That’s technically not off the mark- except replace pets with livestock. There’s been a lot of news articles about how vets sign off / condone the unethical and unsanitary conditions of factory farming - and those vets who try to speak out against it find themselves blacklisted / subject to retaliation from their colleague

this is a very interesting topic but i was really just referring to dogs/how people have convinced themselves that vets who recommend kibble for dogs are evil and just want money

i do think the normalization and comfort surrounding factory farming in the animal industry is...horrifying to say the least. i've gotten the opportunity to be around a lot of people in said industry who see nothing wrong with the way large commercial farms are set up, all because it falls within animal welfare guidelines they created to be bare bones in the first place. its honestly sickening to see people boast their progress in animal welfare when i've seen first hand what they define as "welfare".

that's not to say some parts of it aren't improving - but like 90% of the industry is heavily resistant to seeing new opinions from young people who have the potential to change things for the better - a lot of which i can imagine are vets who want to do what they signed up for, helping animals.

overall small animal vets and large animal/livestock vets are like, entirely different areas of specialty and are filled with very different people. its not surprising to me that theres livestock vets who refuse to see change

#hell ive met small animal vets who dgaf about things being done a new or better way #no vets are perfect but my original thing was just saying that vets are generally knowledgeable on nutrition #and people who think all vets are being sponsored by Big Kibble are wackadoodles #animal welfare on farms is something im really interested in but its also kind of been something ive considered changing my major over #i love working with animals and being part of production but like i said the absolute lack of perspective some people have is gross #and its not like theyre evil or whatever theyre usually just old farmers set in their ways who will die with their beliefs before they let #some kid tell them otherwise #me when i could be doing soil science or whatever the fuck but here i am working in an industry where a single chain is considered #'enrichment' #<- real thing btw. at our pig farm. ppl said there wasnt enough enrichment so they put a chain for the pigs to chew #and called it a day #asks #anon
