Humanity and the Lack Thereof
This essay was co-written between Rani and Viridian; Viridian's text is in green and bracketed.
Humanity is an interesting thing.
I am otherkin. I am nonhuman, a dragon-in-human-skin, draconic to my core. I feel phantom wings and tail, the instinctive knowledge of how to breathe fire even though I don’t understand how it works, a bones-deep longing and homesickness for the sky, numerous instincts and urges tied to being something other than human. Many who are like me reject humanity entirely, don’t feel human at all. And yet, I am also human, deeply and truly. I am just as human as I am dragon - I like my human body, I love the things I can do with it (hands, dexterous hands, are a wonderful thing), I overall enjoy my human life. I am nonhuman, but I am not not human.
Viridian, who is watching “over my shoulder” as I write this, is a vampire. She is a fictive, from one of the Vampire: the Masquerade games that I play in, wherein vampires are typically considered to be… on the boundary line between “human” and “nonhuman.” Many vampires cling to their humanity and adamantly consider themselves human; I would go so far as to say this is the norm. Those who do not often become monstrous indeed, though often they do not.
[ I do not consider myself human. I am Kindred, vampire, Cainite. I am part of humanity, as a general populace - but I do not like being called human.
[ I think part of it is that being human is often put in direct opposition to being vampire as a personal identifier. Those who adamantly insist they are “still human” often mean as opposed to being a vampire instead. Being no longer human is, as Rani wrote, often considered a sign of becoming a monster instead.
[ But I worked hard for my Embrace, my being turned into a vampire. I worked to earn the right to call myself Kindred for nearly a decade. And yes, perhaps some of it is that I was taught by my original sire that the Embrace was an ascension above humanity, and that still colors my feelings on my own vampirism even if I acknowledge that he was wrong to consider us inherently above humans. But much of it is that being called human feels like a denial of my vampirism, a rejection of it, and for me that is not empowering - it is denying and rejecting something deeply important to me. Kindred is who I am. Human was only ever circumstantially true, a circumstance of birth - Kindred was something I actively sought out, pursued, chose. ]
Which is interesting, because to a certain extent, “human” is only circumstantially true for me, too. If I hadn’t been born human, I sincerely doubt I would identify as one in the same way that I identify as a dragon despite not being born into a dragon body. I could be wrong, of course - I have no way to prove it either way - but I suspect that if I am correct about reincarnation and I end up in another body after this one, I will not have the same “spillover” of humanity that I do of draconity from my dragon life.
And yet, I am human, and I actively dislike it when people try to strip that from me. Part of that, admittedly, is that the handful that try to see me as only dragon, and reject that I am human, are usually doing it because they’re violently misanthropic individuals, so it’s soured the whole thing for me because the reason they’re rejecting my humanity is so they can try to get me to shit-talk the rest of humanity with them. (If I have to hear one more dragon legitimately, whole-heartedly say that they think humanity should be extincted, I’m going to lose it.) But part of it is that my humanity is important to me, just as important as my draconity. I am both. I’ve written whole essays on this topic.
[ In that way, perhaps we’re not so different after all. I dislike being called human because it feels like a rejection of who I am, who I chose to be; you dislike being called not-human because it is a rejection of who you are. ]
Maybe so. Funny how different societal circumstances can yield opposite results from the same kind of pressures.
I think that part of the discrepancy between us is also that I’m a very physical person. Frankly, I am a chemical creature; I enjoy physicality, I enjoy affectionate touch, I enjoy the physical pleasures life has to offer. I enjoy food. I enjoy sexual pleasure. I enjoy the exhilaration of getting my heart going and my instincts fired up in a self-defense class. I live, I live, I live! is ever a cry of joy in my heart. And a lot of that ties into my animality! I am a dragon animal, yes, but I am also a human animal, and both of these things must be satisfied! The dragon yearns for the wind and the view when I climb up to a height, for the fire of battle I can get out of a sparring match; the human yearns for the taste of sun-warm berries right off the bush, for the warm press of bodies when I hug and cuddle with loved ones. Both of them love a good nap in the sun. I am a physical creature, I am an animal, and my animal-ness connects me to my body and thus to my humanity, rather than separating me from it.
[ Meanwhile, none of this has ever been true for me. Yes, of course I enjoy certain delicacies; I miss my brother’s cookies periodically, it’s true. But I’ve never loved these things the way Rani does. It’s not that I dislike the pleasures of life, but I’ve just… never really cared. It wasn’t much of a loss when I was Embraced, to trade food and sunlight and heartbeat for immortality and knowledge and power. It was almost convenient to not have to deal with the maintenance a living body requires - no excretion of waste, no inconvenient aches or pains or stomach cramps, a frankly much more manageable frequency of requiring sustenance. My body is just a tool, and the Embrace made it more efficient in most ways. And now, after twenty-three years of being dead, being in a living body again is overwhelming in some ways and just downright unpleasant in others. Even most of the physical matters Rani actively enjoys are either overwhelming or uninteresting for me. I am happy to leave the care and maintenance of the body to them. It’s not necessarily that I actively had a disconnect from my human body, originally, so much as that I didn’t have an active connection to it to make me identify with it, and thus my being “human” was, as I said, only ever circumstantial. My becoming Kindred overrode it, and I prefer to leave it that way.
[ Ironic, that the one whose nonhumanity is so human-shaped should be the one to reject humanity, but here we are. ]
Here we are.

Several moons have passed since your family went back to Dragonstone.
Shortly after your family left King's Landing, you visited them on Dragonstone. After all, you had to bring Meraxes to King's Landing. And although you would never admit it to Jace, you miss his constant presence. Just as you miss not having your father around.
For Meraxes, the adjustment to now living in King's Landing has not been easy.
Since she has been alive, she has been used to being with Vermax, Arrax, Caraxes as well as Syrax. Just as you were used to growing up close to your siblings, Meraxes did with your brothers' and parents' dragons.
Now she lives in the dragonpit, a very different environment and with three other dragons at that. She gets along with Vhagar, Sunfyre and Dreamfyre, but you can tell it's not easy for her.
You try to make the transition as easy as possible for her. You spend many hours in the dragonpit. As soon as Aemond goes to training, you go to the dragonpit. Often you sit leaning against Meraxes and read books. But just as often you try to ride out with her. Then you grab Aemond and ride with Meraxes and Vhagar through the clouds above King's Landing. Meraxes and Vhagar seem to be getting on well, at least you sense that the old dragon lady seems to be reassuring Meraxes. When you arrive at the dragonpit after breakfast, Meraxes is actually always with Vhagar. You like the idea that Meraxes seems to feel comfortable with Vhagar, just as you feel comfortable with Aemond.
When you are not in the dragonpit, you are in Aemond's chambers. You enjoy your new life with Aemond to the fullest and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. All the countless hours you spend together in his chambers. He usually has a book on his lap and you in his arms while you enjoy the peace and quiet together. Or he may have you sitting on his lap while you enjoy yourselves for hours under the sheets in his bed.
But mostly you just sit in front of the fireplace. You sit cross-legged on the sofa while Aemond sits on the floor in front of you, his back turned to you. Of course, he is reading a book while you run your hands through his soft hair.
Tonight was another one of those evenings. After dinner you sneaked into his chambers, and now you sit in front of the fire and let your fingers wander through his hair again. Slowly you begin to braid individual strands. Aemond wouldn't admit it, but he likes how lovingly you always take care of his hair.
When he has a few braids in his hair, you must imagine how nice it would be to have a daughter walking through your chambers who would also fall in love with his hair and couldn't keep her hands off it.
"You know what?", you murmur.
An "mmhm?" rings out in his chest.
"If we had a daughter, she would love your hair as well"
You hear him chuckle, "I think I already have one person by my side who can't keep her hands off my hair...I wouldn't need a daughter for that"
Lightly you nudge his back with your knee. You let your fingers glide further through his soft hair. Almost absently, you ask him, "Do you think we're allowed to have shared chambers already?"
Aemond looks at you over his shoulder, "We spend most of our time together anyway?"
You nod, your hands not leaving his hair, "Yes, but I mean, my things would be here as well... Do you think that would be allowed?"
"Why not? I'll instruct that first thing tomorrow," his gaze returning to the book in his lap.
You hit him lightly on the shoulder, "It's not that simple.... We're not married yet. We should probably ask your parents for permission first"
He shakes his head slightly, "We are betrothed and as good as wed. Why ask?"
"Aemond..."
"Well if it feels better for you, of course I will ask" Slowly he leans his head back and lets it rest in your lap. You lean forward and gently kiss his lips.
"Thank you...", you whisper.
A light "mmmh" can be heard.
The next day after breakfast, when you set off for the dragonpit, Aemond goes to see his mother. It doesn't really seem necessary for him to ask permission to share your chambers. You are going to get married soon, and whether you sleep in the same bed now or in a few weeks officially ... well, it makes no difference to him. But you care and he takes your needs seriously, so he will talk to his mother now.
When he enters her chambers, Alicent looks up. She is sitting on a bench and Helaena is with her. Helaena smiles joyfully at her brother. He smiles sweetly at her.
"Aemond," Alicent smiles.
Aemond nods at her, "Mother. I have a request."
She looks at him questioningly, "What would you like to ask?"
Aemond tries to smile, "y/n and I would like to share our chambers already now."
Alicent looks shocked, "What? It is not customary for the wife and husband to share chambers."
She doesn't seem to fully understand Aemond or doesn't want to understand him.
He sighs, " y/n and I will not have a marriage where we do not share our chambers. But we would already like to move into shared chambers now."
He stands in front of her, his hands clasped behind his back, and he can literally see Alicent beginning to understand.
She looks at him shocked, "Already?! Aemond! You can't! What kind of talk would that create?"
He looks at her unimpressed, "I don't give a damn mother. What is the gossip supposed to accomplish? That y/n will be pushed into a marriage with me?"
She looks at him still shocked, "Aemond.... have you already slept with her...?"
Amond's face takes on serious features, "That, mother, is really none of your business."
She inhales sharply. She is irritated by his dismissive attitude. "Aemond. You can't behave like this."
But he sticks to his decision, "Mother. I'm going to marry her in a few weeks. If it were up to me, she would already be my wife. I only approached you with this request out of courtesy and because it was important to y/n. We will have common chambers."
Alicent just shakes her head slowly. Helaena has to grin. She thinks it's sweet that Aemond is so committed to you. Aegon wouldn't even come close to doing the same for her.
Alicent turns back to Aemond, "Very well.... That doesn't mean I approve of it. But while you're here, y/n should think about which lady-in-waiting she would like to have."
Aemond gives her an irritated look, "Y/n doesn't care for that sort of thing. She's perfectly capable of taking care of her own needs."
"I'm glad for her. Still, she is now a lady of the court. A princess," she replies to Aemond.
Now Aemond is the one shaking his head, "Yes, but that does not change the fact that it is independent. She will not need a lady-in-waiting. Mother... there is nothing more to say. I shall take my leave. I have responsibilities to fulfill," He bows his head briefly as he turns his back to her and leaves her chambers.
Alicent just stares after him in disbelief.
As Helaena turns to her mother, "Mother, don't you think it's sweet how Aemond stands up for y/n needs?"
Alicent just smiles at her absently, "Yes my dear... That is indeed sweet."
Alicent seeks out Viserys shortly thereafter.
She is worried about what kind of gossip might arise if you already share your chambers and she hopes that Viserys will side with her this time.
But he looks at her half amused, "Are you serious? It bothers you that she doesn't want a lady-in-waiting?"
She snorts, "Did you ignore the first part? That's half the point, but they want to share their chambers.... Even before the wedding!"
Viserys shakes his head dismissively, "What can I say about that? They're young, they're in love. And they're soon to be wed. Of course they want to spend their time together."
Alicent looks at him in shock. Just once, she wished he would stand behind her. "How can you tolerate such a thing?"
Viserys just looks at her, "Perhaps I'm just happy for my son that he can marry for love."
Alicent gives him a pained look and just nods.
***
For a few weeks now you have been living in your shared chambers.
You love the fact that you can now spend evenings with Aemond without secrecy. In the afternoon you are with Aemond in your chambers. Aemond sits on the sofa and reads a book, you lie on the bed and look at the ceiling. Nothing makes you happier than being with Aemond now, but still you feel something missing. You could almost say you're bored in King's Landing. Even Aegon has been rather boring lately. It seems like he's been drunk a lot more often since his wedding than he was before. But he's probably just getting ready to father offspring with Helaena.
And even though you enjoy your time with Aemond, you notice that your brothers are not present. They are always up for some nonsense or silly conversation. Even Rob's presence would make you happy right now.
Gods what you would give for a little game.
You lift your head and look over at Aemond. He is still sitting on the sofa and reading.
"Aemond... I'm bored," you finally say.
He looks up from his book, "Then read a little. There are still some books over there," he points briefly to a small table by the door."
You pout a bit, "I already have..."
Aemond raises an eyebrow.
"And I miss my brothers.... My parents...?"
Now he smiles at you.
"After all, my brothers... even Rob... were always up for a game or something like that."
Now you have him, he turns further in your direction, "Well, I'm up for that too"
You sit up and smile at him, "My dear betrothed.... I love you because of your tender ways... your sharp mind... maybe because of your beauty too... But playing games is not exactly your strong suit."
He looks at you almost offended, "Well, as far as I can remember, our entire childhood consisted of playing games."
You have to stifle a laugh, "Oh really...? We were children, Aemond, we knew nothing but playing games.“
Now he closes his book, "I can play games!"
You grin, "Yeah? Okay, let's go"
He stands up, "What do you want to do?"
You think for a moment, ".... mmhm how about drinking tea..."
He raises an eyebrow, "Drink tea? And you say I'm boring..." "... naked."
He looks at you with his mouth half open.
"And I never said you were boring. I want to make that clear."
Aemond is still standing there looking at you. Slowly you rise from the bed and walk towards him, "Will you have tea with me?"
As you stand in front of him, your hand wanders to the first buckle of your dress.
Now he has to grin, "Okay.... I'll get the tea... and then we'll enjoy the afternoon with a cup of tea.... naked."
You grin back and nod.
Aemond instructed the first servant he met to bring tea to your chambers.
After a short while, there is a knock at the door. Aemond opens it and takes the tea. After he has placed the tea on a small table by the sofa, the two of you stand facing each other.
Slowly you raise your hand to undo the buckles of his leather waistcoat and take it off. "Mmhm do you want to undress me?", Aemond asks you. You just smile.
While you tamper with his vest, Aemond begins to undo the buckle of your dress. When he has undone it, he lets your dress slowly slide to the floor. You take the vest off over his head, and as Aemond stands there in just his trousers, you turn around. You slip out of your dress and on your way to the sofa you slowly take off your panties.
Aemond looks at you and starts to open his pants.
A pleasant silence spreads as you sit on the sofa and drink tea in a relaxed manner.
You are facing him. He looks beautiful.
He sits still, which allows you to take in his whole naked body. His soft hair falls over his bare shoulder and ends on his defined chest. The chest you love to touch when you lose yourself in a deep kiss with him, or when your head rests on his chest, or even when you sit on him…. and you try to find support with your hands on his chest. Every movement with which he brings the cup to his mouth is watched by you. The muscles in his arm dance during these movements and have your full attention. You watch as his slender, long fingers wrap around the cup.... Where those fingers have been all over your body.... You can't really believe you get to wed him.
As your gaze returns to his face, you notice that he is also looking at your body, a smile not leaving his lips.
You have to grin, "So, are you bored?" you finally ask before taking a sip of the tea and gently setting the cup down on the table.
"Mmmhm, not at all my Love.... In fact, I don't think I've ever found it so exciting to have tea with someone before."
He looks into your eyes and leans forward. Just as he is about to kiss you, your door opens.
"Aemond? Aegon and..."
Aemond shouts out, "Mother! No! Get out!"
You startle and see Alicent standing wide-eyed in the doorway. Aegon is standing directly behind Alicent, he has a big grin on his face and is staring directly in your direction.
When Aemond notices this, he half leans over you and yells at Aegon, "Aegon! I'm warning you! Avert your gaze from her at once, or I will blind you so that your eyes can never wander over her body again!"
Alicent just stutters things like "Apologies" and "I'll talk to you later" and turns around. She pushes Aegon out of your chambers, who doesn't seem to want to move at first, and closes the door behind her.
You sit on the sofa and somehow try to cover your breasts with your hands. Aemond is still half on top of you and he looks stressed. He looks at you as you start to laugh. At first he looks incredulous, until he joins in your laughter.
You pull him closer to you and smother his laughter with a kiss. You murmur against his lips, "Well, I think this is going to be an interesting dinner tonight"
Aemond shakes his head, "What you always talk me into"
"Mmhm, could I talk you into something else?", you slowly let your hand wander down his firm stomach.
He smiles at you and kisses you, an "mmhm" stuck deep in his throat.
As if by itself, your hand wraps around his hot length. Slowly you let your hand slide up and down. Aemond gasps into your mouth as you exchange hot kisses.
He doesn't wait long and climbs over you and gently pushes you down onto the sofa, placing himself between your legs. His crotch presses against your hot core and gently his cock slides through your already wet fold, you moan and wrap your arms around his neck to pull him closer to you. Greedy kisses leave your lips.
"Aemond... please... I need you...", impatiently you push your hips towards him.
Aemond chuckles, "I like it when you plead for something… for me…"
He lets his lips wander over your neck and leaves hot kisses. Slowly he positions himself in front of your entrance. You continue to press your wet core against him and you gasp as he enters you with one thrust, filling you completely. Without being able to adjust to his size, he thrusts into you with full force.
You moan in unison as you cling to him to feel him even deeper. Aemond holds you tightly by your hips, spreading your legs wider to get better access. He lets his cock slide out and in. With every thrust he pushes deeper into you.
He moans loudly as he notices you tense around his cock and increases the pace of his thrusts.
"Fuck... Aemond... I'm close..." you gasp.
An "already?" leaves his lips. You only manage to kiss him.
He lets his hand wander to your clit and starts massaging it with circular movements. Your thighs start to tremble.
"Let me feel you come," he whispers in your ear. That's enough to push you over the edge. You cry out, Aemond immediately clasps your lips with his to muffle your outcry. You grab his shoulder for support. Aemond realizes he can't hold on much longer either. Seeing you like this, naked under him, full of lust and satisfied. He moans out as he pulls his pulsing length out of you, spreading his hot seed over your breasts.
He groans as he slowly lets himself fall backward. He soaks up the sight of you.
"We should drink tea more often," he finally gasps.
You smile with your eyes closed, "So Aegon can surprise us while we're naked?"
You open your eyes as you get no response from Aemond, he just looks at you.
You nudge him lightly with your foot, "I was joking... Now… clean me up."
Aemond chuckles as he gets up to get his vest, "As my princess wishes".
He sits back down between your legs and gently cleans you up, "Though I actually quite like the look of it."
You smile, "I know.... But I prefer not to be full of your cum for dinner."
He grins, "Interesting thought though," he leans forward and kisses you gently, you hold him close to you by his neck.
In the evening you are in the hall for dinner. Aegon, drunk as always, grins incessantly in your direction. You do your best to ignore him. Aemond, on the other hand, does not ignore him, he looks at him warningly.
Alicent does not even look in your direction. Not from any of you. You can tell from her red cheeks that she must be uncomfortable with the way she found you.
You try to concentrate on the conversation with Helaena, apparently she has been given a new book about various insects that probably only exist in Essos, as the door to the hall opens. Your grandfather slowly enters the hall. He doesn't often eat dinner with you, but today he takes the time and strength to do so. He is not doing so well lately. You see him much less often and when you do, he often moans in pain and smiles in agony. As a result of all this, he talks much less than usual.
You're worried about him.

I really enjoy your writing and thoughts on Cybertronian culture and wondered how you think the bots would show gestures of affection, what I mean is I feel that humans are very tactile and touch oriented but transformers may be just as much but in a far more subtle ways such as a little head pat or a stroke down the spinal strut,a gesture of complete trust and friendship or the gently brush of a EM field, I just wondered how you think the bots would do this and perhaps how they would try and communicate this to the kids. :0 I hope your well, no rush!!
A good idea! So sorry it took so long to get to it! I love culture tidbits, I am just a tad overwhelmed right now! Also I have a bad habit of hoarding requests like some dragon on a pile of gold.
Displays of Affection
Affection on Cybertron is far different than how it is for humanity. There is little need for touch to signify things due to the presence of fields and proximity sensors. The only reason for a mech to be touching another individual is to examine them for injuries or to make a point, be it good or bad. Touch is reserved for important things and thus is kept to a minimum amongst the most civilized mecha.
That is not to say that Cybertronians do not enjoy touch. No, due to the sheer number of sensors and other alerts that they are constantly swamped in, a loving touch means a great deal. However to preserve their sanity and to not be overwhelmed, touch is kept quiet and often very gentle. Between strangers, touch is nonexistent, it simply isn't a part of life. Words and EM field communication are the preferred method, and even then EM fields are very sensitive so most often they wouldn't use those either. It takes time for touch to be given, and it is always a gift, thus never being seen between those who do not know one another.
For co-workers and those bound together by circumstance, touch is still not part of life unless absolutely required. If necessary, touch is accepted with begrudging understanding between co-workers, however at most it is EM field communication that is used as a replacement if touch must be used at all. A quick flare of a field as a warning or a swift mingling to soothe a worried spark is about the limit of what is seen amongst acquaintances and wary partners. Perhaps there may be a swift tap to the shoulder plating, the least sensitive part of the body to catch the attention of a mech unable or unwilling to be aware of EM fields, but beyond that there is no other interaction.
Amongst friends touch begins to happen, but always with fields first. A gentle touch of fields to show affection and a constant soothing wavelength going back and forth to keep the other happy and content is fairly common. Shoulder touches are also something seen amongst friends since it is a sign of trust, a show that one believes the other willing to guard them. Of course touching does not go much farther than that. The shoulders are the limit die to how armored they are and how difficult it would be to cause pain through touch in that area. Even still, it is a far greater act of trust than that offered to simple co-workers.
Amica bonded get special treatment when it comes to touch. They are bound together by spark and are like siblings in all but CNA and thus know each other better. Fields mingle and share emotion in a way no others do, touches are gentle and loving, often running along back struts and along limbs in a kind manner. Words are less often used and instead replaced by the unspoken communication that comes from bonds. Soft songs are uttered in the dead of night and soft almost fearful hugs are exchanged during the darkest times. Every moment is cherished and every touch remembered.
For any sort of familial bond, be it between a caretaker and their charge or a bonded Conjunx pair, touch is common but quiet. Hugs are soft and loving but never done publicly. Quick but silent caresses of the frame along the back and face are regular and the odd servo holding is also something commonly seen. Fields eternally mingle in family units, projecting emotion, love, and projection at every moment alongside thoughts and desire. Cybertronians don't kiss as more often than not, it is simply an impossible task with their facial structure. However their equivalent emotionally is a soft touch of the helm crests, an act seen amongst all sorts of familial units and known to be the highest form of affection.
Touch is a gift, one only rarely given. While it is offered to other races freely, amongst Cybertronians, touch is something kept for deeper relationships and reasons.

I love your comic. But I don't understand one thing...
Why is the Hidden City Council helping Bishop?
From what I remember it's impossible to distinguish between a mutant and a yokai. And I don't see any interest in it for the Council to fight mutants. So why?
If this is some kind of spoiler to the story to I will understand if you leave it unanswered
Okay, theres a lot to say here and while it's mostly head canon, its all based on evidence in show or how the real world works, but we'll start with this. Yokai and Mutants are definitely not the same thing. Like, at all.
Mutants, unlike yokai, were literally genetically designed by Draxum. Of course, it's more of a broad design with most of them, but the boys had a genetic donor hand-picked. They are war machines.
Mutants, are specifically made to be weapons.
Yokai... while it's said that the empyrean is the cause of them, that was said unofficially outside the show, therefore we don't take it as canon. We've also said before that we head canon empyrean as more as a mystic enhancer.
Taking into account Japanese folklore, which has been around far longer than the point the kraang has been assumed to arrive, as well as the life span yokai have. Big mama probably isn't exaggerating when she says they've been around for eons.
While we can only find this on the wiki and can't remember an episode where this is mentioned(it might be made up), but an individual yokai ages 10:1 relative to a human. This means Baron Draxum is in his 400's-500's. This means that the yokai world, with how developed it is, has been around for a long, long time.
If we look at how the boys are aging... at best they have human life spans, but if we look at mikey in the movie he has aged much, much more than the others. Mikey species of turtle can live to 100 (making him the longest lived of the bunch), but with how using mystics seems to age him... yeah. (but, it could be from not being trained properly) (also, with this aging side efect, if it's common, yokai might actually live for even longer if they didn't use mystics. Barry could just be in his 300 or something.)
Mutants don't age like yokai.
Also, indistinguishable???? (i mean that's what a lot of the humans in residuum will think, but-) Mutants are just... like, animal but make it human(if they have a human component). Yokai are much, much more diverse with body plans than mutants are. Mother fcking bone man??? skin man????? multiple limb, multiple eyes. literal orcs and dragons and slime people and-
Yokai aren't designed. (i mean they are, by an artist, but not in world)
So, in the world of residuum, if you sequence their dna, they are completely different. But thats not even getting into the bag of worms that is the mechanics of Mutant DNA.
Now for why the hidden city is helping... Look at me in the eye. Look at me in the eye and tell me a government wouldn't want to get their hands in that sweet, sweet biological weapon pie. Anyway.
If you really pay attention to the yokai presence on the surface in the show you'll notice that... every single yokai on the surface, with exactly two exceptions, has a connection with crime. The ones that don't, are usually hiding from something. With that... It's pretty obvious to me that yokai on the surface would generally be considered criminals by those in the hidden city.
Why would the hidden city care about what happens to some random criminal?
Another thing is that if a yokai is on the surface, they're typically cloaked, so not really at risk of being captured. Draxum is literally just hanging out, tormenting teenagers in a lunchroom. His whole situation just... out there. It was a given that they were going to mistake him for a mutant.
(of course this isn't mentioning the fact that the hidden city police are opportunistic at best, and apathetic at worst. With how big mama is just able to do basically whatever she wants, the hidden city government doesn't actually seem to care that much about their crime problem. They only really started condemning Draxum once he got their presence exposed to the public. Like really? Just one agent on the guy making biological super weapons? Okay.)
(also, also. in residuim the hidden city is considered a sovereign state, thus yokai have documentation and rights and political power. It's mystics guys. They would have so much political power, oh my god. its just more convenient for them to stay hidden really.)
also, racism is a thing. Yokai aren't like.. immune

The Inner Circle Crushing on Someone from a Different Background -- Part One
this request comes from anon, who asks: 'Head canons for the main dragon age squard (if you feel up to it of course!!!!) About them crushing on someone from a different background (example: cullen and someone rich)'
I ended up splitting this up because I got carried away... my bad. If you want any of these to be revisited or you want me to go into more detail, feel free to shoot me another ask! The same can be said you want DA characters from different games. I ended up omitting the portion of the post with Solas, Varric, and Vivienne for various reasons, but if anyone wants to see those: please send me an ask and i'll try my best to get to it.
Part One (Blackwall, Cassandra, Cole) Part Two (Cullen, Dorian, The Iron Bull) Part Three (Josephine, Leliana, Sera)
Tumblr media
BLACKWALL:
Blackwall is a good example of “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Or that’s what he thinks at least. Despite his efforts to join in on the group atmosphere in the Inner Circle of Inquisition, I think he sticks to what he knows best: being on his own.
In the instance of meeting his opposite, I don’t think it’s necessarily someone from a different social or economic standing (although that could be true as well). In this case, Blackwall meets someone who is the embodiment of community. Someone who truly believes that being around like-minded individuals brings out the best in everyone–someone who believes in second chances and inclusion. Said someone would also be less militant than Blackwall, likely having grown up in a community or place that didn’t require them to be fighting at every chance.
When Blackwall begins to catch feelings, he thinks it’s a pipe dream. To him, it’s unreasonable that someone like him–a liar, stuck in self-imposed exile–would be deserving of someone so open minded and forgiving. He shoves every thought he has away, resorting to isolating himself more. He doesn’t want to ruin anything else.
His crush, being someone that believes in inclusion, would refuse to leave Blackwall out (even not knowing the circumstances of his isolation). They would pull him right back into the fray of the Inner Circle and whatever shenanigans they get into in between quests. Their insistence on including Blackwall makes him believe that he really might have a chance after all.
CASSANDRA:
Cassandra has an interesting relationship with her social status. She’s technically in line for the Nevarran throne, but she wanted nothing to do with the nobility. She gave up that claim and gave herself to the Seekers of Truth–but even there she couldn’t remain unremarkable. Cassandra is so good at most everything she does, so she finds standing at the right hand of Divine Justinia.
Cassandra would likely find interest in someone who came from a different station than she did: humble beginnings and no titles. She finds it refreshing. There’s no nonsensical rituals that need to be done every time they speak, and the lack of formality makes her feel like she’s being treated like a real person. For her to even develop feelings in the first place, the object of her affection would need to be able to stand on their own–she likes someone who doesn’t hide behind orders, organizations, and titles.
When Cassandra meets anyone at all, she doesn’t dare bring up her family name. This is especially the case with someone who catches her interest–and especially if they have nothing to do with the nobility at all. Cassandra wants to be perceived for herself and her skills, rather than the family that has come before her. Not to mention, getting Cassandra to talk about her family history takes a considerable amount of trust.
It takes months of traveling together for Cassandra to begin to let her walls down. When she sees that this person she might have feelings for can be their own person, fights for what they believe in, and stands up against the unjust, she starts to let her own walls down. Sharing her past, her family and her titles is the next step for her–it’s probably the best sign of trust you could get from her. That trust is enough for her to see her crush in a serious light–that this is someone who understands her for who she is, rather than where she came from.
COLE:
Cole’s origins are so different from the rest of the Inner Circle, having been the amalgamation of a spirit and a human boy. He doesn’t really remember the life that preceded him joining the Inquisition, and his days are shaped by the people that he’s helped rather than the things that happened. Everything about him is rough around the edges since he was never taught much of anything.
When Cole meets his crush, many of the Inner Circle think it’s a disaster waiting to happen–of course he decided to fall for someone with a very prestigious upbringing. They have a noble background and were always taught to be on their best behavior. Even around their friends, they’re formal and use proper titles. It takes a while for it to begin to wear off (only after Varric has insisted that it’s okay that they use first names).
Cole is immediately attracted to them. He doesn’t entirely understand the formalities, but the way that they speak to him on the same level as they do everyone else makes him feel special. That’s how it begins; He enjoys being treated with respect. They’ll even call him “Ser Cole” even though he doesn’t have a real title. And to them, Cole’s interest in everything is adorable. It’s so different from all the possible matches in the nobility. They often turn their noses up at everything, but Cole seems to find joy in even the smallest things.
The relationship begins smoothly. Most of the Inner Circle thinks it’s sweet, so there’s little objection. It’s likely the family of Cole’s love that objects. When they meet, Cole is immediately overwhelmed–all the unspoken rules that are going over his head, and the copious feelings he’s hearing all at once. The evening is a disaster, likely culminating in a family member saying something heinous to Cole. After that Cole begins to think that maybe he’s not worthy of loving someone like them, that it’d be easier to give it up just so he’d never have to do that again. Yet, his love finds meaning in the smaller things, and they’re willing to give up everything they grew up with if it means getting to stay with Cole.

The Colour of Fire
"This must be tough on your lot, huh?"
"What do you mean," Palira asked, already knowing where this conversation was headed. Her tail coiled instinctively beneath the desk.
"Oh, come on, you know what I mean." The customer was human, as they so often were. He counted out his coins on the counter, as if she wouldn't have to tally them herself. "I don't know what the right word is nowadays. Is dragon still allowed? We're not supposed to say wyrms, right? Or is that wyverns?"
"Dragon is fine." She didn't bother outlining the difference. If he cared, he wouldn't already know. "But I understood the your lot, as you so diplomatically put it. I meant the other part. What must be tough?"
"Look, you know, getting rid of coins and that. The paper money. You people like piling it up, right? Hoarding? What are you going to do - make a stack? Build a mattress out of wads of notes?"
"That's a stereotype." Palira let the you people slide. Some days she was just grateful for people. "The idea that we sleep atop of a mound of gold. It really doesn't work that way."
Her ancestors would have swallowed him whole, but evolution had seen them go the way of the giants, adapted for life in the crowded cities. She'd kept her tail, her wings, her penchant for pyrotechnics, but wore clothes and worked behind a counter; the same number of scales, just scaled down. No less a dragon, but more of what his sort would recognise as a person.
She began the process of counting his coins away, keeping a tally as she went. This change to paper money was welcome, but it involved an awful lot of hassle: all of the old coins would need to be taken out of circulation, with notes issued in exchange. Vast exchanges had been set up to manage the transition, with dozens of trusted workers like Palira having to manually convert between the two. It wasn't too bad, when they let her concentrate.
"Right, that's what I'm asking." The human really wasn't getting the hint. "How does it work, then? You just pile it up to look at it? You don't eat it, do you?"
Palira sighed, a wisp of frustrated smoke escaping from her nose. "Traditionally - and I don't speak for all dragons here, because we're all individuals - we've just been drawn to gold for the way that it gleams. In our culture, it's the colour of fire, which is obviously also sacred to us. It's that lustre we revere above all else. Not how much is can be traded for at the greengrocers."
They'd always loved gold for its appearance - just as his ancestors had, before they'd gone and made it weird. Humanity had declared this simple metal to be the unit of all worth, the symbol of trade, and then also used it as the marker of their greed. A love for gold was seen as toxic, the root of all their sins, whilst loving other things was still allowed. Dragons were painted as the embodiment of miserly evil, when they were aesthetes: they'd only ever cared about the beauty of the gold itself.
Of course, the human translation of gold-as-money had also made it incredibly hard to get hold of the stuff. Even those who didn't care for the colour needed it to eat every day, to invest in new clothes, to save to put a roof over their heads. They started hoarding it, hiding it, packing it away in bank vaults where nobody could admire it at all. For Palira and her lot, the transition to paper money couldn't have come sooner.
No wonder so many had applied to work at exchanges like this: handing out the new notes, and taking the redundant old coins in exchange. Finally, they could show the world how little they cared for money: they would make an arrangement of that gold, yes, now that it was no longer legal tender. They would remove it from circulation all right. It had been freed up to be worshipped, just like in the olden days. Legally worthless, but still worth everything to them.
"Fire's red," the man told her. "Everyone knows that."
"You have a good day," Palira said, handing over his wads for safekeeping. She could easily find out where he lived, if she thought he needed more of a lesson, channelling the fury of her ancestors for the modern age. That was the other good thing about paper money, she thought: it was much more flammable.

A Thing Of Vikings Chapter 38: ...And The Truth
Tumblr media
Chapter 38: …And The Truth
Immediately prior to the conclusion of the Dragon War in AD 1040, Berk's society was structured around four major clans of 110-150 persons—Ingerman, Hofferson, Thorston, and Jorgenson—plus the Chief's clan, Haddock, plus approximately two hundred more clanless members of the Hooligan tribe, grouped in small families or as solitary individuals.  During this time, most of the resources of the village and island were under the control of these five clans, granting them significant social and economic influence.  This state of affairs is generally agreed to be a result of the depredations of the dragon raids, which made it such that only larger clans were truly viable, as they collectively had the resources to withstand the constant losses that would debilitate any smaller clan.
This can be seen in the case of Clan Haddock, which had been reduced from the 108 persons listed as their maximum in AD 875 down to four (Stoick, Valka, Hiccup, and Gothi) in AD 1025.  Stoick was able to maintain control over the rest of the village due to tradition, but also due his charisma, leadership skills, physical prowess and strength—and due to being the sole inheritor of his clan's comparatively vast wealth, which he used judiciously in order to stay in power, creating debts of honor and capital that would need to be repaid by the recipient out of social expectations.  He also made use of Clan Haddock's web of kin ties to the rest of the village; for examples, Stoick's sister, Serena, had married into the Jorgensons at about the same time Stoick had married Valka clan Jorgenson, and Stoick's paternal aunt Rhonda was the wife of Rikard clanhead Hofferson and thus the matriarch of a third of the Hofferson clan.
Despite all of Stoick's efforts and skilled politicking, however, his clan was simply not as vibrant and able to absorb damage as the other clans.  Stoick's assets were mostly static compared with the others, despite the loans that he constantly engaged in for investment, and only his skills—in politics, and in dragonslaying—allowed him to defer the inevitable collapse of his clan, according to the Gobber Ledgers.  This persisted until his son came up with a completely different solution to their problem, revived their clan, and changed the course of history.
Without Hiccup's efforts, however, Clan Haddock would almost certainly have joined the other nine extinct clans listed in the Hooligan records at the end of Stoick's life.  Instead, by AD 1050, the social structure had shifted—occasionally catastrophically—to medium-sized clans, ranging in size between 30 and 70 people.  Clan Jorgenson was the first to split, in response to the death of…

@edgier-than-a-diamond thank you so much for the character thoughts prompt :D
Tumblr media
1. What my Arisen thinks of them -
Reverie is almost a bit hypnotized whenever Wilhelmina's got her in her sights; she's astoundingly beautiful, entrancingly so, but there's also a lowkey sense of danger that Rev realizes she should be careful about but... mostly just adds to that mysterious appeal. She's very curious about her, because there seems to be more to her that meets the eye from the first time they meet, considering she was immediately willing to help get her out of a tricky predicament. There are ways in which Reverie is very perceptive, and others where her lost memories create a fault point in actually putting the pieces together. Nonetheless, even when they've established more of a bond of comradery and trust, she gets the sense that Wilhelmina is holding back - even when she's openly flirting.
2. What my Pawn thinks of them -
I feel like I have to first say: Rann isn't stupid. Quite the opposite. He's just not always quick to leap to what might be extremely obvious in instances of flirtation and physical intimacy. So while he knows the kind of work that goes on in the Rose Chateau, he doesn't have a strong personal opinion on it, hasn't really considered it. So for Wilhelmina, at first he simply thinks of her as any other individual they've crossed paths with, strong-willed, clever, and charismatic. There's a bit of caution: after all she seems to have secrets, and he's wary of anyone who might try to manipulate the Arisen to their own ends, but ultimately in the course of aiding the Reverie, proves herself to be an ally worthy of trust and respect. It's only a bit later that he realizes Wilhelmina is flirting with Reverie when he thinks any deeper about it...
3. What they think of my Arisen -
She isn't sure what to think of Reverie initially. She seems the kind sort, and a little soft, a little naive - but someone who was only kind, and soft, and naive, wouldn't be sneaking around the palace with that sharp, determined look in her eyes. Reverie is a slew of contradictions, and she suspects at times it's her loss of memory that lends to that. But those contradictions certainly make her interesting, and in the end she can't deny she's rather fond of their Arisen. Maybe... a little more than she would prefer. But she is very perceptive of the 'vibe' between Reverie and Rann; most of her play-flirting with Reverie ends up being deliberately in front of Rann to see that brow of his furrow.
Rann:
Tumblr media
4. What they think of my Pawn -
Such a curiosity. At first she didn't think overmuch about him, though I do like to think she has slightly more sympathy for Pawns than perhaps your average Vermundian. Still, while she doesn't have much personal interaction with most Pawns, she could easily see there was something... different, about Rann. Possibly even before he actually really began showing any distinct growth. (I think she's just that good at reading people.) She has enough of her own problems to take care of without playing matchmaker, but whensoever she's around them she loves to prod at Reverie to see that above-mentioned confusion on his face. She knows there's a heart in there that's getting twisted up, he just hasn't figured it out yet, so she playfully believes she's doing him a favor helping him do just that.
Bonus: An extra headcanon I have about them -
Wilhelmina gifted Reverie a beautiful scarlet dress embroidered with golden dragons on the sleeves for wearing to masquerades. Another slightly... "I'm not sure if I really want that but it's on a shelf in my head" headcanon is that Rann goes to her for ~romantic advice~ at some point, which... when Reverie first hears "Rann went to the Rose Chateau" has her soul leaving her body.

Although, wouldn't it be super interesting if Rayla is forced to choose between Callum and the world? She either hesitates again (and saves Callum) or stops someone who is a danger to life and love itself (like Runaan would have).
I mean, I think that's exactly what it's leading up to. However, I don't think Rayla is going to save Callum through hesitation (and I'm not sure if I think her hesitation will be what allows Callum - under possession - to free Aaravos, but we'll have to see). More details on various scenarios Callum could free Aaravos under / Rayla's response(s) here
Rayla's trolley problem - one life over potentially many - has been her most continual character conflict over the course of the series ("You let him live but you killed us all" in 1x01; "if I don't come back, you and Ezran can get Zym to Xadia" in 2x07; "You all die or just the wretched evil human dies" in 3x01; "You and Ezran should take Zym, but I can't leave [...] I have to stay and defend the dragon queen" in 3x09; saving Zym over her own life in 3x09), with Rayla always saving/sparing the life of the individual even when that would mean losing/risking her life and turning against her family/loved ones. Save one important exception - leaving the drake behind in 4x05 with "We can't save everyone, Soren. There's too much at stake." (More on TDP's continual trolley problem as a conflict here.)
This is because to Rayla, a single life is worth defending, saving, and sparing. She failed as an assassin because she's overly compassionate; what she labels hesitance, the show itself labels as mercy, doubly pointed out by Ezran: "You saw he was afraid. And you knew he was a person, just like you." And Rayla still - still - likely considers that a mistake & a moment of inevitable weakness: "It was my fault we were discovered" (3x03) / "I failed them, I let them all down. They're right to reject me" (3x04) / "The face glowering back at her wasn't an assassin, and it never would be" (Chasing Shadows) / "Oh no, I messed up again!" (4x06).
Losing Callum has also been a consistent fear of hers since 2x02 and has just continually grown since then: "I'm afraid of hurting him" / "I can't lose you like this, you mean too much to me!" / "I risked losing the best thing I ever had: you" / "You think I meant to hurt Callum? That was the last thing I wanted!"
So I think like anything else, her not killing Callum while he's brainwashed will have a few different levels to it:
Self sacrifice because we know Rayla doesn't care about what happens to her / if he hurts her, she just wants to save him.
At the same time a refusal to sacrifice what she wants/loves most (for once) and thus 'undoing' her choice in TTM in a lot of ways
The aforementioned Runaan parallels, although I feel like the possession scene may borrow more from Bloodmoon Huntress even if Runaan may be pushing her to be more like him from 1x01-1x03, but we'll have to see
Emphasizes her opposition in Aaravos in regards to the role/place she has in Callum's life
If she spares/saves Callum, she's honouring her own decision to spare Marcos tenfold, and realizing it wasn't mistake. That's one of the reasons I lean towards Rayla 1) making an active choice about it in the end (even if she may hesitate at first) and 2) her choice to be merciful ultimately not being what leads to disaster (re: Aaravos' release), but being in Callum's hands instead (especially if she's been injured) in how he responds.

What are your Headcanons for the rfa if they were fairytale characters?
This ask has certainly reawaken my childhood interest in fairytales and mythical creatures! It's always fun to play around with magical au's, so I had a lot of fun pondering over each respective character, and what role would they play in a fairytale setting. Btw, feel free to shoot me another ask if you were referring to actual characters from various fairytales, 'cause I have ideas on that front as well!
Yoosung
Unicorn. Now, this may seem like a very odd choice for him, but there's actually some reasoning behind it! Unicorns are often depicted as skittish creatures, who are actually very fierce at heart. I can't help but compare them to Yoosung in that regard, as he's often viewed as somebody who's a bit of a scaredy cat when, in reality, he is a person with a heart of gold who will fight tooth and nail for something he knows is right. Kind of like unicorns sometimes serve as protectors of nature and its many creatures in need of care. They are also deeply intertwined with healing properties, which fits right in with our boy Yoosung. Do I imagine him as a star-themed unicorn? Yes. Yes, I do.
Zen
Merfolk. Well, that was an easy pick! What could be more fitting for our darling star of the RFA than these beautiful and mystical creatures of the sea? Merfolk often symbolize individuality and independence, and those traits are very prevalent in Zen's life story. Be it through the tale of Ariel rebelling against her controlling father, or the tales of the sirens (which are different from mermaids but are worth mentioning regardless since they're often intertwined with one another) luring those unlucky enough to disturb their home waters to their demise, merfolk are mysterious and freedom-loving creatures. I can imagine Zen struggling to make a life for himself, as every human he meets falls for his beautiful voice and mesmerizing beauty... But, all he wants is to be seen for his skills and passions. There could be a very intriguing love story to be written about a merman Zen falling for a runaway sailor MC!
Jaehee
Faun. While fauns are creatures who are only depicted as men, we can bend the rules a little! This one's more of a biased choice of mine since I have a soft spot for fauns and their gentle nature. Fauns, similarly to satyrs, are half-human half-goat creatures, but they serve a distinctly different role from the aforementioned satyrs. While fauns are known for their occasional mischief, they are a symbol of harmony and balance between human existence and nature, and serve as protectors of the countryside and shepherds. There's something very sweet about imagining Jaehee as a reserved loyal faun slowly learning to accept that gentle loving part of herself and finding her own little community. I want her to create many delicious foods for the village she chooses to make her home and keep everyone's livelihoods safe and happy. (With occasional mischief of course!)
Jumin
Wizard. More specifically, dark magic wizard. It is simply way too fitting for his canonical fascination with the occult for me to overlook! Though, despite his affinity with dark magic, Jumin would use his powers strictly for necessary and good use. I could also see him being one of the most powerful mages in all the land, which is why he's also responsible for keeping the peace between every individual magic user. Could you imagine the damage a powerful witch or wizard could do if there were no regulations put in place? I see him also studying alchemy and potion-making in his free time. He is a responsible and wise wizard who's very in tune with his magic, but his status and power also keep him alienated from the rest of the world. Maybe a certain curious MC could help him with that? And yes, Elizabeth is his familiar.
Saeyoung
Dragon. This is another biased choice of mine because I just know for a fact Saeyoung is a huge nerd for dragons and has a dragon OC he loves with all his heart. To be fair, in some folktales, dragons do play the role of fierce protectors, loyal to those they hold dear and vicious to those who dare lay a hand on their treasure, be it in the form of literal gold or people they swore to defend. Either way, dragons are a force to be reckoned with, and it does describe our lovable but unforgiving redheaded on a pretty good level. Can you imagine? Him having to use his strength for horrible things, if only this meant his precious brother would be protected and happy? A lot of story potential for sure. I'd also like to imagine him having glowing dots on the underside of his wings that form various constellations. A reminder of his true gentler nature beneath all the blazing fire.
Jihyun
Phoenix. What could be more fitting for Jihyun's self-destructive devotion than a creature that literally sets itself on fire, only to be reborn again to repeat that very same cycle again? Not to mention the fact that fire brings a ton of very painful memories for him? He probably sees only the destruction his fire brings, overlooking the true beauty of it. Jihyun spends a lifetime neglecting himself and burning brightly for other people in his life instead of valuing his own tender heart. And, in the end, that's the exact reason why his fire hurt so many, despite his good intentions. But, phoenix's story is not one of loss and despair, it's a story of hope and renewal. I'm sure Jihyun will find his true strength eventually, and once he does, he will come out of the ashes shining brighter than ever before. Not for anyone else's gain but his own.
Rika
Faye. I quite like the idea of Rika being a faye with genuinely good intentions who was met with nothing but fear and loathing just because of who she is. See, fayes are known for their malice and the danger they entail for humans, especially children. It would certainly be hard to convince a bunch of paranoid and scared folks that you mean no harm. And, paradoxically, that's exactly what pushes Rika to eventually become the very same malicious and cruel faye everyone in her village claimed her to be. She abducts those she views as outcasts and brings them to her kingdom - a place where everyone can live in peace and harmony without fearing rejection or hatred. While faye can't lie... However, Rika is known for her extraordinary charisma and her elegant way with words. She can convince anyone to come to her side with one wave of her hand and just a tiny sprinkle of magic.

Day 4 – Buddies
Zet – Cry is Zet’s trusty partner since forever and oh boy has this poor cat been through a lot. Cry is a bit of a stickler for the rules and tries to keep situations under control, which is hard when his huntress keeps running headfirst into danger and (accidentally) insulting authority. Still, despite all the migraines he’d gladly lay his life down for his huntress. Way later, on a long journey from the mainland back to the New World, Zet stumbles onto Kamura and meets the veteran Palamute Rev. He’s a jaded old dog whose hunter had died long ago and despite all his skills had refused to be taken in by anyone. Somehow, he and Zet resonated, and despite his better judgment, Rev joined Zet and Cry for their adventure.
Mei – I’d say her buddy is Navirou, I guess? While they do butt heads sometimes, cos Navirou is very overdramatic and Mei just wants to avoid conflict, she really grew close to the weird Felyne. He can be kind of narcissistic, but Mei knows he cares a lot about her and even through danger, he never left her side. He’s also one of the only few individuals that didn’t have expectations of her since Navirou didn’t know her grandfather, so Mei found she’d often cling to Navirou’s point of view.
Chidori – Nyaba and Shibe have been with her since she was a kid, but she hadn’t seen the two for years when she was training at the Guild. But ever since she’s returned to Kamura, the two haven’t left her side. Nyaba is a very calculating Felyne and often gets called a Melynx cos she likes being a trickster. Best support you could ask for though. Shibe is a very chill Palamute since he is a very different breed from most of the dogs Iori takes care of. Not to say he’s useless in a fight. Day 5 – Monsters
Zet – Zet doesn’t really have a favourite monster, but she does prefer those that go “head first, thoughts later” as these monsters are very predictable and comparably easy to deal with. As for association, Zet would love to not have a link to this monster, but she sadly has strong ties to Fatalis. She had to face this monster before and almost lost her life in the fight, it was a miracle she managed to survive. After her recovery she had been sent to the New World as the Guild found her too useless (and too dangerous) to keep around, but in the end, she was forced to face the beast once again, but this time hopefully for good. I’d be amiss not to mention Xeno’jiva though, cos, ya know, Sapphire Star and all. I do personally link it and Zet together, even more so if we go with the route that Safi’jiva is the same dragon. I do love a good rivalry between hunter and monster. Also, also, if Zet had a monster-sona, it would be Velkhana.
Mei – Oh, Mei has a fondness for all monsters, really. She loves all her monsties equally, but some of her children just need/want more attention so these are kinda extra special. Of course, you have her lil baby boy Ratha, the monster fate tied to her, and Mei would not give him away for anything. Then she got her problem child Asparagus, a young and overactive Astalos. He’s like a bug dragon puppy that’s just teething, so he gnaws on everything and anyone, but Mei just finds it so adorable she would let him chew on her arm forever. Last but not least are her calm, broody ones, Apple the Anjanath and Legume the Legiana. These two are rather mild mannered but both very cuddly and affectionate. Since they’re the level-headed ones, they, along with Ratha, usually keep the rowdy bunch in check.
Chidori – As Mei is sunshine incarnate, so is Chidori Gargwa incarnate. I took a lot of inspiration from Gargwas when designing her, and her nervous and flighty demeanour also really reminded me of them. As for favourite, she likes the more chill and non-threatening monsters, at least the ones that don’t look threatening. Monsters like Tetranadon, Pukei-Pukei and strangely even Espinas (when it is asleep).

I really want to know more about your headcanons about magic and the supernatural aspects of hws if I can bother you for them! (draw-a-circle-thats-the-compass)
I tend to treat the nations as a sort of go-between for humans and mythical creatures.
Nations, as a concept, are made up by humans. At the end of the day the land is just land. Linguistic and cultural communities are fluid and move around and exchange information naturally without a need for borders and nationality. A country has no more tangibility in the real world than a mermaid or a dragon. The difference is that unlike mermaids, who are usually relegated to children's books, humans have a habit of trying to enforce nationality through structure - they write laws that they enforce with police and militaries, they draw lines on maps, and distribute resources and violence based on who they've arbitrarily decided is or isn't a citizen.
So in Hetalia, in a world where fairies are real, and every country has its own representation, the nations have been forced into a sort of liminal space between the tangible and the mystical. And where each individual nation falls in that space differs.
While all nations are somewhat supernatural, some nations, the ones we see use magic and interact with mythical creatures in canon, have leaned into that mysticism to the point that they take on aspects of their culture's mythology. Vlad has little vampire fangs because he is a vampire. Arthur's love for the sea and sailing is a result of the fact that he and his brother are all part selkie. Of course, Emil would never acknowledge publicly that he can see magical creatures, he's a huldufólk, it only makes sense to hide his more mythic qualities.
Other nations have adjusted over the years to be a little more human in nature. Even Jack's more supernatural abilities are mostly just a case study in why immortals shouldn't be left alone on an island full of poisonous animals, and if the good neighbors show up on occasion that's really none of his business. Feliciano loves Roman mythology because it reminds him of his grandpa, but at the end of the day, he's a good catholic boy who happens to run at inhuman speeds.
Some nations *cough* Alfred *cough* are in some pretty serious denial about just how supernatural they really are, and if they're just a little too strong even by nation standards, or if the corn in a field parts for them to walk by it, then thats just gods gift to them and there's no reason to question that at all is there?
I also think mythical creatures existing canonically in Hetalia is really interesting because presumably, they all live longer than humans. Even the nations that fall on the more human side of things probably have some sort of relationship with their culture's mythological creatures (except for Alfred who is far too rational to acknowledge the things he can see with his own damn eyes) because those creatures will have a life span much more similar to their own. Building relationships with the supernatural hurts less, there is less of a deadline involved, and a friendship with a supernatural being is something a nation might actually be able to rely on long-term even when they don't have other countries around to support them.

Let’s Talk About Fairy Tail!
Before you start reading this just know that this does contain spoilers up to the end of the show. Also. YES. I will go on for hours about this show if you let me.
Recently I finished my third? fourth? rewatch of the Fairy Tail anime and was once again reminded how much I love it. Now I’m not one who likes to rank my favorite shows or have “Top 5’s” and the like, but Fairy Tail would definitely be at the top of mine if I did. It has definitely become one of my top comfort shows.
I started watching anime sometime around 2018, so I haven’t been in the anime community for long, nor was I around when Fairy Tail started and when all of the opinions on the series were being voiced. Not long after I got into Fairy Tail, I learned that there was a lot of hate around it that I never really understood. Is it perfect? No, it definitely has its flaws. But many fan favorites aren’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think what most people don’t understand, and need to, is that everybody consumes different media for different reasons. What I might be looking for in a show is not the same as what you are looking for in a show. One of the biggest tropes that Fairy Tail has and plays into is “found family”. This is the main reason that I keep coming back to watch this series. For individuals like me, who have always struggled to fit in and connect with their family, this is huge! This series makes you feel like a part of the guild, and like you are part of their created family. The guild accepts and embraces all of the differences and personalities of its members, something that people like me wished our families could do. They will do whatever they can to help each other. It is mentioned all the time how the guild is like a family, with Makarov always referring to its members as his “children”. I have never wished to crawl into my screen and be part of a fictional world more than this one.
Fairy Tail is a series that is bright, colorful, and full of hope and joy. It also is full of action and adventure. I’ve seen the argument that one of its problems is that nobody ever dies and there is too much “power of friendship”, but is that really such a bad thing? Sometimes we need the lightheartedness and comfort knowing that our favorite characters are going to be ok, and make it out alive. To put it into fanfic terms: sometimes we need a little more fluff, and less angst. There are plenty of other series that specialize in tackling more serious topics and dramatics. If I wanted to watch a bunch of people get killed, I’d go watch Attack on Titan. I’m certainly not watching that for its wholesome vibes. Reality already has so much intensity and drama. If I’m trying to escape from it for a bit, am I really escaping if the media I’m consuming is also full of it?
When it comes to pulling at your heartstrings, Fairy Tail actually does a pretty good job at that without anybody dying. For starters, the Tartaros arc as a whole is emotional. Between fanfics and edits that I had seen prior, I was aware of Aquarius’s key getting broken and her leaving before I even watched that episode. However when I did watch it, even knowing it was going to happen, it tore me up. I cried so hard. Don’t even get me started on the dragons at the end of the arc. Another emotional moment for me was during the Tenrou arc when Cana told Gildarts that she was his daughter. That moment made me tear up, but with happy tears. It’s especially endearing to see how they changed and adapted to that new relationship over the course of the rest of the series, especially Gildarts.
Tumblr media
Speaking of character development, Fairy Tail actually does this well for some of the characters. Let’s start with Lucy. Yes. Lucy Heartfilia (I will not tolerate any Lucy hate)  has some great development. At the start of the series, she is shown to be scared and hesitant during missions and fights, and relying on the others to take care of business. Gradually she becomes stronger, both with her magic and mentality. Her growth feels like a natural and realistic progression. Come the end of the series Lucy has unlocked new and powerful sides to her magic, and fights alongside the others. Honestly, considering her background as a socialite, her development is even more impressive. I could write a whole ass essay about her character if I’m honest. It’s tempting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok. Here’s my hot take: I don’t think that the fanservice in Fairy Tail is as bad as people make it out to be. Yes it is there, I'm not trying to say that it isn't, but for me, I don’t think it ever really took away from the story. Off the top of my head, there is mainly one instance that sticks out to me where I felt that it was excessive and unnecessary, and that was during the Grand Magic Games arc during Mirajane and Jenny’s battle. I also want to point out that it is the same characters who have the most fanservice that are deemed the strongest, while being simultaneously feared and looked up to for that strength. The fanservice is not their only character defining trait. I think if it were, then it would be a problem.
Tumblr media
Some time after I started writing this (which I have been doing on and off for awhile now) I came across this video on TikTok that talked about one of Fairy Tail’s best factors is its enjoyability, and I loved that simplistic explanation of the series.
I have so many more thoughts about this series, but I’ll stop here. My other thoughts might eventually get their own posts. Especially if I feel like spending time focusing on specific characters or moments (that Lucy character analysis is itching for me to write it). On that note, I am always down to scream about Fairy Tail if you are!

I love your fusions! Do you enjoy writing about how the original charas combined personalities cohabitate the same body? Is it like a hivemind in there or do they simply form one person? Or a little bit of both?
aw thank you sm! it can be both difficult and interesting to try and combine character's personalities, it is enjoyable :)
honestly fusion is kinda hard to explain, i portray it a lot like Steven Universe does, just without the concept that only magic gem aliens can do it (is there any other show that has a concept like fusion? i hear about dragon ball z but i've never watched that)
in a fusion, characters have to be in sync and agreeing with eachother. so some fusions– especially "mega hell teenager" who would never know what to say– would be super unstable and prone to defusing. think of all those conflicting personalities trying to work together!
unstable fusions tend to act more like multiple people in one body: they change personalities, are slow to make decisions, sometimes even fight with themself, etc.
but more stable fusions– like between friends, family, and lovers– are more like one new individual with the shared traits of all components. especially if they fuse often and/or for long periods of time!
the rest of this doesn't really answer your question lol, I just think it's a good place to lore dump–
fusion and de-fusion can be both on purpose or accidental! sometimes fusing requires a lot of a effort and focus, like doing a special dance, but sometimes you just need a loving hug or kiss. depends on the stability and all. comically, it can also happen when characters collide with eachother at high speeds!
if you destroy or badly injure a fusion, they will defuse. the component characters will luckily be unharmed, though whatever pain or exhaustion they experienced while fused might linger depending on the severity. the fusion will be fine if it appears again.
fusions have the knowledge and memories of their components, but that doesn't give one component access to the memories of another component. fusion is not inherently indicative of a super deep connection, or a romantic thing, and absolutely not an NSFW thing.
of course, the appearance of a fusion is a combination of the character's designs. the details are very subjective, there is no one way to design a fusion :) a fusion fusing with another character, or a fusion of two or more fusions, is not any different than if each character fused individually.
fusions often have extra body parts, mostly extra pairs of arms, especially if it's more than two components. a high amount of limbs is more common in unstable fusions. they can have the amount of eyes or arms as all the components added together, or they can have fewer. if it's not one of the component's traits, i wouldn't recommend multiple legs, but again it's up to you
fusions are always bigger than their components, and their sizes add up to be quite a lot! Rupaul is tall enough to pet a giraffe, while "mega hell teenager" (i love that name honestly) could lift a school bus!
fusions can inherit and combine the special abilities of the components, although it can get 'lost in translation'. for instance, fusions with Penny and one another character can shapeshift without much trouble, while Rupaul has some difficulties. "mega hell teenager" luckily can't fly despite having Carrie as a component!
fusions of two or more different genders are pretty much non-gender-conforming. according to canon, Rupaul is 2/3 male and 1/3 female, but they're essentially androgynous and can lean either way if they want to. likewise, they go by any pronouns.
okay, that's all of the information i can think of, but more questions are welcome :)

what makes xiaoven possible from ventis pov in canonverse? what are some reasons why he would get along w xiao, esp to the point of love?
i see this a lot, actually. a lot of people who aren't xv shippers don't see how they would like each other, and i especially saw for a while at the start people saying venti would never love xiao for "freedom" reasons or whatever. but if someone really thinks venti wouldn't get along with xiao or vice versa, i know they don't actually look at the characters beyond surface interpretation and fanon characterization.
because xiao is exactly the type of person venti is drawn to. before or beyond romance. i mean, look at vennessa--she is, in my mind, very similar to xiao: someone who is trapped and wishes for freedom, someone who is forced to fight when that's not who they want to be, someone who becomes one of the only things between their nation and those who want to destroy it. they're both kind-hearted, deep down, gentle souls who have been given a role in life that pains them (and even after life, in regards to vennessa and celestia). they both fight for the freedom of their people, because they know it's the only thing they can do. and, though we don't know much about the nameless bard, we can assume he was similar to them as well. out of everyone in mond, the nameless bard and vennessa were the ones venti was drawn to. out of everyone in liyue, xiao is the only one we know of who has the power of anemo and has been saved/freed by venti in the same way vennessa was: given just enough to fight for themselves. if venti had not played for xiao that night, he would have been lost to the karma and as far as we're aware, he hasn't been that close to losing it ever since.
venti is very intelligent. he's very compassionate. he's very supportive and understanding. and he's very much drawn to people like xiao. xiao is different from vennessa in that he's had a lot longer to build his walls and be stuck in his rut. so the way venti approaches him is likely a much more delicate dance than what he did with vennessa or the nameless bard. it would take a lot more time. and, despite what most people think, venti doesn't actually bail out when the going gets tough. we see that 100% in how he was with us to face dvalin and how he took down durin with dvalin during the cataclysm--leading durin away from the city and to the mountain, both to protect his people from the dragon itself and the dragon's corrupted corpse.
i think he'd 100% be persistent in wiggling through xiao's walls to at least become his friend, even if just because he thinks xiao needs one. most people seem to think he'd get bored with xiao and how difficult he can be and just move on, but i think he's not so easily fooled. he knows there's more underneath who xiao seems to be on the surface. and he would, of course, slowly reveal the traits xiao has that make him so loveable: his gentleness, his kindness, his loyalty and devotion, his sense of responsibility, his care for liyue and its people, his selflessness, his strength (physically and emotionally), and, most importantly, his deep, deep, deep desire for freedom and peace. i think venti, of all people, would be the one who could see all of this despite the front xiao puts up.
and...how could he not fall in love?
because beyond who xiao is individually, he might also be one of the only people who could understand venti and his very specific grief. there are very few people still alive who went through the archon war, very few people who have lost in the way they have, who have had to live on in the way they have¹. that kind of shared past and pain can create a very strong bond and may be the catalyst for venti feeling like he doesn't have to put on an act around xiao--in fact, xiao is so blunt that it may draw venti away from that mask without him meaning to. and, especially after the Situation with signora, xiao might be one of the only people he can feel safe with.
he doesn't have to put on an act around xiao, he doesn't have to pretend he's not in pain, he doesn't have to worry about being hurt by someone else. he can literally just sit there and play and not say a single word but still be in the company of someone who understands him and i think that's something he very much needs sometimes.
yes, there would definitely be a period of time in which xiao sees him as Lord Barbatos but with a few pranks, antics, and general mischief, that image would be shattered and he would just be venti, which would make being around xiao much more comfortable for him
and i think all of this combined makes the perfect recipe for centuries of extremely intense longing, yearning, pining, etc.
you might ask: "okay, sure, but why xiao? i mean zhongli is right there and he fits a bunch of that criteria!" and i would say: "well, hypothetical anon, as it is, venti and zhongli just can't fucking stand being in each other's presence for more than an hour at most. they are both too much like their elements: free and reckless and flighty as the wind and rigid and stubborn and grand as stone. there's a reason anemo and geo don't react with each other: they just butt up against each other because one is an unstoppable force and the other is an immovable object and they don't get anywhere with each other. i doubt any form of valuable communication can happen between the two of them, and i doubt they could actually like being around each other and genuinely enjoy the other's company beyond just generally annoying each other."
and after all this, i just have to say: i actually wrote a fic all about it, believe it or not. i have an almost 200k word fic about how i think they feel about each other in canonverse, which includes venti's pov and goes over literally everything i said, just much more poetic and filled with a lot more yearning. idk if u've read it yet anon but highly recommend 👍
