#41. Comfort Food

Ben and the girls knew something was wrong. June rarely overslept. When she finally came downstairs, she looked really tired. Not only that, her eyes looked a little red and her voice sounded horse.

"Mommy, are you okay?", Beth asked.

June looked up at the group bleary eyed and told them she was alright. None of them believed her. She sniffled and moved through the kitchen sluggishly as she prepared breakfast. She fixed herself a cup of coffee, but it didn't seem to help. When she was done, she shuffled off to the living room. They could hear a raspy cough as she sagged onto the couch.

"I think mommy has a cold.", Beth whispered. Sarah agreed. Ben was a little worried. He had seen people sick before. In the Studio, the ink had terrible affects on people. The results were often deadly.

Ben peeked at June from the kitchen as the girls checked up on her. Again, she told them she was fine but that she just needed to close her eyes for awhile. She did grab a few tissues out of a box and blew her nose. The sound that he heard made Ben's horns twitch.

The girls came back in the kitchen, totally convinced that their mom had a bad cold. They all wanted to help her, but they weren't sure how. The girls began to list off things she did for them when Sarah came up with an idea.

"Mommy makes chicken soup when we're not feeling good.", she said quietly.

"Chicken soup! That's a great idea!", Beth declared. They searched the cupboards but to their dismay, could not find a single can of soup. They did find a container of chicken broth with an easy chicken soup recipe on the back. With this, they could make the soup themselves!

The demon would prepare it himself. He knew June didn’t want the girls using the stove or sharp knives, so he offered to do those parts for them. He told them what they needed and the children started gathering the ingredients.

Ben got out the measuring cups, spoons and a large pot. He poured the broth and as much water that the recipe required. He had been watching June cook for months, but this was the first time he would be doing it himself. He wouldn't say it out loud, but he was a little nervous. He put the pot over a low flame.

He found some chicken breast in the refrigerator along with some carrots and celery. Sarah found a box of egg noodles in the cupboard and Beth handed him an onion. It looked like they had everything they needed, they just needed to put it all together.

Ben cleaned and cut up the chicken and vegetables carefully, remembering how June did it. He had a little trouble with the onions because it stung his eyes. He always thought that only happened in cartoons.

He put everything in the pot with alittle salt and pepper then covered it to let it simmer on the stove. He checked on June and found Shadow and Cloudy sitting close to her. The ink cat had their head in her lap and the kitten was curled up by her feet. Her light sleep was interrupted by a cough that wracked her body. She tried to hide it but she looked miserable.

June groaned and tried to get up to work around the house, but Ben gently pushed her back onto the couch. Beth got a blanket out of the linen closet and covered her with it. They told her to rest and that they would handle some of the chores.

The girls tidied up their room while Ben cleaned up after himself in the kitchen. All the while, he kept a watchful eye on the soup. When the chicken looked tender enough, he added the egg noodles. The soup would be done as soon as the noodles were done. He just hoped it came out alright.

By the time the children finished cleaning their room, the house was filled with a wonderful smell. The soup was ready. Ben called the girls and fixed two small bowls of soup for them. They sat at the kitchen table as he gave them each a bowl. He stood by nervously as they sipped the broth.

"Mmm, this is really good!", Beth gasped. Sarah agreed. It almost tasted like their mother's cooking. Ben’s chest swelled with pride at the children’s praise. He just hoped June found it just as good.

Ben fixed June a good helping of chicken soup in a large bowl and took it to her. When Shadow saw him coming and they nudged her gently until she groggily opened her eyes. The demon sat next to her on the couch and gingerly handed her the bowl of soup.

June was surprised. She had no idea Ben was cooking something. Her nose was so clogged she couldn't smell a thing. She asked him if he made it himself. He told her he had help from the girls. She smiled at that.

Ben watched her closely as she took a few, cautious spoonfuls of chicken and noodles. Her eyes slipped closed and she hummed softly. She smiled and looked pleasantly surprised as she tucked into her meal.

"Isss it alright?", Ben tilted his head and asked softly.

"Oh Ben, it's delicious!", June beamed. She leaned against his side and took another spoonful. "Thank you."

The demon smiled as a warmth blossomed in his chest. It felt good to do something that made her feel better. He placed his long arm around her shoulders and hugged her gently.

"You're welcome."

To say I'm late in posting this would be a giant understatement.

I was going to post this long before,but things happened, and I ended up not being able to post it and so I kind of forgot about it. And when I was going to post this a few days ago,more things happened and I ended up not posting again. :-)))))

Oh well.🙃

I did this during last year's Ink Demonth,as the first day's theme was "Pride". So I decided to draw the idea that,let's face it,made a lot of sense with the theme.

So,right to left,we have: Abby Lambert (Bi) (and who for some reason her hair color is way redder here) Grant Cohen (Gay) (+Design reveal! Sort of. I had to make him a new design specifically for this drawing) And an OC of mine,Sarah Stein (Yes, she's Henry's daughter) (and a lesbian)

I was originally just going to draw Grant but I didn't want to leave him alone so I decided to add 2 more characters. Abby and Sarah were the only ones that came to mind that day. Maybe drawing them wearing clothes or accessories with the colors of the Gay,Lesbian and Bi flags is the most basic and cliche idea one can do. But it was that or just drawing each character with the flags as a background,which would be much more basic and cliche.

But yeah.....umm...so,happy post-pride????

There were a lot of things about Ben that were a mystery to Beth and Sarah. He was very quiet for someone so tall, often sneaking up on everyone in the house and laughing. He hated snow but loved to watch thunderstorms. Thunder and lightning was scary but it didn't bother him at all.

The one thing that really puzzled them was that sometimes he would sit on the back porch and stare up at the sky. He usually did it just as the sun was going down.

He'd sit there for hours, staring at nothing and it was starting to annoy Beth. One day she decided to get to the bottom of this. She grabbed Sarah’s hand and they followed Ben out the back door.

"What are you doing?", Beth asked. The children sat next to the lanky demon on the porch. He huffed softly but didn't take his eyes off the sky.

"I'm watching the sun set.", Ben whispered.

"But why?" Beth made a face and waved her small hands at the sky. "There is nothing special about it."

"I like sunsets."

"But why?", Beth whines. Ben stayed silent. He gave his reasons and he wasn’t going to repeat himself.

"Maybe he likes the pretty colors!", Sarah chimed in. Ben smiled at that.

"But that's stupid! Sunsets happen everyday." Beth crossed her arms and pouted. She hated when he didn't answer her questions.

Ben sighed and asked, "Do you remember what it was like in the Studio?"

"Yeah? It was full of monsters!" Beth glanced at her sister nervously.

"It was dark and scary there too." Sarah stared down at her hands and fidgeted with the tips of her fingers.

"There are no windows in the studio.", Ben hummed softly.

"No windows?" Beth looked confused. "What does that have to do with anything?"

Ben simply tilted his head in her direction. His mouth was set in a grim, thin line. It took a few minutes of silence before her eyes grew wide and she finally got it.

"You couldn’t see outside..." She frowned when Ben said yes. Just the thought of not being able to see the sun, the moon or even the stars upset her. She was beginning to understand why he liked to watch the sky so much.

Beth and Sarah looked up and as the sun slowly descended in the sky. The clouds were bathed in bright reds, orange, and even pink. The Sun's rays streaked through a particularly large cloud before fading to the dark blues of the starry night sky.

The girls pointed to the fading colors, noting how beautiful they were. Ben agreed. Watching the sun set and nightfall roll in was truly breathtaking no matter how many times he saw it.

The children's soft chatter and giggles were barely heard as he let his thoughts wander. For a time, he was angered by how much of the outside world was denied to him for so long. Now that he was able to enjoy such simple pleasures on his own, he was happier and calmer for it.

Ben was startled by a loud squeal from Beth. She pointed to something in the night sky. There, a streak of light flew overhead.

"Look, a shooting star!", she said giddily.

"Quick! Make a wish!", Sarah giggled. "You too Ben!"

Ben watched with a bemused grin as Beth and Sarah pressed their tiny hands together and quietly stated their wishes. A new bike and a puppy made him chuckle. If they ever got a puppy, he hoped they would name them Boris.

When they were done, they asked him what he wished for. The demon just grinned lopsidedly and said if he told them, it wouldn't come true. Beth whined and said how unfair that was. Sarah agreed since he knew their wished. Ben shook his head and kept quiet.

The children pestered him about his wish until Jason called them in for dinner. They went inside, washed their hands and sat at the table. As the food was being served, Ben knew he didn't really need to wish upon a star. He had everything he could ever want right here and he hoped it would last forever.
