a story. I’d like to hear it too,” he says and gestures for the girl to come over to his desk.
Something about her face is too familiar, though he knows he's never seen her before, she has a few faint scars on her cheek and forehead, brown messy hair, she’s lanky but still shorter than Harry.
“Hello, Mr. Lupin.” She says timidly, and he smiles at her, “I'm Hope.”
He nods his head as for her to continue and she does right away very excited.
“My mum says she was there when you were born and you were really tiny, so tiny that your dad was scared to hold you. And she says your dad was a really good Quiddich player, but you probably knew that because you're really good too. She says your dad once threw a quaffle and hit her right in the face and it was really funny because he felt really bad.”
The pieces started to fall together for him, clicking in his mind. The more she talked the more it clicked into place.
“Hope, who exactly is your mother,” he asks, as though he doesn't want to believe it.
“Uhm her name is Y/n Y/l/n, why Mr. Lupin?” She asks, completely unknowing.
“She is your mother?” He asks again as though he can't believe it.
“You knew her too, I mean if she knew my parents, and you knew my parents it makes sense?” Harry questions.
“I... I did,” he admits and he looks white as a ghost, both kids stare at him, wondering why he is acting so strange.
He is racking his brain, he hadn't seen you since that night at his place, when he left you there, the way he avoided you and ignored you. He tried to do the math in his head but his brain wasn’t working, who the hell could this girls father have been, he couldn't picture you being with anyone, for as long as he knew you, you only had a crush on him and then he ruined it. Did you move on that quickly? He shouldn't ask, it’s improper to but he can't help himself.
“Hope, dear may I ask who your father is?” Remus asks quietly and Harry is beyond confused at this entire interaction.
Her face goes pale, her bottom lip goes in between her teeth as she bites hard, her eyes travel between Remus and Harry before she quietly mumbles, “I don't know, sir.” and hearing those words makes his heart stops.
He stares at her for a moment, she has his messy hair, the same damned nose, similar scars decorating her face and he feels like throwing up. His head is spinning and he doesn't know what he is going to do. “Very well,” he manages to say. “Uhm Harry I'm rather sorry but I’ll have to talk to you later I have a lot of papers to grade, so if you don't mind,” he says and points a shaky hand towards the door.
“Okay,” Harry says and Hope follows him out the door like a puppy, they quickly fall into a much more normal conversation.
He isn't sure what to do with himself. He suddenly is filled with regret and self-hatred. He left you the way he did, with no explanation, he wasn't there for you after he lied to you, made you think that he wanted you, which he did but then everything changed. He ignored you, he thought you were just in love with him or something, feelings he couldn't process but in reality, you were simply just trying to tell him that you were pregnant. He left you alone to deal with the grief of such a great loss and then alone to raise your child. He missed out on so much of her life, he wasn't sure she would even want him anymore.
Then he remembered the scars and it hits him. Not only did he have a child he didn't know about but he had also passed down lycanthropy to her, he left you alone to deal with a child that had the rotten luck of getting his stupid gene. You who didn’t even know Remus was a werewolf, who didn’t know what you were signing up for with one stupid mistake of one night.
His heart felt as though it was snapping into a million pieces, her little happy smile replayed in his mind, the way she looked up at Harry like she admired him so much made his heart hurt too, the way she talked about her mom, talked about you.
-
You hadn't known Remus had been teaching at Hogwarts, your daughter wasn't assigned to his class and you didn't often read a list of the entire faculty of Hogwarts in your spare time. When your daughter started at Hogwarts you moved to the village of Hogsmead, this meant your daughter was never too far if she needed you, and you could easily visit her with the help of Dumbledore.
Tomorrow was the first Hogsmead visit of the year, your daughter would always come by the house with her friends and you had baked cookies expecting their arrival the next day.
-
Remus, after throwing up three times, and drowning in self-pity and regret, made his way to Dumbledores office keeping his head down to hide his sickly face and red eyes.
Dumbledore let him in quickly, with a knowing look on his face.
“You knew didn't you?” Remus said, not angry-sounding just looking for answers.
“Knew what Professor Lupin?”
“You knew I had a daughter, you knew she was here and you didn't tell me.”
“It was not my place to intrude. I knew you had a daughter, yes, but I only knew so much as Y/n told me.”
“What did she tell you? I haven't seen her in years since James and Lily died. I had no idea.”
“She came to me when Hope was starting her first year, she told me she hadn't seen you in years, couldn't get ahold of you no matter how hard she tried. She said she resorted to writing to Sirius for advice, and Sirius had told her to come to me for help just as I helped you when you started at Hogwarts.”
“She went to Sirius for help? How could she?”
“She didn't have another option, everyone she knew was dead and she couldn't find you.”
“I didn't know,” Remus says more to reassure himself.
“It wasn't my place to tell you about a child you had no idea about, I didn't know why you were avoiding her.”
“That's what you were hinting at, back at the beginning of this year wasn’t it.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you just meant Harry when you mentioned an “interesting student”, I didn't know. And she's like me and, I feel so guilty I don't even know how to tell Y/n, how to apologize I'm scared she will hate me.”
“There is a trip to Hogsmeade tomorrow.” Dumbledore states.
“And?” Remus asks confused.
“She moved there when Hope started school, so she could be closer. As far as I know, she never moved on. And she is one of the kindest people I've ever met, more forgiving than most. Be honest with her, I'm sure she will listen but don't tell Hope anything until you have spoken to Y/n, it's her decision if you get to be a bigger part of Hope’s life.”
“Okay, you’re right,” Remus says as he nods his head thinking deeply, “thank you.”
“Oh and Remus, “ Dumbledore starts and Remus stops walking and turns back, “I’d keep an eye on Potter.”
“You think I'm going to just forget about him because of all of this?” Remus asks, offended.
“Not at all, I was merely telling you to keep an eye out for Harry and Hope, she seems to have as some would say, a schoolgirl crush.”
“Oh, Merlin,” Remus curses as he walks out the door, head in his hands.
Remus goes to his room, he showers, nerves filling every inch of his skin until he resorts to sitting on the bottom of the tub and letting the hot water turned cold fall on his head, it isn't long until the water is mixed with salty tears. He is overcome with fear and shame and he brings his knees to his chest, hiding his face as he cries and cries, ribs shaking as he squeezes his arms leaving crescent moon marks in his fingers wake.
He tries to sleep but he can't, he feels so bad about Hope, about abandoning her for all these years, about abandoning you and he is so scared to face you.
-
When the time to leave for Hogsmeade comes around he tries to avoid everyone, not wanting to be asked why he suddenly has an interest in travelling to the small village.
The ride seems longer than usual and Remus pulls his thick sweater over his hands to keep them warm. He goes to the house Dumbledore directed him to and stands for a good five minutes at the front door before knocking, he wants to make sure he gets there before Hope does.
You have the cookies ready and you’re surprised to hear the door so early but excited to see your daughter none the less. When you open the door the last person you expect to see is standing there looking like a scared child.
“Y/n,” he says like the word is foreign in his mouth.
You take a step forward and then slap him across his face, not as hard as you could but hard enough to sting his skin. It’s easier to be mad at him, it’s the only emotion you can process right now. You don't want to feel the hurt, the sadness, the love you have deep down for him, the pain of being left behind and forgotten.
“How dare you,” you say, voice weak and lip quivering.
“Y/n please let me explain myself, I never meant to hurt you.”
“Hurt me? You have done more than hurt me.”
“I didn't know!” He whines, keeping his distance from you.
“You didn't know? Yes, you are right, you didn't know that you got me pregnant, you didn’t know you had a daughter, you’re right Remus. But you did know that I had a crush on you, that I had never been with anybody else, you knew I would have been alone after our friends died, you knowingly let me grieve for them all alone, you knew I was alive somewhere and you never once tried to find me, even just to be a friend. You may be innocent in some ways but in others, you’re not, and how can I forgive you for that without losing all of my self-worth.”
He sighs deeply, feeling defeated. ‘I know, I know I fucked up and I don't know if I can fix it or what to do but I found out you were here and even if you just stand there and tell me you hate me, I had to come to see you.”
The sadness in his voice breaks your heart a little, and you don't want to feel bad for him, but you also don't want your neighbours seeing you yelling at some man outside so you turn abruptly walking inside and leaving the door open. He hesitantly comes inside.
There are pictures of Hope on the walls, her artwork. There are pictures of James and Lily, ones with Peter and even Sirius is in the back of one but none of Remus.
“You never told her.”
“I was hoping you would come back and tell her yourself.”
“I’d like to. If you will let me.”
“Of course I will, just because I lost you, just because you don't want me doesn't mean that she doesn't deserve you in her life.”
“Don’t say it like that. Like I left because I didn’t want you.”
“What else am I supposed to think?” You yell loudly, scaring yourself as you sit down, gesturing to the opposite couch for him to sit on.
“I planned to stay that morning, I told myself that if you hadn’t left when I woke up that we would eat breakfast and I would tell you how I felt and even tell you about the worst parts of me, but I didn’t get the chance, I woke up and instantly found out the news, I ran out the door, I panicked I had to get out of there, do something. I hadn’t even thought about you at that moment and I'm sorry.”
You had no words to say to him other than words of forgiveness so easily threatening to spill from your sorry pathetic lips, it was so easy to forgive him and you didn't want to just yet so you stayed silent, letting him continue talking.
“After James and Lily died I didn't know what to do, I went into a dark place and hid away from everybody, you were never supposed to be a casualty, Hope was never supposed to be one either I just didn't know, I never in my wildest dreams could have thought of that happening. I had never been with anybody else I didn't know what I was doing.”
“I thought you lied about that part.” You admit and he frowns deeper.
“Why would I lie about that?” He asks, clearly offended.
“I don't know, to get me to sleep with you.”
“Oh because that's such an appealing trait, Y/n please fuck me I'm a dumb clueless virgin. Works on all the girls really.”
“Stop it!” You yell as you hide your face, “Don't make me laugh I'm mad at you.”
“I'm just being honest here,” he says as he stares at your face the trace of a smile gone after a second. “Y/n you are the only girl I have ever even thought about being with, the only girl I've ever had feelings for and I felt so worthless without my friends, I was sure there was no way you actually wanted me so I ran.”
“Oh, so when I slept with you that made it very clear that I didn't want you, when I was so obviously crushing on you for years that was a key indicator that I wanted nothing to do with you! All you do is make me feel like an absolute fool Remus! You left me for years, no letters, no calls and I still want you.” You admit and instantly regret it.
“You don't hate me?” He asks standing up and quickly trying to move closer to you.
“I hate that I don't hate you, I hate what you did but I have so much faith in you, that you can fix this.”
“Please, please let me try I’ll do everything I can do. Just give me the chance to fix this, to fix this relationship we never got a chance to try and also to fix things with Hope, I just need one chance I won’t mess it up,” he pleads with you as tears fill his eyes and it breaks your heart to see him begging you, you never imagined him coming back would be like this. And you're weak for him, oh so weak and you just want to hold him again, so you wrap your arms around him and pull him close hugging him tightly.
“Okay,” you whisper and by the time you release him from the hug you hear the door open. Four kids barge into the house and freeze when they see who is there.
“Mum? What is Mr. Lupin doing here?”
“It’s Professor Lupin, Hope. Not Mr.” Hermione corrects her and Ron and Harry just stand there confused.
“Uhm Hope, I need to talk to you, can your friends go back to the village and I'll walk you back over thereafter?” You ask her but she looks confused and she’s stubborn so she won’t let it go that easily.
“No, tell me what Mr. Lupin’s doing here!”
“Professor,” Hermione whispers and Hope glares at her, now not being the time to be corrected.
“I'm not really sure how to say this but-” You pause and Hermione's brain is working so fast that she realizes it before anyone else and interrupts you.
“Professor Lupin is your dad, isn’t he?”
“What no?” Hope argues, “I don't know who my dad is.”
“I never told you because I hoped one day he could tell you himself, I was honest when I said I hadn't seen him in years, that I couldn’t find him, I never imagined he would become a professor at Hogwarts. I never meant for it to be like this.” You try to explain, lost for words at the entire bizarre situation.
“I don’t believe this. You are missing for years, my whole life and then just like that you come back? That’s not fair.” She says crossing her arms. Her friends stand behind her, ready to do whatever she asks of them, whether it be staying and having her back or leaving her alone.
“Hope you can’t begin to understand how sorry I am, how much I will regret my past for the rest of my life, if I had known you existed I would have been here. I wasn't trying to hide from you or run away, I didn’t know.”
“One simple excuse doesn't make up for years of absence!” She yells and Hermione holds her arm, a soft comfort.
“I'm aware of that, but if you’ll let me I’d like to make it up to you,” he offers.
“What about my mum, you left her alone, regardless of whether I existed or not, how can I forgive you for doing that to her.”
“Hope, that's something me and your father will have to work out, you don't need to worry about that, I promise you if I didn't want him in your life and if I didn't trust him he wouldn't be here.”
“So just because you trust him, I'm supposed to too?”
“No honey, of course not, it will take a lot of time to become a normal family, It takes time to build love and trust I know that. Why don't you guys come in, eat some cookies and tell me about how your classes are going.” You offer the kids and as much as Ron wants homemade cookies, he waits with the others for you to decide.
“Okay,” Hope says finally agreeing to work on this. She walks over and grabs two cookies, shoving them in her mouth and taking a seat right beside Remus. Its something he doesn't expect and he freezes a little, you can tell he doesn't know what to do, he doesn't know how to be a father. You grab his hand to reassure him.
“I guess I’ll be in your class next semester.” She mumbles as crumbs of cookie tumble from her mouth.
“I’ll be sure not to play favourites then.” he teases as he too takes a cookie before Ron and Harry eat all of them.
“No!” She yells playfully, “you better play favourites that's the whole point!”
“Noted,” Remus says with a smile and your heart feels so full, seeing them interact, having him back in your life no matter what type of relationship it ends up being you’re just grateful he's here and he is okay.
(Y/N)'s POV
My choice was obvious.
Irene sent people to bring my car and all the things from my apartment, except for my papers about the case and my old phone since it was harder to hide in a car and it was dangerous to just leave those there.
I didn't say a word to her, I just went in and drove without a destination. Going back to the streets, my biggest fear in life was now my reality.
Everything vanished so quickly. Just a month ago I was helping a mother find her lost daughter and hugging her back when she was crying and thanking me for finding her. I felt so blessed for having a job that allowed me help people and I was thanking above for not being in hell anymore, just a few days ago I was in a planetarium with a man I barely knew talking about life and laughing and unexpectedly kissing him when he left me at my door, just two days ago I was feeling free and alive running in the rain and having sex with San enjoying myself but also admiring him while he was asleep and having all sort of unknown feelings when I was in his arms. Just a few hours ago I was laughing with a friend. But now there's nothing. Time felt so absurd.
I wanted to call San and confront him. He's the one who killed that man, this was all his fault but I lost the tiny paper with his phone on it. I drove for a few hours and then stopped a few blocks away from the bar since it was the only place I knew. I could only sobb. This is not real I kept repeating myself but looking at my surroundings and looking at my reflection in the driver's mirror, this was definitely real. My eyes were swollen and my head was hurting from crying so much I closed my eyes but did not sleep. I tried to clear up just how I felt but I cried to the point where there was not a single thought on my head.
I kept on working at the bar since the FBI cut the money they were giving me per week, the bar was the only thing that could help me to survive. But I looked like shit and nobody wanted to at least invite me drinks. I went to work every day hoping to see San I wanted to yell at him so bad but I didn't see him, two weeks passed and he was nowhere to be seen, I would constantly see Wooyoung and I wanted to approach him and ask him why San wasn't around but every time I tried to my legs would stop working and I'd walk away from him. Weeks passed and nothing I even started to worry what if something happened to him, what if he was just playing around and he just wanted sex those words were running in circles in my head I didn't even wanted to yell at him anymore I just wanted to see him again.
I wished I had spent more time with him and also wished I could remember the way to his home. I really needed to know where or how he was.
The only good thing about that bar was that I made a new friend, I grew closer with Lucy, she displayed a totally different image while working, the real Lucy was a bubbly and cheerful girl. Everyday she'd ask me if everything was okay in her words, you look like a puzzle that's missing a piece and I always lied with the same words what are you talking about I'm fine.
Since we couldn't meet each other at my ex apartment anymore Irene occasionally left different codes with secret messages on sticky notes on my car that at first glance looked like traffic tickets and it was always the same thing.
"Have you heard of him?"
"You're screwing up"
"If you don't get him soon we can sue you for breach of contract"
"Stop fooling around"
It was definitely way better than seeing her and yell at each other until getting tired.
A whole month passed, at the bar I was used to at least seeing Wooyoung around but recently not even him was showing up.
What if this what if that.
I just need to see him.
(San's POV)
The smell of smoke filled the house, the place was under attack and we needed to get out of here. There was only one man dumb enough to mess with me. That son of a bitch.
I ran through the long corridors of Hongjoong's house. The others following me closely as I lead the way I knew this place wasn't safe but he never hears what I say. I heard the others running behind me and Hongjoong clearing the back part as I cleared the front part. We couldn't use the front door since it was burning and falling apart, we needed a plan asap.
"Let's just use the window" Said Jongho.
I stopped to think about it for a moment, it's risky but we don't really have more options. Jumping to the balcony of the second floor and then to the trees is our only way out. I explained to them my plan and they agreed.
"I'll go first" I said as I made my way to the window. This was a huge risk one wrong move and it was over. Before jumping my princess and my loyal members crossed my mind.
I crouched into the window sill. Please let the others be safe. I jumped and I successfully made it to the second floor's balcony. I looked over at the tree that was about 3 feet away from the balcony, this was the serious part. But we didn't have much time and without hesitation I jumped, I managed to grab onto a branch. I climbed down and then jumped to the ground. I got only a few scratches on my face and my arms but nothing serious or painful.
While helping Yeosang who was the last I heard footsteps approaching us. We got on guard but the noise ceased. Yunho was the first one to lower his gun "Let's just go get the…" I heard gunshots and then Yunho fell on my arms, his face filled with pain and his back covered in blood.
"Lucca says hi" A man hiding in the bushes yelled.
"Go get that bitch but don't kill him I want to do it myself" I said as Jongho, Wooyoung and Mingi followed my instructions.
My attention was back to Yunho, the blood he was losing worried me we could lose him any second if we don't treat him on time, Seonghwa helped me to get him inside the car. We could've died as soon as we passed in front of Hongjoong's house but to our surprise there wasn't anyone there shooting or throwing Molotov cocktails anymore. The way home felt like a roller-coaster I'd see Yunho through the rear-view mirror every two minutes, Hongjoong kept talking to him to keep him awake and Yunho tried to answer all of it with his head thrown back in pain, my heart was beating faster and faster. I can't lose him, none of them I just can't.
I stopped the car in front of our house and Yeosang and Seonghwa got him carefully to the infirmary to treat his wounds. I felt useless, I'm their leader, I should protect all of them but this is not even the first time one of us gets hurt. I impatiently waited outside the infirmary for a few hours to get news from Yunho, why is this taking them so long?.
"I know that face" Hongjoong who was sitting in front of me said with his hands buried on his pockets "You're blaming yourself but this is not your fault, you always tell me to move in here but I never listen, blame me instead"
I didn't say anything this wasn't because Hongjoong's place was an easy target this was because I was unable to protect Yunho. The front door opened and I felt the weight on my shoulders vanishing a little they came back in one piece.
"You're gonna get mad" Said Wooyoung. "We got the guy but he's injured losing a lot of blood he could die any second, we already moved him to the basement so you better hurry"
"Did you ask him some questions?" Hongjoong interfered and Wooyoung tilted his head and squinted his eyes as I left them to hurry to the basement.
"We tried but that motherfucker didn't want to cooperate" I heard Mingi reply.
I went down the basement, Jongho was there too. That man didn't even need to be tied up, he was all fucked up and could barely move, I dragged a chair and sat in front of him.
"So you're one of Lucca's little toys?" I said but that bastard didn't even look at me, Jongho pulled his head up by his hair. "I'm talking, if you don't wanna die in a merciless way you better pay attention–"
"Lucca… he's closer… than you think he is and–" Heavily breathing he coughed leaving blood on his lips, I observed how he was slowly dying. "He's also stronger than you… think he is, his goal is displaying your head… in his leaving room… That's all I know man" He crawled, trying to get closer to me "But please don't kill me I—"
I laughed, this bitch is funny as fuck "Don't kill me? You hurted one of my members, you can thank Lucca for this" I pulled out my gun and I shot him right between his eyebrows, he didn't hesitate to shoot Yunho why should I show some kind of mercy?
"You know what to do with the body" I glanced at Jongho and I threw him my zippo before closing the door of the basement.
While walking through the hall I spotted Seonghwa sitting on the floor removing his gloves covered in blood. He looked exhausted.
"Before you say anything, he's fine we just have to wait for him to wake up" He says while looking up to meet my eyes. "I know you're the leader, but you're also young, you don't have to beat up yourself for this we've been through worse we're all gonna be fine"
"Yes as you said I'm the leader and…" I felt embarrassed and I slid my back on the wall till I reached the floor sitting next to him.
He shakes his head "We knew what we were getting ourselves into when we joined you, and none of us regret doing it, so please stop worrying" He suddenly pauses and looks at me scanning me whole. "I'm the one worried about you, have you been sleeping well? You look like shit"
"I'm doing alright" I say.
"No you're not and I think I know what's your problem"
"Well Doctor Park tell me what's my problem" I rest my head on the wall crossed armed paying attention to what he has to say.
"It's that girl"
"I'm not gonna have this conversation with you" I try to get up but he holds my arm.
"You looked like a totally different person when you were seeing her, you had a special sparkle in your eyes I never saw that look in your face not even when you were with—"
"Don't fucking finish that" I push his hand away from my arm.
"Okay whatever I'm sorry I won't bring it up again, but you know I'm right" He says with determination "But why did you stop seeing her?"
"She rightfully got mad at me" Looking away I say. "I gave her my number but she never called"
"And why didn't you call her?" He scoffs
"She didn't call me for a reason and I respect that I can't force her to love me back" Seonghwa looks at me with his eyes wide open and his mouth forming an O.
"So you love her" I realize way too late what I just said. Fuck. "I knew it" He grabs me by the shoulders and shakes me.
"Well it's… The thing is… I don't know what I feel for her" I say quietly.
"You just said that you love her"
"I know what the fuck I just said it's just…" I try to find the right words but that's the thing about her, she leaves me speechless and breathless and I can't explain what my feelings are towards her. "It's complicated"
"One thing I know for sure is that she feels the same for you" I look at him ironically, I don't think that's the case but I keep listening "Don't look at me like that, I just know, when Wooyoung introduced her to me and I mentioned how nervous you were when you invited her dinner you should've seen her eyes and how they lightened up when I brought you up in our little convo, none a single person on earth can fake that"
"I've thought about it and it's better this way, my life is a big dangerous mess, I have people who's loyal to me in every corner of this city but I also have enemies in every corner, I don't want to bring her into my life and put her in danger just because I'm happy with her that'd be selfish, if something happened to her because of me…" I'm explaining but he interrupts me.
"Yeah but you don't get to decide that, it's her decision, I know she doesn't know everything about you but that one time when you first met her, you shot a man in front of her and according to what you said she didn't look remotely scared of you she even yelled at you she even agreed to go out with you" He sounds so enthusiastic about this but he suddenly pauses "You should go and see her"
"Right now?" I chuckle "I'm waiting for Yunho to wake up besides it's late she's probably working right now"
"Yunho is resting the more he sleeps the better" He rushes me to get up.
"What if she hates me"
"You respect her decision and come back here but you won't know if you don't try to see her" He's already pushing me to keep walking till we get to the door and even throws me my coat. "And yes I don't think he will but If Yunho wakes up earlier I'll call you right away"
"This is a bad idea" I try to get off this situation
"Just shut the fuck and go" He says while opening the door and pushes me out and before I get to say anything he slams the door.
Shit.
(Y/N POV)
I stared at my fake boss with pure anger disguised with a neutral expression, I truly want to punch him in the nose he's been yelling at me for an hour because I'm the only girl bringing the less money and I could understand that but he had the nerve to stare at my boobs the whole time I sat there in front of him in his office.
"I don't get rid of you just because even if you haven't brought that much money these last weeks you're the one who brought more money in one night this month" He finally looks me in the eyes.
He's talking about the night I met San when he paid for me to supposedly have sex with Wooyoung but it was actually just to get me out of here, after all the shit I went through that night he just wanted me to go home and that was a gesture I'll never forget.
"Are you paying attention?" He snaps his fingers in front of me and I nod "Besides tomorrow we have a special event and I need every single girl for a little something so please don't be late"
"Is that everything?" I ask as I get up from my seat, he just nods at me then makes a gesture with his hand.
While closing the door of the office I run into Lucy. "You're still here? it's almost 4am you always leave early" She tells me.
"I was about to leave when our boss called me to tell me about a special event" I explain while we both walk to the dressing rooms.
"Oh, yeah it's tomorrow it's not as special as it sounds it's just his brother's birthday, he's a creep a total pig and girl I see pigs every night but this man" She gags pretending to throw up "I would rather if you just stay at home"
"I can't he even told me to not be late" Lucy changes her dress for a clean one she usually stays for longer than I do, in the meantime I put on the hoodie that San lent me the last time I saw him on top of my dress and get ready to leave.
"Well I hope you get sick or something, I think you're too pure to meet that man" she says and I let out a loud laugh.
"Is he that bad?" She nods and the disgust on her face says everything.
"But enough of that even talking about him grosses me" She looks down at the hour on her phone "You should go now and get some sleep"
"I was going to wait a little the rain sounds heavy" I say and she just rolls her eyes and puts up my hoodie covering my head.
"That's even better if you get wet you might get sick"
I don't say anything, I just wave at her goodbye and leave to the parking lot. The rain catches me off guard, it's definitely more intense than I thought it was going to be. I run to the front part of the bar and on the corner of my eye I spot a familiar silhouette, but I keep walking, it's probably just my imagination at this point.
But what if…
I turn around and I see San he's walking to and fro like he is debating if he should get inside the bar or not. I freeze on my spot when our eyes meet each other, he's completely soaked for how long has he been waiting here in the rain?.
For the last month all I wanted was to have him in front of me so I could yell at him but now… I don't know a thing. I freeze even more when he starts walking toward me and my legs involuntarily do the same till we're face to face. He looks tired and his eyes look red and getting a little swollen… like he has been… crying. I suddenly get this overwhelming feeling and this enormous urge, I approach slowly to hug him tightly. My action takes him by surprise but fastly he wraps me with his arms as well resting his chin on my shoulder. I softly run my fingers through his hair as we get closer and closer.
I missed this…
"Why did you disappear?" I say in a whisper. I let go of our hold to make eye contact.
"I thought you didn't want to see me again" I shake my head slowly "You had all the right to get mad at me and… I'm sorry"
"I wanted to call you the next day you left me at my home but I lost your phone number" Then I finally remember why I wanted to see him "Actually something happened and we need to talk" He holds my hand and we walk to his car.
All this time all I wanted was to ask if he's the one who killed that man but after seeing his sincere eyes something deep inside of me tells me it wasn't him. But I still want to hear it from his lips.
"The last time I saw you… did you…" I struggle to get my words right.
"What is it princess?" He holds my hand with both of his leaving a tender kiss.
"The man you hit that day he's, he's dead" He closes his eyes and lets out a sigh.
"I know I gained certain fame with my actions towards men that have hurt you but this time I promise you princess it wasn't me" That's all I wanted to hear "That day as I was hitting him you told me to stop and so I did and after that you told me to leave and so I did. If you had asked me to kill him I would've done it but you didn't so I forgot about him" Then who the fuck killed that man?
"I'm sorry for thinking it was you" He caresses my cheek and gets closer to me.
"It's okay princess" He says in a lower tone, we're so close and I feel my heart racing so fast God I missed that feeling. I meet his eyes, that gaze… Fuck, then stare at his lips, I end the distance between us with a lingering kiss.
But he stops it "There's something I need to tell you too" He rests his forehead on my mine "I like you princess, so much you have no idea but…" He looks troubled and hesitating.
"You can tell me anything"
"If we keep going forward you deserve to know the truth" He holds my hands again "I'm a Mafia leader and I'm not gonna lie to you, it's dangerous being around me and I'll understand if you don't want to see me anymore"
San's words hit me like a truck, I got it, I did it, I gained his trust and got him to confess. But why do I feel like this doesn't matter anymore? Why do I feel even guilty about it?
"I don't know what to say to that"
"You just have to tell me if that scares you if it does I'll disappear from your life" I shook my head, it didn't scare me not even an ounce I've been around danger all my life "Are you sure?"
"I'm sure" I say while cupping his face with my hands and he rests on one and kisses my hand again.
The rain stops and I get an idea "Can I take you somewhere?" I say suddenly and he finally smiles.
"You want to drive?" I nod and we switch seats. "And where are you taking me?"
"You're gonna have to trust me"
