If Blindsight by Peter Watts were a famous book, there'd bee no competition against Siri Keeton in the poorest little meow meow poll that's been circulating on this site.

Man Jukka Sarasti huh. Let me just brutally maul this guy and rip through his coping mechanisms and force him to feel empathy for the first time in his life so that he can have an epiphany about these aliens we're studying. Then I'll die

This is Maelle Forget, one of our more "docile" patient at the G.I.I's "Habilitation Centers". Although docile doesn't mean harmless, She's still a Vampire after all.

Hi! This is a teaser for something I'm currently Working on. A Scifi Horror Setting, with scientifically explanable Vampires, Werewolfs, Zombies, and much much more... This Setting started out as a Blindsight AU but the addition I made to the world, the Vampire biology, neurology, etc and a general desire to have more then just Vampires made me make this a separated setting (Althouth, Alot of aspects of Vampire lore was kept from Peter Watts amazing work, so yes, technically this is very much A Blindsight AU) other inspiration are from Though Potato's channel, like the whole idea of scientists researching cryptids and creatures and explaining the science. I also wanted to make it into Analog Horror but I certainly doubt my skillsets would allow me.

For all that I joke about primarchshipping and get a lot of angsty mileage out of it on ao3, hand on heart I don't actually think they're physically or emotionally capable of anything approaching a conventional romantic relationship regardless of whether it's with each other or with Enoby Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way who got magically transported to the Vengeful Spirit to fix that fucking slaphead Horus.
To be clear I'm not arguing that they were ignorant of the concepts of romantic or platonic love as ideas, and I think they could and did form very intense bonds with one another that can definitely be read as romantic if you're in the mood to do so.
I appreciate the sibling aspect turns off a lot of people and that's totally understandable. I guess my view is, are they really siblings in any meaningful way? They're barely even people in any meaningful way. It's like if two robots from the same factory want to clang their faceplates together.
More like Ken dolls actually. Fundamentally broken artificially created magical space Ken dolls intended, in my view at least, to be expended as necessary during the Great Crusade with the survivors being quietly disposed of just like the Thunder Warriors.
There's a short story from around the Early Stone Age of the Star Wars EU (rip) about Dengar, the bounty hunter with the bandaged head in Empire Strikes Back, in which we get to see his backstory as a swoop bike racer who crashed because of Han Solo and was then experimented on by Imperial biotechnologists who literally burned away certain areas of his brain to make him into the most effective warrior.
Metal 🤘
And in later stories he gets engaged. It was here I first learned the word "betrothed" and by god you'll come out of the series with it seared into your retinas because it's repeated so bloody much.
But it does, in its clunky 90s Star Wars "jizz wailer is a canonical occupation" way, touch on the difficulty if not the impossibility of trying to have a romantic relationship with someone in whose psyche the capability simply is not there.
To my knowledge WH canon is fairly quiet about this except for the bit in Fulgrim's primarch book where he talks about being married multiple times on Chemos.
Lol, said the primarch fans, lmao. He liked the ceremonies, he made sure he was the centre of attention at all times, the usual Fulgrim shenanigans.
But the relevant aspect in my view is what Fulgrim says about whether he actually loved any of them:
Tumblr media
Royalty fans may recall the infamous interview with Diana Spencer and the then Prince Charles in 1981:

It was cringe in Kensington Palace and it was cringe on Chemos too.
Anyhow, this is interesting to me because Flugelhorn is the kind of person who, when he can do something, will give you three chapters and a short story about exactly how great it was. But when he fails at something I think he's more likely to destroy, hide or avoid it, for example his roomful of smashed soullessly-perfect statues in Fulgrim or flailing around like Beaker the Muppet when someone asks him if he loved any of his spouses.
I guess my point is, the primarchs aren't really human and never were. Sometimes I think of them a bit like Peter Watts vampires, which are an artificially-resurrected extinct predatory hominid species that look human-ish, and you can be in the same room as one and even talk to one, but they're heavily implied to be philosophical zombies who aren't sentient, or perhaps even conscious, in anything like the same way humans are.
This is becoming far more deep and intellectual than I intended so let's just pretend I spent this post talking about Fulgrim's favourite colour of body glitter or comparing him to Maximillion Pegasus or something.

Blindsight recently got rereleased in Poland and I just wanted to show off the phenomenal cover art 🥺 🥺 🥺
The white cross on the side is also a great touch. Genuinely catches my eye every time I look at my shelf. Real crucifix glitch inducing

So I started reading Blindsight by Peter Watts.
Can anyone that read it give me their [if possible, free of spoilers] opinions on it?

FOR LISA: If we’re not in pain, we’re not alive.

I was here thinking and the conclusion is: Dennis Villeneuve would be a great director if Blindsight was ever adapted into a movie.
I think he handles the weird and mysterious really well (Arrival, Enemy), he handles lonely characters really well too (BR2049, especially, but not only), and his handling of violence is very classy (Prisoners, SIcario), just as (I think) it would be perfect for Blindsight.
Or, we could also bring Tarkovsky back to life. That would work too.

siri keeton: hello, my job is to take the jargon spat out by hyperintelligent posthumans and translate it into something that the average person can understand. in order to do this, i must observe, and due to this (and other various traumas in my past) i've developed a set of algorithms to study and mimic human behavior.
everyone, for some reason: you unfeeling monster. you unsentient creature. get out of my fucking sight.

I'd love to write more fanfiction, but I feel like I'm not smart enough to write for most of my fandoms lol.
And by that I mean I wanna write Firefall fanfic, but the worldbuilding of Peter Watts is absolutely fucking bonkers.
Ah well. I still have that Deep Rock Galactic x Dwarf Fortress fanfic series. I'm still rather happy with how it turned out.
